WHOLE SCHOOL We’ve had a successful week with many students returning to school. In today’s issue of Al Sedra, you will be able to see how our learners have explored topics such as climate change and the global environment. It’s delightful to see the wonder and curiosity when students explore these subjects with such interest. We are continuously encouraging our learners to develop these qualities so that they may be the best lifelong learners. We encourage you to do the same at home and embolden your child to observe, consider and explore the marvels around them. From the plants at home to the clouds in the sky. The study of Science has given us the opportunity to expand our discovery and question the wonders around us. There is still so much which we have not been able to answer within the realms of Science. For these unsolved questions, our GES students will one day provide answers.

INFANTS
In Preschool, we've been having so much fun learning about jungle animals as our IPC topic is; Animal Rescuers. We have been encouraged to explore the small world sand trays as well as the role play areas all the time developing our imagination and vocabulary. In Maths we've been counting crocodile teeth, recapping numbers from 1 to 5 and worked on our cutting skills to make teeth out of playdough. Our letter of the week was 'S for snake' which we decorated with a range of colours using crayons and paints.

JUNIORS The students in Year 3 have had a very exciting start to this half term. As well as continuing to work hard in all subjects online and in class, they have had the opportunity to participate in the Young Innovators award. This year the topic was ‘How you can mitigate climate change challenges and promote sustainability in your home and surroundings’. We have had some fantastic entries illustrating some excellent ideas about how we can help keep our planet clean. All Year 3 children who entered should be very proud of their work. Aside from this, we have started our new topic called ‘Island Life’. The children have had an exciting start to the topic as they were ‘shipwrecked’ on a tropical island! The students had to pack a survival kit and only bring five things with them that they would need to survive. We can wait to see more of the amazing work this topic will bring.

SECONDARY To quote Albert Einstein: ‘The important thing is to never stop questioning’. This is the underlining ethos behind every scientist, and something that we relish in the science department. We always encourage ourselves and our students to ask further questions, to dive deeper into the science behind the world. Which brings us perfectly on to what we have been doing with our students in the past couple of months. We have been exploring the marvels of the plant world and looking at how plants and leaves survive. We have taken a journey through the roots, up the stem and into the leaves, and investigated how the cells work together as a team for the survival of the plant. We have ended the journey with the leaf, which embodies an essential process that is responsible for all life on earth, known as photosynthesis. Photosynthesis is the process in which a plant makes its own food – and this is vital for survival on Earth. As we are well aware, plants are an essential part of the ecosystem and without them life will cease to exist. These topics of plants and photosynthesis, as well as life itself, stretches from preschool to year three and secondary science – and it’s a concept that is taught and will be visited, revised and explored many times. When looking at the plants in the ecosystem it brings us to a topic which we always discuss – we see it on news channels, YouTube videos and in our everyday life – and that is our environment. This never ending link from topic to topic emphasises the role of science in our day-to-day lives. As Edward Taylor said: ‘The science of today is the technology of tomorrow’. With that being said, I invite everyone to take this opportunity to question life around you, to ask why and how is this occurring? And, most importantly, can I do something about it and can I change or improve it? Can I better myself and can I help those around me?
