WHOLE SCHOOL It is always delightful having the opportunity to see students developing in a range of subject areas. Whether it’s the progress in Mathematics or creative designs in Art. We have been very fortunate in current times to be able to see and share student work with the effective use of technology. In today’s article you’ll have an opportunity to see some of the amazing talent our students have demonstrated whilst working from home. Determined and unwavered, our young learners become and inspiration for many in their continuous efforts to succeed. They have pushed through the obstacles and hurdles to ensure they are able to continue in their learning. This week, the leadership team have been researching ways to assess our students in the most effective way. Teaching and assessment are two sides of the same coin and their link is crucial in the development of learners. As we prepare for the upcoming assessment days, we are continually driving improvement and progress so that our learners can achieve their potential.

BIN OMRAN Year 1 have settled back into school very well this half term. The children have been getting used to the new routines we follow in Key Stage 1 and how we can stay Covid safe. We have been completing daily Dough Disco lessons to build up stamina in the muscles in our hands. This way we are able to hold our pencil correctly, gain full control of how we manipulate it and are able to write for longer periods of time. The children have quickly taken to Year 1 Maths. We always follow the CPA approach. We begin learning with concrete equipment and follow on to pictorial and abstract methods of Maths. The children have been using a variety of equipment to find out what one more of any given number within 20 is! This term our focus text is ‘Dogger’. The book about a little boy who loses his missing toy. We have done lots of work linked to our text, such as creating lost toy posters and describing our favourite toys using adjectives. We are currently practicing our communication and language skills by retelling the story of Dogger using a sequence story board. We will soon move on to writing the story as well! In IPC the children have been learning all about what makes us who we are. As part of science we have been learning the parts of the human body. Some of the children have been using their phonics to sound out and write the names of the body parts by labelling a diagram and some children have been matching body part images to words! During this topic we have also looked at the countries we are from and the types of houses we live in.

Infants Music October 2020
INFANTS
Pre-school have started their musical year by saying 'Hello' with a song. They have revisited old favourites from Nursery. 'The wheels on the bus' is very popular, but 'Five little monkeys jumping on the bed' is the all-time favourite. The students are having a lot of fun in their lessons, despite the restrictions. Reception students have revisited songs learnt last year, and 'Ten little fishies' still appears to be the favourite! They have enjoyed listening to and singing a song from 'Pete, the Cat and his White Shoes. The students have learnt how people from around the world say 'Hello' and have enjoyed singing greeting songs in several languages. In Year 1, the students are learning about different sound sources. First, they explored ways of using their voices and had a lot of fun, making funny voice sounds. Following on from this, the students listened to sounds in their environment, identifying everything from traffic noise to splashing in a pool. This week, they have played small percussion instruments and focused on starting and stopping together as a class. They are also learning some pirate songs linked to their IPC topic, which they perform with relish. Year two students have been creating long and short sounds and have started to read a graphic score. They have learnt several new songs and can indicate long and short sounds with their hands while performing a song. They are also learning to perf orm a series of traditional songs supported by actions.

JUNIORS Juniors Music Music plays an essential part in our education as it helps us develop holistically and enables us to express ourselves safely and creatively. We can use music to learn science, mathematics, language, history and even physical education! We use music to investigate all of these subjects through a range of learning activities such as movement and rapping. One of the reasons we teach music at GES is because it can be a way to recognise beauty in the world around you. It teaches you to be gentle and caring as well as giving you the strength to navigate your way through school life. Although we cannot create beautiful melodies together in school, let's continue to integrate music into our daily lives. Try listening to your favourite song when you are relaxing or even sing it at the top of your lungs to let off some steam. I am looking forward to getting back to the music room in the near future to create some beautiful memories and melodies again. Stay safe and see you all soon! Mr. Joe.

SECONDARY Despite the challenges of continued online learning, our Media and Creative Arts students are developing some impressive ideas. Many who have selected AS Media have grasped the content well and are fully engaged with the curriculum, being both enthusiastic and hardworking in all lessons. Apart from enjoying the subject, they are building good relations among themselves, always encouraging and supporting each other. It is a privilege, this early on, to be teaching these students Media – their positive and bright attitudes make teaching so much more engaging. There are some students who go far and beyond our expectations and are always willing and keen to know more. To name a few: Amna Faragalla, Noor Mashhadi, Ameen Darwish, Mariam Al Thani, Amna Ahmed and Amna Al Hitmi. All students are doing well, but these girls deserve the spotlight for the exceptional effort they put into their work. Within our GCSE Art groups, many students have responded to tasks with impressive effort and creativity. Their unique interpretations of our chosen themes and the high standards shown are inspiring. I am excited by the fact that I am going to be able to see some exceptional work produced by our students, by the end of this academic year.
