Like all departments, Pazen said, the job never gets easier. Violent crime paints that picture and Denver, like other large cities, struggles to meet the challenge. Budget shortfalls, retirements, and resignations have left the department an estimated 140 officers below a full complement of 1,600.
His tenure was marked by a pandem ic, bloody and violent clashes with police, and a rising violent crime rate compound ed by a national trend of understaffing. It was a real-time, 21st century troika that confronted Denver and stretched coast to coast.“It’s been a tough couple of years,” Pa zen acknowledged. But the challenges of a new century also inspired new and perhaps overdue methods of policing.
“It’s been the honor of a lifetime.”

Pazen said he will leave his job knowing the department has also made a difference in another area that gets far too little at tention.“I’m proud of our human trafficking team,” he said.

“That was just a suit to try to make sure that the state followed through with its legal duty to actually update these permits and not continue to drag its feet along,” said Jeremy Nichols, a spokesperson for the Guardians. “It’s what we would call a deadline lawsuit, but it’s still very significant because these permits are pretty outdated, and it’s very clear that changes are needed at the refinery.”
