WHOLE SCHOOL Last week we were immersed in our book days for the Junior school. This week it was celebrated at the Infants and Secondary schools. The teachers and students dressed as some delightful book characters. There was a variety of outfits ranging from Diary of a Whimpy Kid to Where’s Wally. Students were able to enjoy the sight of these characters enacted by their teachers. Throughout this month, we have been persistently encouraging our learners to read more. Reading is arguably one of the most influential factors for a child’s education success. We encourage all parents to read with their children and ask them about some of the characters showcased by our teachers. This week we were also able to enjoy celebrations with our IB students. Last year’s cohort attended a celebration meal with our current cohort and IB staff to talk and reminisce their years of study and hard work. It is invaluable seeing our learners develop so much throughout their time at The Gulf English School. Now we can see many of them prepare for new challenges in a whole host of different industries. As we approach an ever evolving world, demanding new skills and knowledge, the one consistent skill will always be required; the ability to read.

INFANTS This term, the children have had their learning centered around the story of “Man on the Moon” by Simon Bartram. This story tells the story of Bob. He is everyone's favourite man on the moon; follow him on his daily adventures. Bob has a special job - looking after the moon. He keeps it clean and entertains passing space tourists as well as giving guided tours. He knows everything about the moon and that there is definitely no such thing as aliens! Space has always been a fascinating and mysterious subject for children to learn, and now we've made it possible as English and Maths have space-themed activities that stretch the children’s understanding and link our overall topic. So far we have had some fantastic pieces of writing which have included all of our punctuation steps to success and children sharing their thoughts feelings and ideas about the areas of learning we are covering during topic time. In Maths, we will continue to look at and consolidate previous learning which include, counting systems , addition/subtraction and now focusing on multiplication. We Look forward to more fun learning during this positive second term.

JUNIORS The students in Year 6 have had a fascinating start to this half-term. Besides working hard in all subjects online and in class, they have enjoyed our Arabian Nights themed reading month. We have been decorating our classroom doors with Arabian Night themed artwork. We have been enjoying Sinbad's voyages in our reading lessons, and we even got to spend a day dressed in Arabian themed costumes. We have been tuning our mathematician skills with our incredible work on percentages, decimals and fractions. We have all put 100% effort into this topic and have produced some fantastic work. In IPC, we have been learning about endangered species around the world. We have learnt about the many reasons a species becomes endangered and have discussed how they can be protected. In writing, we have enjoyed creating a non-chronological report on our very own creature. We were able to choose their appearance, habitat, their diet, along with their likes and dislikes. Year 6 have been very creative with their ideas and have delivered some great pieces of writing.

SECONDARY This week in KS3 (Years 7, 8 and 9) ICT our students are starting their new topics. Year 7s will be starting their topic on Excel spreadsheets using a cinema theme to learn about how they can use features of the software effectively. Year 8 students are going to begin their new topic on HTML website creation, and year 9s are working on advanced scratch programming. The assessment for KS3 students will take place on the week commencing 14th February, during the school week, and the students will have revision guidance shared with them beforehand. KS4 (Computer Science): During the upcoming assessment week, our computer science students will be completing their assessment base, on topics studies up to this point. Mr Ahsan has already created the revision file for the students and he has shared it via Microsoft Teams. Students are encouraged to continually work on programming practise during free time at home, and to make this a regular home study habit.
