from Nicole

It’s July! Can you believe it? When June comes around, I’m often grateful for the cooler weather. The chance to put on some jeans, boots, and a stylish coat.

By July though, the cold is getting a little tiresome. Especially when you’re faced with two weeks of school holidays.

Winter school holidays aren’t filled with trips to the beach or the local water park. It’s up to parents to orchestrate the fun.

And when you’ve got tweens and teens, that challenge is even greater. When you have newborn babies, there’s no shortage of well-meaning parents advising you that the worst will be behind you soon. The hard part is almost over.

I beg to differ.

For mine, the tween and teen years are much harder, with challenges that can’t always be fixed with a hug or a soft word. Those things help, no doubt, but they don’t always solve the problem. Not for your children, and not for you.

Adding to the complexity is the lack of community support. Where are all the teen parenting pages to remind us that our challenges are normal? That we’re doing ok?

If you know of any, I’d love to hear about them!

But parenting older children is a joy too, a mixed bag of struggle and immense reward, as you watch them grow and change and develop.

I come from a blended family, and we have five children between us. They’re a mixed group. Within the group, we have neurodiversity, academic strength, academic struggle, sporting prowess, a home body, introversion, extroversion, boisterousness, placidness, intense passion, major chill, hyperactivity and calm. The full spectrum of personalities and character traits.

We have five amazing and wildly different children. Some face more challenges than others, no doubt.

Parenting is an exercise in true, unconditional love. It’s loving fiercely and equally, despite imperfections. Or, as I’ve come to realise lately, parenting is a deep understanding that there is no such thing as imperfection, just difference.

The other thing I’ve discovered about tweens and teens is the importance of food – and lots of it! And this month’s issue is all about food, delicious winter warmers that will warm your soul. Enjoy!

Food Is Love

I love food. I like to cook it, I like to eat it, I like to go to awesome and amazing restaurants where people with way more skill than I create magic. There are so many cooking shows/competitions that make the whole process complex and mysterious. But it’s really very simple. When I was about 11, we moved away from where my grandparents lived. My Dutch grandmother used to make these things we called ‘Dutch croquettes’ like a double crumbed fried meatball. They were my favourite thing on the planet and also extremely time-consuming to make. My grandma made me an entire ice cream container full of them to take with me. I’m talking an old fashioned 4L cream container (it probably previously held Neapolitan ice cream… Also one of my favourites) not a small amount of work or love.

My son has been studying in Adelaide for the past three and a half years. One of the best things is when he texts me (or snap chats or messages) a request for the recipe for one of my specialties. This is also quite a task because I never measure anything, so I have to guess quantities that don’t use terms like a ‘sploosh’ of milk and explain that you take it out of the oven ‘when it’s cooked’ and I don’t have any accurate quantitative time frame for that.

I like to take time with food, both making and eating. I love a lunch that stretches over hours with wine, laughter, and good friends. I like to plan what I’m going to cook and shop for the best ingredients. I’ve inherited (from said Dutch grandmother) the need to cheer people up with food or nourish them when they are sick. I make peoples’ favourites when I haven’t seen them for a while or I know they just need some love.

There’s a cost-of-living crisis, federal politics is getting nasty and interest rates are rising. It’s absolutely time for a bit of therapeutic food as love. I wish you a night in with a creamy pumpkin soup, crusty dense sourdough, softened full fat butter and a glass of bold Shiraz.

Crushing your mid-year goals

Rebooting and Finishing Strong

Can you believe we’re already halfway through the year?

Time sure does fly. If you’re feeling a bit off track with your goals or resolutions, don’t worry! We’ve got your back. We’re sharing some practical tips and tricks to help you refocus, set new mid-year goals, and finish this year stronger than ever. So let’s dive in and make the most of the time we have left.

3 Break It Down:

Big goals can feel overwhelming, but breaking them down into smaller, actionable steps makes them more manageable. Map out a plan of action for each goal, and assign deadlines to keep yourself accountable. By focusing on one step at a time, youʼll steadily progress towards your objectives.

4 Seek Support and Accountability:

Share your goals with a trusted friend, family member, or mentor who can provide support and hold you accountable. Having someone to share your journey with can make a world of difference. Consider joining a supportive community or finding an accountability buddy who shares similar goals. Together, you can cheer each other on and overcome obstacles along the way.

5 Embrace Flexibility: Life is unpredictable, and sometimes unexpected challenges arise. Remember to be flexible and adapt your plans when necessary. Embrace the art of pivoting. If a particular approach isnʼt working, be open to trying new strategies. Stay committed to your goals, but allow room for adjustments as needed.

6 Prioritise Self-Care:

Donʼt forget to take care of yourself throughout this process. Achieving your goals requires energy, focus, and a clear mindset. Prioritize self-care activities that replenish your physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Set aside time for relaxation, exercise, hobbies, and spending quality time with loved ones. A healthy and balanced you will have the strength to tackle any challenge.

7 Track Your Progress and Celebrate Milestones:

1

Reflect on Your Progress: Take a moment to reflect on the goals you set at the beginning of the year. Celebrate the progress youʼve made so far, no matter how small. Acknowledge your achievements and use them as motivation to keep going. Remember, every step forward counts.

Keep track of your progress to stay motivated and see how far youʼve come. Use a journal, a habit tracker, or a goal-setting app to document your achievements. Celebrate each milestone, no matter how small. Treat yourself to something you enjoy or share your successes with others. Celebrating milestones along the way boosts morale and keeps the momentum going.

2

Reassess and Refine: Now, letʼs reassess your goals. Are they still relevant? Do they excite you? Itʼs okay if you need to make adjustments. Life happens, and priorities can shift. Be honest with yourself and realign your goals to reflect your current aspirations and circumstances. This is an opportunity to make your goals even more meaningful.

Youʼve got this! Mid-year is the perfect time to reboot and refocus your energy on what matters most to you. By reflecting on your progress, reassessing your goals, breaking them down into manageable steps, seeking support, embracing flexibility, prioritizing self-care, and celebrating milestones, youʼll set yourself up for success. Remember, itʼs never too late to chase your dreams and make this year your best one yet. So go out there and finish strong!

Did you know

CERTAIN TYPES OF VISIBLE LIGHT CAN MAKE YOUR HYPERPIGMENTATION WORSE?

So most people know that UV radiation makes hyperpigmentation and melasma worse, causing dark spots and an uneven skin tone. What many people don’t know is that blue and violet light, can also make hyperpigmentation worse.

Now before you worry about your phone and computer screens, you can rest easy to know that the blue and violet light from your everyday electronic devices is generally not strong enough to be of concern. However, the blue and violet light mixed in sunlight can definitely make pigmentation worse. This helps to explain why some people notice their pigmentation get worse after spending a lot of time outdoors despite using copious amounts of sunscreen regularly. It’s also worth noting that blue light in therapeutic grade LED facial treatments often used in acne treatments can also be strong enough to make hyperpigmentation worse.

So how do you minimise that effect? The easiest way is to either use a medium to full coverage tinted sunscreen, or if you use makeup to apply a medium to full coverage foundation over the top of your daily sunscreen. For those not familiar with the term, full coverage tint just means that when you apply the product to your skin, you don’t see any of the pigmentation.

Do Anti-Hyperpigmentation Treatment Creams Work?

There are actually quite a few active ingredients with clear evidence of helping to fade pigmentation. Weaker actives like vitamin C, niacinamide, and weaker forms of retinoids like retinol, can be found in cosmetic products, while there are stronger ingredients which require a prescription to access. However, they all have to be used at the right strengths, frequency, and with the right combination with other supporting skincare products to get the best results. They also can vary quite significantly in their potency, risk profiles, and timeframes in which they can produce results. This is why it’s important that if you’re ever interested in addressing melasma, hyperpigmentation, or uneven skin tones, that whoever you seek advice from can demonstrate and explain in detail the pros and cons of all the available options out there so you can make the best decision for your particular needs.

Which Diet IS RIGHT FOR YOU?

In today’s health-conscious world, there is an abundance of diets to choose from, each promising unique benefits and lifestyle improvements. However, finding the perfect diet that suits your needs can be overwhelming. Fear not! We’ve compiled a comprehensive list of the most popular diets, outlining their pros and cons, to help you make an informed decision about which one may be right for you. Whether you’re aiming for weight loss, increased energy, or overall wellbeing, we’ve got you covered.

1 2 The Mediterranean Diet:

Pros:

The Mediterranean diet is rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats such as olive oil. The diet also reduces red meat and focuses instead on lean proteins, such as fish and poultry. Research has shown numerous health benefits to this diet, including reduced risk of heart disease, brain health and helping regulate your blood sugar. And the best part? A glass of wine with your dinner is recommended! Reducing processed foods and red meat has also been seen to benefit the environment, using less water and land.

Cons:

However, the Mediterranean diet may not be the most cost effective. Although there are no initial costs to swapping diets, foods such as fresh fish, nuts, fruit and olive oil may add up over time. To get around this, try frozen seafood instead, you will still get all of the health benefits, but at a fraction of the cost. This diet can also feel quite restricting as it does not allow for any processed foods, which most of us have become accustomed to over the years. And although the occasional red wine is seen as a serious positive for the diet, the line is a bit blurry. As with any diet, over indulging can affect your health and wellbeing, so being mindful of your portions is a must!

The Vegetarian Diet:

Pros:

The vegetarian diet focuses on plantbased foods, including fruits, vegetables, legumes, grains, and nuts. But this diet allows for flexibility, as you still get to enjoy animal products, such as honey, dairy and eggs, making it easy to incorporate to your day-to-day life. And with many meat-substitutes on the market today, you’ll hardly know the difference! As with the Mediterranean diet, the reduction in red meat can lead to weight loss and improve your heart health. But one of the biggest driving factors for this diet is supporting ethical and environmental concerns related to animal agriculture.

Cons:

If you are considering taking up the vegetarian diet, you may need to do some planning to ensure you are having balanced meals, as many vegetarians take supplements such as vitamin B12 and iron. Meat substitutions can also get very pricey if you are relying on them in your diet. As the vegetarian diet does not restrict processed foods or junk foods, to experience significant weight loss, you will need to focus on eating whole vegetables.

GET IT I HEALTH GET IT July 2023 16

3 4

The Vegan Diet:

Pros:

The vegan diet excludes all animal-derived products, emphasizing plant-based foods. This diet is often associated with a lower body weight and a reduced risk of heart disease and inflammation. However, as with the vegetarian diet, one of the most influential arguments for the vegan diet is its ethical and sustainable ties.

Cons:

This diet is one of the hardest to incorporate into your routine. As with vegetarians, vegans often have to ensure they are getting adequate nutrients, and may have to consider taking supplements for vitamin B12, D, and omega-3 fatty acids. Also with vegetarians, plant-based substitutes may become more expensive. But what makes the vegan diet often feel unattainable are challenges relating to social situations and eating out, as venues may not have adequate vegan options on hand.

The Clean Eating Diet:

Pros:

The clean eating diet is all about going back to basics and nourishing our bodies with minimally processed, whole foods. By following this clean eating approach, youʼre not only on a mission to shed those extra pounds sustainably, but youʼre also giving your overall health a major boost. Not only will you see those pounds gradually melt away, but youʼll also notice improved energy levels and an overall sense of well-being.

Cons:

One thing to keep in mind is that it may require a bit more time and effort in the kitchen. Since youʼll be focusing on preparing meals from scratch and using fresh ingredients, itʼs natural that it might take a little longer to whip up those delicious, wholesome creations. Another aspect to be aware of is the potential impact on your wallet. Letʼs face it, those processed convenience foods are often cheaper and more readily available. So, when you choose to embark on a clean eating journey, you might notice a slight increase in your grocery bill.

The Keto Diet:

Pros:

Say hello to ketosis, a metabolic state where your body switches gears and starts burning fat for energy instead of carbohydrates. One of the first things you might notice on the keto diet is rapid initial weight loss. As your body adjusts to the low-carb intake, it taps into those fat stores and sheds excess weight. It can help improve insulin sensitivity by reducing carbohydrate intake. Studies suggest that the keto diet may have anti-inflammatory effects, potentially helping with conditions such as arthritis or other inflammatory disorders. And letʼs not forget about the food! The keto diet allows you to indulge in a variety of delicious highfat foods. Think creamy avocados, crunchy nuts, and ooey-gooey cheese.

Cons:

The strict carbohydrate restriction can be challenging to maintain, especially in a world filled with carb-loaded temptations. In the beginning, some individuals may experience side effects like fatigue, irritability, or difficulty concentrating, also known as the “keto flu.” Itʼs also important to note that the keto diet may not be suitable for everyone. Individuals with certain medical conditions, such as pancreatitis or liver disease, should avoid this diet or consult with a healthcare professional before giving it a try.

The Paleo Diet:

Pros:

The Paleo diet journeys back in time to embrace the eating habits of our ancestors. This diet encourages us to fill our plates with whole, unprocessed foods, just like our early hunter-gatherer predecessors did. By focusing on lean proteins, such as poultry, fish, and grassfed meat, along with an abundance of fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds, youʼre giving your body a nutrient-packed feast. These wholesome choices can lead to weight loss and improved blood sugar control, making it an attractive option for those seeking a healthier lifestyle.

Cons:

The Paleo diet eliminates grains, legumes, and dairy, which can result in nutrient deficiencies if not carefully planned. These food groups often provide valuable nutrients like fibre, calcium, and certain vitamins that contribute to overall wellbeing. Another challenge lies in adapting the Paleo diet to our modern-day settings, especially when dining out or attending social events. Itʼs worth noting that the Paleo diet has limited long-term research behind it. While short-term studies have shown potential benefits, there is still much to explore in terms of its overall impact on health and longevity.

Conclusion:

Choosing the right diet is a personal decision that should consider your health goals, lifestyle, and preferences. The Mediterranean diet offers a balanced approach to healthy eating, while vegetarian and vegan diets cater to ethical and environmental concerns. Clean eating promotes whole foods, while the keto diet emphasizes fat consumption for weight loss and the paleo will transport you back in time. Remember, itʼs crucial to consult with a healthcare professional or registered dietitian before making any significant dietary changes to ensure it aligns with your individual needs and supports your overall well-being.

Who Is White Oat Distillery?

It all kicked off with a little skulduggery.

Before we had a tap room (or even a name), our distiller, Tudor, and one of the founders were raiding the supply room of a well-known brewery. Tudor kept watch, relaying instructions, while Andy simply pilfered anything he could get his hands on. In his haste, he grabbed a big bag of white oats.

Tudor thought it was hilarious. They’re not something you’d normally put in gin. But then again, why not?

From then on, the White Oat has symbolised our spirit of roguish experimentation. Giving things a crack. Throwing caution out the supply room door. Creating old favourites with new ideas.

In an industry where things are generally done a certain way and you’re expected to be a certain way, we just aren’t.

Our drinks are more than just about gin. They’re about the entire experience— where it’s from, where you have it, who you have it with, and the memories that are created along the way.

Here’s to the spirit of the White Oat. Gin. But not as you know it.

Nurturing Healthy Bodies and Positive Minds:

Expert Insights on Children’s Weight Loss and Body Image

In a society often obsessed with appearance and body ideals, parents face the difficult challenge of helping their children maintain a healthy weight while nurturing a positive body image. To gain insights into this delicate balance, Get it Magazine’s Laura Broad spoke with Veya Seekis, a renowned body image researcher at Griffith University.

How can parents approach the topic of weight loss with their children without triggering negative body image issues or low self-esteem?

The discussion of weight loss should only be necessary if there is a medical concern that relates to the child’s weight. Speaking about weight loss with a child in any context will likely trigger in them the idea that they are not accepted as they are which can lead to negative body image and low self-esteem. Body image research shows that discussion with children about the positives of healthy eating far outweigh discussions about losing weight.

What role does body positivity play in promoting a healthy approach to weight loss for children? How can parents foster a positive body image while addressing weightrelated concerns?

We would we encourage parents to discuss healthy eating and how that can help them feel more energised and how it can help their brain develop. Speaking about food should always be in the positive, in other words the things it can add to the child’s life rather than in the negative (i.e., what they are likely to lose). This sort of talk helps them to understand the purpose of healthy living and promotes the idea that people can be healthy regardless of their body shape or size.

GET IT I EXPERT GET IT July 2023 22

How can parents create a supportive and non-judgmental environment for their children during the weight loss journey? What are some effective communication techniques to use when discussing weight and health?

Focus on the gains of health living such as functionality of their body and appreciation of what their body can do. What can they do that they couldn’t before? Some examples could be, climbing stairs without running out of breath or carrying shopping or school bags without having to stop all the time. In other words, eating healthily and exercising are likely to strengthen their body, improve their respiratory system and allow them to enjoy activities.

What are the potential psychological impacts of focusing solely on weight loss without considering body positivity? How can parents strike a balance?

Focusing on weight loss contradicts the point of body positivity and I would not recommend discussing the two with children. Help them understand the types of images they are likely to see on social media are unrealistic and promote very narrow body type standards. If on social media, they should mix up their feed so that they are not simply engaging with appearance but other interests as well such as art, comedy, animals etc. Following body positivity and body neutrality accounts have also shown to be useful in helping young people be more appreciative of their bodies and understand that a healthy body comes in all shapes, sizes, and abilities.

Are there any warning signs or red flags parents should watch out for that indicate their child may be developing an unhealthy relationship with food or body image during the weight loss process?

Food should be considered the fuel that helps us function. The focus should be on the benefits of healthy living not weight loss.

How can parents promote body acceptance and self-love throughout their childʼs weight loss journey? Are there any specific practices or exercises that can help cultivate a positive body image?

There is evidence to suggest that selfcompassion can provide a sense of comfort if the child is going through a challenging time. This includes acknowledgement of the negative feelings, putting them into perspective and understanding that the feelings are shared by most people at some time, and then showing themselves the type of kindness and comfort they would show a friend who was sad. Self-compassion has also been shown to increase resilience in young children. Self-appreciation is also an excellent way to encourage children to be body positive. For example, as a daily exercise they may write down in their journal something they are grateful for about themselves (it doesn’t need to be appearance related), identify those positive feelings, write about the act (if they helped someone that day) or about an achievement, or even about their family and how they may have contributed to the thing they are grateful for. They can then show themselves some kindness – for example they can say something to themselves like, “thank you for being so understanding today.”

Top foods to eat for a happy heart

When it comes to fitness and strength, 70 per cent of your result is nutrition. With that said, it is important to ensure we are eating a balanced diet that looks after our overall health, especially including foods that are good for your health. Here are our top recommendations.

Fruit, Vegetables and Whole Grains

Fruit and vegetables are some of the best foods for heart health, but as you have probably guessed, Australians don’t eat enough of this food group. The importance of including 5 servings of fruit and vegetables over the day is to ensure we can get enough vitamins and minerals, fibre, and antioxidants into our bodies, which have been shown to reduce our risk of heart disease.

Some examples of these foods for heart health include brown rice, multigrain bread, wholemeal pasta and wholegrain rolled oats. These foods are full of soluble fibre which becomes a thick gel in our intestine. This slows down digestion, stops blood sugar from spiking and traps fats so they can’t be absorbed.

Healthy Proteins

Not all protein sources are created equal, and some proteins are definitely better foods for heart health. Including plant proteins such as chickpeas, lentils, nuts and seeds and Seafood like salmon and sardines are high in omega 3 which have been shown to reduce the number of triglycerides (a type of fat) in your bloodstream. They also stop the buildup of plaque which is a substance of fat, cholesterol and calcium that hardens in your blood and blocks up your arteries.

Dairy

Foods that fall into this category include: milk, yogurt and cheese. These don’t necessarily lead to an increase or decrease in heart disease, but their importance cannot be understated as these provide an excellent source of calcium and protein. As a rule of thumb, you should also aim for unflavoured versions as these are generally low in added sugar. These best ones we have found include Yo-Pro by Danone and the Chobani Fit range, both readily available in Coles and Woolworths. If you do suffer from heart disease or high cholesterol, we would recommend switching to reduced fat milk instead of the full fat alternatives.

Healthy Fats & Oils

Consuming too many ‘poor fats’ can increase your risk of developing heart disease. Saturated fat and trans fats are the main unhealthy fats and can raise the Non-HDL cholesterol in our blood. We want to food that’s good for your heart, with monounsaturated fats (these have small amounts of good fat) like, almonds, cashews, olive oil and avocado. As well as foods that contain polyunsaturated fats such as salmon, mackerel and nuts (like walnuts and sunflower seeds) which supply Omega 3 and 6 that the body cannot produce on its own.

Herbs & Spices

Another part of our diet that can lead to an unhappy heart can be too much salt. A diet high in salt can disrupt the natural sodium balance in the body which causes fluid retention and in turn increase the pressure exerted by the blood against the blood vessel walls. Many people don’t realise most of the salt that they consume is found in processed and packaged food such as deli meat and baked foods. The best way to reduce salt is to ensure to follow the Australian Heart Foundation guidelines by eating a diet of unprocessed foods of fruit and vegetables and if you need to add flavour to your foods, do so by utilizing different herbs and spices.

RECLAIM YOUR CONFIDENCE:

Experience Rapid Hair Restoration at Hair and Skin Science Clinics

Both men and women often fall victim to hair loss or thinning, which can result in a lack of confidence, despite being overwhelmingly common! Roughly 50% of men will experience some hair loss or thinning by their 50’s as well as 40% of women. Whilst the most common treatment for hair loss is often extreme and involves going under the knife, Hair and Skin Science clinics offer a range of professional and affordable treatments to help you get rapid results.

Micro-needling is crucial for promoting the blood flow in your scalp making the treatment more effective. This procedure will then promote natural hair growth by strengthening the follicle.

Hair and Skin Science clinics are the largest provider of PRP treatments in Australia and have performed over 100,000 PRP hair treatments in just two years, so if you are looking for hair loss treatment Gold Coast you are in safe hands! PRP has quickly become one of the most popular treatments to have instead of injectables, fillers and surgery, definitely a treatment worth trying.

Founder and director Jenna Chan is a single mother who is changing the face of skincare in Australia. After decades in the beauty industry and working with some of the world’s most notable brands, Jenna launched her own anti-aging skincare clinic. Finding herself divorced and taking care of her two young children meant that Jenna always aspired to be able to give her children more as they grew up. That’s why at 59 she took the brave step to launch her first clinic. Jenna is testament to the fact it’s never too late to chase your dreams and be successful no matter your financial situation or age.

Looking for other treatments? The business has now become the ‘go to’ place for the famous ‘vampire facial’ which keeps clients’ skin looking fresh by injecting the skin with cells from their own blood, ensuring incredible results. Clients come back time and time again to take advantage of the procedure that’s a favourite of many celebs including Kim Kardashian.

7. Transfer the mixture to a piping bag fitted with a large open star nozzle.

8. In a large pan over medium heat, add the oil until it comes halfway up the side of the pan and heat to 180°C.

9. Holding the piping bag a few inches above the oil, carefully pipe the mixture to 6" in length, using scissors to cut the dough from the piping bag.

10. Fry until golden, about 5 minutes.

11. Fry 3 to 4 churros at a time and let oil come back to 180°C before each batch.

12. Remove the churros with a slotted spoon or tongs and immediately roll the churros in the cinnamon maple sugar, then place on a cooling rack.

To Make the Caramel:

1. In a large pan, add the maple spread and double cream.

2. Boil both ingredients on medium heat for 1 minute, stirring continuously.

3. Add the unsalted butter and sea salt at the end, stir and pour into a jar.

From Side Hustle to Online Selling

Megan Tait, founder of Goldstarsourced on eBay, shares her story of finding her feet in the world of pre-loved fashion reselling, from her favourite personal finds to what pieces make the cut for her online store.

When did you first get into flipping preloved clothing, and what inspired you to make this move?

I’ve always had a love for pre-loved fashion. Like most people, I started by selling things on eBay that I no longer wore or suited my style. Occasionally, I would come across a beautiful piece in a second-hand store that I just had to have, even if I knew I wouldn’t wear it. My wardrobe grew with these unique pieces that were just being admired yet unworn, so I started finding new homes for them online.

Success

What was life like before you started, and what was your main motivation for this side hustle?

I previously worked in a role where I felt stagnant and bored. Reselling started as something to do in my spare time but it eventually grew to a point where I could leave my old role and work independently which has been excellent.

How did you get started, and where did you source your finds?

I sold my pre-loved clothing on eBay for many years before looking for other sourcing opportunities. It started with things lying around my house and then friends would ask me to sell stuff for them. It moved to selling on consignment, sourcing from second-hand stores, and now I have moved into purchasing designer wardrobe clearouts from private sellers.

I lean into selling higher-end women’s clothing. Australian designer brands like Aje, Scanlan Theodore and Zimmermann are my favourite because they’re of excellent quality and are in demand. Buying pre-loved pieces makes these labels accessible and affordable while giving the clothing a second chance at life.

What are your tips and tricks for others looking to get started?

Start by clearing out pieces from your wardrobe first to get a feel of what works best for you. I find luxury items will sell well on eBay. Designer items made from high-quality materials are a natural fit for reselling as the hardware is built to last.

How has this changed your life financially and otherwise?

I have a lot more flexibility with time and the hours I work. Being my own boss is incredibly satisfying and I wouldn’t change it for anything now. I’m surprised and pleased that so many other people are turning their side hustles into full-time gigs now!

What are some of your favourite fashion finds and flips?

My absolute favourite sales are when I sell something I’ve purchased, either for retail price or pre-loved on eBay itself, for virtually the same as what I paid for it. For example, I purchased a beautiful Aje dress for a wedding not long ago. I wore it twice and then resold it for close to the retail price. The girl who purchased it from me was thrilled as she had been trying to hunt it down for months after it sold out in the store. Circular fashion at its best!

Are there any pieces you just couldnʼt let go of?

There are two pieces I couldnʼt let go of. The first is an authentic vintage Louis Vuitton Saumur bag I found about 20 years ago for $5 at a flea market overseas. The second is a pair of RM Williams Millicent boots I have worn to death and cannot part with.

Do you think more Aussies will get into this space to adjust to higher costs of living?

As cost of living pressures continue and pre-loved fashion moves more into the mainstream, more shoppers will embrace it as they can find great pieces without compromising style. The hunt for unique finds and great prices is all part of the fun.

What are your standards for choosing something to be featured on your online store?

I’ve always loved fashion and I appreciate the time and effort that goes into creating quality pieces. I feel there is also a huge movement at the moment towards more sustainable fashion and creating timeless pieces that can be worn for any occasion.

I have a quality-over-quantity approach when sourcing items. My store certainly embraces quality pieces that are versatile and timeless.
