Stock Show, CSU Spur Into Action

T

he stock show is back next month and Colorado State University is opening the first building of their new public-facing campus in Denver. For anyone who hasn’t been to the National Western campus lately, it’s in large part unrecognizable from only a few years ago: the stockyards have moved, new modern buildings tower above the 100-year old original structures, and even the railroad lines have moved, allowing visitors access to the river.

The stock show has an estimated $120 million economic impact on the Denver metro area, including money spent at local businesses such as hotels and restaurants.

“We’re 100% on,” explained Paul Andrews, President and CEO of National Western Stock Show, adding that the show “will change how America markets livestock.” Andrew’s excitement for the upgrades to the facilities is hard to overstate, though anyone who hasn’t spent time around stock shows may need a more background. For the first time, the livestock pens will have power as well as both hot and cold water. Previously, livestock owners had to haul in generators: preparing livestock for show means not only washing the animals, grooming involves blow dryers and any number of other small powered devices. As the long days start early, it also means a lot of coffee pots plugged in. While that may sound like a basic improvement, the upgrades in the new livestock pens are pretty unique, he explains those amenities aren’t available at other stock show sites: no one (human or the animal) wants to be washing a bull in cold water when it’s below freezing outside.

Visitors to this year’s show can expect all the popular events: three nights of bull riding, 14 of the most elite horse shows, the pro rodeo, mutton bustin’, and, of course, vendors selling everything from belt buckles, hats, and saddles to outdoor heaters for your ranch (or in Denver, more likely your back patio or roof deck). Andrews also stressed the multicultural aspect of Denver’s stock show, which has both a Hispanic Heritage Day including a Mexican Rodeo, and the MLK Jr. African American Heritage Rodeo.

The 97-minute documentary chronicles the journey of various women of color vying for positions within local government, including an RTD district director position, several Denver City Council posts, and a bid for Denver mayor.

Award-Winning Food Truck Turned Popular Family-Run Mexican Restaurant

f you decide to get a firsthand look at the progress being made on the four-acre park being built over I-70 in Elyria-Swansea, be sure to also check out the new mural at 46th Avenue and Josephine. As it turns out, restaurant ownership is in their blood. Ramon’s father owned a restaurant when Ramon was a teenager, and other family members have also run restaurants. In fact, many of the dishes on Tacos el Huequito’s menu come from Ramon’s parents, including the barbacoa (shredded beef), his mother’s specialty.

“Our menu is filled with family recipes,” says Ramon. “The way we see it, we’re inviting people into our home to enjoy the food we know and love. We only make homemade dishes that we would serve to our own family and that meet their expectations and high standards.”

Tacos el Huequito is especially known for their barbacoa, their al pastor (marinated pork with pineapple), and all of their street tacos. The menu includes burritos, tortas, Mexican hamburgers, enchiladas, chile rellenos, flautas, quesadillas, and nachos. Menu highlights include chili cheese fries, all-day breakfast (breakfast burritos, huevos rancheros, steak and eggs, huevos a la mexicana, and chilaquiles), and homemade salsas ranging from pico de gallo and tomatillo to spicy chile de árbol.

The menu also includes churros and sopapillas, along with a couple salad choices for guests looking for lighter fare. Everything is made fresh, even the chips.

Según sus muchos fans de cerca y de lejos, la taquería sirve una de las mejores comidas callejeras mexicanas auténticas de Denver.

Los propietarios de Tacos El Huequito, Ramón Aguirre y Lorena Álvarez, han construido su taquería familiar como un trabajo de amor. Comenzaron con una parrilla de comida en un remolque en el 2015 y pronto se trasladaron a un camión de comida más grande. Su food truck se hizo tan popular que en septiembre de 2018 abrieron su restaurante.

Una cosa que ha resultado ser un reto a veces: la ubicación del restaurante. Las obras de construcción del Proyecto Central 70 han creado su cuota de dificultades para muchos negocios de los alrededores. In The Air About Our Air? The SJEQ Project Aims To Change That

I

n today’s uber-connected, lightning-speed world, there’s some information that should be made public, especially if it involves one’s environment and health.

Through funding provided by the 70 yearold National Science Foundation, and led by CU Boulder’s Environmental Engineering and Computer Science departments, CU Denver’s Social Science department, as well as some PhD candidates and community members, the SJEQ (Social Justice and Environmental Quality) Project aims to understand and address the disruption caused by the Central 70 highway reconstruction project and related neighborhood redevelopment. For decades, the G.E.S. and Cole neighborhoods have dealt with an enormous amount of dust and pollution from a myriad of projects, starting with the erection of I-25 and I-70 in the 1950s and 60s. However, these construction projects, including the current transportation and venue/housing rebuilds, are not the only causes of higher levels of fine particulates and pollution, especially indoors.

A spokesperson for this project, Marisa Westbrook, MPH, a PhD candidate in Health and Behavioral Sciences at CU Denver, found her communal passion years ago through her interest in various neighborhoods and community member’s health and overall well-being.

Westbrook has been part of the research team since this past January. For the past year, she has been out in the communities trying to build relationships, build trust, and most importantly, learning more about people’s experiences. “We want residents of the G.E.S. and Cole communities to understand that we’re not just here to collect this data and take it away from communities, but rather our goal is to collect this information and [partner] with the neighborhoods so that the communities have access to infor-

mation they need to use to advocate for what we’re really talking about here–having a cleaner environment and developments that happen according to the desires of its residents.”

Initially, the focus group segment of the SJEQ Project, consisting of 32 neighbors from G.E.S. and Cole, yielded some worrisome findings.

Residents’ primary concerns regarding construction and pollution included traffic patterns/lights and road closures which prevented them from getting to work, constant noise, and yes, air quality and air pollution. Because of these concerns, residents reported having to change multiple facets of their lives, such as leaving early to allow for more time for traffic and detours, staying home more often, keeping windows closed, and allowing children to play outside less often. Almost unbelievably, and based on the results of wearable air monitor readings, the inside measurements were actually worse than those readings taken outside.

It’s these inside measurements of air quality that Rey Gallegos, a fourth-generation Globeville/Sunnyside resident and community leader/ advocate is concerned with, but is especially excited about bringing to the community’s attention. “The thing that I’m really looking forward to is seeing people actually realize that our indoor air quality is actually what’s really killing us. Outdoors it’s definitely not the best here, but I had always been under the impression that our poor air quality is because of construction companies and I-70 employees.” Gallegos continued, “once you seal yourself in this little box, in your house, with all of the pollutants that have been coming in all day, and there’s no proper filtration in your home, there’s not proper air ventilation, you’re basically in a coffin, that’s really what it is.”

Enter the SJEQ project and the PurEmotion

app. PurEmotion is a smartphone application that has been developed with community feedback in order to assess impacts and outcomes of this construction and pollution on a daily basis.

Participants go about their daily lives wearing a lanyard with a device that is smaller than a cell phone. The device collects ambient air, downloads the data to an app, and shows individual real-time measurements such as VOC levels and particulate matter, high levels of which can be detrimental to one’s health. If the app records a certain level, it will warn the user that they '“may experience some levels of lung irritation and coughing.” The great thing about having these warnings, Gallegos mentions, is that “you have some control of your environment, like, oh man, maybe I should open a window... this project will really help people to get to know their own environment and be able to rectify their own air quality.”

While the PurEmotion’s app data is received and processed, further mitigation efforts will also begin, including workshops where families can make box-fan filters. Families that participate in the study may have the opportunity to have stovetop hoods installed in their homes as well as other types of air cleaners.

Westbrook stated there are two main elements in the next portion of the project, which includes 200 participants from the GES and Cole neighborhoods. Using the PurEmotion app, or through a physical workbook should the participant not have a smartphone, parties will provide a daily report on how they’re feeling and whatever issues they may have encountered throughout the day that appear to be related to pollution and construction. The participants will also have to answer a very brief daily questionnaire asking them how they feel and what they think about the air quality. The second

element involves a smaller group carrying their own small air sensors that will trap the air wherever they’re at, inside or outside.

Success of this project means a few things to both Gallegos and Westbrook. Westbrook explained that, “from the research side, our goal is to make change, to actually make an impact and not just have this research sitting on the desk, a bookshelf. Our goal is to create data that not only residents can use to make more empowered decisions, to also have more information available about how to make these decisions related to the air around them, but also so that information can be publicly shared and used to advocate for things that matter within the community.”

For Gallegos, this project truly hits home.

“This is a food desert, there are so many aspects, in this community... the cards are stacked against us, so anytime you can give your own neighbor or friends or family the ability to make better decisions, especially when it comes to health, whether mentally or physically, it’s always better to have that power to create change in a positive way... I just don’t want people to have as many breathing problems as we did.

Our kids–that’s what’s most important. My vision is to see people have an actual improvement in how they feel, because honestly, if you feel better about your environment, you feel better about a lot of other things instead of being at home being sickly, not being able to go outside and play or go run because you have all of these issues. This is about providing opportunities for our neighborhoods, and that’s ultimately the most important thing.”

El proyecto SJEQ y la aplicación PurEmotion.

PurEmotion es una aplicación para teléfonos inteligentes que se ha desarrollado con los comentarios de la comunidad para evaluar el impacto y los resultados de esta construcción y la contaminación a diario. Los participantes hacen su vida cotidiana llevando un cordón con un dispositivo más pequeño que un teléfono móvil. El dispositivo recoge el aire ambiente, descarga los datos en una aplicación y muestra las mediciones individuales en tiempo real, como los niveles de COV y las partículas, cuyos altos niveles pueden ser perjudiciales para la salud. Si la app registra un determinado nivel, advertirá al usuario de que ''puede experimentar algunos niveles de irritación pulmonar y tos". Lo bueno de tener estas advertencias, menciona Gallegos, es que "tienes cierto control de tu entorno, como, oh hombre, tal vez debería abrir una ventana... este proyecto realmente ayudará a la gente a conocer su propio entorno y ser capaz de rectificar su propia calidad del aire".

Mientras se reciben y procesan los datos de la app de PurEmotion, también se iniciarán otros esfuerzos de mitigación, como talleres en los que las familias podrán fabricar filtros de caja. Las familias que participen en el estudio podrán tener la oportunidad de que se les instalen campanas extractoras en sus hogares, así como otros tipos de limpiadores de aire.

Westbrook declaró que hay dos elementos principales en la siguiente parte del proyecto, que incluye 200 participantes de los vecindarios GES y Cole. Para Gallegos, este proyecto es realmente un éxito. "Este es un desierto de alimentos, hay tantos aspectos, en esta comunidad... las cartas están en nuestra contra, así que cada vez que puedes dar a tu propio vecino o amigos o familiares la capacidad de tomar mejores decisiones, especialmente cuando se trata de la salud, ya sea mental o físicamente, siempre es mejor tener ese poder para crear un cambio de una manera positiva... Simplemente no quiero que la gente tenga tantos problemas respiratorios como nosotros. Nuestros hijos, eso es lo más importante. Mi visión es ver que la gente tenga una mejora real en cómo se siente, porque honestamente, si te sientes mejor con tu entorno, te sientes mejor con muchas otras cosas en lugar de estar en casa enfermo, sin poder salir a jugar o a correr porque tienes todos estos problemas.

Most of the time, taking this route is a shortcut to Globeville, but for the last six months, traffic has been stopped for 20 minutes at a time for construction work. I used the delay to remember the woman whose name is on the sign and who fought for the neighborhood she loved.

Sarah Wolf had deep roots in Globeville.

With a faraway look in her eyes, she’d say, “I was born in this house. My dad [John Wolf] worked for the Globe Smelter for a dollar a day, using a wheelbarrow to move ore around. He worked nights, and during the day he built this house. As soon as he saved a little money, he sent for other family members from the old country.

“When the family was in Russia, they had no say about their lives and had to answer to the czar. In this country, my dad, a poor immigrant, was elected a trustee of the town of Globeville. He really liked having a say in making his town a good place to live.”

Wolf inherited her father’s pride in his community and his talent for organizing and motivating people. In 1948, she used these skills to fight the elimination of the west side of Globeville by the construction of the Valley Highway (I-25). During the 1960s, she battled the building of I-70 through the heart of the community.

“We held meetings at St. Jacob’s Hall, and at churches; we hired lawyers and we fought the city. When it’s your home, you have to stand up.” But the decision to route the freeways through Globeville had been made long ago. When construction began, many long-time residents moved away.

Not Sarah Wolf.

In the 1970s, the Colorado Department of Highways announced plans to modify I-25, which included eliminating access to the neighborhood at 51st Avenue. Without a challenge to the proposal, the quality of life in Globeville would be dealt another blow. Ambulances and emergency vehicles would have to enter the neighborhood at 58th Avenue, increasing response time for emergencies. Semi trucks would be forced to drive through residential streets to get to nearby industries.

Wolf ’s voice rose. “Neighbors went door to door gathering signatures on petitions.

People wrote letters, attended city council meetings and made phone calls to government officials. I persuaded the presidents of Noble Sysco (Fritz Knoebel) and Anheuser Busch (Henry Honack) to write letters, and I got Councilman Sal Carpio and State Representative Ted Bendelow involved.”

The organized outcry from citizens, business leaders and politicians paid off. A bridge that connected the Globeville neighborhood to the outside world was built at the 48th AvFOLLOWING SAFE COVID PROTOCOL

enue and Pecos Street interchange and dedicated on August 30, 1978. Shortly afterward, Wolf ’s neighbors petitioned the city to have the bridge named after her. (It’s customary to wait five years after someone dies for that honor). But in 1988, Mayor Federico Peña granted Globeville citizens their wish.

The signs that read “Sarah’s Bridge” represent much of what Sarah believed: that in America, anyone can make a difference, that persistence can prevail, and that city government can be held accountable to all its citizens.

The new permit will enhance protections of the river that have previously been in violation, which means Suncor should not be able to pour this toxic water into the river without cleaning it up first. In October, GreenLatinos along with a more than a dozen community organizations and Council Member Candi CdeBaca filed a petition for hearing at the Water Quality Control Commission (WQCC) to revisit not upgrading protections in accord with their own rules and ensure that waterways in North Denver, including Clear Creek and the South Platte River, have the same protections as other water bodies in Colorado. The petition asks the WQCC’s to revisit a 2020 decision that downgraded portions of the South Platte River and Clear Creek as “use protected” under the State’s antidegradation rules. Use-protected means that water only has to be clean enough to protect the existing uses of that water. We are concerned that clean up efforts that could be made to improve the waters, like making them better quality for fishing or swimming, won’t necessarily be recognized by Colorado regulations. This is an environmental justice issue at its core, our communities and our part of the river deserve to have the same protections as other rivers in Colorado, and this means we shouldn’t be prioritizing the current industries that are using and polluting it. This petition is a first for communities like ours, and we are committed to using every tool available for us to reduce the overall cumulative pollution in North Denver. At the December meeting we expect a decision on whether they will accept our petition and if they do it means next year we will have more work to do to ensure more protections for our community.

La planta de gas Cherokee de Xcel Energy, con su infame chimenea de ventilación con rayas naranjas, se puede ver desde el patio delantero de mi madre. Community groups and leaders also spoke in support of Fox Park’s affordable rental housing onsite. Often setting aside a certain percentage of units for individuals and families making less than the area median income (AMI) is part of a negotiation to get higher density zoning, but the property was already zoned for higher density. Manuel Jiménez explained 7% of all units (roughly 200-250) will be reserved for residents under 80% of AMI, with 25% of those for people under 60% AMI. The developers will also pay 125% of the standard linkage fee, a development fee that helps fund affordable housing.

The one hurdle for the Fox Park developers was cleared at the end of November, when Denver City Council, following a presentation and recommendation from the Denver Urban Renewal Authority (DURA), voted to blight the area and allow Tax Increment Financing (TIF). The move makes large projects of this type easier by using future sales tax to reimburse a developer for specific project costs relative to environmental remediation and infrastructure as determined by the urban renewal authority. During the public hearing, which had seven local community speakers in

While several council members raised concerns about the TIF, the vote ultimately passed with only one dissenting vote–Councilwoman Candi CdeBaca, who represents the area. During her remarks, CdeBaca twice noted that her vote was not against the developers, who she praised for their community commitments, but rather against the process available to them. District 1 Councilwoman Amanda P. Sandoval, who represents adjacent communities to the west, said that while she was a council aide in District 9 she watched four previous developers start to work on the site and never engage the community. She acknowledged the outreach Carredano and Jiménez had done in neighborhoods she represents as well. Councilwoman At-Large Debbie Ortega noted that a similar TIF process was done to redevelop Stapleton (now Central Park) after the airport closed.

The area is called Fox Island because of its limited access points, though the city is looking at multiple options to connect the area to the West and North, as well as infrastructure improvements East and South.

Jocelyn Hittle, Assistant Vice Chancellor for the Spur Campus and Special Projects, talked with The G.E.S. Gazette to explain more about how the campus is open to the public. Hittle said some operating theaters are glass walled with audio setups, so visitors and students can not only watch but talk with techs and doctors who wear microphones during procedures.

Visitors and aspiring veterinarians alike may find the equine therapy programs of interest, including submerged horse treadmills. On the more mundane side is a spaying and neutering clinic for household animals.

CSU is especially excited to be working with grade school students and plan on frequent field trips. Hittle said they are offering “experiences tailored to different grade levels over time” with an emphasis on 4th through 6th graders but noting students who are interested in veterinary fields could also return as high schoolers for an internship. Many of the exhibits are also fully bilingual in English and Spanish.

Hittle also stressed their community engagement, including vaccine and animal wellness clinics for residents of the community. CSU has been working with Focus Points Family Resource Center, the Dumb Friends League, and others. They also have a scholarship for students from the 80216 zip code. This year, four students will be receiving $10,000 scholarships if they choose to attend any CSU campus.

Spur is hosting three kickoff events, including a sneak peek for G.E.S. residents on Jan. 6, a ribbon cutting on Jan. 7, and the family friends grand opening on Jan. 15. For more information on Spur, including the events, visit csuspur.org.

CAMPUS CHANGES

New stockyards and the Spur campus aren’t the only changes at National Western this year, though. The office of the National Western Center oversees the portions of campus that are currently under construction. Between the Center and CSU, 750 - 800 workers have been onsite some days making improvements.

Exposed wastewater pipes, formerly both an eyesore and at times offensive to the nose, have

been buried to give visitors access to the river. They will also be used to generate heat as part of National Western’s commitment to sustainability. Even the rail lines have been moved, which opens up the middle of the campus. Other upcoming (but not yet finished) changes include a bridge at 52nd Ave. across the river and additional walkways connecting to nearby communities. Tykus Holloway, the Executive Director of the Mayor’s Office of The National Western Center, summed it up. “What we’ve been focused on since 2018 is a lot of things you use, but you don’t see.”

While the stock show has some ticketed events, the vendor marketplace and many other events are free, as is accessing the campus as a whole. The Spur campus also features free options for the community.

unique barriers women of color face while running for office in “one of the fastest gentrifying cities in the nation.” Most talked about is the inaccessibility of capital, capital that appears to be readily available for white candidates. This reality makes it all the more impressive when Lisa Calderón, featured in the film as a mayoral candidate seeking to become the first female mayor in Denver’s 160-plus-year history, comes in third place despite running a campaign with a mere fraction of the money her opponents and the incumbent had.

Perhaps most surprising to viewers is that the focus of the film (and of the candidates themselves) is not on election outcomes. The filmmakers and candidates alike seem to be concerned with something far more important: building community.

City Councilwoman Candi CdeBaca was careful to explain that her personal success was not the end goal. “The real end goal is building community power. Building knowledge that will carry people far beyond my race.”

CdeBaca’s win was historic: she is the first LGBTQ Latina and the first Democratic Socialist to serve on the Denver City Council. In the film, staffers can be seen telling CdeBaca she won her runoff election, and the electricity of the moment is palpable, even years later. On the night of the runoff election, CdeBaca relayed she felt “a sense of peace and a newer sense of appreciation for my community” as she went door-to-door canvassing right up until 7 p.m.

CdeBaca elaborated on how she does not believe “just anybody” should run for office. She stated, “I think that people who run should be rooted in their community to a degree that it is a community decision to run because you cannot cross that finish line alone.” In the documentary, she talks about how it was actually her niece who planted the seed that convinced her to run for office with a simple question of, “tía, if you’re so mad, why don’t you just run?”

As a first generation high school graduate and first generation college graduate, CdeBaca is no stranger to the difficulty and discomfort that accompanies feeling like a lone voice. When asked if she has advice for young women of color in Denver, CdeBaca responded, “We are the new American majority and I think that with that, comes responsibility… knowing that these cities belong to us, these states belong to us, this country belongs to us, is critical because when something belongs to you, you take better care of it.” CdeBaca added, “I don't think we've ever been socialized to believe that this belongs to us.”

Although CdeBaca is beyond what she

describes as “a slice of my life that was probably one of the most difficult slices of life that I’ve lived through,” her fight is not over yet. On the City Council, CdeBaca remains a staunch advocate for the most vulnerable members in her community: individuals experiencing homlessness, poverty, and incarceration.

Within her first two years in office, CdeBaca achieved a number of victories, including securing one million dollars in legal defense for Denver residents facing eviction and co-authoring The Support Team Assisted Response (STAR) Program’s expansion funding to send mental health experts (instead of police officers) to 911 calls related to mental health crises.

Currently, CdeBaca and her team are encouraging Denverites to get involved in the redistricting process for city council districts in hopes of “turning gerrymandering on its head.” New tools allow the public to generate their own redistricting maps and CdeBaca’s office has been running workshops across District 9 to teach people how to use these tools–and their voice–throughout this process.

CdeBaca añadió: "Creo que nunca hemos sido socializados para creer que esto nos pertenece".

Aunque CdeBaca ha superado lo que describe como "un tramo de mi vida que probablemente ha sido uno de los más difíciles que he vivido", su lucha aún no ha terminado. En el Consejo Municipal, CdeBaca sigue siendo una firme defensora de los miembros más vulnerables de su comunidad: las personas que sufren la falta de hogar, la pobreza y el encarcelamiento.

National Western Leaders Líderes de National and Community Discuss Western y la comunidad discuten un futuro incierto Uncertain Future

By David Sabados hile the horses are dancing at the Stock Show, another kind of dance is happening backstage for National Western. After the failure of the 2E bond, leaders of the various National Western organizations are facing increasing questions about how they plan to fund projects they insist are going forward and whether they have community support. At the same time, some community leaders and organizations are pushing the city and the National Western leadership to change direction.

If the terminology around National Western is confusing, you’re not alone–with almost everything having “National Western” in their names, it’s easy to mix things up–so here’s your primer on the groups involved. When we refer simply to “National Western,” we are referring to the entire location, organizations involved, etc.

National Western Center Authority (NWCA): The National Western Authority is the nonprofit organization that oversees the operations and maintenance of the entire campus.

National Western Stock Show (NWSS): Also a nonprofit organization, National Western Stock Show runs the annual stock show in January and some other programming.

National Western Complex: The National Western Complex is mostly facilities that have been on site for many years. Anyone who has been to the stock show or other events over the years are probably familiar with these buildings.

National Western Center: The National Western Center is the campus that is currently under construction. New elements for the 2022 Stock Show include the Stockyards Event Center, the new stockyards, CSU Spur buildings, and others.

Mayor’s Office of The National Western Center: This is the Denver municipal office, underneath the mayor, that oversees strategic planning and construction for the 250-acre campus.

Brad Buchanan was the planning director for the city from 2013-2018, including when the last bond to support National Western passed in 2015 and the Authority was set up in 2017.

Today, as CEO of the Authority, he’s involved with nearly every aspect of National Western from the public facing programs to infrastructure for the campus. “We program, operate, and maintain the National Western campus as those assets are completed by the city and handed over to the authority,” he explained in an interview with The G.E.S. Gazette.

For Buchanan, 2E’s failure “does not change the commitment to the campus. Does not change the commitment of the partners.” He’s said they are spending some time on engagement and education to explain the benefits of further improvements to the campus. “The challenge is bringing [the community] together so no one feels left out.”

Tykus Holloway, executive director for the Mayor’s Office of the National Western Center, echoed Buchanan’s assessment. “It changes the timing, but not the commitment.”

Neither see the voter’s rejection of 2E as a rejection of a new arena, but only the funding mechanism. Both also said how the arena is the financial engine of much of the campus: ticket, food and beverage, and other sales are intended to provide money for a community investment fund and generate revenue for the campus. Both also cited the passage of ballot measure 2C in 2015, which funded early stages of development at National Western, as proof of community support. 2C passed over 65%, with some of the strongest support coming from precincts in the G.E.S. community.

Paul Andrews, President and CEO of the National Western Stock Show, also sees projects pivoting, but not stopping. “That model [of funding] didn’t work. Now we’re talking with the city about other options. That new arena is a need, not a want.”

Not everyone agrees with that assessment of 2E’s failure or the changes that have taken place in the past six years, though. Members of the G.E.S. Coalition, which opposed 2E, said they don’t see genuine engagement from the city or National Western partners. The coalition has been advocating for reparations for the G.E.S. community. A portion of the National Western campus was previously privately owned and acquired by the city. After a public-private partnership at National Western failed and voters rejected 2E, they think the time is right for a broader conversation than they say the city wants to have, including potentially changing the overall master plan for National Western.

“They don’t want to entertain another plan,” said Robin Reichhardt, communications manager for the coalition. Reichhardt and Alfonso Espino, an organizer for the coalition, said they see 2E’s failure as more than a rejection of the funding source for the arena, but as a referendum on the city’s plans overall. Although they opposed an arena, which they say sits empty too much of the time and doesn't benefit the immediate community, they said they are more focused on how unused land on the National Western campus could be used for community benefit.

One of those ideas is a food market, which has come up frequently. A “year-round fresh food market” was first introduced in the 2015 bond but has not emerged with other projects.

Asked about a market, Tykus Holloway said “Ballot languages are always tough...from what I understand, it wasn't intended to be an inclusive list.” To Reichhardt and Espino, though, the market not being built and being included again in the 2021 bond as a selling point was another broken promise. “The whole proposal was tone deaf,” said Reichhardt.

Buchanan, asked whether he thought a food market was still realistic without 2E funds, responded “Absolutely – 100 percent.”

A spokesperson for Mayor Hancock also said a market and other improvements will go forward without the bond money. “The arena and public market are also key to our commitment to the Globeville and Elyria-Swansea neighborhoods that this campus redevelopment support community benefits and a Community Investment Fund, as they’ll be a major funding source for those commitments. An alternative funding mechanism is being determined, and we want to make sure any path forward reflects the needs of the community and includes City Council.”

The G.E.S. Coalition is known as a frequent voice of antagonism for the current administration, but in this case was not alone in their opposition and criticism. LJ Suzuki, head of the Globeville First registered neighborhood organization, also opposed the bond. He explained that after some early conversations about ideas like revenue sharing didn’t come to fruition, he and other community members didn’t see enough benefits to their community.

“I voted no to 2E because NWCA offered no commitments to our neighborhood. There was no upside for Globeville out of 2E – just higher taxes, more construction dust, and increased traffic during events,” Suzuki told The G.E.S. Gazette.

Meanwhile, Reichhardt, Espino, and like-minded residents are organizing themselves to try to present a unified community voice. They said they’ve brought up collective governance and ownership before but were dismissed by the city because they didn’t have a land trust. A few years ago, with some financial support from the city and CDOT, they started one but say the city moves the goal posts every time the community comes up with new options. They are hoping for some land to be put into a public interest land trust to benefit the immedi-

Anderson credits his father’s coaching style as the reason why he is such a great coach himself. He not only serves as a coach to his students, he also develops personal bonds with the kids. “I ask my students about their future, goals and ambition. Our students really enjoy that attention and care and their behavior improves.”

Beast Fingers and Anderson have been making noise in the rock climbing world. USA Climbing has even talked to him about how to diversify rock climbing by “exposing the sport to people of different classes and races.” Beast Fingers serves as a safe space to BIPOC climbers as well. From music to even food vendors, Beast Fingers introduces culture and heritage into the world of rock climbing. “We recently hosted a competition and Lil baby was playing on the radio and there was an African food vendor out front,” Anderson laughs.

As an African American climber, Anderson rarely sees climbers who look like him. But his presence alone has brought Black students to Beast Fingers and to the sport of rock climbing. Anderson explains his skin color as a rock climbing coach has made people in the Globeville community comfortable. Globeville also brings a sense of nostalgia for Anderson, because it resembles his hometown.

Beast Fingers students' success speaks for the amazing impact Anderson has on his kids. He has one student that is 5th in the state, and many national champions.

Students who have graduated from the program have gone to college and even pursued careers in psychology. “A former student was inspired to be a psychologist due to the mental strategies he learned here at Beast Fingers,” Anderson notes.

Anderson looks forward to the future for Beast Fingers Climbing. He is planning to host their annual youth competition and is working on renting high school football fields to have a wider space for future events. Beast Fingers is a force to be reckoned with; it exposes kids to the sport of rock climbing while helping kids become aware of their challenges and learn how to overcome them.

November election changed how the National Western partners and the community move forward.

“While we're disappointed in the loss, there's opportunity there as well to look at new options–to build community consensus. The first Tuesday in November we didn’t have that. "Aunque estamos decepcionados por la pérdida, también hay una oportunidad para buscar nuevas opciones, para construir un consenso comunitario. El primer martes de noviembre no teníamos eso. Estamos más preparados y conscientes de la importancia de este proyecto que nunca", dijo Buchanan.

man Anderson es el propietario del único gimnasio de escalada de propiedad negra de Colorado y el segundo gimnasio de escalada de propiedad negra del país. Beast Fingers Climbing es más que un gimnasio de escalada, es un espacio que ayuda a los jóvenes con la salud mental y el alivio del estrés.

Anderson, de 34 años y originario de Orlando (Florida), conoció la escalada a los 20 años. "Por aquel entonces trabajaba en Washington D.C. como diseñador de productos y un amigo me introdujo en este

emociones y sentimientos y también ayuda con el estrés y la ansiedad.

Anderson atribuye al estilo de entrenamiento de su padre la razón por la que él mismo es un gran entrenador. No sólo sirve de entrenador a sus alumnos, sino que también establece vínculos personales con los chicos.

"Pregunto a mis alumnos sobre su futuro, sus objetivos y su ambición. Nuestros alumnos disfrutan mucho de esa atención y cuidado y su comportamiento mejora".

deporte", dice Anderson. Se enamoró de la escalada al instante, y más tarde dedicaría su vida a ella.

En 2015, Anderson se trasladó a Colorado por motivos de trabajo y utilizó su creatividad y sus habilidades de diseño para fabricar un módulo de escalada en roca para escaladores llamado Beast Fingers. Este dispositivo crecería con el escalador y le ayudaría a mejorar su capacidad de escalada.

"A mi trabajo no le entusiasmaba que creara un producto por sorpresa, así que lo dejé". Anderson se certificó a través de la USA Climbing Association como entrenador de escalada en roca para adultos y niños. Abrió el gimnasio Beast Fingers en 2019 y ha recibido a muchos niños de la comunidad. "Tenemos un grupo diverso de niños, desde niños que experimentan falta de hogar, ansiedad y problemas de comportamiento hasta niños que no están familiarizados con [el] deporte hasta niños que son grandes fanáticos de la escalada. También es agradable ver a niños negros y morenos practicando este deporte", expresa Anderson.

Beast Fingers Climbing atiende a niños de 3 a 18 años. Hay una pista recreativa y otra de competencia en el lugar. Muchos estudiantes han llegado a competencias estatales y nacionales bajo la dirección de Anderson.

El enfoque de Anderson en la salud y el bienestar mental es lo que hace que Beast Fingers no sea como ningún otro gimnasio de escalada. Tiene un psicólogo deportivo en el personal que ayuda a los estudiantes con la ansiedad o estrés que puedan estar pasando fuera del gimnasio. Se dan descansos cerebrales y juegos mentales a los estudiantes para aliviar el estrés y ayudarles a controlar cualquier enfado o ansiedad. "Los padres me dicen que el comportamiento de sus hijos ha mejorado desde que están en el equipo de escalada de Beast Fingers Kids". Los estudiantes de Beast Fingers utilizan un programa llamado Mightier, que ayuda a los niños a analizar sus

en el mundo de la escalada. USA Climbing incluso ha hablado con él sobre cómo diversificar la escalada en roca "exponiendo el deporte a personas de diferentes clases y razas". Beast Fingers también sirve como espacio seguro para los escaladores BIPOC. Desde la música hasta los vendedores de comida, Beast Fingers introduce la cultura y el patrimonio en el mundo de la escalada. "Hace poco organizamos una competencia y Lil baby estaba sonando en la radio y había un vendedor de comida africana al frente", ríe Anderson.

Como escalador afroamericano, Anderson rara vez ve escaladores que se parezcan a él.

Pero su sola presencia ha atraído a estudiantes negros a Beast Fingers y al deporte de la escalada en roca. Anderson explica que su color de piel como entrenador de escalada en roca ha hecho que la gente de la comunidad de Globeville se sienta cómoda. Globeville también aporta un sentimiento de nostalgia para Anderson, porque se parece a su ciudad natal.

El éxito de los estudiantes de Beast Fingers habla del increíble impacto que Anderson tiene en sus niños. Tiene un estudiante que es 5º en el estado, y muchos campeones nacionales.

Los estudiantes que se han graduado en el programa han ido a la universidad e incluso han seguido carreras de psicología. "Un antiguo alumno se inspiró para ser psicólogo gracias a las estrategias mentales que aprendió aquí en Beast Fingers", señala Anderson.

Anderson mira al futuro de Beast Fingers Climbing. Está planeando organizar su competencia juvenil anual y está trabajando en el alquiler de campos de fútbol de la escuela secundaria para tener un espacio más amplio para futuros eventos. Beast Fingers es una fuerza a tener en cuenta; expone a los niños al deporte de la escalada en roca al tiempo que les ayuda a ser conscientes de sus retos y a aprender a superarlos.
