IMPORTANT INFORMATION Dear parents, Kindly note that the dates for re-enrolling your child/children are from 15th March 2020 You will receive a re-enrolment email on 14th March 2020, detailing the online re-enrolment process. Please also note that it is highly important that you complete the online re-enrolment and pay the re-enrolment fee of 4,000 QR by or before 31st March 2020 to ensure that your child’s seat is reserved for next academic year at The Gulf English School. Please note that the school fees for the academic year 2020/2021 may be increased. You will be notified of the new school fees in due course. Year 11, 12 and 13 students may have international examinations (IB, AS-level and IGCSE) until end of June 2020. Examinations will run during Ramadan and the Eid break. All dates are subject to Ministry of Education Approval.

INFANTS We started off the New Year with our new IEYC topic, ‘Blast Off’! This term, we have been l earning about Space and the Solar System. We have learnt to retell our core text ‘Beegu’ by Alexis Deacon and used actions and text maps to help us remember the story. The children have learnt about the planets in the Solar System. We discovered that the Sun is a star called a yellow giant and that stars are, in fact, big balls of fire and come in different colours: blue, white, yellow, orange and red. Inspired by all the facts they have learnt, the children decided to do some writing.
We explored how astronauts go to space and what their life is like on the International Space Station. The children enjoyed playing in the Space Station role play areas. In Maths, we have been learning to recognise numbers up to 10 and add two groups of objects which make a total of 10! We have also been learning to compare two groups by saying which one has ‘more’ and which one has ‘fewer’ objects. Exploring ‘Bee-bots’ has been super-exciting for the children. Two more classes delivered fantastic class assemblies. Well done to RML and RMF - you have been amazing!

JUNIORS Last week, Year 4 went on our entry point trip for our new IPC Topic ‘Land, Sea and Sky.' We had 3 trips in one! First, we visited Purple Island in Al Khor, where we were on the lookout for all the wildlife in the area. We found a variety of birds and fish, not all as healthy as others! After a long walk, we decided to have a relaxing lunch in Al Khor park before moving onto the beach. This was our favourite part of the trip! Even though we weren’t too keen on the idea of swimming at first, we all faced our fears and ended up having a lovely, messy time in the water. We found the trip useful but very tiring so a quick, well-deserved nap was taken by some of the children on the way back to school. What a fantastic day!

SECONDARY Less than four weeks remaining of term 2 left; hasn’t the year gone fast?! As usual, there hasn’t been a dull moment in our lively English department. Members of the department are busy preparing for the upcoming World Book Day (as well as partaking in our usual superhero roles). The main aim of WBD is to promote reading amongst our community, encouraging teachers and students to lose themselves in the magical world of words. Another fun aspect of WBD is to immerse ourselves completely into books by dressing up as our favourite characters (nothing like a bit healthy competition between departments). Fresh from completing their mid-term reading assessments, students are busy working hard as they will soon be doing their end of term assessments. Along with the end of term assessments, the week beginning 15th March will be very exciting and fun-filled, as it sees the return of Science Week. The Science department have been working extremely hard in organising engaging, entertaining and interesting activities for the full week, and the English department will be supporting them. In their English classes, building up to Science week, students will be writing a newspaper article about climate change and global warming, which will then be displayed during the Science Fair. As always, we expect to see lots of wonderful and interesting pieces of work from all students! Science Week is not the only interesting upcoming event, we also have the return of The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. This year, The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award will be managed by two members of the English department and it will include a small group of Year 9 students taking
part, to help them gain essential skills, experience and build their confidence; all out in the desert. Finally, as we are coming towards the end of Term 2, this means that we are sadly going to be saying goodbye, (temporarily) to our Year 11 students, who will be leaving early towards the end of April to go on their exam leave. We know they have worked extremely hard over their last two KS4 years, all that we require from them is one final push to achieving the grades they strive for. We wish you all the best guys!!
