I

s it really true that a rose by any other name would smell as sweet? Maybe not, especially if the rose is a word that has only recently entered the lexicon and, in the process, created an ample amount of pique, confusion, and, for good measure, mystery among sixty million Americans. The word is Latinx. Never heard of it? Then, some quick history.

The term first appeared in the early part of the 21st century. It was as much a clarion call of inclusion and identity as one of separation and distinction. It was also an unmistakable but peaceful wave of a flag carPostal Customer

ried by new and growing voices in a mosaic Latino community.

While there are a few theories as to the word’s origins, it is inarguable that a few groups using the term, if not exclusively then at least more consistently, are younger Latinos and a more vocal and political Latino LGBTQ community. A growing number of Latino and non-Latino academics and professionals have also become allies.

But while the term carries with it an undi-

Signature cocktails at The Reserve include the Barrel Aged Negroni, made from Ironton Olde Alchemist barrel-aged genièvre gin, Ironton amaro liqueur, and sweet vermouth.

Nordic Myth is a perfect winter-into-spring cocktail made with Ironton rye whiskey, Ironton Nordic Gold barrel-aged aquavit, Ironton amaro liqueur, Ironton herbal bitters, and rosemary honey.

Fun fact: The crafthouse is named after Ironton, a former mining town in southwest Colorado, situated on a stretch of the Million Dollar Highway between the high mountain towns of Silverton and Ouray. It’s also named after the 1881 “Ironton Addition” of Denver, which is part of RiNo today.

Su Teatro honra una peregrinación histórica con "Papi, yo y César Chávez"

García, se presenta del 10 al 27 de marzo de 2022. Esta proyección especial coincide también con el 60º aniversario de la fundación del sindicato United Farm Workers (UFW).

"Papi, Me and César Chávez" narra la peregrinación, la histórica marcha de la UFW desde Delano, California, hasta el capitolio estatal en Sacramento. The Laradon Career Center, newly opened in January 2022, is a 132 unit affordable housing development equipped with a career center on the ground floor. Residents and participants can engage in a curriculum of core classes that outline resume building, job search and application, interview preparation, and job placement.

Participants work independently or in a group for various places around Denver including Brewability, Arc Thrift Store, Hilton Denver City Center, and Denver Zoo. The Host Home Program within Laradon works with volunteer households to provide a safe and stable home environment that encourages independence. Erin Bargman, a Denver native who has an intellectual developmental disorder and has appeared on several news channels, has lived with her host family for 11 years. “I was on channel 9 news and channel 4 news, and I was very popular,” she said, laughing.

“I love Laradon,” Bargman said, who lost her grandmother and caretaker in 2011. Bargman now works through the Laradon Employment Program at the Salvation Army and Coors Field.

Workshops within the Career Center implement understanding of professional documents, financial competency, navigating the workspace, and diversity and equity. The center provides a space for individuals to learn on their own and with their peers and team leaders.

McNeill said, “the whole point of what we’re doing is to get them [the participants] out of institutions and equip them in a way that they can live successfully in community settings, with another family and with their own family—and then have the tools and the skills and behaviors to succeed.”

With 15 kids living on campus, the adult employment and living programs, and the preschool, Laradon has created a safe place using a multidisciplinary approach. “These are high need individuals,” McNeill said, “and they deserve to earn the respect of society–and our job here is to equip them so they can participate in home life, community life, social life, work life. That’s our job.”

By supporting children and adults with disabilities, Laradon has gained national recognition as a groundbreaking establishment changing the way diverse communities come together.

ravel ads for tourists state that getting around Denver by light rail can be quick and easy. But for Globeville residents, light rail is neither quick nor easy. The station Mary Lou Egan at 41st and Fox is close to the Sunnyside neighborhood and requires transportation or a mile-long hike to the parking lot. The station at 38th and Blake Street also calls for a car or a long, hazardous trek along an underpass using narrow disintegrating sidewalks. But Globeville was once on the main line of affordable, accessible transportation: The Interurban.

THE DENVER & INTERURBAN RAILROAD

The headline in the Denver Post proclaimed “Beautiful Boulder Is Now Within 55 Minutes of Denver,” and the story that followed described clean, efficient passenger service on low-cost, electric trains. The article was an enthusiastic report of the inaugural run of the Denver & Interurban Railroad on June 23, 1908.

In 1908, Colorado was experiencing phenomenal growth in people, businesses and small communities along the Front Range.

Because roads were primitive and few people owned automobiles, any new method of transportation was received with enthusiasm. The Denver & Interurban was worthy of some excitement, providing service every hour between Denver and Boulder with stops in Globeville, Westminster, Broomfield, and Louisville. During the summer months, the route included the resort of Eldorado Springs. The Denver Post continued, “the electric cars can attain the speed of a mile a minute...and passengers are not annoyed with cinders, smoke and dust.”

The fare was fifty cents.

The route became known as the “Kite Route” because, when seen on a map, it looked like a kite on a string. The line operated from the Denver Tramway’s Interurban Loop at 15th and Arapahoe Streets, one block east of the Central Loop, which made it easy for passengers to transfer from any of the city’s streetcar lines to the Interurban.

From there, it traveled to the 23rd Street viaduct, past the Interurban shops at 36th and Fox and east on 45th Avenue to Washington Street in Globeville.

In 1999, I interviewed Ed Wargin. He was born in 1908 and grew up with the Interurban. Wargin remembered, “You could always tell when they were coming down 45th Avenue. They had a real shrill whistle. We used to put pennies on the track and it would flatten them as it went by.”

The station was a small building at 5125 Washington St., rented from owner John Bohte for $25 a month. Wargin recalled, “We’d buy our tickets at the station. It was a storefront kind of a thing with a big old pot-bellied stove.”

The ticket office was the building on the right, next to the fence.

Globeville was at the edge of the Denver city limits and was the place where the switch was made from the tramway connector to the overhead electrification system, the pantograph. It was also the scene of the line’s only major wreck, when two cars collided on Labor Day 1920, killing 12 and injuring 214. The holiday may have contributed to the disaster; the cars were overloaded and the motormen called in to handle the extra crowds were inexperienced. The wreck was front page news for weeks and made an indelible impression on young Wargin.

“On Labor Day weekend, my dad and I had gone fishing at a lake, just about where the Westminster shopping center is now, and we rode the Interurban to get there. Dad said they weren’t biting so we might as well go.

“We started walking toward 80th Avenue and dad kept saying, ‘Hurry, hurry, I can hear him coming.’ But I couldn’t walk as fast as he could and we missed the train. We saw him go by. So we waited for the next car at Westminster and this lady came over and said, ‘Are you waiting for the Interurban?

Well, there won’t be any because there was a big wreck at Globeville,’” Wargin recalled.

“It was a terrible, terrible wreck. Two cars had crashed into each other and it looked like they were all made of toothpicks—they were made of wood in those days. Anyone who had a car took people to the hospital.

dow, they will be losing one activity field but will gain a new one above the underground section of the interstate when it’s done. A dual language school, they are piloting some programs that will be standard in other schools next year.

While some of the academic programs are new, the school has a long history. Principal Vanessa Trussell said she knows families who have had three generations come through the halls.

Some of the staff has been at the school for two decades. Trusell is in her third year as principal herself, serving as the assistant prior. Assistant Principal Marc Rodriguez, serving his first year in the role, said he “quickly realized how deeply people are connected [to the school].”

Olson, who worked as a teacher before joining the board, has a former student now teaching at Swansea herself. Olson commented more than once how she misses being in the classroom (board members are not allowed to work for the district, though she occasionally gets to lecture). For Laurvick, it was a second recent visit, having stopped in with DPS’ new superintendent Alex Marrero when showing him around the neighborhood.

hile COVID-19 kept students remote for a while, it kept visitors to schools out much longer, including education officials. With restrictions loosening, district and state education officials are starting to return to school visits themselves. This month, Colorado State Board of Education member Dr. Lisa Escárcega, who represents Denver, visited Swansea Elementary along with Denver Public Schools Board of Education District 3 member Dr. Carrie Olson and District 5 member Rev. Brad Laurvick, who represents the G.E.S. community.

For Escárcega, it was a chance to have more informal interactions with school leaders. Often a State Board of Education member only talks with individual schools if they are coming before the board, possibly because there is a problem, which limits the sort of interaction they can have.

“I was impressed by the commitment of the school to its students and community as well as the community being committed to the school.

Those relationships are what set up a school for success,” Escárcega told The G.E.S. Gazette afterward.

Swansea Elementary is looking at a number of changes. It’s both a familiar presence in the community and innovative in its programming.

Transfiguration Church in Globeville: An Oral History N

orth and West Denver are blessed with many historic churches and synagogues which help build strong and vigorous communities, Dennis Gallagher knitting together an important fabric that makes neighborhood stories memorable and worthy of remembering.

Today, we call these stories diversity. It's my story too.

I first visited Holy Transfiguration of Christ Orthodox Church in Globeville in high school when my friend Ivan Ambrose invited me. Ivan also invited me to take a course in Slovenian taught by Fr. Leopold AVID SABADOSMihalich, pastor of Holy Rosary Slovenian Catholic Church on West 47th Avenue and esson Sherman Street. Fr. Mihalich, from Mostar in the old Yugoslavia, literally walked and a una bicycled out of Europe to get away from the Nazis. He finally got to America and was assigned to be pastor of Holy Rosary. Ivan and I met when we worked as stage hands at the historic and still solid-as-a-rock Colosseum, a great first job, but that's another story. Fr. Mihalich always commented on how happy he was to see a non-Slavic name on his Slovenian class roster. I thought "Gallagher" fit in just fine in a spirit of early ecumenical diversity and transparency.

Studying Slovenian got me interested in Slavic languages, so when I started attending Regis, I signed up first for Latin and Greek, my minors, and then a Russian class. And when Ivan invited me to the post Roman midnight Russian Easter at Transfiguration, the Easter celebrated by the Orthodox Christians, I jumped at the chance. In those days much of the service was in Slavonic and Russian, and the chanting celebratory and uplifting. Today, services are all in English.

The congregants processioned around the church three times with candles marking the time Jesus spent in the tomb before rising.

In pre-Covid days, after services the church members would retire to the church hall for a sumptuous roasted lamb dinner. It was memorable, and from that day on I was hooked on the Eastern Church and its liturgy.

Transfiguration Church’s start was not without controversy and contention. You see, dear reader, it was originally a Greek Catholic Uniate church, under Roman jurisdiction but following all the rules of Orthodox churches, under a patriarch appointed by the Pope. The Uniates were protected from persecution in Poland because these Christians were under Rome and had the Pope's approval and protection. So when Fr. Nicholas Saragelli, from Carpathia, shows up to be the pastor of Transfiguration, the Roman Bishop Nicholas C. Matz had an episcopal tantrum. Fr. Saragelli had a wife and kids, as is allowed in the Eastern rites. It was rumored Matz did not like the Slavs any more than he liked the Irish priests in his diocese and was quoted as saying, "no priest

in my diocese will have a wife and children."

He excommunicated the Eastern rite Greek Catholic priest, Fr. Saragelli. Let me remind you, there are 23 rites in the Roman church and only one, the Latin Rite which is also the biggest, does not allow for a married clergy.

Bishop Matz told the parishioners of Transfiguration they can just switch to the Latin rite and abandon their Slavonic rite.

The people had a big meeting and sent a telegram to Russian Orthodox Archbishop Tikhon of San Francisco asking they receive the parish into the Orthodox faith. Some time later, Archbishop Tikhon came to Denver and received the church into Orthodoxy. At the opening ceremony, Archbishop Tikhon thanked Bishop Matz "for giving Colorado its only Orthodox Church." Remember, this is in the early 1900s here in Denver.

Tikhon built the altar which is now enclosed in the altar table behind the inspiring iconostasis, the icon wall in front of the altar. Can you imagine, an archbishop actually using a saw and hammer and wooden pegs to literally build an altar table? I can't recall it. Tikhon was called back to Moscow to become the Patriarch of Moscow during the communist revolution and was eventually martyred. He is now a saint. When Tikhon told Tsar Nicholas II, the last of the Romanov tsars, about Transfiguration becoming Orthodox, Nicholas sent three specially cast Russian bells which still welcome church celebrations today. Tamara Lagaloff of Paris and Theodore Jurevich did the mystical wall and ceiling icons for the church. The church has its own iconographer, Rafael, who paints in acrylics.

After the Russian Revolution, the Soviet communist government did everything they could to disrupt the Orthodox churches across the United States. They tried to sell off churches and icons to fund their atheistic government programs. They sent over fake priests to disrupt the churches. It took years for Transfiguration to recover. But now, under the expert leadership of Fr. David Thatcher and his wife, Transfiguration welcomes anyone interested in attending their services at 8:30 a.m. on Sundays. The church and its members are very welcoming.

Los uniatas estaban protegidos de la persecución en Polonia porque estos cristianos estaban bajo Roma y tenían la aprobación y protección del Papa. Por eso, cuando el P. Nicholas Saragelli, procedente de los Cárpatos, se presentó como párroco de la Transfiguración, el obispo romano Nicholas C. Matz tuvo una pataleta episcopal. luted message of clarity, even independence, by those who’ve adopted it, Latinx still has a ways to go before it catches on in a significant, mainstream way with the nation’s sixty-million-plus Latinos. Currently, the term is more boutique than big box and still searching to find its sweet spot in the political and social vernacular.

“I have never warmed up to it,” said San Antonio Express News columnist, Elaine Ayala. Her newspaper, said the veteran journalist, has no official policy on the term and Ayala uses it only sparingly. “I prefer to use the labels (people) use for themselves.” In San Antonio, she said that is usually Latino and Latina or Mexican American.

The National Association of Hispanic Journalists, a body of more than 2,300 reporters, writers, editors, and other news professionals, while acknowledging Latinx as new coinage, has also not taken a position on the term. “We’re flexible in its use,” said NAHJ President Nora López.

“We think what’s most important is to use the term if it’s the preferred term of the person you are interviewing… that’s always the best course.”

The classroom, however, is a whole different story, said Adriana Nieto, Associate Professor and Chair of the Chicano-Chicana Studies Program at Denver’s Metropolitan State University. Not surprisingly, Nieto’s classrooms are populated with a mostly younger set, some of whom identify as LGBTQ. “When we teach our classes,” said Nieto, “one of the first things we talk about is nomenclature.” It’s important, she said, to make sure students understand “the different contexts where those terms have been used.” Terms of identification change over time, said Nieto.

Indeed, there is a transitory nature connected with words once acceptable and used in identifying ethnic groups. The most obvious examples are terms used during the last century to identify African Americans, either on official forms or even in normal conversation. They were terms also used by African Americans. A quick scan of old movies, television shows–including news broadcasts–or an examination of not-that-long-ago newspapers and magazines documents the usage of words like “negro” or “colored.” The words were not only considered normal and acceptable, but used as a matter of course and considered inoffensive in those days. Today, use of either is considered inappropriate or simply ignorant at best.

But if there is any realistic hope that Latinx will one day become the dominant identifier for the nation’s fastest growing ethnic population, it has some catching up to do. In a 2020 poll, the Pew Research Center found that less than one-quarter of U.S. Latinos were even aware of the word and only 3% of Latinos used it.

Anna Gonzalez-Barrera, Senior Researcher at the Pew Research Center, confirmed the poll findings in a recent conversation. “Very few people even knew about it,” she said.

Where it has found its niche, said Gonzalez-Barrera, is among younger people. “They are more likely to use it, also some Latinas.”

Others comfortable with Latinx, the polling showed, are people with more education, “people who have attended college.”

With Latinx lagging as a self-identifier, the poll asked which term Latinos are most comfortable with and prefer. Gonzalez-Barrera answered that it was overwhelmingly Latino

It may not happen soon, but more gender-neutral words are waiting in the wings to take their place alongside or, one day, supplant Latino and Hispanic. Latin@ and Latine are two such examples. Other terms, both carrying a torch for Mexican roots, are Chicanx, 21st century homage to Chicano and Xicanx, a nod to pre-Columbia Mexico where ‘x’ appears in scores of words. Xoxocotl, for example, means ‘sour.’ Xochitla, meaning garden or orchard, is another.

Latino baby boomers, key movers in the

social renaissance of the ‘60s and ‘70s, do not seem keen on this new moniker. Rudy Cuellar, a self-described “old school Chicano” is a northern California artist and long-standing member of a group that calls itself the “Rural Chicano Air Force.” Cueller sums up succinctly his feelings about Latinx: “Here we go again,” he said from his home in a recent phone interview. “The schools are ripe for that (expletive).”

Still respectful of people who choose new words for self-identification, the “old school” artist says he has two granddaughters “who have gone that way” and identify as Latinx.

Nonetheless, he remains firmly in the camp of Hispanic, a word he says is perfectly simple, clear, and descriptive. Also, said Cuellar, “Businesses prefer Hispanic because it’s very inclusive.”

Though Cuellar sees no future with him for the 21st century descriptor, Latinx, he concedes its introduction is simply language evolution. “It’s not a fight to fight…it’s a pendulum. It goes to the left and swings back. It’s just constant.”

Latinx may be the “Rodney Dangerfield” of ethnic appellations. While it may be growing in popularity among some groups, it is failing miserably for full-scale acceptance among Latino or Hispanic as a term of identification.

En el aula, sin embargo, es una historia totalmente diferente, dijo Adriana Nieto, profesora asociada y presidenta del Programa de Estudios Chicanos-Chicanas de la Universidad Estatal Metropolitana de Denver.

Pero si hay alguna esperanza realista de que Latinx se convierta algún día en el identificador dominante para la población étnica de más rápido crecimiento de la nación, tiene que ponerse al día. En una encuesta realizada en 2020, el Centro de Investigación Pew descubrió que menos de las uno cuarta partes de los latinos de EE.UU. conocían la palabra y sólo el 3% de los latinos la utilizaban.

Anna González-Barrera, investigadora principal del Pew Research Center, confirmó los resultados de la encuesta en una conversación reciente. "Muy poca gente lo conocía", dijo. Donde sí ha encontrado su nicho, dijo González-Barrera, es entre los más jóvenes. "Son más propensos a usarla, también algunas latinas". Otros que se sienten cómodos con Latinx, según la encuesta, son personas con más estudios, "gente que ha ido a la universidad".

Latin@ y Latine son dos ejemplos. Otros términos, ambos portadores de la antorcha de las raíces mexicanas, son Chicanx, homenaje del siglo XXI a Chicano y Xicanx, un guiño al México precolombino donde la "x" aparece en decenas de palabras. Xoxocotl, por ejemplo, significa 'agrio'. Xochitla, que significa jardín o huerto, es otra.

A los latinos del baby boom, protagonistas del renacimiento social de los años 60 y 70, no parece gustarles este nuevo apelativo. Aunque Cuéllar no le ve futuro al descriptor del siglo XXI, Latinx, admite que su introducción es simplemente una evolución del lenguaje. "No es una lucha por luchar... es un péndulo. Va hacia la izquierda y vuelve a oscilar. Es algo constante".

Latinx puede ser el "Rodney Dangerfield" de las denominaciones étnicas. Aunque puede estar creciendo en popularidad entre algunos grupos, está fracasando estrepitosamente en la aceptación a gran escala entre los latinos o hispanos como término de identificación.

sing voter-approved bond funds, the Swansea Recreation Center will be getting an upgrade. The aging outdoor pool is in need of replacement, and rather than install a new summer-only outdoor pool, Denver Parks and Recreation will be building a year-round indoor pool instead.

City officials said the decision was made in part because the community doesn’t currently have any indoor pool options, with the

closest being nearly four miles away.

The pool is currently in the design phase, with construction expected to begin in early 2024 and be completed in 2025.

As part of the planning process, the city is inviting the community to a meeting on Thursday, April 7 from 5:30-7 p.m. at the Swansea Recreation Center to share feedback with city officials as they begin to plan the redesign.
