We are big-time foodies in my family.

We talk about food, plan meals, have a weekly menu, have regular family dinners, share new recipes, pack up breakfast, lunch or dinner and go on picnics…heck, we’ve actually even created a Campbell family recipe book with all of our foodie faves.

Food has always been a family affair. My sister is a qualified chef. I grew up eating fresh home-cooked meals – we rarely ate takeaway and only went out for dinner once in a blue moon. We all sat down for dinner every night with the TV off. My school lunchbox was filled with amazing chicken and salad sandwiches or rolls, fresh fruit, cheese and crackers…it was all-but gourmet.

Mum and Dad both cooked and baked…really well. I learnt how to cook my own food at about age 11 or 12.

Mum simply told me I was cooking dinner that night and so I grabbed a recipe book and found the easiest thing I could – tomato and bacon pasta. It was delicious and I still cook it to this day.

We were always in the kitchen with Mum or Dad when they were baking hoping to get the chance to lick the bowl, spoon or beaters. That was the best part. Dad is a mad-keen veggie grower and it was our job as kids to pick fresh carrots, beans or whatever else was needed from the garden for dinner.

Gosh, the more I think about it the more food memories I have…even now we are still creating them. We’ve started a game. We have to buy breakfast, lunch and dinner on $65 a couple – yes, that’s right; all three meals. It has be sit down (no takeaway), include drinks and there’s no fast food allowed, and that’s pretty much the rules. So not only does this game create memories, but it also means we get to visit new places, share meals and try new foods that often become family faves.

Food connects people. Sharing a meal together with someone or a group of friends and family promotes conversation, good times and memories, and that to me is what it’s all about. Food is not only good for fuelling our bodies, but it’s good for the soul too, don’t you think?

Friend or foe?

Renae Bressi was addicted to food, or at least that’s what she thought for more than 20 years of her life

lways craving food, Renae Bressi never failed to give into temptation. She would have a bag of chips at the ready in her handbag as a back-up even.

There was food stashed under the bed, in the car, at the back of the drawers in her bedroom and an emergency chocolate bar hidden in the freezer right behind the frozen peas so her brother couldn’t get to it.

When she went out, she made sure there was food at hand just in case she got some uncomfortable feelings and needed to soothe the pain … with food.

The craving for food could’ve been triggered by the stress of finishing an assignment, if she found herself alone, waiting for a bus or watching TV. And she was always thinking about food.

“Since before I was a teenager I can remember if I wasn’t thinking about what I was going to eat next, I was regretting the meal I just ate,” she says.

“I wasted over 20 years of my life obsessing over food and hating myself for constantly giving into temptation. I was plagued with feelings of worthlessness, loneliness and the crazy notion I had to be perfect to fit in and be accepted.”

Renae, now a coach, speaker and international business owner, believes there is an underlying message in the media that women have to be thin, we have to be perfect and there is a constant focus on food.

“We have turned food into the enemy.

But we have to stop focusing on the food and start focusing on why the food is being eaten,” she says.

“As a community, we obsess over food. We have labelled it as bad, but it’s not the food that’s bad. The food’s just there, doing what it’s doing. We blame the food, ourselves and our lack of willpower.

“To solve this problem, we need to delve into our emotions and why we have these attitudes towards food.”

An abundance of information, diets and experts dishing out their opinions can make it hard for women to know what to do.

“More and more young women every day hate themselves and how they look, and want to change their size and body shape. They July 2015

A famous playwright Sidney Howard once said: One half of knowing what you want is knowing what you must give up before you get it. are being constantly bombarded through mainstream media about body image and what foods are ‘good’ and ‘bad’. I have even spoken with girls as young as 8 years old who feel they need to go on a diet,” she says.

After 20 long years of suffering with what Renae thought was a food addiction, she finally found out the truth.

“Once I found out I wasn’t addicted to the food at all, but rather addicted to the feeling that the food gave me, it was like the wall in front of me came crashing down. The moment I started to look deeply into what emotions were driving my eating habits I was finally able to control what I ate,” she says.

Renae’s mission is to get the message out to as many young, independent women as she can. She has taken her personal 12

experiences and shares what she knows through her public speaking, mentoring and her 12-week Overcome Your Emotional Eating program.

“I spent so long focusing on what to eat and what not to eat, and trying to control what I ate, but I still couldn’t go a day without eating chocolate. I never thought I could give up lollies, chips and chocolates – no way in the world,” she says.

“But as soon as I started focusing on why I ate, I could control what I ate effortlessly and now I haven’t eaten chocolate in 18 months.

“There is a solution to this merry-goround we find ourselves in…and it does take commitment. The bonus is that there are strategies we can put in place to help cope with the challenges life throws at us.”

The world wouldn’t be the same without volunteers and Richard Patterson is inspired every day by people who face their own challenges but still find time to volunteer eading up one of Australia’s largest volunteering recruitment and referral centres – Volunteering Gold Coast - is both challenging and rewarding for CEO Richard Patterson, but he wouldn’t have it any other way, and after 15 years in the business Richard takes some time with Get it to talk about why he loves it and what inspires him.

Why is volunteering important?

Community members who volunteer generally have a great appreciation of how fortunate they are to live in this country. It gives a perspective on the aspirations of the community, signposts those who require support with their lives, provides the balance between our paid work and the things we do directly for each other in our community.

We all know that volunteering gives us a great sense of belonging and in recent times studies have confirmed that people who volunteer live happy, more fulfilled and more satisfied lives.

What inspires you in this role?

There are literally many thousands of people who come through our doors each year and offer the gift of their time. In some cases people want to support a cause and they don’t care what role they do to support that cause – it might be to help animals or the elderly; they just want to assist

in any way. Many other volunteers are keen to select a volunteer position which develops their skills, capabilities, experience, knowledge and even qualifications. You also get volunteers who find their favourite cause and the perfect volunteering role which inspires them. It really inspires me when so many volunteers who are challenged in their own lives still find time to help others – that is really special!

What is the best part of your job?

I have the good fortune to move around the community and mix with many different people in vastly different positions – from the Premier to the volunteers. The incredible part of the my job is that everyone understands the amazing job being done by more than 6 million Australians who volunteer, which makes this country such a great place to live. Everyone has a moving story to tell about a family member, a friend, a neighbour – or their own volunteer experience. I always tell my staff that it is an amazing feeling being the CEO of a business which imparts so much joy into the lives of tens of thousands of Gold Coasters each year.

Why does the community need organisations like Volunteering Gold Coast?

It may sound both strange and obvious but community organisations can’t get enough volunteers. No matter how many volunteers we recruit, no matter how much training and support we offer volunteers and organisations, no matter how many services we assemble there is never enough support for those in need in our community. An organisation like Volunteering Gold Coast recruits volunteers, supports organisations and provides all sorts of services so that community organisations can focus on providing services and not have to focus on finding and retaining great volunteers. We are lucky to provide much of the “glue” which binds community services together as volunteers ensure services are spread so much further and that passion remains in community work.

Tell us your favourite volunteer story.

Several years ago, Volunteering Gold Coast had a volunteer staff member who had previously worked as a prostitute. Drugs and alcohol had been a big part of her life and her siblings and parents had spent long periods of time in jail. We made sure she wore appropriate clothing each day, remained sober and off drugs. After a short while, she became a great advocate for the volunteering cause and picked up a paid job as a volunteering co-ordinator in regional Queensland.

How do you become a volunteer?

We’re always happy to have a chat with anyone interested in becoming a volunteer. People would be amazed at the range of industries that we cover, including conservation, aged care, disability, art and sports organisations. It’s perfect for job seekers, people seeking a new career or those new to our Gold Coast community. Many of the people who start out as volunteers eventually end up with a paid position.

ULTRASONIC LIPOSUCTION What is ultrasonic liposuction?

Ultrasonic liposuction is a relatively new technology that is often used together or instead of the normal tumescent liposuction technique. Not many clinics have this available, but we have our own machine, which is a great advantage for our patients.

How does it work?

Instead of a cannula vacuuming the fat out of the body, the ultrasonic probe uses high energy-non-audible sound waves to shatter the fat cells. The energy is selective to the fat cells and minimises trauma to other structures like blood vessels and nerves.

What are the benefits of having the procedure?

It has the great benefit of tightening the skin during the treatment and we often see incredible and rapid tightening around the face and neck. Most patients will see a dramatic improvement overnight, with minimal discomfort, swelling and bruising.

What can people expect?

So, the ultrasonic liposuction technique provides us with the ability to help our patients get very impressive results with liposuction, often reducing the need for skin removal procedures, which of course are more involved and leave scars.

This can create an amazing firm jawline with no tell-tale scars. It is great for men, where the traditional facelift can create scars that cannot be covered with hair, like in a woman.

For skin texture, which is an important part of facial rejuvenation, we use peels, needling, radio frequency and other methods - but some of these need a longer recovery.

ANTI-AGEING TREATMENTS What are the anti-ageing treatments you offer?

Most if not all of our treatments can be called antiageing ... and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s so easy now to turn back the clock, not only on the face, but also on the body. There are also a number of treatments that reverse the clock internally as well... such as collagen supplements, peptides and other hormones.

How do they work?

However, what gets me inspired and excited is discovering a well-made garment that you can keep. It’s that feeling you get when you walk in to a shop and gasp at the sight of a beautifully made dress or jacket. I often find myself thinking how many hours it took for such a piece to be designed only to be interrupted by the shopkeeper.

I’m talking about “wearable couture” – high quality, runway looks you can wear every day, think Alex Perry or Elie Saab. Wearable couture is what really inspired me to get into styling; seeing the craftsmanship in a garment, the details in the embellishments, colours and how the texture of the fabric feels against your skin. Wearable couture is made to last a lifetime and is often passed down as family heirlooms.

t’s no secret that women, and in particular mothers, comprise the fastest growing cohort of start-up entrepreneurs. Why? Because the reality of “having it all” - holding down a job, doing the school run, supervising after-school activities and managing the bath, bottle and bed routine each evening is (unsurprisingly) proving to be more than we bargained for.

That’s why so many working mums are turning to online businesses as a solution to the “how do I make it all work?” dilemma. If you’re keen to claw back control over your working life and set up an online business, here’s a few tips from Bernadette Schwerdt - an online marketing strategist, conference speaker and the author of Secrets of Online Entrepreneurs – How Australia’s Mavericks, Disruptors and Innovators Built Their Internet Businesses and How You Can Too - to get you started.

1. Get clear about your purpose A famous playwright Sidney Howard once said: “One half of knowing what you want is knowing what you must give up before you get it.”

So when it comes to setting up a business, you need to ask: 1) what do you want from your online business and 2) what are you prepared to give up to get it?

Having clarity about these two questions determines everything: from what you’ll sell and how you’ll sell it to how much work you’ll put in, how much money you’ll invest and much more.

For example, do you want a home-based business that fits in around your family July 2015

commitments, that pays for the school fees and affords you a family holiday to Noosa each year?

Or do you want a multimillion-dollar publicly listed start-up that gets you on the cover of the BRW Rich List edition, sees you jet-setting around the world, and provides a glittering lifestyle to match?

Both models have merit but each will require different amounts of energy, capital and time away from the family.

One of the key issues at the heart of this is the belief that “if I just write one fantastic blog, my database will explode” or “if I just get on one TV talk show, I’ll be inundated with sales” or “if I just create one amazing video, it will go viral and I’ll get 100,000 Facebook fans overnight”.

Unfortunately, it just doesn’t work that way. When Kate Morris, founder of online beauty retailer AdoreBeauty.com. au started out, she had no customers at all,

2. Share your ideas When Jodie Fox started Shoes of Prey, an online shoe design company, she sent a survey to her girlfriends asking them to comment on her new business idea. The feedback she got from the survey and other informal conversations gave her the confidence to know she was on the right track and to invest further in the idea.

Holding your cards close to your chest won’t help you get your idea off the ground.

3. Focus on one customer at a time One of the most frequently asked questions I get from start-up business owners is, “How can I find customers?”. The frustration is palpable, especially for those with no marketing budget, customers or track record.

4. Having it all is possible If you know that the nine-to-five grind is wearing you down and you need to change the way you work, creating an online business could be the answer. Make no mistake though – an online business is no walk in the park and it certainly requires time, effort and persistence, but the difference is you’ll be doing it on your terms, and isn’t that what “having it all” really means?

broach a better boating deal When buying a boat, the last thing on your mind are the pitfalls and legalities. Here’s why you need a licensed broker

n this online age, we’re all experts. We can Google any information we seek, shop around, find the best deal and save time and money into the bargain.

Why then isn’t buying or selling a boat the same as a CD, dress, holiday or even a car?

You hear stories of Aussie boaties who find a steal on Craigslist. They are lured in by the price when they compare it to local options, or tempted by the deals that can be done by going to an overseas boat show and dealing direct with the exhibitors and their “show discounts”.

How disappointing then when these bargain hunters are hit with tariffs and the complications involved with getting their boat “ship shape” for use in Australia. Like most things that seem too good to be true, a “grey import” can prove costly when compliance and other issues need to be addressed.

As these vessels are being imported without the manufacturers consent they will not be covered by the manufacturer’s warranty. Local dealers will cringe when confronted with a boat under the brand they represent that was built for a foreign market. While the boat may meet the safety requirements in its country of origin, it may fall well short of the minimum safety requirements in Australia.Then there’s the electrical wiring, gas piping, engine emissions, buoyancy materials, quarantine and reams of paperwork.

Other issues include after sales support, resale, product liability and insurance. Some companies will not sell a boat if it is found to be noncompliant to Australian standards.

If you’re keen to buy a pre-loved or new boat, licensed boat brokers should be your first port of call. Like a real estate agent, they manage the entire process of buying your ‘dream boat’, no matter where in the

world it may bob up, or help you sell your boat within their professional network.

Brokers are highly motivated – they live and breathe boats, generally have an extensive marine background and they love what they do.

According to Ian Swan, director at Swan Super Lines: “We consider ourselves very lucky to spend 24/7 on boats, around boats and looking at boats. Not many people can make their passion their profession.”

Brokers can work with you on your list of “must haves” and “nice to haves”, within your budget and as they have access to databases and dealerships in this region and beyond, they can source a range of boats to suit your brief.

escribed by the Lonely Planet as “astonishingly exotic and utterly compelling”, Vietnam is a traveller’s delight with everything from breathtaking natural sites, “voluntourism” and visiting orphanages to shopping and high-end resorts. But, ultimately, it’s a foodie’s heavenly haven.

Sandwiched between Laos, Cambodia and the South China Sea, Vietnam is a friendly country that’s safe and striking.

Get it magazine caught up with travel agent and Helloworld Hope Island owner Cathy Baker who had a love affair with the country. She shares her experience and encourages others to book a trip ASAP. Danang I spent four glorious days in Danang, at the beach formally known as China Beach.

This luxury five-star fusion resort, graces the Mr and Mrs Smith list of must do hotels in the world and is smaller than most others, being only 4 hectares. But that makes it more intimate and personal. It is the first resort in the world to include daily spa treatments in the room rate, along with a sumptuous buffet breakfast, daily yoga, fitness centre, and every villa has its own private plunge pool.

Hoi An Only 30 minutes away is the tranquil and quaint town of Hoi An, famous for its abundance of tailor shops. This must be the prettiest Asian town I have ever been to. All low-rise architecture where the old town is reserved for foot and bicycle traffic only.

Handy since the Fusion Maia provides free use of new bikes along with the shuttle in from the resort. Being a die-hard shopper, I was in paradise, enlisting more than 20 machinists to make my order of 18 silk garments overnight and all for under $800! Then, of course, there were the silver 32

smiths, shoe makers, lantern makers and the fantastic food. The food! It’s so clean, crisp, healthy but so tasty and cheap.

Ho Chi Minh City After dragging myself away from Danang, I flew an hour into Ho Chi Minh City. Such a vibrant, bustling city with an amazing fusion of French and Asian flavors.

Reminders of the French colonisation are everywhere, including a Notre Dame Cathedral, Opera House and big wide boulevards and gardens. For a big city, so many sights are within walking distance and the city is easy to navigate.

First stop is the amazing Ben Thanh Markets, one of Asia’s largest undercover market that sells everything from live eels in the fish market to copy designer bags and stunning hand embroidered linen. The heat and humidity in the crowded market will soon send you out into the streets though, ready to explore the plethora of boutiques and street stalls.

For the history buffs you can’t get much more recent and pertinent history than that which surrounds you, left over from the Vietnam War. You’ll come across the

Parliament House, famously photographed as the tanks broke down the gates at the end of the war in 1975. Visit the War Remnants Museum, which is a true eye opener. A few hours’ drive in the countryside will take you to the amazing Cu Chi Tunnels.

A city tour is highly recommended. Along the way you will see the room from which the CIA “ran” the war at the beautiful colonial Rex Hotel. If none of this interests you, the shopping and eating will keep you well entertained.

When I returned from Vietnam, I couldn’t stop raving about it as a must-visit destination.

Mainly looking after my wonderful clients. Also I’m fortunate to have a close network with my suppliers who sometimes tell me the “secrets” of coming seasons, so I can tell my clients in advance, which I feel adds a personal touch.

How do you define success?

Being established for 48 years!

What do you do in your down time?

My favourite time is my daily swim, reading, having friends around me and spending time with family.

My days are so diverse...I could be designing a custom piece of jewellery, meeting with brands to select the next collection, fitting a watch battery or cleaning jewellery, working on marketing, updating our social media, dispatching our online orders or helping our wonderful local customers select some beautiful jewellery.

What has been your biggest achievement?

The creation and growth of My Jewellery Shop as a boutique store with an online presence. Leaving the confines of a shopping centre, daring to buck the trend and stay safe, and following my instincts.

Why do you love what you do?

I am so passionate about jewellery and I love making people happy every day by listening and helping them choose something perfect.

How do you define success?

For me it’s about dreaming big, thinking outside the square to find opportunity, believing you can do it, doing it and recognising and celebrating that you have achieved something great.

What do you do in your down time?

Spend time with my family, I love to travel and I am also an active Rotarian so I like to give back where I can.

Fabulous food fiasco With John Burchell, Naturopath

low food, fast food, hot food, cold food, new food, old food. It could be the start of a Dr Seuss book and could potentially be equally as crazy.

We are constantly bombarded with the dos and dont’s of foods, the latest must-follow diets, how food should look and taste, where we should buy it and how much we should or shouldn’t eat.

Food can be broken down into some basic categories: l Food for life l Food for fun l Food for comfort l Food for indulgence The foods we eat, or in fact any of the things we ingest, will have a large influence in the overall outcome of our health. But by no means does healthy mean boring or uninspiring.

“Food for life” is defined as the intake of nutrients to provide all the vitamins, minerals, trace elements, starches, carbs, fats, proteins and enzymes that we need to keep our bodies going. The foods we choose to consume will have an influence on our health, mood, vitality and immune response.

Certain food groups can be used to specifically target a certain requirement. A good example of this is to increase plant and meat proteins for increasing muscle mass.

Coming into winter is another specific. Depending on where you live will vary the requirements, but I’m going to use cold and cozy as the mood and winter-warming foods as the focus.

Warming foods are important in autumn and winter.Warm foods are nutritious and comforting and can be very enjoyable. Winter foods can be all of the four basic categories.

Open fires, casseroles, red wine, stews, stout, Thai and Indian curries, beer, roasts, pies (savoury or sweet), puddings and spirits, minestrone soup using bone stock or veggie broth with all the traditional ingredients, lasagna, gnocchi and pasta can all be enjoyed using unprocessed ingredients. Lots of hearty warming, fun, comforting indulgences. Are we that bad?

All of these foods can be sustaining and healthy or plain and bogged down and stodgy. It all depends on the intent and the choice of ingredients.

Some rules for optimum health-orientated cooking and consuming include: Avoid processed foods. Processed foods are usually modified in some way by heat, standardisation, chemical modification, refining, hydrolysing and preserving.Good examples are milk,which is pasteurised, homogenised and standardised. Salami, bacon and ham; these can be highly processed so source produce that has the least processing and additives. Some salami contains nearly the same proportions of sugar, wheat and emulsifiers as white bread, let alone the salt. Wheat flour is

basically white powder void of anything nutritious unless it is specifically labeled as unprocessed organic whole grain. White sugar is … let’s not go there.

Always use the closest to organic garden fresh produce as you possibly can, if you haven’t grown it, purchase it from someone you know that does.

Failing that, source from the best provider available to you.

Meats are best when they are from free-grazing animals. Again, as fresh and unprocessed as possible is best. It is OK to include fats. Trim the outer fat, but leave some fat on the meat. Good fats are necessary for hormone production, energy, inflammation control and keeping the gall bladder active. Olive oil, grape seed oil, sesame oil, ghee, unprocessed goat produce and even raw dairy produce can be included.

Slow cooking casseroles or stews and the like are wonderful for winter.

Combining meats, veggies and herbs with a boutique stout or red wine and cooking at low heat for several hours provides easily digestible, high quality, gourmet nutrition.

Breads, cakes, pastries and pasta are often a source of culinary grief.

Grains are a great food but due to growing and processing techniques to meet demand, wheat in particular has become a recurring culprit for poor health.

I prefer to use unprocessed spelt, kamut or rye flours for making breads, pastries and casings. Almond flour is great for cakes, biscuits and slices. Tahini, pureed nuts, reduced beetroot and carob are tasty, a great source of protein, alkaline and good for digestion. Look for cheesecakes, and choc-beetroot slices made with these.

Winter foods have been subject to criticism and labeled as “fattening” and “unhealthy” in recent years, unfortunately, with no attention to the detail of the ingredients and the way they are prepared.

These types of foods have been the source of healthy and sustainable nutrition for centuries. It is with the inclusion of produce from more recent practices of growing and processing techniques that we are seeing implications on health.

Go on, indulge, but make it the good stuff!

Pilates is more than just a workout, it’s a way of life and one that’s proven its strength time and time again

ollywood darling Kate Hudson attributes her fab abs to this particular activity and tennis champ Andy Murray swears by it for his core strength too.

Pilates. It’s been around for years and the celebs love it, as do many Gold Coasters, including Burleigh instructor Lisa Pentony, who’s been an integral part in the rehabilitation of QLD Senior State Champion for Surf Lifesaving gold medallist Rob Meyers.

He attributes his amazing recovery and rise to the top to her guidance and support.

Not only that, but the entrepreneur was among the first Pilates instructors to create an online studio where people can DIY their workout and still reap the rewards, like one of the members who lost 32kg.

Pilates is a functional exercise that is perfect for elite athletes and to the elderly, so if you’ve never tried it, now the best time.

Lisa sits down with Get it magazine to talk about her one true love.

What is Pilates?

Pilates is a fitness method that will have you looking and feeling the very best you possibly can. Celebrities such as Jennifer Hawkins, Miranda Kerr, Megan Gale and Rosie Huntington-Whitely swear by Pilates to keep them looking their best. Pilates exercises build strength, flexibility and lean muscle tone with an emphasis on lengthening the body and aligning the spine.

Why do you love it?

I have been teaching fitness since I was 15 years old and nothing has changed my body and my life like Pilates has. It makes you feel slender, toned, strong, aligned and flexible. Pilates truly gets you to your peak physical condition and seeing my client’s transformations never ceases to amaze me. Clients with debilitating migraines have been completely cured and one of our Pilates by Lisa online studio members even lost 32kg just by doing the workouts. Pilates isn’t just exercise, it’s a complete lifestyle.

Why should we incorporate it into our fitness regime?

The cross-training benefits of Pilates are endless. It targets the deep stabilising muscles of the body that are typically neglected during other forms of strength and cardiovascular training. Pilates also builds stamina, increases strength and flexibility, re-balances the muscles, improves co-ordination, reduces the risk of injury and also rehabilitates existing ones. No matter whether you are looking to improve your running stride, perfect your golf swing, deepen your plie or get more out of your next weights session, including Pilates in your regime is an absolute must.

What are the benefits of Pilates?

The benefits include a slim, toned figure, increased flexibility, a dramatic boost in energy levels and a heightened level of body awareness. The alignment and postural benefits of Pilates will have you holding yourself gracefully, standing taller, sitting straighter and moving with better agility and co-ordination.

How does it help with rehabilitation?

Pilates is not only an incredible workout, it’s also an effective rehabilitation method. Many injuries are caused by muscular imbalances in the body, due to the way we stand, sit, bend over, July 2015

lie down, work out or just generally the way we move. Doing this repetitively over time will cause chronic injuries including serious neck, back and shoulder injuries. Pilates promotes balance and even strength throughout the body, reversing bad habits and undoing years of damage. Physiotherapists use Pilates with their clients and prescribe the exercises every day because it is the ultimate way to restore your body to its peak.

Why can it help with other areas of your life?

Your Pilates workout is a time out just for you and a fantastic stress relief. The mind and body connection that you will maintain during your Pilates practice will nudge out all external stresses and the time always flies by. Increased energy levels and a clear and focused mindset will improve your working life too. Pilates also stimulates your lymphatic system and eliminates toxins and waste. Your digestion will improve, your metabolism will increase and your immune system will be in top shape.

What other things should we do for good health?

My personal tips for health and wellness, aside from daily Pilates, are to avoid sugar and refined processed foods, drink 1-2 litres of water daily, be kind to yourself and remember that life is too short to be stressed or upset.

but if you want to enjoy a few glasses in your week you can still lose weight. You just have to remember, whatever you eat while you are drinking your body will store. Your body won’t burn off the food until you have burnt off all the alcohol, so you better get up the next day and exercise!

t is incredible how much information gets pumped out to the public about diet and food choices that completely contradict what we think and know. says Vision Bundall Manager Jeff Osborne.

One expert says red wine is good, while others say it is bad. One says red meat causes cancer, while the other says it is essential. So the question remains among all this conflicting information … what on earth do you do?

Before you work out what you should eat, you need to first work out what you want to get out of it. Eating for health and longevity may look a little different to eating for weight loss, while eating for performance may look different again. We all know eating for enjoyment is a whole other ball game.

Some good advice we have all heard is you should just “eat more real food”. There is definitely some good science and great common sense behind this advice. The only problem is it may not be enough if you want to lose weight.

We have people who come into Vision Personal Training who want to lose significant weight (20kg and more), who aren’t eating all that badly. We all know what we should and shouldn’t be consuming, but for some people eating the right food still results in weight gain.

That’s because some food, while being natural and good for you, may also be causing your body to store more fat.

The key to eating well and losing weight is eating the right balance of food for you.That may mean you have to eat more food, it may mean you need to eat more fat, or you may need to eat less carbs.

One mistake most people make is they just try to eat less. In the short term this could work and you could lose weight, but as you lose weight your metabolism slows and so the only way to continue losing weight is to eat less and less. The basic premise of semi-starvation is flawed because unless you have the mental fortitude to live in mild starvation forever, you have to go back to eating normal again one day and when you do, it doesn’t just pack back on but some interest comes with it.

Some common mistakes people make are: 1. Eating too much fruit: Fruit is good for you. It is loaded with nutrients, tastes great and makes you feel good. But it can be overeaten. Too much of the sugar in fruit - fructose - can cause your body to store more fat and has even been implicated in fatty liver disease, gout and high-blood triglycerides.

2. Not eating enough protein: While protein has the same amount of calories as carbohydrate per gram, it doesn’t have the same effect on weight gain as carbs do. It also delivers essential amino acids to your body and helps you feel fuller longer and less likely to snack on sugary foods.

3. Eating too few carbs: Eating too few carbs can be very difficult.

Managing ketosis effectively is difficult, especially if you aren’t using a blood ketone meter. If you are trying not to eat carbs and you don’t measure blood ketones or don’t even know what they are, your body may not want to burn through as much fat as otherwise.

4. Eating too many carbs: On the flip side, too many carbs causes your body to release your fat storage hormone and your body has to burn through all the excess carbs before it will even try to burn the fat you want to lose. Some carbs are bigger offenders than others.

To be safe vegetables are always going to win over grains and other sources, but it really is easy to eat too many in a day.

5. You have to give up alcohol: There is some good news, you don’t have to give up alcohol to lose weight. It will make it easier

Cocktails are delicious at any time of the year, so here a few of the Get it girls favourites for you to wet your lips Espresso martini “Yum, I love espresso martinis and love getting one made for me at cocktail bars. They are pretty ahhhh-mazing!” Sophie Wood, Editorial Assistant Ingredients • 50ml vodka • 10ml of Kahlua • A splash of Galliano or vanilla liqueur • 30ml freshly pressed espresso Method 1. Fill a martini glass with ice to cool the glass.

2. Pour the vodka into a shaker and follow with the Kahlua.

3. Add the Galliano or another vanilla liqueur.

4. Prepare your espresso shot and pour into the shaker.

6. Fill with ice, seal and shake.

7. Remove the lid of your shaker and the ice from your martini glass.

8. Carefully strain your cocktail using a fine sieve being careful not to spill. Then serve and sip.

Berry bellini “These are the most gorgeous drinks to sip with the girls in summer or winter and they are so easy to make, but I do make mine a little differently to the traditional recipe.”

Food for the

Osso Buco INGREDIENTS • 1kg of veal shanks • 1/2 cup plain flour • Olive oil • 2 brown onions finely chopped • 2 carrots diced • 2 celery sticks diced • 2 cloves garlic crushed • 400g can of tomatoes • 2/3 cup dry white wine • 1 cup of beef stock • 2 tbsp of tomato paste • 2 bay leaves • 1 tbsp dried Italian herbs • Salt and pepper to taste GREMOLATA (to sprinkle at the very end when serving) • 4 cloves crushed garlic • 1 cup fresh parsley chopped • Lemon rind finely grated METHOD Season meat and coat in flour. Heat oil and brown off the shanks until golden brown. Put aside. Sautee onions, garlic, carrot and celery, and transfer to slow cooker. Add the shanks, wine, stock, tomatoes, tomato paste and herbs.

Slow cook for 6-8 hours. Serve and enjoy.

NOTE: I love mine with mashed potatoes and l add milk and butter to mine.

Hungarian Goulash

serves 6 Note: the amount of people you are cooking for will determine the amount of meat you will use for this dish. My dad once said “half a kilo per person is perfect” – and he was, of course, spot on.

INGREDIENTS • 3kg of casserole beef • 6 large onions • 1 large red pepper • 1 small yellow pepper • 2 tbsp of oil • 3-4 cloves of garlic diced • 1/2 tsp bicarb soda • 3 tbsp of sweet Hungarian paprika • 1 tbsp of caraway seeds • 400g can of diced tomatos • 2 tsp tomato paste • 1 bay leaf • 1 cup of good red wine • Salt and pepper to taste • 2 beef cubes METHOD: Dice onions and peppers super fine. Heat up oil and braise them. Use the bicarb soda, which helps soften the onions.

Add about half of the paprika into the onions (careful they don’t burn) and stir frequently.

Add the beef, garlic, caraway seeds, rest of the paprika, salt and pepper and beef cubes, and brown off.

Reduce heat and add tomatoes, tomato paste, wine and bay leaf. Cover and simmer for four hours stirring occasionally. Then serve and enjoy.

Shepherd’s Pie with Sweet Potato Mash INGREDIENTS • 1 tbsp oil • 1 brown onion finely chopped • 1 rash of free-range bacon • 2 crushed cloves of garlic • 1 stick of celery finely chopped • 1 carrot finely chopped • 1/3 cup of peas • 500g of beef mince • 2 cups of beef stock • 1 tbsp tomato paste • Salt and pepper to taste • 1 tbsp of mixed herbs • 1 tbsp plain flour • 2 large sweet potatoes peeled and steamed • 40g of organic butter • 1/2 cup of milk (sometimes l use oat milk) NOTE: Sometimes l add a dash of Worcestershire sauce METHOD: Sautee onion, bacon, carrot, celery and garlic. Add mince, stirring to break up the lumps. Add stock, herbs, tomato paste and herbs, and simmer for 40 minutes on low heat. Use flour at the end if you need to thicken the sauce. Add the peas last because they tend to go soggy. Make mashed potato. Steam the potatoes for about 20 minutes, add milk and butter, and season.

Preheat oven to 180 C. Spoon mince into baking dishes and add sweet potato mash on top. Then bake for 20 minutes.

On a balmy night in May, Superior hosted the official unveiling of the world-first Waterscape now in place at Southport Yacht Club – an impressive LED-lit pontoon for events, dining and making the most of the Broadwater setting. Fire dancers and drummers lit up the night, adding to the lustre of Waterscape, which won Best Marina Innovation at this year’s MIA Awards, and most recently, a coveted 2015 Good Design Award in the Sport & Lifestyle category.

ysters, strawberries, chocolate and spicy food. We have all heard that food can play an important role in turning you on. But what foods really work and what foods are an urban myth?

Oysters This one is a fact. Oysters are packed full of zinc, which helps to regulate libido and sexual function. It has also been suggested that zinc can keep women’s ovaries healthy, meaning they are fit and ready for some fun in the sack. This is all good if you can get past the slimy feel and taste of oysters. A girl’s got to do what she’s got to do!

Wine A little bit of fact and fiction. While alcohol is great for improving confidence and increasing sexual arousal, it also inhibits sexual performance. So a few drinks may help with courage, but it isn’t doing you any favours in the bedroom. Obviously, the more you have the worse it will be. Maybe stick to a few drinks on the anniversary night.

Strawberries Fact. Strawberries gained an erotic reputation due to their many tiny seeds that were thought to symbolise fertility. They also contain vitamin C, potassium, folic acid and some iron and fibre. These vitamins and minerals help supply energy and can boost a dull libido. Strawberries are also a great and delicious food to help you seduce your man. Who could resist a woman whose lips are wrapped around a bright, red strawberry?

Chocolate This one is considered a maybe but don’t dump the chocolate just yet. Chocolate contains serotonin, which is a feel-good chemical that boosts mood and may play a role in arousal. It also contains a small amount of phenylethylamine, which can give you that loving feeling.

Despite this, no study has directly linked chocolate to sexual arousal. In fact, some studies suggest that women may prefer chocolate to sex!

Body chocolate Oh yes, you can actually buy chocolate specifically for the body. Body chocolate is just as delicious as a block of Cadbury Dairy Milk but comes with a paint brush for you to get creative. Let your artistic imagination run wild and indulge yourself and your partner.

Candy lingerie This one is for all the ladies who are keen for a little bit of fun and a tasty treat for their partner. Slip these on unbeknown to your loved one and watch the surprise when he spots a candy treat in your pants.

Raid the pantry Don’t worry if you aren’t prepared with body chocolate and candy lingerie, it is often as easy as raiding the pantry or fridge for something delicious. Treats could include a jar of Nutella, peanut butter or whipped cream. Sex and the City’s Samantha even made sushi look sexy.

Is Periscope a flash in the pan, or social media’s next big thing?

he new media world has been abuzz this year about a new app on the block − a social broadcasting tool, Periscope (periscope. tv). After a good number of weeks trying to deny its ever-growing presence in my circles, curiosity got the better of me; I quietly clicked the go-live button to see what all the fuss is about.

Periscope − a straightforward application (iOS and Android) which enables users to livebroadcast or watch other users’ streams − is fun, as it turns out; although currently steams a tonne of useless, cringe-worthy content. I see huge potential though, which is the reason I’m bringing it up here.

Periscope came to fame in February when Twitter acquired it, pushing this livecasting tech to the front of the line ahead of competitors like Meerkat. It’s still in its infancy, but as we have been experimenting, I’m noticing the potential for brands, publicists and creatives. For consumers too, it’s a chance to get even closer to action in real-time. In May, my brother enjoyed a street-level view as his team, Arsenal, paraded through the streets of North London following their victorious FA Cup win. He of course, was in his kitchen in Bowen Hills, in Brisbane, at the time, but live-streaming on Periscope.

With large-scale events in mind, I have no doubt that as the fashion week circuits kick off in a couple of months, many more users will tune-in to London, New York, Paris and Milan for a front-row perspective.

Problems?

There’s plenty of garbage making its way through Periscope’s lens. Most disturbing I’ve encountered, are teenage girls chatting away in their bedrooms, obviously craving attention but seeking the wrong kind.

And to those who think it’s interesting viewing watching you either repeatedly say ‘hi’, brush your hair in the car, or swig beer − it’s not, get off! Yes, there’s definitely a lot of people broadcasting themselves for the sake of it – “selfie-scoping” as I call it.

Aside from downright boring and stupid, I’m also wondering how Periscope plans to prevent bullying, abuse and broadcasts by extremists − it’s live media, after all.

Sadly, as with all social media, it’s evident there’s a serious lack of parenting and mentoring with regards to kids broadcasting themselves. I understand “it’s all about me” and at times difficult to police, but it’s also about July 2015

the calculating predators who can and will find their targets. There are far better ways to garner self-confidence, so please (please), make sure kids in your care know this; and the excuse that technology is confusing isn’t good enough either. Be curious, get involved.

Potential I perceive creative entrepreneurs and business marketers can move this into a new realm and some will conquer it, just as has happened on other major social platforms. I believe quality, relevant content will become easier to discover, and smart-users will rightfully own this space. Right now, the exciting thing is that there’s scope (pun intended) to crack this.

There’s great potential for bloggers, for example, to live broadcast travel experiences or special events (although the issue of accessible, reliable Wi-Fi does pose a problem in the short term).

Content tips: How to use Periscope for broadcast Going by all the bad content we’re seeing compared with the little bit of interesting material broadcast, as someone who dwells in the world of digital media, I’m noticing rules that aspiring Periscope content producers may like to apply, for a better chance at success. It’s no surprise, they’re similar across all social media: n If you’re going to “scope” (broadcast), do it regularly. Gold Coaster, Lauren Bath, and Australia’s first pro-Instagrammer, said this to me about Instagram too. Choose your platform, own it and be consistent. Sporadic users will not make an effective impact 50

(especially when this platform, at present, only hosts your live feed as a replay for 24 hours). n Be mindful of where your targeted audience lives, when they’re awake, and what their online user habits are. n Share good content – have something interesting or constructive to say or showcase that positions you as an authority in your field. n Be personable – reply to comments. You can actually do this live as you see them feeding through when you’re on-air. Pretty cool! n Try to make sure the broadcast quality is reasonable; that viewers are likely to be able to hear/see what you intend for them. n Choose a headline that grabs attention and explains exactly what you’re sharing. n Don’t forget to complete your profile. n Experiment − have a go, follow users, view feeds from around the world, put something to air yourself. You never know, this new broadcast medium might be an opportunity for you.
