Glass of French Champagne on arrival

LETTER FROM

Kathleen Editor

amily … it is potentially one of the most emotive words in any language. It’s what ties us to home and plays a major part in who we become and how we find a place in this world. But family is many things, it can mean a blood bond but also includes those family members we choose for ourselves. Simply think of those friends you ran through the playground with as children, the ones at college who supplied coffee and accepted you for who you are, and your friends who have stuck with you throughout this crazy thing called life.

Mother’s Day Brunch

Family transcends borders or any boundaries of time and place, and though they may drive you crazy with their quirks you know you wouldn’t have them any other way. Yes, you may have gotten tired of your little sister stealing your top without asking, but you would do anything for her. Admittedly, there are so many occasions you learn more from younger siblings (even though you’re older), and older siblings will always be people you look up to.

Date: Sunday, 12 May 2019 Time: 10am - 1pm

This also goes for our fur babies, I know my little dog teaches me a lot about what life and family means. She reminds me that a warm welcome goes a long way, to follow your gut when it comes to people, to take time to smell the flowers and that it’s okay to let others take care of you too. Also, that it’s important to do your best to protect your pack and love fearlessly.

Looking for a way to say thanks?

With Mother’s Day coming up too, it is time for us to reflect upon the role motherhood plays in modern families and celebrate motherhood in all its modern forms. Whether it’s choosing to nurture in different ways, single-parent families or those going through the journey to motherhood. So, here’s to all those hopeful mums, those taking on the duties of motherhood and our own mums. This and every day we’ll be toasting you! We have plenty of fascinating and inspiring reads in this issue, covering fashion, art, travel, the amazing Hetty and Kayleen Johnston (who do us the honour of gracing our cover), and our sisters in the outback. This issue is also dedicated to you, Get it’s own family! Enjoy …

GET IT I GET THINKING

Celebrate motherhood — with Leanne Hart —

• fashion • accessories

f I had the power to change one thing in my life, it would be to up the ante on my courage. I don’t want to be the Lion from The Wizard of Oz any longer. To have the innate ability to believe in myself, to fight for the cause, to protect my family and to give my friends advice, whilst holding all of their hands, and to do it without fear, without a seconds thought or at worst with self-doubt. My mother was the strongest person I have ever met. She was this 5 ft 1 and a half (the half was very important) tiny woman who had the strength of a Titan, in her personality, in her beliefs, in her passion for making things right, and her unconditional love for her family and her friends. She never backed down from a fight. She put herself in harms way with aggressive teenage kids and obnoxious drunken neighbours, but she showed them all respect through tough love and they eventually gave in to her and to themselves. She strongly believed that there was good in everyone, no matter what they had done or what they were about to do. She believed in them, she gave them the strength and the tools to be better people. She was tough, she was fearless and she led by example. She loved unconditionally (with conditions). Dare to challenge her with disrespect and the wrath shall fall upon you, usually in the shape of a broom as you were giving her cheek while she was sweeping the driveway. I’m not sure how a 5 ft 1 and a half woman can wield a broom and mange to hit you on the backside from about 6 feet away, but it worked. There was no more cheek and you were grounded for a week. Only those of my era will actually know what that means. My mum fostered around 100 or so children. She gave them boundaries, rules, chores and respect, and for the most part a new way of life. They became thrivers not survivors. They still write to her, and she’s been gone for 16 years now. "But what did she give you?" I hear you ask. She gave me the best. I had a mother, a mentor, a psychologist, a masseuse (head rubs whilst watching the black and white TV), a chemist, a surgeon – splinter removal (only that potentially needed stitches after she’d dug through to China to find it), a really bad hairdresser (when I ended up with a bloody bowl cut) and, all in all, the best friend I could ever ask for. So, I personally would like to dedicate this to the most amazing woman that I hope I will meet again someday. Take a moment to celebrate the day that recognises the fact that we all exist because our mothers did the hard yards (lest we forget the hours they spent caring for us ). I wish all mothers a beautiful celebration, whether you have children, fur babies, friends or a love for fine food and shoes, we all deserve a day to celebrate us.

ravery takes many forms, many different faces. It’s a fearless soldier running headfirst into battle, a lioness protecting her cubs from predators, a hero facing the monsters in the night. Hetty and Kayleen Johnston are all of these things. Fearless soldiers, protective lionesses, heroes facing monsters in the night. Hetty Johnston, the founder of child protection organisation Bravehearts, has spent the last twenty-two years fighting to break the silence on child sexual abuse and advocating for the victims of such abuse. Her daughter, Kayleen, is one of those victims. Mother and daughter now stand hand in hand; facing the incessant waves of red tape, criticism and obstacles that challenge the cause they fight for. They are strong, resilient and brave in their pursuit to protect children. And it all began twenty-two years ago with one tiny sentence, three words, eleven letters. This is the story of the bravest hearts. “He touches me” Hetty was in the throes of life in politics when her husband, Ian, decided to take their daughter Kayleen to visit his family in New Zealand. As she always did, Hetty drove them to their airport and waved goodbye as they walked through the international gates. “He was holding her against him, going down the escalator at the international airport and she was looking behind him back up at me at the top, waving, and she was crying,” Hetty explains. “You can just tell with your child – when they cry – you just know when something isn’t right.” But with Ian’s soothing reassurance, they boarded the plane and left. They arrived at his father’s house – Poppy’s house – with a warm greeting from friends and family. Poppy had even prepared a special room, just for young Kayleen, adorned with her favourite colour: pink. But when it was time to go to bed, Kayleen became distraught, refusing to sleep in her special room. Ian took her to his room instead, patiently sitting with her until she calmed down. “He lay down with her in the bed and asked her,‘What’s wrong?’”, Hetty tells, “I’m scared.” “Scared of who?” “Poppy.” “Why are you scared of poppy?” And then in one sentence, three words, eleven letters, their whole world changed forever. A family torn apart, a little girl’s innocence shattered, a mother and father’s heart broken. “He touches me.” In that pivotal moment, Ian faced an agonising choice. “He had a choice. He could either tell Kayleen not to say anything and protect his father. Or he could tell me and he knew what would happen if he told me. He’s been married to me a long time, he knows I take no prisoners when it comes to our children,” says Hetty. “So being the most beautiful man on the planet, he chose his daughter.” Once his family had gone to bed, Ian snuck out of the house and used a payphone down the street to call Hetty. “Life as you know it just ends, in a split second,” Hetty explains, “People say that all the time but until you experience it, you don’t know how true it is.” “I couldn’t pick her up, I couldn’t hold her. My husband either. He’s stuck in the house with the offender, a man that he loves. It’s like a death, but they’re still alive.” With thousands of kilometres between them, Hetty did the only

she knew how: she went to work. “I got up, went outside and I screamed the most revolting obscenities known to man. I just had to get it out. I screamed and I cried. "And once I’d done that, I went in and turned the computer on.” And that’s where Hetty’s battle began. She wrote a letter to the family in New Zealand, telling them what had happened. She soon discovered he had been sexually offending against almost every female member of the family for forty years; two generations of mothers and their children. And not one of them ever shared his secret. That was until Kayleen spoke up. He was convicted and sentenced to four years in jail. He served two and a half. Hetty quit politics. She had a new fight that needed every ounce of her energy and focus. The family sought help, guidance, counselling but to no avail. They approached children’s charities but no one wanted to know about child sexual assault. “It was too scary, too disgusting, too confronting,” Hetty explains, “No one was talking about it, no one wanted a bar of it.” Except Hetty did. And where her heartbreak and agony collided with her resilience and tenacity, Bravehearts was born. Breaking the silence Bravehearts is now Australia’s leading child protection organisation and has been breaking the silence for over twenty years. From humble beginnings in a small house with just a handful of volunteers, Hetty and Kayleen - who works alongside her mother at Bravehearts - have set their sights firmly on the future. Their mission is simple; to prevent child sexual assault in our society. Their vision is to see Australia become the safest place in the world to raise a child. But there is still a long road ahead, fraught with adversity. “It happens to one in five kids,” Hetty explains,“It’s going to come home to roost. “If it hasn’t already, it will, sadly. Someone you know, someone close to you. "If people out there think that they don’t know anybody, they just don’t know it, the person just hasn’t disclosed to them. If it’s not your mother or your father and it’s not you or your kids, maybe it’s who your kids marry, who they play with in the school yard.” Bravehearts push for change; for legislative reform to protect children and break the silence and the stigma around child sexual assault. “It was actually illegal for me to speak publicly about child sexual abuse at the time,” Hetty explains,“But we changed that law in section 189 of the Child Protection Act.” “I told them that I am not going to tell my child to be quiet, to not tell anybody. Because the moment I do that, I put a ball and chain around her ankle that says to her: you’re less than. "It says you’re damaged. You’ve got something to be ashamed of. You’ve got something to hide. "It’s the three S’s: the silence, the secrecy and the shame. They are a paedophile’s best friend and our kid’s worst enemy.” Amongst the parliamentary red tape, lobbying for legislative change, finding the funds the keep the fight alive and battling a society that didn’t want to know about child sexual assault, there came the stories. Families who had been torn apart by abuse, victimised and assaulted by the Family Court system. One of those stories that really struck Hetty was that of Gill Hamersley and her daughter, Abbey. Abbey was 17 years old when she committed suicide in 2013. Prior to her death she suffered from mental health issues including anorexia, bulimia, self-harm and multiple suicide threats and a serious but failed attempt. Abbey had been sexually abused by her father, Gill’s ex-husband,

since she was young. Despite being convicted of the sexual assault of Abbey’s best friend, her father was granted access to her and her two sisters throughout, and following, his incarceration. Despite Gill’s repeated and desperate attempts to protect her children, the Family Court allowed him access to the girls. The courts treated Gill as a hysterical and vindictive wife, rather than what she was: a protective mother. In May 2013, Abbey disclosed to her mother that her father had abused her. Again, Gill sought protection orders for her daughters. Tragically, in the November of that year, Abbey took her life by overdosing on medication. Ten days after she died, the Child Protection Authorities sent a letter to Gill stating that ‘the department has assessed that [Abbey’s father] has harmed Abbey and is at risk of harming [Abbey’s younger sister] if they were to have unsupervised contact’. It was too late for Abbey. But Bravehearts wouldn’t let it be too late for other children. “I flew over to Western Australian to meet Gill, Abbey’s mother,” Hetty says, “I told her that if we could get the money, if we could make it happen, we would call it ‘Abbey’s Project’ for her sweet little girl.” In June 2016, Bravehearts launched Abbey’s Project, a Discussion Paper that highlighted the failings of the Family Law System and calling for a Royal Commission. The Paper put forward 30 recommendations, the first being that a Royal Commission be established to scrutinise the failed Family Law System. “I cried,” Hetty admits, “I cried every day. I still do.” Hetty admits that before Bravehearts started looking into the Family Law System, before she cried for children like Abbey and mothers like Gill, she was strong; resilient to the evil in the world. But that has changed. “It’s so woeful, it’s so dangerous and it’s so now,” Hetty explains, “It’s not 20 years ago, it’s now, it’s today. It’s our kids, I’ve looked in their eyes, I’ve seen these children. I know what’s happening for them and there’s nothing I can do to stop it, there’s nothing their parents can do. Their parents have to hand their kids over to offenders every other weekend. “The kids are screaming. Parents can’t even take their children to the doctor. And if they disclose, parents are meant to change the subject. It is absolutely a gross violation of human rights.

“And for the first time, I’m not coping as well as I have done. This is actually really bad. “Parliament knows, they know. And what human being can know what I know – and believe me, they know – and not move heaven and earth to fix it?” And so Hetty is doing just that; she’s moving heaven, earth and everything in between. “I’ve hit the ceiling” In March this year, Hetty announced that she was running for the Senate as an Independent in the May Federal election. “They [parliament] would rather not fix it, they would rather look the other way and I feel sick about that and shame for this country. And that’s why – I can’t raise my pitch, my sadness, my anger, my disgust any more. I’m at the ceiling; I’ve hit the ceiling. The only thing I have left to do now is run for the Senate and that’s why I’m doing it.” Hetty admits that the fight has worn her down. She is tired of being bound by red tape, watching helplessly as children fall victim to monsters, and then victim again to the Family Law System. “I have to take the fight to them,” she admits, “I don’t know how I’m going to go. I have no money. But I have a big heart and a big passion and a lot of amazing people around me so we’re just going to try. That’s all I can do.” Hetty confesses that the battle has not come without scars. From the moment her daughter whispered, “Poppy” through her tears, Hetty's life and her mind has been consumed with child sexual abuse and that is a dark place to exist. “I am so battered and bruised. I am so tired. But I will not give up this fight, mark my words, I will not.” Hetty Johnston is not a greedy politician with a thirst for power, fame and publicity. She is a lioness protecting not only her own cubs, but those of every family in our country. And that takes the very bravest heart.

I got up, went outside and I screamed the most revolting obscenities known to man. I just had to get it out. I screamed and I cried.

GET IT I LOCAL PROFILE

artist's eye

The Q: Can you tell us a little bit about the moment you discovered your love for art? Jeska: My love of art comes from my childhood and having fond memories creating with my mum. She would share her knowledge of art history and artistic skills. When I was older, we travelled to France together where she taught me about the master painters. I was especially drawn to impressionist artists like Renoir, Degas and Van Gogh.Their use of colour and light was mesmerising. It amazed me how beautifully they could capture a story through movement, colour matching and pattern work. Q: How have you developed your amazing talent as an artist over the past five years? Jeska: The last five years of my career have been a discovery, from sketching to realism. I enjoy building a piece like a jigsaw puzzle, finding the pattern within the tiny detail in the image. For example, painting the lace in the image of Grace Loves Lace founder Megan Ziems was just another way to add texture, pattern and delicacy. It became a metaphor for how I wanted to portray my work. Focusing on strength, fragility and intricacy. Q: I understand that you use art as a form of therapy for your epilepsy; while your seizures have been reduced through anti-seizure medication, you find the meditative process and detailed work calming and positive. Have there been any further benefits mentally and physically? Jeska: Yes, it has taught me how to maintain focus. Physically it has been more of a challenge as I’m usually in one position for hours at a time, but that has taught me to look after myself a lot better. Q: You have just completed your submission for the Archibald Prize with your exquisite work, a portrait of Grace Loves Lace founder Megan Ziems. When did you decide to enter and what was your inspiration behind this subject? Did it draw from your desire to feature strong and inspirational women? May 2019

Jeska: I’ve always been drawn to strong, creative, ambitious women. I have followed Megan’s work for some time and when the opportunity arose (to work with her) I was so taken aback. My obsession with lace and patterns combined with storytelling was the perfect marriage. Q: What kind of art mediums are you drawn to most and why? For example, pencils, charcoal, water colours etc. Jeska: I prefer to use oil paints because of the vibrant colours and silky texture. Q: The Archibald Prize is Australia’s oldest and second richest portraiture prize. Established in 1921, only 10 women have been awarded the prestigious accolade. It is a huge achievement to be submitting your work and representing female artists in this area. What would your message be to women wanting to follow their artistic interests? Jeska: To any artist wanting to build a career I would say,“Don’t give up, don’t listen to your inner saboteur. Stay strong, listen to others and to yourself, stay true to your aesthetic, find your signature and tell a story.” Q: Does the Gold Coast provide a source of inspiration or do you go elsewhere to get inspired? Jeska: Growing up close to the ocean on the Gold Coast has been a huge inspiration. I love the environment and have had two solo shows (Earth Warriors and Beneath the Surface) honouring those protecting our land and seas. My inspiration stems from two points: the strength and fragility of our environment and in turn the strength and delicacy of our selves within society. Q: You were also a finalist in the 2018 Portia Geach Memorial Awards and now going for the Archibald Prize. What's next for you? Jeska: A lot of work! I am planning to put together another show. Keep an eye out!

GET IT I FEATURE

To our in the

Get it’s Kathleen Loxton looks to the heartland of Australia and investigates how we can do our part to help our sisters in the outback mages have flashed across our television screens recently, heartbreaking visions of our Austrian farmers losing their livelihoods and precious animals in one fell swoop of devastating weather. Whether it is drought or floods affecting our spectacular rural areas, farmers are bound by changes of climate and the state of the economy. It can be tricky to know how we can help from the Gold Coast, but our sisters in the outback need our assistance and Get it recently met a couple of remarkable women who demonstrate the good that can happen when we lend a helping hand.

Examples of the current situation

• The February 2019 floods in inland north Queensland did unprecedented damage, and the impact is still being felt today. The ABC recently reported that the cost could near $2b. They stated more than 10,000 kilometres of fencing was swept away and 664,000 head of stock is estimated to have been lost across the total area. • Last month news.com.au reported that, “On the Victorian border 140km west of Albury, farmers who usually celebrate harvest at the annual Finley Rice Strippers Ball in May will this year share war stories of barren paddocks and lean times.” They stated farmers are suffering in silence because they can’t afford the time or fuel to see mates.

Support from the Gold Coast

Anni Diamond, founder of Outback Beauty May 2019

Angels and creator of phenomenal Facebook page Adopt A Farmers Wife, spoke to us about helping out right here from the Gold Coast. Anni started Outback Beauty Angels as a way to connect with female farmers across Australia and provide them with the things that are readily available to us; including everything from desperately needed everyday items to beauty treatments.“The women in farming communities are its backbone. At the same time, they are still women and even to have a favourite shade of lipstick means so much,” Anni explained. She continued,“Adopt A Farmers Wife grew from this idea, because I wanted to find a way for city women to be able to connect with women in remote areas across Australia. What they need is support and to know they are appreciated.” Anni spoke of the importance of being grateful for farmers and showing them support every day, not just when we see a drought on the news.“From the moment we wake up in the morning, have milk with our cereal and grab our leather handbag as we walk out our front door, to the moment we get home and put our woollen pyjamas on, we should be grateful to farmers. There are so many things we take for granted! Just like when we go to supermarkets it’s as if food just ‘fell out of the sky’, but it has to come from somewhere,” said Anni. Currently, Anni is in the process of planning a luncheon to collect products for our sisters in the outback; including items like lipsticks, nail polish and tampons. Furthermore, through Adopt A Farmers Wife, we are encouraged to 20

The Ornamental Farmers Wife

donate our clothes and books too. This will not only help our sisters in the outback, but their children also, who will grow up with this fantastic example of comradery. Anni explained what is hugely beneficial in creating these online discussions, which need to be fostered and cherished, is that it gives women in the outback the chance to speak up about what it is that they need.

An example of hope

The internet has provided many farmers with the ability to share their stories, their heartbreak, raise what awareness and support they can, and made it possible to connect with Australians all over. Social media has been instrumental in this and is a fantastic way for Gold Coasters to get involved in supporting our farmers. By giving even just a little bit of your time, support and love, amazing things can happen. What’s even more incredible? These efforts have a life-changing impact on real families and real people, who are so deserving of our help. Another special Facebook page we are huge fans of at Get it is Elli Lockett’s Facebook page, The Ornamental Farmers Wife. On March 2, 2019, Elli posted this about her family’s 180-

TIPS ON SUPPORTING OUR FARMERS: 1 Choose the right milk! Look out for brands like Norco and Pauls, or smaller brands that are independently farmer owned. 2 Check you are buying as much Australian made, distributed and owned produce as possible. 3 This goes for your eggs too, try to buy as local as possible (like from Pace Farm).

“ The women in farming communities are its backbone... What they need is support and to know they are appreciated.

Anita Jamison

acre dairy business situated near Neerim, in Victoria … “I’m going to just rip this off like a band aid, probably more for my own benefit than yours, that sadly this might be one of my last posts as The Ornamental Farmers Wife. (I’ll pretend I just didn’t hear the clink of celebratory drinks!) "As of last night, my husband and I have become one of the latest casualties to the punishing conditions of this industry... Drought, the sky rocketing costs of production, paired with the pitiful milk price, like most of you has hit us hard. "The last 16 months we have lived pay to pay, selling off whatever we could get our hands on to keep going, to buy feed when the rain didn’t come, to pay bills when the milk cheque was short, borrowing money up to our eyeballs just to put food on the table, and get through just ‘one more month’, at one stage we even accepted help from the legendary Aussie Helper crew, despite it putting an enormous dent in our pride. But there’s nothing left to sell, and the devil already has my soul. "As I write this through tears a part of me feels relief, the other - utter devastation. The relief comes at the thought of ending this constant stress. Our life at times has felt like a balloon, blown out as far as the rubber could stretch and all it would take is one tiny pin prick

to blow the arse out of the whole thing. But the heart break comes from years of blood, sweat and tears we put into this to make it work, it’s hard to see the state of the land we put so much into, not be able to give anything back, it comes from the sense of failure and the dreams that will never come to fruition. I feel sadness for the hope and pride behind his smile in this photo. "Last week my hubby filmed a video of support for everyone in this industry, from those that are struggling through this crippling dry spell to the farmers up north under water. He wanted you to know we feel your heartache. I’m not sure he realised at the time that we are one of you, or maybe he just couldn’t bring himself to admit it. He doesn’t cope with being at the hands of something he can’t control, the weather. He’s worked through the exhaustion 7 days a week, used every skill he has to improve the situation, I’ve been by his side as he’s questioned everything he knows as a fourth-generation farmer, but no matter how hard he works he can’t make it rain. "As resilient as we are everyone has a breaking point, it hasn’t just taken its toll on our finances, it’s chipped away at our mental health, I’ve watched it change the man I married, once full of life, with big ideas and dreams, he used to be the life of the party, 21

now he suffers from depression. My husband buries his head in his phone and denial as he spends his days feeding his girls in the hope it will make a difference in the vat, but it doesn’t, by the time he gets home he’s a zombie. It’s put cracks in our marriage, our children suffer from bouts of anxiety when they can see how drained their parents are at the end of every day. They watched and listened as we fell apart last night as the realisation of the decision we had to make smacked us right in the chest and shattered all five of our black hearts. "Unless a miracle occurs by the end of next week we are done. There is no long-term certainty for us, sure we could fight through another month, our arse firmly out of our pants, but we would rather get out on our own terms, before someone takes the decision out of our hands. I’m incredibly proud of what we have achieved together, the road has been long and f*ck*ng dusty but we have laughed, cried, wanted to bury each other, spent our days side by side, he’s taught me how to be more than an Ornamental Farmers Wife, he taught me to be a farmer and that’s something no one can take away from us.” Shortly after posting this Elli was inundated with messages from her beloved followers, requesting ways to donate. People connected with her honesty, her story and her humour, which remains fierce despite all her and her family have been through. Bravely, Elli took up the fight again, creating a GoFundMe page from advice she received and initiating an adopt-a-cow fundraiser. Since then, all their milkers have been adopted and her blog has grown to an audience of over 9,000: this and their determination saved the farm. This emotional and physically draining journey is one so many Australian farmers face daily, and farmers like Elli need our help. We may not be able to make the drought stop, but we can do our part by buying Australian produce, supporting our farmers and helping a sister out! So, Get it girls, reach out to your sisters in the outback, connect and make a difference. May 2019

GET IT I REAL-TALK

The life of a

tall

girl

Kaileigh Carew, Get it’s resident tall girl, pens an open letter to men everywhere… ear men, Yes, I am tall. This may surprise you but I do actually own a mirror and am constantly reminded of my 181 centimetres of lankiness on a daily basis. Being a tall girl is a struggle: getting forced to stand at the back of every group photo, finding a man who is a six foot four Chris Hemsworth look-alike to date, getting abused at festivals for blocking people’s views - the list is endless (almost as long as my legs). However, I just wanted to let all males know, that just because I am most likely taller than you, does not mean that this is an open invitation for commentary. Over the years I have encountered quite a few men who feel as though they need to make judgement on how tall I am, whether it be in a positive or negative way (mostly negative might I add). Let me give you a few examples of the ‘types’ of guys out there who always have something to say about my long limbs. The short guy How ironic: the small, five foot nothing guy, who is hardly tall enough to go on the kids

rides at Dreamworld, has the audacity to make a comment on height. Can’t they go and bother someone of their own, well, height? The issue with the short guys is that they try to make themselves feel better (and taller) by bringing us down.Tall poppy syndrome anyone? I have absolutely nothing against short people, I just want to make that clear, but as soon as you make me feel self-conscious about my stature, you can bet that I’m going to snap. Example one: I was at the races when a height-challenged and slightly intoxicated male approached me. Without even saying hello he quips,“Wow, you’re really tall. No guys must like you.” He then proceeded to chat to me like he didn’t just insult me and then asked for my number - I think we all know how that one ended. They just need to be brought down a notch or two (or up) because insulting me when you are the size of my eight-year-old cousin is not the way to my heart. The arrogant guy Let’s talk about the guys that know they could be Bradley Cooper’s double and just

happen to be six foot three - these guys are the worst! You’ll be dancing at a bar, see him in the corner of your eye drinking his Corona and you’ll start to pull out all the stops to get noticed, because you don’t want to be the one to approach him (even though it’s 2019 and all). However, your J-Lo booty shake and Miley Cyrus Wrecking Ball moves just don’t seem to be making the cut and neither does the fact that you are the tallest girl in the room, which makes you - quite literally - unmissable. Well, I’ve finally figured out why the guys we want to approach us, never do.‘Those guys’ apparently consider us as ‘unapproachable’.Yep, ouch - it hurts! Sadly, I have been told numerous times by men, that my height makes me intimidating and unapproachable. Did this make me feel like I was going to be alone forever, growing old with my 27 cats - absolutely! Luckily, I just happen to be an animal person… The overconfident male Then we have what I like to call ‘the cocky guy’. He knows that every girl in the room is swooning over all six foot five of him, so what does he do about it? Well, he approaches each girl in the room of course - even us tall girls who are apparently ‘unapproachable.’These are the types of guys who don’t consider us intimidating, even though I wish they did because they set us up for heartbreak. In my experience, the problem with these types of guys is that they are so in love with themselves that they just don’t have enough room in their hearts for anyone else, especially us because we are so lanky. Don’t stress though my fellow tall girls, we dodged a bullet there. So men. Dear, dear men. Just because I am taller than your average girl does not give you the right to enhance your ego by dragging mine down. I love all of my lankiness and trust me, it has its perks too. At festivals, I don’t need to sit up on your shoulders to get a good view and I don’t need you to reach the Vegemite from the top shelf, and I sure as hell don’t need you to comment on my height because I know I’m tall, and I just happen to like it! Yours sincerely,

Kaileigh

GET IT I BEAUTY

Get the most from your makeup palette with these clever tricks When it comes to makeup, the rule is simple: one is never enough. One colour, one lipstick, one bronzer – it just won’t do. Enter: the humble makeup palette. A carefully curated collection of colours that give you everything you need to create your desired look. But why is it that we always seem to use the same two or three colours, and the rest just go to waste? This month, we’re diving into our makeup bags and showing you how you can get the most out of your favourite palette.

PERFECT YOUR

PALETTE

Eye Shadow Palette The trick here is to

understand the shape of your eye and how to create a gradual, blended look with the different shades. Start with a lighter shade in the inner corner and arch of your brow. Use a medium shade in your crease to create dimension and finally, finish off with a darker shade in the outer V of your eye. If you want to add a pop of bright colour (neons are on trend right now – try them if you dare!) use a thin brush to apply it along your lash line. Less is more when it comes to bright colours!

NYX PROFESSIONAL MAKEUP Love Contours All Palette, $39, priceline.com.au

Contour Palette Make sure you understand your face shape so that you can create the right contour shape. Blend the darkest shades along the upper edge of your forehead, down the edges of the bridge of your nose, into the contour of your cheeks and along the bottom edge of your jawbone. Then apply the lighter shades to the areas of your face that the sun first hits. This will give you a defined, radiant look, even when you’ve just rolled out of bed!

Contour Blush & Glow Powder Palette, $59, skino2.com.au

NARS Audacious Lipstick Palette, $75, mecca.com.au

Contour Blush & Glow Powder Palette, $59, skino2.com.au

Voila, go forth a nd perfect girls!

Lipstick Palette Now to have a little fun! Our best advice for lip colours? Experiment! You can choose a single shade from the palette and apply it across your pout or mix a few shades together to create a custom colour. Or if you’re really game, try the ombre lip trend. Line your lips with a darker lip shade and then fill them in with a lighter colour. Make sure to rub your lips together to blend the colours and voila, the perfect pout! 31

GET IT I HEALTH

Don't break my heart

This month we’re getting our hearts healthy. Our achy, breaky hearts… f there is one part of our body that deserves a little more love and attention for what it puts up with, it’s our hearts. On top of pumping blood throughout the body via our circulatory system, supplying oxygen and nutrients to the tissues and removing carbon dioxide and other wastes, it tolerates a lot of, well, stress. That bad boy with the gorgeous arms that broke up with you over text message and broke your – yep, heart. The panic-inducing moment you caught your toddler playing on your white doona with a green permanent marker – yep, heart attack! So how do we take better care of this vital organ? This month, we’re loving our hearts so they can keep loving us back! Put down the cigarettes These days, we shouldn’t need to remind you how damaging smoking is to your health. Smoking affects the vessels that supply blood to your heart and smoking also increases the stiffness of the blood vessels making it harder for them to expand and contract as needed and more likely to split. These changes to the arteries can cause a heart attack, stroke or angina. You’re not Don Draper and smoking is not cool – quit, now! Get your cholesterol in check Cholesterol is a fatty substance that is carried around our bodies in our blood. You may have heard of it in a lot of butter and margarine marketing! Excess cholesterol can cause blockages in the arteries. Limit your intake of fats and maintain a healthy, balanced diet including lots of green, leafy vegetables! Keep cool under pressure Don’t assume that if there is something wrong with your blood pressure that you’ll just ‘feel it’. There are usually no warning signs of high blood pressure, so you can have it

There are usually no warning signs of high blood pressure, so you can have it and not know. That’s why it’s important to get it checked. and not know. That’s why it’s important to get it checked. Blood pressure that’s high over a long time is one of the main risk factors for heart disease. As you get older, the chances of having persistently high blood pressure increases. Good news? You can pick up affordable, easy-to-use blood pressure monitors from your local Chempro Chemist so you can check it regularly at home. Be sensible Staying physically active and maintaining a healthy, nutritious diet is common sense but sometimes, we get complacent! Regular cardiovascular exercise is great for your heart health, and will also help you to maintain a healthy weight. This is crucial to reduce your

risk of heart disease and ensure your heart is functioning at its best. Avoid bad boys Our most important piece of advice? Avoid bad boys. You know the ones with charming smiles, gorgeous biceps and a tendency to hook up with your sister behind your back? You heart doesn’t need that kind of ache. Oh and we also highly recommend reducing the risk of a heart attack by keeping the permanent markers far out of reach of your toddler! For all your heart health tools including blood pressure monitors, see the team at your local Chempro Chemist.

GET IT I HEALTH

Dr Gary Swift, the Gold Coast’s renowned Obstetrician and Gynaecologist who has worked in reproductive medicine, surgery and IVF for 20 years, gives us his insight into fertility and IVF s a senior specialist with Queensland Fertility Group (QFG) and The Fertility Centre (TFC), I have experienced all aspects of infertility and IVF here on the Gold Coast and understand the challenges many couples face. One in six couples struggles to conceive without help in today’s society. The underlying causes are many, and still for 15 per cent of these couples the cause will be ‘unexplained’ despite investigation. Factors affecting fertility may be male related in 30-40 per cent of couples (toxic, occupational or infectious exposures, nutritional deficiencies, congenital conditions, trauma, surgery or unknown). Some are reversible but most are not. Sometimes, of course, males are not involved at all – for instance, single women and female same sex couples. Donor sperm then needs to considered. Female factors account for almost two thirds of infertility. These are broadly related to eggs and ovulation factors and/or pelvic conditions (infections, May 2019

adhesions, endometriosis, tubal obstruction, uterine anomalies – congenital and acquired). Systemic disorders, which may be endocrinological, immunological, nutritional, infectious or genetic, account for some cases. Advancing maternal age is one of our greatest challenges in modern assisted reproduction. Discussing reproductive biology in women is one of the most common things I do in almost 20 years of practice in this area. Certain concepts are fundamental to understanding why fertility can be a challenge for some couples. Women get all their eggs a few months before they are born. That is their lifetime supply (approximately 2 million at birth) and whether a woman is pregnant, breast feeding or on the contraceptive pill, these eggs will decline in number with time. Eggs or ‘Oocytes’ have a ‘life cycle’ as such, and each one has only a very small chance of maturing, releasing and being available to fertilise. Many eggs that are released have genetic mistakes that means they will not 34

fertilise properly even with a ‘good’ sperm. By menopause, which averages at 51.7 years of age in Australia, all eggs have effectively gone. In reality the ‘good ones’ are depleted many years earlier. Women, because of biological factors, are most fertile between 16 and 30 years of age. A steady decline is occurring after this, which gains momentum from 35 and much more rapidly from 40. The chance of a healthy couple trying for a baby and succeeding where no infertility factors are present is about 22 per cent per month under 35 and falls with advancing age and duration of trying. With the average age of having a first baby in Australia just over 30 many women are literally starting on the back foot. So where does IVF fit in with our current knowledge and understanding of infertility factors? IVF is the process whereby 8-12 daily injections of the hormone FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone) are administered to women to make multiple eggs develop in her ovaries. This process is monitored

with blood tests and ultrasounds and a second series of injections is administered to prevent ovulation until egg collection is planned. Egg collection takes place under ultrasound guidance to aspirate each of the follicles which have developed to retrieve the egg inside. This is mostly performed under general anaesthesia but can also be done under sedation. The retrieved eggs are then fertilised either by sperm positioned near them or by injection (ICSI) if a male factor is present and then incubated for 24 hours. After 24 hours, a fertilisation check is performed under a microscope by an embryologist. Eggs which have fertilised become embryos and these are then continuously incubated for 2-5 days after which an embryo transfer into the uterine cavity is performed which will hopefully result in a pregnancy. One of the latest technological advances in IVF involves culturing the embryos in an environment where the growth and cell division is recorded by sequential photography. The instrument, called an Embryoscope ®, allows scientists to observe embryo development without removing them repeatedly from the highly regulated environment where they are growing. Research is now telling us that embryos which grow in a normal pattern with correctly timed cell divisions are more likely to implant successfully and achieve higher live birth outcomes. The chance of a successful outcome depends on multiple factors, including the age of the eggs, quality and genetic integrity of the embryos and the uterine environment into which they are transferred. Hormonal support for the uterine (endometrial) lining is provided in the form of progesterone. Some progesterone is made by the cells lining the egg follicle but these cells may be disrupted by the egg retrieval process so

The chance of a successful outcome depends on multiple factors including the age of the eggs, quality and genetic integrity of the embryos and the uterine environment into which they are transferred.

additional support by pessaries, tablets and/ or injections may be required. So, who needs IVF? Couples where there is a major male factor need IVF to collect eggs and inject sperm where the normal spermegg interactions are unreliable or don’t occur. Men who have had vasectomies or failed reversals need sperm aspirated directly from the testes and these sperm must be injected into the eggs to fertilise them. Women with blocked or removed fallopian tubes need IVF as the sperm and eggs can’t meet naturally. Women who have endometriosis, adenomyosis, reduced ovarian reserve (low AMH levels) or unexplained infertility often need IVF if natural conception or ovulation induction-intrauterine insemination strategies are unsuccessful.

Newer drugs to stimulate ovarian follicular development are continually emerging. Embryology technologies to analyse and monitor embryo development and assess genetic integrity are constantly being evaluated and refined. The technique of Vitrification where embryos which are surplus in a given cycle or are being genetically analysed are rapidly frozen and cryopreserved for future use in subsequent cycles has been a major breakthrough. We now expect 95 per cent of embryos frozen at the Blastocyst stage to survive the freeze-thaw process without damage. Despite our best intentions and technology there is no guarantee any couple will achieve a successful pregnancy from IVF. There are certainly disorders which challenge us more than others. Age remains our biggest challenge as society trends to more career focus and delaying reproduction. Therapies, natural and prescribed, have almost universally been disappointing in the challenge to improve egg quality in older women and those with low reserves. Egg freezing in the early 30s gives some degree of reproductive insurance, but it is still expensive and intrusive and not always a guarantee of future success; though, it is certainly superior to the challenges of achieving pregnancy with advancing reproductive age.

Are you a bad influence? JEFF OSBORNE FROM VISION PERSONAL TRAINING BUNDALL GETS US THINKING ABOUT SETTING A GOOD EXAMPLE FOR OUR FAMILY

hen it comes to health, we generally grow up to adopt the habits and behaviours of our parents. There is something in us humans that makes us regress to the middle when it comes to most habits. Hang out with people that drink, and you will drink more. Hang out with a group of smokers and the likelihood that you become a smoker goes through the roof. It’s little wonder that when children grow up in a household with one overweight parent, they are much more likely to grow up overweight. A 2017 study in the Journal of Clinical Research in Paediatric Endocrinology found boys were 2.79 times, and girls 3.46 times, more likely to be overweight. It’s hard being healthy these days; we don’t need any more of a handicap. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not concerned if you are in shape or not - I am only concerned about people’s health. The health implications of being overweight are grave and they affect not only life longevity but also health longevity, emotional wellbeing and the effects of being obese affect generations. For your own sake and that of your children and their children, you must step up and lead by example! How does leading by example look? We all have many things going on in our lives. Work, relationships, stress, commitments and often your health and that of your family take a back seat. It is much easier to eat poorly and neglect exercise in the short term. Until you make it a priority in your life change will be hard to come by and at best temporary. If you have been making poor food choices for you and your family, turning it around is definitely much harder, but it is possible. For starters you need to lead by example for a few months! Don’t expect to force change on kids straight away; they will resist! If they have a taste for crappy food, they will want it and try every weapon in their arsenal to get it! Tantrums, screaming, food strike, everything! The first step is for you to change; they will get curious and start to ask questions. Then you can educate them on why you are doing what you are doing and eventually they will begin to make better decisions. So, what leads to good outcomes?

“it’s not just about weight loss,

Let's have a look at the habits: Food planning and preparation Every weekend, take some time to plan out what you are going to eat each meal for the week. Plan to get a good serve of protein in each meal, cut down on low nutrient carbs and make dinner a colourful salad or veggies with a big serve of protein each night. My favourite thing to do is cook up the protein, put it on a plate in the middle with a big salad and let everyone pick at what they want. Make exercise a daily habit Even just taking a walk in the evening with the whole family rather than watching TV will have a significant impact. Maybe it doesn’t burn a ton of calories, but it sends the message that exercise matters. We all know that if you don’t have enough energy doing some exercise is the best way to increase that! Every weekend find some things to do that force you to get active. The kids might complain at first, but they will go on to value the time together. Get interested in health Go out of your way to watch and read things about health. There is so much valuable info available on health and fitness. I know some of it can be contradictory and confusing, but if you keep learning and discussing rather than taking everyone at their word you will start to learn more. Load your social media with some interesting and informative people, watch some documentaries on health and before you believe it all look up online what people think of the info presented.Taking the time to learn more puts it at the forefront of your mind and will make you and your family a healthier and happier bunch! You will be so glad you did. Step one: jump on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter and find us! Vision Personal Training Bundall, if you message me directly, I will point you in the direction of some great resources and tips to get you started.

it’s about health” Happy Mother's Day! For the month of May, Let us help you find the best version of YOU!

GET IT I MONEY

YOUR FAMILY’S

GOLDEN FUTURE In the spirit of Mother’s Day, Les McGuire ADFS(FP), Principal of Future Proof Financial, shows you how to better invest in your family’s future appy Mother’s Day edition! As a special surprise, I have a treat for all the amazing mums, soon-to-be mums, and those thinking of becoming mums out there. We know how you love to look after your family, so I want to provide some tips for alternatives to saving money, for you and your family’s future. Investing money for your family’s future seems like a massive hill to climb. "How can we further understand and teach our kids to better respect money?" By teaching them encouraging ways to save, and doing this to assist them in the future. If you are planning to have a family there is so much to consider, and planning can take away many of the unnecessary pressures. Remember the days when we were young, oblivious to the world around us? Most of us as children had a bank account set up where we put our savings, pocket money and that five dollars nan and pop gave us for Christmas and birthdays. I challenge this strategy! Some alternatives can make long-term savings, for both our children and us, far more enriched. When we consider long-term investing, there are many options available. I want to educate you all on a strategy available today, which has made a resurgence recently. With the right structure and product, the alternatives are attractive to help meet long-term investment goals sooner. May 2019

“Most of us as children had a bank account set up where we put our savings, pocket money and that five dollars nan and pop gave us for Christmas and Birthdays. I challenge this strategy!” Have you heard of insurance and investment bonds? With the right structure/ product these are not like the conventional bonds we all have heard of before. Imagine being able to access an investment which after ten years is 100 per cent tax paid, an investment vehicle that has no ongoing individual external tax treatment to worry about while invested. Imagine also a product which has internal tax paid rates typically at 30 per cent, however, with the right options as low as 10 per cent. Are you getting excited yet? Finally, imagine being able to invest still in market-linked investments, such as specialist managed funds to allow (with the right advice) the money to grow more than money in a bank account. What if there was a way to invest for our children's education, their first home deposit, our dreams, including holidays, retirement? Well, the list goes on. 40

When investing in investment/insurance bonds, you can invest an initial amount in the first 12 months of opening the account. Each following year make regular contributions up to 125 per cent of the previous year's contribution. For example, if you were to start with an initial investment of $5,000 with regular contributions of $200 per month, the total contributions for the ten years will be $28,838. In 10 years, at an expected growth rate of 6 per cent totalling $12,453, the bonds withdrawal value (at 100 per cent tax-free) would be $41,291. With the right investment structure, and ongoing compounding of the investment, after ten years the money withdrawn at the end is tax-free. How rewarding is that? The other benefit to this strategy is the money isn’t locked away. If withdrawing money was required, this could happen without penalty using the right product. With the right structure, there are some great alternative ways to save money, and to start building your nest egg for a brighter future. The important thing to remember before making any financial decisions is that you should seek advice to ensure any guidance is appropriate to best suit your personal needs. As always keep smiling, be happy, and if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to let me know (les@futureproof.com.au). With great advice, you can change your life.

Handling precious people in the

workplace

e’ve all met them. The overly emotional colleague who is all too easily offended and overacts to the smallest of issue. The hyper critical colleague who finds fault in everything. People who argue points simply to prove themselves right. Those who personalise every issue, constantly complain and become upset when things don’t go their way. These people can be exhausting and sap us of vital energy. The ability to respond with emotional intelligence and constructive behaviour is a reasonable expectation to have of anyone in the workplace. Holding people accountable to thinking and behaving in ways that enable success is both fair and necessary. Creating a workplace environment in which the best possible outcomes are achieved through open, healthy, robust debate depends on it. Whether you’re the precious person’s manager or colleague, there are steps you can take to have a positive influence on their thinking and behaviour. While there is no magic wand, honest feedback delivered with respect and sensitivity is essential. ‘Holding the mirror up’ can go a long way toward waking people up to the influence they are having on their own happiness and success. Have empathy and listen to understand Typically, sensitive people need to feel heard and understood. Having empathy and listening is critical to earning their trust and in turn influencing their behaviour. Begin by furthering your understanding of not only what they feel but why. Understanding people will better enable you to earn their trust and ultimately influence their approach. Ask questions that will help you to gain insight to the beliefs

Dealing with colleagues can be difficult, Karen Gately, leadership and people-management specialist, author of The People Manager’s Toolkit: A Practical guide to getting the best from people, and a founder of Ryan Gately, teaches us how

and assumptions fuelling their concerns or motivating their behaviours. Have compassion but remain objective. Set boundaries Reflect on the hypersensitive people in your life. How much time and energy do you spend on people who never seem to follow through to fix the issues they complain about? Do you find yourself listening to the concerns of people who seem determined to believe in a pessimistic view of their world? If allowed to, precious people will drain us of energy to fuel their seemingly never-ending need for negativity and drama. It’s up to you to protect your energy reserves, by limiting the time and attention you give them. Don’t fall into the trap of fixing ‘drama queen’ problems for them. They will draw on your talents and energy for as long as you allow them to. Set clear boundaries about the conversations you will or won’t engage in. Excuse yourself from negative discussions about other people, pointless issues or over dramatized points of view. Set an example of professionalism and emotional intelligence and people are less likely to share their dramas with you. Have expectations Healthy workplace cultures require that we listen to, care for and support our colleagues to cope with the challenges they encounter at work. Begin by expecting people, with respect and consideration, to take responsibility for how they feel and impact others around them. Be proactive and pre-empt how certain people on your team may react in various circumstances. This is especially important as you work to drive changes through your team or organisation. Give ample warning of change, 41

allay fears before they grow and invite people to contribute their ideas to avoid outcomes that worry them. Have tough love conversations Engage in honest conversations with people about the impacts of their behaviour on you, others and their own reality. Be upfront while at the same time sensitive in your approach. Understand the influence you will have is in part dependant on the depth of trust in your relationship. Encourage people to speak about any concerns before they become blown out of proportion. Challenge people to choose to think differently when unfounded beliefs and assumptions fuel their concerns. Help people to see alternative perspective and options they can choose to focus on or believe in. Respectfully challenge exaggerated reactions, so they set those reactions aside to enable a meaningful and productive conversation. Help people to understand that the way they are choosing to feel is undermining their judgement and ultimately their ability to succeed. Be empathetic while at the same time encouraging people to choose more productive thoughts and emotions. Reach decisions you feel are appropriate and be prepared to explain your reasoning if questioned. Shut down repeated complaints that have already been responded to. Give positive feedback Typically, sensitive people need validation from their peers to feel confident in their work and relationships. Building confidence and a strong sense of belonging are essential; so too is reinforcing productive emotions and behaviours, while challenging those that are not. May 2019

In a large bowl coat the chopped sweet potato in coconut oil and salt and pepper. Lay sweet potato onto prepared baking trays, be careful not to overlap too much. Place into oven for 20 minutes. Check, turn and cook for a further 15 minutes. While the chips cook, prepare the other salad stuff. Serve pork inside lettuce leaves, top with tomato, onion, cucumber and a dollop of natural yoghurt and a side of chippies!

About an hour before the beef is ready preheat the oven to 180°C and line 2 baking trays with baking paper. In a large bowl add the sweet potato slices, coconut oil, paprika and a little salt and pepper.

Merrymaker tip...

Stir well to coat the potato in spices and oil. Lay the sweet potato slices onto the baking trays and bake for about 25 minutes, turn and bake for another 10 minutes or until nice and crunchy.

If you eat corn chips swap the sweet potato for natural corn chips. Oh and cheese is always a good idea if your stomach likes it!

While the chips cook, place all ingredients for the cashew cheese into a food processor or blender. Whiz until super dooper smooth. Place a layer of chips, top with beef, tomatoes, onion, avocado, cashew cheese and fresh coriander.

DELISH STUFFED EGGPLANTS Oh, these babies are going to please. We love stuffing food in other food, makes it fancy and oh so fun! SERVES: 4 PREP TIME: 25 mins COOK TIME: 40 mins STUFF YOU NEED 500 g beef mince

Merrymaker tip...

100 g baby spinach 100 g parmesan cheese grated (optional)

If you love cheese (yes please), take the eggplants out of the oven at 25 minutes, spoon in the beef and sprinkle with cheese. Return to the oven for another 5 minutes. YUM! And yes, we totally did this!

4 small or 2 large eggplants 3 tomatoes chopped 1 onion diced 1 clove garlic crushed 1/4 cup pine nuts 3 tbs. fresh parsley 1 tbs. macadamia oil 2 tsp. cumin 1 tsp. cinnamon coconut oil salt and pepper NOW WHAT Preheat oven to 180°C and line 1 baking tray with baking paper. Slice the eggplants in half lengthways. Scoop out flesh of the eggplant, leaving about 2 cm (1 inch) edge of flesh around all sides of the eggplant. Be sure not to go too deep and make a hole! Don’t chuck the flesh, chop it all up and set aside. Sprinkle eggplants with salt and drizzle with macadamia oil, place on the baking tray and put into oven for 30 minutes, or until eggplants are soft. While the eggplants cook get onto the beef! In a large fry pan heat a little coconut oil on medium, add the onion and sauté for about 2 minutes. Add the garlic, tomato, eggplant flesh, spices and continue to stir for 5 minutes. Turn the heat up a little and add the beef mince, cook for about 5 minutes or until cooked through. Stir through the spinach, fresh parsley and season with salt and pepper. Fill your cooked eggplants with delicious beef, sprinkle with pine nuts and a little extra parsley.

GET IT I DATING

In honour of Mother’s Day Get it’s dating expert Linda Prescott, from Ideal Introductions, shares heart-warming advice on how single mothers can find love again et’s face it, getting back out into the dating world after spending some time solo can feel scary. Even just the thought of sitting at dinner with a new stranger might make you cringe slightly. Why wouldn’t you? You’re probably thinking, ‘What if he doesn’t find mums attractive?’, ‘What if the kids don’t like him?’ Okay, stop there. Before you get ahead of yourself, it’s important to know that, yes, love does happen again.

Deborah’s story

Looking to meet a life partner, Deborah Cox, 52, tried online dating tools but found they weren’t working and she “wasn’t getting any younger”,she turned to matchmaking. “Yes, I had doubts in the beginning,” Deborah revealed,“But my matchmaker was always a phone call away. I was given lots of advice along the way and I had some great dates with lovely guys.” When Ideal Introductions matched Deborah with Brian, now 53, she said she knew quite early on that he was special. “Brian walked me to my car after our first date on the Friday, which he scored huge brownie points for. We arranged to meet again on the Sunday for breakfast which flowed into the afternoon again,” Deborah recalls. From that first date in 2011, the couple were married in 2013. And the beautiful part? Deborah’s two sons gave her away at the wedding. “The rest is history. We have six kids between us, so we now have a huge family with two grandkids as well. My matchmaker even came to our wedding ceremony,” Deborah said.

May 2019

finding love again My Tips on Finding Love the Second Time Around Be proactive about meeting people While you don’t want to become obsessed in your search for a partner, you do have to make sure you are doing things that increase your chances of meeting someone. Just like you would put in an effort to land your dream job. Think about it, it’s the person you’re going to potentially spend your life with – now, that definitely requires some thought if you’re going to have a happy and fulfilled life. Change your mindset The key is to approach each opportunity with an open mind, heart and neutral expectations. In other words, go with the flow. Some things will work out and others will not, it’s all part and parcel with dating (and love) and the sooner you accept and adopt this attitude the sooner you will be able to see it all as a much more enjoyable and exciting journey. “Brian wasn't my usual ‘type’,” admitted Deborah. But she kept an open mind and after taking the time to get to know each other, both Deborah and Brian discovered that they were compatible. “That first meeting turned into a drink nearby, then dinner and then dancing,” said Deborah. The next thing she knew, she was walking down the aisle again. When it comes to finding love, go out and enjoy life, meet new people, be open to love and above all, embrace every opportunity. Don’t care too much If you make this mistake, you’ll scare some really good dates away. You’re essentially broadcasting the silent message,“I am seeking your approval. I don’t already know that I’m a cool, interesting person deserving of love. I need you to validate that I’m worthy of love.” The most attractive people on dates are the ones who are willing to take just a bit of a chance in conversation. Don’t be too concerned about what the other person is thinking of you, because you’ll be less likely to use your sense-of-humour or flirt. Let go of your date-pleasing habits, it’s time to switch your thought processes. Know what you’re bringing to the table I always tell our clients, know your worth and be ready to talk about yourself confidently. You know you’re awesome and anyone would be lucky to have you, so you need to be prepared to talk about why. It’s quite common to get so wrapped up in focussing on what the perfect partner is like, that we forget to think about why someone would be lucky to have us. What are you bringing to the table that will attract your ideal match? 46

Astrology in the workplace:

the good, the bad and the ugly thebrujamix.com @thebrujamix

Sarah Murphy, creator of The Bruja Mix and Melbourne based astrologer and tarot reader, teaches us the signs when it comes to astrology in the workplace

he workplace is a minefield of people, personalities, positions and roles. Work, like death and taxes, is inevitable. As we spend so many hours with our co-workers, they can become like a surrogate family. We don’t get much of a say on who these people are, but what we can do is understand our co-workers from an astrological perspective. Every astrological sign has its high vibe and its low vibe manifestation, its own

little mini cheat sheet. From this we can deduce when they are being good, bad or plain ugly! The aim of this is to allow you to know when to appreciate your co-workers for their natural ‘je ne sais quoi’ or when to just ‘walk away’ from any potential work place drama. This is an inside guide into how to navigate the work place when things get a little weird! So here it is: sun signs in the world place!
