Perennial: The Community Garage by Dan Cross
Suppose you want to build some barnwood cabinet doors with recessed hinges, but you can’t afford a table saw, a jointer, a drill press, and a complete set of Forstner bits. Or maybe you want to create a funky sculpture out of recycled windows, wire, and broken glass, but have no space in your apartment to store everything (or a spouse who just won’t let you). Or Perhaps you want to explore your creative side but need some guidance from more experienced artists to get you started. What do you do? Go check out Perennial on South Broadway in St. Louis. It’s a combination workshop space, art classroom, and warehouse of repurposed materials, just waiting for you and your creative ideas. And even if you don’t have an artistic bone in your body, just looking at the rows of brightly colored string, buttons, swaths of fabric, beautifully weathered driftwood, and bins of stained glass - and watching the other people who are there making cool stuff - will really get your creative juices flowing. The idea for Perennial began ten years ago with local artist Jenny Murphy, who always had an interest in salvaged and repurposed materials. While in school at Wash U, she developed a proposal for a public art project in which she would collect bulk “trash” (i.e. raw materials), convert it into useful or decorative items, and then have a free sale to distribute everything to good homes, thereby saving piles of potential garbage from the landfill. She applied for a grant, but to her (and her professors’) surprise, the project was not selected for funding. “So many people really liked the idea though, so I decided to figure out how to do it anyway,” Murphy told me at the shop recently. “But I also wanted to teach others how to reuse things, instead of, you know, making everything by myself.”
offer 20-40 classes per month in all kinds of creative arts: like textiles, woodworking, painting, and more. Recent classes included such things as making recycled wooden planter boxes, shibori fabric dyeing, and upcycled stained glass terrariums, as well as recurring classes on how to use power tools and hand tools for woodworking. Perennial also offers “community workshops,” usually once or twice a week, which are like open labs where people can come in and use all of the power tools, sewing machines, blenders, soldering irons, and raw materials for their own projects. They even provide storage space in the basement for art projects in progress.
Walking through the shop, I was astounded by how clean and organized everything was, considering that the place was packed full of every kind of art material and In 2011, Perennial became an official 503(c)3 nonprofit organization and has salvaged object imaginable. There were cardboard boxes labeled “shoelaces,” “bike continued to grow and expand their mission ever since. They now have a spacious tubes,” “belts,” and “nylons,” big wooden drawers labelled “soda cans,” “coffee workshop/classroom/store on South Broadway and Chippewa Street, where they bags,” “string, yarn, and twine.” Plus tin cans full of X-Acto knives, hole punches, scissors, knitting needles, palette knives, compasses, markers, and skewers—all labeled in Jenny’s impossibly perfect handwriting—a boundless supply of everything, yet so well-sorted and arranged that you can easily find whatever you need. It’s worth a visit to the shop just to get ideas for how much better your house could be organized! Best of all, all the materials are for sale for the same amazing low price—one dollar per pound. Whether you want broken tiles for a mosaic, fabric for a sewing project, reclaimed windows, or wine corks—a buck a pound! It’s enough to make anyone want to get building. “Our classes are geared towards adults, but they are open to everyone, so we’ve had 8-year-olds and 65-year-olds in the same class, carving wood spoons from old banister rails,” Murphy explained. “We try to make our programs super-accessible. We even provide scholarships, so that way, we can have someone who lives down the block and someone from West County in here on the same day.” What impresses me most about Perennial is not the benefits they provide to individuals (even though that is amazing), but the benefit they provide to the community. This is not simply art for art’s sake, but rather, art for people’s sake. Murphy explains:

May 2019 “The seed for Perennial was looking at art as an agent for social change, and the big one is environmental social change, so people think differently about the resources we have and how to use them effectively, but the other aspect of that is changing not only the way the community interacts with stuff, but also with each other.” Perennial really lives up to this ideal and puts it into practice. They have partnerships with several social service agencies, like Lydia’s House, which serves women and children recovering from domestic violence, and the Center for Women in Transition, which helps formerly incarcerated women to become self-reliant and independent. The day before my visit to the shop, Perennial held a private furniture-building class for members of Covenant House, a facility for homeless youth. Other outreach programs at Perennial serve homeless adults, immigrants, refugees, and former victims of sex trafficking. “We help empower people by teaching them how to use power tools, build things, and to express themselves,” Murphy said. “That inspirational act of making something with your hands, but instead of just going out to the store and buying materials, you get that extra layer of creative problem-solving and how good that makes your brain feel. We see that a lot in the people who come to the shop.” Perennial is located at 3762 S Broadway, St. Louis, MO 63118. I feel an immense freedom, and power to be and do anything.” Another thing that makes your brain feel good is considering the impact this “community garage” has had on the environment. In 2018, Perennial STL, through their classes, workshops and store, rescued an incredible 9,500 pounds of material from the landfill, turning it instead into useful and beautiful works of art. St. Louis is fortunate to have such a great organization working to make a difference in the environment and the community at the same time!

May 2019 An Interview with Frankie valet Isobel Abbott-Dethrow sat down with the St. Louis band Frankie valet and talked to members Jack, Jake, Alison, and Gram. Isobel: How and when was Frankie valet formed? Jake: Gram and I played songs together; I didn’t want to play songs alone, so I had Gram come along with me. Our first gig was a KWUR stack session, which was sort of how I met Jack. Our friend Daniel played tambourine and eventually it kind of morphed, with some different folks coming in, like these folks (Jack and Alison). Gram: I quit music for a summer and then more people joined--naturally--so the band could stay together. Then, I came back and we had two drummers for a while... that was awesome. We just kept switching instruments; Jack was playing bass. Jack: I played guitar, then bass, then guitar again. Gram: We just kept switching... Jack stopped playing bass, then Al played bass. We had keyboarders at one time or two. Jack: The timeline now: around September 2016, Jake starts writing songs on guitar, then in October 2016, Jake and I meet at the Way Out Club. Jake and Gram went to high school together, Alison and I went to college together. When Gram stopped, I joined in Summer 2017 on guitar; Jim was also on guitar, Other Jake was on bass, and Matt was on drums, but Jim and Other Jake back to college, and I went on bass. Gram then came back, so there were two drummers, a bassist, and guitarist. Jake: That lasted for a long enough time, about a year. Gram: I feel like that was more or less the formation of the original Frankie valet. That’s when the name changed, we were Sleepeasies. Jack: So Frankie valet was us four. Then in June, Matt left, Alison came on bass, and I went to guitar. Jake: The rest is the future. Alison: I agree with Jack’s story. Jack: This is now a two and a half-year-old project. Gram: We’re approaching one year with this lineup. I: Do you guys have any personal influences?

I: On your album, Stop Apologizing, I felt there was a bunch of energy, but it was all kept intact and not wild or incredibly noisy. I enjoyed the balance of mellowness and high activity, and its combination sometimes, like in “April” and “Something to Do With A Mouth.” What is the songwriting and composition process like? Jack: Recently, it’s been different. Stop Apologizing was a very different songwriting experience than the album we just recorded. Stop Apologizing was a lot of things that Jake had written that were pretty fleshed out in terms of song structure and melody that we then put our own parts to. The collaborative process was there; Jake and Alison started writing songs back in March or February of last year. I’ve been writing a lot with them, too. But, a lot of that stuff still comes into practice, not any real structure, just a lot of ideas. Gram has an incredible ear for structure, and just thinking, “How is this going to fit together?”, making parts sound like parts. It’s been super collaborative these days, and I think we want it to be more collaborative, but just based on how schedules are we don’t always have three hours to sit down and work on a song. Jake: The turning point for that was before our tour last summer. At the practice before we left for the trip, we worked on one song for about four hours. That was the first time I think it really changed, where as a group we all worked on something. Gram: That song is going to be on the new album. Alison: We all wrote a song together at my lake house, as well. A lot of the times, I’d say that when we are not together, it’s usually that someone has an idea and that’s where it starts, usually with lyrics. I: What is your favorite song to perform live?
Jack: For my guitar playing, I really love J Mascis. I don’t really play guitar like him that much, I just really love him and think about how he would play things, then I play it differently. Because I started playing guitar in this band after Jake, a lot of guitar parts I’ve been writing have been super Jake influenced, also because I write with Jake a lot. Songwriting-wise, Strange Ranger. The Spirit of the Beehive’s guitar is the only thing I have actively tried corporating into playing in the last six months. Gram: As far as influences for drumming, I’d probably say the other local bands, also drummers that I saw play at Co-op basements at Washington University. I try not to think about drums as much these days. If I’m going to take influence for drums, it’s going to be how someone plays guitar or piano, because I don’t trust drummers. Mitski rocks. Jake: For my guitar playing, I like Buck Meek a lot from Big Thief. But my sound is like a Kevin Shields rip-off, which is great. My Bloody Valentine is in there. I was more of a bass player before this band, so a lot of my stuff mostly comes from the Motown bass melodies and arrangements from old soul records. I played jazz, as well. Arrangements and the way song parts work together is important for me. I

try to think about it wholistically--all the parts fitting together--as much as I can for my quarter of [the band]... trying to fit in where I can, but not be too crazy. Although, I do like Big Muff--Big Muff is my biggest influence. Alison: I don’t know if I can say that I have any direct bass influences, I’ve kind of been winging it because I’m new with this. With music in general, if I try to write songs I normally think about female singers that I like, such as Florence and Phoebe Bridgers.
Jack: It so depends on the day for me. Jake: I like “Try Not to Think.” Jack: That’s consistently my favorite. Jake: There’s some really good lyrics Jack wrote. Jack: Jake and I wrote the bones of that song in Tower Grove Park. Gram: I don’t know if I have favorite songs, but I have favorite moments. There’s little, tiny changes that I love in every song. Jack: My favorite one recently has been “Soft Skin.” Jake: That one is super fun to play. You get two tempo changes. There’s a lot of tempo changes these days in our songs. I: I saw that you guys played in my hometown, Belleville, at Balance Coffee & Tea back in the summer. I did not think that place could be used as a music venue until I saw that happened. What was that night like?

Alison: It’s super funny, because Gram wasn’t there. I don’t know if we practiced before the show. It was kind of rough for me. I was thinking, “How do I keep rhythm?!” Jake: As far as our performance went, it was definitely weird, but the show itself was really cool. The venue really worked for that kind of function. Jack: We were leaving for tour the next day, it was kind of last minute. We had a show in Cincinnati the next day. Gram: We left for tour that night; I couldn’t be there because I had to work. Jack: We drove there overnight after we played at Balance. Our friend George from American Poetry Club was playing there, and he said we should also play. Jake: It was on the 4th of July. Jack: We got Imo’s after, and it was really tight. Alison: That was my first Imo’s. Gram: The fireworks were beautiful that night on the road.
I: Since I got a platform to express my love for the STL scene, I’ve always wanted to bring attention to Foam and its current financial crisis, because of how vital Foam is for STL bands and audiences alike. How has Foam impacted you guys?
Gram: Yes... there’s so many good St. Louis bands. Jake: One of my favorites that we have not performed with is Glued. Jack: I really like Yuppy these days. We’ve played with them before, but only as a duo. Gram: There’s so many awesome bands--Details is good--they’re all great. Jack: Little Big Bangs was one of the shows I was most excited for, because they’re so good. They’re just nice kids. Jake: I love Cricket Fish, and that’s a band we will not perform with. We share a drummer. It’s physically impossible to perform with them. Gram can only be in one place at one time. Gram: I don’t like double shows because you only get luck for the first show, maybe the second. You’re like a deflated balloon. It’s difficult to switch headspaces. Being the drummer of those two bands, I don’t want to sound the exact same, and I can’t help but have a shared element. In thirty minutes, it just does not work.
I: Are you guys working on any new projects?
Gram: Positively. Apparently in high school, I said that the dream was to play Foam. Then we made it, but I forgot I had said it. Jake reminded me that my dreams were fulfilled. Jack: It’s really easy to have the mindset of, “Oh, it’s just another Foam show, whatever,” because so many shows are at Foam. But the fact that so many of the DIY shows are at Foam is pretty crazy. It’s that accessible to book shows there. I remember the first time I played was with some friends and we were in our underwear. It was August, and none of our friends were back to school yet. I remember that the curtains behind the stage were open and these two women just thought it was hilarious. They stood outside and laughed for half our set. But that was so cool that Foam offered the opportunity to play there, and every band I: Where has been your favorite place to perform on tour? playing now has played there at some point. It is so important that space exists. It’s really great for booking, too, because that makes my job easier. Jake: I think it’s cool because the folks that work at Foam are amazing. Everyone Jack: My favorite show of the summer tour was Boston, partially because it was shares a common appreciation for music that is not corporate, national, big label nice to see family and friends. I’m from there. Also, we made a lot of money that whatnot. night, tons of people came and we sold a lot of shirts. People were really into it. Gram: There is a very organic air around that place, especially when bands play. Also a lot of kids we met that night were awesome. Jake: Likewise, we’ve seen brand new bands that nobody knows, also big bands. Alison: I liked the Mockbee (in Cincinnati) a lot. Jack: We’re playing with two of our favorite bands there in a month: Strange Jack: Cincinnati’s great; we’ve played in Cincinnati about three times now. Ranger and the Spirit of the Beehive. Alison: Two of the times have been in friends’ basements, which has been a time. Alison: I think of the Spirit of the Beehive as such a legitimate band that it’s It’s fun, but it’s different. amazing. Jake: Foam rocks. Hopefully they can make it out of their financial situation. Alison: We need Foam. I: Do you have any favorite STL bands to perform with?
Gram: We have a new album coming out. It’s done more or less. Jack: Seven of the nine songs were done in January and we recorded the last two a month ago. Mixing is happening, then it will be done. Jake: We are trying to get that out on-Gram: Don’t say any dates. Jack: Sometime in the next five years. Jake: Keep your eyes open, your ears peeled. Jack: If you have seen any of our sets it’s the only songs we have played. Realistically though, the summer. Jake: Or fall at the latest.

Since the day I could scribble with a pencil or a crayon. I have a photo of myself with a Kodak Brownie hanging around my neck when I was nine. I took my camera everywhere. When I was a high school senior I illustrated a student literary book with my drawings. I loved being a student photographer. It gave me the opportunity to get out of class to take photos of other students and activities for the yearbook.

A camera in my hands was like wearing a protective coat of armor. Photography helped me to overcome my shyness, approach other students, especially girls, and develop relationship skills that many students don’t learn until later in life.

May 2019 The Creative Endeavors of Germania Brew Haus by Brooke Peipert
Germania Brew Haus in Alton, IL is something unlike anything in the area. While at a first glance of the name, one might think that this place is just another bar on a main street in America; there is, however, much more to it. You can visit Germania in the morning for coffee and muffins and come back for beer and pretzels for dinner. Offering a plethora of choices, this gem of a place has something for just about everyone. A veteran-owned, family-operated business, it specializes in a rotating menu of German style appetizers, from pretzels the size of one’s own head to protein balls and muffins that are sure to not disappoint. A trained team of baristas whip up delicious things from lattes to Italian sodas. And Germania grinds its own coffee beans from a local coffee company. Patrons can also come back for a happy hour with Germania’s unique self-serve tap of over 12 arrays of beers and ciders from local and non-local microbrews. With the help of a microchip wrist band, customers activate the tap(s) of their choice and simply pay by the ounce, giving them the option of just trying a beer rather than having being forced into to buying an entire beer that you are unsure about liking. If it isn’t the tap system catching patrons’ eyes, it is typically the historical chandelier suspended from the ceiling and the cozy environment that quite literally feels like home. Grab a beer and walk up a flight of stairs to an upper level where hours can be spent enjoying the view of the Mississippi River from their rooftop deck or playing various board games that Germania employees have stacked on the shelves for patrons to play.
Germania has a lot more to offer outside of their delicious menu! In addition to being a coffee shop by day and self-serve tap by night, it’s a great place to find the historical walls flooded with art from local artists. BLPart and Curating manages the art on the walls and hosts anything from opening receptions, charity art raffles, silent auctions, artist talks, and closing ceremonies. (For more info on art events coming to Germania Brew Haus, Like and Follow BLPart and Curating on Facebook.) The art on the walls rotate with each artist’s work hanging 6-8 weeks dependent on each individual show. Currently, the walls are adorned with the newest body of work entitled “The Indelible Spirit”, by Tracey Ippolito. You can be sure to be unexpectedly moved by Tracey’s in-depth paintings based on things like spirituality, mental illness, and what it is that defines the human experience. The show will continue through May 15th, and will close with a silent auction of smaller, unexhibited and even more affordable works by the artist. The artist will be available for a live talk and questions pertaining to her body of work. The closing reception will be on May 4th from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm with live music provided by Joey Ciaramitaro. In addition to featured solo artist events at Germania Brew Haus (hosted by BLPart and Curating), is an event called “Coffee.Shop”. Every third Sunday, some of Alton’s most talented artisans set up to sell their handmade goods for the event. Come shop and support local artists, grab a coffee and embrace this place that roars with a unique charm that only Germania Brew Haus embodies. As a small business, Germania Brew Haus is an advocate for supporting a variety of artistic endeavors in the community, such as ‘The Night Market on Broadway’. The ‘Night Market on Broadway’ is a summer event that takes place in the pocket park between Germania Brew Haus and Jacoby Arts Center every Thursday beginning June 20th at 7:00 pm. Local artisans and vendors come out, live music takes place, and you’ll experience a vibe that will welcome you with open arms to come back again and again. The ‘Night Market on Broadway’ is a family-oriented event, including pets, so you really have no reason to not make it out to support local artists who are so passionate about selling their home-made and handmade goods that they return week after week, season after season. During the market, Germania Brew Haus collaborates by hosting an open mic night, beginning at 7:30 pm. The first open mic night will be on June 20th

and continue every Thursday evening, so grab your guitar and head down to one of the best open mic nights in Alton. Each skeleton is worth 1VP when defeated but undefeated costs 1 heart (1VP) when encountered. If you have no hearts you may not cross over a skeleton without a sword. Items are one time use! All items take 1 inventory slot and if you have empty inventory slots you must pick it up. Use of any item means it is discarded and items may not be discarded without first using them. Eggs may never be discarded. You may cross a space more than once. You may travel diagonally. Dark spaces require the use of one torch to travel through each time, even if already traveled through before. Start at the S and end at the E.

Wall Flower is 2-6 players and requires a different color of writing utensil per number of players. Players begin in opposite corners of the board and the winner is the first player to reach their home base again after making it through the center of the board. The board consists of spaces (white dots) and paths inbetween (flower petals.) Color in a dot in a corner of the board that is your homebase. Players begin with their own 12 “walls” shaped like petals outside of the board. On a player’s turn they MUST do one of two things: Either place one wall anywhere on the board by coloring in a petal pathway and coloring in one of their petals outside the board (until their wall limit is reached.) OR “Move” by coloring in an unoccupied white dot adjacent to where their “pawn” is currently. When a player marks a wall or moves to a new dot both are permanent. A player may not move onto a white dot they or anyone else have already been on (exept for their own home base.) It is illegal to place a wall or color in a dot that would completely block a player from reaching the center of the board or their home base or otherwise eliminate them. When a player reaches the center of the board they may now travel through their own color of walls. Jumping another player’s pawn is allowed. Players may jump pawns that are on a dot adjacent their own. Players MAY jump spaces other players have previously occupied even if they’re not on them. When jumping you may jump through any of the other 5 petal pathways attached to the space the player is / was on to any of the additional 5 white dots surrounding them. A player MAY use jumping to jump around (NOT THROUGH) another player’s walls. Jumping another player who is on the center dot DOES COUNT as a player passing through the center dot. Double, triple jumping, etc. in a single turn is allowed if pawns align to allow it. Players may not jump their own color dots. First player home wins!

2019 Gesso Magazine Collegiate Artist Award
for her Oil on Canvas Painting: For Danna
Michele Hilbing
Michele Hilbing received the 2019 Gesso Magazine Collegiate Artist Award at the Annual Schmidt Art Center Student Art and Design Exhibit on April 25. The award winning piece, entitled “For Danna”, is an oil on canvas painting. Michele provides the following story behind this striking work of art: My friend Danna was diagnosed with a rare form of breast cancer. Before her double mastectomy she went out to California to see her family. While there, her daughter took a picture of her standing on the rocks - bare chested to the ocean making peace with her future. This painting reflects my version of what I saw in the photograph; her power mixing with the forces of nature. I wasn’t sure if I should give her the painting because I didn’t want to take her back in time to such a difficult period in her life. But recently she celebrated the birth of her first grandchild. That gave the painting new meaning to me. Now when I think about that painting, I think of her grandson looking at it and seeing what an amazing and powerful grandmother he has. “I consider myself a bit of a curious creative — during my first years of college at STLCC – Meramec, I decided to study Mass Communications, absolutely falling in love with black and white photography. For the next 20 years, I would find myself dabbling in photography (in all of its forms), in graphic design – earning my Master of Fine Arts Degree in Media Design and in special events coordination, eventually landing the perfect gig here at Third Degree Glass Factory. Here, in this place, I am surrounded by and exposed to the influences I adore the most – amazing art in several forms, my passion for event planning, and amazing creatives of all types. “With this inspiration surrounding me — I feel this is where the journey to creating my life’s work begins — combining my love for photography with the my passion for graphic design, and sharing it with the world. I am looking forward to traveling more with my two sons, Jordan (15) and Andrew (7), so they may enjoy, experience and capture the curiosities of life with me. “Words to live by? Wanderlust – experience it all. And of course my mantra — Positive mind, positive vibe, positive life. Love to all.” This past summer, an opportunity presented itself for Tracey to travel abroad. Her goal has always been to experience the “cracks and crevices of the world,” and in return share the experience with others via her work and passion for photography and graphic design. Last July, Tracey captured some of the amazing “off the beaten path” parts of Rome, Florence, Venice (Venezia) and Murano–a small island off the coast of Venice, known for its long, rich history in glassmaking.
