IMPORTANT INFORMATION Subject to be Applications for the academic year 2019/2020 Dear Parents, We would like to inform you that our waiting lists for the academic year 2019/2020 will be available online from the 22nd January 2019 until the 28th February 2019 and can be accessed through the following link: https://www.gulfenglishschool.sch. qa/admissions/admissions-process As mentioned previously, our admission policy has changed slightly. Priority places for our preschool classes will now be given to students attending The Gulf English Nursery. Entrance assessment will be held in February, depending on the places available. Please note that if your child is already attending The Gulf English Nursery you do not need to complete a new application at this stage.

• 28th February 2019 Online application will be closed.

We would like to also notify parents that the school has applied for a school fees increment for the Academic Year 2019/2020, pending Ministry of Education approval.

BIN OMRAN The end of last term saw lots of excitement surrounding National Day. Year 1 had been practicing hard for weeks for their performance and really did themselves proud on the day! Everyone enjoyed the celebrations. The children have come back from the break relaxed and ready for our new topic, ‘Time Travelers’. We have spent this week looking at our own personal time lines, ready to learn about significant points in history during the coming term. We have started learning about fractions in Maths, meaning an exciting pizza shop has opened up in our classroom! In English, we have been learning a set of instructions and why they are such an important part of writing.

Happy New Year! So far this term, Year 2 Bin Omran have been learning how to write recounts, learning about life on different continents and fine-tuning their times table knowledge and understanding by playing substituting games. Here at The Gulf English School Bin Omran, we also had a wonderful time celebrating Qatar National Day. As you can see from the pictures, everybody who attended had a great time and we would like to take this opportunity to thank H.H. Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani for bringing joy and prosperity to the people of Qatar.

INFANTS Term 2 promises to be a fantastic term in Year 2.

The children have come back from the holidays refreshed and ready to learn.

This term our topic is ‘Hooray Lets Go On Holiday!’. The children have been learning about the different continents and oceans around the world. We have been investigating the different cultures and customs on each continent, and comparing to them our own lives here in Qatar.

Our aim is to help our students become global citizens, so it is important we learn about different cultures.

Following this theme, we have also been looking at stories from around the world. We will be writing our very own story from another culture this term, so the children have been reading a range of books to get some inspiration!

The children have worked very hard in Maths so far this academic year and have started 2019 the same way. We have been learning about and practising how to tell the time. Hopefully soon they will be able to get themselves up in the morning for school.

2019 looks like it is going to be another fabulous year for Year 2!

JUNIORS Welcome back! J All of us in Year 4 hope you all had a wonderful, restful break and are ready for the exciting weeks ahead in Term 2.

As part of Book Week, which was held before the break, a famous author named Stephen Davies came to visit us. He visited each class in Year 4 and did some fun writing activities with all of the students.

Since returning to school for Term 2, Year 4 have been researching, investigating and learning about electricity. For the past few weeks, they have been learning about the various components in a circuit, how electricity works, and how to create a circuit.

The students in Year 4 have experimented with the different components in a circuit and tested them out in class.

SECONDARY We have recently completed our WWI Soldier Box Project in Year 9. The students created time capsules belonging to soldiers from WWI. They imagined that the war had ended and that, in their hurry to leave the front line, their soldier had left behind a box of personal items.

pigeon who won a medal for successfully carrying so many messages in France during the war! Well done, Year 9 for all of your splendid efforts!

Abdulla Al Mutawa said, “I am thankful for the experience I got to have doing this project, as it has helped me in many ways. I had immersed myself in the life of a soldier in WWI. I have learnt about the experiences faced in WWI and what the soldiers had to go through throughout the war, including how terrible and unimaginable conditions in the trenches were, moreover the war was to a point where I pity them. All in all, I have really enjoyed working on this project with my partner.”

The students decided which country their soldier was from and depicted their soldier’s experience of the war. This year students created boxes from the perspective of Turkish, German, French, Polish and British soldiers.

Students included diaries written by their soldier, letters between the soldier and their families at home, food ration packets and cans, information on the trenches and the weapons used, as well as personal trinkets and lucky charms. Students also included trench order booklets, medical cards, first aid kits, photos belonging to the soldiers, and propaganda posters. All the letters and diaries were written by the students themselves!

Some made models to recreate the trenches. Here, a student has included a shell hole and bunker.

Some students even researched the role of carrier pigeons, including the famous Cher Ami carrier

Meanwhile in Geography, our Year 7 students have been learning about volcanoes and tsunamis. Here are some of this year’s Volcano models.
