LETTER FROM

Nicole Editor Is it February already? While time might be flying at apparent breakneck speed, the arrival of February also brings the arrival of our first issue for 2021 – and my first issue as editor! It’s crazy to think back to this time last year, and how different our world was then – little did we know that lockdowns, mandated masks, remote working, and home schooling would be par for the course for 2020. Yet, here we are, 12 months later – and we survived! And if there is one lesson most of us learnt from the events of last year, it’s that nothing is more important than LOVE. And what better time to celebrate love than February – the most loved up month on the calendar! But we’re not just celebrating romantic love – we’re recognising love in all its forms - family love, unique friendships, heck, even pet love. Of course, let’s not forget the most valuable, yet frequently neglected category – self-love (check out the five ways you can learn to love yourself more on page 18). Love comes in many shapes and sizes, and now, more than ever, it’s crucial that we embrace it in whatever way it presents itself to us. One thing I’ve learnt, is that not everything goes to plan when it comes to love. Real love isn’t always storybook perfect. And this year, I am ALL about love. I’m getting married! But it’s not just my partner’s love I’ll be celebrating. I’ll also be honouring the love of the two boys that came along with him – my two bonus children. And he’ll be celebrating the love of the three children that make up my package deal, as we become – officially – a family of seven. We’ll also be celebrating our parents, our siblings, our extended family, and our friends. As well as the enduring love for those we’ve lost along the way. There is no right way to experience love, it’s the experience itself that matters. So, remember, if the love in your life doesn’t fit the storybook definition, that doesn’t mean it can’t be a fairy tale. After all, you are the author.

GET IT I PROFILE

Life Behind the Lens Name: Sean Scott Website and social media we should know about: seanscottphotography Sean Scott Photography Seanscottphotography.com.au

With a profession that sees him capture the most spectacular Australian landscapes, photographer Sean Scott talks to Get It Magazine about iconic destinations, staying present and his love for all things Gold Coast.

What sparked your career in photography? I got started in photography while I was working full time as an electrician and linesman. People started taking a lot of interest in my work so I began selling my prints at local markets - everything just grew from there. Three years after starting my market stall, I left my full time job to follow my passion and have not looked back since. I have had my gallery in Burleigh Heads for 17 years and I’m fortunate to be an ambassador for Tourism Australia, which means to get to spend a lot of the year touring around Australia capturing images. As Australia begins to open up again, we are all looking to take in more of our own beautiful backyard - what’s next on your destination list? Western Australia is next on my destination list, I’ve built a custom outback photography 4WD that allows me to live and work in very remote locations all over Australia. This 4WD has been my home over the past eight weeks as I’ve been on the road travelling Queensland. I’ve been everywhere from the gulf to the outback and right across to the Great Barrier Reef.

Where are your top three ‘must see’ Australian locations? 1. Cape Le Grand National Park in WA. The water clarity, wildlife and colour over there are like nothing you’ve seen before.

GET IT February 2021

2. Fraser Island in Queensland. Taking my 4WD and exploring this part of Queensland is epic.

3. The Kimberley in WA. This is a wild and amazing part of the country - it really is a spectacular part of Australia.

What do you appreciate most about the Gold Coast?

SALE

I love hitting the road and touring around Australia and the world, but I also love to come home. The waves and beaches are as good as any place on Earth. The crystal clear water and the rainforest in the hinterland offer limitless photographic opportunities and my local community of Burleigh Heads is a great place to call home. What is a key life lesson that your career has taught you? Stop and look around. It’s amazing how often I’m shooting an incredible scene and notice other visitors walking along but not taking the time to actually see where they are. I’ve found that beautiful moments are around us all the time, so if you stop and appreciate what we have, then you will be much richer for it.

GET IT I GET THINKING

Time for a Brake! — by krysten davis —

I

eat too fast. Often, I’m halfway through the meal before I’ve really savored or tasted anything.

I also read too fast. I inhale a book in a day, and then move on to the next one. My speed of reading also makes me a really lousy proofreader (any typos are entirely my fault!) I definitely consume alcohol too fast - contemplating my next drink before finishing the first (not a great anti-hangover strategy). My life is lived at what feels like break-neck speed. I’m always able to add ‘one more thing’ to my to-do list, and I struggle to say ‘no’. Between work, family, and friends, I often feel like I’m completely ‘snowed’, and this leaves me short-fused and weary. I feel like my word for 2020 (actually, probably the last 20 years!) was ‘busy’. My aim for 2021 is to change my word from ‘busy’ to ‘slow’. Not ‘slow’ as in a sandwich short of a picnic! But just to try and take my time - reading, eating, drinking, living. I know it’s a bit of a cliché - but I really want to try and be ‘in the moment’. I want to force myself to take the time to experience what is right in front of me and not be thinking/planning about what comes next.

The best coffee on the

I want to stop using the time in the lift to work as an opportunity to check emails (or, to be honest, Facebook) on my phone. I want to listen to someone speaking and not be thinking about what I need to buy for dinner, or the phone call I need to make. I want to listen to my family’s stories (even if I’ve heard them before), and not be wanting them to ‘get to the point’.

For the lovers of really good coffee.

I am going to actively limit my ‘screen time’, (I’m always a little bit terrified/guilty when my phone tells me the average hours a day I’ve spent looking at other people’s photos or satirical trump videos!).

Award winning Crema Lovers is a must when you visit Tamborine Mountain. Great coffee and home-style cooking.

I’m going to consciously try to slow myself down, to listen better, and to learn to say a clear, emphatic ‘no’ when I’m once again asked to overextend myself. If 2020 has taught us anything- it’s not to take things for granted. I’m going to slow down and appreciate in 2021 what we took for granted in 2019.

GET IT I REAL LIFE

Names: Sarah Megginson and David Christopher (Sarah Megginson and Christo) Website and social media we should know about:

pandemic had just hit and it was my brother’s birthday, and he lives just around the corner from Easy Street Diner, so I decided to get him a gift voucher. I got chatting to the owner over email and he mentioned they were thinking of selling.

www.easystreetdiner.com.au We met the landlord and on the walls of easystreetdiner christoradio

his office were some beautiful paintings. I recognised them - my brother was the artist! We both felt this was a sign that we were on the right track. It was a massive gamble, but so far it’s paying off.

5. What’s next on the horizon for you? Our youngest child Jesse starts school in 2021! For the first time ever we’ll have all three children on the same morning schedule. For the business, we are looking to expand into new locations.

6. What’s a favourite date-night activity on the Gold Coast? Definitely dinner and drinks - we have so many beautiful restaurants and such a vibrant dining community on the Gold Coast, and we love Fig and Frankies for a low-key date night.

1. How did you meet, and how would you describe yourselves?

3. What’s it been like working together with the new business?

We met 20 years ago through mutual friends - I’m super analytical and very numbersdriven. Christo is the total opposite – he’s very creative and full of ideas! He’s always ready to say yes, and I’m the one who does all the due diligence to make sure the numbers really do stack up.

It’s just all encompassing. Buying this business in the middle of COVID, adapting to all the restrictions while we both work full time with three kids. We never switch off, there’s always something we need to fix or discuss, or an idea we’ve had!

7. Do you each have a “love language”?

4. What is one thing you both love most about the other?

8. What is the best advice you would give to a couple looking to go into business together?

2. You purchased Easy Street Diner in 2020 - how did this come about? It’s a really unusual story. The

We’re both willing to take a chance on something new. For the first ten years of our relationship we moved around the country to wherever Christo’s latest radio job would take us - we love adventures.

17

Yes we do, and I think this is such a great and useful thing for couples to learn. We both have different love languages that change constantly, but mine is gifts, and Christo’s is words of affirmation.

Delegate the tasks so you each play to your strengths and the workload is halved. Also, don’t take anything personally when you’re having a disagreement. Work through it, make a decision and move on!

5 Ways to

love yourself

Leading into Valentine’s Day, there’s a big emphasis on being coupled up, and showing your partner how much you love them. But, have you ever actually done this for yourself? Arguably the most important relationship is the one you have with yourself, and if you aren’t confident in self-love, it can be challenging to receive love from others. Valentine’s Day isn’t just about love letters and chocolates for couples, it’s also the perfect time to celebrate ourselves and practice self-love. Luke Foster, psychologist and Mental Health Strategy Advisor for GCbased mental health charity LIVIN, shares his top five tips for loving ourselves today and every day.

routine can make a big difference. Prioritise good sleep, 30 minutes of movement a day, a balanced diet, and some quiet time to wind down in the evening. Self-love is like a muscle, and if you train it regularly it will grow!

3 Stay Grateful Spend time each day reflecting on the things in life that you’re grateful for, the positive influences and support around you. A gratitude notebook is a great way to record these daily thoughts each morning to set the tone for your day, and to take the time to appreciate all of your own unique strengths and qualities. Harnessing the power of self-love this way can shift your perspective across relationships, work and dayto-day life.

4. Learn to Forgive Yourself

This can be as simple as listening to a podcast for ten minutes a day, taking time to read a chapter in a new book, or doing a five minute meditation. Whatever it is, make sure that one act is all about you. By treating ourselves with kindness, we can then give our best selves to others.

If a friend, or even a work colleague, makes a mistake, we will often forgive them without a second thought, but it can be a very different story when it comes to forgiving ourselves. Making mistakes is a part of life, so don’t be too hard on yourself. Try not to dwell on the past and don’t waste energy berating yourself for something that went wrong, allow yourself to move on and treat yourself with kindness.

2. Make Self-Care a Daily Ritual

5. Don’t Fall Prey to Comparison

coupled up when you browse social media (especially on Valentine’s Day!). In all areas of life, self-love comes down to appreciating who you are in this moment, so avoid comparing your life to someone else’s - you never know exactly what’s going on behind the Instagram photo anyway! So, this Valentine’s Day, make it a celebration of self-love, do the things that make you feel good, and take care of yourself before you look after those around you. livin.org | instagram @livinorg

Creating a

summer retreat

How to give your home that magical holiday feeling all year round For many Australians, summer trips abroad look to be set in the distant future. Staycations are the new trend, and making the most of our homes has never been more important. According to Interior Designer, Simone Matthews, creating an oasis within your home can be achieved by focusing on the aesthetics of your interiors, pulling together a cohesive look that champions light, and the ease of moving through spaces. “I am a big believer that the key to achieving that holiday style is to mix it up, that’s how you create your own unique look and feel,” says Matthews. In her latest project, The PAUSE, Matthews focused on combining key styles. “We are simplifying the way we live, and a key factor of that is integrating nature into our lives and appreciating how nature makes us feel,” she says. “To create an atmosphere that feels like a calm oasis from the outside world, we used a ‘less is more’ approach with colours and materials. Using a base palette of coastal white against natural timbers and brass, the key is to mix the materials, natural fabrics and textures in similar colour palettes to create the final look.

GET IT February 2021

Utilising natural light will add the most visual character to a room. “We really wanted to champion light without using too many lamps or overhead lights so, unfiltered natural light was a goal for us,” she says. Sheer curtains are a great way to achieve a soft light and provide a certain mood to a space. “Luxaflex curtains create a light show; moving against the concrete floors, combined with the morning and afternoon light, it really creates a magnetic energy” “Layering curtains with other window treatments is the ultimate solution to balancing functionality, performance and style while gently diffusing light to bring a relaxed mood to the home.” Nothing completes an Australian home than an outside area to entertain, play and relax. “We spend so much of our time outdoors, so it’s important to have a space that can function, no matter what season it is,” says Matthews. Outdoor awnings can maximise your living space with a seamless indoor-outdoor transition as well as offering advanced sun protection and airflow for a more enjoyable entertaining space, while providing the added benefit of helping maintain your home’s internal temperature.

20

“Ideally, you want an awning that blends with your home and doesn’t detract from the overall look and style,” she says. “When we saw the Luxaflex® Evo MagnaTrack Awning and chose to install them, it had a huge impact on our design. We removed our dining space from the internal living plans and allowed for a larger kitchen and communal area. The Evo MagnaTrack enabled the outdoor dining space to transform into an indoor space as needed; which was a serious game changer in our design.” With many Australians will be spending their ‘pause’ in their homes, Matthews says rethinking how to incorporate a few design elements into the home will go a long way to creating that holiday feeling. 10 REASONS WHY You Should Spend Your Vacation at a

t a e r t e R h lt a He

For many of us, vacations are a time to press pause on daily life and slow down. For others, holidays are a time for adventure. Whatever your reason for getting away is, we all want to return feeling refreshed, energised and motivated, writes Charmaine Yabsley. But how often do you feel as though you need a vacation as soon as you get home from one? At a health retreat, the whole purpose is to provide an experience that is equally as enjoyable as it is beneficial in creating healthy, sustainable habits. So if you’re starting to plan your next holiday, here are 10 reasons why you should spend your stay at a health retreat.

GET IT February 2021

#1 Finding your healthy balance On holidays, you may find yourself maintaining habits that are hindering your well-being or indulging in activities that you enjoy in the moment but aren’t beneficial in the long run. For example, continuously checking work emails, or letting go of exercise and nutrition for your time away. A stay at a health retreat will help you recharge in a way that will last beyond your time at the retreat, identifying what’s weighing you down, and tailoring your stay to overcome any mental or physical barriers to your health.

#2 Learn to live life consciously It’s so easy for us to get swept away in our day-to-day life that we can often forget to stop and become fully aware of our surroundings, and appreciate the little things. 22

GET IT I TRAVEL A stay at a health retreat allows you the time to become more grounded and gain a balanced perspective without distractions.

#3 Connect with nature Escape the concrete jungle and become completely immersed in nature. From strolling along scenic bush walks to hearing the songs of wildlife at night to filling your lungs with fresh air, connection to nature is a huge part of rejuvenating and recentring your mind and body.

#4 Access to expert advice and treatments At most health retreats, you’ll have access to a range of health and wellness experts that will not only help and guide you during your stay, but give you tips and tools to carry this knowledge into your everyday life.

#5 Nourishment with every meal Whilst balance is important, neglecting nourishing food over your entire holiday will be a key reason as to why you come home feeling tired and sluggish. Food is a core pillar of your health, which is why it’s such a key focus at health retreats.

#6 Time for reflection A health retreat is the perfect environment to reflect and truly identify what parts of your life could be turned around to enhance your health and happiness. Counsellors can also provide assistance in addressing and overcoming any obstacles to your mental and physical wellbeing.

#7 Meet new people People from all walks of life attend health retreats. You’ll no doubt will meet both like minded people and those you may open your

mind to new perspectives, creating an even more enriching experience.

#8 Digital detox Our modern lives are inundated with screens. Whether working, relaxing, or socialising, screens have become a huge part of almost every aspect of our lives. Time at a health retreat gives you the opportunity to break this habit and reliance on technology and undergo a digital detox.

#9 An experience personalised to you Unlike holidays with friends or family where you’ll often find yourself agreeing with other people’s plans, the purpose of a health retreat is to focus on yourself. Whether your goal is to manage your stress levels,

23

learn how to improve your physical health, or simply achieve true relaxation, health retreats offer a customised experience.

#10 Holistic healing Truly transforming your wellbeing isn’t just about addressing one or two aspects of your life, it’s about changing your mindset and approach to interdependent elements of your life for holistic healing. Beyond a surface-level detox, health retreats aim to truly connect to the root of any aspect of your life that may be hindering your wellbeing. Photo credits. Let’s face it, after the frivolity of the festive season, we could all benefit from giving our digestive system a break, and fuelling our body with some nutrient dense goodness. Julie Mitsios, author of Eat More Raw, shares her favourite liquid goodies with Get It readers.

GET IT I RECIPES

Cold-Press Juices Cold-press juices are loaded with enzymes, vitamins and minerals. Juicing is also a great way to get all your serves of veggies in one glass. Adding cold-press vegetable juices to your routine will propel your health to another level. I recommend drinking on an empty stomach for maximum absorption and to drink as soon as possible after it has been made.

Ingredients

Give Me Clarity

2 celery stalks 1 whole cucumber 2 cups greens (spinach, bok choy, kale) 1 handful parsley

This was our famous green juice at the cafe. I use fennel fronds in this which would otherwise have been thrown away. The fennel increases the vitamin C content and gives the juice a hint of sweetness. It’s also a wonderful digestive aid. Dark leafy greens contain loads of chlorophyll and are a powerful rejuvenating boost for your body. Prep:

5 minutes

Equipment:

cold-press juicer

Serves:

1

1 green apple (optional, for added sweetness) ½ lemon 1 cm (¼ in) piece of ginger

Method Wash all ingredients well and chop to the right size for your juicer. Add to juicer, alternating between softer and harder ingredients, adding the greens and herbs then the cucumber, celery and lemon. Stir well and enjoy.

Give Me Transformation

Ingredients 2 beetroots, whole 1 cucumber, whole 2 celery stalks 1 handful dandelion greens ½ lemon

This juice is a great liver tonic with beetroot and dandelion both known for keeping your liver healthy. Beetroots are rich in the phytonutrient betanin, which supports detoxification and is rich in antioxidants. Prep:

5 minutes

Equipment:

cold-press juicer

Serves:

1

Method Wash all ingredients well and chop to the right size for your juicer. Alternate between adding the beetroot and the celery then the cucumber and dandelion. Stir well and enjoy.

Ingredients

Give Me Immunity

2 oranges 2 carrots 2 celery stalks 2 cm piece turmeric

This juice is loaded with vitamin C from the oranges and carrots, with turmeric and ginger adding value for their healing and antiinflammatory properties. Prep:

5 minutes

Equipment:

cold-press juicer

Serves:

1

1 cm piece ginger

Method Wash all ingredients well. Peel the oranges and chop everything to the right size for your juicer. Alternate juicing the oranges with the carrots, celery, turmeric and ginger. Stir well and enjoy.

Note If you’re using organic produce, which I highly recommend, especially when juicing, you can add the lemon with the peel and all. Cold-press juices maintain nutritional stability for 72 hours. If using a centrifugal juicer, for optimal nutrition, consume within 10 minutes of making it. 25

Bring back the spark this

s ’ e in t n e l a V Psychotherapist, Julie Sweet, shares her top five tips for bringing back the spark in your relationship this Valentine’s Day.

GET IT February 2021

GET IT I LIFESTYLE 1. Manage expectations: First thing’s first, have an open discussion around expectations relating to Valentine’s Day so you’re both on the same page. People have different ideals and with that comes fundamental differences, so put your cards on the table and communicate clearly. A wonderful tool to use is simply state how you feel and what you need. So, if Valentine’s Day is important to you, say so, if it’s not, again voice that. That way both people have their needs met.

2. Find out each other’s attachment styles: Similar to knowing one another’s love languages, it’s beneficial to know your partner’s attachment style. Stan Tatkin puts it simply in naming the various attachment styles as generally being an anchor (secure), a wave (anxious), or an island (avoidant). Once you’ve talked to each other about the style you identify with most, challenges ahead can be minimised.

essential because not only do they provide safety and security, they give each couple a roadmap. After all knowledge is power.

3. Be vulnerable: Vulnerability is paramount in any intimate relationship, for its a tie that binds a couple and a healthy way to function (individually and in relationship). Vulnerability doesn’t need to be feared or avoided, and in saying that, give yourself permission to be brave and take a risk when choosing how to spend your Valentine’s Day. If tensions rise, or whenever you feel angst, simply name it in the here and now. Instead of turning away from your partner, move toward them and express whatever is coming up for you. There can be a lot of pressure associated with Valentine’s Day and couples sometimes need to be reminded it’s the small daily things that matter most, rather than one significant event, so be mindful to stay grounded.

4. Do something different:

This information will not only provide you both with clarity, it will enable you to create closeness, maintain communication and establish boundaries.

Get curious and then attend to your partner.

Now people may ask ‘what do boundaries have to do with Valentine’s Day?’ yet they are

It’s also about having the emotional agility and courage to change your behaviour and

Once more it’s about feeling safe enough to be vulnerable.

27

do something you’d ordinarily not do when it comes to celebrating Valentine’s Day. Taking this bold step to change our patterns and become flexible, more exciting, less rigid and more spontaneous can enhance our relationships.

5. Bring back romance: Corny to some, yet more often than not welcomed by many partners, especially with how busy our lives tend to become. Romance has all to do with considering the other person and having their best interest at the forefront. This is where romance can enrich the connection between couples, providing a secure functioning relationship and let’s be honest, who doesn’t want that? Romance doesn’t need to be extravagant or expensive, it can be thoughtful and understated, showing the other person how much they impact our lives and how important they are to us. Romance can cause us to feel loved. Being a good role model for your partner this

y a D ’s e Valentin This Valentine’s Day, how about you try something a little different. Instead of showering your significant other with gifts and chocolate, how about spending some time trying to be the healthiest version of yourself, and setting a good example for your partner to do the same, suggests Vision Personal Training’s Jack Smith. They say you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with. Hang out with people that drink, and you will drink more, hang out with a group of smokers and the likelihood that you become a smoker goes through the roof. So, this Valentine’s Day, why not spend time improving yourself and partner! The health implications of being overweight are grave, and they affect not only life longevity but also health longevity,

emotional wellbeing and the effects of being obese affect generations. For your own sake and that of your children and their children, you MUST step up and lead by example! How does leading by example look? We all have many things going on in our lives. Work, relationships, stress, commitments, and often your health and that of your family take a back seat. Until you make it a priority in your life, change will be hard to come by and at best, temporary. If you have been making poor food choices for you and your family, turning it around is definitely harder, but it is possible. For starters, you need to lead by example for a few months! Don’t expect to force change on kids straight away; they will resist. So, the first step is for you to change; they will get curious and start to ask questions. Then you can educate them on why you are doing what you are doing and eventually they will begin to make better decisions. So, what leads to good outcomes? Let’s have a look at habits. 28

Food planning and preparation. Every weekend, take some time to plan out what you are going to include in each meal for the week. Plan to get a good serve of protein in each meal, cut down on low nutrient carbs, and make dinner a colourful salad or veggies with a big serve of protein each night. Make exercise a daily habit. Even just taking a walk of an evening with the whole family rather than watching TV will have a significant impact. Maybe it doesn’t burn a ton of calories, but it sends the message the exercise matters. Every weekend, find something to do that forces you to get active. The kids might complain at first, but they will go on to value the time together.

Taking city dollars to the country to support

Gold Coasters teamed up with Brisbanites last month to onboard seven buses, en route to the Southern Downs region for a day of Christmas shopping, at last month’s Merry Muster. Event founder, Kristin Bonner, shares her story with Get it Editor, Nicole Madigan. The aim of the event was simple, bring the city dollar to regional Queensland, following the catastrophic impact of years of natural disasters, including drought, bushfires and most recently, COVID-19. The 250 Merry Muster attendees spent the day spreading festive cheer to retailers and stallholders in the towns of Warwick and Stanthorpe at the inaugural Merry Muster. The event is premised on the notion of city folk taking their dollars, which would otherwise be spent in the big smoke, and instead, supporting bush businesses doing it tough. Merry Muster founder Kristin Bonner said the idea came from a personal desire to do

something tangible for those most affected by major events such as COVID-19, drought, bushfires and floods. “Coming from the country, I felt helpless at how cruel the drought especially has been, and the toll it continues to take on regional communities,” she says. “Simply crying at images on the TV was not going to help, so I came up with a simple idea - why don’t we take our Christmas shopping dollars and spend them out in an area that desperately needs some love, instead of here in the city? And so, The Merry Muster was born.” The next step was to arrange purpose-built markets in both towns, providing locals with a dedicated platform to sell their wares, along with main street shops. Guests were encouraged to bring both baskets and eskies to load up on meat, fresh produce, cheese, wine, homemade crafts, clothing and jewellery ahead of Christmas. They returned to the city having spent an average of $350 each, injecting more than $114,000 into the region during the one-day trip.

31

The Muster group also distributed over 35 cubic square metres of donated goods, and $7000 in cash donations to local charities in each area. One such charity was Kangaroo Kapers Wildlife, which plays a vital role in treating, rehabilitating and releasing sick and injured wildlife. “The last 12 months have been very challenging, with the number of animals coming into care increasing significantly,” says Director Kylie Hibberd. “We are so thankful to the Merry Muster for their donation of 560 items.” Merry guests also enjoyed a gourmet lunch at Ballandean Estate, before heading home with overflowing baskets, new friends and smiling faces. Those who missed the bus but still want to show their support can do so by donating directly to the Granite Belt Water Relief Fund, Share the Dignity or simply shopping in the area.

The 7 essential practices for overcoming

insecurity

By Jaemin Frazer

Insecurity is a tricky subject to tackle head on. Most people are either insecure about being insecure, or unaware of their insecurity. However, the fear of not being good enough is a universal one, shared by almost every human being.

these opinions in the first place. We created the insecurity problem, and we are the only one who can fix it. We already are 100 per cent responsible. We are not the actor in the story of our lives, we are the storyteller.

one who is not going to get in the way. If you seek help from someone who cares about you, they can’t help but try to fix you. You need to find someone who has no vested interest or agenda other than to serve you to get more of what you want.

3. Stack the pain

6. Be the hero

Rather than simply masking, medicating or managing our fears, the insecurity problem can be solved. There are seven essential practices that can lead you towards a life unhindered by self-limiting beliefs, enabling you to show up at your best where it matters most instead.

Pain is designed to move us away from danger toward safety. It is an essential part of the motivation for all change work. Stacking the pain involves running an accurate cost assessment of all the ways unresolved insecurity is ruining your life. This creates a threshold moment where the pain of change becomes less than the pain of staying the same.

Sooner or later you have to face the thing you fear most about yourself and discover if it is true. You either die or come out the other side reborn having dismantled the fear for good.

1. Step into the light

4. Develop a compelling life vision

Own that you are not actually afraid of failure or rejection, but the personal implications of these things, being perceived as somehow lacking, inadequate or not enough. The key here is to see that the deepest fear is always your own opinion of yourself. That is exactly why this process is so exciting. Opinions can be changed. Especially when they’re your own.

It is essential to not just be moving away from something, but to also be certain about what you are moving towards instead. The moment someone loses sight of this, overcoming insecurity becomes way too hard.

7. Rewrite the story Finally, once the fear has been faced and old stories fully deconstructed, the slate is now clean for you to write a new script to live out of. Until the old stories have been dismantled all the way back to the start, the prevailing negative narratives will continue to take over the moment you get tired, stressed or anxious.
