LETTER FROM

Nicole Editor Baby it’s cold outside! We’re only at the beginning of Winter, but the season has got off to a chilly start on the Gold Coast, probably thanks to all the wet weather sweeping through the country. I can’t say I’m complaining though. I love summer, but with Queensland essentially having three seasons of hot weather, by the time winter rolls around, I’m well and truly ready to pull out my boots and coats. Winter gives us an excuse to live life a little differently. Add a sprinkle (or a storm) of rain, and you’ve got sure-fire permission to keep your jammies on, and spend your Sundays snuggled up in bed, armed with a cup of tea and the television remote. The rain has brought the added bonus of cancelled community sport (shhh, don’t tell the kids!), meaning no morning rush, and no freezing my toes off as I try to spot my child because I’ve forgotten my glasses again. The first day of winter is also my birthday. I’m officially ‘in my forties’ having hit the milestone in 2021.

OPEN 7 DAYS | 9:30AM TO 5PM 32 Masthead Way, The Marine Village, Sanctuary Cove • Ph 5577 8981

And doesn’t it show? I’ve spent the better part of this column talking about the weather. We had some friends over the other night, and while we enjoyed a high-quality platter and some good champagne, the first hour of conversation covered our sore backs, hips and penchant for afternoon naps. Birthdays are a funny thing as you get older. The calendar tells me I’m an adult. Adulting should be easy! But life tells another story. It’s not easy, it’s damn hard. I sill feel like I’m playing house each time I make dinner for the kids, or sit down to offer them some worldly advice (usually done after asking my own mum first). One thing that does come with age though? You stop caring about what other people think, you own your life – and your time. It’s empowering. And so is this month’s issue of Get it Mag as we celebrate empowered women. So, grab a copy, and a blanket, and enjoy!

GET IT I PROFILE

Giving A Voice to Those

Who Need It Founder and CEO of Laronix, a Queensland-based startup, Dr Farzaneh Ahmadi shares with us her breakthrough in voice box design that’s changing the lives of patients. 1. Can you tell us what your new Bionic Voice device does? Bionic Voice substitutes and regenerates the missing “voice source” for laryngectomees (someone who has had their larynx removed). It is naturally controlled by respiration and has an exceptionally high voice quality. The Voice is generated by a smart algorithm and can be trained in its future generation to reach a voice quality resembling the patient’s own. It’s different to the standard of care in the market in that it’s non-invasive, and provides

GET IT June 2022

a much better quality and natural-sounding human voice than the current gold-standard (which often sounds unnatural and hoarse).

4. How has the feedback been so far from patients who have been able to test this product?

2. Historically, who might need to utilise a voice box at some point in their life?

We’ve had some of our patients test out the device and come back with positive feedback. In particular, we had one of our patients be able to speak over the phone for the first time in 7 years using the device! It is truly rewarding to be able to see this and these experiences are the reason that helps keep us going. We are continuously receiving feedback from our patients and what we can do to improve our voice box.

They are required by people who need to remove their larynx due to larynx cancer this procedure is known as a laryngectomy, as well Parkinson’s patients. With our Bionic Voice, a world first smart wearable electronic voice prosthesis, the user group is widened to virtually anyone else who has difficulty with speech or a bad voice.

3. What’s your favourite part about the work that you do? Being a CEO of a start-up is not a smooth and easy journey, but my favourite part about my work is seeing patients being able to use the device and speak, and for those moments where they can sing happy birthday to their loved ones and family.

10

5. When can we expect to see this product available for sale and use? We are currently working on the Laronix Bionic Voice and finalising when the device will be available publicly to the market. We are continuing to use and test the device with our patients and would love to be able to release the Laronix Voice-box sometime this year, however, we don’t have an exact date of release to share just yet - stay tuned.

Is ‘empowerment’ a privilege of entitlement?

WHAT YOU’LL GET:

It’s very hard to be a ‘boss queen’ if you are working twelve hours a day to support your family. It’s difficult to ‘embrace your goddess power’ if you’re so tired from looking after little people you can barely keep your eyes open. It’s hard to be an empowered minority when you just can’t see yourself in the majority. I also want to vomit every-time Kim Kardashian is described as a powerful self-made woman.

• A link to our latest online magazine and special digitalonly features • Immediate and exclusive entry into all our competitions • Be the first to know about special offers and discounts.

Do we as a society define a woman’s power by looking at her instagram followers or her waist to hip ratio? I want to be judged on what I do, not how I look. I want to grow into my own power not wait for someone to give it to me. I also want the rain to stop, and the bloody toilet roll holder to refill itself- but I am a realist. I think too much of our patriarchal society sets women against each other. We judge our friends, the women on the street and ourselves with some pretty unrealistic standards. The rule of ‘divide and conquer’ has well and truly been applied to the half of the population lucky enough to be rid of the pesky Y chromosome. We need to enable each other. We need to see the power and the beauty and the passion and to encourage it. We need to support our friends, and the woman on the street and ourselves. We need to judge on deeds and words not acrylic nails and hair extensions. Men achieve jobs and opportunities because of the archaic ‘old boy network’. Let us build and foster an ‘old girl network.’ I am old(er), and a girl, who’s with me!! (There may be a clubhouse and a secret password if you’re lucky). Look for opportunities for other people and tell them about them. No (wo)man is an island.

The way to power and entitlement is through passionate cooperation not competition. Women make up well over half of the population and things will change when we, like those amazing early 20th century suffragettes and the completely remarkable Grace Tame, find our voices and speak our truths.

GET IT I LIFESTYLE

The Power of Women’s Circles Championing women’s circles here on the GC, Tash HilebrandLockie shares with us the importance of coming together, sharing and finding community in new ways post-pandemic. 1. What is a women’s circle? Women’s circles are really very simple - it’s a group of women sitting around in a circle and sharing and connecting. But they are powerful because the nature of the circle and the principles they are based on allow us to drop our social defenses and truly connect, with each other and also with ourselves. This experience can be deeply nourishing for many women.

2. How did you start working in this industry? I started running and offering women’s circles back in 2016 after attending my very first women’s circle and loving the experience. It felt like something I’d been missing my whole life and I hadn’t even realised it! I was deeply craving this kind of connection with other women in such a real way. Not long after, I signed up to a women’s circle facilitation training course and cocreated a monthly women’s circle (that’s still going strong over five years later!).

3. What’s the history behind women’s circles? Sitting in a circle is a practice that Indigenous women have been doing for millennia - they know the power of coming together in a circle and sharing from the heart, to share wisdom and to learn from each other. Along the way in our busy GET IT June 2022

modern times, we’ve lost this ancient practice - but now it is returning.

4. For someone keen to attend but feeling unsure - what can they expect from attending a women’s circle? Women’s circles can be very varied - they can include meditation, sound healing, sharing around a topic or an open topic, reflection time - it all depends on the facilitator. I offer sharing circles in particular, and my role as the facilitator is to ensure that everyone who attends feels safe and comfortable, and also to provide a good structure for the circle. The most important thing to know for anyone coming along to a women’s sharing circle is that there is no obligation to share at a sharing circle if they don’t wish to - it’s their presence that is the most important thing.

5. We lost so much genuine, in-person connection across the pandemic, do you feel women need more of this now more than ever? Yes absolutely! If there was one good thing that came out of the pandemic, it is that it has made us value and appreciate the importance of connection more! Zoom calls are one thing, but they’ll never replace the power of in-person connection.

6. Why do you think the Gold Coast is responding so positively to these circles? I think Gold Coast people are as a general rule open, friendly and health-conscious, so it makes sense to me that there would be a natural interest in spaces like women’s circles. I also think many people are starting to look for ways to connect and socialise

14

beyond the traditional drinking and partying scenes, and circles offer a great alternative for this.

7. How important is it to have dedicated women-only spaces? I believe it’s very important - for both men and women. Most of our lives are “co-ed”, and so I believe it’s important to carve out time for things like women’s circles (and men’s circles) so we can share more openly and honestly about things we are genuinely feeling and experiencing, without having to censor ourselves (either consciously or unconsciously).

8. Where would you like to see your work evolve to in 5 years time? I would love to continue to be involved in the mainstreaming of women’s circles. I dream of the day that attending a monthly women’s circle is as normal and mainstream a thing for women to do as going to the gym or a Pilates class.

my music is just the beginning While many artists struggled to stay on track during the pandemic, singer-songwriter Suzy J found her moment to step into the spotlight. Today, Suzy sits down with Get It Magazine’s Holly Bartter to talk purpose, knowing yourself and growing her US fan base.

16

For Suzy Jamieson (or Suzy J as she’s known in the industry), the path to a career in music felt like destiny. “I was singing the moment I could speak!” she tells me. “My love for music was instant and it was infectious. Singing is all I ever wanted to do as a career so yes I guess I always knew I’d end up in this space. To me, music isn’t really something you choose but more of a calling.” Suzy, a “true born and bred Melbourne girl”, describes her music style as being “at the crossroads between country and pop”, an interesting genre that’s already inspiring fans around the world. “I grew up listening to pop stars like Kylie Minogue, Belinda Carlisle, The Bangles, and Madonna, so vocally I am very pop orientated,” she explains. “More recently however, as I’ve gotten into songwriting, I have really fallen in love with country music and the way it really enables you to tell a story. I guess my style has tried to marry the two - catchy pop with a country heart!” With the US being the home of country music, Suzy is about to fly over to Nashville to record another album. There, she’s found a second home for her work, and a new audience that’s celebrating her talent. “In the Christmas just gone, I released my

song ‘All I Really Want For Christmas Is You’. I felt it was just what the world needed after such a tough few years of the pandemic. It was upbeat and fun and it really resonated with people here in Australia - and particularly in the USA,” Suzy shares.

support me and buy one.”

“I was fortunate enough to be on some billboards in cities like Nashville, Dallas and Denver too which was a real thrill. I just wish I could have seen it myself as that would have felt very special.”

Making her own way in a notoriously competitive industry to break into, Suzy has grown to trust herself and her instincts when it comes to her vision and work, she explains, “I think at this stage in my life, my sense of purpose is strong. I finally know who I am and I am really comfortable in my own skin. I am not looking for anyone’s approval and am singing and writing from my heart.

During lockdown, Suzy took advantage of a unique but challenging situation, releasing both an album and a Non Fungible Token (NFT).

“It’s so important to take the time to find your sound and your words. Once you know this it will help you not be swayed by others’ opinions of who and what you should be.”

“It forced me to think outside the square and try things I hadn’t done before. With Melbourne in complete shut down, I ended up connecting with talented Nashville producer Ben Reno to help bring my album to life. I had always wanted to go to Nashville so this was the next best thing. Amazing really to think that my music was made with the help of people on the other side of the world and so much easier than I had imagined which just goes to show how important it is to keep agile and move with the changing times.

With her rise to fame clearly charted, Suzy is looking forward to a future that includes more global impact, travel, and of course, plenty of new music.

“As an indie artist, I felt this NFT concept could provide a way for me to connect with fans anywhere around the world. I created a collection of unique covers of my debut album 262 and have listed them on Opensea and marketplace. My hope is that people will

“I love connecting with people through my music and I think those who see me perform get that. I think all of those things keep me true to my vision.”

17

“I’m excited for the year ahead,” she tells me. “I have my first single, ‘I’ll Show You Love’ out now which is getting great reviews. I am also going to finally travel to Nashville which will be a real bucket list trip, but my own music is just the beginning! In five years’ time I want to be touring here and in the USA and songwriting for other artists too.

The Practical Guide toInjectables While increasingly popular, antiwrinkle and filler injectables still have a level of stigma and misinformation surrounding them. So, for the average woman, what can we expect? We chat to Cosmetique CEO Dr Vivek Eranki to dispel some myths and get the low-down on all things injectables. 1. Could you give us a career snapshot of yourself? I graduated from the University of Adelaide with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery in 2008. Following completion of this basic and General Medical training, I underwent further post-graduate training and hold formal qualifications in Cosmetic Medicine and Surgery including Fellowship from Australian College of Cosmetic Surgery and Medicine, Fellowship from the Korean College of Cosmetic Surgery and an Associate Fellowship of American Society of Cosmetic Breast Surgery (just to name a few!). In the field of Cosmetic Medicine and Surgery, I am also a preceptor (which means a trainer) for the Australasian College of Cosmetic Surgery and Medicine and Aesthetic & Skin Institute respectively.

2. What are the most common procedures Gold Coast women are looking for? GET IT June 2022

The most common procedure in the Gold Coast is lip fillers. At Cosmetique, we perform, on average, over 3000 treatments per month. In Gold Coast, the vast majority of patients prefer a highly defined and voluminous aesthetic and following this wrinkle relaxing treatments are the second most common procedure.

3. Can you share with us a bit about the bonus impact of getting injectables? The vast majority of patients get wrinkle relaxers to help soften the dynamic lines on their face and fillers to either replenish depleted volume or to add volume for aesthetic purposes. Further to these intended purposes, treatment with wrinkle relaxer and fillers have other benefits too. Wrinkle relaxer, for example, reduces oil, sebum and sweat production in the skin. Wrinkle relaxer can also be used to manage headaches and teeth/jaw clenching and grinding. The key ingredient in fillers is Hyaluronic Acid (HA). HA is very hydrophilic, which means it improves the hydration in the treated area.

4. What are some of the biggest myths you see amongst the injectables industry? There are several myths, most of them arise from poor training of nurses in injectables. First, is that wrinkle relaxer and fillers are addictive and dangerous. They are some of the most reviewed agents in medical literature. Not only are they NOT addictive, 20

Dr Vivek Erank

but their safety profile also ranks as one of the best (i.e., one of the safest agents available). The second is that wrinkle relaxer and fillers look fake - the end aesthetic result is dictated by the patient and not the treatment - it can be as subtle and natural or as pronounced as the patient’s desire. Finally, the idea that fillers and wrinkle relaxers are painful - at Cosmetique, lip fillers are performed under a nerve block. This means, they are very well tolerated, and most patients do not experience any pain after the nerve block has been administered. Wrinkle relaxers are injected through a 31-gauge needle, which is less painful than a mosquito bite.

5. What is the most common reaction you get from first-timers once they see results? Most patients, after lip fillers, say ‘wow’. Whilst patients are aware of what lip fillers look like, seeing it for the first time on themselves typically elicits a ‘wow’ response.

The

experience HOLLY’S STORY

“I’d always been curious to try a wrinkle relaxer “brow lift” as well as lip filler - being someone who takes really good care of my skin (sunscreen and a daily retinoid!), I loved the idea of a little extra “freshness” to my face. My intention was always to look natural and not be eyeballed or questioned by friends and family - cosmetic enhancements are a very personal choice but I knew I wanted to err on the side of caution. Stepping inside Cosmetique in Robina for the first time certainly presented a level of the ‘unknown’ - is this going to be painful? What if I don’t like the results? Thankfully, my consultation call with Dr Eranki was sitting front of mind, where he’d reassured me that the result of injectables is really down to the individual and their personal aesthetic goal - in short, you won’t look frozen or puffy or unlike yourself, just a little more refreshed and enhanced. My anti-wrinkle “brow lift” treatment came first, and yes, it did sting - but I also recognise that needles come with some level of sensation involved. Think several stings around your forehead and crow’s feet area. Wrinkle relaxers generally kick in about a week after (as in, you start to get restricted movement) and that was right on schedule for me - I can still express myself but not in an overly pronounced way, and I love the look and feel. As the name suggests, my brows are lifted but not

in a “permanently surprised” expression - subtle is key here, and clearly Dr Eranki understands exactly how to achieve it.

for a short period of time (and even a slight “lumpy” feeling is normal as the filler melts in where it needs to be) but this all goes away.

For lip filler, we went for 1ml in total which was recommended to me by Dr Eranki as enough to have a subtle change to the definition of my lips which started at a good base size and volume (now, if you have smaller or thin lips, the amount injected will vary for you!).

I really love the results and it was absolutely right for me - my lips feel totally normal and functional but just a little more defined, and I’ve had not one person question if I’ve had anything done.

Dr Eranki and his assistant performed a nerve block so aside from feeling a bit heavy (like after the dentist), it wasn’t really painful but I could feel the injections happening - it was odd, and immediately after I felt and looked clearly swollen, tender, pink and puffy. This was all, as I was told, totally normal! But for anyone taking hold of the mirror post-filler, beware that you won’t be seeing the end result. My bruising came up over the next few hours and was obvious, so definitely schedule your filler for a long weekend at least when you can have some down time. Importantly, I didn’t overdo it those next few days - no working out, saunas etc. By day 3 my swelling was essentially gone, and by day 5, so was my bruising (and with a little lipstick you really couldn’t notice a thing). Now that I’m well over a week out from my own session with Dr Eranki, my injectables are feeling “settled in”, and I can safely say the word that captures it all is: patience! Swelling can make your lips look outrageous

21

Ultimately, this session taught me that an injectables experience doesn’t have to be painful or stressful, and everything can be customised to what YOU want to achieve after all, it’s your face, so you call the shots.

HOLLY’S TOP 3 TAKEAWAYS: • “Be patient and don’t rush the healing process. Prepare by taking the right supplements like arnica in the lead up and during healing, and avoid blood thinning medications and fish oil.” • “Communicate with your injector bring photos, articulate the look you’re after clearly, and go slow - you can always add more later.” • “Take someone with you that you trust - I took my (very supportive) partner along and it made all the difference having him there (even having someone to drive you home after when you’re feeling a little fragile!).”

Sweet vs Dry: How to tell what you really like when it comes to wine There is little more satisfying than impressing friends and family over extensive knowledge of wines. But being a connoisseur does have its challenges, especially for those who are just starting! So, how does one truly find out what they really like when it comes to wine? When people try wine for the first time, they are usually given a dry white, and for many, this isn’t a taste they enjoy, bringing them to the premature conclusion they’re not a ‘wine drinker’. The problem here most likely isn’t the wine, it’s just that you haven’t found the wine style you like yet.

until you find yourself at the next chapter, like a Brown Brothers Origins Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio. Never stick to one style for too long, it will take a lot of trialling before you discover your favourite varieties. Finally, an understated piece of advice to finding the wines you really like is to try pairing it with food; it will highlight tastes and flavours that you have never considered before! Always ensure the wine you choose won’t overpower the food, but rather complement it on texture, weight and flavour. For example, when eating a spicy dish, try pairing it with a sweet Brown Brothers Moscato and feel the wine

If you want to start drinking and understanding wine, experiment and taste all different types and not just your everyday white. A beginner-friendly wine like Brown Brothers Moscato, is the perfect entry point as it is lower in alcohol and has some leftover natural grape sugar which makes it sweeter in taste. You can also try other varieties like Brown Brothers Moscato Rosé or Sparkling Moscato for a little something extra during those special occasions. To find your preferred varietal, you must taste, taste, taste! Visit cellar doors whenever you can and try as many different varieties, of all taste profiles, as you can. At the end of the day, like discovering anything enjoyable in life, finding your personal taste in wine is a journey. Start with something approachable like moscato, and keep going GET IT June 2022

tame the spicy heat whilst retaining their fruit aromatics. Wine and food pairing is also about taking yourself on a flavour adventure. See what combinations work for you. Running to Keep

Kids Safe Launched in 2013, the Bravehearts 777 Marathon is back again this year, so Get It Magazine speaks with Bravehearts CEO Alison Geale to learn about the important work her organisation does to protect children, and how we can play a part in supporting their mission. 1. Can you share with us what the focus of Bravehearts is? Bravehearts is a leading Australian child protection organisation with a mission to provide a coordinated and holistic approach to the prevention and treatment of child sexual abuse. Bravehearts is dedicated to creating a world where people, communities and systems all work together to protect children from sexual abuse. Operating for over 25 years, we provide industry-leading child protection training and education programs, specialist child sexual abuse counselling and support services, as well as engaging in research and lobbying to help support and protect against child sexual abuse.

2. Child sexual abuse is a topic that often goes unspoken about because it’s such a hard subject to tackle what are some important facts our readers should be aware of?

With approximately 1 in 5 children experiencing child sexual abuse, Bravehearts’ education programs such as Ditto’s Keep Safe Adventure Show and ProjectYou! are vital in continuing to safeguard the futures of Australian children. In up to 90 per cent of child sexual abuse cases the offender is known to the family, so this requires specialist counselling and wrap around services for both the child and the non-offending family members. It is critical to educate both children and adults in recognising the signs early. Helping to build resilience and decrease vulnerability in all children is a key component in prevention.

3. Tell us about the marathon event coming up. The Bravehearts 777 marathon sees national runners take on a gruelling endurance challenge by running seven consecutive marathons, held across seven states, over seven days. This year we’ll be kicking off in Perth on Monday, 27 June, and work our way through Adelaide, Melbourne, Launceston, Sydney, and Canberra, before culminating on the Gold Coast on Sunday, July 3. It’s a huge physical and mental challenge for our national runners and their dedication to months of training to be able to participate and raise much-needed funds for Bravehearts is truly incredible. 23

4. Where does the Gold Coast fit in, and how can GC locals get involved and show their support? Bravehearts is headquartered on the Gold Coast and is proud to be a part of the Gold Coast community, delivering important services to Gold Coast children. Locals can register to attend the Gold Coast leg of the Bravehearts 777 Marathon by jumping on our website.

5. How can we be aware of potential abuse that our young loved ones may be experiencing - what are some signs, and what do we do if we spot them? It is important that parents or carers assist in the prevention of child sexual abuse is to begin discussions about personal safety and safety online with children as early as possible. Ditto’s Keep Safe Adventure Show has been delivering these messages to children aged 2- 8 since 2006. It can be a tricky space to navigate for parents and carers, so Bravehearts has a downloadable Parent Pack that can assist with how to have these conversations and some important information on what to do. As you drive into the pebbled entryway of Mt Warning Estate, kookaburras line the telegraph wires, your very own noisy welcoming committee to your stay in the cabins, nestled into the hillside. Our place for the night, Cabin 1, is a perfectly proportioned hideaway, built for two (although it can sleep four). There’s an outdoor day bed, firepit, BBQ and indoor fireplace, flanked by comfortable leather sofas – so no matter the weather, you’ll have your choice of flames to gaze into. The owners have designed the perfect getaway for those seeking a romantic break – the tiniest details are thought of, from morning croissants with local jam, to a well-stocked cupboard of essential condiments and dry goods, leaving you with nothing to think about, other than which fireplace to relax by. All you have to do is bring the romance. Light your chosen fireplace then head to the real star of the show: the outdoor bathtub. Privately screened, it’s the ideal afternoon spot to watch the sunset over Mollumbin through the rising steam and bubbles (the cabin is stocked with eco-friendly body wash and bubble bath for use). The Benefits of Resistance Training for Weight Loss for Women

One of the most common questions from women when they begin their program with us is “will weights make me bulky?” or “will I look like a man if I do weights?”.

be a caloric overload to allow the muscles ample fuel to actually grow in structure and size.

In fact, weight training can bring about massive benefits, not just in terms of weight loss, but overall health and vitality.

Weight training is ideal for women as it really can assist to make lasting results easier. Your overall muscle mass attributes to about 60 per cent of your resting metabolism (the energy you naturally burn at rest) so if by doing weight training you can build your overall muscle mass which then builds the resting metabolism.

Women will never gain significant muscle mass when training the right way. Firstly, women simply do not produce the same hormonal output of testosterone and growth hormone as their male counterparts to stimulate muscle hypertrophy. Secondly, when the goal is to lose fat, the nutritional requirements are set to different standards compared to someone who is looking to gain muscle mass. When trying to lose weight, there is a need to have a slight caloric deficit to ensure the body utilises its fat storage as a fuel source, when the goal is muscle gain there needs to

GET IT June 2022

Thirdly, 2-3 half hour weight sessions is too low a frequency and volume to allow for massive muscle growth.

This can mean potentially it can be easier to lose fat as the body will naturally burn more energy every day. Weight training can assist in shaping and toning your body. When losing weight through diet alone, weight will be lost but overall body fat percentage and shape will stay fairly similar, just a smaller version of it. By doing weights combined with adequate nutrition, the body shape will actually 32

change and give a more athletic, toned physique. When doing weight training as opposed to just diet aesthetics are not the only real benefit. Studies suggest weight training can help with bone mineral density as putting the joints and bones under increased tension will only assist in keeping them healthy and strong. Weight training has been found to assist in the reduction of type 2 diabetes, increasing insulin sensitivity. If you want to be fit, healthy and strong whilst enjoying the weight loss process, then don’t be afraid to step into the weights area! *Disclaimer: Individual results vary based on agreed goals.
