RELAX & INDULGE At Chevron renaissanCe

From the editor SARAH BLINCO

Well, we did it! We broke the first rule of entertainment: never work with children or animals; and it was amazing! Missy Robinson is responsible for co-ordinating and managing our fantastic shoots each month, and Dan Molloy snaps the gorgeous photos. The creative team haven’t been informed yet, but we’ve lined up a kindergarten for them to work with next month. Kidding! Back to the puppies though. Aren’t they just ADORABLE!? Sadly we weren’t allowed to steal them away at home time (our partners are extremely grateful on that front), because these little guys are training with the wonderful organisation, Seeing Eye Dogs Australia (seda.visionaustralia.org). Please take a look at Facebook.com/Get.it.mag for exclusive behind-thescenes video footage from this unique shoot.

I love puppies; budgeting and tax, not so much (although I must throw in that I do actually adore my accountant at Palm Beach)! To make the transition from one tax year to another a little easier, we’ve compiled a few interesting, useful and inspiring features to get you moving into the second half of 2013. Our mate, Budget Bitch (aka Carmel McCartin), is back again this June with critical advice on how to get your spending in check. We’ve also investigated how the Gold Coast’s professional business development projects really are on the rise, and it seems to be local ladies leading the charge. There’s a new regular feature too, Nerd Girl, as well as suggestions on motivating books and APPs you might like to keep close this month.

Chemsave Pharmacy Clio Cosmetics endota spa exceptional Dental Fox hair & Body herbal Massage Medical Centre skyline health & skin Clinic

As always, we’d love to hear your feedback, suggestions, story ideas and favourite things about the Gold Coast, so please feel free to track the team down on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube ... we’re all over the place (in a social media sense, of course). Have a great month, and enjoy this issue of Get it. May the ATO be kind, and the Tax Return Force be with you.

FASHION PROFILE with Missy Robinson

GET Undressed Missy Robinson chats to Roslyn Gleave, designer behind lounge and sleepwear label, Deshabille, about juggling motherhood and running a business

Who and what is behind Deshabille? I started Deshabillé in May 2005 when I was pregnant with my son, Finn. I worked from the front room of my house! Since then we have moved into a warehouse / office space and I now have a team of four people and several amazing interns that make everything happen. What does Deshabille mean and where did the concept come from? Deshabillé is French for, ‘to be partially or casually dressed’ or ‘to undress’. I thought the name was perfect for a sophisticated lounge and sleepwear brand. The concept came from what I could see as a gap in the market for more fashion forward lounge and sleepwear that could be worn beyond the front door. I loved the idea of using really beautiful stylish prints on sleepwear moving away from the traditional prints available in the market. What has been the biggest challenge you’ve faced being a mum and having to juggle the business and home-life? Probably life balance. I think having your own business means you make a lot of sacrifices to pursue something you are really passionate about. You miss out on a lot of things because you are working and I generally work a lot at night when I have time to myself. The flip-side is the flexibility when you really need it. There are pros and cons. What has growth been like for Deshabille over the past seven years and what do you see for the future for the label? I started my business not long before the GFC hit − so just as I was starting to grow, the economy took a massive slide. It was incredibly tough, but somehow I survived and it taught me to be really savvy. As hard as it was I am actually grateful I had to scrutinise everything. It forced June 2013

me to constantly re-look at how we were doing things, which has really helped with our growth. My original concept was to just have an online business − but I was too early, so I pursued the wholesale demand that was there. Now things are shifting to more online with the growth of online shopping. We are focusing on improving design, streamlining our systems, perfecting quality / customer service and growing the business internationally. Deshabille is involved in charity work for Breast Cancer awareness, tell us more about that? We have collaborated with an amazing Breast Cancer support group called Pink Hope. Krystal Barter the founder lives locally to Deshabillé and works with us on designing the Pink Hope sleepwear, which has been incredibly successful. We donate 50 per cent of profits to Pink Hope. I feel really honored to be working with such a wonderful group that provides support to women at high risk of breast cancer. What was your aim when creating Deshabille? To create luxurious lounge and sleepwear at a reasonable price that every woman could feel amazing in when relaxing at home. What has been the biggest highlight to date? I would have to say working with Pink Hope. To do something you really love and to be able to help people in need is incredibly satisfying. Where is Deshabille stocked? We sell online at deshabille.com.au and are stocked in around 170 boutiques across Australia and internationally in New Zealand, Canada, USA, Japan, The Netherlands. deshabille.com.au 10

WOMEN IN BUSINESS

MEN NEED NOT APPLY

Kelly Warne

Brand and Marketing Manager LeGassick

Tammie Albe

Communications Mana Broadbeach Alliance

The Gold Coast has long been synonymous with youth partying, high crime and bikini-clad meter maids. But, thankfully, it seems we’re pulling away from this image and moving toward a city to be proud of, one safely capable of holding its own on the world stage. Chloe Warne discovers it’s local women who are zealously working to bring that future home. he Gold Coast is undergoing an impressive transformation. Although fits of rage are often induced in response to current light rail construction, the Rapid Transit project is a major player in our new and improved coastline. The metamorphosis of Robina Town Centre and impending upgrade of Pacific Fair are generating renewed interest in pleasure shopping. I’m almost certain many women are more than happy to do their bit in aiding local economy (especially during a Country Road ‘spend and save’ sale.) Probably most beneficial to boosting recognition and credibility, we’re the host city for the 2018 Commonwealth Games − an event involving 71 countries and to be televised to 1.5 billion people. It’s quite the talking point. In short, the Gold Coast is growing up. The city’s shedding its awkward puberty blues and becoming a sexy and on-trend adult. And it’s the revitalisation of Gold Coast businesses, and the women behind them, that’s helping it along. Delving deeper into this burgeoning renovation, it’s clear there are iconic brands and businesses that are moulding a more sophisticated image of quality and permanency for the Gold Coast. This city holds a delicate balance of transitory and established occupants. For decades the Gold Coast has been, and continues to be, a popular tourist destination, but there’s June 2013

also those who have lived here their entire lives. Because of this, local companies have needed to create an atmosphere that caters to a two-pronged society − an atmosphere that refuses to become tired. These companies and the businesswomen behind them are the backbone of our increasingly sophisticated cosmopolitan. Kelly Warne is the Brand and Marketing Manager for LeGassick, one of the Gold Coast’s leading diamond specialists. Kelly admits it’s a competitive market, especially as luxury goods fall much easier into the ‘want’ rather than ‘need’ column. LeGassick has built an opulent reputation recognisable to both international clients and Gold Coast residents alike. Kelly says, “To hear that people have seen an ad or read something I’ve produced online and it’s moved them enough to visit a store; well that is just such a huge compliment. When people comment that they can see the brand building momentum, it really feels very rewarding”. Being a local, diamond-obsessed female certainly helps Kelly to project the type of brand that Gold Coast women will not only covet, but also trust. “I know that the work I produce for LeGassick comes from a genuine place. When building campaigns, I consider what appeals to me and why”. While Kelly admits being a woman in business isn’t always easy, her advice to others is to not let difficulty stand in the 12

way of anything. “Know and accept that not everyone will like you, your ideas or your work. Then remember that it doesn’t matter. Have confidence in your vision and decisions and know that you’re the expert in that particular field and that people will always have opinions,” she says. While diamond purchases undoubtedly help to keep our economy afloat, everyone needs a worthy event in which to show them off. Introducing, Tammie Albert, Communications Manager at Broadbeach Alliance, a council entity that markets and manages the Broadbeach precinct to both locals and tourists producing events such as Blues on Broadbeach Music Festival and Opera in the Park. Broadbeach is easily one of the Coast’s standout entertainment spots and boasts a rapidly evolving image. Facilitating such events is not an easy feat for a relatively small team, but Tammie admits it’s worth it. She explains, “In my role the most rewarding aspect would be after the long hours spent on an event, standing in the street and seeing the precinct come to life, filled with people enjoying what we have spent many months organising”. Reinforcing the abundance of female power players, Tammie says she hasn’t come across any gender related challenges in her career on the Coast. “I am a big believer that by working hard and professionally, both individually and as a team, you truly can

You need to be open to continuous learning. No matter how long you have done something you will more often than not learn something new every day. achieve anything. I have a number of strong women in my life that have always been influential and my parents taught me that anything is possible as long as you are willing to work for it”. Tammie admits the Gold Coast is developing and adapting, producing more opportunities than ever before, but says it still isn’t an easy ride. “You need to be open to continuous learning. No matter how long you have done something you will more often than not learn something new every day”. In addition to the retail and entertainment sectors, the Gold Coast is well known for it’s prestigious hotels and resorts. Monique Harmer is the General Manager of InterContinental Sanctuary Cove Resort. The Gold Coast is newly introduced to the InterContinental brand, now with a 200-plus team lead by Monique; she says, “The Gold Coast is starting to become much more sophisticated. It’s no longer just a family holiday destination”. Like Kelly and Tammie, Monique admits she’s fortunate to work for an organisation that places an emphasis on equality. She stresses the need to work hard and take risks, as being sure of yourself and your vision is paramount to success. She adds, “Have confidence in your own ability to deliver”. Despite the success of these women, statistics show females still earn less than 10 per cent of the world’s wages but do more than two thirds of the work. But, like the Gold Coast, the gender gap must progress. We’re making headway and firmly in the middle of this city’s revitalisation are local women, professionals and visionaries. Kelly, Tammie and Monique are a small sample of this collective, working to ensure the longevity of the Gold Coast as a brand, a workplace and as a home. Our city is in good hands…and men need not apply. 13

A family losing a parent may find the cost of home help and child care crippling. How many hours do you spend on average doing housework, shopping and looking after your children? The value of this unpaid work is often overlooked especially when families consider their life insurance needs. While death is something nobody likes to think about, the sad fact is around 4,000 Australian parents with dependent children die each year and many more become sidelined as a result of illness or injury i In those tragic cases where Mum wasn’t insured the surviving parent has to deal with the financial challenges of caring for your children and other household tasks, as well as the emotional burden. Unless you’re independently wealthy, the only way to safeguard your family’s financial wellbeing under these circumstances is by adequately insuring both parents. Life’s Facts: l It typically costs close to $600,000 to raise two children from birth to the time they leave university ii l One in four women will be diagnosed with cancer before the age of 75 iii l In Australia, women over 40 years of age have a one in three chance of developing coronary heart diseaseiv Life is full of surprises – good and bad. Insurance will never compensate for the loss of a loved one, or replace their role in the family however it can help reduce the financial burden by providing the capital to ensure your loved ones have choices. Are you concerned about skin Cancer? kin cancer, sun spot analysis, melanomas − you’ve no doubt heard it all before, but why should you have your skin assessed this year? Here’s three good reasons: 1. Sunburn, growing up in Australia and excessive time spent in the sun can lead to skin cancers. 2. Monitoring changes in colour, shape and size of moles and lesions is vital for early detection. 3. If a skin cancer is detected early preventative measures and less invasive surgery and treatment may be suitable. THEARTS

Gallery 1, The Arts Centre Gold Coast June 29 − August 11 he city of Las Vegas holds an unrivalled place in the popular imagination as a city of escapist dreams, spectacular night time illumination and pop-culture entertainment on a grand scale. Architecture did not feature in this equation until 1972 when architects Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown published Learning from Las Vegas. Learning from Las Vegas was based on an extensive research trip the pair undertook with their architecture students of Yale University in 1968. Mapping surveys were conducted through hundreds of photographs and filming the urban landscape from a moving car. Their study of the strip city became one of the most influential and controversial books in 20th Century architecture. Its legacy continues to both inspire and challenge us today. Surprisingly, the luscious colour photographs they captured were never featured in this publication. These images have now been retrieved from the private archive of the architects and capture the Las Vegas of the exuberant sculptural signage, of large cruising Chevrolets, and the incongruous meeting of desert landscape with the intensity of the strip city. Developed by the Museum im Bellpark

LAS VEGAS STUDIO Kriens and the Deutsches Architekturmusuem Frankfurt, this exhibition has been presented to great acclaim in Europe and America and will be shown only here, in the Australian city that unquestionably has the closest relationship in cultural and design terms to Las Vegas. Far away in Melbourne in 1973, then architectural student, John Gollings, saw Learning from Las Vegas and decided to

15

come to the Gold Coast to make his own photographic study of the city in a similar way. These images will also be presented in Gallery 2 in the exhibition, Shooting Surfers Paradise: A Rephotography Project 19732013. The exhibition includes an extensive rephotography study that Gollings has recently completed with these images. Entry is free. More at theartscentregc.com.au

Dracula’s has rolled with the times over the past few decades, and still maintains fans loyal since the earliest performances in the 1980s. Good news for those fans too, because the creative team behind our city’s favourite after-dark entertainment venue, have decided to return to their 18+ clever comedy and sexy burlesque roots. Marc Newman, co-owner, creative director, son and brother of the Dracula’s clan, is excited about the new direction to be showcased from this month. “We’re really rebooting the venue after 32-years of operating, changing the entire experience and format of the night. We feel we’re in the middle of change that’s driven by the digital world and people are being entertained and communicate in different ways. People need more stimulus − more audio-visual. They want a sensory experience. In effect we’ve transformed much of the show into a circus, and a lot of the show takes place above your head! We’re using LED lighting on the walls and stage, with digital projections, and aerial performances too... with up to seven performances in the air at once. At one point the room is filled with ‘snow’! We’re trying to completely bombard the senses. It’s designed to be an overwhelming experience. As we enter 2013 and beyond, we know people want edgier comedy, and a sexier show but presented in a professional, artistic way... In the new show we’re going to be exploring the edge of people’s comfort zones and we’re changing to ‘adults only’. Originally we were, and we’re now reclaiming adult entertainment on the Gold Coast, getting back to comedy and stimulating the senses.” The new format is certainly something to look forward to, if the collective experience of the team behind it is anything to go by. Marc’s parents, Tikki and John, are veteran performers who launched Dracula’s in 1985.They are widely June 2013

Marc Newman

regarded in the entertainment industry as the founders of modern live cabaret in Australia, and Marc told me his father mentioned recently that between all their ventures, he and Tikki have“put on a show every week of the year since 1964”! Growing up, the second generation found their own paths into the business, and now siblings Paul (technical director) and Haydie (stage director), along with Marc’s wife, Jane (head of costuming), happily work together, with the almost 300 other creative, talented staff who make up the contemporary Dracula’s family. From humble beginnings, Dracula’s is now recognised as one of a handful of the Gold Coast’s top attractions. The new entertainment format is a reflection of what the creative team understands their niche fan to desire, and is inspired by research in Las Vegas, New York, popular 16

trends and modern technology. Marc says he’s exceptionally pleased with the new show. “One of my favourite scenes involves a wonderful burlesque act where we have a seven-metre mirror on the stage that’s used for an optical illusion that creates something like a kaleidoscope of nudity. It’s a beautiful act. Sexy. Done artistically... [In recent years] we’ve been diluting content for the sake of the conservative customer, but now we’re doing the opposite of appeasing the complaints. We’ve created a loud, sexy, wild assault on the senses,” he grins. “With the new format, there’s never more than four acts at a time, then there’s a break. It’s similar to the traditional cabaret format. There is drink service all night − press a button at your seat and the staff will come by to take orders. We’re moving away from the theatre restaurant clichés and towards dining, cocktails and ‘bites’ of entertainment that go on until midnight, then the DJ takes over.” Marc adds,“We’re proud of owning evening entertainment on the Gold Coast, and our show is a very different beast to a lot of the touring shows at the moment. We giggle about this though − the burlesque/circus fad that is sweeping the world now is fantastic, but it’s exactly what we were doing originally back in the ‘80s. We’ve never really stopped doing it. All of a sudden what we do is in vogue!... My family and I are passionate theatre goers. We love that feeling of being in the audience, we find it inspiring. We never want to lose contact with that, and we want to provide the same experience for our audiences.” More on the show and Dracula’s extraordinary history at draculas.com.au

the

COLOUR of MONEY

Carmel McCartin, finance expert, entrepreneur behind BudgetBitch.com.au and author of 1001 Budget Tips, shares valuable advice with Get it for our special 2013 money issue are your finances apple or pear shaped? How quickly the year flies! Already it’s June and we’re halfway through 2013. It’s a great time to take stock of the promises we made to ourselves when the year had just started. Are we on track to achieve what we wanted for this year? Are we making a little progress at least? Or have we not started as yet? It’s also at this time of year that thoughts turn to the shape of our finances. Are they shiny and bright like a crisp apple? Or have they gone a little ‘pear-shaped’? It doesn’t seem to be easy to make ends meet at the moment − money doesn’t appear to stretch as far at the supermarket; car, health and household insurances have gone up again; council rates are on the increase and electricity prices have risen more than many of us expected. It feels like our wallets are being attacked from all sides. I guess you don’t need anyone to remind you how tough it is though. The 30th of June marks the end of the current financial year − the time when we gather together all our paperwork and receipts in preparation for filing a tax return. It’s traditionally the time when a lot of financial decisions are made or re-evaluated. If you’re a PAYG employee then it’s also the time of year when you’ll soon be receiving your group certificate and be preparing to submit annual returns to the Taxation Office. There are many ways to get the paperwork done – do it yourself by filling in the paper forms and posting in; or go online

and lodge electronically. There are also tax agents and accountants who are more than willing to do this task for you, and in many cases you can claim their fee as a legitimate deduction next year. Using a tax professional can save you the worry of keeping up with the changing rules on deductions, and in many cases they can also assist with getting you a higher refund than you might have expected if you’re battling with the paperwork yourself. If you’re fortunate enough to be getting one, there’s always the question of what to do with your refund. Is it for spending or saving? Of course, what many people fail to realise is that this money is actually a part of their income. It was just paid to the taxation office in advance, to ensure tax obligations are met. If you are one of those people who

have no debt, then you get to make the decision as to whether you ‘spend’ or ‘save’. Perhaps you consider this money to be a non-conventional form of saving and you have already chosen to purchase something that you’ve been ‘saving for’. You might have enough to get that television you’ve wanted, or perhaps a holiday is in order. But let me ask just one question before you sail off to the shops. If your hot water system dies tomorrow, do you already have enough money saved to replace it, without

Putting some money away for your long-term future is a great idea, but it’s also important to have a back-up plan to pay

needing to borrow the money or use any form of credit? These days it’s no longer considered unfashionable to have a savings account and there are plenty of long and short-term savings options available, if that’s what you’ve decided to do with the money. Putting some money away for your long-term future is a great idea, but it’s also important to have a back-up plan to pay for any unexpected expenses when they occur. Regardless of what you decide, for every person and/or household that has an income, now is the time to assess money and how

for any unexpected expenses when they occur.

regularly uses a credit card as an extension of wages, now is the perfect time to repay that debt. If your credit card balance is cleared every month, a tax refund could be used to help reduce your mortgage. This in turn will lower the interest payable (as it’s calculated daily on the balance of what you owe) and will help to get your property paid off a little faster. Sounds tempting, doesn’t it? Of course, if you’re fortunate enough to be in the small minority of people that 18

you’re managing. If you’ve fallen behind in your savings plan – then now is the time to make amends. If you’re falling behind in paying your bills when they’re due – then now is the time to organise or re-organise your budget. Change supermarket habits and save! If the Macquarie Dictionary defines the word ‘habit’ as,“a constant tendency to act in a certain way”,then I guess in lots of ways we are

all creatures of habit in many areas of our lives. Have you ever stopped and really thought about your own practices − why you do what you do when you do it? Take for example, the regular grocery shopping expedition. How many of us go to the same place, on the same day of the week at roughly the same time? Then once we’re there, take a trolley and start at the same aisle and go the same route to get roughly the same purchases as the time before? Of course, that probably means we also spend the same amount of money each time. Don’t you just hate it when the supermarket decides to shake things up a bit and change the aisles around? No longer is the toothpaste in the same place and the bread has changed places with the cereal. It can be downright confusing and certainly makes this chore less than enjoyable. Have you ever stopped to wonder why they do this? Perhaps it’s all about getting you to 19

actually ‘see’ what they have for sale, in the hope you will buy more. By doing this they’re also trying to shake up more than a few of your shopping practices. Have you ever noticed how the things they’d really like you to buy are at eye-level, and the things they’d like your kids to pester you about buying are at the junior shoppers’ eye-level? While it’s part of a marketing strategy, did you know that if you look above or below your eye level you’re sure to find lots of other bargain-priced goods. For so many of us, the whole ‘hunting and gathering’ of food for our families is based on habit. Rather than trying to change too many habits all in one day, let me ask this question – do you really have to buy your food supplies at the same time every week? Many times I hear the cry, ‘there’ll be nothing in the house to eat’! But, I am yet to come across a house where the cupboards really do look as bare as those of Mrs. Hubbard from that old nursery tale. There is always something in there – even if it is just an old tin of chickpeas left over from the school fete. Recently I met a well-organised family who has a weekly menu and shopping list prepared every week. Not only does this cut down impulse buying at the supermarket but it also means there’s not a lot of stuff lurking in the pantry that will never be eaten. That’s the theory anyway. However, even in this carefully managed kitchen we were able to find enough cans and tins to make dinner for a couple of nights. If you moved your grocery shopping to a different day and time, what do you think might happen? Would a great hole appear in the freezer cabinet and suck you right inside, never to be seen again? If you were to go a day later each time, do you suppose you’d think about what you needed to buy? If you took a list and only bought the items on it, would that make a difference? Supermarket shopping doesn’t have to be a deep and meaningful experience, but neither does it have to be such a mindnumbing habit that we never give a thought to what we’re spending money on. By giving a little more thought to the whys and wherefores of where money is going, I’m sure you’ll discover the whole excursion has just become a huge habit that is eating a humungous hole in your budget. BUSINESS SPECIAL

shaping small biz in 2013 Alex Brophy investigates four trends that will re-shape the way small business is run this year and into the future... he small business landscape is ever evolving as new technologies, markets, challenges and ways of operating constantly force us to rethink the best way to do business. In 2012 the big one was the acceptance of mobile technology into the mainstream as smartphones and tablets gained serious traction. The effect was to link consumers and businesses closer to the online world than ever before, especially with the development of location based services. While this will continue to influence central aspects of how we do business in 2013, we’re tipping a few other trends to get a grip on the small business scene. Funding From The Crowd Crowd funding is still in its relative infancy as a source of small business finance, but with a range of platforms setting up to facilitate the process it’s ready for serious expansion this year. If you’re a bit late to the party, crowd funding is just sourcing finance from a broad public audience, or ‘the crowd’. But instead of paying investors back in coins, businesses offer small gifts like goods, services, or, less commonly, equity in the business. To give you an idea of the magnitude of the movement, industry experts are predicting June 2013

over $6 billion worth of global successful crowd funding projects to get off the ground this year alone. Data Driving Business Decisions The huge amount of information gathered on consumer trends means it is no longer prudent to make business decisions without stats to back it up. And with analytics on everything from sales platforms to social pages so widespread and easily accessible, it’s an area set to gain prevalence on the small business scene. One click to check the age and location of your Facebook group, two clicks to see how people are finding your site, and a simple switch of tabs in sales software to find where your next customers will come from. It’s inexpensive and powerful, and it’s going to drive a huge amount of strategic small business decisions. Outsourcing Exploding There was a time when outsourcing was considered a dirty word, but this is definitely no longer the case. There are so many freelancers out there ready to bid on any task you can imagine, saving small business owners admin and allowing easy access to top shelf talent in any area. It’s been a gradual shift to date, but as more small business owners appreciate the benefits of embracing outsourcing and appreciate that it is very much the future of operations, it will quickly gain momentum. And with this dynamic way of doing 30

business so accessible, small businesses will get smaller, but there will be many more of them. In 2013, outsourcing will explode. Co-Branding Smart small businesses leverage off existing and new relationships to take their brand further, sharing space, marketing capital, advertising initiatives and creative resources. The main incentives are efficiency and expansion. Co-branding saves money, time and opens up new audiences to your products and services. As online and physical networks introduce small businesses more frequently, the opportunities for co-branding will become bigger and more blaring that ever. With this, the smart businesses that embrace co-branding will be the big movers in 2013. Feature courtesy Kochie’s Business Builders. TAX TIME Certified Practicing Accountant, Sarah Wallace, shares her business planning and end-of-financial-year checklist with Get it readers 1. Don’t forget, Superannuation Guarantee is to increase from 9% − 9.25% on 1 July. It is important to make sure your payroll software is updated and ready to use by your first pay run in the new financial year. 2. Are you in the building and construction industry? If you made payments to contractors during the year ending 30 June 2013, you will soon need to lodge your first Taxable Payments Annual Report (by 21 or 28 July depending on your circumstances). 3. Do you have a discretionary (family) trust? Trustees must resolve to distribute the trust income by 30 June, if a valid trustee resolution is not made unintended consequences will arise such as the trustee being assessed at the top marginal tax rate! 4. Tax and Business Planning. Tax Planning is extremely important for any business, and as the name suggests, is about planning for your tax for the current

financial year, and stopping to have a look at how your business is performing. Many small businesses are unaware of: l How much tax will you have to pay? l When is your tax due? l What can you do to minimise your tax? l How is your business performing? l How can you improve your profit? Tax and Business Planning is an important tool for any business, and helps you plan cash flow, assist with decision making, monitor performance and minimise your tax. 5. Prepare your budget for next

financial year – How well do you know your business? Do you have a budget? Do you track your performance against that budget? REAL LIFE with Caroline Marquez

Caroline Marquez meets passionate local, Trent Chapman, to discover the heart behind his amazing journey on foot from Brisbane to Sydney, whipper-snipper at the ready... earing a beloved family member say they hope to not see their next birthday would severely concern any of us, but for Trent Chapman, a 27-year-old Gold Coaster, it was a different story. Last year,Trent walked over 1100 kilometres from Brisbane to Sydney whilst cleaning up the side of the highway with a brush-cutter − a journey he was inspired to take after calling his nan to wish her a happy birthday. He explains, “I was bought up by my nan and she’s the big back bone of my family. She’s always been a really positive person but seven years ago, she was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease... I began to notice she’s had a big nose-dive [in recent years]. On her birthday in July, I rang to wish her a good day but she was really negative about it. She told me she didn’t want to see her next birthday and was hoping it was her last one. I didn’t know what to say as it put me in an awkward situation. I told her it couldn’t be that bad and that we’d get through it, but she just said I didn’t know what it was like to have joints ache [constantly], no independence, no sleep and having people laughing at her”. It’s difficult to grasp the heartache of hearing a person who has helped raise you say they wish to die, but Trent not only pushed his sadness aside, he realised his nan was right; he had absolutely no idea what it was like. “I figured, what’s something that will replicate her situation and make me shake, put pain in my joints and put me in a situation where I don’t really know if I will make it? That’s when I thought of a brush-cutter, and Googled ‘Tanaka’ as this was the brand of the whipper-snipper I used when helping my nan do her lawn. It came up straight away so I got in touch with the marketing manager,” he smiles enthusiastically. As it turned out, the team at Tanaka were May 2013

keen to pitch in; not only were they interested in supporting a worthy cause, but coincidently it is a cause close to their corporate family’s heart too. Tanaka’s marketing manager told Trent they’d be happy to donate a brushcutter for his mission, but also informed him that the CEO of Parklands Power Products (Australia’s distributors of Tanaka tools) had also been diagnosed with Parkinson’s. His contact with them in this regard was somewhat serendipitous, and Trent was gradually gathering ever more momentum for his worthwhile plight. Trent’s journey took 28 days to complete and while he learnt valuable information about Parkinson’s Disease throughout his campaign, physical and mental strains eventually took a toll on his health. “I had no prior training before the walk; I wanted it to be as realistic as possible,” he explained. “It was tough. The first few days everything was a bit surreal, my body didn’t know what was happening but from days three to 10 it was complete agony”. Trent explained to me that frustratingly, due to such a huge shock to the body, his feet, toes and heels become completely swollen. As he continued his story in greater detail, I noticed I started becoming increasingly out of breath! He added, “I didn’t get much sleep as I kept cramping up and waking in puddles of my own sweat. From day 18, I didn’t know if I was going to make it, my body just wanted out”. Trent’s eyes glazed over as he tells me how this feeling - the desire to surrender finally enabled him to relate a little to what his nan had said about “giving up”. Upon that thought though, he remembered his determination to make a difference because of what his loved-one was going through. He was inspired to push on towards his goal, 32

despite pain and discomfort. Through his walk, Trent, alongside charity, Shake It Up (shakeitup.org.au), raised around $20,000; but what was more valuable was the massive amount of media coverage and awareness about Parkinson’s that was achieved on a national front.“There’s never been enough awareness for Parkinson’s and not many people know much about it. Through media portals like Sunrise, The Project, Today Show, and Sea FM, we got around $300,000 worth of media exposure,” he nods happily, adding that hopefully the awareness will help raise dollars which will be used to fund the discovery of a cure for this debilitating physical disease. Trent crossed the finish line at the Sydney Harbour Bridge. His family and friends were waiting eagerly for him, as were national media covering his extraordinary story. “I don’t know how it was kept from me but as I finished, I looked up and saw my nan standing there waiting for me. It was amazing seeing her there; it made me really feel like I had actually finished,” he tells, as we both try to not tear up. “I hugged her tight, we both started crying and she whispered and smiled into my ear,‘I’ll never whinge again…’” After such a beautiful and inspiring story I dared to ask if he would do it again, to which he cheerfully replied,“Definitely. I’m thinking about going all around Australia with it, hopefully once a year! All it takes is a walk to make a positive difference in someone’s life; it just goes to show that one person can make a difference!” Certainly, we should all be proud that this kind of spirit and determination hails from right here on the Gold Coast. Who knows what great adventure Trent will dazzle us with next? In the meantime, consider donating to support his efforts, shakeitup.org.au.

TRAVEL with Sarah Blinco

BEWITCHING

Boston

A cool city brimming with beauty, history and popculture fun; Sarah Blinco explains why Boston is a brilliant place to visit for a true American experience ou’re probably more familiar with Boston than you realise. Any Ally McBeal fans out there? How about Cheers, Falling Skies, The Practice; the film Good Will Hunting, or an obvious series, Boston Legal? Boston is a ‘film and TV’ city, a lot like Los Angeles, New York or Vancouver. You’ll always find something being shot on the streets around these parts, and in fact, often scenes set in New York are actually captured in Boston! It’s for this reason the city has a familiar feel, even to those who haven’t visited (yet). With recent events top of mind, I wanted to tell you a little about this impressive old city of Massachusetts. Feedback from Aussies being interviewed in the aftermath of the despicable Boston marathon bombings in April was completely positive. Bostonians (that is, the people of Boston or Greater Boston) were hailed as helpful, friendly and hospitable − it was their community that assisted the many visitors to the city amidst fear and disaster. The reason I mention this, is because we had the same experience when visiting the city about a year ago. June 2013

It’s a friendly town full of proud, talkative residents. Alongside the kind locals, there are many great reasons to visit − beautiful big parks, cheeky (and rather pudgy) squirrels, intriguing architecture (new and oldworld), and an overall nice vibe. Boston is one of America’s first big and important cities, and its rich, influential history is apparent throughout every neighbourhood. Furthermore, Boston is a convenient base for exploring the bounty of day-trips on offer to divine destinations like Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, The Hamptons (where television’s Revenge is set (although surprisingly, not filmed)), Rhode Island, prestigious Harvard University, and a bewitching option from my 34

own X-Files-inspired bucket list − but more on that in a moment. Boston is a popular ‘walking city’, and much of the centre is accessible by foot. We chose a combination of walking, trolley tour, and public transport utilising a weekly pass (locally known as a ‘Charlie’ ticket) to make our way between famous landmarks including Boston Common (America’s first public park, opened in 1634), School Street and the site of the very first public school in America (established by Puritans in 1635), along The Freedom Trail (a 2.5 mile red-brick walking trail that leads to 16 nationally significant historic sites, each one an authentic American treasure and often with importance relating to the American Revolution), Cheers Boston (yep, the 1980s television series’ pub!) and along the city’s pretty waterfront. Ask a local what the best free, fun things to do are however, and they’ll readily suggest ideas like visiting Boston’s ‘Italian quarter’ to sample authentic Bostonian fare; or instead of paying for a tour to a wellknown (that is, expensive) beachfront tourist suburb, utilise the convenient ‘T’ (local metro system) and take a train to a seaside town like Rockport, or to the fascinating historical and ‘bewitching’ city of Salem – ‘witch’ is exactly where we ventured. The day we travelled an hour up the coast to Salem was appropriately grey. Salem is a small city founded in 1626, and for many years it was critical to America’s

east coast because of strong military and shipping facilities. Additionally, the city is notorious for the witch trials of 1692 (of which many books, plays and films, in particular The Crucible, are based upon). Today, Salem capitalises just a little on its infamous past, and I must admit to battling an overpowering urge to purchase ‘lucky’ trinkets, tickets to psychic readings, magic sparkly things, and dancing witch dolls (complete with straw broom and stripedsocks) from the many quirky shops in town. Jest aside, we did visit the memorial for those accused throughout the hysteria of Massachusetts’ horrific witch trials. Unlike regions of Europe where in some cases this type of frenzy lasted for many years, witch trials only remained for a year in these parts – but they were renowned. Today the stories stand as a lesson of tolerance. The memorials are surrounded by engraved fragments of final pleas of innocence: missing words within engraved sentences are to symbolise the sad fact that in the end no one was listening. It’s convenient to ride on a trolley tour, which takes visitors around town to fascinating spots like Winter Island, site of Boston’s last public execution (a young boy hanged for stealing a horse); and Dead Horse Beach, a terrifying place where many people and horses perished in a shocking fire – the horses were taken out to sea and ‘buried’ at low tide, but then floated back up again at high tide and bones are still found today,

beautiful big parks, cheeky (and rather pudgy) squirrels, architecture (new and old-world), and an overall nice vibe. a hundred years on! Like Boston, Salem’s streets are lined with interesting old homes, many even engraved with the original owners’ names and year of construction. Interestingly, Salem is where the Parker brothers (Parker Bros.) developed games like Monopoly and Clue. During the Great Depression, Parker Bros. employed most of the townsfolk and paid using Monopoly money when there wasn’t any real money to go around. The town’s businesses accepted the currency when times were tough, which 35

kept the economic wheels turning – pretty cool, yes?! History, culture, gorgeous architecture and outdoor sculptures, world-city entertainment and cuisine ... maybe even a few ghosts in between. I was sad to see such an awful occurrence happen in Boston this year, because for me, the city provided an abundance of wonderful activities, travel insight and historical awareness. Put simply, it’s a really cool American metropolis, and I hope you’re able to visit one day too. June 2013

HEALTH with Madonna Williams

Madonna Williams offers insight into a few amazing foods that will help to prevent or reduce inflammation, improve the immune system, boost energy levels, and promote glowing skin. Additionally these foods assist with regulation of metabolism, lowering of cholesterol and blood pressure, improvement of digestive health and protection against heart disease and cancer.

7

1. ACAI BERRIES Acai (ah-sigh-ee) is a high-energy berry of a special Amazon palm tree, and is potent with antioxidants, amino acids, and essential fatty acids among other things. Remember to always check that selected berry products have no added sugar (especially acai). Berries are ideal to mix with porridge, juices or smoothies. 2. CACAO Cacao or raw chocolate is one of the highest antioxidant foods on the planet and a great source of magnesium, iron, zinc, manganese and chromium. Cacao elevates mood and energy, improves cardiovascular health and is a natural aphrodisiac. Available in powder form or nibs (like chocolate chips), is unprocessed, hence an excellent healthy supplement in smoothies, desserts and baking recipes. 3. GREENS Greens help detoxify and alkalise blood, boost liver function and help build healthy intestinal flora. Eating greens is like getting the ultimate prescription medicine that has no nasty side effects. The best greens are wheatgrass, sprouts, kale, broccoli, spinach, cabbages, dark green leafy lettuce and beet greens. It’s best to eat greens with every meal. 4. SEAWEED Seaweed (for example, nori, kelp, dulse, arame, wakame, kombu) extracted from the nutrient-rich ocean, is abundant in calcium, iron and iodine and loaded with important vitamins including vitamin A, B1, B2, B6, B12, and vitamin C and K, which support healthy organ function and immunity. Seaweed is close to plasma, purifying and alkalising the June 2013

blood, countering toxins like heavy metals and radiation by promoting their elimination. It also contains a lot of calcium and has plenty of iodine which supports cell metabolism and healthy thyroid function; furthermore, seaweed contains a rare functional balance between omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids 5. LEMONS Lemons are blessed with natural healing properties rich in vitamin C, vitamin A, beta carotene, folate, calcium, magnesium, and potassium. Lemon peels help rid the body of toxic carcinogenic elements and contain salvestrol Q40 and limonene, understood to fight against cancerous cells. Tip: Lemon juice − add half organic lemon freshly squeezed to a jug of water for drinking during the day; or lemon peel − freeze whole, organic lemons (keep in freezer). Grate sprinkles of lemon peel over meals, in drinks and soups for fresh flavour and a hit of the aforementioned health benefits.

6. SPIRULINA Spirulina is a type of algae that provides an array of minerals, phytonutrients and 36

enzymes. Algae improves brain and immune function, promotes detoxification, reduces inflammation, improves circulation, energy and endurance. Additionally, spirulina is the world’s highest source of complete protein (65 per cent). It is packed with iron, chlorophyll, antioxidants and also contains sulfur which improves the immune system, physical strength, and boosts liver and pancreas function. 7. COCONUT OIL Coconut oil is valuable to the immune system as it contains antiviral, anti-fungal and antimicrobial properties. It also improves digestion and absorption of fat-soluble vitamins and amino acids, supports utilisation of blood sugar and improves the absorption of calcium and magnesium. Add a tablespoon of coconut oil to smoothies, or use it in place of olive oil for cooking. STRENGTH

Training

Morne Lombaard of Fit City gives ten good reasons to incorporate strength training into your fitness regime

1. avoid muscle loss Adults who do not strength train lose between 2.2kg and 3.2kg of muscle per decade. Endurance exercise improves cardiovascular fitness; it does not prevent loss of muscle tissue. 2. avoid metabolic rate reduction Muscle is active tissue; muscle loss is accompanied by a reduction in resting metabolism, and strength training helps to prevent this. 3. replace muscle mass Research shows that a standard strength training program can replace (lost) muscle mass by about 1.4kg over an eight week period (a standard response for men and women who do 25 minutes of strength exercise one day each week). 4. increase metabolic rate Research reveals that adding 1.4kg of muscle increases metabolism by 7%, and daily calorie requirements by 15%. Adults who replace muscle through sensible strength training use more calories all day long, thereby reducing fat accumulation. 5. reduce body fat A study in strength exercise produced 1.8kg of fat loss after three months of strength training and the subjects were eating 15% more calories each day. A basic strength training program resulted in 1.4kg more muscle, 1.8kg less fat, and 370 more calories per day food intake. 6. increase bone mineral density Progressive resistance exercises are similar for muscle tissue and bone tissue. The same training stimulus that increases muscle strength also increases bone density and mineral content. 7. improve glucose metabolism Researchers have reported a 23% increase in glucose uptake after four months of strength training. Because poor glucose metabolism is associated with Type 2 Diabetes, improved glucose metabolism is an important benefit of regular strength exercise. 8. reduce lower back pain Strong low-back muscles are less likely to be injured; and a recent study found low-back patients had less pain after 10 weeks of full range strength exercise for the lumber spine muscles. 9. reducing resting blood pressure Strength training alone has been shown to reduce resting blood pressure. A study revealed that combining strength and aerobic training is even more effective. 10. improve blood lipid levels Studies have revealed improved blood lipid profiles after several weeks of strength training. It is important to note, improvements in blood lipid levels are similar for both endurance and strength exercise. Now you know why to train there’s no more excuses! H Aries March 20 –April 19 June is a good month to undertake study or expand on your knowledge and wisdom.Finances are also on the rise, flowing in from overseas or overseas companies. LASTWORD with Sarah Blinco

Sheryl Sandberg Sarah Blinco discovers the COO of one of the world’s most famous companies is a strong advocate for women taking charge in our own uniquely feminine way hile you may not know her name, you’ll certainly know her product. Sheryl Sandberg is Chief Operating Officer at Facebook − responsible for overseeing sales, marketing, HR, communications and business development for the monster social media brand − and I’ve been doing a little digging on her recently. Seems she’s a pretty inspiring woman, and an ideal person to commentate on for our June issue reflecting tax-time, business and innovation. Sheryl’s recently released a book, Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead, and several of her key messages remind women that we don’t have to mimic men to get ahead at work. An ambitious business-woman, Sheryl’s also a mum, and as someone named at number 10 on “the world’s 100 most powerful women” list by Forbes Magazine, she’s evidently a highly skilled multi-tasker. She’s extremely bright − graduated from Harvard in economics in 1991 (winning the John H Williams Prize for achieving top marks in her year) and gained her Harvard Business School MBA four years later (again with the highest distinction); and has held prestigious roles including chief of staff for the United States Department of the Treasury, vice president of global online sales and operations for Google, and finally moved over to Facebook in 2008 where she’s credited with making the business profitable in just a few years.Feeling a little inferior yet? I know I am! Sheryl’s the first to say however, that “Superwoman” doesn’t actually exist. In an interview with Stylist Magazine in the UK, she freely admits to a few tears in the office: “Sheryl Sandberg recounts a story where, having heard some hurtful rumours about herself at work, she brings them up in front of her boss, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, and ends up crying. He gives her a hug, she feels soothed, and at the moment where most of us would feel a little vulnerable, and would hope the emotional episode would never be mentioned again, Sheryl Sandberg decides to tell the whole world” (stylist.co.uk). She’s struggled to succeed in this ‘man’s world’, regardless of intelligence and accolades, and numerous stories in her book demonstrate this. At 43-years she has some wisdom to share, hence the release of Lean in. Interestingly she addresses themes explored in our May Get it cover feature by Isiah McKimmie, The Power and the Passion. In the book Sheryl encourages women who could benefit from “leaning in” and June 2013

“speaking up”, emphasising the importance of communication and being uniquely ‘you’. She explores the notion that while we’re all ready to advocate equality in the workplace, the same women are shy to ask for a raise, promotion, equal pay or whatever else it is we may need. She discusses what it is women can do to help ourselves, by making small changes in life that can effect change on a larger scale. She draws on her own experiences, as well as academic research, and offers practical answers to problems facing women in the contemporary workforce. Prior to the release of Lean in, on 8 March News.com. au described the book as “part feminist manifesto, part how-to career guide,” at which point a question was posed − is Sheryl “too successful? Does her blueprint for success ignore the plight of poor and working-class women? Does the book’s very premise blame women for not rising to top corporate positions at the same rate as men?” Evidently much of the criticism arose from journalists and bloggers who hadn’t read the book (in fact, it hadn’t even been published at that point), and indeed she’d anticipated the feedback, noting within its pages, “My hope is that my message will be judged on its merits”. As an advocate for effectively managing a work-life balance (she’s renowned for leaving work at around 5.30pm each day), as well as being an active and outspoken supporter on the issues facing working (particularly corporate) women, Sheryl’s certainly one to 50

watch as an influencer in years to come. Some of her timely advice includes, “Fortune favours the bold... If others say you’re difficult, it’s probably not you, it’s them... Date bad boys, marry good men... Done is better than perfect ... Cheer girls and women on”. Regardless of her wealth, power or position, I believe we can all learn a little something from someone like Sheryl, and why wouldn’t we want to? She says, of all the inspirational slogans that hang on Facebook’s walls, her favourite asks,“What would you do if you weren’t afraid?”Good question. What’s your answer? *Sources: Stylist Magazine UK; News.com.au; Random House Publishing.
