Midwest Kids Shine in Youth Silent Film Festival Article and Photography by Dan Cross On April 11, a new annual event made its debut at the Lincoln Theatre in Belleville: The International Youth Silent Film Festival (Midwest Regionals). 17 short films directed by young people (all under age 20) from eight different states played on the big screen at the Lincoln, accompanied by original organ score music performed live by organ virtuoso Nathan Avakian.

Cliff Froehlich, Executive Director of Cinema St. Louis (which puts on the St. Louis International Film Festival, the St. Louis Filmmakers Showcase) served as one of the judges of the IYSFF Midwest.

“As a whole, the films I saw were impressive, especially considering the age of the filmmakers and the fact that they were all working in a context—silent film—which they had little experience with. But a couple of the films were just jaw-dropping, they were so good.”

The films demonstrated a wide range of styles, from very dark and serious (especially third-place winner “Lex Talionis” by Miles Howell, a horror film about a drunk driver being confronted by people he has killed behind the wheel) to light and whimsical (like “MultiPaul,” the winner of second place). The technical innovation of the films was incredible, especially considering the age of the filmmakers (some as young as 11 years old). Several films made use of stop camera tricks, making objects or people disappear and reappear from shot to shot. “MultiPaul” used split screens brilliantly to help tell the story of an awkward high school kid who is

Belleville has commonly been known as a 3-part city: East side, downtown, and west side. Before too long, a newlydistinguished section of town will be recognized by everyone.

It is called MidTowne Belleville.

MidTowne is designated as a National Register Historic District. In 1852, it was known as the independent Village of West Belleville, and Rose Garden Corner was the village’s public square. The Village of West Belleville merged with the City of Belleville in 1882.

Today, many residents are unaware it was ever a separate identity. As Belleville has grown over the years, it has made more and more sense to revitalize this historic area and ground it into its own place once again.

MidTowne runs from 6th Street (Richland Creek) to 25th Street (Lindenwood University). As part of a 2-year project starting next year, the streets in this strip will be torn up and rebuilt to resemble the downtown area.

This project is expected to accelerate activity in MidTowne, the next big growth area for Belleville. The many businesses operating in the MidTowne area are excited about it. Natalie Kelsey, owner of BlissFull Living Studio at 1901 W. Main, says, “It’s exciting to make a difference in the rebirthing of a neighborhood. By visiting an establishment in MidTowne, you are supporting a community that is bringing in much culture, excitement, nightlife, foods, arts, and entertainment.”

One of her latest accomplishments was having her piece Moon Fire accepted to The Dunedin Fine Art Center’s exhibit, Illumination.

Jacque’s piece is joined by exhibits from fellow members of Art Cloth Network, whose main vision is to “promote the medium of cloth as an art form.”

Jacque’s next project is in response to a call for entries called Fly Me to the Moon to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission. The requirement is for a quilt measuring 18”W x 30”L depicting the artist’s vision of the moon. The entries then will be selected by a jury committee and published in a book by Schiffer Publishing in the fall

Featured Artist of 2018. The hope is that the quilts will be displayed at some of the many Space Centers and Museums.

Jacque is a member of The Textile and Fiber Art List (TAFA). It is a membership association of handmade traditional and contemporary textiles and fiber businesses.

I am including Jacque’s artist statement from the TAFA website because it captures her mission so well: “Every person’s mind builds images while asleep or daydreaming. This language helps us to process and communicate our thoughts and feelings. Even as our dreams are uniquely ours, they have a thread of the everyday world

in them. It is that thread that allows us to recognize the common language spoken in dreams. Cloth, paint, and thread provide the perfect tools to capture the evocative nature of our dreamworld. Cloth, soft and familiar to us all, provides the foundation. Thread connects the layers and lies visible on the surface, and painting can highlight or shadow an image adding another layer of interest. My artwork, through Jacque Davis Textile Arts, is a celebration of our connection to one another.”

I’m not sure how long the clock strikes But with each tick my heart drops Knowing a flick of light Is nothing compared to surrounding sunrise

The parking lot snow is piled into small mountain ranges.

Black grime and carbon from hot exhaust pipes dot the slopes As shoppers negotiate their way around the melting glaciers.

So instead of picking apples I gather them to my cheeks Instead of admiring the black bird I martyr him on my lashes And like a lamb in wolf’s clothing I quite sheepishly emerge

I fear that my pedal is metal and my desire to ram into one Is overwhelming. I am out of control. I circle the parking lot, a condor With speed and curiosity. My car will detonate an avalanche.

Look out K-Mart shoppers! Here I come, ready or not, to rid This pavement desert of grime and winter’s breath out of the ballpark.

Five miles per hour, ten, fifteen, twenty-five. No stopping now.

Physics lesson 101: Mountain’s momentum is no match for me.

Airbag deployment. Gold dust. Chest compressions. Onlookers and Teeth of kids who played on the other side of Mt. Everest Emerging quickly like a sunrise on speed. “You okay, Mister?”

“Don’t call 9-1-1. Don’t call the police. Don’t do anything nice for me.”

“Okay,” they agree. Mad parents asking too many questions.

Police penetrating the outslopes of the mountain. Breath-0’lyser.

Not drunk. Just curious. Why are kids playing in the filthy snow?

“It’s fun. We ski and toboggan while Mama shops For bargains in the store.” Police demand blood but I hold firm, The melting streams of mountain water flow past my feet, tires, words.

Kids don’t stop. Mountain stands firm a few more days as I contemplate a change in wind and warmer weather for tulips And grass and kids who can play in the park, in the swimming pools.

I am certain that my car will not want to go for a swim.
