Nadine Muller wears her General Purpose Uniform with Red Cross Brassard on Get it's cover. Read more about her and the incredible work she does on page 12.

From the publisher n this month’s issue, we are focusing on, and are grateful for, our unassuming heroes. Everyday heroes are all around us — if we choose to stop and take note. I was very lucky growing up as my hero was my beautiful mother. She gave everything of herself for her family, her friends, my friends and the myriad of foster children that came into our home to be cared for, put back together and shown another way to live. Without fear and without prejudice she selflessly took them in. She was their saviour, mentor and, ultimately, their way back from the depths of the despair they had grown to believe was normal.

“Is there room for me at your place?” by Graham Perkins

Have you ever sat and sipped your tea When the weather’s nice and mild And the thought just maybe crossed your mind What makes a foster child? And have you thought that maybe There’s something you could do To help a lonely little child That’s reaching out to you? Have you ever looked into their face Then tried to turn away? As their sad eyes say “Please help me For I have nowhere to stay?”

Even after her death, we received letters and cards from the now-grown children that she had managed to ‘save’ and they were proud of who they had become because of her and wanted to thank her. Heroes truly are all around us. I was at a service station one afternoon, with my small children in the car, and an elderly man was attempting to get out to fuel his car. He was using a walking frame and he fell over, onto his back like a turtle, unable to help himself stand up. I rushed to assist but was beaten by a young uni student who had seen what had happened, picked the man up, filled up his car, paid for the fuel by his own means and gave the man a receipt and a hug. It was a proud moment for my children as they saw first hand how gracious and caring strangers can be to those in need.

Can you still go on your way And lead your normal life While their small world is torn apart By trouble and by strife? Or should we just ignore them Pretend that they’re not there? Or should we take them to our hearts And show them that we care? For all of them had parents And God knows the reason why They just walked away and left them To stand alone and cry And as you lie in bed at night In your house so big and warm With your family safe around you As you listen to the storm Remember they’re all out there And they don’t even know Why the hell they haven’t got a home Or some place they can go

It’s second nature for most of us to automatically revert to carer mode when a loved one or friend is in need, but it takes a very special person to care for, support, counsel and love a stranger.

But I guess that we can’t spare the time Even though we’re Christian folk And we go to church each Sunday Now isn’t that a joke!

If I had a hat, I’d take it off in salute to these incredible people. Not because its their job, or they are expected to do it, but because somewhere deep down they have a special gene that makes them unique individuals — ones that all of us should be eternally grateful for. Whether we know them, have needed them, have heard of them or are one of them, we should all be thankful.

For to sing a song on Sunday Doesn’t help these little guys It doesn’t fill their mouths with food Or wipe their tear-stained eyes. There’ll always be unwanted kids As long as time goes by I know that we can’t solve it But we sure as hell can try

The Get it girls salute heroes of all kinds — even if they are so humble that they won’t label themselves as one, we know they truly are.

Graham Perkins isn’t afraid of life’s challenges and a walk through his world proves just that. Born in Glen Innes and after serving in the NSW Police Force he and his beloved wife relocated to the Gold Coast and became foster parents. Graham says that, “Working with unwanted kids taught me that every day is freedom, no matter how bad it may seem and life should be lived to the fullest.” Walk Thru My World will make you laugh and cry and inspire you to help others wherever you can and live every day to it’s fullest. GET TO THE POINT

The new quarter-life #crisis with Anna Davies

Gold Coast Winter Golf Pass

crolling through my Instagram feed it seems that everyone and their nan (literally), is either: a) sunning it up in Europe, b) popping a bottle of Moet on a yacht, or c) loitering around a waterfall. It seems as if the day of the humble duck-faced mirror selfie is gone, and in its place we have a myriad of theatrical glimpses into the lifestyles of the rich and famous. The only thing is, we aren’t all rich and famous. Some of us are on a budget. Some of us have office jobs. Some of us think it’s too cold to hang out next to waterfalls this time of year. Okay, so, by some of us, I mean me.

Warm your golfing heart this winter with the ultimate golf deal. For one great price, you will play the pick of the Gold Coast’s golf courses.

I can’t keep up with this new luxurious lifestyle everyone seems to be enjoying. I am honestly finding it hard enough to organise myself to bring my reusable bags to Coles, never mind booking four holidays a year, day-tripping to waterfalls and somehow acquiring a yacht to lounge on. As I carry a precarious stack of supplies, consisting of toilet paper, Tim Tams and kale (it’s all about balance), through the rain-drizzled streets of Melbourne, I can’t help but feel a sneaky quarter-life crisis brewing. ‘Am I really living life?’ I ponder, as I sit under the fluorescent lights of my office and take a deep breath of that sweet recycled air.

Book and play Links Hope Island, RACV Royal Pines Resort and Sanctuary Cove The Palms before 31st August 2018 and pay only

Probably not, I conclude.

‘Should I quit my job and make friends with someone that owns a yacht...a yacht person?’ It is tempting. But I think it is a no from me.

I am sure Yacht People are great and all, but when do Yacht People get the chance to buy their weekly supply of kale and Tim Tams? When do Yacht People binge watch shows on Netflix? When do Yacht People work?

To Make Your Bookings: Direct: call any participating Golf Shop, make your payment and select your tee time. You will be issued a voucher to present on check in at each course. pre pay for your voucher online and then call each course to select your tee time.

I suppose they don’t have to, living in the ocean and all. But for a mere land-dwelling mortal like myself, these things are kind of important. Lame and monotonous — but nonetheless important.

Terms and Conditions: Valid for new bookings only. Subject to availability. Some block out dates apply.

I could be wrong, but I don’t think I need to go on holiday four times a year or hang out around a body of water every weekend — I do however need money for food and rent.

The Parkway, Hope Island, QLD www.sanctuarycovegolf.com.au

Don’t get me wrong, holidays, yachts and waterfalls are nice ways to treat yourself. But for me, it’s not a lifestyle. I’d much rather save some money and explore local hangouts with people that I enjoy spending time with.

Ph: 07 5699 9000 Springfield Drive, Hope Island, QLD www.linkshopeisland.com.au

With my quarter-life crisis successfully avoided for another month, and the Yacht people of the world resting peacefully below deck (safe in the knowledge that I won’t be coming anywhere near them), I think it’s time to bring back the goodold duck-faced mirror selfie. After all, if it’s not broke, why fix it?

"We want to make a difference no matter

“I saw the strength and tenacity of the human body through pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum which allowed me to wholeheartedly appreciate just how remarkable the human body is.” Aside from her full-time career with our Armed Forces, Nadine is also an accredited Personal Trainer, Certified in Advanced Nutrition, F45 Group Fitness Instructor/Coach, Sponsored Athlete and Online Coaching and Mentor. She does wear a lot of hats, but she says her most rewarding job of all is being mum to her three-year-old son Madden and devoted wife to husband, Dane. “First and foremost, I’m a mum. Because of motherhood, I’m now more driven, organised, motivated, accepting, patient, focused, realistic and resilient,” she says. “As mothers we move mountains like it’s nothing, we raise families, we tutor little developing minds everyday, we feed, cook, clean, and keep the cogs turning in day-to-day life all while being individuals and maintaining our professions at the same time. “I’m super-proud of the mum I am now, the mum I’m continuing to become in the future and the strong-willed me I continue to be everyday — I apply that to every facet of my life, whether at work or at play.” One of Nadine’s toughest career moments to date was being away with the military for four and a half months this year while her child was still so young, but her husband held down the fort for them. “He did a remarkable job raising our child in my absence,” she says. “It was one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do; the emotional tug of being away from family was a tough thing to bear on a daily basis, but we got through it, we survived, and it was with our strong bond as a family unit as well as my ‘can’t knock me down’ attitude." Family is the thing that gets Nadine through work and life challenges and keeps her fuelled with drive to persist in any situation. “Any tough day, whether it be personally or professionally, my family are the true pinnacle of my strength, resilience and tenacity. Plus, there is nothing more motivating than aspiring to be the

how big or small " Nadine is proud to serve this great country of ours. She makes a true difference in people’s lives, often on one of the worst days of their lives. She works in testing, pressurised and stressful situations to ease pain, provide comfort and offer support. She is caring, patient, selfless, courageous and humble. She is a Nursing Officer. adine Muller has been serving Australia for eleven years. Formerly a non-commissioned officer achieving the rank of Corporal, Nadine completed her Nursing Science degree in 2017 and then commissioned to become a Nursing Officer (Air Force). “It goes without saying, I’m wholeheartedly proud to serve this great country of ours,” Nadine says. “Through my time served I have travelled to just about every continent on the globe and seen the highest of status societies to the lowest of low socio-economic and countries of ruin, destruction and despair. “I was one of the aircrew who went on an extensive overseas tasking which covered nine countries across the African continent with the then Governor General of Australia, the Hon Dame Quentin Bryce AD CVO, and wow what an experience that was.” Nadine’s time in the military has been filled with great moments and even greater people. “It’s the people you get to do it alongside, through the good, through the bad, through the triumphs, and through the challenges, it’s your work mates that truly make the difference,” she says. Mind numbing but also heart filling moments happen often too, and Nadine says these moments make hers, and other nurses, duty totally worth it. “We are here because we want to make a difference, no matter how big or small, and that is something that makes me super-proud to be a nurse, and ever so proud to be one that serves in our armed forces too,” she says. “The job is often complicated; it is intricate, the skill sets are wide and complex in nature but sometimes amongst all the clinical skills that emergency nurses use on a daily basis, some of the most important things will be to comfort, to reassure, to hold a hand, to stand by a family member and to be a supportive presence so people don't feel alone on what can often be the worst day of their life. “The role is demanding and unpredictable to say the least. Emergency nurses and military nurses can be and are exposed to very traumatic situations. I know my professional, mental and physical capabilities are tested and that’s why it’s important to have an outlet.” For Nadine, her outlet is keeping fit, healthy and having a holistic approach to overall wellness, and this has been even more important to her since becoming a mother. “Fitness is at the forefront of what I do professionally, and since becoming a mother, my true passion for health and fitness has reached new heights,” she says. 13

"Some of the most important things will be to comfort, to reassure, to hold a hand, to stand by a family member and to be a supportive presence..." best version of myself so I can be the best role model for my child too,” she says. While Nadine is without a doubt a hero herself, her family are the people she looks up to. Her father’s side were mainly army people and her mother was in policing, her grandma was a nurse in the military and her brother was in the Royal Australian Army and is now in the Australian Federal Police. She was raised knowing the importance of serving others and is so very fortunate that she could build her life, and family around that. “The military has afforded me so many wonderful opportunities, experiences and exposures that has truly been second to none. I’ve enjoyed my career and I’ve met some truly lifelong friends that I call family along the way.”

"When you

save someone's life...it's all

worth it "

Marissa is someone who walks into an unknown place full of chaos and finds order. She takes control of a completely unstable environment and maintains composure in highstress situations. She is compassionate, empathic, and most of all, patient. She is a paramedic.

August 2018

Marissa 29 Burleigh Advanced Care Paramedic II with the Queensland Ambulance Service

Marissa and her work partner Justin.

“At the time of the job, we all see the patient as something we treat systematically, and we revert back to our training, working through things step by step and doing what we have been trained to do,” she says. “The digestion of the job challenges me and in these moments of struggle I have learned that instead of distracting myself to turn to my colleagues to talk and de-brief.” While Marissa is undoubtedly a hero herself, she has someone she regards as her hero, fellow paramedic Peter. “He is the paramedic who rescued eight sailors in the Sydney to Hobart in 1998. Peter is a massive inspiration to me and I recall calling him for back-up to one of my jobs and having a little bit of stage fright handing over to him! He is a legend, an inspiration and an overall amazing human being,” she says. Although work takes up a lot of Marissa’s time, outside of work she loves to spend time with her partner and family, get outdoors, go camping and ride her horse. “I am also very into health and fitness and have lost about 30kg in the last three years. I am entering a Defence and Emergency Services body building competition later in the year,” she says. Marissa also intends to do some volunteer work in Nepal and Vanuatu in the next few years as well to utilise the skills she has acquired and give back to those less fortunate. 14

lthough Marissa grew up wanting to be a pilot (and was flying single engine aircrafts solo before she was driving a car by herself), she had a burning desire within her to help people. She has been working fulltime as a paramedic for four years and has been in the industry studying emergency medicine for six years. Upon graduating with a Bachelor of Paramedic Science, and in the top 15% of students in her field, Marissa served the rural community in Mount Isa, covering events like the infamous Mount Isa Rodeo. She then transferred to Brisbane and is now on the Gold Coast. She has been a Tutor and Lecturer at Griffith NAME: University and helps educate and shape future paramedics. AGE: In her time as a paramedic, Marissa says there have been so many memorable moments, but the one that stands out SUBURB: to her most occurred a few weeks ago. JOB: “My partner and I attended a case where a patient was in a witnessed cardiac arrest. The scene was an emotional one with family members surrounding my partner and I, as well as another crew, and we performed CPR for approximately 10 minutes until we got a pulse,” Marissa says. “A pulse on scene does not translate to that patient living, and for me, this has always been the case. We extricated the patient from the scene and continued to work on this patient all the way to hospital where they were put into a resuscitation bed. This is the last time we will see them. “This particular job was getting at me for days. I was struggling to sleep or concentrate as I kept replaying the events in my head. So, about a week or so later, my partner and I followed up on this patient. As it turns out, the patient had not only survived but they were in ICU with nil deficits. “This was the first time in my career that I had a patient have a positive outcome post cardiac arrest. Our supervisor took us to the ward to meet our incredible survivor and I had never felt so many powerful emotions. It was a combination of happiness, pride, reward, thankfulness and just overall elation —this person was a walking and talking miracle before me. “We got a photo together and it is framed in my house to remind me that although my job can be awful at times, some days, when you save someone like this, it is all worth it.” Being a paramedic is no easy gig and there are times when it is especially tough, like when the job becomes more “real” Marissa says. “When we go to a job with a less desirable outcome or when we need to break the news to family that their loved one has not survived, this is probably the hardest part for me,” she says. Marissa also says that often as a paramedic the time after the job where you process what has happened is more difficult than the job itself.

Once at the hospital, Bert and the team visit each of the “I’m just amazed at the other volunteers, the young girls and blokes there that have taken their time to be interested in someone else’s happiness. That’s what really inspires me,” he says. Bert and some of the other volunteers at Radio Lollipop ready for pyjama night With all the smiles and magic tricks, come some darker, heartbreaking moments and Bert says his 14 years as an ambulance driver and volunteer first aider for the St John’s Ambulance Service in New Zealand prepared him for those very moments. The hardest times, he says, were transporting young children who didn’t understand what was happening to them and were terrified and confused. But he credits those years to helping him be able to cope now with the realities and tragedy that often comes with children in hospital. “You can cope with it, but it does upset you when you meet children with cancer and conditions like that. It is hard,” Bert says. And it’s not just the children who take away a little bit of magic from Bert’s shows, he says he is blessed with the satisfaction of knowing that he is helping others and seeing the dedication of the team around him. “I’m only a small part of this team, the other volunteers are so dedicated and passionate. I’m just one of the old fogey’s!” An old fogey with a heart of gold and a few magic tricks up his sleeve! You can keep the magic alive and help a sick child smile by donating to Radio Lollipop and supporting the incredible work their volunteers do at radiolollipop.org or find them on Facebook at facebook.com/radiolollipop 15

GET IT I WORK LIFE PROFILE

WORK LIFE Inside the life of Hayley Kidson, Creative Director of Minogue Hairdressing

ife is never dull for Hayley Kidson. As a wife, mother of 6, 4 and 2 year old kiddies and fur mum to a 14 year old fur child, plus Creative Director of Minogue Hairdressing, it’s always go, go, go! ABOUT MY JOB… My job on a daily basis is very interesting! I’m not only a therapist, but a delivery/taxi driver, bookkeeper, professional speaker as well as a hairdresser! I love my job and I love the diversity of it. I get to do hair and make people look amazing, but I also love building up my team and encouraging them to be the best version of themselves! MY ALARM GOES OFF AT… 4:15am every day except Sundays but my body clock likes to wake me up anyway! I go to the gym which I just love, it keeps me focused and gives me so much energy for the day. I also love the silence I have… it’s the only time I’m able to switch off during the day and sing along to my music. I get home around 6:30am and then the craziness starts! I get the kids ready for school and kindy, breakfast, lunches, arguments about cleaning teeth etc. Once I’ve done that I can get myself ready and then we all run out the door! HOW MY DAY TYPICALLY GOES… My days are never typical. I pretty much only have two days a week that are the same for me and those are the days I’m doing clients. These are my favourite days as I love being in the salon. We always have a great laugh and so much fun! On the other days, I’m running around all day, on my phone, emails, paying bills, organising training and more.

Plan B: : Real estate. August 2018

HOW I GOT THE GIG… My career started as a school-based apprentice when I was 16! I still wanted to finish year 12, but I loved doing hair. From there a lot of doors and different opportunities opened for me. I entered as many hair competitions as I could, pushed myself to do different management courses and basically said ‘yes’ to everything, whether I thought I could or not! I had the opportunity to open my own salon in 2010 which was the scariest, yet best decision I’ve ever made! THE BEST PART… I get to make people look and feel great about themselves! There aren’t too many professions that can do that for someone, which makes me so proud to be a hairdresser. THE WORST PART… Probably the personal information that sometimes gets put on you when clients discuss their lives! SOMETHING SURPRISING… Deep down I’m a tomboy and love riding motorbikes. MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT… The first time I presented on stage and got a 16

I entered as many hair competitions as I could, pushed myself to do different management courses and basically said ‘yes’ to everything, whether I thought I could or not! standing ovation! I’ve also worked with a lot of hair royals in the hairdressing industry so to me that’s pretty special! AFTER WORK… I turn back in to mummode. This usually consists of unpacking school bags and the dishwasher! HOW I GET IT ALL DONE… I have an amazing husband who is a stay-at-home dad. He makes my life a lot easier which allows me to do all my traveling for work and everything else I do!

GET IT I FEATURE

I knew everything I wanted to sell and what it would be like. Rainbows, unicorns and pink, but most of all, EVERYTHING glitter.

From the

playground to the boardroom

Rather than waiting until they are finished school or university to chase their dreams, these two business owners are doing it at age 10 and 16 GLITTER IS THE WAY TO GO Sophia Rizzo, 10, is building herself a makeup empire called Glitter Girl Why glitter? Glitter makes me happy. There are just so many different colours and everyone knows it is made by unicorns, and I love unicorns! I love the sparkle and how I can mix a new colour, give it to my friend, and make her happy too. My mum always had a collection of sparkly dresses when I was little, and we used to dress up in them all the time. How did a 10-year-old come to owning her own business? I have always wanted to own my own business since I was very young. When we were in Hawaii on holiday I saw so many sparkly things that we didn’t have back here in Australia. We were swimming in the ocean later that day and mum asked me,“If you could open a business, what would it be and what would you call it?” I immediately said,“Glitter and Glitter Girl.” I knew everything I wanted to sell and what it would be like. Rainbows, unicorns and pink, but most of all, EVERYTHING glitter. What happened from there? When I was in grade 4, I started selling small pots of glitter at school. I would take samples and my notepad and write down the orders. Then the next day I would take in the stock and August 2018

my friends would pay me. Until the teachers found out because EVERYONE was wearing glitter — oops! No more selling glitter at school, so we took it online. Were your parents surprised with your idea at first? How did they help you? Yes, they thought it was just a cute idea until I bought out my unicorn notepad and showed them pages filled with my ideas! My dad built the website and my mum is a photographer, so she did the photos. Each day after school I would help pack the orders and my brother would put stickers on the stock. We all had to help to get it off the ground. Now we employ staff as well. What's it like having a mum that works for you? It’s super fun, but we have to work together. I am lucky to have a mum who loves sparkly things too. How has the business grown? When we launched the business in October 2017, we thought we would just get a few orders, but as soon as we put in on Instagram, it went crazy! We had to ask friends to come and help with orders and mix glitter. Then we started to get ambassadors wanting to use our products and tell their followers! What are your plans for the business? We have just expanded the showroom at our Burleigh Heads warehouse which is a big sparkly pretty place that stockists can come 18

to and see the glitter and our products. We are focusing on wholesaling our products to beauty and hair salons, boutiques, chemists and kid’s fashion stores around Australia. How do you balance it all? I do six hours of cheer a week, which I love, and I also love working at GG HQ. Mum always says I still need time to just chill out and be a kid so, weekends are for playdates and family beach time. Do you think more kids should own their own businesses? I think it’s great to have a business at a young age. I use my math that I learn in class and add up the sales and the profits for each product. We always talk about business around the dinner table and love watching shows like Shark Tank. I can’t wait to have all my friends working for me and drive a pink sparkly car and live in a pink sparkly castle with unicorns wandering around the yard! Are there any business women you look up to? I have always loved JoJo Siwa. I think she is super cool and she is also a young girl with a very cool business that makes people happy too. What has been the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given? Keep following your heart and your dreams! Keep chasing them wildly as everything is possible when you believe in yourself and know you are the creator of the future. That’s from Lisa Pollock.

I didn't have much money and started with $200 and zero investment. I had the dream and I hated school.

CREATING HIS FUTURE THROUGH PARKING Hear how Rylan Kindness, 16, founded Australia's #1 parking discount platform, Parking Deals Australia Have you always had a business mindset? From a young age I was mowing lawns and started my first business at 11 by buying wholesale scooter parts and selling them online. I started my first online business in year 9 called bargainbest.net which was a buying and selling platform like Gumtree until students at my school started posting teachers houses on there and it was shut down. All my business ventures were started to fund my freestyle BMX career. I thought if I could create something that could make me money while I was travelling and riding that would be the ultimate goal, plus I just enjoyed doing my own things. Tell us about your current business. I started Parking Deals Australia out of my parent's frustration in having to pay a lot of money for parking. My mum asked me to go find a deal one day, so I Googled ‘parking deals Brisbane’ and to find a deal that was actually valid and suited our needs, I had to go through 10 different websites. I saw the need for a platform like this and started it when I was 15. I thought it was ironic that I have never driven a car ‘legally’ but I was running a parking business. Fast

forward a year and Parking Deals Australia now has hundreds of deals and operates in Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide. We work with all the big parking companies and help tens of thousands of people to save on parking every month. I have an office at Australia's #1 business co-working space, Little Tokyo Two, and have some of Brisbane's most successful people on my advisory board. What’s it been like? Starting a business at 15 in year 11 is something abnormal as it competes with a lot of people’s opinions that you must go to school and get a good degree before doing something like this. I have learnt that is bullsh*t. I run my company in the back of math classes, in bed and on planes. You can start anything and need no degree, just hard work, passion and a ready for anything mentality. What are some challenges you have faced? I was really naive to anything business. I literally started with a 0.5c pen, piece of paper and an idea. I didn't have much money and started with $200 and zero investment. I had the dream and I hated school. Do you ever experience negativity by business persons when they realise your age? Sure, why should a big corporate company trust a 16-year-old who has zero degrees? From a corporate perspective, I can see how this may cloud their judgment, but it is up to me to prove to them that I should be treated just the same way as any other person. I do wear suits and dress 19

very respectful, so it adds to their trust and makes me look more legitimate. I always work professionally in the business to the standard that these companies would expect. Have your parents helped you in any way? My parents were the reason for the idea but otherwise, it has all been me. I have completely funded and operated by myself. My parents are really supportive in being my ride to meetings, cooking for me and making sure I wake up in the morning. They also taught me the importance of hard work and thinking outside the box. What’s the best part? I love being young and running a real business because I get to wear a suit and work with multinational corporations. People often double my age listen to me and allow me to have a say. I don't have many young friends as all my friends are business people around 20-30. I think on a different level so people find it funny when I tell them I'm 16. What are your plans for the business? We are expanding our team, expanding across the whole of Australia and creating parking products and experiences to make parking cheaper and easier than ever before. What is your advice for other young adults? Life is short, you go to school for 12 years, stuff around for next 10, then work for 40 years and then die. If you want to be doing something that creates a positive impact in the world, gives you the life you want and makes you feel good, start now and not tomorrow. If you are young like me, there is no better time to start a business because you don't have the liabilities of rent, debt and (hopefully not) children. Live the life you want and do what you want. If it was easy then everyone would be doing it, but if you really want it, you will make it happen. Tick, tick, tick — the time is now. August 2018

GET IT I BEAUTY

S.O.S.

SAVE OUR SKIN! Spring is just around the corner so make sure your skin is fresh and dewy with these skin-saving tips from Julia Simmonds, Pharmacist and Founder of skincare range, Itchy Baby Co. Get in quick. Apply your moisturiser immediately after your shower, and by immediately after I mean within the first two minutes of turning the tap off. This is when the skin can soak up the most hydration and also the layer of moisturiser on the skin will stop extra water loss at the skin’s surface.

“Glowing skin is always in…”

Stop using soap. Soap has harsh ingredients that dry the skin and strip it of its natural protective oils. Opt for more gentle products with moisturising and nourishing natural ingredients to work with your skin and keep it healthy. Lather it on. At night, use a thicker or heavier moisturiser, especially on your legs and hands. A heavier moisturiser stays on the skin for longer, preventing water loss and strengthening the skin’s natural barrier.

Pro tip: one way to know if your moisturiser will be thick is to check that the first ingredient listed isn’t water. Many creams and lotions will have water listed as their first ingredient. Water evaporates quickly from the skin, taking some of the body’s hydration with it.

YOU MAKE ME

BLUSH The perfect blush is a girl’s secret weapon to looking naturally radiant and fresh-faced, even after a long day. Follow these simple steps to ensure your blush game is more rosy-cheeked and less circus clown!

1

Blend, blend, blend! You don’t want a big stripe of colour across your face so be sure to blend the edges of the colour well. Use a soft bristled brush and if you need to, finish it off with a sponge or puff around the edges to smooth it out.

2 3

Brush IT OFF

Bright is not always best. Try to avoid overly bright hues on the cheeks and opt for shades that mimic your natural flush. The darker your skin tone, the deeper the shade. But don’t go too light — it will wash you out!

3

Save the shimmer! While shimmer powders can look radiant and give you a beautiful highlight, save them for the evenings. In the harsh daylight, it will make your skin appear dry and patchy. Instead, try a liquid blush for a little extra glow during the day!

HOW TO

affair-proof YOUR MARRIAGE

want to stray, it is possible to recreate the intensity and desire with your own spouse. Although it sounds like an oxymoron, you can have the spontaneity and excitement in your own relationship — if you plan for it. I know that passion diminishes over time in long-term monogamous relationships if you don’t focus on your erotic relationship. Normality, responsibility and routine are part of the companionship that forms when you are working on the safety in a relationship. The safety that happens when you want to feel attached, when you want to relax, to have children, to ‘be yourself’ with your partner. One would think that the safer you feel with your partner, the more erotic the relationship would become, the more you could share your fantasies, and shake up your sex life. Yet it almost works in the opposite way. The longer you are together, the more you cling to the safety of your companionship and the less you want to rock the boat of your marriage. In order to create a more passionate, erotic relationship, you have to work on the erotic part of your marriage as much, if not more, than the companionship. We know from the research done by Ashley Madison that seeking sexual satisfaction is one of the key reasons that people look for outside affairs. In fact, the Gold Coast has the second highest rate of sign ups to Ashley Madison in the state! But if you can create that satisfaction and increase passion in your own relationship — and you need to be willing to do that — you can create an ‘affair’ with your own partner. An erotic ‘affair like’ relationship at home makes it much less likely that either of you will stray outside your marriage or committed partnerships. Try imagining that you are more than just roommates. Create something in your marital sex life that feels dangerous, or naughty — because that’s what an affair provides, and that’s what will get back that feeling of forbidden eroticism and excitement. Try starting with some frank discussions about intimacy and what you both want. One of the easiest ways to bring back the spark is to try role-playing. This can take some practice, and will require effort, but it gives both of you the chance to get back to who you were when you first met. Stepping away from your current role of husband or wife and throwing caution to the wind, and maybe even acting out your fantasies, can be just as exciting (and maybe more) as having an affair. I know many couples who meet as ‘strangers’ in a bar and their married ‘affair’ becomes quite a torrid one! The end game? If you can be open with your partner about what you want, and how you’re going to get it, your sex life can be just as hot as affair sex, without any of the risk.

Tools to keep your partner from straying with Tammy Nelson, sexologist, sex therapist, professional counselor and relationship therapist aybe blame Hollywood — or Instagram — but the notion that unbridled passion abounds, even after years into a relationship, is one that many couples believe. And if that’s not what’s happening in your relationship, it’s easy to wonder why not. But the answer is not simple. As a consulting sex and relationship therapist with Ashley Madison, the world’s largest married dating site, I see both sides of the story. The fantasy that your partner of decades ravages you the moment you arrive home after you’ve both put in 10 hours at the office, when you still have to walk the dog and get the kids to bed is unfortunately, unrealistic. If you are expecting to be swept off your feet by your partner, it makes sense that you feel disappointed. The reality of married life today is that most times both partners work, both have a busy life, and lots of responsibilities. So ‘spontaneous’ sex is just not going to happen all that often. But that doesn’t mean you don’t want it. Many times excitement, spontaneity, and passion are linked to new relationships, and it’s not unreasonable to crave those feelings again. Those butterflies, and the unbridled passion — all of it is synonymous with a new relationship and also a fling, and for the many people, it fades over time. The fantasy of an affair is that you can experience those feelings again. That is one of the many reasons there are so many people using Ashley Madison. It’s a desire for impulsive excitement. And yet, for those who crave those feelings in their own marriage and who don’t August 2018

ultiple sclerosis (MS) affects one in 3,000 Australians. And one of those Australians is Potsville resident Shelley Gilbert, 43. Shelly worked at her family’s motel in Brunswick Heads NSW as a Motel Room Supervisor, however, in 2013 she began experiencing some concerning symptoms. “My field of vision was restricted, then my right side lost function and feeling, which stopped me being able to walk,” Shelly said. “This made me bed ridden in hospital.” Following on from that hospitalisation were four years of “hell,” Shelly remembers. “I lost my body sensations, driver’s license, mobility, independence and most of my spirit,” she says. Fortunately, after those incredibly tough years, Shelly found a great doctor. “He never stopped trying to help me. Without his medical professionalism, I would not be here as I am today,” she says. “With assistance and chemotherapy, I gained a good chunk of what I lost back.” Once Shelly was able to do most things again, she returned to work, however, she found the demands of the job were too much for her. “I could no longer work set hours in the very fast-paced motel cleaning industry, as much as the fantastic people I worked for tried to assist me,” she says. Rather than getting down about it, Shelly took things into her own hands and launched a business approximately two years ago. Shelly noticed how toxic and throwaway our society had become, herself included, and this inspired her to create beeswax wraps to replace plastic wrap through her business — Pottsville Perfectly Natural Beezwax Wraps. “Single-use soft plastics seemed to be the most used and least recyclable items of all our families refuse, so, with assistance, it became my mission to try and reduce this as much as possible,” she says. “The beeswax wraps are reusable and minimise the cost on the planet and, in return, us personally. They last a long time with good care, 6-12 months, which replaces a lot of single-use plastic.” She also sells stainless steel straws to replace singleuse straws and cotton produce bags to replace plastic bags. governments new plastic bag ban, now is a great time to support a local business and stock up on some eco-friendly options. While Shelly is a lot better these days, she still has a lot of trouble with her physical functions, though her business and purpose allows her to stay positive. “With the assistance of all my gorgeous, earth-loving customers, I feel very proud to assist Mother Nature in making our lives as healthy as possible,” she says.

How to get the best

personal

loan

With David Lennon, Founder of 'You’re Welcome Finance,’ also known as the ‘Personal Loan Guy’

he market is full of banks, credit unions, pay day lenders and others, all offering hundreds, if not thousands, of personal loan products. It’s no wonder people get confused and overwhelmed and end up with a product that does not quite fit. This also probably explains why the number of complaints received by the Financial Ombudsman Service in 2016/2017 was up by 11 percent on the previous year with teenagers as young as 18 being lent large sums of money. Most of the complaints were about personal loans provided by banks. I strongly believe personal loans are the best way to consolidate debt and borrow money for life experiences and purchases. Credit cards can be a trap. Many people can’t stop spending if there is available credit which means if you lack self-control, a credit card is the worst thing you can get. When looking around for a personal loan, there are five key things you should look at. This is where a good broker comes in. They will help you to find the best loan. Here are the five things: 1. A good interest rate: Make sure you are getting the best interest rate for your

personal loan. Rates range in the market and a small difference in rate can add up over time. 2. Set up fees and charges: Some lenders charge administration fees for loan setup. This needs to be factored into your consideration. 3. Early repayment penalties: Some lenders may penalise you financially for paying your loan off early. Paying your loan off ahead of time means lenders miss out on receiving the interest that they would have otherwise earned. 4. Late payment fees and interest: While it is important that you make your repayments on time all the time, sometimes, things go wrong, and you don’t want to be hit with heavy charges as a result. Also, setting up a direct debit to make your payment is the safest method of payment. 5. Find a good broker: Work with them to clarify your requirements so you secure the best personal loan product for your needs. Every time you apply for a loan, the lender will undertake a credit check, known as a hard inquiry, which can lower your credit score by a few points. A broker will be able to assist you 35

to secure the best product without the need for multiple applications. This is by far the best way to go about sourcing a loan product. While the Royal Commission has uncovered concerning behaviour in the finance sector, it has also helped to clarify that brokers disclose their payments and commissions to clients unlike bankemployed lending officers who are not required to disclose what type of bonuses or financial benefits they receive for writing business for their employer. I hope this level of transparency provided by brokers is restoring people’s confidence in the financial system. August 2018

GET IT I HEALTH

Get up close and personal with your

dental health

Hands up everyone who has a busy, well-worn daily routine? e all have one and we go through it on autopilot but things like our dental health can get missed. You might think it doesn't really matter if you don’t floss much, skimp on brushing your teeth, live on a diet of junk food or tell your dentist, "See ya in 2022!" But as Australia’s Oral Health Tracker (ada.org.au/ oralhealthtracker), launched by the ADA and Australian Health Policy Collaboration (AHPC), makes clear, it’s not good for our dental health, and, for our health in general. This Dental Health Week (ada.org.au/ Dental-Health-Week), an annual event held by the Australian Dental Association, Australians everywhere are being encouraged to ‘Watch Your Mouth’ and keep on top of their dental health. So, how do you do that? Brushing Only 50% of Australians brush twice a day. But, to do a really good job, you need to brush for at least two minutes twice a day, taking care to use a soft-bristled toothbrush to clean your teeth systematically along all surfaces, always brushing in a circular motion. Flossing Flossing once a day is important because it removes plaque from between your teeth

which goes a long way to helping prevent gum disease, tooth decay and halitosis (‘bad breath’). It's not something that should be rushed either so pick a point in the day when your routine isn't screaming "Run! Run!" If you're not sure about the right technique, have a chat to your dentist who can show you all the right flossing moves. Say "Hello!" to your dentist You should be seeing your dentist more often than you probably are. 65% of Australians have not seen a dentist in the last two years. Yup, that’s right — two whole years! But you should really be seeing your dentist on a regular basis

to keep on top of your dental health. Don’t have a regular dentist? The ADA’s Find a Dentist (ada. org au/findadentist) and Choosing a Dentist (ada.org. au/ChoosingaDentist) make it easy! Eat and drink well We all love junk food, but it’s not good for our mouth at all. You’re much better drinking lots of water, avoiding sugar (watch out for hidden sugars in drinks and foods), limiting snacks between meals and sticking to three meals a day, and concentrating on the good stuff like vegetables and dairy products.

Work shouldn’t be a pain in the back Learn ways to alleviate back pain with VARIDESK, a company that provides sit-stand desks and active office products to help people get more done and feel better doing it

PELVIC TILTS To perform a pelvic tilt, lie on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor. Tighten your stomach and press against the floor then begin rocking your hips back and forth. Hold for ten seconds while breathing in and out smoothly. Repeat eight to 12 times. BIRD DOG While on your hands and knees, tighten your stomach muscles and lift and extend one leg behind you, keeping hips level. Hold for five seconds and switch to the other leg. To make this exercise harder, extend one arm in front of you during each repetition. Repeat eight to 12 times for each leg. PIRIFORMIS STRETCH This movement will stretch, strengthen and loosen your pelvic muscles to ease discomfort. Lie on your back crossing one leg over the other. Gently pull the knee toward the chest until you feel a stretch. Hold for 30 seconds then relax and repeat three times per leg. LEG RAISES Lie on your stomach and raise one leg slightly off the floor. Repeat 20 times on each leg. Once you’ve completed all the exercises, you’re well on your way to maintaining a healthier back and a healthier body! If you’re on a roll and looking for other ways to ensure you stay active in your workspace, give VARIDESK a try. Visit au.varidesk.com/en-au to learn more.

ack pain is nothing new. It’s something everyone struggles with at some point. Estimates from the Australian Bureau of Statistics 2014–15 National Health Survey show about 3.7 million Australians (16% of the population) have back problems. If you’re currently experiencing back pain or looking for ways to alleviate it, there are plenty of exercises and stretches that can help. Our friends at Aligned Modern Health recently published an infographic outlining exercise that can help relieve back pain either in your workspace or at home. Ready to hit the ground running? Try these simple exercises: HAMSTRING STRETCHES The hamstrings run through the back and top part of the leg. If they’re too tight from sitting all day, they can pull your back, causing discomfort. To stretch these muscles, lie on your back with both legs straight. Bend one leg at the knee and extend the other straight up in the air. Next, loop a towel over the arch of the extended foot and gently pull on the towel while pushing against it with your foot. Hold for 30 seconds on each leg then relax. WALL SITS Wall sits are a challenging exercise that strengthen your leg muscles to ensure they can adequately support your back as well as the rest of your body. To perform the movement, stand about a foot away from a wall and lean back until your back is flat against the wall. Slowly slide down the wall until you are in a sitting position and hold for 10 seconds. Repeat this exercise eight to 12 times. BACK EXTENSIONS To perform a back extension, lie on your stomach with your hands under your shoulders and use both hands to push your upper body off the floor. Hold for 30 seconds and repeat one time. BRIDGING Bridging helps strengthen your legs and abs to help stabilise your back. Lie on your back with your feet flat on the floor and your knees flexed. Next, tighten your lower abdomen and glutes and slowly raise your hips off the floor until your shoulders, hips and knees are in a straight line. Hold for six seconds and lower. Repeat eight to 12 times. August 2018

Hero of health JEFF OSBORNE FROM VISION PERSONAL TRAINING BUNDALL TALKS ABOUT HOW OUR HEALTHY OR UNHEALTHY HABITS IMPACT OUR LITTLE ONES hen it comes to health, we generally grow up to adopt the habits and behaviours of our parents. There is something in humans that makes us regress to the middle ages when it comes to most habits. Hang out with people that drink and you will drink more, hang out with a group of smokers and the likelihood that you’ll become a smoker goes through the roof. It’s no wonder that children who grow up in a household with one overweight parent are much more likely to grow up overweight. In a 2017 study in the Journal of Clinical Research in Paediatric Endocrinology boys were 2.79 times and girls 3.46 times more likely to be overweight. It’s hard being healthy these days, we don’t need any more of a handicap. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not concerned if you are in shape or not, I am only concerned about people’s health. There have been some news stories this month about weighing kids at school, and I think that is a horrible idea. The health implications of being overweight are serious and they not only affect life longevity but also health longevity, emotional wellbeing and generations to come. For your own sake, and your children’s and their children’s, you MUST step up and be the hero of health! What does a hero of health look like? We all have many things going on in our lives. Work, relationships, stress, commitments and often your health, and that of your family's, takes a back seat. It is much easier to just eat poorly and neglect exercise in the short term. Until you make it a priority in your life, change will be hard to come by and, at best, short term. If you have been making poor food choices for you and your family, turning it around is much harder, but it is possible. For starters, you need to lead by example for a few months. Don’t expect to force change on kids straight away, they will resist! If they have a taste for crappy food, they will want it and try every weapon in their arsenal to get it.Tantrums, screaming, food strikes — everything! First step is to be the change, they will get curious and start to ask questions. Then you can educate them on why you are doing what you are doing and, eventually,

they will start to make better decisions. So, what leads to good outcomes? Let’s have a look at the habits. Food planning and preparation: Every weekend, take some time to plan out what you are going to eat for every meal of the week. Plan to get a good serve of protein in each meal, cut down on low-nutrient carbs and make dinner a colourful salad or veggies with a big serve of protein each night. My favourite thing to do is cook up the protein, put it on a plate in the middle of the table with a big salad and let everyone pick at what they want. Make exercise a daily habit: Even just taking a walk of an evening with the whole family rather than watching TV will have a big impact. Maybe it doesn’t burn a tonne of calories, but it sends the message that exercise matters. We all know that if you don’t have enough energy, doing some exercise is the best way to increase that! Every weekend do some things that force you to get active. The kids might complain at first, but they will eventually value the time together. Get interested in health: Go out of your way to watch and read things about health. There is so much great information available on health. I know some of it can be contradictory and confusing but if you keep learning and discussing, rather than taking everyone at their word, you will start to learn more. Load your social media with some interesting and informative people, watch some documentaries on health and, before you believe it all, look up online what people think of the information presented.Taking the time to learn more puts it in the forefront of your mind and will make you and your family a healthier — and happier — bunch! You will be so glad you did. Jump on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter and find us — Vision Personal Training Bundall! Alternative ways to carry your

groceries

Because Australians don’t want to pay for bags

It would be far more effective if you used adults to help you, maybe even hire some male models or topless waiters, we’re sure they can carry plenty and will look good while doing it! ustralians are in uproar. We are entitled to plastic bags, many think, but all of a sudden, the government takes them away from us. Australians have responded in true passionate Aussie style and here are some of the actions they have taken so far. Just take the trolley Some of us have thought of it, but one person has actually done it. Video footage has emerged of a frustrated shopper loading a shopping trolley full of groceries into his vehicle outside a Woolworths store.“No bag, no problem — we’ll take the trolley,” he says in the video, as he loads the whole trolley into his van. Get it girls have also witnessed people pushing whole trolley loads of groceries to (and into!) their house and have seen a number of people actually take trolleys into high-rise buildings, into the lift, and up into their apartment to unpack. It should be noted that stealing trolleys is illegal and one Facebook user said they were pulled over by police to report to the police station and banned for life from that store. On a lesser scale, we’ve also seen many people load up trolleys with groceries not in bags then take them to the car and unload all the individual items into their boot. Then they would have to do the same once they return home. That’s a lot of extra effort is you ask us! Use a basket instead There has been a higher number of people taking baskets not only to place items in while shopping in store, but also to pack their groceries into once they have paid. They have then waltzed out the store with their own “reusable bag” in arm. Many have taken to social media to celebrate their triumph and the way they have boycotted the system, but it’s not such a great achievement if you ask us. Only buy what you can carry We’re pretty sure people are buying less. We have seen an increasing 45

number of people walking out of supermarkets carrying an armful of groceries rather than buying a bag. We can’t say that they would have otherwise had bags full of items, but people do seem to be shopping for smaller amounts of groceries at a time. It’s not a terrible strategy, especially if they are cutting down on their shopping bill! Wear a big baggy jumper We know this has occurred because one Get it girl admitted to us she has done it, and she’s seen others do it too. The plastic bag ban came during the right season because jumpers are completely appropriate to wear, albeit less appropriate to scoop up and fill with groceries. But it is slightly more effective than carrying them in your arms. Big, baggy jumpers work best if you’re going to try out this move. And dark sunglasses so no one recognises you! Enlist some helpers The more people you take grocery shopping, the more hands and arms you have to carry your groceries. We have seen this in action too with parents getting children to carry items as they also juggle items in their hands. A better idea would be to offer to babysit several kids then take all of them, that’s a lot of hands you can fill. It is a bit risky though because kids do drop items sometimes. But that’s a risk some are willing to take to avoid those pesky 15c bags! It would be far more effective if you used adults to help you, maybe even hire some male models or topless waiters, we’re sure they can carry plenty and will look good while doing it! Does it matter that reusable bags cost less than the chocolate bar many people grab as they duck in to get some groceries? No. Does it matter that people look pretty darn silly trying any of the above methods? No. All that matters to passionate Aussies is that they avoided paying for a bag. August 2018

H LEO July 22 – August 23 As the dust settles down from last month’s intense lunar eclipse in your relationship sector, you may need some time out to reassess. Your priorities come first right now, but Mercury retrograde action might make this hard to be understood. A brilliant solar eclipse in your sign on the 11th can help you set your sights on possibilities, not liabilities. H VIRGO August 23 - September 22 Your sixth sense may be heighted this month as ruler retrograde action and eclipses energise your spiritual sector. Your highly valued logic may need to take a back seat to your instincts and sense of knowing, especially when it comes to your biggest life questions. Streamline your schedule and allow time for rest, as your personal energy may be low until after the 18th. H LIBRA September 22 – October 23 It’s easy to commit to things when you’re in a good mood and feeling happy. However, as Saturn squares off with your ruler Venus on the 10th, you may need to keep your end of the bargain regarding a promise made earlier in the month. An eclipse in your network sector on the 11th highlights brilliant possibilities both online and in real life. H SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 The professional progress you’ve been striving for is possible this month. A brilliant solar eclipse

will activate your career sector, highlighting future possibilities in achieving your life goals. However, Mercury retrograde madness may bring some delays, curtailing smooth progress. Frustrating as it may be, it may allow for something better to come along, especially if you practice patience. H SAGITTARIUS November 22 – December 22 Jupiter, your patron planet, links up with Neptune from the 14th to the 22nd. You might notice your productivity levels drop, your memory fade and that you’re wishing you were anywhere but here. Take a rest, a weekend away or even a holiday if possible. Inspiration will be heighted and if you allow yourself to slow down, your best ideas and insights may propel you toward something more meaningful. H CAPRICORN December 22 – January 20 Mercury’s reverse passage through your debt and investments sector may be causing some financial havoc. Processing and paperwork of loans or large purchases may be taking longer than usual. Patience will be your best bet if frustrations mount. A solar eclipse on the 11th suggests that once the dust of confusion settles, bright possibilities are just around the corner. H AQUARIUS January 21 – February 19 All your deepest desires and hopes for the future in love are possible this month. Once you overcome a few initial crossed wires or confusion, a brilliant solar eclipse paves the path of possibilities moving forward. There is a catch though, let go of old habits as thinking patterns and beliefs will be necessary for your heart to truly open. H PISCES February 19 – March 20 You may feel a little run down this month, especially between the 14th and the 22nd. Despite this, your intense workload continues. Mercury retrograde action until the 18th will ensure you’re chasing your tail but a solar eclipse on the 11th can open new possibilities regarding

your time management. Rest is desperately needed and the Full Moon on the 26th is your time to take it. H ARIES March 20 – April 19 While August does continue to have an introspective feel to it overall, a fresh perspective can be gained under the solar eclipse on the 11th. Trusting your instincts and moving in to a new direction is possible as this lunation aligns with the fated North Node. In your creative 5th sector, this eclipse will trigger many facets of your life including fun, romance and children. H TAURUS April 20 – May 21 A solar eclipse on the 11th will bring a fresh new energy into your home and family sector. The final of three eclipses this season invites you to dream big when it comes to your living situation as well as your location. Perhaps you’re longing for more comfortable surrounds or a luxurious living environment. In the bold sign of Leo, anything is possible. H GEMINI May 21 – June 21 Your patron planet Mercury concludes his second retrograde cycle for 2018 on the 18th. Logistical issues, plans, projects or communication snafus that began late July will iron out and begin to gain traction in a positive direction once again. As Mercury slowly begins to garner speed toward the end of August, you may notice a boost in your personal energy, both physical and mental. H CANCER June 21 – July 22 A solar eclipse on the 11th shows brilliant possibilities regarding your cash flow this month. Aligned with the fated North Node of the Moon, your ruling star, this eclipse can bring forward opportunities for you to realise your earning potential. New Moons are always about setting intentions for what you wish to manifest. As an eclipse, this brings a level of potency and possibility unlike a regular lunation.

GET IT I LAST WORD

LET'S TALK Sarah Blinco helps us get down to business

he packed conference room was buzzing with excited energy; the popularity of the break-out session I’d just witnessed had obviously been underestimated because people were sitting and standing in every free space. I, like all the attendees, had been impressed by the generosity of the speakers who hadn’t held back on sharing wisdom about their business success strategies. Dazzled, I simply had to meet them! I lined up with other inspired folk at the end of the session to say hello, and when it was my turn to swiftly meet-and-greet, I spoke but a few words, handed over a business card and scurried off. Significant networking fail. We’re coming into our final quarter of the year, and with so much on the horizon here on the GC including conferences, events and a host of personal and professional growth opportunities, there’s a good chance you might find yourself in a situation like this and I’m here to urge you to make it work for you (better than I made it work for me). There’s no doubt that networking fast-tracks the opening of career and business doors, through the gaining of new tips to improve your work, learning that accelerates growth, finding customers or a new job, making friends or discovering people who become future business partners, mentors and collaborators. Yet, many of us cringe at the very thought of networking, and when we finally get ourselves in front of the crowd, we’re often ill-prepared, shy and take the wrong approach. I soak up conferences — I love the learning and the inspiring presenters. I have always known the networking component is seriously valuable, but for many years I’ve made the errors referenced above. When running my own business, I had to get stuck into the networking game, faking it ‘til I made it, so to speak. For every person I met, I had a chance to discover how I might add value to what they were working on, and critically, much of that led to paid business. It’s easy to slip into shy/tired/straight-up complacency though — hanging out with the same people, caught scrolling emails on your phone, feeling stuck for conversation, or marching right on in there with your business card. Shamefully, I’ve done it all. But, here’s my intention for us from now on: be open to opportunity. Make it your mission to connect with new people at each August 2018

event you go to, and get to know them on a personal level. Rather than only talking business, see if you can discover what hobbies, work, people, heroes, background or interests you have in common. Critically, listen. Ask questions, be interested, helpful, and listen some more. If you have a few conversation-starters up your sleeve, that inevitably improves confidence when you approach someone new in a room. Try things like ‘what brings you here today’, or ‘what are you working on that you’re most excited about right now’? Another element I’ve always struggled with is getting my story right — you know, the ‘30 second elevator pitch’ thing! I have always found it hard to articulate. Probably because I never crafted nor practiced it — which is the final important bit of advice I wish to impart.

Make it your mission to connect with new people at each event you go to, and get to know them on a personal level. Instead of stating your job title when you meet new people, try sharing who you serve, what problem you solve, how you solve it and what results you’ve achieved. For example,‘I serve business owners by helping them produce high quality, creative digital content and this year already I’ve helped more than 45 brands reach their audience and engagement goals within six months of working with me’. Over to you: make the best of what we have left of this year, raise your profile and develop connections that take you closer to your 2018 goals (before we start talking about 2019 already). There’s no time like the present! Keep in mind too, it’s only human to feel shy, reserved, or unsure of what to say. Be honest about it — you can be certain others know the feeling well!
