ARIAS ON THE GREEN Links Hope Island presents

With 'timeless' in mind I sat down to think about ageing gracefully. Thanks, but no thanks. I want to age as disgracefully as possible. Why can’t we do and say what we like? I think after spending 25 years (times 2) on the planet, it’s about time we take the opportunity to celebrate our inner child. Here’s a few little tips for you to consider. • Paint your nails black — why not? They’ll look great. • Have your eyebrows tattooed and save money on messy powders and pencils. It’s a little scary at first but then you wonder why you didn’t do it years ago. (See my experience on page 22.) • Wear Lycra… in public. Active wear is the new denim. But take note girls, white Lycra should never be worn, ANYWHERE by anyone. • Spend hours on the phone talking to your girlfriends while enjoying a Savvy or two, leaving the housework for another day. It’ll drive the family mad but it’s your time now and I’m sure they know how to use a toaster. • Send a text message to your kids asking them to call you back, and when they do — 24 hours later — answer the phone saying,“City Morgue”. • Join the club of ‘I can’t find my phone’ and then realise while looking for it, you’re talking on it. • Spend a Sunday afternoon with your friends and laugh like you may need an incontinence pad to stop. Laugh lines are life’s greatest gift. • Plan a holiday and don’t take any of your family members with you but send them lots of selfies with random strangers, they’ll think you’ve lost your mind. • When you’re driving, smile at everyone, it messes with their heads. So, all in all girls, I suggest that we celebrate and be proud of our bodies, our successes, our failures and ourselves. Understand and appreciate that you are one of a kind (my children are thankful there’s only one of me as two of me would not necessarily be a good thing but Uncle Dan — i.e. Dan Murphy’s — would love it). We only get one life, live it and do what makes your heart sing!

Leanne Hart CLARIFICATION In the February issue of Get it we touched on ovarian cancer for Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. To clarify, the cancer patient Judith Lovatt whose story appeared on page 30 is not, and has never been, a patient of Dr Marcelo Nascimento’s, who was featured on page 31. The articles ran side by side as they were both about ovarian cancer, but the two persons are not linked in any way.

GET TO THE POINT

Life as a Millennial Yuppie with Anna Davies illennial Yuppie’ [Pronounced: Mil-len-ee-uh- l Yuhp-ee]; a noun describing a young person who likes to have their Chia pudding, and eat it too. You might think that all millennials are lazy, social-media obsessed, kale-eating bohemians with beards longer than the work experience section on their resume. As a millennial, I can say that we aren’t all good-for-nothing hipsters, in fact, some of us are good-for-something hipsters. It is this intersection of personality traits that I call the ‘Millennial Yuppie’, the kind of person that eats kale salads and complains about the housing market but isn’t afraid to put on a pencil skirt or pant suit and get sh*t done. Like with any made-up term, being a Millennial Yuppie is more of a mindset than an actual demographic, which means anyone can live their best Millennial Yuppie life. Just follow these simple steps and you will be well on your way! Step 1: Develop a shameless coffee addiction While a Millennial Hipster may drink turmeric, beetroot, or almond milk lattes, the millennial yuppie recognises that $6 for a coffee is too damn high. Seriously guys, saving for a house is tough enough without this kind of madness. Instead, the Millennial Yuppie drinks a long black. Partially because they read somewhere that two black coffees each day is good for your heart, and partially because it costs a normal amount of money.

Everyday fashion to suit your lifestyle!

Complaining about the housing market is the essential life-force that Millennials feed off, and the Millennial Yuppie is by no means an exception.

Step 2: Meal prep, meal prep, meal prep Not all millennials survive off a steady diet of $25 avocado on toast. Don’t get me wrong, the Millennial Yuppie simply must have one overpriced café meal per week. But for the other 6 days, the Millennial Yuppie ‘meal preps’. Type in ‘meal prep’ into YouTube and you will find the Millennial Yuppie’s bible. There are literally thousands of tutorials, full of healthy, economical recipes that you can make in bulk on a Sunday afternoon and eat throughout the week. Talk about #health and #efficiency. Step 3: Complain about the housing market, then buy a house Complaining about the housing market is the essential lifeforce that Millennials feed off, and the Millennial Yuppie is by no means an exception. However, you can easily spot a Millennial Yuppie when they manage to simultaneously complain about the housing market, while bragging on social media about buying their first ‘investment property’ at the ripe age of 23. Hot tip: they probably tried to ironically use the hashtag #thanksbabyboomers, overlooking the fact that their parents paid for the deposit. 9

guts and grace

March 2018

12

Every single day we unknowingly cross paths with people whose stories are so remarkable and deeply touching that they could be a Hollywood blockbuster or New York Times best seller. One of those people is Runaway Bay local Raia Hanvey. Behind her piercing emerald eyes, the 66-year-old grandmother carries a story of deep, gutwrenching grief. On Easter weekend 1990, Raia, her son, daughter and daughter’s friend were driving home when their car collided head on with an oncoming vehicle. Raia was pulled from the wreckage, deceased, alongside her young daughter, Renee, who didn’t survive. And the series of events, the lifetime of moments and decisions, that led to this moment are just as extraordinary in a story of unwavering guts and grace. was never one to want to get married, and I did not want to have children,” Raia says. “It was not something that was on my list of things to do. I was going to be a top model. It did not go that way but I do not have any regrets, and I certainly do not regret having my children, just in hindsight, that’s how it was.” Raia was married in a flash at 19 while she was a model for Grace Bros, before it became Myer, however, she knew from the get go it wasn’t the right thing to do. “I was living in a share house with three other women who were older than me and one of them brought home this man. I wasn’t interested in him, but within six months we were married,” Raia says. “Do not ask me how! I knew it was a mistake… I knew walking down the aisle it was.” “He was a very polite, beautifully presented man, however, there were parts of him I did not know yet and these came out later in our marriage.” Although Raia was on the pill, she fell pregnant soon after they were married. Raia and her family were not happy about it but her husband’s family were. “It was one of those moments where you knew your life was going to change forever but you were not quite sure how,” Raia says. “I was not a natural mother and my husband was not a natural husband. He liked being married but he did not like the idea of marriage — he liked his freedom — and it was a very traumatic few years for me. To cope, I worked constantly throughout my marriage.” And work she did! At 28 years old she, her husband and children moved to Cairns, and Raia quickly made a name for herself. “It started with people asking me if I had ever modelled, and, in a short period of time, I was being asked to do shows,” she says. Cairns had a huge expat base and the women loved fashion — it was back in the days of Lisa Ho and Carla Zampatti. Raia modelled and was then asked to stage shows. Next thing Raia knew was that she was opening her own agency under her friend’s banner, Margot Mott, who ran Vivien’s Models at the time, and Margot taught Raia much of what she knows today. They parted ways and Raia continued on. It was the 80s and everyone wanted to do commercials in Cairns, and Raia supplied the models and actors for it. They shot the diving, the pristineness of the city, Coca Cola commercials, Sizzler commercials and Japanese commercials. “Along with a girlfriend of mine and her husband, who started a film company, we actually created the industry in Cairns, there was no industry there prior,” Raia says. “I trained all the models, ran my own schools, choreographed, did all the styling, the workshops, the hair, the makeup, the grooming… I taught self-esteem, exercise, and got other teachers in — I had a really, really great base to work from.” Her models were dancers and actors, very different to the models today, and they were an eclectic bunch with Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Filipinos and African American girls, and the occasional blonde — as Raia found that unique mix just worked so well. She also ran grooming courses for staff when the large developments, like the Hilton Hotel and Reef Casino, came to town, and even represented some very well-known international models. She worked with Carla Zampatti frequently and had models that went on to become movie stars. While Raia’s career was booming, and she was wanted all around the state for modelling classes, shows and management, unfortunately, she experienced a very tragic incident on Easter weekend of 1990.

March 2018

“My son was to be on a bus on Easter Monday and he missed the bus. He asked me to drive him, and his father didn’t want me to drive him,” she says. “I remember leaving home, I had Renee — my 13-year-old daughter — in the car, her girlfriend and my son. After that I have no recollection at all. It was a head on car crash.” “The two boys in the other car passed away at the scene. My daughter died instantly in the car, and my son was injured. I wasn’t alive when they pulled me out of the car, so they took me to Georgetown Hospital and revived me. They flew my son and I to Cairns hospital. “Renee… she didn’t make it… she was 13. And even after 28 years…” Renee falters, the pain still very real. Raia was in hospital for six months. She couldn’t walk as she “broke everything from the neck down." Her son’s injuries were extensive, and Renee’s girlfriend was injured, however, her injuries were only minor. Raia is eternally grateful for that. Although this experience would have been such a horrendous thing for Raia to go through, her husband found it all too much and decided to leave at that point. Raia had her busy modelling agency and she fought tooth and nail to keep it going

Live your life according to how you want to live your life. Do not be pushed into doing something that is not right for you. while making sure her son was okay. Her girlfriend took over the agency until Raia was better but what followed were staph infections upon staph infections, so she eventually closed it down as her heart wasn’t in it anymore. Over the next few years Raia tried to keep her busy modelling agency going, and when she couldn’t due to frequent staph infections, she moved to Sydney. She then opened another agency due to constant calls from her clients, but the staph infections returned, and she decided to get a retail job instead.

She continued to do a little bit of modelling herself, and met her now partner of 20 years, Paul. They eventually made their way to the Gold Coast, started renovating apartments, and Raia continued modelling. “I felt I was too old to model, I have a lot of scars all over me from the accident,” she says. “I sent some headshots to a few agencies, and Tamblyn Models contacted me, which was owned by Pam Tamblyn. I’m still modelling on the odd occasion.” Raia admits she is surprised she is still modelling and doing runway because “there is a shelf life for runway models,” although she is thankful she can still do what she loves. “I have had knee surgery in the last four years, so I only do work that really appeals to me. I limit myself a little bit. I still enjoy it. It is a shame there will be a time when I will not, because it has been such a big part of me.” While her scars are a reminder of the accident, and it was hard to deal with at first, Raia now likes to make light of them when people bring them up. “They are always there, they are always part of me. The thing that was the most difficult was that a lot of people I knew in Cairns crossed the street away from me when they saw me after the accident. And that had a more profound effect than anything else,” Raia says. “The scars are interesting… I don’t notice my arm and people do not see my leg unless I’m stripping in a dressing room. I tell all sorts of stories, like a crocodile attack, shark attack, knife attack, a truck hit me… that’s how I dealt with it.” As far as moving on emotionally following the accident, Raia says there are certain things that she cannot and will not talk about. “When people ask what it’s like I say, ‘Do not even go there and do not even think March 2018

14

about it.’ It is not something you want to go there with so just live your life, enjoy your life, but do not even think about it,” she says. Following the accident there were coroner’s inquests for three years, and police investigations, and a lot of these things Raia’s 17-year-old son had to be part of. He doesn’t remember the accident but afterwards he had a long journey ahead of him, as they all did. “He disappeared for many years, and I had no idea where he was, however, he is in a good position now,” Raia says. “He will not talk about the accident, and I respect that, but we still talk about Renee and what she was like.” Everyone handles things differently and, for Raia, moving on in life has meant detaching herself from a lot of things and people. “I don’t become attached to stuff, I have my son in my life and I have my partner in my life,” she says. “I’m a firm believer that when you get up in the morning you live your life that day, so to have something you are attached to is a waste of energy at this stage of my life. I’m quite happy without any attachments.” Raia says another thing she has had to deal with is the guilt — even though she was cleared of any wrongdoing. “I do not know what happened that day, my surgeon said that is the body’s way of coping with trauma. There are moments in time when I sit there and think, was I responsible?” she says. “Guilt is a funny thing, you can take it two ways, you can let it eat you to pieces or you can accept that that is what has happened and deal with it and work with it.” Professional support systems and help services were not in place back then but Raia was fortunate enough to have 12 women she met with every Thursday for five years to meditate with and talk to. “I met women who had been through far more horrific stuff than I had ever experienced in my life, husbands who had murdered their children, and I just thought, if they are here and they have gotten through that, then who am I to feel sorry for myself?” she says. “Some of them had gone off the rails, turned to drugs and all that, which I understand completely. It is like anything you do, you’ve always got a choice, and it is up to you whether you go ‘that’ way or ‘this’ way. We’re all still standing.” To end, we asked Raia what she would say to her daughter if she could pass on a message today, and here’s what she said. “I really do not know what I would say to her, she was my little girl,” Raia says. “She is always in the back of my mind, she is always part of me, and I do wonder what she would have been like. I know they say you get closure, but the older I get, it doesn’t get any easier.” “She would be 41 years old on March 6, and I do hope wherever she is, she is having a great party.” And watching her Mum shooting the images for this issue of Get it, we’re sure she is very proud and even a bit mad that she’s not in them with Raia, posing and laughing away!

I’m quite happy without any attachments. QUICK QUESTIONS WITH OUR COVER MODEL BACKGROUND: Ukrainian/Russian; first generation Australian. Born in Newcastle. My clients include cancer and brain injury survivors, widows left behind too soon, women going through divorce, post-surgery rehabilitation, pre- and postmenopausal women and those wanting to gain strength or lose weight. They are aged from 45 to 70+, mothers and grandmothers. WHY I STARTED IT… I was working in a large commercial gym, surrounded by young, female personal trainers, and saw time and time again that older women were intimidated by these young, body beautiful trainers and other young women at the gym. These older women spoke to me and explained they would prefer to train in a more relaxed, private setting. It was always a dream to have my own facility geared towards this and, with the support of my husband and family, this became a reality. WHAT IS INVOLVED… As a personal trainer I talk very intimately with clients about their relationship with food and exercise; their emotions and what they would like to get out of training. I carefully design programs for private one-on-one sessions; group sessions, buddy sessions (e.g. mum and daughter) and core strength classes. HOW MY TYPICAL DAY GOES… I typically work four days a week. Morning starts at 5am, on the gym floor at 5:30am,

I aim to shine a light for women in despair and those who have lost their way.

with a cup of my favourite herbal tea. Last client around 8am then breakfast and coffee. Clients again 10am-12pm. From 12-4pm lunch, meditation, social media, emails, phone calls, program design, writing articles, and, my own training session. 4pm-6pm clients. Dinner at 7:30pm with my husband and time to unwind. Bed at 9:30pm. BEST THING ABOUT MY CLIENTS… I love their stories and courage in getting back to doing something for themselves. I find it so inspiring witnessing changes within — whether it is weight loss, strength, mental, or emotional. Being a mum and a grandmother myself we all have a lot in common. MOST REWARDING PART… Results! The ability to help someone accomplish a goal or do something they thought never possible. The build-up of confidence is amazing and makes me so proud to share that moment with my clients. THE WORST PART… Unfortunately, you can’t help everyone! It hasn’t happened too many times, but sometimes a client gives little effort and does not follow their nutrition program. They will tell you all the right things, but deep down you know they are not being truthful and only deceiving themselves. SOMETHING SURPRISING ABOUT ME… I am strong! My personal bests are: leg press 320kg, deadlift 110kg and barbell squat 100kg. Also, I have recently lost 30kg but I still struggle with my weight like the majority of menopausal women, plus, I have a condition called Pyroluria. Watching every single piece of food, every single day is so exasperating.

Plan B: We run an Airbnb property and I would focus on that. March 2018

GET IT I FEATURE

BOOTY CALLS gone

wrong!

Life isn’t always as straight forward as it seems and sometimes what seems like a harmless, no-strings-attached evening can take a totally different turn that one, or both, parties were not expecting

Pleasure doing business RACHAEL AND NATHAN he first time I met him was at a charity dinner. As the Director of Marketing for an international retail chain, these events had become very much routine for me; same faces, same polite conversations — yawn! So, when he approached me between main course and dessert with a glass of champagne in hand and a cheeky smile, I welcomed the handsome distraction. I hadn’t seen him before; he was tall, blonde and dressed to the nines. He introduced himself, talked about his new business and asked about what I did. He was charming, clever and clearly younger than me, all of which suited me just fine. And his slight English accent just sealed the deal. We swapped business cards and he returned to his table, not before promising to be in touch. I watched him walk away, rolling my eyes and laughing quietly to myself that I’d probably never hear from him again. I was wrong. The following morning I woke up to a text message saying March 2018

how nice it had been to meet me. I replied, and it went from there. I told him about the holiday I had planned to Bali the next month; he talked about his love of red wine and cheese platters. All the while, I couldn’t get his cheeky smile out of my head. Two weeks later, Friday night rolled around and by 9pm, I found myself pouring a glass of Merlot and thinking of him. I picked up my phone, snapped a photo of the bottle and sent it to him, with an invitation to join me. His reply was instant: I’ll be there in 20 minutes. I fixed my hair, reapplied my lipstick and spritzed on some perfume. True to his word, he was on my doorstep 20 minutes later. I invited him in, poured him a glass and we sat beside each other on the lounge. We went through the awkward pleasantries, ‘How was your day?’ ‘This wine is lovely’ and then we both knew it was time to get down to business. As it turned out, he had a very, very different idea of what business meant. He pulled out his iPad, brought up a presentation slide and started talking to me about the structure of a potential partnership between his new business and my company. The investment portfolio and potential marketing strategies. He was pitching me… at 10pm…. on a Friday night… on my couch. Was he kidding?! Annoyed, sexually frustrated and with a slightly bruised ego, I suggested that this was not an appropriate setting for this conversation and that he would be best placed to speak to my assistant and arrange a meeting. I showed him to the door, ignoring his pleas to stay, and finished the bottle of Merlot on my own. Moral of the story: Never mix business with pleasure 18

Tinder-crossed lovers

A night with my stalker

BRITTANY AND KAI

KRYSTAL AND NIKO

t began like any modern Shakespearean romance: he swiped right, I swiped right, and we matched. Tinder-crossed lovers. His profile was simple and intriguingly vague; just one photo and a witty bio that caught my attention for a fleeting moment. His opening line was just as obtuse: “I give it a week…” A week until what? Until you get me in bed? Until I’m so sick of you I unmatch you? Until I swoon at your feet? Well, I like a challenge, so I replied: “I give it 24 hours…” And it was on. The conversation was electric. He was intelligent, witty and the undercurrent of sexual chemistry was pulling us both under. Despite this, there was substance and character to our banter. But he revealed that he had recently split with his wife of 12 years, and was not ready for anything serious. I had recently ended things with another suitor and the prospect of some harmless fun was too tempting to pass up. So when Friday night came around, we organised to meet for espresso martinis. As it happened, the chemistry was not reserved just for our online chat. It spilled over into real life and the sparks flew immediately. We talked for hours, like there was no one else in the bar, and finished far too many espresso martinis. There was no discussion needed on how to end the night: we were in an Uber and back to my place within 15 minutes. He spent the night and that was it. I called my girlfriends the next morning and giggled as I regaled them with my one-night stand story. Until, a week later, it became a two-night stand. Then a third. Then a regular booty call. We set clear rules: no feelings, just great sex. But rules were made to be broken, and the feelings developed. We should have walked away then, but the sex was too good and the chemistry between us kept pulling us back in. But it wouldn’t be a Shakespearean tragedy if it ended in a happily ever after. He wasn’t ready and I knew I deserved more. And so after a tense conversation, we ended it. I got all the anguish of a relationship ending, without ever having had the relationship in the first place. It stung to lose something I’d never had. I still miss him and find myself rereading our messages after a few glasses of wine on a lonely weekday night.

t was a Friday night and, after a long week at work, a girlfriend and I decided to head to Brisbane for the night, get a hotel room and see what the city had to offer. We were both single and very much ready to mingle! But we were clear on the rules: we both meet a man or neither of us do! She had been speaking to a guy who worked in the city and was keen to meet with him, so the focus was on me to find my prince charming. We moved from bar to bar, downing an array of martinis, and chatting to some particularly unappealing male suitors. Frustrated, bored and slightly intoxicated, we were ready to give up. Then along came a guy who I vaguely recognised but who definitely recognised me. He was E.X.C.I.T.E.D. to see me — that should have been the first red flag. I remembered he had added me on Facebook a year or so ago, we had gone on an awkward date and I ended up hoping to never cross paths with him again. He had tried for a second date but I never replied to his messages. He pulled my girlfriend and I over to the bar and bought us two drinks each, clearly trying to cloud our judgement. It worked. He proceeded to tell me how I was even more beautiful than he remembered and how he follows me on social media. He knew I’d be out (darn that martini I had posted when I checked in to the bar just around the corner an hour before). He was obsessed and clearly my number one fan (or stalker!). But the drinks were flowing and my judgement was foggy. He was charming enough and available, so he would do. We left and my friend’s date met us at the hotel. We went off to our respective rooms and that’s when I realised I had made a terrible mistake. This guy knew way too much about me (reality check to me as I didn’t realise how much I posted to social media) and he was in love. We kissed a little but he was drunk, smelly and becoming arrogant. I told him no and he didn’t listen. He proceeded to explain how in love with me he had been ever since our date, how he’s been waiting for this moment all his life. I was horrified. He tried to force himself on me, stripped of his clothes and I firmly kept mine on. I asked him to leave over and over again. He was annoyed and drunk, so he headed out to the couch and fell fast asleep. Not what I had in mind, but at least he was out of my bed. My friend heard snoring coming from the couch and realised my night was not going as well as hers, so she came in to check on me and I confirmed her suspicions. We agreed he needed to go — immediately! We woke him up, forced him to get dressed and he was not happy. We basically shoved him out the door, shoes in hand, and, as he left, he tried to slap my girlfriend. Yep, he turned into that guy. I blocked him off all social media; afraid he would see where I was at some stage and turn up with a ring to propose engagement.

Moral of the story: Don’t fall for your booty call.

And it was on. The conversation was electric. He was intelligent, witty and the undercurrent of sexual chemistry was pulling us both under.

Moral of the story: Don’t booty call a stage-5 clinger, no matter how desperate you are.

Fifty shades of grey rd

According to the experts, 60 is the new 40. And 40 is the new 30. And 30 is the new 20. So, I guess that makes 20 the new Terrible Twos? These days, age is a just a number, so, with that in mind, this month I’m taking my beauty cues from the best in the business: grandma. Have I lost my mind — or my marbles, as Grandma would say? Hear me out… Recently, I jumped out the shower and was greeted with an unexpected sight in the bathroom mirror. My blonde hair was a light shade of violet. Somewhere between my Grammy-worthy performance of Beyonce’s All the Single Ladies and my heartfelt rendition of Adele’s Someone Like You, I’d left my purple shampoo in too long. I was shocked, but I wasn’t even mad. Actually, it was kind of cool. It was very Katy-Perry-meets-your-Grandma’sblue-rinse-from-the-50s. In fact, the blue rinse has made a triumph comeback in recent years, thanks to celebrities like Kylie Jenner and Kelly Osborne, and I am on board with flaunting this nursing-home chic look. Dame Edna, eat your heart out! Speaking of hair colour, the age-old battle of blonde vs brunette has a new contender who is making major waves in the hair game: grey. That’s right, we are now intentionally dying our hair grey. Going grey is no longer a hair nightmare, but something we book an appointment for. Think men are the only ones who can pull off silver fox? Think again. Another hair trend making waves in 2018 is the ‘curly shag’ — think Flashdance but more chic and refined. And with the revival of this retro ‘do comes the rebirth of a trend we all thought was buried in the 80s alongside leg warmers and shoulder pads: the perm. But wait, before you recoil with images of Sarah Jessica Parker’s 1986-mane dancing around your head, things have changed. Thankfully, the ‘higher the hair, closer to heaven’ mantra no longer applies and we’ve put down the hairspray and stepped away from the comb. The modern-day perm is a relaxed, natural-looking curl, that gives a beachy, tousled look, rather than a just-stuckyour-finger-in-the-power-socket look. So Grandma, call the girls and grab the rollers. In fact, while you’re at it, bring the leg warmers and shoulder pads. You’ve got a lot to teach me…

Hayley x March 2018

Good brow day, every day Get it’s Hayley Bogaard tags along as our publisher Leanne gets her face tattooed!

’m sure if we asked you which feature of the face makes it stand out, you would logically answer the eyes, mouth or maybe the nose. But science actually argues that it is the brows that hold the highest face value. In a study conducted by the University of Lethbridge, researchers found that eyebrows were the most prominent and utilised feature in facial recognition. Basically, now our obsession with our arches is justified by factual evidence. So, what does this mean for those of us not blessed with bushy, full arches? Well girls, as the saying goes, fake it ‘til you make it. And this month, our very own Leanne did just that. But never one to do something by halves, she went the full nine yards and had her brows cosmetically tattooed. Yes, that’s right. Tattooed. Permanently. On her face. After years of failed attempts at drawing them on, struggling to get them even, and battling to get the arch just right between beautifully sculpted and permanently surprised, it was time to admit defeat.

Although she was a little apprehensive at first — “Face tattoos are for bikies and criminals?!” — she soon dealt with the fear and we booked her in to see Katherine McCann who is a nationally accredited Cosmetic Tattooist and Co Director of Gold Coast Paramedical in Ashmore Plaza. When we arrived, the pair sat down and completed a detailed consultation where Katherine explained everything from how the procedure would work, what to expect, any contraindications as well as after-care routines and the importance of the followup appointment. While the topical numbing agent worked it’s magic, Katherine and Leanne discussed the finer details including shape, style and colour, as well as lifestyle factors and other important considerations that could impact final healed results or longevity of the cosmetic tattoo. When asked what look she desired, Leanne replied,“Umm, whatever looks good?” and opted to be guided by Kat’s experience and advice before settling on a ‘powder brow’. Using a pencil, Kat then created Lea’s new brow shape design, taking into consideration skin type and tone as well as the natural contours and facial muscles, and Lea was able to make changes until all parties were happy. Then the tattooing began! So was it painful? “Not at all, it’s like a dull annoyance more than anything. I could have done it without the numbing agent!” Leanne courageously admits. The results speak for themselves. They look incredibly natural and the shape is perfect. As with any normal tattoo, they will peel and fade slightly in colour for a more natural look, and Leanne will return to see Kat in 4-6 weeks for a follow up appointment. This appointment enables them to see how the brows have healed, how the colour has settled and allows any necessary adjustments to be made such as adding additional colour, contour or extra hairstrokes into the brows. This appointment is where you literally walk out with ‘perfected’ brows. Leanne’s final verdict? “Oh my gosh, I love them. I have brows!” 22

Thin, flat hair? No worries! Hayley Kidson, Founder of Minogue Hairdressing (minoguehairdressing.com.au), is here to help ade famous by ‘80s supermodels, the runways of Victoria Secret and the Insta-famous, voluptuous, luscious locks are a constant source of hair-envy. Sadly, not everyone is blessed with genetically thick hair, instigating a never-ending quest for Jenneresque locks. While thin hair can be genetic, it can also be caused by stress and damage to the hair such as over-processing. Once you have determined why your hair is thin, and a professional can help you with this, then you can work out the best plan of attack for getting the thick, bouncy hair of your dreams. Follow these tips to make your fine mane fat. ONE WORD: VOLUMISING Arm yourself with a few key products to transform your hair from limp to lifted in no time. Autum has arrived! Hello fashionistas! It's the start of a brand-new season — autumn! Not that we get too much of a weather change in Queensland, but the stores are being crammed full of new and exciting goodies for us to drool over and place in our overcrowded wardrobes — just for the hell of it! When we reach an age with a zero at the end... I say it’s time for an update and to look at our body shape, and all our wobbly bits! Yes, age is a funny thing, we know what used to head north, now goes south… and east and west! One minute we are young and carefree, the next it's all about “How can I cover the bits I'm not loving?” Let's look at a few problem areas. Wobbly arms: I'm all for the cold shoulder look; a singlet with a hole to create an illusion and give you a cooler look and youthful feel. Look for fabrics that are soft and drape the body, nothing too tight! Tummy issues: Look for draping and fabrics that aren't too tight and bring focus to this problem area. Wrap arounds are great, and empire line cuts which come in just under your bustline. Layers are all your friend, as are vertical lines and uneven hems to draw the eyeline from this area. Sagging neckline: Now girls, we don't want to draw attention to this. I say cover, but in a pretty feminine way with soft chiffons and pastels, collared shirts, higher necks and stunning accessories. Legs you don’t love: I have to say, most of my lovely ladies hate their legs! Look for a flattering length, knee length is my choice, and remember to focus on your best feature, where the eye will come to first. I always say, nobody walks along looking at your legs! Give them something else to look at. And remember, age is but a number; embrace and love the 'you' you have grown into! Stay stylish,

Susie

st a o C e h t to a ic r e m A l a r From Cent ring Heart hen, Founder of Wande ns Gold Coaster Renee Co h the challenges and wi ug ro th ks tal ) .au m co rt. (wanderinghea al business of launching a small ethic

wapping a swag and the central Australian desert for a volunteer stint south of Mexico, in 2015 Renee Cohen set off to work with a women’s development organisation after five years working in remote Aboriginal communities. The next three months saw Renee connect with many talented artisans through her work as a photographer, as she embarked on her own personal textile journey to learn about traditional production techniques. The quality and craft of the handmade products inspired her to start her business, Wandering Heart. “By the time I ended up in Mexico volunteering, I had already travelled extensively through Central and South America and had a deep passion and respect for the traditional textiles from this part of the world,” Renee says. “In a time of fast fashion and mass production, there is something particularly special about knowing that you have purchased a product that is meticulously made by hand using time-honoured traditions that have been passed down from generation to generation.” During her time in Mexico, Renee learned about the Fashion Revolution and the ‘Who made my clothes’ campaign, which raises awareness about the origins of the clothing that we buy. March 2018

“With the fashion industry having such negative impacts not only on people but also on the environment, I absolutely loved this concept, and it was one of the motivating factors for starting Wandering Heart,” Renee says. “I wanted to be part of the global movement that is raising awareness about the impacts that our purchasing decisions have, not only on people, but also on the environment.” While living and working in Mexico Renee realised that the issue for many small-scale artisans was not product quality or design, it was that they struggled to have access to consistent markets as they rely on the tourism industry and visitors to their communities — and this fluctuates a lot. With a vision of supporting traditional artisans, Renee developed a business where she partnered with local artisans. She visits her artisan partners in their own homes and gets to know them and the techniques that they use. “It’s important for me and the customer to understand the time, effort and skill involved in creating each of Wandering Hearts’ beautifully curated products,” Renee says. Because transparency in the supply chain is fundamental to Renee, she has travelled extensively throughout Mexico to meet directly with the artisans and, at times, this has meant travelling to very remote areas which have a reputation for drug trafficking and high crime. “What most people think of when I mention Mexico are the risks involved in travelling to this country. They ask me if it is safe to travel there, particularly as a solo female traveller,” Renee says. “While there are inherent risks involved in 30

travelling to any country, and there are parts of Mexico that are best avoided, when I think of Mexico I think of the warmth and generosity of its people — their willingness to invite me into their homes and share their knowledge and passion with me — the bold and vibrant colours and the diversity of culture which is very much alive and celebrated. Mexico is a diverse country with a lot to offer.” Following her passion and transitioning from community development practitioner to small business entrepreneur has not been the easiest transition, Renee admits, and she found aligning herself with likeminded people to be hugely beneficial. “One of the greatest challenges for any small business start-up is that when you begin, you don’t really know where to start. In the beginning there is more that you don’t know than what you do know, and it’s a constant process of trial and error,” Renee says. “I was lucky enough to become part of women’s mastermind and networking groups, and these groups have been very supportive and helpful in my business growth.” Wandering Heart is now into its second year and 2018 will see Renee collaborating with other like-minded ethical brands to bring gorgeous new product offerings to the customer. “Growing as a business is exciting because it means we can continue to work with and support these talented individuals and families,” Renee says.

A/Prof Marcelo Nascimento is back on the Coast Associate Professor Marcelo Nascimento is the first Gold Coast based Certified Gynaecological Oncologist specialised in surgical treatment and management of complex benign, pre-cancerous and cancer conditions of the female genital tract /Prof Nascimento spent the year of 2017 in Sydney where he was invited to lead the treatment of ovarian cancer and other gynaecological cancers. “It was a real honour and I had a great year working at the Peritonectomy Unit at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and Chris O`Brien Lifehouse,” he says.“This is a premier Institution specialised in the treatment of women with advanced complex gynaecological malignancies, especially ovarian cancer and cancer of the peritoneum (internal lining of the abdomen).” He is now back on the Gold Coast where he has developed a nationally and internationally respected Unit, which is specialised in the treatment of women with complex gynaecological conditions. He is also keen to enjoy the lifestyle living on the Coast affords.

“I am now ready to develop the same work on the Gold Coast, and hopefully we will soon be able to offer even more specialised treatment options for women of our community who are diagnosed with gynaecological cancer,” he says. “As a family, we missed the Gold Coast too much. As a family, we missed the This place has the best of what life has Gold Coast too much. Get To Know A/Prof Nascimento What training have you completed? I graduated in Porto Alegre, South of Brazil, and gained Master in Sciences (MSc), Specialist in Obstetrics & Gynaecology, and Specialist in General Surgical Oncology. I then became Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (FRANZCOG) in Australia, and, after a further three-year training program, became Subspecialist in Gynaecological Oncology also through the RANZCOG. I have been a consultant Gynaecological Oncologist for the last 10 years working on the Gold Coast, always looking after patients with complex gynaecological conditions. What does all of that involve? My areas of expertise include: • The use of minimally invasive surgery (laparoscopy or key-hole surgery) to diagnose and treat women with suspicious or gynaecologic cancers • The use of innovative surgical techniques and technology to improve outcomes for women with cancers originating from the ovaries, uterus, cervix, vagina, and vulva • Newer treatment modalities such as fertility-preserving surgery and sentinel lymph node biopsy, which minimises toxicity from treatment and offers at least the same oncologic outcomes compared to a more radical approach • Research and surgery for advanced

gynaecological cancers disseminated to the peritoneal surface (internal lining of the belly) where complete excision is of paramount importance to achieve better outcomes • Management of pre-cancer conditions, cancer screening in the general population, and familial/hereditary cancer screening and counseling What is the hardest part about your job? It is actually the limitations that disease impose on how much help we can offer to our patients. It is more difficult to decide when ‘not to treat’, rather than proceed with active therapy. What do you enjoy most about your job? New treatment modalities are always coming up in oncology and this gives us the opportunity to collaborate and design clinical trials that ultimately will benefit our patients. The possibility to explore new treatment strategies combining research with clinical assistance is really exciting. What attracted you to working on the Gold Coast? I am always up for a challenge. I decided to move to the Gold Coast to develop a Gynaecologic Oncology Unit, which is currently one of the official training Units in the country, with national and international reputation. After my time in Sydney, I am now convinced that we can go for the next step, which will be the development of a 31

special surgical Unit to treat patients with advanced gynaecological cancer, as most of these women will otherwise have very limited treatment options. February was the moth of awareness in ovarian cancer. What is something people don’t know about ovarian cancer? Generally speaking, the majority of our community is not aware that we do not have a reliable screening test for ovarian cancer, with most patients presenting to the specialist with advanced stage disease. In retrospect, most patients with ovarian cancer do have persistent nonspecific abdominal symptoms including abdominal discomfort, distension, and a change of bowel and bladder habits. If those symptoms are persistent for more than 3 or 4 weeks, a visit to the local doctor is the way to proceed. Why did you choose this field of work? I choose gynaecological oncology because it is complex and very dynamic. It involves surgery, which I love, research, and the constant search for better therapies. We are able to achieve excellent results in the majority of cases. But we are also always looking for ways to improve outcomes, which makes this specialty very exciting. How do you unwind at the end of a day? As a good Brazilian, I love football, and always find some time to keep the ball rolling on the grass. March 2018

GET IT I DATING

Dating like a

grown up

Because we all need a reality check sometimes

Dating in 2018 is complicated, immature and often childish. It’s full of games, selfishness and sentences that start with “I want”.

ating in 2018 is complicated, immature and often childish. It’s full of games, selfishness and sentences that start with “I want”. Much of the time we expect a man to fit an exact template and, unless he’s tall, rich, handsome and a great communicator, we brush him off. Your wants and desires have taken over and it’s time to bring that ego down to earth. Ladies, we’re not toddlers and we need to stop acting like it. Here’s 10 no-nonsense tips to get back to dating like an adult so you can score yourself another fully-functioning adult (not man-child).

Don’t bond over baggage We know, it’s tempting to bond over a mutual hatred of the ex, someone who cheated on us, or problematic parents, or kids, but frequently bonding over negative things will find you both down in the dumps, pessimistic, drinking lots of alcohol and definitely not in the mood for the perks that come with a real grown-up relationship. Kick “fate” to the curb We all have a girlfriend who believes “if it happens, it happens,”“the right man will come into my life one day.” And so on. She sits in her castle waiting for prince charming to rescue her from her singledom. Newsflash: you’re not a princess and no one is coming to save you. You have to get out there; attend social gatherings, talk to a cute stranger, try online dating. Save your damn self, sista. March 2018

Chuck out your “list” We all have a list of desirable traits, assets and looks we want in a partner but the older we get, the more we realise this man doesn’t exit, however, plenty of other great ones do. Give a guy a change even if he isn’t 6’2” or just because his marriage failed, doesn’t mean there couldn’t be something great between you two. Hold onto important values and be more lenient on other aspects. Know and love what you have to offer Although it may seem you are a total catch in every single way, chances are you aren’t. Sorry to break it to you. But that doesn’t mean you aren’t an amazing person. Know yourself and what you have to offer, including the 'bad' parts of yourself. If you own it, embrace it and love it, chances are someone else will too. And if they don’t, get rid of them — there’s always more fish in the sea! Don’t have sex until you’re ready There is no need to rush into a sexual relationship if you don’t want to. You have a choice. You’re not teenagers where if 32

MAN SPEAK

you don’t put out, he’ll sleep with another girl in your grade. You’re adults and if he can’t wait until you’re ready, then he can get the heck out of your life. Do it when you know him well enough and when it feels right. No nudes, ever!

with Ash Palmero

When it comes to sending nudes (naked images) to a potential suitor, the rule is simple: don’t. While it may feel like a fun, sexy idea in the heat of the moment, it could spell disaster down the track, not to mention a whole lot of regret! There are so many cyber safety reasons you shouldn’t send them, on top of the fact that it’s not a very grown up thing to take a snap of your bits and send it to his phone. Feels a bit silly and teenagerish, doesn’t it?

Quit playing games We have all played games, and all had people play games on us, doesn’t feel nice does it? You spend hours waiting for a reply to a text, or for him to return your call, and since that annoyed you, you do the same back to him. Quit it. Reply when you can, call when you can and don’t keep tabs on how long he takes to get back to you, especially if he’s at work. Of course, don’t be too eager and call him constantly and text constantly if he’s not replying. Find a good balance.

Young men with older women and young women with older men… why are these two viewed in very Father, husband and all round top different bloke Ash Palmero weighs in... lights?

Offer to pay your own way sometimes Ladies, most men appreciate you offering to pay even if they don’t accept the offer. It shows you earn your own money and can take care of yourself. Don’t think a man always has to pay for you. We are independent, successful ladies so we need to act like it.

adies, as you get older, you seem to get better — well that's how it appears from this side of the fence. As I see it, perhaps you may not agree, but society basically understands that men have always had a thing for older women. From the age of 18 (legal age, right?) we have a fascination as men with older women (until we reach the age of 50 — after that, the older women idea seems to lessen, and lessen quickly). You see, with younger men, I’ll let you in on the secret. The younger man will see being with an older woman as a learning experience, a way to be shown affection, care and nurturing. The younger man is just a student, one who is being taught how to treat a woman. It's almost as if you ladies are in fact looking out for the next woman that man goes to by teaching him what is expected in the art of, well, you know, the knee-knocking dance and maybe how to hold a conversation of sorts. Whereas us men... well, as we get older we become ‘Dirty Old Men’ and the target of hatred in our later years. When you see an older man with a younger woman, what do you think? She’s only with him for his money? She’s old enough to be his daughter? Or how much is he paying her? Must be the sugar daddy! I'm sure ladies you also have this idea of the attractive ‘Older Man'. Say George Clooney for example, Richard Gere perhaps, but let me ask you this… is that simply because they are famous and wealthy? For Mr Average, it won’t pan out the same way, as he isn’t famous or wealthy, so he will fall into the view of being the 'Dirty Old Man'. These standards are built into our DNA. There is no use trying to understand it, it is more that we should all accept that it happens and it's part of life. So, for the men, it is up to you to be prepared for ridicule and looks of disgust if you head down the path of being with a younger lady. Ladies, it's a lot better for you, be ready for exactly what you want, for you are the teacher and you are in charge, on this I'm sure we can all agree.

Get off the damn phone Nothing says “I’m immature with a short attention span” like constantly checking your phone on a date or while spending time with someone once you start dating. Leave the phone in your bag or out of the room and engage in conversation and good communication. You want to be heard and have someone take an interest in you, so treat him the same. Put in the work You work hard to build your career, buy a house, have a great social life and more, yet you expect a relationship to magically happen? Puh-lease! Relationships take work, compromise, time and energy — just like that successful career. Treat it as something you can nurture, learn from and grown with and it will become exactly that. 33

In just a few clicks on the App or website, you can book a house, unit or room for a very affordable price, all the while helping to add extra cash to the pockets of people just like you. Some listings on Airbnb are managed by larger hotel companies and the like, but a lot of the time it’s just regular people. According to Airbnb, the average income for Australian hosts is around $5000 a year. However, more specific estimates have been calculated. That Gold Coast spare room you keep photo albums, boxes and junk in could make you an estimated extra $9088 a year on Airbnb. That’s worth the hassle of tidying up! And properties with four bedrooms or more can earn on average $72,792 here on the Gold Coast. Not bad at all. Like anything, it takes a little work to manage and it’s important you are very responsive to people enquiring — host responsiveness has shown to be the single most important determinant of successful Airbnbs. Then amenities considered ‘musthaves’ differ from city to city but here on the GC the only must-haves are a kitchen and washer/ dryer. Pretty simple, right? March 2018

Airbnb is such a recognised platform now that Gold Coast Tourism has partnered with it in the lead-up to the Commonwealth Games, marketing the service alongside traditional hotels and apartments. The Games will see Gold Coast Airbnb owners the real gold medal winners with central Gold Coast properties earning the same in one night during the Games as what can be made in a week with a traditional permanent tenancy. Not too shabby at all! Has this information got you thinking of Airbnb-ing your property? Don’t let any recent media reports scare you. While some bad experiences in the media are unavoidable for property owners who open their doors to short-term tenants, a little knowhow will see your experience be smooth and financially savvy. MadeComfy is here to provide their top five tips for a hassle-free host experience. But first, remember, it’s really important as property owners to read the fine print and understand the responsibilities before listing a property on a short-term rental site such as Airbnb. Screen your guests properly: Understand the purpose of the visit, and makeup of the group. Don’t approve any large groups unsuited to your home, check out previous guest reviews, and ensure photo ID for verification. Make sure your guests show courtesy and respect to the property’s permanent neighbours at all times. Make sure your STR (short-term rental) insurance is in place: Understand what makes 34

a valid claim (broken windows; holes in the walls; large stains on carpet or furniture e.g. red wine; large scratches on new floor) and what doesn’t (broken appliances due to normal wear and tear; lost cutlery or crockery — anything of value should be locked away; minor scuff marks etc.). Make sure your listing is accurate and appropriate: Property photography, description, and pricing needs to be accurate and appropriate. While guests expect you to highlight the best points of your property, don’t tell porkies. Nothing guarantees complaints (and bad reviews) faster than over-priced accommodation which looks nothing like the listing. Understand the supply and demand of Airbnb listings in your area for the time you are renting out to set the right price that maximises your returns and occupancy. Pay attention to detail: It’s the little things that guests are most likely to remember and recommend about your property. Coffee machine? Make sure the pods are well-stocked. TV and air-conditioning? Make sure the remotecontrol batteries work. Unwanted creepy crawlies? Undertake regular, professional pest control. Great guest experience means great reviews for your Airbnb listing, and that brings more future bookings and enables you to charge premium. Make sure you are prepared: Running an Airbnb property takes time and commitment, make sure you can give it both. With that in mind, it may be time to clear out your spare room!

here are 15,000 people giving one of the greatest gifts anyone can ever give this April 4-15 — their time. We chat to GOLDOC Volunteer Engagement Manager, Mat Rogers, on how the Games Shapers are helping to make the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games memorable and remarkable for all involved. Tell us about the volunteers for GC2018. The 15,000 Games Shapers come from a diverse range of backgrounds but the one thing they have in common is a great attitude and they want to help deliver a great Games. We received applications from residents in 117 countries with 99% of applications coming from Commonwealth nations and territories. Some have experienced volunteering in past Games, some volunteer amongst their local community, and others are volunteering for the first time. The youngest volunteers to have accepted a role are 16 and the oldest two gents are 91. How important are they to the running of the Games? More than one million volunteer hours are required to deliver the Games. Without doubt, volunteers are the heart and soul of the Games. It is their vibrant attitude and commitment to helping out that will make GC2018 great for athletes and spectators. Where will the volunteers be used in the Games? We have over 200 exciting and varied roles that volunteers will fulfil for the Games. Volunteer roles include technology team members, scoreboard operators, fleet drivers, village operations team members, arrival and departure team members, protocol and press team members, field of play team members, medical team members, medal ceremony team members and workforce team members. March 2018

How many people applied for volunteer positions? There were 47,000 applications. GC2018 interviewed 21,000 and I don’t use a 15,000 have accepted roles.

It also shows there is a great deal of excitement about the Games across Queensland and the nation. What are the volunteers themselves getting out of the Games? TAFE Queensland will deliver more than 360,000 hours of training to the 15,000 volunteers ahead of the Games. Volunteers will be equipped with role-specific and venue-specific training and through this we hope they develop a range of new skills and develop contacts that can lead to new opportunities after the Games. For some people, volunteering at GC2018 will be their first taste of volunteering and we hope the experience encourages them to volunteer in other areas after the Games. Which events require the most volunteers? The Carrara Precinct (Carrara Stadium/Warm Up Track/Carrara Sports and Leisure) will have the most volunteers due to the size of the location and the event/competition schedule. Carrara will host the Opening and Closing Ceremonies along with all athletic events plus weightlifting, wrestling, badminton and para-powerlifting. 36

A blessing in disguise? A blessing in disguise?

ivorce is, let’s face it, a nightmare while you are going through it — and for a period of time after. For many, the older you are when you divorce, the worse it may seem. Women in particular, who are Baby Boomers or even of Generation X, were quite likely raised to believe that the greatest goal of their life would be to marry and create a family. Even if a career has been paramount in a woman’s life, a successful marriage is likely to have beenconsidered consideredon onpar par of been oror, of ultimately, ultimately more more importance. importance. So when a marriage breaks down, there is a sense of failure. The longer you are married, or the older are when said marriage collapses, seems to make the shock and feeling of failure even greater. Add to that the fear that one is too old to start again, and divorce in later life can be a very scary experience. It can, however, be a blessing in disguise, whether you are a man or a woman. How? Divorce in later life can be incredibly liberating. Consider that you were possibly very young when you married. People all change and evolve over time.We grow, we develop, and

we discover new things in the world and in ourselves. Experiences shape us. Many times, we don’t evolve alongside or in parallel with our partner; instead, many couples find themselves growing apart until one day you find that neither of you are the same people you were when you married. The choice remains to then determine whether you can build your relationship anew together on a fresh foundation, or whether it’s better to go your separate ways. Often, the preferred option in the long term is the latter. Though there will be heartbreak, guilt, fear, anxiety and ambivalence for the future, there can also be a sense of excitement. For the first time in many years, your life is an open book of opportunities. If your children are grown and independent, there is nothing holding you back. Whether divorce was your choice or not, it provides a clean slate to create your future. You will discover independence and the ability to answer only to yourself, an opportunity to find happiness, and eventually the excitement and satisfaction of new love. You can rediscover who you really are as an individual, challenge yourself in new ways, live for yourself, and know that at heart you are a survivor. 37

Mourning a marriage is natural. So is fear of the future. But divorce in later life need not be a tragedy. It can, if you let it, be an opportunity to rewrite the rest of your life on your own terms so that the best is yet to come — and that is truly a blessing. If you are separating, please talk to us about the process you need to take to get the best possible outcome for everyone involved. You can contact C&K Family Lawyers on 5530 8022. GET IT I CAREER

How to reinvent and

supercharge your career With career expert Michelle Gibbings, founder of Change Meridian (michellegibbings.com)

he world is changing. How we work is changing. To stay in the game, not even ahead of the game, it's important to get comfortable with career change and reinvention. To become the leader of your career, here are five tips to get you started. Get planning Actively plan your career by setting aside time to reflect on the goals you want to achieve, progress you’ve made and identify key next steps. This includes elevating your awareness of what is happening around you, in terms of how your role, profession, industry and sector is changing. Most of the workforce will be impacted by automation and artificial intelligence, and you want to be ready for this. Also look at developments in other industries that may impact. This helps to widen your view about what’s possible for your next career steps. Get valued Be clear on the value you offer organisations. Everyone brings certain skills and ways of operating to the work they do. It’s essential to be able to clearly articulate that value and how you can help an organisation, business or client achieve their objectives. And then to consistently deliver value with the work you do. Get connected Build a profile where you are known for something and are respected, and have a network of people willing to back you and advocate for you. That means you need to spend time thinking more about what you can do for others rather than what they can do for you. The more you proactively help others, the more they will want to help you. Consider: l How can I help a colleague or connection build their network? Is there someone in my network that I can connect them with? l Have I got new knowledge or an

March 2018

insight that I could easily share with someone who would find it helpful? l Can I help a colleague or friend with their career? Get learning Don’t wait for the organisation you work for to develop you. Successful people know that learning is crucial to future career success and are constantly seeking out new ideas and ways to stretch themselves. This includes taking the time to understand themselves and to develop their emotional intelligence, which in many areas is more important than technical skills. Consider: l Buying a book on a topic that you have always wanted to know about, and is different to your day job. l If you sit in an office all day, attend a course that requires you to use your hands to create something (i.e. woodwork, craft or design). l Going to a lecture on a subject that will broaden your field of view. l Subscribing to online news so that you can get up to date information and knowledge from around the world. l Getting a coach who can help you uncover your career goals and motivations. l Investing in learning more about yourself,

your emotional intelligence and emotional triggers. l Being eager to take on feedback from people, including sponsors, mentors, colleagues and peers as it’s important to understand how people see us and how that differs from how we see ourselves. Get active How you feel both mentally and physically impacts your focus, productivity, decision making capacity and how you connect and engage with your work colleagues. As well, today’s work environment is stressful and it’s important to be able to regulate behaviour and manage stress. Consider: l Are you getting enough sleep? l Are you eating well and exercising? l Are you finding time to reflect? l Are you setting aside time each day for ‘me’? l Are you finding ways to recharge and maintain your energy levels? You career is an important part of your life, but it is only a part of it.This means it’s important to plan and manage your career in the context of your ‘whole of life’ goals. It was the legendary actress, Mae West, who said, “You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough”.

Trying to prevent the visible signs of aging is a billion-dollar industry, but, it is the invisible or less obvious signs that are more critical to the situation. How do I reduce my chances of getting old prematurely? Trying to prevent the visible signs of aging is a billion-dollar industry, but, it is the invisible or less obvious signs that are more critical to the situation. One of the things that is directly correlated in an increase in these top five causes is something called Metabolic Syndrome. Metabolic syndrome is characterised by having three of these five things: 1. High waist circumference: 102cm + for men and 88cm + for women. 2. High triglycerides: Usually the case from eating too much sugar and high GI carbs (fasted over 8.3mmol/L). 3. Low HDL cholesterol: Under 2.2mmol/L for men and 2.7 for women (high LDL is not implicated in Metabolic Syndrome). 4. High blood pressure: 130/85 is enough to tick this box! 5. High fasting blood glucose: Over 6.1mmol/L. One of the easiest ways to avoid all of these symptoms is to get your body in good shape. Most of the time, when your waist measurement falls to below 90cm for men and 80cm for women, what you did to get there will drop your triglycerides, increase your HDL, drop your blood pressure and stabilise your blood glucose levels.

How to live FOREVER...or as close as possible Vision Personal Trainer Jeff Osborne is here to tell you how asked a favourite client of mine about his long-term goals and he replied that it is,“To die as young as possible as late as possible.” That really resonated with me. We all want to live longer but none of us want to be crippled or dependent in the last years or decades. So, if you want to look at adding 'good' years to your life there are a few things to consider. What things are most likely to kill me or make my life worse? When you look through the statistics, 62% of the causes of mortality are directly related to your lifestyle! The top five are: 1. Heart diseases: Including heart attack, stroke, heart failure and hypertensive disease. 2. Dementia and Alzheimer’s: That's right, it’s now #2 and increased 239% between 2011 and 2013! 3. Diabetes: Type I and II have increased every year. 4. Cancers: Pancreatic, breast, prostate, lung etc. 5. Other heath related diseases: Depression, lower respiratory diseases, liver disease etc. These five make up over 62% of all causes of mortality and, while I don't have a cure for them (yet), there are certainly ways to drastically reduce your chances and prolong healthy life!

How can I stay as young as possible for as long as possible? My four tips for staying young are: 1. Lead a fit and healthy life: Make exercise a fun and regular activity. You don't need to work super hard or very long to see results. In fact, as little as 10 mins can make a difference! 2. HONEY MUSTARD GLAZED PORK CHOPS SERVES 4 | PREP TIME: 10 MINUTES | COOKING TIME: 15 MINUTES + MARINATING TIME INGREDIENTS • ⅓ cup honey • ⅓ cup whole grain mustard • ⅓ cup white wine • 2 cloves garlic, crushed • 4 pork loin chops (about 250g each) • 1 tablespoon olive oil • ⅓ cup cream DIRECTIONS Combine the honey, mustard, wine and garlic in a bowl. Add the pork chops, ensuring they are coated all over, and marinate for 10 minutes. Heat the oil in a large chef pan over medium-high heat. Remove the chops from the bowl, reserving the marinade, and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side or until golden and just cooked through. Remove from the pan and rest under foil. Place the reserved marinade in a small saucepan and bring to the boil. Cook for 2-3 minutes until reduced by half. Stir in the cream and simmer for about 2 minutes or until thickened to a saucy consistency. Drizzle the chops with the honey mustard sauce and serve.

MUSHROOM SOUP SERVES 4 | PREP TIME: 10 MINUTES | COOKING TIME: 15 MINUTES INGREDIENTS • 25g unsalted butter • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 2 cloves garlic, crushed • 1kg button mushrooms, stalks removed, finely sliced • ¼ cup plain flour

• 1 litre chicken stock (or vegetable stock for vegetarian option) • ¼ teaspoon finely ground white pepper • ½ teaspoon salt • ¼ cup thickened cream

DIRECTIONS In a large, heavy-based pot, heat the butter and oil over a medium heat. Add the garlic and gently sauté until translucent, soft and fragrant. Add the mushrooms and stir through. Increase the heat and sauté until the mushrooms are soft and brown. This will take about 10 minutes — the mushrooms firstly will take up all the moisture from the oil, then they will exude their own juices, and eventually those will evaporate, and the mushrooms will start to brown. This is the point that you want to reach before proceeding. Add the flour and stir well. Add the stock, about ½ cup at a time, stirring continuously. When all the stock is added, bring to the simmer and cook for 2-3 minutes. Remove from the heat, season with pepper and salt, and finish with the cream.

POTATO AND POACHED SALMON SALAD SERVES 8 AS AN ACCOMPANIMENT | PREP TIME: 10 MINUTES | COOKING TIME: ABOUT 15 MINUTES INGREDIENTS • 12 small or 8 medium chat potatoes (about 600g), unpeeled • 2 eggs • 2 skinless salmon fillets (about 180g each) • ⅔ cup sour cream • ⅔ cup good-quality mayonnaise • 2 tablespoons whole grain mustard • Juice and zest from ½ lemon • 2 tablespoons dill, chopped • ¼ cup shallots (spring onions), finely sliced • 2 large dill pickles (gherkins), finely chopped • 2 tablespoons baby capers, rinsed • 1 lemon, cut into 8 wedges DIRECTIONS In a large pot of salted water, boil the potatoes until tender, then drain. (Time will depend on size.) While the potatoes are boiling, cook the eggs for 4 minutes in the same water. Remove and allow to cool before peeling and chopping roughly. Reduce the temperature of the water to a gentle simmer and poach the salmon fillets for 8-10 minutes. Remove and allow to cool before gently flaking the fish apart. In a large bowl, combine the sour cream, mayonnaise, mustard, lemon juice and zest. Fold through the dill, shallots, dill pickles, capers and boiled egg. Cut the cooled potatoes into quarters if small, sixths if medium sized, and stir into the dressing. Stir through the flaked salmon and serve with lemon wedges. Note: If not serving immediately, keep the salad in the fridge. It will seize up a bit and needs to be brought back to room temperature before serving. March 2018

GET IT I SOCIAL MEDIA MEDIA

ke it Romance scams

We all want love, and with the explosion of online dating sites and social media, it’s easier than ever to meet people online, however, it’s also easier than ever to fall victim to a romance scam s a nation we are seeking love, but sometimes love isn’t what we find. In the past year, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) had nearly 4000 people report romance scams, with losses totalling more than $20 million. How do you know if you’re being scammed? Typically, it goes like this. The very good-looking gentleman has a great online profile that is everything you are looking for. He is very interested in you from the get go, quick to start an online dating relationship, and quick to profess his love. Majority of the time he is overseas and tells you he wants to travel to Australia, so he can progress his relationship with you, however, his funds are usually “tied up” or unavailable, so he asks you to send him money. BIG RED FLAG. We need to keep our wits about us, even when we’re falling in love, and be smart. If someone sounds far too good to be true, he usually is, particularly if he looks like a male model and is significantly younger. Also, no man should be asking you for money to visit Australia, or for any other assistance he needs. Red flags, ladies! Red flags! Who is being targeted? Sadly, it’s those of us who are really seeking to find an incredible partner; those who are lonely, isolated or less confident in themselves are huge targets because the victims very quickly make them feel loved, wanted and beautiful. And will spend hours upon hours talking to them every day.The victims tend to be female and in the 45-to-65 age group. However, it’s not just those people who are targeted, anyone of us can be tricked with a scam or fraud. There are many highly educated people who have fallen victim too, so no one is safe. Who are the offenders? Much of the time offenders are western businessmen travelling to an African nation, or someone in the armed forces, such as a US soldier. Or it 45

could be a real person whose identity the offender has stolen. Because the offenders are offshore, it’s hard for authorities to know a lot about them, but they do know that people who target victims in Australia, and in the US and the UK, are typically located in West African nations or have cells throughout the world. What can you do about it? Stay aware when dating online — always. Also keep track of older people you know, like parents, friends or neighbours, if you know they are single, and especially if you know they are online dating. Here are some more tips below from the ACCC. Never provide financial details or send funds to someone you've met online: Money orders, wire transfers or international funds transfer are what scammers typically use as it is much harder to recover money this way. Be very wary if you are moved away from a dating site: Private emails or phone are preferred by scammers to correspond as they can avoid detection. Do an image search of the person using Google: Or reverse Google search the pictures on their profile, and any they send to you, to check if they are who they say they are. Be alert to inconsistencies: Warning signs can be inconsistencies in their stories, spelling and grammar mistakes, and problems such as cameras not working when you want to Skype each other. Be extremely wary of requests for money: No prospective partner should be asking you for money — big red flag! Never share intimate pictures or videos with someone you have never met: Scammers are known to blackmail victims using compromising material. Seek assistance: If you think you've been scammed visit scamwatch.gov.au or contact your bank. March 2018

H PISCES February 19 – March 20 The 2nd sees a Full Moon in your relationship sector. While this is meant to put focus on your significant other, it will actually be about you. Communication is the key under this lunation that can help promote togetherness and communication. Opening your heart and your soul is often easy for you, so be sure it’s reciprocated. H ARIES March 20 – April 19 After a period of finding your sense of meaning and purpose, your patron planet shifts into focussed Capricorn on the 18th. Bold action can be taken toward a long-term career goal or you may have the confidence to strike out in a new direction. Alongside studious Capricorn, your best bet is to apply a strategic approach rather than head-butting your way forward. H TAURUS April 20 – May 21 Friends, colleagues and your networks, both online and real life, will play a key role this month. As curious Mercury and your ruler Venus remain close, your role is to ask questions and show interest in those around you. A key piece of information or a conversation may provide you with a dramatic turn of events or a surprise, especially around the 29th.

H GEMINI May 21 – June 21 Teamwork and collaboration will be super important this month as Mercury and sweet Venus remain close in the sky. You can expect some extra support from the 20th as this duo enter the luckiest area of your horoscope. Connections with friends and colleagues will bring sweet success and a surprising turn of events can be expected as the month ends. H CANCER June 21 – July 22 Creativity, inspiration and friendship are highlighted under the Full Moon on the 2nd. You may throw structure, organisation or routine out the window and favour the call of your soul. Heartfelt conversations or deep connections with friends or lovers will bring out your nurturing nature.‘Who’ matters more than ‘what’ now. The nitty details of daily life can wait. H LEO July 22 – August 23 Dreams, imagination and your intuition will be heightened on the 4th as the Sun makes his annual meet-up with inspired Neptune. A solution to a financial issue is possible with the help from a friend or ally. A conversation, a new piece of information or showing curiosity or interest in a situation may bring you an exciting new opportunity. H VIRGO August 23 - September 22 The spotlight is firmly in your relationship sector this month with a plethora of planets in Pisces. Even the Full Moon on the 2nd in your own sign still pulls the attention away from you. Navigating the tricky terrain between love, family and your need to feed your mind through learning, study or getting out and about will require negotiation. H LIBRA September 22 – October 23 Venus will enter Aries on the 6th placing attention on your significant other. The

togetherness you desire can deepen through honest, even confronting, conversations. Serious Saturn may place some obstacles in your path, but will also call into question the tricky balance between what both parties truly want. Expect a surprising plot twist in love on the 29th. H SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 Confident Mars remains in your money zone until the 18th, where you enjoy a once-in-every two-year boost to the coffers. From then, your focus will be on learning, writing or short travels for the remainder of March. What you learn or discover now may eventuate to changes in your living situation down the track. H SAGITTARIUS November 22 – December 22 Your confidence and optimism turn toward your income and cash flow from the 18th. Becoming acutely aware of your value and taking the necessary steps to ensure your long-term success is the game plan now. Choices made throughout March may play out over the next several months, so any short-term losses can be recovered then. H CAPRICORN December 22 – January 20 Energy planet Mars enters your sign from the 18th. Your confidence and vitality will receive a much-needed boost. Clarity and direction around what the longer-term Saturn in Capricorn story means for you may also be realised this month. Ensuring what you do daily aligns with your most important goals is a must for success now. H AQUARIUS January 21 – February 19 March may be one of your quietest months as planets pile up on the lower half of your solar horoscope. Action planet Mars dips into your 12th house from the 18th, so you may be the most productive in private. What you do behind the scenes may not be immediately recognised or rewarded, but your key for the next few months is to keep at it.

GET IT I LAST WORD

Hello

you

Sarah Blinco on facing your future self

recently picked up a copy of Daniel Pink’s excellent read, When, which explores the science of perfect timing. Among its numerous lessons, the book teaches how to get the most out of your morning coffee and breaks during the work day, and the importance of understanding your own chronotype (that is, when you are most energetic and lethargic each day). Interest piqued? One concept in particular made me think: his discussion about how, as a society, we tend to overemphasise the importance of endings. Studies show that when we face an ending of some sort (including people falling into an age that has a 9 on the end of it — me this year, eek!), the tendency is to display extreme behaviour like I want her to choosing to take unnecessary live without regret, risks or sabotaging our best anger and bitterness — relationships. The psychology of it indicates we are innately good lives are wasted grasping for a happy ending. on such things. I And not just happy, but purposeful. The book references do hope she drinks films like Pixar’s Up that perfectly less wine (possibly). capture the essence of this There should be dogs, human condition, making us cry while feeling sentimental at everywhere. And the same time, because we’ve music, plus connected with something special. adventure. Daniel explains that in knowing this about ourselves, we can take steps to make our endings more gratifying. A beautiful example on how to do this is sending a message to your future self. This might be a letter, vlog, blog or audio recording. Whatever format, put it away for five years. This proposition made me a little teary. What would I tell my future self? I think I would start by saying I hope she lets loved ones know they are valued — always (and that she’s continued to do better on that front, as I intend to do from now on). I want her to live without regret, anger and bitterness — good lives are wasted on such things. I do hope she drinks less wine (possibly). There should be dogs, everywhere. And music, plus adventure.

March 2018

I’d say that I hope she’s invested in creativity and travel; to remember that life has taught that things do get better; bring the light, be the light and look for it in others. That’s all served me well so far. I would include a quote seen online from tinybuddha.com, because it’s perfect:“Surround yourself with the dreamers and the doers, the believers and the thinkers, but most of all, surround yourself with those who see the greatness within you, even when you don’t see it yourself.” This is the abridged version, and I’m not sure what I’ll think of it in 2023, but hopefully I’ll be proud. Perhaps I’ll be moved by the experience and progress made; or by naivety, disappointments not yet known, and challenges overcome or being faced. When advocates that action like this serves to bridge the gap between past and present, and that is one of the best ways to find substance in our own lives. ‘Living in the moment’ is all the rage (and it’s no secret that I fly the mindfulness flag, it’s important). However, Daniel made me think about the feeling of satisfaction that’s possible when ‘me now’ feels close to ‘me’ past and future. This exercise removes the detachment we feel from the future self (whether we are talking five years down the line, or just a couple of weeks), and enables us to make better choices that help when that future arrives. ‘Time’ is complicated in terms of life, love and the dreams we envision, and many of us know a soul or two who have detrimentally gotten lost in it. I hope I can impart to you some timeless insight which I took from Daniel’s work; that is, by taking control of our time, and understanding how our past, present and future relate, we can vastly improve our experiences now. Think I’ll include that wisdom in my note to future me too. But for now, over to you… Get it girl Sarah Blinco is a business communications professional.
