The Common Read Committee at UC San Diego is pleased to announce the book selected for the second annual Common Read: Talking Across the Divide - How to Communicate with People You Disagree with and Maybe Even Change the World, by Justin Lee.
This book is an entr y point and important guide in learning how to empathize and communicate with people who have widely differing opinions from your own.
The UC San Diego Common Read program identifies a book for new, first-year and transfer students to engage in a shared experience as the newest members of our Triton community. CCR helps demonstrate to employers, graduate/ professional programs, and for awards the competencies and skills you gained through your experience.

Request a custom workshop for your student organization or group, tailored to meet your needs in developing your interpersonal communication skills, leadership style, or your team and group dynamics.
Student Leadership Conference
Student Leadership Conference is a FREE, one-day, on-campus event open to all UCSD undergraduate students. Join us for a day full of engaging workshops, reflective activities, and connection-building. Through reflective exercises and interactive workshops, participants will explore the intersections of their identities, name their own stories, and recognize the power they hold to effect positive change within themselves and their communities. “This was my first time participating in any event [MLK Day of Service], and it really made me want to join more events and try to contribute to my community. I am a political science major and some of the things I learn about in class are about race, and minorities being oppressed. This event brought a bunch of people together to clean up!”

TRADITION WELCOME WEEK UNOLYMPICS
During UnOlympics, all seven colleges participate in zany competitions that range from a variety of lawn games, relay races, and trivia questions. We finish this annual event with each college showing a dance routine. Colleges vie for the coveted Golden Shoe Trophy (and bragging rights) by participating in a series of spirited events, competing in cheers, games, and dances.

TRADITION WATERMELON DROP
The tradition began in 1965 when a freshmen Physics class took a question posed by a professor to the next level! Each year, a watermelon is dropped from the 7th floor of Urey Hall so students can measure its velocity on impact and determine just how far pieces of the fruit can splat. On the first year, the distance from the point of impact to the farthest piece found was recorded at 91 feet!
