JUNIORS Ola! Gude! Guten Tag! Kamusta! Jambo! During International Week, we learnt so much about the 5 countries we picked in Year 5. 5MG learnt all about the mountainous country of Austria and even tried apple strudels, homemade by some of the students. 5MU learnt about the colourful history of Cuba and their love of vintage cars. 5ML learnt about the Kenyan Savannah and the animals that inhabit it. 5MF learnt about the diverse tribal culture of Papua New Guinea and 5MS learnt about the island population of the Philippines. Each day, the students would share with the other classes what they had learnt and, at the end of the week, the whole year group took part in a quiz about all 5 countries. The top scorers were Salma Abushady, Jana El Garahy, Ali-Zar Kayani and Saadon Al Kuwari. They were all rewarded with ‘International Expert’ awards! Also on Thursday, some students (and teachers) came into school dressed in traditional clothing from their chosen country. 5MG were spotted in lederhosen, 5MU wore red, blue and white to represent the colours of the Cuban flag, 5ML dressed up as African animals, 5MF donned tribal ceremonial attire and 5MS wore tropical, floral outfits. The effort put in by the students was fantastic. Another source of great excitement was the Decorate the Door competition! We all enjoyed seeing the doors take shape throughout the week and all the wonderful artwork that the classes had created about their country. 5ML even came third place! Congratulations to them and all the other winners.

SECONDARY Business Studies Department Marketing Trip 2019 This April we embarked upon our yearly Market Project in conjunction with Hilton Hotel, West Bay, Doha, where we took approximately 75 students over the course of three days from Tuesday 23rd to Thursday 25th April 2019. This year’s cohort included students from 6 different subject areas, ranging from BTEC Business, BTEC Travel & Tourism, included IGCSE students from Business Studies, Economics and Travel and IB Business Management. The IB Students used this as an opportunity to develop their research skills for their IA (Internal Assessments) - a compulsory part of the IB qualification. Students were given a brief history of the Hilton Company, from its origins in the early 1930s, to the multinational group of 13 separate companies that is today with a global brand name and a powerful marketing image. The students participated in information gathering, a site visit, team building and the Marketing Challenge exercise that will support their respective IGCSE or BTEC courses. The students were served a business cabaret style buffet lunch from the restaurant, some students were able purchase Starbucks coffee as reward for the best presentation. Special thanks to the staff at the Hilton, in particular Miss Demiana Wagih - Human Resource Supervisor and her marketing team, the GES Business Department staff who accompanied the students for the three days; Miss Cashel, Mr. Goodrum, Miss Reid, Miss Clarke, Mr. Wilson, Miss Perry and myself. Mr. Lloyd Thompson Head of Department Business & ICT.
