Every winter, the Virgin Islands welcome some of the most extraordinary visitors on Earth: the North Atlantic Humpback Whales. These gentle giants...stretching up to 50 feet long travel thousands of miles from their summer feeding grounds near Iceland, Greenland and the cold waters of the North Atlantic to reach the calm, protected Caribbean basins surrounding the USVI and BVI
Their arrival is one of the most mesmerizing natural events of the year. Locals know the subtle signs: the sudden V-shaped plume on the horizon, the flash of a fluke against the sun, the distant echo of a slap on open water Charter boat captains begin scanning the channels more closely
The fish boys pause to marvel at a breaching calf. Beachgoers turn into instant photographers the moment a tail rises.
And every year, like clockwork, the cycle repeats; a migration older than human memory, guided by instinct, the stars and survival.
Humpbacks migrate from November through April, with their peak presence around January–March. While most whales in the world migrate for food, the humpbacks that arrive in the Caribbean do something different: they come to give birth and raise their young
The warm, shallow waters around St. Thomas, St. John and the British Virgin Islands are uniquely suited for newborn calves.

Warm water helps calves regulate body temperature (they are born with almost no blubber).
Shallow, calm bays reduce the risk of predatory attacks from orcas or large sharks.
Gentle currents allow newborns to practice surfacing and breathing without exhaustion. Protected geography between islands creates quiet “nursery zones.”
Humpback mothers often fast during this time, living off stored energy while nursing calves that can drink up to 150 gallons of milk per day. The mothers remain close to the calves as they learn to swim, breach, dive and develop muscle before the long migration north.
Top Viewing Areas Around St. Thomas & St. John
The Virgin Islands sit alongside natural migration lanes, but several local hotspots consistently offer the best chances for sightings:
1. The North Drop (North of St. Thomas)
One of the best whale-viewing areas in the Caribbean Deep water meets shelf, attracting mothers and calves as they skim along the edge of the reef.
2. Hull Bay & Botany Bay (North & West Sides)
Locals often report seeing breaches offshore, especially on calm mornings
3. Pillsbury Sound (Between STT & STJ)
A protected channel where mothers sometimes rest with their calves
4. Offshore Waters Near St. John’s North Shore
Between Mary’s Point and Maho, this open stretch offers excellent whale-watching during peak season.
5. BVI Channels (especially between Tortola, Jost, and Anegada)
Adult males typically remain farther offshore, using deeper water channels for singing, competing and searching for females. The island-sheltered bays are reserved for mothers who need calm conditions to care for their vulnerable young.
While solitary males sometimes appear closer to land, the most common sightings near St. Thomas are mother-calf pairs, with playful juveniles occasionally breaching in full tropical sunlight

Seeing a humpback whale in the Virgin Islands is more than a wildlife sighting; it’s an emotional experience. There’s something almost spiritual in watching a creature the size of a school bus lift itself completely out of the Caribbean Sea or seeing a calf learning to breach under its mother’s watchful eye. Residents often describe the first whale sighting of the season as good luck and every year, the islands light up with excitement when the first plume or tail slap is spotted.
Stay 100 yards away
Don’t cut across their path
Reduce speed in nursery zones
Avoid loud or sudden noises
Choose eco-minded operators Why it matters:
Stress can disrupt nursing, resting and calf bonding...all critical for survival during their long migration north.
Humpback whales return to the Virgin Islands each Winter because our warm, sheltered waters create an ideal nursery where mothers can nurse, rest and teach their calves before the long migration north. This predictable pattern makes the USVI and BVI one of the Caribbean’s most reliable places to witness tender early-life behaviors, from tail slaps to first breaches As these gentle giants pass through our channels each season, they offer not only valuable insight for researchers but also a magical reminder for all of us who call the islands home: keep your eyes on the horizon and enjoy one of nature’s most unforgettable holiday visitors.

Rich, creamy and lusciously coconut-forward, Coquito is the unofficial drink of the holiday season in the Virgin Islands; a creamy rum cocktail that blends tradition, family and Caribbean warmth in every pour Whether you sip it chilled from the bottle or serve it over ice at a holiday party, Coquito is as much a part of December in the VI as steel pan music and twinkling lights.

Think silky coconut custard in a glass, spiked with rum and a touch of warm spices
Expect:
Coconut-forward richness
Hints of cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, and vanilla
A cool, velvety texture
A lightly sweet finish that feels like “Christmas on ice” Some versions are thicker and dessert-like; others lighter and more sippable. All of them decadent.
Origin: Puerto Rico, now beloved across the entire Caribbean
Meaning: “Coquito” translates to little coconut
Typical Appearance: Pale, creamy, lightly spiced, served cold
Alcohol Base: Traditionally white rum, but local versions may vary
Shelf Life: 1–2 weeks refrigerated (if it lasts that long!)

Coquito dates back generations in Puerto Rico, where families passed down handwritten recipes that blended coconut milk, rum, spice and plenty of culture As Puerto Rican families migrated throughout the Caribbean; especially the U.S. Virgin Islands, the drink became woven into local celebrations, potlucks, and friendly gatherings Today, many VI families proudly make their own version, often tweaking the recipe with island flair: local rum, nutmeg freshly grated from the bottle-tree, or even a splash of condensed milk “just like Grandma did.”
1 can (13.5 oz) coconut milk
1 can (15 oz) cream of coconut (Coco López style)
1 can (12 oz) evaporated milk
1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk
1 tsp pure vanilla extract
1–2 tsp ground cinnamon (plus more to garnish)
¼ tsp nutmeg
1–1½ cups white rum (adjust to taste)
Optional: a pinch of clove, star anise, or a cinnamon stick for steeping
Prep Serves
STEP 1
Blend the Base
Add all ingredients except the rum to a large blender and blend until smooth and creamy.
STEP 2
Add the Rum
Pour in your rum of choice (White rum is traditional but spiced rum works beautifully too) Blend again until fully incorporated.
STEP 3
Taste & Adjust

Want it sweeter? Add a touch more condensed milk. Want it thinner? Add a splash of coconut milk. Want it stronger? … you know what to do.
STEP 4
Chill Overnight
Refrigerate at least 4–12 hours. Coquito thickens as it chills and flavors deepen.
Looking for the island’s best bottles? During December, Coquito pops up all over St. Thomas; especially at holiday markets and local community events. Here’s where you’re most likely to find authentic, small-batch Coquito:
Local Markets & Pop-Ups
Bordeaux Farmers Market (West End): A community favorite where local makers often sell homemade Coquito alongside baked goods, crafts, and island produce.
Saturday Downtown Market (Charlotte Amalie): Held along Main Street and surrounding alleys; expect rotating vendors offering classic, pistachio, almond and specialty holiday flavors
Holiday Shopping Events
Holiday Market at Crown Bay: A festive seasonal market where artisans typically offer beautifully bottled Coquito perfect for gifting
Miracle on Main Street: The biggest holiday festival of the year; stroll between booths to find local vendors selling their own Coquito blends.
Stores & Local Makers
Moe’s Fresh Market (Havensight & Red Hook): Often carries locally made, small-batch Coquito varieties during the holiday season.
Local Independent Vendors: Throughout December, expect pop-up tables, Instagram sellers and word-of-mouth favorites offering traditional and flavored Coquito across the island; especially in Frenchtown, Tutu, Red Hook and Havensight.
