editor's little love note “It's been a long, long time coming, But I know a change gonna come” When I decided to take “a short break“ from publishing BOSSY! Magazine way back in 2018, the plan was to take off a few weeks maybe a month, rest and regroup. I figured I’d be up and churning out monthly issues again in no time.

The truth was I was burnt out. Juggling a family, a full-time job, plus several side hustles, hosting live shows in addition to covering red carpet events and trying to eek out monthly and then even bi-monthly issues by myself was too much. I was starting to dread the work I once loved. BOSSY! went from being a reason I jumped out of bed in the morning, to a reason to hide under the covers.

I felt enormous pressure to be and do more. We were growing rapidly. After several disappointing starts at forming a solid team, I’d started to distrust people with my vision and if I’m keeping it a buck, I’d even started to lose sight of what that was myself. I could no longer publish BOSSY! because I just didn’t feel very bossy anymore.

The last year and half has been a roller coaster for me both personally and professionally. Every time I would say we were coming back I was hit with another upheaval, financial losses, heartbreak, death, a house fire, illness. For a while, BOSSY! in its magazine form just seemed like another thing I’d lost.

As I began to work through the heartache in my life and heal my soul’s wounds. I discovered new passions and rediscovered some old ones. I learned to give myself grace. I figured out who I was and I started to surround myself with people who supported me and my healing and growth. I found a business partner who belives in the dream and I built a team who loves the BOSSY! brand and that I could trust with its most valuable commodity. You! Through this hiatus, you never stopped supporting, encouraging me and assuring me that the BOSSY! voice matters. Thank you for your patience. This issue is for all the loyal, friends, family and fans of BOSSY! Don’t call it a comeback, we’ve been here for years. #stillbossy

The Beauty of First Dates Dating is supposed to be exciting, right? Then why is there so much anxiety when it comes to first dates?

Dating shouldn’t be hard but we make it almost impossible to create a carefree atmosphere for such a simple event. Why do we put so much pressure on someone we don’t even know?

I offer date coaching to my clients that help them understand the do’s and don’ts of dating and how to get out of their own way to find their someone.

Here are my 5 Principals to Fun First dates and a few “Don’ts” To always remember.

ADRIENNE’S 5 PRINCIPALS TO FUN FIRST DATES Fun and friendly- A first date should be a fun experience. You should go out at least twice a month meeting new people and hopefully learning something new about someone you don’t know. Think of a first date like how you’d go out and meet a friend for drinks. You’re there to have good conversation, food and to have a brief exchange of energy with a new friend.

Introduction- A first date is exactly just that, an introduction. You’re not about to leave the restaurant and walk down the aisle. Think of the date as a trailer to a movie or a series on Netflix. The trailer shows you some key parts of the show.

You can decide to watch the whole movie which is like going on a 2nd, 3rd, and 4th date. You can watch the entire movie or series only if you like what you see and hear and are intrigued enough to sit through it.

Go Dutch Relax- Go DUTCH! This is just a first date. You aren’t going to be in a relationship afterwards if you happen to like this persons’ personality, looks or demeanor.

If you remove the pressure of it being such a serious event to it being a casual date to meet a friend, then you open up your mind to more possibilities.

Removing the pressure of payment gives you the opportunity to get to know someone genuinely, free from judgement.

ADRIENNE’S 5 PRINCIPALS TO FUN FIRST DATES

"Stop talking about politics on a first date. STOP IT!"

Simple. Keep the conversation simple and vague. Talk about interests, hobbies, likes and dislikes. It’s not an interview.

Don’t go in depth and reveal too much information about your personal life. No one needs to know what type of underwear you prefer or if you can tie a cherry stem with your tongue. You’re doing too much if someone can go home and think about the sexual conversation you had on a FIRST date.

Don’t Talk about SEX. A person who meets you for the first time shouldn’t have that much access to your mind, body or spirit in such an intimate way.

Timing and type: Lots of people who end up together happen to have the right timing of when they meet someone. But if you never give someone the opportunity to meet you, then you’ll never know if they are your type. We try to write someone off as soon as they say something or text something we don’t like. Once you set up the date, stop all communication and just build the anticipation of meeting them in person.

Your typical type, ISN’T YOUR TYPE. You’re cutting yourself off from so many potential partners because you keep letting your eyes choose your type. Let your spirit choose. Let the way a person makes your heart feel determine your type. Your eyes can play tricks on you, your heart usually gives you some grace.

Don’t try to take Control of the Date.

The conversation should be casual. Over talking someone or interrogating the dater with a barrage of questions about their salary, or their past relationships will make the atmosphere tenser and more uncomfortable and that’s the last thing you want on a first date.

Don’t talk about Politics, Ex’s, or WORK. Stop talking about politics. STOP IT! The end (I don’t need to say anymore in regards to that topic) Do not bring up your ex’s, please.

You don’t know this person well enough to know who they might be acquainted with or how uncomfortable they may feel speaking about another man or woman that you’ve been with intimately. It’s just weird. Cut it out! Stop talking about your job or workplace. Half of the population hates their job and that emotional discourse in regards to it, can bring down the energy and the atmosphere is supposed to be enjoyable.

Leave talk about your workplace out of the conversation.

Write down a few topics you want discuss and go have fun. Dating is fun. Getting to know someone new, is fun. Keep it light and enjoy the experience.

Finding joy in 2020? It’s not such an absurd idea, really The year 2020 hasn’t been one to remember – in fact, for a lot of people it has been an outright nightmare. The pandemic, along with political turmoil and social unrest, has brought anxiety, heartbreak, righteous anger and discord to many.Amid such suffering, people need some joy.As a scholar who has investigated the role of joy in day-to-day life, I believe that joy is an incredibly powerful companion during suffering.

Speaking at funerals, teaching joy. This is more than academic work for me. In late 2016, less than a year after I was hired to be on a team researching joy at Yale University, three of my family members unexpectedly died within four weeks: my cousin’s husband Dustin at 30 by suicide, my sister’s son Mason at 22 of sudden cardiac arrest, and my dad, David, at 70 after years of opioid use.

While researching joy, I was speaking at funerals. At times, even reading about joy felt so absurd that I almost vowed to be anything but joyful.

In 2020, many people can relate to this.I want to be clear: Joy is not the same as happiness. Happiness tends to be the pleasurable feeling we get from having the sense that life is going well.Joy, on the other hand, has a mysterious capacity to be felt alongside sorrow and even – sometimes, most especially – in the midst of suffering.

This is because joy is what we feel deep in our bones when we realize and feel connected to others – and to what is genuinely good, beautiful and meaningful – which is possible even in pain. Whereas happiness is generally the effect of evaluating our circumstances and being satisfied with our lives, joy does not depend on good circumstances.

An illuminationA couple of days after my cousin’s husband died, a small group of family members and I were shopping for funeral items when the group decided to go to the place where Dustin had died by suicide. It was getting dark and the sun had almost set. As we were taking in the landscape we suddenly noticed a star above the trees. Standing next to one another in a line, we looked across the sky and one of us asked whether any other stars could be seen. There were none. We realized that there was just this one exceedingly bright shining star in the sky.

Gazing at the star, we felt as if Dustin had met us there, that he’d allowed that single star to be seen in the sky so that we would know he was all right. It was not the kind of relief we wanted for him.

But for a few minutes we allowed the tragedy of what had occurred in this very space just two days before to hang in the background, and we instead focused on the star.

We were filled with a kind of transformative, quiet joy.

And we all gave ourselves over to this moment.As scholar Adam Potkay noted in his 2007 book “The Story of Joy,” “joy is an illumination,” the ability to see beyond to something more.

Similarly, Nel Noddings, Stanford professor and author of the 2013 book “Caring,” describes joy as a feeling that “accompanies a realization of our relatedness.” What Noddings meant by relatedness was the special feeling we get from caring about other people or ideas.

Joy is also the feeling that can arise from sensing kinship with others, experiencing harmony between what we are doing and our values, or seeing the significance in an action, a place, a conversation or even an inanimate object.

When I teach about joy, I use an example from my family to explain this. When my sister looks at a Mason jar now – whether in someone’s hand filled with tea or bursting with flowers on a friend’s coffee table – it reminds her of her son Mason. It is not just an object she is seeing, but a relationship imbued with beauty, goodness and meaning. It gives her a feeling that can be described only as joy.

We cannot put joy on our to-do lists; it does not work that way. But there are ways we can prepare ourselves for joy.

There are “gateways” to joy that help us to become more open to it.

Gratitude involves bringing to mind the good that is in the world, which makes rejoicing possible.

The feeling that follows contemplating nature or art that we find inspiring is often joy, as these are experiences that help people feel connected to something beyond themselves, whether to the natural world or to others’ feelings or experiences.

Since “hope,” as theologian Jürgen Moltmann has said, is “the anticipation of joy,” writing out our hopes helps us to expect joy.

Three types of joy In my book, “The Gravity of Joy,” I identify multiple kinds of joy that can be expressed even in today’s troubled times.

Retrospective joy comes in vividly recalling a previous experience of unspeakable joy.

For example, we can imagine in our minds an occasion when we helped someone else, or someone unexpectedly helped us, a time we felt deeply loved … the moment we saw our child for the first time.

Finding joy in 2020? It’s not such an absurd idea, really (continued) This kind of joy can be found in apologizing to someone we have hurt, or the feeling that follows recommitting ourselves to sobriety, a marriage or a dream we feel called to.

We can close our eyes and meditate on the memory, even walk through the details with someone else or in a journal and, often, experience that joy again, sometimes even more acutely.

There is a kind of joy, too, that is redemptive, restorative – resurrection joy. It is the feeling that follows things that are broken getting repaired, things that we thought were dead coming back to life. This kind of joy can be found in apologizing to someone we have hurt, or the feeling that follows recommitting ourselves to sobriety, a marriage or a dream we feel called to.

Futuristic joy comes from rejoicing that we will again glimpse meaning, beauty or goodness, and seemingly against all odds feel that they are connected to our very life. This type of joy can be found, for example, through singing in a religious service, gathering at a protest demanding change or imagining a hope we have being realized.

In the midst of a year in which it is not difficult to stumble onto suffering, the good news is that we can also stumble onto joy.

There is no imprisoned mind, heartbreaking time or deafening silence that joy cannot break through.Joy can always find you.

As a millennial, myself, I understand that the economic climate is much different than the one my parents endured. With that being the case, I must adapt. Saving for a rainy day may have worked for my grandparents but it will not provide the financial security needed in today’s uncertain economy.

According to the FDIC, the national average interest rate on a savings account is currently 0.05% APY.

The inflation rate in 2019, according to Statista.com, was 1.81%. To provide context; this means that for every $1000.00 in a savings account, you will earn $5.00 interest at the end of the year but that same $1000.00 will have the spending power of $981.90 due to losing $18.10 in power due to inflation.

In plain language—you are losing money by keeping it in savings accounts.

Saving is no longer an adequate way to build nor maintain wealth.

Investing your money in the right vehicles is the only way to get the most “bang for your buck.� Millennials should be apprehensive about the stock market because we have lived through a recession, a housing crash, and the looming COVID-19. Some even think of investing in the stock market as gambling.

An understanding of the facts will dispel those fears. The facts are this: The average stock market return for 10 years is 9.2%, according to Goldman Sachs data for the past 140 years. The S&P 500 had historically outperformed the general market and yields an average annual return of 13.6%. How does that measure up to your savings account?

The internet is flooded with trading gurus and expensive workshops; but trading and investing are not the same. Investing is safe, but not without risk, and strategies exist for every goal and every personality type. Any millennial that can use a smart phone can become a savvy investor. There are apps that lets users buy shares of companies right from their phone.

There are also apps that act as brokerages and allows users to invest completely hands-free. There are apps that even allows users to invest their spare change. There is no excuse not to make your hard-earned money work as hard for you. Take control of your future by investing in it. It is never too late to start thinking ahead; your future self will thank you. Meet me in the future.

Shevvy Malibu: That’s great advice. but let me go back a minute...You said you were an ideator, and it made me think of discussion I've had with numerous business women. And I’m curious on where you stand, as an entrepreneur I’m sure you get lots of requests for advice, chats, chances to pick your brain, etc.

Some people say hell no, I send people an invoice, I don’t do this for free. And some people are more like, I want to reach out and help, pay it forward, etc. In which camp do you land?

Adrienne: I have learned to always give something for free, even if it’s something small. I may have a conversation to give you an idea. Something small, but you used it and it worked. Now you’ve come back and you’re like “hey I made 150 sales from your idea, how do I make that 1500 or 15,000? And now I know I can take you seriously and you have seen my expertise and you can take me seriously. You’re ready to become a paying client.. That’s my strategy.

Shevvy Malibu: That’s a boss move. Now speaking of boss moves, You’ve recently been made the managing editor of BOSSY! Magazine and the co-host of BOSSY! Live.during this revamp of BOSSY!..what is it you bring to the role?

Adrienne: So Shevvy you’ve done a great role of showcasing this Boss Mom persona juggling the husband and family and career over the years...but now I want to show women that single moms can make boss moves too. I’m doing this for my sons, I want them to see me do this. It’s good for your kids to see you be 100% in your purpose. While we have some of the same values, we come from different backgrounds and we also have some very different opinions and beliefs. That is gonna make for an interesting mix. I’m looking forward to the journey.

What does it mean to CREDITORS and LENDERS? It means “you” don’t matter BUT your ability to be trusted with their money does. Credit is a big deal, as I'm sure you’ve been told. However, It’s time that you take YOURSELF out of the equation as a business owner.

When you own a business you should never rely SOLELY on your personal credit to fund your business expenses. As a small business owner, your business credit is paramount in showing if your business is suitable to be loaned money and most importantly, repay it.

After we take YOU out of the equation, we now replace it with your business name.

Separation of Personal (Church) and Business (State) Separation of church and state has been a part of our nation's legal and cultural language since the early 1800s. If it has worked so well for our great nation, then think of how great it will work for your business practices.

Separation of personal and business credit is imperative in understanding, especially when it comes to growing your company and being able to leverage capital. The same steps you took to build your credit are the same steps you should take to build your business credit.

Pay your bills on time to build a positive payment history and check for accuracy to ensure your business credit score stays in good standing. The number one perk for me in acquiring business credit, is that it limits your personal liability so, in the case of your business going under, your personal credit will be protected. Your business is your baby, so teach your baby good financial literacy.

By doing so, you protect your business just like you’d protect your child. As we go through this pandemic, we have seen many small business owners, especially black business owners, left out of loan relief, forced into bankruptcy, and having to dissolve. We need to be more proactive in acquiring business credit and leveraging the second-best option for business sustainability, especially during difficult times.
