LETTER FROM

Nicole Editor

Ever since I was a little girl, I knew exactly what I wanted to be when I grew up. Actually, there were many things I wanted to be, often conflicting and regularly changing. But one particular ambition always stood out. More than my aspirations of love and romance, education and career, there remained one constant: I wanted to be a mother. Or rather, I was going to be one. Having children was something I simply expected, but it wasn’t the simple process I’d envisaged. Each month, anticipation turned to anxiety and eventually, despair, as the realisation that fertility issues may be to blame, set in. IVF was the only option offered. And so, the journey began. In the end, IVF gave me two of my five children – one was a surprise natural conception, and the other two the result of my beautiful blended family.

OPEN 7 DAYS | 9:30AM TO 5PM 32 Masthead Way, The Marine Village, Sanctuary Cove • Ph 5577 8981

The journey was a difficult one though, as anyone who has experienced fertility issues will attest. And the light at the end of the tunnel doesn’t always involve conception. But there can still be light, as Bernadette Andrews shares in our feature story, Embracing Otherhood. Bernadette shares her heartbreaking – and heartwarming - story of infertility, and the beautiful light she found at the end of a very long tunnel. Life doesn’t always go as planned. So, while it’s important to set goals and keep our eyes on the prize, so to speak, it’s more important to enjoy the process. Don’t wait ‘until’ to be happy. The journey is the destination.

The time is now.

T

here are several ways I manage to find luxury without selling a kidney. My ALL-time favorite is op-shopping. I bloody love op-shopping. I know what you’re thinking, crusty clothes, smelling of mothballs in outdated styles sold by geriatrics in dark overfilled shops. You could not be further from the truth……. Well maybe there is the occasional smell of mothballs. One of my recent purchases (from an Op Shop in Robina) is a stunning pair of genuine Givenchy kitten heels for $10!!! Now that is luxe for less. Let me fill you in on my Op Shop rules: 1.

It must fit perfectly (I can sew- but what happens is I plan to alter something, never get around to it and end up re-donating the article to the Op Shop 18th months later!)

2.

It must be a good brand. (There is no point spending $10 on something from Valley Girl if it was only $12 to start with- another hint- most Op shops have no ideaso you’ll find Target on the ‘designer’ rack and Carla Zampatti amongst the general stuff)

3.

It must be good fabric. (Linen, silk, wool, thick, soft cotton- none of the cheap crap that will not last and is probably already ruined by the one wash the previous owner gave it)

4.

Don’t forget to look in the ‘treasure’. (The un-initiated may not know that most Op Shops have a cabinet, usually near the front of the shop, where they keep the jewellery and sparkly things. This will contain 99% revolting costume jewellery fit for nothing but a toddlers toy box. But…. Amongst this I have found diamonds and 18ct gold and magnificent solid silver and pearls- it’s a real-life treasure hunt and so incredibly exciting when you find awesome loot).

If you really can’t bring yourself to set foot in an Op Shop (you’re crazy) but you can also have a champagne and swap party. Everyone brings 10 things they have loved but no longer love, or don’t fit or just need to never wear again. Everyone also brings champagne and you sit around chatting and trying on clothes and go home with things that will be your new favourites and cost you nothing! Both of these ‘luxe for less’ methods mean that you can experiment with style and colour in a way that you never would if you had to pay full price. The Gold Coast has some really amazing Op Shops and they raise money for good causes. So, if you’ve never been, save some money, find some treasure and get out there and pop your Op Shop cherry!

Conflict - Divorce - Heartache How to navigate loss. to avoid or navigate the situation when it presents itself again.

and working on conflict management rather than winning an argument.

One of the easiest ‘repeat’ offending scenarios in life is finding ourselves caught in the middle of conflict, when conversation and communication breaks down, and finding ourselves doing it, time and time again.

Don’t take words on their face value alone.

’So how could you have avoided this from happening? ‘ First step: Reach out and ask for help

Dee Hardy Shifting Tides Counselling Meet our new columnist, Shifting Tides Counsellor Dee Hardy . Each month, Dee will share her insights and answer your most common questions about mental health and wellbeing. Are you going through challenging times right now? Are you looking down the barrel of that rabbit hole and seeing the knock-on effect in other areas of your life with your pain, anger, loss, overwhelm? What you’re experiencing might be happening to you as an individual, but in reality, it’s likely affecting family groups, friendships and workplaces. There’s always a lot at stake and we must keep life moving forward. It doesn’t stop because there’s a crisis in our piece of the world. Even though your first reaction might be to say to yourself ‘I so wish this wouldn’t affect me,’ it does, and it will, but we can find strategies to guide us through these life challenges so that you can move forward. Do you have: •

Conflict at home

Challenges at your workplace with communication

Amongst friends, family and other people in our lives - is there resistance, stonewalling, gaslighting or just that feeling that things are off kilter?

Maybe you are managing a ‘repeat offence’ or in simple terms, finding yourself in the same situation, conflict or drama and realised that you may not have learned the lesson or developed the skills

GET IT August 2022

If you or a loved one find yourself in the heady space of emotional conflict and the way forward seems bleak or fuzzy, encourage conversation. Mediating conflict is a skill and is necessary to find that platform for change. Seeking the advice of a counsellor experienced in conflict resolution is critical to support you through challenging conversations. They will help you work on simple, real and honest strategies to unlock the ‘knot’ that is holding you back from moving forward.

Arguments are rarely about the one item you are yelling about – they are sometimes so deep seeded that the real issues at hand have been buried or lost along the way and we lose sight of what it is that is causing so much grief. Know there is support out there, real life and practical strategies that ‘skill’ you up so life can offer you the path of least resistance. So today, take a moment to slow things down – take that walk that you may have overlooked recently; sip your coffee without technology in hand and really appreciate the aroma, flavour and enjoy just being in the moment.

Here are some strategies to start you on your journey:

Rather than doing everything at once, do one thing in fullness and move to the next thing and do that in fullness…. the art of compartmentalisation can decrease stress and overwhelm, giving you that sense of achievement and contentment so that your ‘tank’ stays full, and doesn’t run dry.

Looking forward to chatting next time.

Ask yourself, ’Is this situation/ circumstance/ scenario good for me?’

Place your right hand on your heart, feel that question and sit with it for a moment, and take the time to feel your response… this allows you to engage with you

Breath before you react

Most people in conflict wait for their turn to speak…in effect, listening to what the other person is saying, with the sole intent of waiting to respond….if you breath slowly, slow everything down, you take pressure off your nervous system and slow down the ‘fight or flight’ responses, giving you space and time to consider what you have heard and make the response come from a space of constructive conversation not defensive mode

If we teach ourselves to listen with the intent to understand, we can look beyond the ‘words’ said in the heat of the moment and listen to the message instead. Understand

Embracing

‘Otherhood’ For many women, steps to having children is a natural and desired progression, so what happens when life doesn’t match up with your plans? Bernadette Andrews, owner and founder of Embrace Otherhood, shares with us her experience with infertility, letting go of shame and finding satisfaction and happiness with a new perspective.

GET IT August 2022

14

1. What is ‘Otherhood’ and how did you come up with this term? I’d been struggling silently with infertility treatments for years and was trying to find connection, but I didn’t know where I fit in. I couldn’t join the mother’s group or the childless by choice group. Otherhood came to me towards the end of doing fertility treatments, when I started thinking about all the other possibilities I do have in my life and the term otherhood felt positive and exciting.

2. Can you share with us a bit about your own infertility journey? My husband and I started trying for a baby when I was 24, just after we bought our first home - we thought it was the standard next step in life. However, it never happened, not even once. We never got to experience the joy in seeing our positive pregnancy test. We tried everything for the next 10 years, including 7 rounds of IVF. After this time we gradually stopped trying after our last IVF round when I was turning 37. Upon turning 40 my excitement for a baby had completely gone, and I became more excited about all the other things we could do with our life.

3. Tell us about your book, ‘How To Stay Sane on the Baby Making Train’. I got the idea to write my book out of frustration, at being asked “So, do you have kids?” This question is very common, but if you’ve gone through infertility it’s hard to answer this quickly without coming across that you chose not to have children. I wanted to share all the things we tried on our journey, with tips I learnt along the way to help others who are going through infertility and are struggling in silence. I wanted to share that even with doing IVF you don’t always end up with the baby, and I want people to know that you have purpose regardless of whether you are a parent or not.

4. What is a key piece of advice you have for women who are facing the reality that they may not end up with the pregnancy and baby they hoped for? Know that you gave it your all, therefore don’t have any regrets that you didn’t try. Let go of any shame you may be feeling that you couldn’t conceive, sometimes it just doesn’t happen. As uncomfortable as this may sound, really feel your feelings. Know that there are many women who haven’t become mothers, seek them out and connect.

5. Do you feel there is too strong of a narrative that children = satisfaction and happiness? Definitely! My husband and I both grew up in the traditional family unit, where it was expected that you have children and that you do everything for your children, as that was your purpose in life. However I now believe that real life satisfaction is doing the best you can with your life, practicing selfcare, being kind to yourself and others and giving back in whatever way you can.

6. What does life look like for you today? My relationship with my husband is strong and we have fun and don’t take things too seriously. Because we’ve been through the many ups and downs of infertility, life now feels great as we’re not trying to push something that just didn’t work for us. We have our adult niece living with us so that she can save for her own house deposit, which is nice to be able to see her growth in adulthood. I’m excited to continue sharing awareness for otherhood, and am about to write a new book which will be a collection of stories from other women who are embracing otherhood.

Infertility Insights Expert advice from Dr Michael Flynn, Fertility Specialist with Queensland Fertility Group. 1. How do you know when it’s the right time to stop or pause treatments? Everyone has individual expectations and circumstances - there have been times when I personally would not have progressed further, but the patient has chosen to continue, and some women eventually do get pregnant. It is very important to always be up front with what I think chances are, so that couples make an informed decision.

2. What other support should women seek when coming to terms with the possibility that they may not have children? At Queensland Fertility Group we offer counselling support to all of our patients at no additional cost. Each person has individual ways of coming to terms. Experienced counsellors, nursing staff and having a trusted fertility specialist who can guide them through this are invaluable, but this is never easy.

3. How common is it that women who seek treatment are unsuccessful in having a child? Success varies with age, and so it is more common to see this difficult time with women who have delayed childbearing – whether due to lifestyle, work or perhaps they found their special someone a little later in life. Even at its most successful (women in their 20’s), IVF rates approach 60% so there is never a time when you can guarantee pregnancy.

4. How do you balance encouraging a hopefulness with reality?

Bernadette Andrews

15

The best thing I can do for my patients is to be truthful and realistic, and never give false hope. Then the patient is in charge and making all the decisions. No matter how much you prepare, it is always a big blow if this time the test is negative. So surround yourself with support and care from friends, family, and your trusted fertility team.

GET IT I PROFILE

An entrepreneur from a young age, Kat Creasey runs not one but two businesses, as well as wearing multiple other (vintage) hats in her career. Get It Magazine’s Holly Bartter sits down with Kat to dive into her love of all things vintage, managing festivals and farms, and having it all. Dividing her time between Olive View Estate in Boonah and her events business, Only Good Times Co, vintage queen Kat Creasey has built a life based around her passions, which she started developing at a young age. “My Dad has been restoring classic cars and building hot rods since he was a teenager and his passion rubbed off on me. I have owned a lot of classic cars and caravans over the years and now just have my one pride and joy, a 1964 Ford Falcon lovingly known as the ‘Tiki Wagon’,” Kat tells me. From an affinity for classic cars came an appreciation for vintage makeup, hair and fashion which, Kat shares, wasn’t something she expected. “I have always been somewhat of a tomboy that never knew anything about hair and makeup until a makeup artist did the rockabilly style look on me for the first time and I was hooked.” “From then on, I would spend hours reading old Women’s Day magazines and learning how to recreate these looks. I had finally found a look that complimented my red hair and fair skin!” Her presence, personality and drive shine through her festival-hosting business, “mainly centred around food trucks that are able to pop up at any location,” she tells me. “We move the events around each weekend to a new location and travel as far south as Yamba and as far north as Hervey Bay. The classic car element was an easy fit, so we could host two events in one.”

“I started making and selling jewellery, and I left high school at age 16 to pursue this. I went to fashion design school where I learnt business, marketing and how to sell online,” Kat recalls, “A light bulb went off where I knew I could use my skills to create my own vintage style jewellery brand - from there ‘My Little Rockabilly’ was born. Thousands of women would log onto Myspace and Facebook to purchase one-off pieces.” When she isn’t running a festival, Kat spends her time at Olive View Estate, her home and a venue which hosts guests, events and weddings, which for Kat, is the realisation of a lifelong goal.

Living authentically in every way, Kat champions the notion of doing what defines you without apology. Before we close out our interview, she tells me, “I worked in a council event job for 6 months and I wasn’t allowed to have anything of color in my office, I wasn’t allowed to dress like I do and I really felt like my creativity dwindled during this time,” she says, “Your mental state of feeling restricted really affects success and creativity. Don’t ever let someone tell you how to be YOU!”

“Olive View is my absolute dream. I always wanted to purchase a property with my family where we could grow our own food in rich fertile soil, breathe clean air, have stunnings views and live in a community of inspiring, creative people,” Kat explains, “When we were ready to move from the Gold Coast, we had our eyes set on The Scenic Rim. We have spent the last 2 years reviving the farm and adding our love of vintage styling to the gardens and making it our own.” With lots of demands on her time, Kat is thankful for the loved ones around her that help her balance such a full life. “I have an amazing family and partner that supports my endeavors. Living together and owning the farm together has its challenges but we couldn’t do what we do without the support of each other.”

“DON’T EVER LET SOMEONE TELL YOU HOW TO BE YOU!” Creating memorable in-person experiences has become something of Kat’s signature, with thousands turning out for her events to check out the cars and delicious street food - and where Kat goes, stallholders follow. “I am approached by clubs, pubs, councils and tourism bodies to bring my pop up event to their town,” Kat explains, “the market stall holders are so loyal to me, some have been with me for 10 plus years - we sometimes refer to our traveling show as a circus - one big happy family.” Kat’s skills in making things happen echo back to her young years, where she started her very first business at just age 12. 19

Brazilian beauty buzz comes to the Gold Coast

In a luxe clinic on Main Beach, Juliana Medina’s clients are discovering the secrets of a Brazilian detoxing massage therapy.

While Juliana treats younger men and women regularly, she is keen to encourage mature locals to visit the clinic. “More mature people, especially those with lymphoedema, can find benefits from my massage. I also see clients post-surgery who need relief from various symptoms,” she said.

A young entrepreneur, Juliana opened Australia’s first dedicated clinic for lymphatic drainage massage on the Gold Coast last year.

“It doesn’t matter how big or small the results are that they’re trying to achieve, they are always so grateful which drives me to continuously look at ways to develop our treatments.”

Lymphatic drainage is the beauty buzz of 2022 on social media as everyone from models to actors and influencers began sculpting their bodies with the Brazilian massage and integrating it as part of their health and beauty regime.

Juliana has continued to refine the traditional Brazilian technique and has developed her own signature massage which starts with a magnesium body wrap and an infrared sauna.

Juliana, who came to the Gold Coast in 2016 to attend Bond University, was a physiotherapist in Brazil and she quickly saw the potential to use her qualifications and experience with the technique.

“Getting the infrared sauna before your lymphatic drainage massage means you are relaxed and your body will be warm and receptive. The detoxification process will already have begun and cortisol levels and blood pressure will have already come down.”

“Most people have heard about lymphatic drainage massage through social media and they want to see aesthetic benefits because it reduces bloating and fluid retention,” she said.

She says clients can’t believe the transformation: “During the massage, I stop so they can see the difference and one side will be slimmer and one puffy and people usually are blown away at the difference and how much excess fluid can be removed.”

“Through a special light massage, we detox and de-stress by stimulating the lymph nodes to encourage drainage and remove toxins naturally from the body.

Appointments can be made directly with Lymph4You and there is no requirement to commit for a course.

“They might come to us first for aesthetic reasons because they have heard about the body sculpting benefits, but they keep coming back because of the overall health benefits. It can completely change someone’s life.

“Everyone client is different, and we leave it up to you to decide how often you need treatment,” Juliana said. For appointments and more information: www.lymphforyou.com

“Patients and clients come to me from all backgrounds and ages and with all kinds of stresses, whether they are suffering from IBS, fluid retention, feeling lethargic, have skin problems or have hormonal issues.”

Get rid of your

COVID stress face

and freshen up for

g in r Sp

Dr Vivek Eranki

According to Dr Eranki, CEO of multi award winning national Cosmetique Cosmetic Clinics, while there is no substitute for a good diet, exercise and a good skin management regime, there are some things you can do cosmetically to help the face look younger and fresher– but you need to start now. “Non-surgical treatments such as injectables are safe and easy to undertake and deliver almost instant results,” Dr Eranki said. Dr Eranki has outlined his top tips on what type of treatments are ideal for brides on their big day.

1. Fat dissolving injections “Fat dissolving injections are an excellent way to freshen up the face and create a fitter and more healthier looking profile. They are administered to reduce the fat under the chin and to help redefine the jaw line,” Dr Eranki said. “We simply map out the fat pocket under the chin, apply a nerve block to ensure a painless procedure and the treatment itself only takes around 10 – 15 minutes in total. “Fat dissolving injections effectively eliminate your double chin without surgery in a matter of weeks. Patients see results very quickly and feel and look younger with a more structured and defined jaw line. “Because the injections permanently

remove the fat cells, fat doesn’t return to the area. This is a very popular treatment for women who want to achieve a nice jaw line and elongated looking neck.”

2. Dermal filler “Dermal fillers are versatile and can be used to enhance your facial features with a completely natural substance that achieves a visibly long-lasting aesthetic result,” Dr Eranki said. “We usually refer to dermal fillers as liquid facelift treatments as they provide almost instant results. Most women undertake dermal filler treatments to augment the cheeks and jaw line. The treatment can be undertaken in a matter of 30 minutes and delivers instant results that continue to improve over time. “The skin looks smooth, uplifted, rejuvenated and more youthful. This is also a popular treatment for brides as it helps to plump up cheeks, remove lines and create a glowing fresh younger look.”

3. Wrinkle relaxers “Wipe away years of lines in an instant. Antiwrinkle injections, also known as wrinkle relaxers, work to stop the formation of wrinkles by temporarily blocking the nerve signals that control muscle movement,” Dr Eranki added. “These injections can be applied in a number of areas around the face to address forehead lines, crow’s feet, frown lines and bunny lines around the hose. The decreased movement in the muscle reduces stress on the skin, giving you a fresher and younger appearance. 22

“Within a matter of days, the face looks refreshed and more supple. The key is to ensure you achieve the right amount of wrinkle relaxers for your big day. You want to look younger and more revitalised while also still looking very natural.”

4. Lip filler “Lip enhancement with injectable fillers is a simple process performed painlessly under a surgical aseptic technique. We anaesthetise the lips and surrounding areas and then enhance the lips so that they are proportional to the rest of the face. The procedure only takes 30 minutes in total. “Using premium and ultra premium lip fillers, create naturally plump looking lips that deliver enhanced definition and a younger appearance.

5. Brow lift “A brow lift is an extremely popular treatment and delivers significant improvements to the youthful look of the face. It works by changing the tension of the muscle that closes the eye, creating a natural lifting effect. The eyes look brighter and the face looks considerably younger,” Dr Eranki explained. “Most women opt for a brow that is both full and arched. While ageing is part of natural life, we do not enjoy looking old, so this procedure can really help you tighten up the eye area, which is one of the first places in your face to show the signs of ageing. With just a few subtle improvements, a more youthful and relaxed looking face can be created.”

are getting super specialised exercises that only a professional could give you. If you are paying for a result, it is important to work out what exactly what that is, and what is going to get you that result. If you think all it takes is 30 minutes or an hour of exercise here or there to get a result you are not seeing the whole picture. What you do in your week when you are not working out (the other 167 hours) has a massive influence over your result. A few things your trainer should be doing:

Are Personal Trainers worth it? It is amazing how many people call around to different fitness businesses trying to find out prices so they can compare them. Taking care of your body and your health shouldn’t be a luxury, it should be something you do no matter what. But unfortunately, that isn’t the reality for most Australians. What really upsets me more than anything when I ask new people if they are currently exercising is their common response: “no… but I have a gym membership!” The issue I have with gym memberships is if you join for 12 months there are four possible outcomes: 1.

2.

3.

You get lots of use out of the gym and the $1000 you spent gave you great value. You use the gym here and there (the average is about 20 workouts over the year). Do the maths… you paid $50 a workout! You can get a Personal Trainer for that. You use the gym hard core for the first two weeks, get distracted/ unmotivated/cold/intimidated by the singlet crowd, and you don’t use it for the other 50 weeks of the year. That’s $100 per workout!

4.

5.

You join the gym, get a personal trainer, prepay for 10 sessions… get so sore and busted from your first workout that you would rather visit your dentist for a wisdom tooth extraction than see that sadistic bastard with the tight buns and perfect hair who tortured you for enjoyment ever again! You just spent $750 a session! I know I said four, but every now and then people have joined a gym and prior to the end of their 12 months, the gym closes its doors and packs up shop and you are left with a membership to a carpark.

Some people get great use out of their gym membership (on average about 30 per cent of the members), however four of these five outcomes are bad… and the trouble is, you might have saved $50 by not going to a more boutique and high service facility but it has cost you even more in the end. And that’s not to mention what you get out of it. Are you paying for a workout or a result? When it comes to deciding where you will go it is important to decide what you want to get out of joining a gym/personal training studio. Are you paying for an exercise session? I think if you are, the workout needs to be much higher quality than what you could ever do on your own or that you

23

1.

Measuring. If you aren’t actually tracking and measuring results, it is impossible to see if you are making progress. Feeling better and looser clothes are great, but your trainer should be able to give you some hard evidence that what you are doing with them is working.

2.

You should be following a planned out program that is repeatable. An old trick average trainers use to confuse you is variety. If you never do the same workout how do you know you have improved? It is definitely advisable to change up your workouts but changing the session every week is the easiest way to hide the lack of results. I recommend changing the workout monthly, that way you have four weeks to build on each time.

3.

Helping you keep focused during the week. Awesome trainers set you homework, follow up on your actions, check in on you between sessions, stalk you on Facebook (anything to keep you on track!) and ask you about your week. We have an amazing app that tracks what you are doing with your food and exercise and makes it super easy to get results, all you have to do is open the app and follow todays program!

4.

Guarantee your results! If your trainer sits down with you and you set a goal to lose 9 kilos over the next 9 weeks, then she gives you the list of what to do and designs your workout plan, measures where you are at and says “if you follow this plan you will succeed”, and then you follow that plan diligently and only lose 4 kilos… we believe they should give your money back.

You paid for their advice; they didn’t deliver… easy. So next time you are making a decision about your health and wellbeing, remember… the cheapest often can be the nastiest and may result in being the most expensive tag on your key chain.

GET IT I TRAVEL

With international travel back on the agenda, many Australians are looking towards to getting back to their favourite island destinations. It’s welcome news for Kelly Sturgeon who’s been forced to ride out the challenges of Covid-19. The former Gold Coast resident has been living in Bali since 2010, where she took over the reigns of Bisma Cottages. With Bali opening up for tourism in March, she’s things are slowly getting back to normal for Kelly, who says there’s no better time to visit Bali, than right now.

green rice fields, village atmosphere and culture were so different to Seminyak, so from then on, Ubud became a regular weekend break.

“I have always loved Bali – the weather, the people, the more relaxed lifestyle, the creative freedom, and the value for money.

“The business had enough money to survive for one year and from then it was my personal savings. I also had to give up my villa and live onsite.”

After having worked in the tourism my whole life, I tried a corporate job in 2007. During these two years my annual Bali holiday was the savior to my work/life balance. During one of these holidays, I decided I had to work out a way to live in Bali. It wasn’t easy as there were very few jobs for expats then. Through persistence and networking, I made it happen, and in 2010 I moved to Bali and returned to working in the tourism industry that I truly love.” A life in Ubud “When I first moved to Bali, I lived and worked in Seminyak and really didn’t know much about Ubud. “I had won a voucher at a charity auction for a Ubud hotel stay and as it was about to expire, I booked a weekend away. Ubud’s

“One of my life plans was to work part time and have a small business, so when I met the owners of Bisma Cottages and they needed someone to take over, it was the perfect fit. “The property is six rooms, four are traditional Indonesian wooden style cottages called Joglos. The other two are larger, more modern and have a rice field view. It’s a peaceful little oasis but within walking distance of the town centre.”

“More long-stay visitors are coming now due to the flexibility that is being offered by companies, this is good as these people are contributing to the economy for a longer period. At Bisma Cottages we now have a combination of guests that stay for a few nights and others that are staying for a month. “The opening for tourism was also timely as June, July and August are Bali’s high season and we really need a good high season this year to start to get back on track.”

Surviving the pandemic

No better time than now “Bali opened for tourism is March and week by week more and more travellers are returning. “Bali was always beautiful but now that Mother Nature has had a break for two years, the nature is even more spectacular. 27

GET IT I PROFILE

Making 0% Alcohol 100% Delicious Catie Fry is anything but conventional, utilising her Master Distiller skill set to create nonalcoholic spirits. The founder of Clovendoe Distilling Co., the first female-owned and operated distilling company, sits down with Get It Magazine’s Holly Bartter to chat about her fast-paced life as a business owner and how her products go far beyond Dry July.

3. What are low or zero alcohol spirits?

1. How did you first get into distilling?

4. We’re seeing a trend in people moving on from Dry July to trying to reduce alcohol consumption in their lives more significantly - do you see this upswing in people who are “sober curious”?

I established a rum and gin distillery in Central Queensland with a team of blokes back in 2016. We all came from various backgrounds but shared a love of distilling, and I had a passion for plants and aromatherapy, so I was more interested in botanical infused white spirits like gin and botanical vodkas. It was the research and development of the recipes and experimentation with botanical profiles that interested me the most. The technical aspects of the distilling method was just the next step in the process to reach the end result. So I just watched, listened and learned.

2. Tell us about the gender balance in this industry. It’s still heavily dominated by men particularly in leadership roles and positions at the helm such as the distilling and R&D roles. I am hearing and seeing more women coming into the industry - which is awesome. GET IT August 2022

More often than not in this industry, they are just cleverly marketed non alcoholic beverages that mimic flavors of their alcoholic counterparts. But there are some zero alcohol spirits which are 100% distilled and maintain integrity around their ingredients and crafting of their products, such as ours. Typically a non alcoholic ‘spirit’ needs to contain no more than 0.5% Alc/ Vol. A low alcoholic spirit is more broad and currently there’s no set standard for what constitutes “low” in spirits.

Yeah for sure, I have seen quite a few of my friends do exactly this. A couple of them dipped their toes in the water last July and then found that after the month was through, it had actually disrupted their ‘drinking cycle’. They both said that the urge to drink had significantly decreased for them. That’s a huge part of the reason I created my low alcoholic range too. I have had customers who started on my mid strength low alcohol range in order to ease their way into the non alcoholic range - like a little transitory phase. Clovendoe isn’t a company focused on sobriety, we are more about mindful consumption, inclusion, balance and giving the bird to FOMO when abstaining.

5. What has been the response to your range? 32

I think what most people appreciate about our products are that they’re authentically and traditionally distilled and are produced in small batches by hand. I think if people are cutting out the booze, they are often searching for a healthier alternative to everything they’ve been consuming and doing previously. I think for a lot of consumers, knowing that we are 100% natural with no additives or sugars makes us pretty appealing and unique. The other thing that people have been appreciating is the distinctive flavors between the three infusions we offer - I worked with the origins and complimentary culinary flavor profiles of the botanicals rather than trying to mimic the taste of alcoholic spirits.

6. What does an average day in your life look like? There is no average day when you run your own small business. One day I’m distilling, the next I’m bottling and labeling, a couple of hours later I’m juggling emails while in a Zoom meeting. Another day I’m running to events and tastings, attending sales meetings, foraging and prepping botanicals next minute, working on new virgin cocktail recipes …the list is endless. Some days I want to throw it all in, other days I wouldn’t give it up for anything. Coupled with young kids and my adult ADHD, it’s quite the ride.

7. What’s next on the horizon for your brand? I think it’s time for a fun and exciting collaboration with another aligned and passionate brand. And a new product of course. It’s just growing its wings…watch this space.
