September 2019 An Interview with Jackie Presley by Isobel Abbott-Dethrow Last month, Isobel Abbott-Dethrow sat down with the members of St. Louis band Jackie Presley: Aaron, Max, Kelly, and Ben.
curious about how the music scene works there, considering that quite a few Webster bands are part of the overall St. Louis scene. *Max does not go to Webster. Aaron: We all hang out, we all know each other in some way. Max: Big Tobacco could be considered a Webster band, since Chris, Daniel, and Coleman go there; there’s the Sigmund Frauds, everyone goes to Webster there except George. Kelly: George used to go to Webster. Aaron: Frankie Valet has ties to Webster. Ben: Specifically for us, I met Aaron at freshman orientation, which is how he joined Handsome Boy. We all became friends, then him and Handsome Boy turned into him and Jackie Presley. Kelly: Coleman had messaged me on Instagram and I was almost in a band with him. Max: I met Kelly through Coleman. If you’re a musician at Webster, the other musicians will eventually find you. Ben: It is a pretty small school, so it is really easy to find people. Aaron: It really is a small music scene. There are not many bands our age.
Isobel: How did Jackie Presley come together? Max: I had written a bunch of songs last winter. I never recorded, wrote the lyrics, or did anything with them. Springtime came around, everyone else who was in Big Tobacco* started making pages and posting music with their solo stuff. I wanted to start doing something, so I just started writing all the songs, arranging them and I would post my really crappy demos on SoundCloud. Eventually, I made a post saying I would love to get a band together and start playing live shows again. I got a message from Kelly, Ben, and Aaron that they all wanted to join. It sounded like an all-star cast to me, so after that, we started playing together around early spring. Aaron: It was about March or February after I got kicked out of Handsome Boy*. Ben: It was during the two months that Handsome Boy wasn’t doing anything. *Big Tobacco was a St. Louis band that Max was a member of. *Aaron, Max, and Ben were all members of St. Louis band Handsome Boy.
Isobel: Is there a difference from bands in the conservatory? Ben: Definitely. I have had the opportunity to record some conservatory bands through Webster’s recording classes because they are around. I don’t really know the people in the bands that much, except for Daniel from Big Tobacco. The connections are there but are not as strong as we would like them to be. No conservatory bands have played Webster Presents shows, so they have never been in those circles. They play at Webster Garden Cafe and whatnot. It’s different, but they are connected still. Isobel: Is there any meaning behind the name? Aaron: They play the smaller shows. You can’t have a show where Max: I love this question. It’s my favorite one because it always there’s a jazz group then hard rock right after, so that’s kind of throws everyone off. I was literally playing Fortnite one night with my friends Garrett and Coleman (from Big Tobacco); I don’t why. remember how someone said it, but I just remember Coleman Max: I would like to have that. saying, “...Jackie Presley.” I thought it sounded cool, and that one day I would name my solo project that. Then, three months later Ben: I want to hear more of the conservatory bands. after I started recording all the songs, I thought, “Well, I guess I’ll call it ‘Jackie Presley.’” There was a brief moment in time where Isobel: What was the process like composing “Happy”? September 2019 Max: We started with the drums then we did rhythm guitar… All of the songs we are playing right now, I wrote over half a year ago. I just remember coming home from work one day and I wrote the lead part first and thought, “That sounds really cool,” then put some chords over it then went to bed. I would play it every day afterwards but never wrote lyrics for it until three months later when I decided I needed to start doing stuff. I think I wrote it because I needed to write lyrics. I wrote the lyrics for all the songs on this demo that night; I didn’t leave my room until I had all the lyrics formed. I think I just started taking my antidepressants and thought, “Alright, this is cool, I’ll write about how I’m feeling differently and now, things are cool.”
Isobel: How long have you been performing live? Kelly: Our first show was June 1st, for LUFest at Foam. Ben: It was terrifying. Max: It was also really fun. Aaron: It’s been less than two months. Max: We’ve played two other shows since then. Ben: The Way Out Club was so fun. Ben: We’re playing with Summer Like the Season and Frankie Valet at Foam soon, on September 24th. Max: We’re also playing with Lobby Boxer for their tour kickoff show on August 23rd. Isobel: What’s been your favorite show to date? Ben: Definitely Way Out Club. Max: Our very first show. Kelly: It has to be LUFest. Max: We had a huge crowd at LUFest. I was going insane; there was a whole lot of energy. Ben: I was all anxiety for those first few shows. Way Out Club was the first one I could actually enjoy. Max: I was having the time of my life at our very first show. I fell over probably four times. Ben: He just kept tripping. Max: I was moving my body so much. Aaron: His hair was all over the place, my hair was all over the place. Max: There was so much noise. It was great. Ben: Objectively, that was the most energy we’ve had at a show. Everyone we love came out. It was amazing. So far, all of the
shows have been good some way or another. Isobel: Are there any shows in the future that you are excited for? Max & Ben: Lobby Boxer. Aaron: Lobby Boxer and Frankie Valet. Ben: Frankie Valet and Summer Like the Season is going to be so good. Max: We played with Summer Like the Season at the Way Out Club. They’re from Detroit. Isobel: I haven’t come across any STL bands that categorize themselves as shoegaze until Jackie Presley. In fact, I feel like shoegaze is a rare gem in the late 2010s. What drove you to produce shoegaze? Ben: Loveless by My Bloody Valentine. Max: In my senior year of high school, I started listening to a lot of Salvia Palth. That really inspired me to start making shoegazy stuff. Loveless was also a huge influence. Ben: Personally, Loveless is one of my favorite albums of all time. It’s just amazing. As soon as Max said he was starting a band and said the word “shoegaze”, I was all in. Max: Yo La Tengo is another influence. I love the “Sugarcube” and “Cherry Chapstick” stuff. I love heavy, fuzzy-sounding things. I love and always wanted to make music like that and didn’t have a pedalboard of my own until I got one eventually. Kelly: You built that recently? Ben: When we were in Handsome Boy, he had two pedals. Max: November was when I got my first set of pedals. It was a lot of money on that board. It’s got a lot of effects; it does what it’s supposed to do. I’m about to get the Avalanche Run, too.
Isobel: Are you more influenced by older shoegaze, such as Slowdive, Lush, My Bloody Valentine, or more modern/current music? Max: I would say older shoegaze, but I try to put a modern twist. Ben: You try to make it poppy. Max: It doesn’t help that the only song released right now is our most poppy song, but that’s the only song on our setlist that has no fuzz or distortion in any way. Our other songs are much more heavier. The song “Miss You” is a happy, little fun song up until the end when we do that giant noise jam. I try really hard to write catchy melodies and make shoegaze more appealing to people who maybe aren’t used to that style of music. Shoegaze is so niche. It’s going to be hard to develop a fanbase besides people who

September 2019 already like shoegaze and trying to get people to listen to a fun band. Kelly: It’s a gateway drug. Max: Exactly, I’m trying to be like Chuck Berry to rock’n’roll.
Isobel: When should we expect the record to come out? Max: October at the latest. Ben: Late fall. Max: It’ll be an EP. Aaron: That makes it more doable. Isobel: How has the recording process been for your new Max: Hopefully by then, we will have enough newer songs for record? an album after the EP is released. We’ll have to find an interim Kelly: Finding out when we don’t work, then record whenever we bass player, since Ben is going to Vienna from winter to spring, can. so if anybody’s interested in playing bass and knows there is no Max: We’re trying our best. It’s a hard time right now, because guarantee that you will be in the band when Ben gets back. we all work a lot. Schedules don’t seem to line up right now. Ben: I have all of my parts written down. It’ll be easy. Aaron: But, we have the drums and bass done. Max: He writes down everything and also is not replaceable. Ben: The recording process is going well, albeit slow. However, we are getting some steam going soon, and what we have recorded so far sounds really good. Aaron: It’s all done in my home studio. Isobel: Give me your favorite venue to play or watch shows at in STL. Aaron: Delmar Hall, even though we have never played there. Kelly: I like Foam. Max: Foam is wonderful. Ben: Foam deserves all the love they can get. Kelly: The Old Rock House too, because of their nachos and couches. Max: The Old Rock House is my favorite. Aaron: They’ve got good nachos and good couches. Max: I’ve been to the Old Rock House twice. I saw Big Thief and they didn’t have an encore. Total power move.

September 2019 The Lincoln: History, Music, Movies and More by Michelle McIntosh
Sitting in the heart of Downtown Belleville is the historic gem known as The Lincoln Theatre. Built in 1920, a contest was performed to name the theatre. By August 18,1920 six people had suggested The Lincoln. 368 entries were submitted in total and the 6 winners each received season tickets as prizes.
Before opening in 1921 the ground where the Lincoln stands was home to the Mansion Hotel which was destroyed by a fire and was known to have had Charles Dickens as a guest in 1812. When the Lincoln opened, it started with four acts of vaudeville (specialty acts such as burlesque, comedy, song and dance) and the silent movie “The Old Nest” starring Dwight Crittendon and Mary Alden. Soon after opening, the Lincoln became the premier theatre for all of southern Illinois. Many famous names graced the Lincoln Theatre stage in the early days including Ginger Rogers in 1926 at the tender age of 15 and The Marx Brothers (a.k.a. The Three Nightingales and The Four Nightingales.) In 1927, a Wurlitzer organ was purchased and installed to replace the full orchestra. This instrument was called a unit orchestra, since it allowed full accompaniment to silent films. The last silent film to be played at the theatre was in March 1929 and soon after in August the organ was silenced due to the popularity of the new “talkie” movies. The organ was eventually completely removed.

The Lincoln Theatre has stood the test of time and today it can be seen much like it was in the 1920s. In 1980, Richard Wright bought the theatre and started to restore it to its glory days. Richard’s one dream was to once again have a theatre pipe organ and began collecting organs and parts. In the 1990s the task of rebuilding and restoring these parts started and soon, in 1996, the current organ was dedicated. As it stands today, the organ has 16 ranks (voices) of pipes which can be played from its three manuals (keyboards) or from the pedals. From the console the organist can also play real percussion instruments such as drums, chimes, xylophone and more. The organ is still played every weekend on Friday and Saturday nights by Dave Stephens, Henry Evans and Jack Moolman before the 7pm shows. The current owners, Sandy (Richard’s Daughter) and her husband Dave Schoenborn, have continued with keeping tradition of the theatre intact. With the color schemes throughout the theatre to the décor. The proscenium arch detail was painted by Sandy’s sister Kathy Going. All this while still keeping prices low. In 2018 the Lincoln Theatre started having Live concerts that have included: Old Salt Union, The Edgar Winter Band, The Schwag (a grateful dead tribute), Madman’s Diary (an Ozzy Ozbourne tribute), Masterwork’s Broadway Pops (Adult and Children’s Choir), 4 & 20 (Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young tribute), Traveling Salvation Show (Neil Diamond Tribute), Big Mike and the Blue City All Stars, Suzy Bogguss and, most recently, Jo Dee Messina with Alexandria Kay. “Moving to concerts seemed like a good way to expand our business,” said Dave Schoenborn, “by going back to our roots of live theatre. At a live concert you can experience once-in-alife-time things, such as Edgar Winter’s impromptu solo or Jo Dee’s audience interactions.” On August 25th was a concert event called “Those Were The Days!” featuring Jack Moelmann and Nick Renkosik on the Wurlitzer organ with Henry Evans and Winn Pardee. It was a family show of pops music, a sing-a-long, a 12-minute silent movie, stand-up comedy and more. The next upcoming live show is Bill Forness Presents The Folsom Prison Experience (a tribute to Johnny Cash, June Carter, The Statler Brothers, Carl Perkins, The Carter Sisters, and The Tennessee Three. “I always had a dream to perform at the Lincoln,” said Bill Forness. “I have been seeing movies there since I was 7 years old and always thought it was a magical place.” This will be Bill’s first Johnny Cash tribute show done in his hometown (Belleville) since he started doing tributes in 2010. His upcoming concert will have lots of hit songs themed around the iconic 1968 album “Live from Folsom Prison”. The Lincoln Theatre is more then just a magical place, it’s a place that feels like home. When you walk up to the ticket

Each skeleton is worth 1VP when defeated but undefeated costs 1 heart (1VP) when encountered. If you have no hearts you may not cross over a skeleton without a sword. Items are one time use! All items take 1 inventory slot and you must have empty inventory slots to pick them up. Use of any item means it is discarded and items may not be discarded without first using them. Eggs may never be discarded. You may cross a space more than once. Dark spaces require the use of one torch to travel through each time, even if you already traveled through it before. You may not travel diagonally. Start at the S and end at the E. You must finish if your path hits E.
“The Spun And The Nestless” is for 2-4 players. You each need a drawing utencil of your own color to spin your webs with and share a separate color to draw flies with. Begin in a corner like a good spider and color it’s abdomen in. Everyone plays off of the same rolls of 2 dice, deciding how to play what’s been rolled for themselves. Then you resolve and everyone takes turns placing web one at a time. The player to the left of first player will be first player next round when resolving. The first first player is whoever was the last person to encounter a spider and DID NOT kill it. Everyone is competing to capture flies and score 1 point for each space of their color of web connected to a web that is closed and has captured a fly. A fly is only considered captured when it becomes completely surrounded by a continuous closed web of any size by any number of players: Continuous - Web connected to web connected to web. Closed - Web that may no longer be added to as it has been closed off. Score closed webs for web size of your color per space and multiplying that total for each fly (x2 for 1, x3 for 2, etc.) Flies may end up being shared if more than one player’s webs connect and you successfully capture the fly together but you only get to multiply the fly for spaces of your color of web. Webs don’t have to connect and you may work on more than one web at a time. You must however always place webs in a space that is orthogonlly adjacent (anything but diagonal) to a space with your previous webs in it whether or not the web itself connects to the previous webs. When your web connects to another player’s you may place webs adjacent to any of their webs that are connected to yours like you would your own own (connected or unconnected). When someone rolls the dice: You will decide for yourself which number rolled will be: the number of empty spaces (excluding 5 - 6) you will be putting web or web/flies in. AND which number (excluding 5 - 6) will be the number of sides of each space you must have web on 1s may be either a single endcap of web on 1 side, or a full four sides of web on a space with a fly in it (pictured). 5s and 6s: Both 5 and 6 allow you to place a fly in one already drawn web of your choice OR you may choose to cap off all spaces necessary at once to complete 1 web with a single web each space.

Gary continues with the words of wisdom that have “built” H.O.M.E.: “Don’t be confined to what people say about you, let them have the last word - as long as you have the last act. We teach our youth that anything’s possible. Miles thought outside the box. And that’s what we teach our kids.” Lauren and Gary agree that Miles Davis was a visionary, and they have their own vision as well: When kids arrive to H.O.M.E., they will not be bombarded with being told how to do anything. H.O.M.E. wants to promote and facilitate personal growth, through positive exposure to different elements, in the same atmosphere as Miles used to thrive. Therefore, H.O.M.E. works hard to develop every type of program a child could need in order to create a well-rounded platform of experience; skills they can take with them wherever they go. They cover the arts, music, gardening/healthy living, physical strength, and leadership. They also have a Mutt-i-grees Curriculum program in which they foster social and emotional development through the use of shelter dogs. All this was put together in this location where Miles used to live, to advance the legacy he began. With H.O.M.E.’s help, his wisdom will live on. H.O.M.E. divides its program attendees into age groups to help each other. Children 8-10 are called “milestones,” and they are mentored by the middle and high school students, called “young ambassadors.” The young ambassadors are in turn mentored by “young adult mentors,” people aged 18 to 40’s-ish. Young adult mentors are in turn mentored by seniors and

September 2019 cultivate, connect, and celebrate the community through music, heritage, and art. Though it began with self-initiated effort, and sacrifice, many organizations and other individuals have since come forward to help propel Lauren says, “Just conversing can be educational. Miles Davis had a tiny room upstairs where he used to practice music in, and it’s still in the same general condition as when he did. It’s very cool to witness that space! Sept. 5th, 2019: H.O.M.E. is hosting a meet-and-greet HOMEstyle. It’s an invitation-only event to welcome the family of Miles Davis. This will be their first time seeing the house since it’s been renovated. The purpose of the meet-and-greet is to celebrate and acknowledge Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool, a new documentary outlining all the highlights of how Miles became who he was.
Miles Davis would probably be happy to know that to this day, his legacy is not only helping others to express themselves, but also enriching his old community through their basic needs. All he ever had to do was start SOMEwhere, and that somewhere was what later became House of Miles East St. Louis, H.O.M.E. Sept. 6th, 2019: Opening night for Birth of the Cool! Documentary will be showing September 6th-12th at the Tivoli Theatre in St. Louis, MO. Show times are available online. As a special treat, Miles Davis’s family & Documentary Director, Stanley Nelson, will be there to answer questions after showings, as follows: Fri, Sept 6 - 7:00 PM; Sat, Sept 7 - 4:30 PM and 7 PM; Sun, Sept 8 - 4:30 PM Sept. 26th, 2019: The 4th annual Kind of Blue Fundraiser will be held at the Village Theatre in Centreville, IL from 6-8pm. Emy Blu Emy Blu is from the wonderful St. Louis Metro... She loves mixing old school with new school, bringing Janis Joplin, Prince and James Brown to today’s style music. A hippy at heart she loves to share joy and love and PEACE n bringin’ that vibe. Emy Blu is an all around artist. Growing up in the small town of Troy, IL (just across the river from St Louis) she knew from a very early age she would move to Los Angeles which she did in July of 2014. Upon arriving, she used her musical talents, dancing and acting gifts for America’s Got Talent, The Voice with Adam Levine and Blake Shelton, and did commercials for Nissan, Dairy Queen, and Intuit. Our neighbors are always quiet, And our bathrooms are made of gold. Where people never age, But instead choose to stay old. Enter the void. It’s nice here. Where backyards turn to mountains, And puddles turn to oceans. Where heart breaks are never bad, You’re just cracked, You’re never broken. Enter the void. It’s nice here. Where smiles grow flowers, and the sun is never needed. Where fruits yell “I love you”, While theyre being eaten. Enter the void. It’s nice here. Where everybody greets you, Saying “have a good day”.
