INFANTS Year 1 have been building recently and they’ve been doing a fantastic job. They’ve looked at a range of materials and their properties to make sure that they chose the right one for the job.

They started big by building the Doha skyline from strong boxes, then gradually got smaller - making photo frames from colourful, sturdy lolly sticks.

They’ve had a great time building and creating and now they know so much about materials. ​ In fact, they have done such a good job, that we are going to put all of the creations on display for their parents to come and see. Well done, Year 1!

JUNIORS Last week, Year 5 had a talk from Jose, a representative of Doha Environmental Actions Project (DEAP), about the important work they do in Doha and throughout Qatar to help reduce plastic pollution in the ocean. Jose showed students lots of images and statistics to illustrate how crucial their work is. He then told us about how DEAP began and how much rubbish they collect every single week from beaches around Qatar. The following day, Year 5 staff and students went to Semiasma beach to see for ourselves how much rubbish gets washed ashore. The students were amazed! After a brief safety talk, we got stuck in to filling as many refuse bags as we could with rubbish. We found many peculiar objects such as carpets, clothing and other household items, but the largest amount of rubbish was plastic materials such as water bottles, cups and bags. After just one hour, the beach was looking much cleaner and we had collected a large pile of rubbish. The staff and students felt really proud to have made such a positive impact whilst spending some time outdoors in the fresh air! One student said “It was much more fun than I thought and we filled the bags up really quickly! I would definitely do this again!�.

SECONDARY GES has become a BTEC nominated Centre in Qatar, for the delivery and counselling of BTEC teaching. The Business Studies & ICT Department continues to contribute to the overall educational value of GES in many ways; we have the growth of the BTEC programme of studies improved from KS4 Level 2 in Business, Media and Travel & Tourism to level 3 programmes. From the end of January 2019, the school will be delivering an adult focused programme of studies in Business Finance for Levels 4 and 5 at the GES BTEC Centre.

During the first term, a number of students from Year 11 IGCSE and Year 12 BTEC National Travel and Tourism visited Banana Island on a fact finding and market research mission into the facilities of this resort and to establish who are its current customers and how this Qatari oasis can be best used in the future.

The students conducted surveys, interviews, questionnaire and observation at three main areas of the island - at the reception and port of entry, on the boat and many stages throughout Banana Island. A variety of findings and conclusions which were submitted for student’s reports and coursework.

In ICT students are beginning their new topics.

Year 7 students will be looking at how computers work by investigating into the components and functionality. Year 8 students will commence their topic on binary representation and how computers function. Year 9 will begin their topic on Python programming.

All students are encouraged to use the Internet at home to continue the learning from their lessons and extend this at home. They can also use the ‘BBC Bitesize Computer Science’ page for further reading and learning.
