or those of you that don’t know, I have recently embarked upon a long-distance relationship, and, I have to say, it’s allowed me to spend some quality time with some of the worst people in the world. Budget airline passengers. I am not suggesting that everyone looking for a bargain plane ticket is the spawn of Satan, but I am saying that the proportion of devil humans that travel on Tiger Air seems worryingly high.

Here’s some of the best (worst) examples I have come across.

Fidgeters There is always one person within your vicinity who is simply unable to sit still. Whether its adjusting their chair a million times or floundering around like a freshly caught salmon for that perfect sitting position, this person will spend the next three hours trying (and failing) to get comfortable.

In most other situations, this would be fine, I would say, ‘you do you’ to the restless maniacs of the world. But, this isn’t most other situations, this is a budget airline, which means everyone crammed into the immediate vicinity is also unable to ‘get comfy’ for the next three hours. I’ve made some observations and it seems that, on average, this person takes down 7-8 people with them — a catastrophic loss of comfort.

People who fall asleep in the first 5 minutes I know what you are thinking, ‘you were just ranting about people who can’t sit still, and now you are going to rant about people who can sit still.’ Well, yes. That’s exactly what I am doing. The thing is, falling asleep on a plane is fine if you have the window seat, but if you have the isle or middle seat, maybe think about holding off from the deep slumber for a couple of hours?

Morning flights or late-night flights are understandable, but the amount of people dosing off at midday is insane. The problem with this is that it’s not really essential for you to have a plane nap, but it most definitely is essential for me to urinate after I have my cup of tea. But thanks to you, oh slumberous one, I am trapped in my seat for the next three hours, praying that you will wake up so that I can make my escape.

Anyone who reads this saying ‘just wake them up’ obviously hasn’t felt the searing glare of an interrupted plane napper. God forbid I disturb your sleep with my basic human needs, how very inconsiderate of me to have a bladder, oh slumberous overlord.

One word… feet This is by far the worst offender. You see, I genuinely thought that people taking off the shoes and socks and putting their feet up on tray tables only happened in fake social media posts. Turns out I was extremely wrong. I have personally fallen victim to this atrocity twice. TWICE. Sometimes the flight attendants say something to the devil human, sometimes they don’t. This leaves me alone with my crippling politeness, sitting next to someone who thinks it’s okay to place their bare feet no less than a foot away from a stranger’s face.

Of course, there’s the other major problem with this situation, which is that people use that tray for eating. No one deserves plane food with a side of athlete’s foot. No one.

t has taken five years, 260 weeks, 1,825 days, 2.3 million minutes, the loss of 32 embryos and one heartbreaking miscarriage for Emily Jade, 41, to be pregnant right now with her second child. Most Gold Coasters know her upbeat personality on 102.9 Hot Tomato’s Flan & Emily Jade with Christo breakfast show, however, behind the laughs, smiles and funny remarks, Emily Jade has struggled

with something many women identify with — infertility.

More and more women are putting babies on hold while they focus on their careers, then, when they are happy in their career and ready for a family, they realise many infertility challenges stand in their way. And Emily Jade knows this all too well.

“It’s hard when you know you’re put on the earth to reproduce and then when you can’t, you feel devastated and useless,” she admits.“Some people say it doesn’t matter if you have them or not, but you get to an age

where the pull to become a mother is so strong that nothing else matters other than trying to have a baby.”

And try she did. With endometriosis, her age and an auto-immune condition called Hashimoto's disease working against her, Emily Jade went through three rounds of IVF and 32 embryos. Each failed attempt impacted Emily Jade and she says she “wouldn’t wish it on anyone.”

“It was heartbreaking. Soul destroying really. You go in with so much hope and you have a really good egg selection. You think,‘It’s going to work this time,’” she says.

But Emily Jade would go through transfer after transfer, get her blood tests back and then her hope would come crashing down.

“You find out it’s not successful… then you leave the clinic and go grocery shopping or pick your kid up from school,” she says.

“The first couple of times I would go home and have a good cry, but it got to the point where it was like,‘I can’t keep crying every month, so, okay, let’s go get on with things.’”

Another time Emily Jade got on with things was when she had her heartbreaking miscarriage in December, 2016, at nine weeks pregnant.

“I went in to have the scan and they said there was no heartbeat. I had to host the May 2018

Broadbeach Christmas Carols the next day, so, I put on a nice dress and a smile and hosted the carols knowing the following week I was going to have to go and have a curette,” she says.

“I could have pulled out of my hosting role but, because of the five years previous, it almost felt like another IVF failure — even though it was a real baby this time. I can’t believe I did it now. I was numb for a few weeks to tell you the truth, and in denial.”

The next year, in 2017, she fell pregnant at the same time and had to host the Broadbeach Christmas Carols again. The eerie timing made Emily Jade very nervous the same thing would happen, but, thankfully it didn’t.

She says,“You never quite get over a miscarriage though,” and thinking back to it still brings tears to her eyes.

True to her journey of falling pregnant, her pregnancy has been full of challenges too. Including being diagnosed with an incompetent cervix at 21 weeks following what was expected to be just a routine scan.

“When I found out my cervix was weak and was rushed to hospital, I was terrified. I was petrified I would wake up without my baby,” she says.

But, again, the baby was okay, and Emily 14

Jade was put on 10 weeks of strict bed rest.

She was still at work and her employer, Hot Tomato, did something most workplaces probably wouldn’t do — they accommodated her new situation.

“Hot Tomato could have done anything.

They could have said,‘It’s too hard, start your maternity leave early,’ or found a replacement for me. But there was nothing wrong with my brain and my mouth; I just had to lie flat for the simple reason of gravity,” she says.

Hot Tomato installed at home where she could lie flat and talk for four hours and still earn a wage which she says was,“incredibly accommodating.”

She feels more workplaces should provide opportunities like these so women aren’t so “alienated and isolated when something like this happens”.

“Great women experience the brain drain from having to step out of work, but there’s no reason why a woman can’t have a bit of day-care here and a bit of dad help there and manage their career if workplaces can be accommodating,” she says.

“We’ve got the same degrees, we’ve worked for the same amount of time, we’ve got the same qualifications after all.”

Emily Jade also feels there is a huge amount of expectations on women to not

only fall pregnant, but to return to work once the baby is here.

“There is pressure to be both the caregiver/homemaker as well as a modern woman running businesses, companies and working, and pulling in the same money,” she says.

“It’s almost like when you’re at work, you’re pretending you don’t have children then, when you’re at home, you’re pretending you don’t have a job. There’s a lot of pressure on women to be, and to have, it all.”

Emily Jade’s first child, Millie, took two years of IVF to conceive and, up until 12 months before she came into the world, she had kept her struggle to fall pregnant private.

“In radio, you are paid to share your life.

You share stories in the hope that callers ring in and say, ‘Me too,’” she says.

She was working for Triple M Breakfast at the time and admits it was hard for her

support for women with these issues, and, she had a great support network behind her too including her husband and wonderful friends and family. She found the doctors and nurses were so supportive too as she stayed at the same clinic.

“I’m a marriage celebrant as well and I’m actually marrying the scientist that helped create the baby! We became great friends and she used to play my embryos Hot Tomato’s breakfast show, so they could listen to their mumma,” she says.

Her doctor, Dr Gary Swift, was also of great support to her, encouraging her to stay positive through all the hard times and failures.

“He’s an excellent doctor, he’s so

on the good because I felt I had nothing.

After Millie, I would drive home from a negative blood test and think how lucky I was to be able to pick her up from school and cook her dinner and be her mum,” she says.

“I focused on the fact that I have a beautiful child, she’s perfect in every way, and she’s the love of our lives. If this didn’t work, it didn’t matter, because we’ve got Millie.”

For those struggling with infertility issues, Emily Jade has some advice.

“Try everything, explore every option but also don’t make it your main focus. It’s not a happy ending for everyone and, if it is your sole focus in life, that can be soul destroying,” she says.

“I kept my job and hobbies and focused on the good in my life so that each and every month when it was bad news, I had something else to be grateful for.”

Emily Jade is nearing the end of her pregnancy and, even though it’s far from how it looks in these images, she is looking forward to meeting her baby.

“The whole family is very excited. Obviously, you’ve got your last trimester pregnancy feeling, and it doesn’t matter how excited you are, you feel heavy and slow and tired. I’ve got terrible reflux — it’s not glamorous at all — unlike the photos!” she laughs.

“But there is something magical about growing an actual human in you that makes you want to show off the bump and declare that, right now, what your body is doing is extraordinary. In a few months I’ll be knee deep in baby poo and sleepless nights, and I can’t wait!”

It’s almost like when you’re at work, you’re pretending you don’t have children then, when you’re at home, you’re pretending you don’t have a job. turning up to work every day, trying to share a story from the day before, but her day before was trucking around to doctors, being diagnosed or having procedures.

“I didn’t share that for a while and then one day I decided to, and I saw this massive community of career women essentially that have put babies on hold and now want them but are now finding out they can’t have them,” she says.

“They are fronting up in offices and workplaces everyday with this sad secret.”

Emily Jade was able to be a voice and

knowledgeable and he’s got a great sense of humour. He has lots of time to answer questions and he didn’t want to give up on me,” she says.

“I’d say,‘This is it, I’m not doing it again.’

Could you have endometriosis?

Learn more about ‘The Silent Disease’ that affects around 1 in 10 women

ndometriosis is an often-painful disorder in which tissue that normally lines the inside of your uterus — the endometrium — grows outside of your uterus. It is commonly associated with painful, debilitating periods, yet many women with the disease have no symptoms at all.

The most common places endometriosis occurs are the ovaries, the fallopian tubes, the bowel, the bladder, the pelvic lining layer or peritoneum, or on the outside of the uterus (front, back or sides).

How is endometriosis treated?

If endometriosis is suspected, your GP will refer you to a gynaecologist. Gold Coast Gynaecologist and Fertility Specialist Dr Andrew Cary says a procedure is then undertaken for diagnosis.

“While pelvic pain and painful periods are often tell-tale signs of the disease, a correct and certain diagnosis can only be made from a surgical procedure known as a laparoscopy,” he says.

A laparoscopy is a keyhole procedure that allows a gynaecologist to see the pelvic organs using a telescope, light and camera.

From there, treatment will differ according

to the stage of endometriosis and the patient’s desired outcome.

“Treatment may simply involve removal or excision of sites of endometriosis at the initial laparoscopy,” Dr Cary says.

“Medical therapies to control mild to moderate pains may involve hormonal tablets such as the pill, progesterone, or pain relievers such as anti-inflammatory medication.These are often combined with physical relief such as massage, acupuncture or heat application.”

Endometriosis and infertility Dr Andrew Cary says some women don’t know they have the condition until they try to get pregnant.

“Some women with endometriosis have few or no symptoms, while others have mild to severe pain, or, are having trouble achieving a pregnancy,” he says.

“It’s often not diagnosed until a woman sees a fertility specialist for support to achieve pregnancy after trying naturally for some time.”

Dr Cary says there is a strong link between all stages of endometriosis and infertility.

association. Pain may be so severe and disabling that intercourse proves to be difficult, infrequent or impossible,” Dr Cary says.

“Mild endometriosis will result in a local inflammatory response that may impair ovarian, tubal or uterine function and, therefore, affect fertilisation or embryo implantation.

“Advanced endometriosis distorts the pelvic anatomy resulting in direct physical blockage of egg release, fertilisation, and embryo transport as well as the severe inflammatory issues.”

The great news is that most women with endometriosis can have a family.

“Some women with endometriosis need no treatment at all to achieve a pregnancy. If treatment is needed, it may involve surgery to remove endometrial tissue and, in more severe cases, surgery is generally followed by IVF,” Dr Cary says.

“Most women I diagnose and treat for endometriosis go on to become a mum if that is their goal.”

Endometriosis is believed to affect one in 10 women and can begin from as early as their first menstrual period.

While the exact cause of endometriosis is not known, there are several factors involved including a family history of the disease.

The next step If you suspect you may have endometriosis, see your GP and ask for a referral to a gynaecologist. If you suspect endometriosis and are trying to get pregnant, make sure the gynaecologist is also a fertility specialist.

“As a gynaecologist and fertility specialist, I am acutely aware of the symptoms and will support my patients to choose the best treatment option for their stage of endometriosis and the outcome they hope to achieve,” Dr Cary says.

“My goal is to enable each woman to regain control of her health, quality of life and longterm family goals.”

o make a baby we need a sperm to fertilise an egg and create an embryo which then implants and grows in a uterus. Whether this happens naturally, or with the various inputs of assisted reproductive technologies, the fundamentals are the same. Those of us who specialise in Obstetrics and Reproductive Medicine are constantly facing the limitations of nature and biology imposed by age and disease and sometimes unknown factors.

A limited number of eggs It is a biological fact that women get all the eggs they will ever have a few months before they are born. The ovaries fill with primitive oocytes (eggs) which number about two million on average. These oocytes, whether they are “used” or not, will progressively decline in number and become depleted, with the women eventually experiencing menopause between 40 and 60 years of age (average 51.7 years in Australia).

As oocytes age, the incidence of genetic

mistakes increases, hence the chance of successful pregnancy declines, and the risk of miscarriage and genetic conditions such as Downs Syndrome increase. This translates to reducing success rates with both natural attempts and IVF with normal ageing.

The fertile window Biologically, women are probably at their most fertile between about 16 and 30 years of age. This may not always correspond with the time when they are financially secure or have a partner they want to have babies with. For men, the situation is different. Men produce sperm from puberty and it is a continuous process with the testes “like little factories” producing millions every day. While there is a slow decline in quality and quantity with age, most men could still potentially father children well into their 80s.

The fertility decline A slow decline in female fertility occurs from 30 years of age and gains more momentum from 35 onwards and diminishes rapidly after 40.

Even with current IVF technologies, producing healthy babies for women over 40 is a challenge.

Typical success rates are in the region of 20% per transfer at 40, falling by about 5% every birthday, becoming very rare over 44 years of age unless donor eggs from younger women are used.

Factors that impact fertility In Australia, the average age of women having their first baby is just over 30. The implications of this social trend are multiple. The more birthdays women have before they plan pregnancies, the more chance there is of conditions developing to reduce fertility. Disease such as Endometriosis and Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) each afflict about 10% of women and variably impact fertility and the likelihood of needing IVF. Exposure to Chlamydia and other STDs can affect fertility as well as other conditions such as polyps and fibroids in the uterus which become more prevalent with age and may require surgery.

Risks increase with age Older mums are also at higher risk of complications related to pregnancy. Most medical problems which can afflict pregnant women and add risk to pregnancy do increase with age.

Elevated Blood Pressure, Diabetes, Renal and Endocrine diseases all become more prevalent.

Risks of adverse neonatal outcomes also trend higher in women having babies in their 40s, such that allowing such pregnancies to progress post-term is no longer considered appropriate.

Caesarean and instrumental deliveries also become more frequent in this age group.

There is still hope Despite the “doom and gloom” aspect, modern IVF technologies now allow couples who meet later in life, or chose to have children later in life and struggle to conceive, better chances than ever before. Modern Obstetric care is also better equipped to diagnose, monitor and manage relevant risk factors to optimise outcomes for mothers and babies.

few years ago, comedian Amy Schumer gave a speech at the Ms. Foundation for Women’s Gloria Awards and Gala, an event dedicated to saluting ‘women of vision.’ She talked about her experience of graduating from high school and going to college, losing her confidence along the way and how she eventually finds self-worth. But, during the speech, she shares an incident where she was sober and the man involved was incapacitated from alcohol.

Amy discusses how she lacked attention from all the guys at college apart from one, a “super senior” named Matt. She tells how Matt called her at 8am one day, inviting her to his dorm room. When Amy arrives she immediately recognised that he was incredibly drunk and incoherent. Here is a snippet from her speech: “The door opens. It’s Matt, but not really. He’s there, but not really. His face is kind of distorted, and his eyes seem like he can’t focus on me. He’s actually trying to see me from the side, like a shark.“Hey!” he yells, too loud, and gives me a hug, too hard. He’s f--king wasted.”

So, Amy then tells how she went into his room, wanting to feel desired. She gets into bed with him, and they have some incredibly awkward sexual intercourse. She says he was “falling asleep during the encounter” and that she continued despite him being very out of it.

Yes, he consented in his very incapacitated state but, let’s look at the situation differently. Let’s change the gender roles and see how it sounds…

Melissa calls up Steve for some casual sex at 8am. He goes over and she is out of it; she is slurring her words, stumbling, unable to focus on him, and yet he walks in the door and has sex with her. She falls asleep during it multiple times, but he continues. She invited him over, so, that’s consensual and perfectly fine, right?

All of a sudden, we’re not so comfortable.‘Steve’, in our situation, would be labelled as taking advantage of a girl too drunk to make decisions, perhaps even labelled a ‘rapist’, but Amy is not. Her speech is viewed as a relatable journey to selfworth; a young girl wanting to feel desired. And, the speech is even pinned as inspirational. If a male made a speech and used taking advantage of a drunken girl as part of his journey to find himself, best believe it would not be labelled inspirational at all!

Now, obviously we don’t have every intimate detail of this affair and we recognise that there are two sides to every story but, for just one moment, let’s call a spade a spade. Any person in a state of inebriation so severe that they cannot focus their eyes or stay awake cannot legally give informed consent.

Our laws outline that anyone who is sexually involved with a person who is under the influence of drugs or alcohol is possibly committing sexual assault and rape. And, let’s be clear, that applies to both men and women. It’s black and white, no shades of grey.

As a society, we are appalled when men take advantage of women. But, you know what is equally as bad? Women taking advantage of men. Because it happens. Men can, in fact, be taken advantage of and raped — even if society is less comfortable accepting that.

he kissed a boy, and he didn’t like it. If you’re unfamiliar with this recent incident, during an American Idol audition, 19-year-old hopeful singer Benjamin Glaze revealed he had never been kissed. Singer/ songwriter Katy Perry is a judge on the show and so she calls him over to the judge’s panel to give him a kiss. He says “no” initially out of shock but then goes to kiss her cheek. In the last moment she moves her face and intentionally pecks him on the lips. He falls to the floor, visibly taken aback.

He later revealed he was uncomfortable and that he wanted to save his first kiss for his first relationship. Benjamin says that, should she have asked him if he would kiss her, he would have said no. While Benjamin has let the media know he didn’t view the incident as sexual harassment, he acknowledged that it wasn’t consensual.

Last time we checked, sexual harassment was unwanted or unwelcome sexual behaviour. And, if this was a male judge doing something non-consensual to a female auditionee, everyone would be in uproar, slamming him for his unwanted sexual advances. There may even be a sexual harassment case filed. But because it is a woman, and a famous one at that, we accepted it was okay.

Addressing the double standard o, this begs the question: what do we do? It seems almost indoctrinated in society that we accept women as perpetual victims and men as perpetrators.

When it comes to sexual conduct, men want it unconditionally. They’re lucky to get it, no matter how it comes. But women, they are vulnerable and innocent in their sexual pursuits. We provide them sympathy for their damaged confidence or their misguided actions. We feel sorry for them and relieve them of consequence.

But we shouldn’t.

We throw around the term ‘feminist’ so freely, empowered by its insinuation and power. But, the very definition of feminism is, “The advocacy of women's rights on the ground of the equality of the sexes.”

Pay close attention to the word equality. We fight passionately for equal pay, voting rights, laws and rightly so. We deserve this equality. And men do too.

We should place the same expectations of behaviour on both men and women. That is true equality, is it not?

Let’s teach our daughters to fight passionately for equal rights; to recognise the power in true equality.

By perpetuating this injustice we are only contributing to the division between the genders. We aren’t suggesting that men be given more leniencies for their damaging actions, instead, we implore you to expect the same level of respectful conduct from women.

Lead by example in demonstrating a true and just equality.

At the end of the day, that’s what we’re really fighting for, isn’t it?

And on that note, what about the 12-year-old pre-pubescent boy you turn into when you shave?

Dear men, we couldn’t care less about your ‘trust issues’. If the fact that we may look a little less dewy, sun-kissed and radiant without makeup brings trust issues into question for you, then you’re absolutely right — there is a major issue there.

It is you. You’re the issue. And I suggest therapy immediately.

Dear men, if you think we wear makeup to impress you, you need to check your ego at the door. Firstly, we commit serious time, energy and resources (money, lots and lots of money) into our appearance, not for men, but for staring at ourselves when we strut past store windows. Secondly, if you think we own all the Naked palettes to impress a man who doesn’t know the difference between Busted and Snakebite, you are delirious.

Dear men, this idea that makeup is ‘false advertising’ is absurd. We have never pouted a deep crimson red lip and claimed that it was natural. We don’t deny we’re wearing it. And, quite frankly, anyone who says makeup is ‘false advertising’ needs to be aggressively reminded that women are not products.

So, let me conclude gentlemen, that, like it or not, makeup is here to stay. And frankly, it doesn’t matter if you do like it or not. We don’t care. When you site ‘trust issues’ or ‘false advertising’ in your criticism of women who wear makeup, you are only perpetuating the idea that women shouldn’t feel empowered and confident in their own beauty. And that sir, makes you a loser.

f someone hasn’t called it already we are: eyelash extensions are the new hair extensions (though we — and many other women — still love our hair extensions). But eyelash extensions are all the rage. Thick, long lashes you can flutter about to get out of a speeding fine or to win over the guy you have a crush on at the coffee shop… or is that just what we use them for?

Anyway, having eyelash extensions also saves you time in the morning (no mascara needed), provides a stunning open-eye effect and, for those who don’t have naturally thick or long lashes, they help to make your eyes a stronger feature on your face.

We were eager to try this seriously trending beauty service, so, we headed to Sheridan Jane Lashes and Brows. After discussing the type of looks we preferred, looking at our eye shapes and answering

a quick Q&A, Sheridan determined which eyelashes were best suited. Kirstin was to get a medium-length mixed combination set for a natural but noticeable look and Hayley, true to her nature, got a dramatic and glamorous long-length classic set.

First, our eyelashes were washed and prepped before Sheridan put on magnifying glasses, grabbed her tools, and began the application. On each individual hair follicle she glued the extensions. Each of us took about two hours to get lashed, but the wait was worth it! Here’s what we thought.

The lashes are to be washed once or twice a week with baby shampoo. No oil-based makeup remover can be used on them; micellar water is recommended instead. Also, oil-based mascara is not to be used on them because the oil breaks the glue bonds.

The lashes typically lash 3-4 weeks then it is recommended to get infills to keep the lashes looking fresh and lush!

e’ve all heard of bro code, the set of guidelines or unwritten rules that govern the behaviour of ‘bros’. We’re talking about rules such as ‘bros before hoes’ and ‘a bro never sends a birthday card to another bro’.

Ground-breaking stuff here ladies(rolls eyes).

But, never ones to be outdone by ‘bros’, the Get it girls have come up with our answer to bro code. Introducing, Girl Code…

Thou shall always put sisters before misters.

Always.

Thou shall always like and comment on your girlfriends photos on social media. Even if you have just taken the photo and helped her select the filter, you must comment like you’ve never seen it before. Comments such as, “Wow girl, this is amazing!” will suffice.

Thou shall always provide a tampon to a fellow sister in need. You must, without hesitation, dive into your handbag and frantically rummage until you produce that life-saving item triumphantly like the sword from the stone.

Thou shall never steal another woman’s baby name. This is a serious crime punishable by death… of the friendship, that is.

Thou shall never ditch your friends on a night out. Not for men, booze or in light of an intoxicated argument.

Thou shall always take at least 5-10 photos of your girlfriend. Said photos must be taken from a high angle so as to be more flattering and always in the best lighting.

Thou shall always like and comment on your girlfriends photos on social media.

It is your duty to sell it like it’s ShamWow, girlfriend.

Thou shall always respond quickly and dramatically to an SOS text from a girlfriend on a first date. You must phone said girlfriend immediately with an emergency of epic magnitude. Sobbing, screaming and general hysterics are highly encouraged.

Gold Coaster Lisa Allan has always wanted to be a mother, but, her journey to motherhood has not been an easy one with polycystic ovary syndrome in her way

ver since I was little I’ve always wanted children, but, as I got older, it seemed that dream moved further out of reach. At 17 years old, I still hadn’t gotten my period and had been hospitalised countless times with vomiting and severe stomach pain, so, I was referred to a gynaecologist.

I was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) and my battle began.

My fight really kicked in when I met my partner Daniel, and we knew we wanted to start a family. I came off the pill, however, 6 months later, I still didn’t have my period and still wasn’t pregnant, so, I went to another gynaecologist and received heartbreaking news: I would not be able to have kids naturally. I went home and cried and cried.

Infertility treatment was my only option and after many tests, I started the IUI process — intrauterine insemination. I received follicle-stimulating injections with the aim of helping my body to produce good follicles. It took two attempts to finally work. I was inseminated, and the two-week wait began.

Two-weeks later, I got the phone call I was dreading: I was not pregnant.

I took myself to bed and cried for the rest of the day. Despite the pain, we tried again, but were not successful. I had a one-month break then the following month we tried a third time. After all the injections, ultrasounds, blood tests and peeing on countless sticks, it finally happened – I was pregnant!

I had an amazing pregnancy and a great birth, and my little girl was born in March 2013. We couldn’t have been happier.

In September 2014, we were ready to grow our family by one more and recommenced IUI treatment. Again, the first two attempts failed but the third time was the charm and our second daughter was born in October 2015. But I struggled this time around, finding a second baby a lot more to handle. I felt I wasn’t a good wife or a good mum and I fell into depression.

Determined to turn my mind and body around, I turned to exercise and, bit by bit, I started to feel better.

In March, I found KickKamp. I was so nervous as I had never trained with a bunch of girls before and I was not sure I would like it, but I was so wrong! I couldn’t have met a greater group of women who had the same goals as me and we smashed them together. Their positivity and encouragement was inspiring!

That positivity continued when in May I got my period! And again in June, then July, then August too! With help from my doctor, we tracked my period however, unfortunately, although I was getting a period I had no signs of ovulation. In November, I gave up and booked in to start fertility treatments again in January 2018.

I gave myself December to just enjoy my kids, enjoy parties and my friends. On Christmas Eve I felt funny, a bit off and my boobs were sore.

So, I went out and bought a three pack of pregnancy tests, took them, and two beautiful pink lines showed up instantly!

I started crying and jumping around and called my husband immediately — what an incredibly beautiful Christmas gift! On the 28th of December a doctor confirmed it: I was pregnant! Just when we had lost hope and resigned ourselves to the harrowing journey of IUI, we had made a baby on our own!

I can only attribute this miracle to my lifestyle changes, healthy eating and exercise. Not only did it turn my life around, but, it gave me the precious gift of new life.

We’re not asking why, and the less you say the better, but if you need to digitally "stalk" someone here are the legal and relatively easy ways — just be warned that you may not like what you find et us begin with one very important preface: cyberstalking is a real thing and not something we condone. For the sake of this article, when we say,“stalk” we mean,“research”, and not harassing someone online. That is cyberstalking, and is very much a crime, just like stalking someone in real life is.

With that out of the way, there are many great reasons to “research” someone and never before has it been so important. We meet romantic interests online through various profiles, both social media and dating sites, and it is so very easy for someone to pretend to be someone else entirely.

They could Google “attractive man”, download photos of someone else, and upload these to their online profile. They can add some desirable information about themselves, and then message you; you might find them very attractive and the conversation — and the conning — begins. They could lie about everything or just a few things; most often it’s things like age, height, weight, job, income or relationship status. It is rare that someone is lying about every single aspect of who they are, but not unheard of.

Be mindful, these digital stalking methods will only get you so far; the rest is up to you. Be vigilant, have your wits about you and keep an ear out for any inconsistent stories or weird behaviours.

With that being said, let’s open your digital stalking arsenal.

Google search their name This is the best place to begin because, if you don’t already know by now, we’re going to let you in on a little secret: Google knows everything. It’s simple, and you are sure to get some hits.

Type their name into Google and see what you find. Then have a May 2018

good look in the search results. Next look at the search results under “images” and “news”. Click through on any links that could be your target and scope it out.

Another good trick is to search their phone number, email address or any other identifying details you may already have on them. If you know their hometown, that can pull up some results too. Can you tell we’ve done this before?!

Search their name on social media

By Google searching their name, you should find links to a few of their social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and maybe even LinkedIn. If Google didn’t show anything, search on the social media sites directly using their name and other information you know if you don’t know their surname.

Once you find their social media accounts, look at them in detail; check that what they have told you adds up like their age, occupation, relationship status etc. Closely look at their photos to make sure they are who they say they are! Look at their tagged photos too to see if their friends upload photos of them doing questionable things.

Be mindful that many people do not use their full names on social media for privacy reasons. They may use their middle name in place of their surname. You can also search a phone number on Facebook, and if it matches the phone listed on an account, they will pop up!

Reverse Google search their photo If you only know their first name and have one or two images of them, this is a great option. Often this can be the case when you meet people online, and that gives you even more reason to stalk.

Download or screenshot the images (if screenshotting, crop them so it is only the image, not the rest of their profile showing before uploading to Google as you will get better results). Then type reverse.photos into your browser and upload the image. Click “SHOW MATCHES” and you will find yourself on the images page of Google with the results.

Look at any matches you get and, if you get direct matches of the photos, follow the links to find their source.

This is a particularly great way to find out if you are being catfished or not (side note: if you don’t know what catfishing means, it means someone is talking to you online pretending to be someone who they are not). If no direct hits come up, they may be who they say they are.

This tool is useful to discover more about people, where they put their photos online and anything they are linked to.

Look through their friend’s social media accounts You can do this by going into their tagged images and clicking onto the profile of the person who posted that photo. Have a look at their friend, what kind of content they post and if there are any pictures with the person you are stalking. If it is a close friend, this person could have quite a bit of influence on your person of interest, so, ensure it’s an influence you’re okay with.

Why do our millennials think they Father, husband and all round top have all the bloke Ash Palmero weighs in... answers? here’s that old saying, “You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make it drink.” It seems this is true with our current generation — ‘Millennials’.

As a Baby Boomer, it’s me who is the parent of said millennials… so, where did I go wrong, or did I go wrong at all?

One of the biggest things I have noticed when speaking with millennials is that they think they have all the answers, but why?

Is it because they think they have all the knowledge of the world in the palm of their hand, inside their phone, tablet or computer? Therefore, all the answers are just a Google search away (their version of our Funk and Wagnalls).

There is also a thing called life, which I have to remind my millennials of, in that there are many answers or reasons for things, and sometimes these leave you asking even more questions.

Google doesn’t have all of the answers.

You see, every day, so many young people are connected to their group/world via their social media likes, shares, and posts, via snapchat, Facebook and Instagram, along with the tweets.

When you watch our millennials, they are more connected to the world on their screen than they are to the world they’re walking through. They have their head down, earbuds in and are totally removed from what is around them. Are they in the ‘here and now’, or are they in the ‘here and now somewhere else’, where they feel they belong?

I love seeing how they have the access to everything now, and yet, those things and devices are things our generation created for them. You see, we have passed on the technology to them, it was created by very smart people (baby boomers), and it has been picked up by our millennials. That’s what it was designed for and now the power is in their hands, and what they do with it, where these millennials lead us, well, only time will tell.

What I’m sure of for the most part, from looking at the ones I have produced, their friends and some I have met in the work place, is that the world is going to be a very interesting place to be and I will be able to enjoy it all in my retirement.

Just one more lesson we need to teach the millennials is to look after your parents… waiting we are back at the start… You can lead the horse to water…

WORK LIFE A look into the life of Shae Brain, hairdresser turned Nutritional Therapy Practitioner

eaving school at 15 to become a hairdresser and owning her own hairdressing salon at 19 (five weeks post hand surgery we might add!), Shae Brain has never been one to take a back seat in life. She’s now pursuing her passion for health with her new business, The Nourishing Collective. This fulltime lady boss resides in Helensvale with her husband Hamish and their fur baby José.

HOW I CAME TO OWN MY COMPANY… After years of yo-yo dieting, allergies, sugar and alcohol addiction, menstrual problems, chronic bowel troubles and, some may say, ‘anger management’ issues, I finally broke free of the mainstream health fads and took full responsibility for my health. I threw myself into the world of nutrition, educating myself on what real food is, giving up on extreme diets (pfft low-fat be gone!) and have completely overhauled my life.

In the beginning I was food obsessed, swearing off ‘bad’ food for life I became antisocial, continually harping on about food to anyone who would listen — Hubby still insists it was like I'd run away and joined a cult! There was still something missing… life, friends, social outings, a glass of wine with good company… fun was missing!

THEN MY WHOLE PARADIGM SHIFTED...

I realised it's just as important to nourish my mind and soul as it is my body. Fast forward three years and I’m the healthiest, happiest and most educated I’ve ever been in life. My dream has evolved and I’m excited to put all of this into my business, The Nourishing Collective, and help others with food addictions, weight issues and health problems.

I feel like I’m becoming the woman I always aspired to be, filled with passion and purpose.

WHAT MY WEEK LOOKS LIKE… I run my salon four days a week (dropping to three soon) and I spend two days a week working on The Nourishing Collective. This includes working with clients, building

content, brainstorming new recipes, trialling D.I.Y products, researching and spreading the word about real health. I’m CEO to floor sweeper, and everything in between!

JUGGLING TWO BUSINESSES… My days are busy that’s for sure, but my mum always said if you need anything done, ask a busy person! When you have passion and purpose for what you do, ‘work’ isn’t hard; it’s something that sets your soul on fire, it empowers you, motivates you and inspires you to keep going. I try to make sure dinner is prepped first thing in the morning so no matter how hectic my day gets, I know that at the end of it I will sit down to a nourishing meal with Hamish.

THE MOST REWARDING PART… There is so much that I’m grateful for, that fills me with liberation throughout my work. Many years ago, in a Life Magazine interview, Mother Teresa was asked why she did the work she did, and her response was “Because of the way it makes me feel.” It’s quite a selfish act, a good deed of course, but, the way it makes me feel fills me with sunshine and life. To think that only three short years ago I was in a downward spiral and managed to not only pull myself out of it but maintain it blows my mind. want to spread the truth and rid Plan B: There is no Plan B, this is it! Ithe world of disease.

SOMETHING THAT SURPRISES PEOPLE ABOUT RUNNING TWO BUSINESSES… I’m no superhero, I’m just a girl following my dreams, wanting to be a part of the change we strive to see in today’s world.

HOW I RELAX AFTER WORK… When work is done I grab a kombucha or a broth, put some tunes on, sit outside with hubby and chat. We have dinner together and then lounge outside reading, talking and dreaming. Every night is different but it’s part of the day I always look forward to.

Meet the Aussie ‘Gilmore Girls’, Chrys Phillips and her daughter Mikaela, who are breaking moulds and proving Aussies, and women, can dominate the film industry

ike mother, like daughter, that’s the saying right? And it rings true to Chrys who is the Executive Producer, Writer and Director behind Counter Play and daughter Mikaela. Mikaela is not only her righthand man with all things production and behind the scenes of the show, but she also co-produces the show and stars in the show as the lead character.

How did the two of you get into the entertainment industry?

Was it a case of the daughter following the mother’s steps?

CP: For many years on and off I’ve worked in different areas of entertainment and the arts, however, with limited opportunities, I learnt quickly that I had to create my own path within the industry.

From working in radio, to theatre where I directed, produced and wrote, and writing and publishing several of my novels, I’ve always been working in the industry.

MP: I think in some ways it is… It’s not like my only choice was to follow, I’ve always been able to make my own creative decisions and Mum supported them, however, growing up with a very creative and arty mum and diverse childhood, that contributed a lot and showed me many forms of art to explore, create and enjoy.

What are each of your career highlights?

MP & CP: First Australian women to independently produce a show for Australian TV, and Amazon Prime with no assistance from Australian guilds.

MP: Youngest host ever to be accepted into the world’s largest online network, AfterBuzz TV at age 18, with my celebrity interviews being some of the highest ranked on YouTube.

CP: On set of many TV shows including The Vampire Diaries, Revenge and other TV pilots; toured the States with debut book series which is currently being optioned for film.

We hear you sold everything at a $1 Garage Sale and ventured to LA a few years ago to pursue your dreams with many ups and downs, can you tell us about some of these?

CP: I remember landing in LA for the first time ever in my life and sitting in Jerry’s Deli and thinking ‘What have I done? I don’t know anyone here.’ The pressure of having a young daughter with me was also an extended drive to ensure that I would achieve my

goals in the entertainment industry in America. I did experience the highs and lows of the Hollywood clichés; I got to meet leading actors, be on location of popular TV shows, attend red carpet and entertainment events. However, it’s a tough place and the lows included having a book of mine stolen and experiencing representation that neglected their responsibilities and many opportunities for my career were lost. However, you’ve just got to keep getting up, jumping the hurdles and reaching that fabulous finishing line of success!

What is the relationship between you two like?

MP: What you see is what you get! We’re very close, not your typical mother-daughter relationship, and everyone says we are the Aussie ‘Gilmore Girls’ — and it’s so true! Of course, there are differences between us and those characters, but we joke, banter, laugh, love, fight (yes, occasionally, and it doesn’t last very long!) and are best friends all in all.

Some people couldn’t imagine working alongside their mother! What makes your situation different?

MP: Mum and I have always been close and, for so long, it’s pretty much just been us against the world. We also talk quite openly (in general) which keeps our communication open, which, from a business perspective, is very important and key.

Are there ever trying times between the two?

CP: Growing up with trying times of neglect and adversity myself, I don’t see anything that warrants to say on any level our relationship experiences ‘trying times’. Growing up without parental role models conditioned me to be, unknowingly, a different type of mum.

MP: We do have our moments where we butt heads or have a difference of opinion, but, once we get it all out it’s normally pretty much back to normal! I’ve always respected mum and known what she’s done for me and, I think when you get to a more adult age, that’s when you can fully and really appreciate the relationship on another level.

This month is Mother’s Day so, Chrys, can you tell us the best thing about being mother to Mikaela?

CP: Mikaela has my sense of humour (which means we can mess around and understand each other’s jokes). She has an intuitive respect for who I am and what we achieve together. We have this crazy and unique bond and it’s great knowing that someone loves you unconditionally.

And Mikaela, what’s the best thing about having Chrys as a mother?

MP: She’s the best mum I could ask for; she’s always there for me and not many people can say they have such a great relationship with their mum, like I do.

There are many things you can do to keep your peepers healthy, simply start with these three easy steps during Macular Degeneration Awareness Month FOOD Did you know you have three different kinds of tears and your diet directly affects your teardrop quality? Don’t worry, we didn’t either.

Dr Paul Ng, a comprehensive ophthalmologist specifically trained in retinal diseases says diet is key for healthy eyes.

“It’s important to have a well-balanced diet filled with fresh fruit and vegetables and plenty of omega-3 fats for top quality tears," he says.

Top five tips on what to eat to keep your eyes bright and sparkly: 1. Tomatoes Tomatoes are a great source of vitamin C as well as assisting in preventing excessive light exposure and damage to the eye.

2. Avocados Avocados do more than taste incredible, they are filled with vitamins that aid in warding off macular degeneration and shield intensive and damaging light.

3. Orange capsicum Considered the eye superfood, orange capsicum is packed with vitamins to improve night vision.

4. Fishy friends and good oils Dr Paul Ng recommends four servings of

cold-water oily fish a week to invest in your eye health. Consuming fish such as salmon, tuna, herring and mackerel 5-6 times a week decreases the risk of dry eye and is protective for the macula.

5. Spinach, kale and dark leafy greens Green vegetables, especially spinach, help fight cell damage as well as shielding intensive and damaging light. Dark leafy greens can also improve your long-term vision with their nutrient-packed goodness.

HEALTH AND WELLBEING New data has revealed one in three Aussies with poor vision admit to reduced physical health and wellbeing.

Eye surgeon Dr Paul Ng says most people don't know the important role eye sight plays.

“You don’t imagine that poor vision will have such an impact across so many aspects of a person’s life, but the recent study proves sight issues affect overall physical and mental wellbeing," he says.

Australians with poor sight are less likely to go out and see friends with 20 per cent of women and 13 per cent of men reducing their social life because of sight problems.

Sight problems have far-reaching effects and it is important to seek solutions to vision

problems. Dr Ng encourages patients to book an appointment to treat their general health and wellbeing and improve vision problems.

DISEASE One in seven Australians over 50 are showing signs of macular degeneration, the leading cause of blindness and severe vision loss in Australia. Macular degeneration is a group of degenerative diseases of the retina that cause progressive, painless loss of central vision, affecting the ability to see fine detail, drive, read and recognise faces.

Almost 1.2 million Australians have some evidence of macular degeneration with risk factors including smoking and family history.

You could have the early signs without knowing as many people ignore or attribute their sudden changes in vision to just getting older. Some common symptoms include difficulty in reading, distortion where straight line appear wavy or bent, distinguishing faces becomes a problem and dark patches or empty spaces appearing in the centre of your vision.

There are two types of macular degeneration.

The “dry” variety represents 90% of cases of the disease and 10% of blindness. The “wet” variety represents 10% of cases but are responsible for 90% of blindness.

Presently, there are no readily available treatments for “dry” macular degeneration.

The “wet” form progresses rapidly if untreated but fortunately early treatment with intravitreal injections can maintain vision in 90% of cases and improve vision significantly in 30-40%.

As always, early detection while vision is preserved ensures the Dr Paul Ng best results.

What mothers eat doesn’t just affect their children With Jeff Osborne from Vision Personal Training Bundall here we get our eating habits and attitudes from is complex.

I think it is fair to say that much of it directly comes from watching what our parents do from a very young age. However, it is becoming increasingly obvious and well-researched that many of our food choices and preferences don’t just come from the influence of the people around us. Much of it comes from the genetic influence of what our parents ate during three critical times: pregnancy, breast feeding and leading up to conception.

This week my wife underwent her Glucose Tolerance Test which is standard care for a woman who is 26 weeks pregnant.

What the test is trying to ascertain is how close, or far away from, being a diabetic she is. The risk of diabetes increases during pregnancy and gestational diabetes is becoming more and more prevalent. Some doctors are suggesting that testing for early signs of diabetes before a woman becomes pregnant is a better idea. Unfortunately, once insulin resistance happens in a pregnant woman (this is before gestational diabetes kicks in), those elevated

insulin levels are directly influencing the unborn baby. This will have an effect on how their body deals with carbs for the rest of their life. And, if that baby grows up to have children, it then passes that effect onto them.

Knowing that, the question becomes not when to start making healthy choices, but what and how. I understand that what to do can be confusing, especially considering that there is so much conflicting information about what to eat. We have been told everything from eggs will kill you to eggs are a superfood. With even the ‘experts’ changing their stance regularly, it is hard to know what to go with. There are a few principles that have remained true for all human existence (over 200,000 years). Sugar and high levels of carbohydrates are not good for us. Protein and fat are essential and the closer to natural the better. Fibre and vegetables are great for your gut. So, how can you implement these changes?

If food in your house is an afterthought and you throw things together at the last minute, you are sending the signal that what you eat is low priority. Taking the time each week to plan, shop and prepare food, not only saves you time, but, it also shows you value your health and are prepared to do something about it. I understand that things won’t always be perfect — I have done Maccas drive-thru with a car load of tired children — but the majority of the time you need to demonstrate good habits. One of the biggest breakthroughs with our children happened when we started preparing food for dinner. By making a big salad and cooking a heap of protein and putting it in the centre of the table, everyone decided what they wanted to eat. After a few nights, the kids started trying things and now strange foods like olives, mushrooms, cucumber and asparagus disappear first!

Making changes with kids can be tough. Sometimes there will be some serious push back. But, here is my guarantee! If you successfully make changes that lead to a healthier lifestyle, you will look back on that moment as one of the most important of your life and, the lives of your children, and even their children!

STUFFED SWEET POTATO MAKES 6 INGREDIENTS • 6 medium sweet potatoes • 1 cup cheddar cheese, grated • 8 basil leaves, roughly torn • 2 tbsp of chives, finely chopped • ¼ BBQ chicken, shredded* • 100g semi-dried tomatoes, chopped roughly • 100g full fat ricotta** • Micro chervil and basil leaves, to garnish DIRECTIONS Preheat the oven to 180°C. Place the sweet potatoes onto a baking tray and into the oven for 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes (until soft inside).

While the sweet potatoes are baking, combine the cheddar, basil leaves, chives, chicken, semi-dried tomatoes and ricotta. Season with salt and pepper and toss to combine.

Remove the potatoes from the oven and cut a slit in the top of each, lengthways. Spoon out most of the flesh and add it to the above mixture. Mash up the potato roughly and stir it through. Spoon the mixture into the sweet potato skins. Place back in the oven for a further 15 minutes.

Remove from oven and garnish with micro chervil and basil leaves to serve.

ARTICHOKE AND CHIVE COB LOAF SERVES 6 INGREDIENTS • 1 cob loaf • 600ml sour cream • 2 tbsp chives, finely chopped • 2 tbsp parsley, finely chopped

• 1 tsp salt • 1 spring onion, finely sliced • Bunch of heirloom carrots, sliced in half lengthways

• 230g jar of marinated artichokes • ½ tsp cumin • 1 tsp paprika DIRECTIONS Preheat the oven to 160°C. Cut a hole in the top of the cob loaf and set aside the ‘lid’. Pull out most of the bread from the middle of the cob loaf and set aside.

Drain the artichokes well and chop them up finely. Place into a bowl with the sour cream, chives, parsley, cumin, paprika and salt. Stir well to combine. Scoop the mixture into the cob loaf and place the lid back on.

Wrap in aluminum foil and place on a baking tray. Bake for 45 to 50 minutes or until it is warm throughout. Take the cob loaf out about half way through to stir the contents, place the lid back on and re-wrap it.

Top with spring onions. Serve with carrots, and the leftover bread.

CURRIED CHICKEN FILO LOGS MAKES 6 INGREDIENTS • 2 chicken thighs • 2 tbsp olive oil • 1 onion, diced • 2 garlic cloves, crushed • 2cm cube of ginger, grated • ½ cup Brussels sprouts, finely shredded • ½ cauliflower, finely chopped • ¼ cup frozen peas • 12 sheets thick style filo pastry • 1 tsp mustard seeds • 1 tsp cumin powder • 1 tsp garam masala • 1 tsp curry powder • 1 tbsp poppy seeds • 70g salted butter, melted FOR THE YOGHURT DIPPING SAUCE (OPTIONAL): • ½ cup Greek yoghurt • 1 tbsp shredded mint leaves • 2cm knob ginger, grated • Squeeze of lime juice • Pinch of salt • Spring onions, to garnish

DIRECTIONS Heat the olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. When the oil is hot, add the chicken thighs. Brown for 4 to 5 minutes on each side and remove from the pan.

Add the onion to the pan and sauté for 2 to 3 minutes. Add the garlic, ginger, cumin, mustard seeds, garam masala and curry powder and stir for a further 30 seconds.

Add the Brussels sprouts, cauliflower and frozen peas and stir for 2 minutes.

Remove from the heat.

Shred the chicken and add it to the vegetables. Season with salt and stir to combine. Allow to cool.

Preheat the oven to 180°C. Take two of the filo sheets, one on top of the other and brush the top piece with melted butter. Take 1/6th of the chicken mixture and place it in a line 4cm from the short edge, leaving the longer sides free to fold in. Fold in the edges and roll into a log. Prick holes in the top, brush with more butter and sprinkle with poppy seeds. Repeat until there is no mixture remaining. It should make 6.

Place on a tray in the oven for 15 minutes or until golden. Combine the ingredients for the yoghurt dipping sauce. Serve warm.

Recipe notes

*You can make this recipe with apples instead of quinces.

You don't need to bla nch them as long — a co uple of minutes in boiling water will do, until they are al dente.

QUINCE & RHUBARB GALETTE MAKES 6 INGREDIENTS FOR THE PASTRY: • 1 ½ cups plain flour • 1 tbsp white sugar • 125g chilled butter, chopped into 2cm cubes • ¼ cup cream • 3 tbsp cold water FOR THE FILLING: • 500g quinces (peeled, cored and chopped into eighths)* • 2 rhubarb spears (chopped into 4-5 cm pieces) • 80g butter • 3 tbsp brown sugar • Vanilla ice cream to serve

DIRECTIONS To make the pastry, place the plain flour and sugar into a food processor. Add the chilled butter and pulse until it resembles fine crumbs. Add the cream and cold water and pulse until it begins to form a dough.

Turn out onto a floured surface and gently squeeze it together to form a ball. Wrap in cling wrap and refrigerate for at least an hour. You can make the pastry a day in advance.

Bring a saucepan of water to the boil. When it's boiling, add the quince pieces. Blanch for 8 minutes. Drain and set aside to cool.

Preheat the oven to 190°C. Place the butter and brown sugar into a pan over low-medium heat. Continue to stir until the butter and sugar have melted and combined (around 4 minutes). Add the quince and rhubarb pieces and coat well with the sugar/ 43

butter mixture. Leave on the heat for around 2 to 3 minutes. Remove and set aside.

Roll the pastry between two pieces of nonstick backing paper. Roll to around 35cm x 25cm. Remove the top sheet of baking paper.

With tongs, carefully assemble the quince and rhubarb pieces onto the pastry, leave a free edge (around 4cm). Fold up the free edges and press together in the corners so that it holds in place. Drizzle a tablespoon of the butter/sugar syrup from the pan over the quince/rhubarb. Reserve the remaining syrup in a warm spot.

Gently slide the galette onto a baking tray and place in the oven for 40 minutes or until it is golden.

Remove from the oven and drizzle over the rest of the butter/brown sugar mixture.

Serve warm with vanilla ice cream.

t's 10am and you are at your desk with a mug of coffee. You don’t have a meeting scheduled so you figure it’s a good time to start work on writing the report you have been putting off.

The report is critical for moving your most important project forward and securing more funding. It also happens to be due in your boss's inbox in two days’ time.

You open a Word document and write the title of the report. You’re not quite sure what to write next. Just then, a notification flashes up on your screen — you have a new email from a prospect you have a new business proposal in with.“Better just check what they want,” you say to yourself.

You hop into your email and read it. The message isn’t actually that important and you don’t really need to respond. However, given you are now in your inbox, you start opening up emails you have already read earlier this morning and wondering if there is anything you can send a quick reply to. Fifteen minutes have now passed, and you remember you’re meant to be writing a report. You switch back into the Word document.

You’re still stuck on the first sentence. You have a few goes but nothing seems impactful enough. Just then your phone lights up with a notification that says you have five new likes on the photo you posted on Facebook last night. You open up Facebook and see who has liked it. You feel smug and popular as your photo now has 40 likes.

“I might just have a quick scroll through my news feed,” you think to yourself. Forty minutes, 10 likes, five comments, and one purchase of a gadget you’ll probably never use later, you shake yourself out of your

Facebook fog, and get back to your Word document.

It’s now 11am and a whole hour has passed and you’re not quite sure how that has happened.

If that sounds like your morning, you may be facing a distraction addiction. But don’t worry — you’re not alone. Research shows that we check our mobile phone an average of 85 times per day. Essentially, we can’t go a measly 10 minutes without just checking our phone for something.

Most of us are bombarded with notifications from our phone, our watch and our computer every few minutes. Distractions are everywhere. While you may think this is harmless, research from the University of London has shown that even just the presence of notifications on your screens decreases your IQ by an average of 10 points.

That’s the same loss you receive from not having slept the night before.

So, if you are ready to beat your battle with distraction, here are three tips on how to do so.

1. Switch off ALL notifications Oscar Wilde famously said,“I can resist everything except temptation.” Notifications tempt us. They flash up on our screen and scream “Read me now!” One of the simplest ways to break your distraction addition is to turn off all your notifications. This means across all your devices — not just one.

Removing temptations helps make it easier to keep focused on the task at hand.

While turning off notifications will probably make you sweat with anxiety for the first few days — who knows what important 45

status updates you may miss (!) — in the long run, this is the first step in changing your distraction habits.

2. Go on Flight Mode So, you’ve switched off all your notifications, but your phone still rings and beeps when people are trying to contact you through the good old-fashioned call or SMS. While you may feel perfectly happy sending the ‘Blocked Number’ to voicemail, it’s too easy to pick up the phone when your partner calls to have a little chat.

To avoid the temptation of the call or SMS, switch your phone to Flight Mode.

Just like turning off notifications, if you can eliminate the temptation to begin with, it’s far easier to create blocks of distraction-free time in your day.

3. Turn your phone to Grayscale Have you ever noticed how bright and colourful and fun the screen of your phone looks? Sort of like those bright and colourful and fun slot machines in Vegas. This is not a coincidence. The makers of many of the social media applications employ hundreds of Attention Engineers. That’s right, the very same people that try to make gambling addictive are also applying the same tricks to your phone.

Beat them at their own game by switching your phone to Grayscale via your settings. As Senior Editor of the Atlantic James Hamblin says,“Instagram, when everything is in grayscale, looks pretty awful.”

Breaking any addition is hard, but if you stick with these three tips, I can guarantee you will have broken your bad habits in no time.

No thanks, I need a moment Sarah Blinco encourages us to stop excusing ourselves ne evening when my nephew was very small, he dramatically stood up at the dinner table to declare, ‘Mummy, I need a moment’! Kids are hilarious. Unfortunately, as we grow older, we tend to drop the naive honesty and, when we really do need a moment, we rarely request it.

Can you relate to worrying excessively about managing other people’s wants over your own needs, saying ‘yes’ on autopilot, and over-explaining why you need to say ‘no’ to something?

With Mother’s Day upon us mid-month, I feel it’s pertinent to be one who stands up against ‘people-pleasing’. Mums are renowned for putting themselves first, which is why this topic is top of mind. That Severe said, please do not take this symptoms you may editorial as a generalisation; recognise are saying I will not stereotype because there are people in my circles yes to everything, (yours too, I’m sure) — men and including things I felt women — wearing all sorts of hats and still uncomfortably uncomfortable doing, squirming at the table tagged, and doing things when ‘people pleasers’.

I was totally exhausted, I used to think the only way forward was to always do ‘good’ all to keep everyone by others, at my own expense. else pleased.

Thankfully, I had my unhealthy people-pleasing habits pointed out. Severe symptoms you may recognise are saying yes to everything, including things I felt uncomfortable doing, and doing things when I was totally exhausted, all to keep everyone else pleased.

Last month was buzzing with positive energy on the GC — an extra-long weekend and the Commonwealth Games.

Fun times (especially when Prince Charles waved at me… honestly)! By the same token, I dare say many of you were like me and scrambling to fit it all in; events with family and friends; the never-ending trail of life admin; travel for some; work for others; and even moving house (I empathise with a fellow Get it girl who spent her holiday on that task). Then there’s the nerve-racking life stuff that involves not just physical input but emotional investment too, like taking care of unwell loved-

ones or saying farewell to those you won’t see in a while.

A scroll through Instagram and Facebook unsurprisingly showcased our good-time stories, but not the reality of the anxiety and over-commitment issues I was witnessing (then, and on-going for all of us). The familiar strain on faces across town reminded me that we need to practice balancing the line between self-care and selflessness.

Being very unhappy due to a long-term ‘yes habit’ and putting others first (even your most beloved) at all costs is not setting a positive example, but instead, sets a negative precedent.

There was a time when people-pleasing generated tears and havoc in my life. It’s why I feel for those around me when I recognise the tension and unnecessary lengthy explanations about not being able to say ‘yes’; or for those who regularly over-promise their time but always cancel on plans at the last minute (not a good look).

Take a moment. What’s the worst that can happen if you just say, ‘no’?

As friends and colleagues too, we need to look out for each other. Don’t let another people-please for you, if you’re honestly aware they may not have the capacity right now.

I still struggle to say ‘no’. I actually get excited about a lot of things and love to say ‘yes’! But, I’ve made peace with a few things in this regard: I can’t please everyone, but I’m finally ok with that. I can do it all, just not all at once! I can say no, in my own way, by managing expectations and understanding my priorities. If there’s guilt, then I just have to deal with it. Keeping all people happy all of the time is rather impossible, and I’ve actually realised a ‘yes habit’ can lead to your good intentions and time being taken for granted. Ouch.

I’ve learnt that saying ‘no’ is not necessarily selfish, and saying ‘yes’ to compromise and setting boundaries is wise.

Offering a thoughtful ‘no’ will give you greater peace and better position you to support others in the long run.
