CHINESE NEW YEAR Street Festival

from the editor LAUREN PARIS

elcome to the January issue of Get it magazine – the Gold Coast’s favourite for fashion, beauty, lifestyle, business and more. We hope you’ve enjoyed the holiday period and are now ready to take 2017 by the horns and give it everything you’ve got. If you’re taking this time of year to re-evaluate things – as many of us do – you may be considering whether there are areas of your life that need an overhaul. If you are stuck in a rut when it comes to your job, or are rethinking your career path, we have some great tips this issue. Or, if your day-to-day style needs some attention, our favourite fashionista – and Get it contributor, Susie McWatt Forbes lifts the lid on what a stylist really does. From assessing a client’s body shape and wardrobe to hitting the shops at some of the Gold Coast’s favourite boutiques and department stores, Susie loves helping women transform their lives by feeling, and looking, stylish and confident. Her style sessions are educational and informative, and, she says, if you take on board her simple rules you will have the best wardrobe for the rest of your life. If dressing up in your favourite frock and treating yourself and some friends or loved ones to tantalising treats tickles your fancy, we’ve shared some of our favourite high tea locations and other places on the Gold Coast to visit to satisfy your sweet tooth. High Tea Society have also shared their top tips when it comes to high tea etiquette. We’ve chatted to two leading ladies who have written, starred in and produced an exciting new TV series, partially filmed on the Gold Coast. And, we talk to local charity – Friends With Dignity – about the great work they’re doing in the community to help those impacted by domestic violence. You can find out more about why shopping local – and visiting the markets each weekend – is good for your health and read why the excitement is building in the lead up to the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. We also have some delicious recipes for you to try and make sure you turn to the social pages to see if you were snapped at an event recently. Dress code dramas

Experience the Ultimate in Non Surgical Body Shaping

Get it contributor Anna Davies tells all.

• 30 min ElectroSlim treatment to strengthen and tone muscles

arty season is officially over. While it is painful to return back to working five days a week instead of watching fireworks, drinking champagne and lounging by the pool – I have to say I am somewhat thankful. My wallet is thanking me, my liver is thanking me, and most importantly, my wardrobe is thanking me.

• 30 min Venus Freeze to tighten skin, melt fat and reduce cellulite • Hair analysis test to determine nutrient deficiencies, food sensitivities and toxins

You see, the party season is cursed by the ‘smart casual’ dress code. Could someone please tell me what it actually means? Because I’ve been dressing to this code for the past month and I still have no idea. If you think that making this your go-to dress code is a good idea, please take a look at the following reasons I think the dress code should be banished for good. IT DOES NOT MAKE SENSE The words ‘smart’ and ‘casual’ completely contradict each other. When I think of smart clothes I think of pencil skirts and ties, when I think of casual clothes I think of board shorts and thongs – I may be dress code illiterate but even I know these things should never be put together. IT WASTES MONEY So instead you try and find an in-between. For a guy this is simple, jeans and a button up shirt. For a woman, it’s an endless realm of possibilities that could either be too smart or too casual. Because no wardrobe can ever hope to cater for the demands of ‘smart casual’, you end up buying an absurd amount of ‘nice tops’ or ‘casual heels’ hoping that this will somehow fill the void that ‘smart casual’ has torn into your otherwise peaceful existence. Of course, no amount of ‘nice tops’ will ever tame the beast. IT’S A PLAGUE At the end of the day the plague that is ‘smart casual’ is a plague of laziness. It’s the dress code for when you don’t want to think of a dress code. The poor soul hosting this event thinks that setting a ‘smart casual’ dress code will be one less thing to worry about. Of course they are wrong, ‘smart casual’ is a disease that doesn’t discriminate. Before they know it, the host will be so inundated with questions that if they hear ‘should I wear heels?’ one more time they’ll have little option but to go on a murderous rampage. SO HOW CAN WE CLEANSE OURSELVES OF THIS EPIDEMIC? A wise man called Yoda once said, “do, or do not, there is no try." While this quote was said in a vastly different context to the barbeque you are planning on the weekend, I feel like it still applies. If you can’t think of a dress code that isn’t ‘smart casual’, just don’t even bother, cancel the event – it’s for the greater good. 9

GET IT I CAREER

The realities of a modern day

job interview

anuary is here and with unwavering confidence, we stand by our New Year's resolutions to lose weight, cut back on drinking (we’ll start that one in February, right?) and most importantly, to take a new, bold step in our career. If you know deep down, that you’re not in the right career it’s time to make finding your dream career a priority. And the first step in that process is preparing yourself for the modern day job interview because let me tell you, things have changed… It all starts with your CV Your CV literally introduces you to your future employer, so you want to make a good impression. There is no one-size-fits-all answer to how to write and structure your CV as this will change with your experience and the position you are applying for. It is, however, important to make sure your CV stands out. Use a pop of colour, a professional headshot or a simple design to stylise your CV – this is a clever and subtle way to create a personal brand before you even meet your potential employee. But don’t go overboard with graphics and flowery fonts – you’re going for Michelle Obama, not Miley Cyrus… Social media checks What you’ve heard is absolutely true: employers and recruiters really are looking at your social media pages and as a selfconfessed FBI-level stalker, let me assure you that we will find you and any of your dirty laundry! Make sure all your accounts are set to private, your profile images are appropriate and you aren’t engaged with any groups or pages that may be offensive to potential January 2017

Ex-recruitment consultant and Get it staffer Hayley Bogaard lets us in on a few secrets to nailing your next job interview.

employers. While you’re at it, take a moment to update your LinkedIn profile, as many employers will look there as a professional reference source. Remember, your identity online is your second self so make sure it is as polished and professional as you are! What you wear says it all You would think that this one went without saying, but you’d be surprised at how many people still get it wrong! While the basic principles still apply – dress nicely, iron your shirt and brush your hair – the style of dressing for a job interview has evolved with the business climate. With such a range of jobs in the market – from corporate to creative – it’s important to dress for the role you are interviewing for. If you are going for a more creative role – like graphic design, advertising or marketing– then add a bit of flair to your look with a patterned blouse or some fun accessories. This is a clever way of portraying your personal brand and style before you’ve even said anything. Just make sure you keep it clean and appropriate! The real question? I’m going to let you in on one of the biggest secrets in the recruitment world – when asked what your weaknesses or areas for improvement are, they don’t actually care! Well, that’s not entirely true, they do care, but 10

they aren’t really concerned with what you answer, so much as how you answer. These tricky and often uncomfortable questions are simply a tactic to see how well prepared you are and how well you react under pressure. The truth is, by the time you reach the interview stage, they will have read your CV, stalked you online (see aforementioned social media checks) and have a fairly solid understanding of your professional background. What they are really interested in now is how you present yourself and how you perform under pressure. Do your best to relax, be confident and let your personality wow them! NEW YEAR, NEW YOU, NEW CAREER? International career strategist Zoe B, founder of Simple Life Strategies and the ‘Find a New Career in 30 Days’ program says that finding your dream career really starts with getting to know yourself better, identifying your own values and strengths and then crafting a career that also aligns with the kind of lifestyle you want to live. Zoe said there are various career paths worth considering, if you haven’t already. “Entrepreneurship is huge right now. Anyone can start their own service based business with just a laptop. Online education is also trending big time, so if you have a skill and can teach it online, then you have a blue sky business opportunity. Coaching is also one of the fastest growing industries with life coaches, health coaches and peak performance coaches making lucrative careers all over the world.”

GET IT I LOCAL POFILE

Spotlight on:

Jan Hutton

Meet the woman charged with the responsibility of putting the Gold Coast on the map. Get it catches up with Jan Hutton who holds the role of Chief Marketing Officer with the Gold Coast Tourism Corporation. She is also a member of the Gold Coast’s Women in Tourism networking organisation. HOW LONG HAVE YOU WORKED IN THIS CURRENT ROLE? I started with Gold Coast Tourism in early 2016 after relocating from South Africa but I feel like I’ve lived here for many years. The Gold Coast felt like home from day one. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT YOUR ROLE? I love the people of this city and I’m proud to work for an organisation that promotes Australia’s favourite leisure destination. I’m fortunate to have arrived at the best possible time to influence the marketing of this exciting and evolving city.  I appreciate working alongside smart, passionate people whom genuinely love the Gold Coast. WHAT ARE THE KEY CHALLENGES YOU FACE? Today, people have unprecedented choice when they are planning a holiday or business trip. Destination marketing is more competitive than ever, so we need to be innovative and nimble to be effective and achieve success. WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT THE GOLD COAST? It’s a happy destination - where you always feel like something good is about to happen. We have an exquisite and rare lifestyle on the Gold Coast. For example, on an average work day, we can go swimming at lunchtime and to a world class dining experience in the evening. I also love that within 15 minutes of my home, I can be walking in a world heritage rainforest. WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT THE STRONG PRESENCE OF SUCCESSFUL AND AMBITIOUS BUSINESSWOMEN ON THE GOLD COAST? There is nothing more rewarding than rubbing shoulders with energetic entrepreneurs who share my goal to promote and grow this fantastic city. January 2017

HOW MUCH DO YOU VALUE SOMETHING LIKE THE WOMEN IN TOURISM (WIT) ORGANISATION? Relationships are critical to the success of my role and to those at Gold Coast Tourism so initiating and developing both key and unexpected connections will form a significant pillar for my ongoing success. WHAT EXCITING NEW PROJECTS ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON? We will be soon be launching our new marketing strategy which has a very modern view of how best to attract and engage travellers. This new strategy has also informed a new brand for the destination. Concurrent with this critical work, I will ensure we extract the maximum possible advantage from the GC2018 Commonwealth Games by implementing well-considered marketing and communications plans, in collaboration with our games partners.  WHAT ARE THE FUTURE GOALS FOR TOURISM ON THE GOLD COAST? Our winning aspiration is to be Australia’s most recommended destination. Tourism is a key pillar for the Gold Coast economy and represents an opportunity to further elevate the destination and to grow the local tourism industry. WHAT ARE YOUR PERSONAL GOALS FOR THE FUTURE? I am very excited to soon buy my first home in Australia and to put down roots on the Gold Coast – a new puppy will be part of the picture. I also intend to master stand up paddle boarding and get to know every single hiking track in our hinterland. WHO DO YOU CONSIDER INSPIRATIONAL? Nelson Mandela has been a lifelong influence on me – his leadership and his character have left its mark on my consciousness and helped shape my life values. 12

GET IT I SUCCESS Madeleine Kennedy

LEADING

ladies

ith a cast including former Home and Away star Tessa James, House Husbands star Gyton Grantley, Nic Westaway, Johnny Brady, and more, it’s no surprise lead actresses and producers Amie Casey and Madeleine Kennedy – and the Australian entertainment industry – are beside themselves with excitement about the upcoming release of sci-fi TV series We Were Tomorrow. The sci-fi /drama, currently in post-production and set for release this year, follows twin siblings as they navigate through three lifetimes to escape a dying world and an immortal hunter. Originally shot in late 2015 as an independent feature film, there was a considerable amount of interest as a television series, according to Amie, who – along with Madeleine – is starring in, producing and funding the series. “Following market demand, we decided to reformat it as a series. The reformat has been a positive experience and has allowed us to open up the world of We Were Tomorrow and its characters even more,” Amie says. Amie plays the role of Roxy Woodlands in the series. “Roxy is sister to Siena Woodlands (Alicia Banit) and is an edgy yet vulnerable and sophisticated character who experiences many tumultuous times throughout the series and has a complicated relationship with the other characters,” Amie says. While Madeleine plays the lead role of Evelyn Reeves, twin sister to Noah Reeves (Chai Romruen). Madeleine says the story was conceived 18 months ago and that life has been an exciting whirlwind ever since. “I initially wrote We Were Tomorrow as a feature film in June 2015, but when the unique nature of the premise and the global appeal of the trailer generated more interest as a TV series, we reformatted. We resumed filming episodes in August 2016 across Rockhampton, Winton and the Gold Coast.” “Having a personal love of the Gold Coast and wanting to showcase its beautiful and versatile landscapes certainly helped be a deciding factor when choosing locations for filming,” Amie says. “We have filmed on the Gold Coast twice now for We Were Tomorrow.” Madeleine says the Gold Coast’s versatility in its landscapes, from industrial estates to beaches to tropical forest was a huge drawcard. “The diverse options allowed us to transform various Gold Coast backdrops, like Numinbah, into the American Wild West and Surfers Paradise into a Futuristic Dystopia." “The production team is beyond grateful for the support provided by local QLD councils, including the Gold Coast, so we will definitely have a private screener in each of the cities that helped bring our story to life." January 2017

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS AMIE Amie has a background in the fashion industry as a model and wearable couture designer and is also connected to the local music industry on the Gold Coast and Brisbane surrounds. “I’ve been lucky enough to work alongside international artists such as Savage, Justice Crew, Bone ThugsN-Harmony to name a few,” she says. Beyond We Were Tomorrow Amie 14 has a VR film project that is currently

in preproduction that she and Madeleine will be producing together. “I am also involved in a Bollywood feature film which will be shooting mid next year.” MADELEINE “My most recent other acting credits include: 'Charlies Farm', alongside Tara Reid, 'Thicker Than Water', opposite Pete Murray in his acting debut, and 'Boar' alongside John Jarratt.”

GET IT I GET STYLISH

Why you need a stylist

NOW!

From top style trends, to changing peoples’ lives, personal stylist and Get it contributor Susie McWatt Forbes confesses all usie McWatt Forbes can change your life. She can make you look sizes smaller and even years younger – no surgery required. The Gold Coast-based personal stylist spends her days scouring shops, assessing clients’ body shapes and wardrobes and develops plans and options to see them overhaul their wardrobe for good. “Everyone needs this experience at least once in their life,” Susie says. “I am full of all sorts of information on current trends”. And, while many think they know how to put together an outfit, it’s a lot more complex than you may think. “The world is full of would-be stylists. You need to have a connection with your client, to make them feel comfortable with you. You almost need a degree in Psychology to get the perfect outcome for them,” Susie says. “My client has to have an understanding of her body shape, and very importantly be up for a change.” Susie styles ladies from ages 18 to 80. “There are no limits or boundaries. I will take you to the appropriate shopping centre and stores no matter what your budget is,” Susie says. “I can shop with you if you have a special occasion coming up, for example, a bridal party or gala ball. Or, if you’ve had a lifestyle change; for example if you’re going through a divorce and just want a brand new you, or if you’ve lost weight and are not sure which direction to go in.” Susie says there are a variety of stylists on January 2017

Everybody deserves the rock star experience. I can make a package available to suit your budget and lifestyle. Where are your favourite places to shop on the GC? I am loving Pacific Fair. I usually travel to Europe each year for my shopping fix, but we have Zara, H&M at our fingertips and all high end shopping in one place. My go to with a huge range for my clients is Myer and David Jones for one-stop shopping. How much planning goes into your work with each client? We meet at a shopping centre over coffee and talk body shape and lifestyle. Then, depending on our time together, we hit the shops. Or I can visit the client’s home and do a complete wardrobe audit, giving ideas for a complete capsule wardrobe and what you need to top up and discuss shoes, accessories and current trends. How do clients come to you and what is their motivation – eg a special event or life/wardrobe overhaul? I do have a lot of client referrals. Top tips to DIY style

• Know your shape • Follow the rules: one piece in, one piece out! • Buy a couple of quality pieces each season • Update with cheaper seasonal pieces and accessories

Top 3 wardrobe must haves: • A good well-fitting pair of jeans, preferably dark as this is slimming for bottom-heavy girls • Well tailored work wear: skirt, pant and jacket. • A classic white shirt

Top trends for 2017:

• Boho, off shoulder will still feature for 2017 • Wide leg relaxed pant, team this with a fitted top to balance • Ruffles! Everywhere. Sleeves and hems.

Styling session With Susie “I met my two wonderful clients Margaret and Alli at Cowch Coffee shop at Pacific Fair. We had a chat about their body shape - most people have no idea - and any issues they had with it. Margaret is an inverted triangle and top heavy with not much waistline, so we chatted about defining her shape, keeping the top half neat and creating some volume from the waist down. I gave Margaret some waist definition, which makes you look smaller. Alli is a rectangle, with shoulders and hips the same size, with a slight waist. Similar to my own shape. I worked with Alli to give the illusion she can create a waist, with detailing and shape to where the eye line will go. We shopped in Myer Pacific Fair; they have a very stylish lounge to have fun in and create some amazing looks. First stop was the make-up counter; Estee Lauder for Margaret with the expert help from Chanel, and Napoleon for Alli with Gabby. I find a lot of my girls are stuck in the same makeup rut for years. Then we hit the labels; David Lawrence, Basque and Cue for Margaret; Cooper Street, Wayne Cooper and Sass and Bide for Alli. A great outcome for everyone.”

Save. Our. Skin. Get it looks at why a paramedical skin practitioner – a professional in all things skin - should be on your speed dial, regardless of your age o you go to the hairdresser to have a Brazillian? Surely not,” says Lynette Rouse, founder and educator at SKIN natural science. “You should go to a professional paramedical skin practitioner because their business is skin and the ongoing maintenance of skin health and regeneration”. Lynette says these specialists go far beyond the abilities of a typical weekend department store mud mask. “These are highly trained and licensed professionals who use today’s technologies, with scientifically proven combinations of Aesthetics and home skincare lines. Their prime focus is on improving skin appearance and regeneration of skin cells through focused treatments of conditions including skin conditions, anti-ageing, scarring, skin laxity, wrinkles, moles, liver spots, unwanted hair, skin discoloration, and spider veins.”

When it comes to looking for a skin practitioner Lynette say the best referral is still through word of mouth. “Do you know a friend or observe the women in the next office, who just ooze skin radiance and always look confident and fabulous? In most cases, I would say they go to a skin paramedical practitioner,” she says. “Ask the question discretely as some just like to keep the secret to themselves.” She suggests researching the skin professionals in your area. “Ask family and friends, scan social media, look at the reviews, and see if they are visible to their community,” Lynette says. “What sort of equipment and condition is in use, are you in a hygienic environment? Do they offer packages? Can they tailor a plan that meets your budget?” When you do enter a skin clinic, Lynette recommends looking around to view awards and training certifications – if visible – or see if they can be seen on request. She says a skin consultation is an important time for a client and their practitioner to get to know each other “and your skin”. “Be honest with your replies as, to the

trained eye, we can usually see straight away if you are using the right product for your skin type and if there are any underlying concerns. “After cleansing and examining your skin, and discussing any concerns, the skin practitioner will develop a plan towards skin health regeneration which suits you, your budget and concerns with time frames.”

GET IT I HEALTH

Are markets the key to your health? Sam Beau Patrick, is a nutritionist and real food advocate, discusses the importance of market shopping and reveals her dream for the Gold Coast old Coast City, Healthiest City in the World”. How good would it be to read that heading in two years time? The Gold Coast is a place people want to move to for lifestyle, healthy living and to raise their children. Contributing to the “health” and the urban shift of the Gold Coast has been our markets. The food, the farmers and the organic movement makes us feel good, and the locals love them. There are more than eight regular markets on the Gold Coast each weekend. So what’s so good about markets? Firstly you get to meet the person who grows your veggies and food. I tell my kids, these are the most important people in their lives. These people make

food so we can be healthy, so we can live without nutrient deficiencies and disease (as experienced in other countries) and feel alive. Getting to know your “grower” is also cool They will tell you all about the weather, what happened on the farm over the week, and will bring you closer to the source of your food. Shopping at fresh markets means you only get what is in season This is perfect as Mother Nature knows what we need in certain seasons. As the weather cools off, we need more vitamin D rich foods, and these will be “in season”. In summer more water dense foods are abundent. I love it and tailor my salads to what is available. Visiting markets and engaging with the community When Dan Buettner studied healthy populations around the world (look up The Blue Zones), he discovered that having a “sense of community and belonging” was instrumental in one’s health. Imagine knowing and trusting that the 21

food you get from the markets is nearly as good as growing it yourself on your own organic farm? Knowing that someone cares so much about you and your family that they have committed to live a tough existence – working sunset to sunrise seven days a week - is worth supporting. I would love to see every Gold Coaster shopping every weekend at their local markets. Let’s make our city one of the healthiest in Australia - which I think we are - then go for the world. Let’s support our local farmers, say yes to organic and enjoy the magic life we have on the Gold Coast. TIME for TEA Who doesn’t love a chance to get dressed in your favourite frock and enjoy some scrumptious treats in a stunning setting with some fun company? Get it gets the low down on where to go for high tea from High Tea Society ichelle Milton pretty much has what many people would consider as a dream job. National and international travel, visiting glamorous hotels, and being waited on hand and foot as she samples decadent high tea offerings to review for her website High Tea Society. As the founder and editor of the website and its social media community, Melbourne-based Michelle - a marketing communications consultant and entrepreneur - has a team of ten contributors who do high tea reviews from around the world. The website, created by Michelle in 2008, also features a High Tea Venue Directory and now has an audience of over 90,000 subscribers, and social media fans and followers. “I loved going for high tea when I lived in London but when I moved to Melbourne I found it difficult to find good high tea venues. Blogging was becoming a thing back then [in 2008] so I started a little blog documenting my search for great high tea experiences,” Michelle says of how it all began. She has worked with brands including Twinings, Myer Mural Hall, Wedgwood, Sydney Opera House, Virgin Atlantic, and more. Visit: highteasociety.com CUSTOMS HOUSE 399 QUEEN STREET, BRISBANE P: 3365 8921 Situated in Brisbane’s CBD right on the river, our table overlooked the stunning Story Bridge – an icon and much loved feature of Brisbane’s skyline. For me the highlight was the Queensland sand crab with sweet ginger dressing in a cucumber cup. An explosion of flavours and textures in my mouth, this pint sized cup left us wanting more. It’s especially nice to see an iconic building like this one featuring local flavours in their high tea, and nothing screams Queensland more than sand crab. We were also served a glass of Veuve Clicquot Champagne, fresh orange juice and a selection of La Malson du The (French handcrafted tea selection). The sweet selection of this high tea was quite vast with already topped scones with cream and fresh raspberries. The other desserts were quite nice, the macarons in particular were lovely but the confit strawberry, mascarpone and biscotti were January 2017

a highlight for me. This dessert was deliciously creamy and tart – the balance was perfect and the biscotti offered a beautiful bit of texture. PASSIONTREE VELVET LEVEL 2, K222, 322 MOGGILL RD, INDOOROOPILLY SHOPPING CENTRE, BRISBANE P: 3378 3077 Passiontree Velvet offers a wide selection of Harney and Sons tea – and I can never go past the Darjeeling, while my guest ordered the Earl Grey. Specialising in macarons, as part of the Duchess High Tea, guests are also able to select one macaron each from their vast selection. The bottom tier had an assortment of simple finger sandwiches of ham, cucumber and tuna and smoked salmon canapés. While the sandwiches were tasty, it was the canapés that really wowed. The middle tier served the traditional scones (your choice of plain or fruit) with strawberry jam and cream. The top tier was a delight for the senses – the beautiful colours, the sweet smells, textures and taste. The berry white chocolate mousses, topped with miniature macarons. The apple crumble tart was nice and the lemon meringue was delicious but extremely rich. It was our salted peanut butter and passion fruit macarons that stole the show. The staff were lovely and while the venue is not as elegant as a fancy hotel, the atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming and value for money was definitely achieved. SOFITEL BRISBANE 249 TURBOT ST, BRISBANE – JUST ABOVE CENTRAL STATION P: 3835 3535 Greeted by friendly staff, we were seated in the Executive Club Lounge, one of three places you can take high tea at the Sofitel. The room was modern and minimalistic, full of natural light with floor to ceiling windows that showcased the Brisbane city. We were served a glass of sparkling wine. There is a vast range of Romefeldt teas on offer. 22

Please contact the venue for booking and pricing information. Review edited excerpts from High Tea Society. Visit the website for each review in full.

We opted to have two three tiered stands served to us – one gluten free and one not. Served on slate the top tier was decorated with French pastries perfectly put together by French-Australian pastry chef Didier Richerux. On my guest’s gluten free stand some items were slightly different with the bottom tier’s scones swapped for friands, meringue and a biscuit. While my top tier of French pastries boasted a delicate cherry mouse cone on a sable biscuit – my friend’s was on a piece of chocolate. Both slates had a delectable piece of chocolate and pistachio sacher torte and while my slate had a vanilla profiterole with crème patissiere and fresh berries, my friend’s had a gorgeous piece of flowerless orange and almond slice topped with poached fig. For me, the hero of the high tea was the six ribbon sandwiches. QT GOLD COAST LOCATION: FIXX CAFÉ, QT HOTEL GOLD COAST, 7 STAGHORN AVENUE, SURFERS PARADISE P: 5584 1200 With its funky vibe and cool atmosphere, it’s no surprise that the QT Hotel Gold Coast’s quirkiness extends to its high tea offering. Cheeky “so Gold Coast” inclusions in this high tea include a bikini babe (shortbread biscuit with zingy lemonade icing), dark chocolate lips and a Gold Coast thong – of the flip flop variety, not underwear (dark chocolate base with a peach blood orange mousse centre, white chocolate strap and a marshmallow flower). What appears to be your typical finger sandwich was actually a faux ham and cheese sandwich. The sweet dish is actually a French Madeline sponge with a vanilla crème and peach gel inside. The red macaron – which you’d be forgiven for thinking might taste like a sweet meringue-based confection – was in fact savoury! The tomato macaron features tomato consommé gel, cream cheese and basil from QT’s garden. The fantastic array of sweet and savoury treats are paired with your choice of teas from T2 or you can add a little something extra to your experience by sipping on some delicious Champagne Perrier-Jouet. 23

Game on, Gold Coast!

Michael Crandon, State Member for Coomera

Rob Molhoek, State Member for Southport

And of course the rugby, it’s such a great game to watch!

Get it’s Hayley Bogaard talks to Rob Molhoek and Michael Crandon about the excitement surrounding the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games he Gold Coast is pretty fabulous, we know that and you know that. And in 2018, the rest of the world is going to find out for themselves with the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games hitting our shores. More than 6600 athletes and team officials from 70 nations will descend upon the city with dreams of sporting glory and with them, hundreds of thousands of domestic and international tourists. The games will showcase 70 sports and seven para-sports and will be broadcast to a global audience of 1.5 billion. Pretty impressive, right? So impressive in fact, that the Gold Coast is the first ever non-capital city to successfully win the bid for the Commonwealth Games, thrusting our beautiful city onto the global stage. We spoke to Rob Molhoek, State Member for Southport, and Michael Crandon, State Member for Coomera, about what the games really mean for Gold Coast locals. Rob Molhoek, State Member for Southport What does an opportunity like hosting the games really mean for the Gold Coast? From a local perspective, this is a once in a generation opportunity for everyone to have affordable access to a major world event. This will be the largest event – both in the sporting and general categories – in the Southern Hemisphere this decade. It’s not every day you get to be a part of that. There will be January 2017

opportunities to meet people from all over the world and engage with different cultures, which will be so beneficial for expanding the worldview of the locals. What can Gold Coast residents do to really make the most of this opportunity? Short of literally going overseas and experiencing the world, this is the best opportunity for Gold Coast locals to immerse themselves in international culture and experiences. There will be opportunities to host people from overseas and to volunteer as well as a significant calendar of social and civic events leading into and after the games. It’s worth our locals taking the time to really take in what the games have to offer. Save up some money in the lead up, take some leave and really breathe it in and live it. Take your kids along to the events as these world-class athletes will become heroes to our kids and our kids need positive role models who can inspire them and fuel their dreams. This is an amazing opportunity to bring the world to our own doorstep. On a personal level, what events are you most excited to see live? I have to say the swimming! Everyone loves the swimming and it’s such a great event to see. 24

Michael Crandon, State Member for Coomera Aside from the obvious, why should Gold Coast locals be excited for the games? While every one of our locals has a reason to be excited, none more so than the residents of the Northern Gold Coast who are recipients of the 40 million dollar Coomera Indoor Sports Complex. The complex, which has actually already been completed, will provide facilities for sports such as netball, volleyball, futsal, gymnastics and basketball. The truth is, without the Commonwealth Games, the Northern Gold Coast would never have been the benefactor of such an incredible sporting complex. What will this mean for the Northern Gold Coast leading up to, and beyond, the games? The Coomera Indoor Sporting complex will be a hub of activity for local families and communities and in fact, has already attracted around 5000 hours worth of bookings between now and the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games for a huge range of sporting and community events and this will only increase following the exposure the games will bring to the Gold Coast. This is such a unique opportunity to put our beautiful part of the world on the global stage. Which sports are you most excited to see when the games arrive? I’ve got to say athletics is the one event our family is most excited for. My two children have grown up in athletics so it will be great for them to see world-class athletes in action. There aren’t many places in the world that are going to be able to showcase themselves but also bring such high prestige athletes at the number that we’re talking about coming to the Gold Coast. It’s a very exciting opportunity.

The shocking domestic violence statistics in our region cannot be ignored. Thankfully there is a long list of generous Gold Coasters who are showing their support to those impacted by such traumatic events. In the first of our three-part series shining the spotlight on domestic violence, we feature a local charity making a huge impact. n between her full time work as a Clinical Nurse with Gold Coast Health and her role as a wife and mother, Manuela Whitford also manages to run self-funded charity Friends With Dignity. The charity has provided 175 ‘Sanctuaries’ to domestic violence survivors and their families in the last 12 months and has responded to 127 ‘Urgent Requests’ and 23 ‘Little Friend Requests’. Run solely by a dedicated board of passionate volunteers, Friends With Dignity not only supports domestic violence victims by providing tangible goods, but also raises awareness of the issue through fundraising events and educating the community on the latest, terrifying statistics. In 2015, 78,000 domestic violence incidents were reported in Queensland alone, with one in three women being affected in their lifetime and two women dying every week in Australia at the hands of their partner or ex-partner. “We have more than 140 registered volunteers, no paid positions and all funds raised go straight back to the families and services we assist,” Maneula, the charity’s CEO and Founder, says. The mother of three, says Friends With Dignity started on the 1st of September 2015 and has expanded its services throughout South East Queensland and Newcastle. Manuela was previously the co-founder of 'Assist a Sista Australia'. “Having started it from scratch, developing most policies and seeing the difference it was making to people’s lives there was no doubt that when [Assist a Sista] ceased I had to step up and continue,” she says. Manuela says the initial concept of helping domestic violence victims came to her when she worked in prisons in 2010. “[I heard] stories of women committing crimes intentionally to escape the terror of their reality and finding refuge within the prison system. I could not comprehend how people would purposely instigate criminal activity to feel ‘safe’,” she says. “When I received a call from a friend who knew of a woman travelling from Perth to the GC, on a train, with four children, I did January 2017

not hesitate and went straight into action.” “With a personal call out to the few friends I had, the response was phenomenal. Social media does have its benefits! We managed to source everything from white goods to furniture, clothing and food. My children even sorted through their toys to ensure the children were happy.” Now, Friends With Dignity calls upon the public via social media to source pre-loved and new household items that are then placed into the survivor’s new house to help rebuild their life. Working in close proximity with refuges and crisis centres predominately in South East Queensland, a team of Friends with Dignity volunteers will then transform the space into a furnished safe home – into a ‘sanctuary’. Friends with Dignity focus on providing support to domestic survivors through four core programs: Sanctuaries – providing furnished safe houses, Urgent Requests – providing urgent items within 24 hours, The Little Friends Program – specifically for children to help transition at ease, and Community Engagement – conducting toy drives, fundraisers and more. “Friends With Dignity volunteers and donors have completed 175 Sanctuaries - and about 50 per cent of those are on the Gold Coast,” Manuela says. “We assisted in painting and furnishing a Gold Coast refuge which now houses four women and their children. “Another amazing case for me was having received an offer from a family whom we assisted earlier this year, who was ready to ‘pay it forward’. This lady had managed to secure a job and was re-placing all of her donated items with her new purchased goods. Having had the help she received from absolute strangers she wanted to do the same. “We never meet the families we assist and often don’t hear of them again so for us this was confirmation that what we are doing is working and highlighted that the spirit of giving has equal, if not more, impact than receiving.” Visit: friendswithdignity.org.au 30

Fast forward to 2014, and ‘Baker Girl Lou’ as she’s known to her loyal customers, had bought out her business partner after their working relationship had broken down. “Without that partnership, Cake 2 The Rescue would not have been able to achieve such a high level of product development and market awareness in such a short space of time,” says Lou, now the company’s owner and operator. “I guess we all start our business relationships on a high, the excitement of starting something new, launching your baby to the world means that all the sensible, boring legal stuff can get left in the ‘to do later’ or ‘not in the budget’ pile. “In hindsight the reality is that it’s much easier to set the ground rules, expectations and agree on an exit plan when the business is new and worth very little. “Similar to a marriage, partnerships tend to start fresh with no baggage and a heap of good will, but once you add history, money and a lot of blood, sweat and tears, peoples’ perspectives change and it’s easy to end up in a messy ‘divorce’, despite your initial intentions.” Lou said she and her business partner had very different opinions on how the business should be run and could not see a way forward working together. “After initial discussions about selling or closing the business, I made the decision to buy out my partner and continue running the business.” Lou says taking on her partner’s duties, as well as her existing responsibilities, was a massive undertaking. “Usually business partners have very different skill sets and in my case, I had to very quickly expand my marketing skills,” Lou says. One of the greatest challenges Lou says she has experienced since breaking the partnership has been learning to trust people again and to let them into her business. "Collaboration is key to growing a small business and it’s taken two years to have the confidence to allow others to help support the future direction of the company”. 31

KEYS TO A SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS PARTNERSHIP: Trust and honesty. Open communication: If you aren’t happy with something, you need to have the confidence to speak up. If you cannot be 100 per cent honest with your partner then you shouldn’t go into business with them. l Documented expectations with regard to finances, responsibilities, and holidays. l Clear exit plan for peace of mind. l Uneven distribution of ownership or third party. l

STOP! IN THE NAME OF BUSINESS In 2012 Gold Coast businesswoman Melissa Groom started Mums in Business Australia; a women's networking group on the Gold Coast to support mums in business. She also started the Facebook page named Mums in Business Australia. “We were inundated with messages [from people] asking how they could start up their own networking group. So I looked into the legalities to do this and realised I would need to own the trademark to be able to franchise or license the networking groups. I then realised, after doing a search through ASIC, that somebody already owned the trademark,” Mel says. Mel then did further searches online to find not a lot of activity under the business name in question. “I made attempts to contact the owner of the trademark - who had a postal address on the Gold Coast - but I did not receive a reply. I finally tracked her down on Facebook and found she was residing in England but had a PO box here. She offered to rent the name to me but, knowing how big I wanted to take this, I decided to rebrand.” Mel says she was concerned how the rebrand might affect her business – particularly sponsors and members – but says, thankfully, “everyone understood”. “I shared my learning experience and biggest lesson with them and rebranded to Empowered Mums Business Network,” Mel says. She highly recommends that anyone starting a business – “no matter how big or small you anticipate growing” – does their due diligence and checks with ASIC “to see if someone owns the trademark before you register a domain name or business name”. “Call ASIC to make sure [your business name] isn’t too close. Also, if you are registering a trademark, contact a Trademark Lawyer.” January 2017

GET IT I SOCIAL MEDIA

Social Media: you're doing it wrong! Get it’s social media manager Hayley Bogaard breaks down social media, in the final instalment of our series e are all guilty of a few little social media faux pas – that shameless gym selfie, the overindulgent sharenting and the incessant inspirational quotes? So we can forgive a little slip up here and there. But when it comes to your business page, cyberspace will not be so forgiving. Never fear, I’ve got a few hard truths that may sting at first, but I promise will help your business in the long run. THE LINES ARE BLURRED You wouldn’t pull out 10 different photos of your new niece in store and tell your customers about how she projectile vomited on you last week – right? Well, the same goes for social media. Keep your business page and your private page separate. While there are exceptions when sharing more personal content on your business page is very beneficial, for example a travel agent sharing photos from their latest holiday, generally you should keep the tragic love quotes and drunken selfies private. YOUR JOKES AREN’T FUNNY. SERIOUSLY. The most important component for your social media pages is relevant and engaging content and, believe it or not, that doesn’t include that joke about dumb blondes that Uncle Gary told at Christmas lunch. Was it funny? Sure. Is it relevant to your business? Absolutely not. Your business page should include a range of suitable and interesting January 2017

content, both related to your product or services and general lifestyle content, which will appeal to your audience. Avoid irrelevant jokes, personal interests, political and religious content and silly memes - those you can just send my way. PACE YOURSELF Remember, Rome wasn’t built in a day and neither was your social media page. While it may be tempting to go postcrazy on a quiet Tuesday afternoon and bombard your customers with every cute photo, quote and product image you have, this is ultimately a waste of your time and detrimental to engaging with your followers. Try and schedule your posts throughout the week, with up to three per day and ensure that you are posting at peak times, when followers are most active online. PUT THE CREDIT CARD DOWN Unless you’re buying that new season pair of Louboutins, put the credit card down now and back away. While Facebook advertising and boosting may seem like the answer to all your prayers – it’s easy and everyone else is doing it – it can actually be a huge waste of your time and money. Paid content on social media is a really effective way to promote your products and build your audience but it must be done in a strategic way to actually see a return on your investment. But if you really just enjoy throwing your money away, I can send you my bank account details. 32

IT’S ALL ABOUT YOUR BRAND, BABY! Okay, now I’m going to throw a really hard truth at you: social media is not a sales machine. Yes, effective social media will engage your audience and subsequently build sales but what social media is really about is building relationships with your audience and developing your brand. Every piece of content you post contributes to your online brand, from what you say, to the images you post and the colours you use. Build your brand effectively and the people will come, and with them comes the sales. When in doubt, sit back and change your perspective. Your business’ social media page isn’t about you – it’s about your audience. What would your audience want to see? And if you still find yourself posting that dumb blonde joke from Uncle Gary, please call me, I promise I can help.

How to make this your healthiest year ever Now is the perfect time to make some changes you’ll thank yourself for later, according to Jeff Osborne, manager of Vision Bundall obody ever gets in great shape, cleans up their food habits, exercises regularly and then a few months or years down the track regrets it. Nobody! The effort you put into being healthier makes you feel better, perform better, and look better. And, it turns out to be something you are proud of. If you think those fit looking people on Instagram look too happy, it’s probably because they are. So how do you make it happen? Don’t use holidays or celebrations as an excuse to blow out It may be tempting to get a case of the ‘screwits’ and throw January down the drain, but it not only makes it psychologically tougher to get going when life returns to normality, it also makes your body better at storing fat rather than burning it. My advice is to have fun and don’t restrict yourself but take your chances to eat well when you can. Eat a good protein rich breakfast, back down the carbs a bit during the day and only drink when you need to (not just because there is left over wine in the fridge). Spend the time getting prepared In a comprehensive book on willpower by Kelly McGonigal, the author argues that we have a willpower muscle that, like all muscles, will get tired and give in if it is made to work hard all day. Save your will power for important decisions. Spending three hours on a Sunday buying, chopping and preparing food will seem like a lot of effort, but when it saves you - on average 45 minutes a day (five hours a week) - it's time well spent. The first step is to get some of your favourite cook books, websites and apps and go through and find a selection of about 3-7 breakfast ideas, 5-10 lunch ideas, 5-10 snack ideas and 10-15 dinner ideas. Then write out a sample week and work out how much of each you would need. For example my favourite breakfast is a ham and vegetable omelette. I need one egg, four egg whites, 100g ham, 50g mushroom, 50g capsicum, five cherry tomatoes, 50g onion, two asparagus spears, and 50g zucchini. If I have that five mornings a week then I would purchase five eggs, a carton of egg whites, 500g ham, 250g mushrooms and so on. I then chop that up on the Sunday so all I need to do is pour it into the pan to cook. At Vision we have a great app (Vision Virtual Training) that you can plan your meals for the week, cut and paste meals over multiple days, get meal ideas from a database of more than 1000 recipes and then print your shopping list for the selected dates. This makes it super easy to have - and stick to - a plan. Make dinners easy To eat like royalty at dinner try this easy trick. Plan the protein serve you will use for the days of the week. Then in your vegetable drawer in your fridge clean it out, chop your salad up (all the lettuce, capsicum, cucumber, onion, mushroom and so on) and place it in the draw with a wet tea towel over the top of it. Make sure every few days the tea towel is still wet and that salad will stay crispy and fresh for over a week. Then at dinner time, cook your protein, serve it up and leave the huge salad bowl in the middle for everyone to pick at.This worked especially well with my kids who got curious about all the different veggies and discovered they loved cucumber (and started fighting over it!). Or, the pro tip is to make a Jamie Oliver-like board and lay the cooked chicken or steak over the salad. January 2017

Know your weaknesses Understand and know where you are likely to struggle and plan around it. If you know a particular friend or place that presents temptations do something to prepare for it. Eat beforehand, be the designated driver or, if you are desperate, pour yourself sparkling water with a splash of apple juice so they think you are having champagne. Remind yourself of why you are doing it Have a reminder. A person, a picture, a phrase, a quote, anything that will keep you focused on why you are doing it. Set up proximity reminders on your phone so when you go to certain locations you get the reminder. You could also rename your alarm to your why. Remember… it will all be worth it! You get what you pay for with hearing tests Those “free” hearing tests aren’t always what they seem, according to Clarity Hearing Solutions dvertising for “Free Hearing Tests” is very common these days so it is important to understand the different types of basic hearing tests commonly used. Most “free” hearing tests are what’s called screening tests. These are basic pass or fail tests designed to find out if you suffer from hearing loss. These kinds of tests are also available as free downloads from app stores or online. It requires little or no skill to administer, which is why they are free. In these screening tests, four different beep tones are presented at a level considered to be within normal limits and if you hear it, you pass. These tests can be extremely inaccurate and many people with normal hearing end up failing them. The screening can also be affected by ambient noise, incorrect administration, equipment issues, and finally (and unfortunately) results being skewed by administrators due to commissions being paid for failed screenings. The next step after a hearing screen is to get a basic hearing assessment to see if there is indeed a hearing loss, how severe it might be and to investigate what area of the hearing system the problem may stem from. Because this is a significantly more timeconsuming test and relies on the skillset of

clinician there is usually a charge. This can be upfront or is commonly built into the price of hearing aids. This second assessment finds the point where you just start hearing different pitched beeps through a set of headphones. By measuring this we test how sound is being detected through the outer ear, middle ear and inner ear. This is known as air conduction. We then find these points again with a special set of headphones called a bone conductor. The bone conductor directs the beeps to the inner ear without going through the outer and middle ear. If we get the same results with bone and air conduction we know the middle ear and outer ear are letting all the sound through to the inner ear. So if there is a hearing loss it’s in the inner ear. If there is difference between the bone and the air conduction results then we know the middle or outer ear is the source of the hearing problem. The information obtained in conjunction with other assessments is then used for either two purposes, to find out where and what the problem is, and to assist with treatment with hearing aids and/ or implantable technology. If the information is for diagnostic reasons it is only the first step to help ascertain if any other areas of the ear or

auditory/balance system are affected as on its own it does not tell us what could be causing the problem and does not assist with formulating treatment options. Most importantly this test does not measure the difficulties you are experiencing with communication or the impairment the hearing loss may be giving. A rehabilitation assessment focuses on assessing not just the hearing but also the impairment and communication difficulties you may be facing. It does use some of the same assessments as a diagnostic assessment, but also includes a lot of tests that measure other things important to communication such as auditory processing and cognition, to name but a few. It is the combination of these latter tests that ensure you get the right treatment for your hearing problems. Those “free” hearing tests are mostly just to get you through the door. GET IT I FITNESS

FIGHTING FIT The battle lines are drawn and Get it is finding out who comes out on top in the battle between old school training and new school.

New school vs In the red corner, we have our protein-drinking, supplement-taking new school fitness followers. In the blue corner, the old school blood, sweat and tears warriors. Which side do you take in the new school vs old school fitness contest? IN THE RED CORNER, NEW-SCHOOL In their natural environment, you’re likely to find a new school gym buff mixing up his BCAA’s, prepping his vegan, organic weekly meals and carefully formulating his workouts between resistance training and HIIT. These new school trainers have taken health and fitness to a whole new – and quite scientific – level. They focus on overall health for mind, body and soul and have a much higher focus on nutrition and supplements than in decades gone by. No longer is getting fit just about pumping iron and running for miles, but it is now about transforming your body through careful planning and an understanding of your body’s needs. Professionals in the new school arena no longer stand around barking orders to push harder and longer at the weights bench, but rather take a personalised approach to understanding their client’s needs. A large component of this style of training is dietary supplements, products that are taken to fill a nutritional deficiency and enhance the body’s health and performance. You’ll be hard pressed to find a gym on the Gold Coast without at least 10 men standing around drinking their pre-workout, post-workout or somewherein-the-middle workout. These particular supplements - which are one-step up from January 2017

your standard protein powder – contain of mix of ingredients designed to boost your energy and ensure you get the most from your workout. Let’s be honest, the major ingredient is often caffeine so it gives a similar reaction to a 5-year-old on a sugar high. But the new schoolers swear by it. Beyond just the dedication to protein shakes and supplements, is a new form of dietary lifestyle. The new-school trainers stand strongly by the saying that abs are made in the kitchen – the organic, glutenfree, vegan kitchen to be precise. Meal prepping is big, with enthusiasts preparing all their nutritionally balanced breakfasts, lunches, dinners and snacks a week in advance. These meals are high-protein, lowcarb and packed with essential fatty acids and vitamins. The new school contenders respect the wisdom of those that came before them but argue that old school just doesn’t cut it any more. Health and fitness is not about lifting the heaviest weights or running the fastest mile, but about being happy and healthy in mind, body and soul. And having cheesegrater abs. Over to the old-school boys… 36

Chris Katen, 34, from Mudgeeraba prescribes to a new-school training philosophy and believes that the body needs diversity for overall health. “I am not a huge fan on spending too much time in the gym so I limit my gym time to once or twice a week. I have an athletics park just down the road from my house so I use that twice a week for running, and use the parks in Broadbeach and North Burleigh as well,” he says. Chris focuses on a healthy lifestyle, which includes carefully considering his food intake and the use of supplements when needed. “A pre-workout can be good if you're tired and not really keen on training. It wakes you up and assists getting you in the mood to train. I also think the supplements which help you rehydrate are good for running.” When it comes to training, he likes to mix it up and his weekly program includes interval sprints, strength and conditioning training, kick boxing and a variety of team sports. “I started doing interval sprints when I met an ultra-marathon runner and Physio, Mark Barrett. The sessions are designed to help you lose weight as well as build your bodies "engine". These sessions dramatically improved my fitness and assisted with long distance running.”

old school training IN THE BLUE CORNER, OLD-SCHOOL You won’t catch the old-school trainers posting shameless gym selfies, battling with awkward exercise equipment and sipping on a protein shake straight from the shaker bottle. Their philosophy is simple: work hard and get results. And quite honestly, the proof is in the pudding (which they are actually allowed to eat!). The old-school attitude to training focuses heavily on weight training and building body mass. In the 1950’s, the gym scene was divided between those that lifted weights and those that stretched and used cable machines. In typical oldschool fashion, the latter was seen as a waste of time. Another popular technique for the oldschool trainers is fight training – boxing in particular. Not only is boxing a great cardiovascular and strength-training workout, it is ideal for relieving some of that built up stress and testosterone. Boxers such as Mike Tyson and Muhammad Ali were fierce fighters, both agile and strong – you may even say they float like a butterfly, sting like a bee? Old-school training represents a much more masculine physique – think Arnold Schwarzenegger – compared to today’s lean, mean machines. They don’t count their body fat percentage – they are far too busy actually lifting weights – and they certainly don’t stop to take a seflie post-

workout. They are characterised by small waists with clearly defined abdominals, big chests, wide lats, big shoulders, and big arms. While old-schoolers don’t mess around with counting grams of protein and ‘magic’ shakes, they do appreciate the importance of nutrition. Their approach to nutritional is more natural, getting what they need from real foods such as eggs, bananas, carrots and the old favourite, chicken breast. The old school buffs argue that new school trainers put too much reliance on ‘magic’ potions and ‘pick me ups’ and should just stick to some good old fashioned hard work. Forget all the fad diets, silly gym equipment and protein shaker bottles - the gym is a place for hard work, dripping sweat and occasional tears.

Well, there you have it folks. The lines have been drawn and it’s time to pick a side: new school or old school? Just one question though: which school allows the most wine? We’re on that team… 37

Nariman Karimi, 58, from Benowa is a member of team old school and believes strongly in hard work and healthy choices. Nariman says he likes training at the small local gym as he finds “if the gym is too fancy, too big or too far I end up not going after a while. The important thing is that it is local, it is clean and it is safe”. He promotes simple, healthy choices when it comes to nutrition, arguing that too many trainers waste their time with supplements. “There is too much reliance on ‘boosters' and ‘pick-me-ups’ at times. For some the average kit bag resembles a mobile chemistry set with the main hub being in their bedside table full of pills and powders.” “Water is best! Unless you are competing or need to overcome some kind of fatigue, I don’t think any of the pre, post and during workout supplements are essential.“ Nariman says that when it comes to old-school vs new school, the goals are different, although both groups want to ‘look good’ and be healthy. “The difference is my age group are happy to be able to wear a pair of jeans and a tee shirt without resembling ‘a sack of spanners’, while many of the young men in particular are striving to resemble a ‘rock on the move’.”

H CAPRICORN December 22 – January 20 Self-discovery is a big part of the story this month. Both Mercury retrograde and the Sun in your sign encourage you to explore personal healing or a project that has been on the back burner for some time. From the 13th, adopting a flexible attitude may prompt you to enjoy experiences outside your comfort zone, paving the way for an adventurous year ahead.

H GEMINI May 21 – June 21 Mercury winds up his retrograde cycle on the 7th, easing delays, set-backs or false starts to your New Year. Success with your resolutions are likely if you leave making them until then. The 29th/30th are powerful days as Pluto asks you to dive deep and get practical about where you’re headed, especially in regard to finances. Formulate a plan and stick with it to ensure your success.

Saturn casts a watchful eye, helping you to avoid excessive retail therapy.

H CANCER June 21 – July 22 The Full Moon in your sign on the 12th will highlight what is most important to you. As jolly Jupiter makes an aspect of adjustment to the Moon, you’ll be encouraged to make changes to your beliefs, traditions or rituals. Decisions made now will help lay down the foundation for the changes you wish to manifest for 2017.

H PISCES February 19 – March 20 Action planet Mars tours your sign for the first time in 2 years this January. This much- needed boost to your energy and drive will set the tone for a year of progress and action. You’re offered the confidence to move forward on something you’ve only dreamt about. Personal projects or passions close to your heart will help you attract love, abundance and love.

H LEO July 22 – August 23 The Sun makes tracks through your relationship sector from the 20th. The New Moon on the 28th will encourage new beginnings in love. Authenticity about what you want in romance is highlighted under the unconventional energy of Aquarius. Venus and Saturn encourage clarity

about your relationships status. Mercury and Pluto prompt deep and honest conversations about what you both want. H VIRGO August 23 - September 22 You’ll feel back on track once your ruler, Mercury, ends his retrograde phase and then enters the fellow earth sign of Capricorn. The first fortnight is ideal to strategise, make plans and manifest. Take action once Mercury is in the clear after the 13th. The 29th/30th is will reveal deep insights regarding a romance, children or your creative outlets. H LIBRA September 22 – October 23 Venus, your patron planet makes a tricky aspect with reality focused Saturn on the 28th. This will bring into crisp view about what you may need to adjust to reach your best potential. Feeling stretched between varying responsibilities may force you to reduce obligations. Take extra care of your health, wellbeing and the self-care rituals you know work so well for you.

H SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 Fun, frivolity and romance is the name of the game as 2017 starts, as your ruler Mars, makes tracks through your 5th house. Venus and Neptune also connect in this part of your solar chart making the 13th the most romantic day of all. Indulging in your creative pursuits, the arts and music will bring pure joy into your life experience. H SAGITTARIUS Nov 22 – Dec 22 A link of manifestation between your ruler Jupiter and serious Saturn on the 2nd, will help you make plans for 2017. Seemingly opposing energies will blend beautifully, assisting you in bringing a vision, a goal or a dream into reality. Erratic Uranus in the mix will also bring about new opportunities or sudden changes to the plan. Anything is possible this January.

GET IT I LAST WORD

Man cleanse?

What in the world is that? ou wouldn’t even read about it … well, you would, here. You’ll read just about everything on these pages. Every single ex I think I’ve ever known has contacted me recently. Even exes of exes contacted me. Yes, that’s right. What’s with that? That’s never happened before. Once they are an ex, I never hear from them again, or see them. Who’d want to? They are an ex for a reason, after all, right? Literally in one month, my most recent exes got in touch. All but two. Then a month later, one of the two called and left a drunken message: something about how super cute I am and that I have no idea how super cute I am, but he does. He knows exactly how super cute I am. Actually, it made me laugh out loud. I had absolutely no idea who it was, so I called the number back and got his voicemail: “Hi, it’s ‘Simon*’, leave me a message.” Beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep. *Names changed to protect drunk caller. Who the beep is Simon*, I wondered. God, I hope it’s not a stalker who’s found my name and number on the internet. {Quickly draws blinds}. Naturally, I call my bestie.“Who’s Simon*? Do you know a Simon*?,” I ask. “He called and left me a ‘super cute’ voicemail message, but I …… Ohhhhhhh, Simmmmmon*.” {Penny drops}. Simon*. One of the two exes who hadn’t been in touch, just got in touch.

Elizabeth Campbell is going to make 2017 a year to remember with or without a man cleanse

Just waiting on the last one now. Not really. In all seriousness though, I have always been of the opinion that exes are exes for a reason and I don’t go backward. And this year I’m only going forward. In fact, at the end of last year I went on a man cleanse. I actually had no idea what that was, but I overheard two women at the café talking about it and I thought maybe it’s some new celeb thing and decided I’d give it a shot. I didn’t need the distraction of dating anyway. I was just happy to focus on my business. So maybe I should have looked up what a man cleanse was exactly. Apparently it’s not a new thing and has been around since at least 2011, so the internet says. DEFINITION: After being on a bunch of bad dates and in relationships that are headed nowhere, one goes on a man cleanse. Ok, so it’s like a diet. I’ve never been good at diets. Like the time when I was in Year 9 and decided to “go vegetarian”.A vegetarian who only ate chicken. Or the time I decided to become a vegan but got bored of salad and gave up after I got hammered for wearing leather shoes. So, a man cleanse. A lifestyle free of men. I was OK with that until I also got hammered by my friends about “cutting myself off from love”. What is this The Bachelor? Geez. I’m not doing that, I’m just having a break. Like when you eat too much ice cream and feel sick, you need a break! Even a stranger gave me a drilling about it when I mentioned it. It was like that vegan

thing all over again. Her: So are you single? Me: Er, yes. I am. But I’m on a man cleanse at the moment. Her: Why would you do that? Why would you cut yourself off like that? You can tell me to get stuffed but I think… Me: OK then, get stuffed. Her: <insert stunned look on here>. At the start of every year, I commit to getting rid of a whole bunch of stuff that doesn’t serve me well any more and start the year fresh. So there’s a couple of things I’m NOT going to do this year. 1. I’m not going to tell people about things they might consider drastic, like a man cleanse. 2. I’m not getting back with any exes. 3. I’m not going on a man cleanse. Been there done that. Here’s what I will do though: 1. I will still try different and funky things even if I don’t know the definition of them. 2. I may consider speaking to any ex that gets in touch. But only if I feel like it. 3. I will leave myself open to “finding love”. I will also work less, play more and have more Liz time. This year is going to be the Year of Liz. It’s time I put myself first, make myself happy and do things that will benefit me first and foremost. That goes for business and pleasure. Happy New Year, my friends. Let’s make 2017 one to remember!
