The passing of the buck

Letter from Nicole

As someone who’s lived life as a single mum, I know firsthand the importance of financial literacy and financial independence.

Having a thorough understanding of your financial circumstances and direct access to your finances is critical to a women’s ability to leave an unhealthy relationship, and survive the aftermath.

Financial literacy isn’t about being wealthy – although knowing how to grow your wealth is important – but more about access and knowledge. How much money do you have, can you access it, and do you know what to do with it to make it work for you.

It’s something I’m incredibly passionate about.

And this month, Get it Magazine is all about financial literacy and financial independence.

But it’s not just about surviving, it’s also about thriving.

That’s why we’re looking at how to invest when you’ve never invested before, and how to keep your marriage healthy when one of you is overspending.

We also show you some simple ways to save, without realising you’re doing it, because let’s face it, with the cost of living the way it is, saving seems like a pipe dream!

For those of you who are money savvy, we know you’re planning your Christmas getaway already, and we have the perfect suggestions in our regular travel section.

And we look at the risks associated with the ever-alluring buynow-pay-later options that make those “just because” splurges hard to resist.

Best of all, this mag is free, so grab a copy, make your own coffee and enjoy!

Gather around, children, and let me tell you a tale from the ‘olden days’.

When I was a kid, I had a bank account, and this account had a ‘passbook’. A ‘passbook’ was a little book about the size of a passport in which the bank teller would handwrite any deposits or withdrawals and record the balance of your account. If I needed to pay for something, I would go to the bank and withdraw the cash! Sometime in about mid-high school, I got a key card! This meant that I could go to an ATM and withdraw cash (without having to go into the bank) or pay for something at the shop using just this little piece of plastic. I’m not a Luddite, but when tap pay became a thing, I decided I was never going to use it, and why, oh why, would I need to link my card to my phone?

How wrong I was. Today at the shops, I emitted a little irritated sigh because I had to actually insert my card into the machine, and the transaction took about 1.65 seconds longer than it usually would. When I went for a walk, I used to stash ‘coffee cash’ in my sports bra; now I just need my phone.

There is, however, one thing on which I’m standing firm. No afterpay for me. I do this crazy thing called ‘beforepay," where I don’t buy something unless I have the money for it then and there. I did, however, used to love lay-by, but no one seems to do that any more.

The government has recently announced that "pay later’ companies will now be regulated as ‘credit companies" and not ‘financial management tools." About bloody time. I have friends who have found themselves unable to pay for essentials because their "pay later’ payments have priority, and this leaves them way short. I am in no way blaming people who have found themselves in this sort of bind. It is so ridiculously easy to set these accounts up, and shop assistants seem genuinely surprised that you are not going to afterpay for your purchase. It’s EOFY, and every man and his dog (especially if the man is called Harvey and his dog is called Norman) is having a sale on flat-screen TVs. Resist! Viva la revolution!

Let’s encourage some frugality (you all know how much I love op-shopping!). Hold your potential purchase in your hand; will it bring you joy? For more than five minutes? Contemplative consumption is the new black. Actually, it will keep you in the black!

ʽbuypaynowlaterʼ

Living it Up with While the Risks Sneak Under the Radar

Hold onto your wallets, because 'buy now pay later' (BNPL) services are taking Australia by storm! It's the ultimate shopping convenience, allowing us to indulge in our retail desires without breaking the bank... or so we think. Did you know that these nifty platforms experienced a whopping 4.5% revenue boost in FY22-23 alone? With over 158,000 Aussie businesses jumping on the BNPL bandwagon, it's no wonder that a whopping 59% of us have given it a whirl. But here's the kicker: a whole bunch of us are clueless about the hidden dangers lurking in the shadows of BNPL.

The Illusion of Safety

Picture this: nearly half of Aussies (47% to be exact) think that BNPL providers have to play by the same rules as those big, ol' banks. Well, turns out that's about as accurate as thinking you'll stumble upon a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. 38% of respondents incorrectly believe that missing a BNPL payment will not have any adverse effects on their credit score. The reality, however, is that BNPL services do possess the authority to report repeated missed payments to credit reporting bureaus, potentially damaging one's creditworthiness.

DISHING THE SCOOP: Money.com.au's Survey Shenanigans:

These insights were derived from a comprehensive survey conducted by Money.com.au, a leading finance platform committed to providing innovative solutions for consumer and business loans. The survey engaged 1005 Australians from various backgrounds, unveiling intriguing trends and perceptions surrounding BNPL usage.

YOUTHFUL ENTHUSIASM: The Driving Force behind BNPL Adoption:

Here's a not-so-surprising revelation: young Aussies are going crazy for BNPL. Among 18-to-30-year-olds, a staggering 77% admitted to utilizing at least one BNPL provider for their purchases, surpassing their older counterparts. Comparatively, 69% of 31-to-50-year-olds and 39% of individuals over 50 reported having experimented with BNPL services.

BNPL NATION: Where Do We Stand?

Guess what? The BNPL obsession isn't limited to just one state. It's spreading like wildfire across the whole country! Western Australia and New South Wales are tied for the top spot, with a jaw-dropping 61% of their residents admitting to hopping on the BNPL train. But they're not alone in this wild ride—56% of Victorians and Queenslanders, as well as 55% of South Australians, are proudly rocking their BNPL splurges too.

THE GENERATION GAP: Younger Users Unaware of Consequences:

While the younger generation is more inclined to embrace BNPL credit lines, but, here's the twist: they're also the ones most in the dark about the consequences. Within the 18–30 age group, a staggering 28% do not consider BNPL as a form of credit. Additionally, a significant proportion incorrectly believes that untimely payments will not incur charges (12%) and that missing payments will not impact their credit score (44%).

The 'buy now pay later' phenomenon has taken Australia by storm, captivating consumers with its convenience and flexibility. However, as the survey reveals, a significant portion of Australians remains unaware of the potential risks involved. But don't let your guard down just yet. Educate yourself about the potential risks and pitfalls lurking in the BNPL landscape. By understanding the intricate details and exercising caution, Australians can navigate the BNPL landscape wisely, ensuring a secure financial future.

Understanding the connection between money and mental health for women

When we talk about women and financial health, it's tied to events more commonly associated with women in relationships: moments like getting married, starting a family, or saving for a child's education. As a society, we don't foster conversations about women becoming independent financial managers for the long haul.

Why?

Because financial health is strongly linked to mental health. If you're worried or stressed about money, have no financial plan, or aren't sure if your financial needs will be met, your mental health will be negatively affected.

If we are to empower women – unmarried, divorced, or widowed –regarding mental health, that includes facilitating their financial health and confidence.

Research shows that there is a strong link between financial stress and mental health problems, such as anxiety and depression. Since women are already overrepresented in diagnoses of depression and anxiety compared to their male counterparts, the need for better financial services is key for female mental health. Vulnerability is a key component to these mental health issues and fear is so often the underpinning of many of these. Women are also still raised not to talk about money, or to view personal finance as a taboo topic.

Over the years, I have observed these pressures magnified in mid-life women, when both financial and role demands peak for many people.

Beyond mid-life, financial stressors may be amplified for women. Trying to save for a personal milestone such as retirement is difficult enough in a dual-income household and can be much harder for women who are single, divorced or widowed.

Research has shown that women may see money differently than men. Studies show that women are more likely to use money in a helpful way (e.g., a child’s education, philanthropy, retirement) as opposed to accruing money for its own sake, compared to men. This can be particularly troubling for widowed women. Many women who experience the loss of a spouse find themselves in the difficult situation of becoming financially independent for the first time in their lives, without the experience, confidence or money culture that allows them to ask questions, talk about money and become comfortable in their new financial role.

Talking more openly and frequently about the financial health of all women and helping prepare them for financial singledom is a key component of empowering women to achieve better financial health.

Young adults who experienced adverse circumstances in childhood or come from poor families demonstrate greater financial and mental vulnerability. Adverse financial strain in childhood can lead to reduced mental health in adulthood. A similar relationship between long-term financial strain and health has also been observed among older adults, specifically, perceived long-term financial strains over the life-course were significantly related to some health-related outcomes in later life, such as depressive symptoms, and functional impairment.

So, your ‘money’ health is something we all need to address – start by seeing your accountant, a financial advisor or chat to a trusted friend. At the end of the day, it is encumbered upon each of us to put in place measures and strategies, to ensure our financial security, not only in youth, but for the remainder of our lives.

Injectables FOR TENSION HEADACHES & JAW CLENCHING?

While anti-wrinkle or muscle-relaxant injectables are commonly known for their cosmetic applications, what many people don’t know is that muscle relaxant injectables can be used for relieving symptoms of certain types of tension headaches and jaw clenching pain, says Dr Jeremy Chou, founder of Dr J Aesthetics.

Why we get Tension Headaches & Jaw pain

Many people tend to subconsciously frown their brows or clench their jaw when focusing intently on their work or when they frequently have to manage rowdy kids (or adults). There are also those who subconsciously grind their teeth and clench their jaw while they sleep. When they do so for long periods of time, the muscles involved can start to become hyperactive, tense, and bulky, which can then lead to tension pain along their frown area, jaw, or temples. The temple muscles get involved because they are slightly connected to our clenching muscles so can contract at the same time when you clench.

How does muscle Relaxant Injectables Work

By injecting muscle relaxants into the offending muscles responsible for triggering headaches and jaw clenching, we can help relax the tension and overactivity of these muscles to reduce the frequency and intensity of symptoms. As such this non-invasive approach offers a nice alternative option for providing relatively quick and prolonged relief without taking daily medications or using cumbersome treatment options. As an added bonus, treating these areas can also aesthetically slim your jawline and reduce frown lines!

How long does it last?

Generally speaking, the effects will last approximately 3 months depending on individual health characteristics, lifestyle factors, dose, frequency of treatment, and how long you've received regular treatments. Some may notice the benefits can last up to 4 to 6 months if they have been receiving regular injections at least 3 or 4 times. This is because if you treat the problem muscles regularly at the beginning, they will gradually shrink, which often allows you to extend the time between treatments or drop the dose of each treatment.

Over the last few years, there has been a significant change in the landscape of work in Australia. We have seen a migration to working from home models, and we have experienced a mass exodus of people leaving successful, corporate jobs, into new more soul-led ventures.

Much of this was unheard of years ago. So, what happened?

The world stopped seemingly overnight, causing us to ask ourselves questions we hadn’t asked before: Am I really happy working in a cubicle for the rest of my life? Am I really satisfied with the career I am in?

People have started realising that there is more to life than the hamster wheel they have been stuck on. That there’s actually some choice in how we run our lives. We have more options that we’ve ever had. And we’ve had time to think about whether what we have been doing is really serving us.

It also gave us the chance to think about whether, if we keep going down this track that we’re on, is it really going to lead us to purpose, success and fulfilment? Or have we been operating in a paradigm of success that isn’t even ours?

From an early stage, the people around us ask us what we want to be when we’re older. Then, as we go through school, well-meaning adults advise us to get good grades, go to university, get a “real” job and climb the corporate ladder.

Of course, that model has worked well and continues to work well for many. But not everyone.

For some, our conditioning and best intentions has led us into careers that don’t allow us to bring our authentic selves to work, or our creativity, or our genius. We get stuck in our zones of competence or excellence, and can get no further. For many, this will suffice. But for some, good is the enemy of great, and our hunger for greatness drives us towards more.

Finding our zone of genius or ikigai (as the Japanese call it), is the work that lights up our soul. It’s the work that feels like play, brings out our genius, our authenticity and our creativity. It is something unique to us. And it is something we can only find when we’re brave enough to ask ourselves the question: what is my unique essence and how can I bring that out into the world?

Sometimes it helps to look at our life in reverse and ask, if I was on my death bed, how would I have wished to live? What would I wish I had done?

The trick is to do those things while we can, and to never stop following the spark we had when we were first asked the question, what would you like to be when you grow up?

Taking Action Against Plastic Pollution: Easy

Switches for a Greener Lifestyle

1 Transition to biodegradable toothbrushes, toothpaste, and tubes

Did you know that the world’s daily dental routine generates over 32 billion pieces of plastic waste each year? Plastic toothbrushes and toothpaste tubes clog landfills and pollute rivers and oceans, releasing harmful microplastics that take up to 1000 years to break down.

With World Environment Day approaching, the global focus is on beating plastic pollution. Plastic waste is pervasive, from the highest peaks to the deepest seas, accounting for a staggering 85% of marine debris and releasing trillions of microplastics. While the problem may seem daunting, there is reason for hope: each one of us can make a difference.

In our pursuit of practical solutions, we spoke with the creators of SmidgeCo, an Australian business offering biodegradable, compostable, and recyclable dental products to combat the 32 billion plastic toothbrushes and toothpaste tubes that end up in landfills each year.

According to Shannon Nixon, cofounder, "positive change doesn’t require radical shifts in your daily routine. Collectively, small changes in the kitchen, bathroom, and laundry can have a huge impact on the planet".

2 Embrace metal pegs for your clothesline.

Unlike their plastic counterparts, metal pegs have a longer lifespan, making them both environmentally friendly and cost-effective. Plastic pegs become brittle over time, break apart, and contribute to the growing microplastic problem. Australia alone has an estimated 120 million pegs in use, most of which end up in landfills or rivers. On the other hand, metal pegs can be recycled once they reach the end of their lifespan.

3 Opt for refillable handwash and bodywash products.

Each year, more than 150 million plastic containers of bodywash, handwash, and deodorant are discarded, with only a mere 15% being recycled in Australia. Many of these plastics find their way into landfills, rivers, or the ocean. Look for refillable options like Leif, whose shower gels come in pouches that can be sent back for refilling.

4 Make the switch to reusable water bottles and consider Soda Stream or Zip Water for sparkling water.

Australians purchase a staggering 15 billion plastic water bottles annually. Producing each litre of bottled water requires three litres of water and 250 ml of oil, placing a significant strain on the environment. By simply carrying a reusable water bottle, you can help combat the 130,000 metric tonnes of plastic waste that end up in Australia’s rivers and oceans each year, all while saving money. For those who enjoy sparkling water, investing in a Soda Stream or Zip water system offers the perfect solution, reducing plastic consumption even further.

5 Choose compostable alternatives for kitchen essentials.

While many single-use plastic bags have been banned across the country, plastic bin liners still linger. These bags often find their way into landfills and the environment, causing harm to wildlife. Some can take up to 300 years to break down, and birds and turtles mistake them for food. Fortunately, sustainable alternatives exist. Consider swapping your regular bin liners, zip-lock bags, cling wrap, and baking paper for compostable or biodegradable options. This simple switch allows you to maintain your routine while making a significant environmental impact.

By implementing these easy switches into your daily routine, you can actively contribute to the fight against plastic pollution. Together, let’s protect our precious ecosystems and preserve the beauty of our planet for generations to come.

Love & Money: How to Tackle Overspending in a Partnership

It’s no secret that the cost of living continues to impact Australians, with half of us struggling to meet our essential expenses.

GET IT I LIFESTYLE GET IT June 2023 16

So, how do you manage if you’re one of the 26 per cent who also live with a partner who overspends?

We speak to Financial Advisor and Money spokesperson Helen Baker to get the download on money challenges in relationships and tackling overspending head on.

Why do you think 1 in 4 Aussies who are struggling to meet their expenses are also experiencing a partner who tends to overspend – does stress and spending go hand-in-hand in tough times?

It comes back to their values and often their upbringing. It is said that from seven years old we have our association with money formed in our minds. So, if we come from a background of struggle, we can often go crazy with money and overspend when we have it.

For some, when stressed or frustrated, retail therapy can be a kick that makes you feel better for a moment. But then you have to continue to find that hit. People respond to stress in different ways – eating, working out, and for some, it’s spending.

Can you talk about the age breakdown and what over spenders are tending to purchase between age brackets?

A lot of the older age group understand that tough times come – so they can be less likely to overspend than someone younger who is used to having higher incomes and easy credit, and low interest rates. Overs penders link back to values of what they didn’t have as children, what impresses others, or just what makes them happy –their purchases can range from jewellery and shiny things and fast cars, or it might be as simple as regular visits to Kmart!

How can we tackle the transition from low interest rates to needing to spend less, without feeling as though we’re missing out?

If you have an old budget, go back and revisit what you spent three years ago and compare – have you changed your lifestyle and that is where extra spend is coming from? Or, is it just purely the increase in costs? Try to work out what is really important to you and what is not important to you and reset your budget. I like to have three options – an absolute basic one to get by until things change, a medium one that is a reasonable way to live, and then the “living your best life” budget to live according to what is happening at the time.

How do you recommend couples tackle this kind of sensitive financial conversation, especially if the “blame” is falling on one party?

I think it’s about sitting down and playing a game of “would you prefer?” Would you prefer to spend more now, or pay more off the home? Buy that furniture, or a holiday? Would you prefer to spend now or have the choice to retire? Or to put kids through private school? It’s about getting on the same page.

Most couples will have a different approach to spending based on upbringing so discussing is good. You may like to bring in a financial coach or counsellor so neither of you is seen to be attacking the other – let the coach be the one to bring it together.

The main thing is to tie yourselves into a goal that makes you decide together to target something. You can also separate out an amount each that you both get to spend on unchecked, so people can spend on what they want as long as it still means they are managing their other money well.

When do you recommend opening a joint account?

I believe it depends on the duration of the relationship. At the start best to keep things separate. As time goes on, you may put money into a joint account and still keep some money separate. When you have been together a long time and you feel you share the same values you might tie it all in together.

Do you find there’s more of a tendency to “hide” overspending?

Generally it is unknown. In some cases, it can be a surprise to the overs pender how much they are actually spending. With that can often come shame, guilt and fear, so you have to be careful (that it doesn’t become) a cycle of overspending to deal with that confrontation of spending. Gambling is a big one because they often think they will put that money back when they “win”! Transparency is key.

What other general advice do you have for someone who tends to overspend in a relationship but isn’t sure how to tackle bringing their outgoings down?

Don’t put your head in the sand or nothing will change. If you can see what is going on, and more importantly what is driving the behaviour, this will help you find your freedom. If you find it too hard to look at on your own, or you are unmotivated, or scared, then get a financial coach or counsellor involved and let them gently work through it all with you. It doesn’t necessarily mean you can never spend again, but it is about being in control of money so you don’t get down the track and realise you should have done things differently. As a coach says “it’s never about the money”; something else is always driving the behaviour.

GET IT I LIFESTYLE GET IT June 2023 17
“A LOT OF THE OLDER AGE GROUP UNDERSTAND THAT TOUGH TIMES COME – SO THEY CAN BE LESS LIKELY TO OVERSPEND THAN SOMEONE YOUNGER WHO IS USED TO HAVING HIGHER INCOMES AND EASY CREDIT, AND LOW INTEREST RATES.”

A luxury lifestyle for the over-50s

The Palm Lake Resort team has designed their most opulent and prestigious over-50s community to date. During the planning process, one thing became abundantly clear: modern over-50s will not settle for an outdated 'retirement' approach to living. Their diaries are full, and they prioritise their health and wellness.

The team of designers at Palm Lake Resort, who have more than 45 years of experience in the building of lifestyle communities, are aware that older homeowners are more likely to 'right-size' their houses than to downsize. These houses must have high-end furnishings and equipment that require little

maintenance. They ought to have enough room for close relatives and friends as well as the recreational pursuits that make these years worthwhile. For this reason, Palm Lake Resort has everything you need to live life to the fullest.

The Sonora dining and social precinct at Palm Lake Resort is a vibrant hub for residents to enjoy various activities and socialise. It includes a dance floor and a stage, providing a venue for lively events and entertainment. The precinct also features a commercial kitchen, ensuring that culinary delights are prepared to perfection. For those looking to unwind and savour breathtaking views, there is a fully licenced rooftop bar and a dining hall with water views, creating a delightful ambience for shared meals.

Tell us about midlife styling, do you find this can be an age where women need to realign with their style vision or find their style identity again?

Absolutely. This is also now me too –that stage of wanting to look ageless. Embracing our wisdom, not wanting to look 20 or even 30 but also not older than we are either.

Embracing Style in Midlife & Beyond VISIBLE IS THE NEW BLACK

My view and approach to fashion and styling is much more holistic – I am often asked ‘what do we need for the season?’ or ‘what are you must haves?’ or something along those lines. I don’t believe in sweeping statements like that. As women, we are multidimensional. Our identities are a tangle of connections to activities, places, interests, values & aspirations. We are so wonderfully diverse. So how can the ‘must have little black dress’ look amazing on all shapes, sizes and colourings?

Personal styling expert Jane Vandermeer and founder of Finesse Your Style is on a stylish mission, empowering women to discover (or rediscover) their personal brand through fashion. Get It Magazine’s Holly Bartter speaks to Jane to learn the tips and tricks to styling success, visibility as we age and embracing our midlife wardrobes.

Your niche is professional women – do you find women in this space can dedicate themselves so much to their work, families and other commitments that they forget to nurture their personal image and brand?

Oh absolutely! It’s one of the reasons why I love working with women in this space. We innately give so much of ourselves to others, whether that is our careers, partners or families. We put ourselves last or lower down the list. One day we come up for air and wonder who we are, possibly still doing our makeup in the same way that we did when we were younger (or purchasing ‘the same’ outfits each year). We lose our sense of fun and experimentation, we play it safe, almost robotic. I find it is at this point that women know they need help but aren’t sure where to start.

GET IT I PROFILE GET IT June 2023 20

What does the phrase “visibility is the new black” mean to you? Can you share a little about how you work that into your business?

I observed long ago that women are often brilliant at their craft, their professions, they can be at the top of their industries however deep down there was still an undercurrent of challenging self talk about themselves and their bodies. Many I have met and still meet struggle with being visible. They would rather stay behind the scenes and play it safe. In styling terms, I call it ‘wearing beige’ Not because beige can’t be gorgeous but because they want to fade into the background and not draw attention to themselves.

As someone who is now embracing midlife, I feel passionate about playing a role in inspiring others to do the same. I wanted to challenge stereotypes about midlife women, and instead of being a part of the problem, I chose to become a part of the solution by developing a personal styling business that would empower midlife women to become highly visible.

How important is personal brand for our business and the impression we make on the world?

Very! Our screens are our shop windows. If we each had a bricks and mortar shop, we would carefully curate our shops with visual merchandising. Well our screens, our personal presentation and body language is our shop window – we are also a constant walking advertisement for our businesses.

So, every time we are visible we are representing our businesses. How many times have you popped onto an online call with someone who looks nothing like their picture? For a minute you think that you are in a meeting with the wrong person!

The other thing to consider is, as business owners we are always being watched, particularly online – you never know who might be looking in.

Can you share a client styling success story?

One beautiful client who comes to mind is a lady I will call Sally – Sally came to me by referral, and she’s in the midlife age bracket. When I met Sally, she would barely make eye contact with me, she was sitting quite hunched. Her body language was saying ‘I’m not owning or taking up space’.

However the biggest thing that I could see and feel with her was her lack of confidence.

The magic is giving women the tools they need to understand their bodies and shape. These skills are life skills that we are never taught! By the end of the program,

Sally had the confidence to find a beautiful dress, jacket and jewellery that was completely out of her comfort zone. She also “took up space, owned her space” on screen, and she had a sense of self assurance and an inner glow.

Sally’s weight hadn’t changed, but her focus and sense of self had. She was really shining brightly. The world was completely optimistic again! She was also full of ideas, telling me “Jane, I have had multiple business ideas. I am ready. I have made things happen!”

What are your top 3 pieces of advice to a woman in midlife who is struggling to find her style compass, especially when there are more places to shop than ever before?

• Carve out some time to invest in yourself – gather knowledge rather than a ‘quick fix’.

• Invest in some help – find someone who you align with.

• Invest wisely – some of my very favourite pieces in my wardrobe I have had for many, many years.

Ready to Invest?

Our Guide to Maximising Your Money

The investment world can seem like an endless maze, so we’re sitting down with Certified Financial Planner Daniel Rickard to learn how to navigate investing as a beginner. From getting started to trendy saving tech, get savvy on the new investment opportunities to maximise your money and make informed choices.

Investing can seem like a daunting concept, so how do we get started?

As a beginner, the best first step is to educate yourself about the basics of investing. Start by reading books and articles or listening to podcasts. The next step would be to establish a budget and set aside a portion of your income specifically for investing.

Understanding your risk tolerance and time horizon when starting out with investing

is crucial to building a well-balanced portfolio that aligns with your financial goals. By gauging your comfort level with potential losses and the time you have before needing to access your investments, you can create a strategy that optimises returns while minimizing undue risk, ensuring a more secure and successful investment journey. A pre-constructed multi-asset portfolio that aligns with your risk tolerance and time horizon might be a good place to start as you continue to build your investing knowledge.

GET IT I EXPERT GET IT June 2023 22

Is cash still king, or do you recommend broadening our investments?

While cash is an important part of any investment portfolio, it's essential to diversify your investments to minimise risk and maximise potential returns. Real cash rates are still negative – if your savings account is paying 4% p.a. while the most recent inflation data is 7 per cent per annum, you are actually losing 3 per cent per annum. By investing in a diversified portfolio of stocks, bonds, credit, real estate and cash, that is aligned to your risk profile you may be in a better position for long-term financial success.

With interest rates rising, it can be a challenge for many to consider finding more pockets of money to invest – any advice here?

In the face of rising interest rates, it's crucial to prioritise and optimise your spending habits. Focus on reducing unnecessary expenses and paying down any high-interest debt. You then need to prioritise savings for investing over other, often more fun expenses. This is hard in any environment, but the current cost of living crunch we are facing makes it even more challenging – start by aiming for a savings goal of 10 per cent of after-tax income and go from there.

Are you seeing any recent investment trends?

There have been several trends that have improved the landscape for new investors, making the world of investing more accessible than ever before. The reduction in fees for various investment platforms and products has significantly lowered the barrier to entry, allowing new investors to participate without heavy financial burdens. Improving technology and user-friendly interfaces have simplified the investment process, making it easier for beginners to navigate and manage their portfolios.

Micro-investing platforms have emerged as popular options for those with limited funds, enabling individuals to invest small amounts and gradually build their wealth. Furthermore, the wealth of information available through online resources, blogs, and financial podcasts has empowered beginners with the knowledge they need to make informed investment decisions and grow their financial assets. While these trends offer potential opportunities, it's crucial for beginners to understand the risks involved and consider their personal financial goals before diving in.

Is there a minimum sum of money someone would need to start investing with? We see apps that round up change from your purchases to start investing, what are your thoughts on this kind of tech?

There is no specific minimum sum required to start investing. However, it's important to consider the fees and costs associated with various investment options.

Fees can add up when investing small amounts but there have been new technology solutions to this problem. Micro-investing apps that round up change can be a great way for beginners to start investing, as they allow for low-cost entry and encourage regular contributions. Micro Investing Apps such as Raiz Invest, Spaceship Voyager, CommSec Pocket and Pearler are all worth consideration. Don’t get me wrong, there’s no chance that a 70-cent roundup from your recent Woolies purchase is ever going to grow into an amount that will influence your retirement. However, these apps do a great job of increasing familiarity with investing, forcing savings and boosting confidence so that in the future people are more comfortable investing.

Maintaining Motivation on your health and fitness journey

Maintaining motivation on your health and fitness journey

Losing weight can be a challenging process when you don't have the right support and guidance. We often hear "I can't stay motivated". Now, true motivation ebbs and flows; it will never be constant. That's why utilising strategies to maintain momentum on your way to achieving your goals can be really helpful.

Here are some strategies to help you maintain your motivation on your weight loss journey.

1.

Set Specific and Realistic Goals:

Start by setting clear, specific, and achievable weight loss goals. Avoid vague goals like "losing weight" and instead set targets like "losing 10 kg in 2 months." Having specific goals gives you something concrete to work towards and helps you track your progress, which can boost your motivation.

2. Find Your "Why":

Understanding your personal reasons for wanting to lose weight can be a powerful motivator. Reflect on why you want to lose weight and how it will improve your life. Your "why" could be to improve your health, boost your self-confidence, or be more active with your kids.

3. Break it down:

Losing a significant amount of weight can feel overwhelming. Break your weight loss goal into smaller, more manageable milestones. Here at Vision, we make sure your goals are both realistic and sustainable. Celebrate each milestone along the way, such as losing 5 kilograms or fitting into a smaller clothing size. This helps you stay motivated by giving you a sense of accomplishment and progress.

4. Surround yourself with support.

Having a support system can make a big difference in staying motivated. Share your weight loss goals with friends, family, or a supportive community. Surrounding yourself with people who encourage and support your weight loss journey can help you stay accountable and motivated.

Track Your Progress: Seeing your progress over time can be motivating and help you stay on track. Celebrate your successes and learn from any setbacks to keep moving forwards. With our complimentary MyVision app, it will show you just how far you’ve come! It tracks your body weight in graph format, which makes your results something to be truly proud of!

5. Reward Yourself:

Treat yourself when you achieve your weight loss milestones. However, be careful not to use food as a reward, as it can create an unhealthy relationship with food. Instead, choose non-food rewards, such as buying yourself new workout gear, treating yourself to a spa day, or taking a day off to relax. Rewards can help reinforce positive behaviours and keep you motivated.

One Pan Maple, Butternut Pumpkin and Pancetta Pasta

Prep time 10 minutes

Cook time 40 minutes

Serves 4

Ingredients:

• 1/2 butternut pumpkin

• 4 rosemary sprigs, leaves picked

• 2 garlic cloves, peeled and finely sliced

• 8 slices pancetta, finely sliced

• 1 tbsp olive oil

• 1/2 tsp chilli flakes

• ¼ tsp ground cinnamon

• 2 tbsp pure Canadian maple syrup (preferably amber syrup for its rich taste)

• 4 cups vegetable stock

• 250g dried pasta

• 60g parmesan, finely grated

• Salt and pepper, to season

Method:

1. Carefully remove the skin from the squash and cut into 2cm chunks. Roughly chop the rosemary leaves

2. Place a large saucepan or casserole (big enough to fit all the ingredients) on a medium – low heat and add a good drizzle of olive oil

3. Fry the pancetta and garlic for a couple of minutes until just golden then stir in the chopped rosemary leaves, butternut squash, chilli flakes and cinnamon

4. Fry for 4 – 5 minutes, until the squash is a little golden. Drizzle over the maple, fry for a couple more minutes till sticky and pour over the stock. Bring to the boil, then turn the heat down a little and simmer for 3 minutes

5. When the squash feels about half cooked stir in the pasta. The stock should just cover the pasta, but if not add a splash more boiling water

6. Season generously, reduce the heat and cover the pan. Cook for a further 8 – 10 minutes – you want the pasta to be al dente so check the packet instructions

7. When it is ready, remove the lid, turn up the heat and continue to cook for a minute or two to reduce the stock – it shouldn’t be soupy, but still a little wet, the pasta will absorb this as it cools

8. Add most of the parmesan and more black pepper. Taste and tweak the seasoning

9. Wait for 2 – 3 minutes to absorb more of the liquid off of the heat and give it a few more stirs, until silky and glossy. Then serve with the remaining parmesan over the top

saving made simple:

More Ways to Build Your Bank Balance

Creating positive saving habits isn’t always easy, but John Liston, Chairman of Liston Newton Advisory here on the GC, is here to ‘save’ the day with some effortless hacks and tricks. John also shares with us some methods to stay motivated on our saving journey and finding the right balance to suit our lifestyles.

What are some easy ways to save outside of the traditional methods we often hear about?

Over the years, I’ve found that the easiest way to save is to “pay yourself first”. If you set up an automatic direct debit into your savings account for a certain amount, so as soon as you receive your paycheck it gets taken away, you will effortlessly adjust your spendings.

I also suggest doing a budget first with all the expenses that you have and that you want to have (entertainment, clothes, dinners, wine) and confirm how much you are comfortable spending. Then I usually reduce this amount by a 20 per cent margin (to give me a bit of leeway) and that is the amount that I automatically direct debit out of my cheque account into my investment account.

Can we still splurge on the little things in life, or is it really about giving up that latte and avocado toast?

I don’t think you will stick to something if you are being forced to do it – you have to enjoy it. I personally enjoy looking at

my investment account once a month and seeing it go up (hopefully!). Then, the coffees I didn’t drink and the wines I didn’t have made it all worth it.

Nevertheless, I do like going out for dinner several times per week, as a lifestyle choice. I think it's important to create a wishful budget and include all the lifestyle expenses that you wish to have. In addition, you can also be smart and find opportunities to save on cash.

I also suggest people use some of their free time to find side hustles and increase their income capacity. This tends to be a winning formula as less leisure time usually translates into less expenses and hopefully the project is successful, and we end up with a bit of extra income. I’ve seen many times how people who listen to this advice, end up quitting their job and dedicating 100 per cent of their time to something they find more enjoyable.

How should we go about setting realistic savings goals?

First, be clear on your income. If it's complex (investment properties, business income at different points in time, ad hoc expenses), a financial adviser can assist you in defining this. Then, budget for your fixed expenses and your desired lifestyle.

Everyone is having to tighten their spending at the moment, do you have advice to keep motivated in saving even when it can feel a little dull?

I'm a big believer that “growth” is the biggest motivator for humans. In tough times, I suggest clients to focus on improvements, no matter how miniscule they are. Tracking

how much their debt facilities have reduced in recent times, how their superannuation accounts have increased due to recent contributions, it all helps. Every dollar counts, and once you can appreciate consistency, not effort, you will find the required motivation you need to keep going.

Is the "envelope stuffing" method or "piggy bank" style saving still worthwhile even for small deposits here and there?

Sure! Better than nothing. And if you are able to “stuff” more than $4k per year, it will put you above the median of individual savings in Australia

How are you approaching your client saving strategies currently, and how have they changed since interest rates rose?

We continuously review their spendings budget. As per cost of living increases and wages remain flat, the savings capacity reduces. In high inflationary times, we also tend to suggest clients to direct most or some of their surplus towards things that will improve their cash flows.
