YOUR WEEKLY UPDATE ON ALL THAT’S GOING ON AT THE GULF ENGLISH SCHOOL
19th September 2019
INFANTS The children in Year 1 have been having lots of fun pretending to be pirates and going on treasure hunts as part of our topic ‘Treasure Island’. As pirates explore many different places, we have been doing the same.
We started with Qatar, and we have been exploring the human and physical features of the desert in Zekreet and Doha city. We then created a mural to showcase everything we learnt when comparing the desert and city.

JUNIORS This week, Year 5 students have been holding in-class elections in order to select their 2019-20 Student Council Representatives. This gave us a chance to learn about democratic voting systems - like the one used in the United Kingdom - which, in turn, has helped us become better informed global citizens. After learning about this system of voting, students decided that a class vote would be the fairest way to choose the most caring, supportive, responsible and respectful members of each class to represent the student voice at important meetings. First, students who considered themselves as positive role models were given the opportunity to run as a candidate in the election. Those students then had to write a short speech about themselves, detailing what they promise to do for our school, and provide a list of things they would like to improve this year at GES. After hearing each candidate’s speech, all students then had the chance to reflect on what was said, before choosing who they thought would be the best person for the job. All votes were cast anonymously then entered into a ballot box before being counted by the class teacher. The two students with the most votes from each class were then awarded the title of Student Council Representative.

SECONDARY The Humanities department offers a huge welcome back to all GES students. We also welcome two new teachers, Mr Choudhury and Mrs Willgrass. We hope that all students have had a restful and exciting holiday, and we look forward to hearing all about the Humanity based experiences that you may have had over the summer; such as trips you have taken and places you have visited. We would like to congratulate all GCSE History and Geography students, as well as all IB History and Geography students, on their results this summer. We wish all of our graduating students lots of success with their future studies. We also want to congratulate the following students for receiving ‘Student of the Month’ awards in August, in either History or Geography: Kamal, Moustafa, Yr 8 Mohammed Al Romaihi, Yr 8 Latifa AL Kuwari, Yr 9 Hamza Ibrahem, Yr 9 Khalifa Sadiq, Yr 9 Hind Johar, Yr9 Dhabya Al Suwaidi, Yr 10 AlDana Al Kuwari, Yr10
Please keep an eye on the KS3 update, sent home every week, as well as on the Humanities noticeboard to see who will receive ‘Student of the Month’ in September, and for announcements regarding trips and rewards. Please also note: All KS3 students should have received a textbook for History and Geography by now. If not, please inform the classroom teacher or the Head of Department (Ms Jenner) and they will be provided.
