GROWING IN MISSION

FROM THE PRESIDENT & PRINCIPAL Dear Friends of Gesu School, At Gesu School, our mission drives all that we do.

Co-directed by the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (IHM) and the Jesuits, we empower our 400 students to transcend all forms of poverty through holistic, innovative education.

We nurture our students to develop their strengths, overcome challenges, and become positive, engaged members of the community.

Our teachers and staff are exceptionally dedicated to our Catholic principles of social justice, faith, creative hope, and love. And we accompany our students as they grow.

In fiscal year 2025, the average annual income of a Gesu family of four was $45,609. Many of our students confront the significant challenges that ensue from living in poverty, such as trauma from exposure to violence in their neighborhoods, or health-related issues like hunger or asthma.

To address these challenges, a Gesu education encompasses care for the whole person. In addition to rigorous academics for remedial through advanced learners, we provide comprehensive resources to meet our students’ needs:

Robust social work and counseling services, nurse, and nutrition programs Soft skills curriculum that teaches grit, empathy, and self-esteem

To provide these essential resources, Gesu relies on the support of donors. Each year, we fundraise nearly 75% of our operating budget, including critical scholarships, for our students to maximize their potential.

After-school enrichment that delivers a safe space, homework help, and experiences such as theater, sports, and crochet club

We thank our entire community, who make a Gesu education possible. Your generosity, care, and time impact students each day.

Graduate Support Program that offers resources through high school, college, and professional life

Graduate Support Program Our 18-Year Commitment The Peter Gould & Robin Potter Graduate Support Program aims to ensure that Gesu students, starting in 7th grade, and alumni continue their educational advancement, fulfill their potential, and maintain productive roles in society. The GSP supports all alumni after they have moved on to high school, college, or the workforce and assures alumni that Gesu will always be their home. Gesu walks with our alumni as they pursue their educational and personal goals in becoming independent, lifelong learners.

ALUMNI ACCOLADES Gesu alumna Briana ’16, Research and Product Development Scientist, returned to Gesu to meet with middle-school girls about her educational and career experience. She reflected on her time at Gesu and its foundation in building her faith, confidence, and academic strengths, especially in writing and science. At Gesu, Briana participated in the gospel choir and track. She continues to cultivate her interest in dance.

Her career goals include graduate school and a leadership role in the cosmetic industry, where she plans to “make an impact and be a representation for women and girls, especially for women of color, who’ve often been neglected in that space. And be the bridge for consumers in understanding science and the cosmetic industry.”

“My success as a young woman stems from a combination of a lot of things: my family, being in spaces like Gesu from a young age, and my faith and relationship with God. It started as early as Pre-K. It’s important to surround yourself with a community that uplifts you.

Gesu has cultivated that space for me. Looking around the building, you see murals of Black excellence. I had Black teachers, and those role models and that foundation were really important. It has always been instilled in me to reach for my best potential because I was surrounded by positive examples and taught about leaders in history who look like me who accomplished the impossible.”

He participated in Gesu’s Writers’ Jam talent show and the gospel choir. He continues to enjoy hobbies in breakdancing, music, and drawing. His Advanced Writing class at Gesu sparked his interest in storytelling and ultimately laid a foundation for his professional path in communications.

Denzell credits his father for sending him to Gesu, which he describes as “the best chance for me to be what I define as successful,” a Catholic school that was the “right place.” And Denzell acknowledges that his Gesu community shaped his leadership skills, his confidence, and his interest in the arts and politics. Through Gesu’s Graduate Support Program, he networked to earn an internship with State Representative Donna Bullock. This experience impacted the course of his career, leading directly to his current role at the World Trade Center.

He notes, “Even the small things—Sister Ellen encouraging me to apply to the Prep and connecting me with a mentor, teachers pushing me into academic competitions—helped me see potential in myself that I didn’t always recognize. Gesu was the first place that showed me I belonged in spaces I never imagined for myself.”

Today, Denzell is a leader in his field and in his community at just age 26.

“Gesu gave me the space to both excel and fail forward, which was something I never experienced in public school. It was the first time I had to study, the first time I earned (and actually earned) second honors, and the first time I felt academically challenged in a way that pushed me to grow. It also mattered that so many of my teachers were people of color. I didn’t realize it back then, but having adults who looked like me call me a ‘gentleman and scholar’ shaped how I saw myself and what I believed I could do.

Gesu is where I fell in love with social studies, which eventually led me to political science and now to my career in global work. It’s also where I deepened my faith.”

Black History Month Murals

Kindergarteners shared their pride in their class mural with Gesu Trustees Kate Hovde (left) and Sherri Darden (right). The mural contest provides an opportunity for each class to collectively research and celebrate Black culture, contributions, and heritage.

Gesu Symposium on Education Teaching Civil Discourse in Our Current Society Gesu welcomed Dr. Eddie Glaude, Jr., author, media commentator, and Princeton University professor, as keynote speaker. Dr. Glaude addressed civil discourse in our country, how it impacts the classroom, and strategies educators can utilize to empower students to mindfully engage on pressing topics. A Q&A moderated by Dr. Howard Stevenson of the University of Pennsylvania followed. Gesu was honored to present this event to more than 300 attendees in person and virtually.

One Day Challenge

Gesu Theater Program

More than 675 friends nationwide contributed to Gesu’s 2025 One Day Challenge, raising $140,000! Students donated nearly $2,000 in “change for change.” Each gift provides hope and life-changing education for 400 children.

Gesu’s theater program presented Annie Kids, featuring 3rd through 8th graders.

In response to the fires in California, Gesu students held a fundraiser to support Loyola High School in Los Angeles, a Jesuit partner school. During Catholic Schools Week, students, faculty, and staff raised $750, which was matched by both Gesu School and the Jesuit Schools Network, bringing the grand total to $2,250.
