WHOLE SCHOOL In recent days, we have seen the culmination of the American elections as well as an international announcement for a potential Coronavirus vaccine. This week has shown signs of promise and hope across the world. The same could be said, closer to home at The Gulf English School. Our younger learners have meticulously crafted some wonderful pieces to demonstrate their understandings. From young to old, crafting as an expression is something which appeals to children of all ages. Parents will find this to be a wonderful bonding exercise with their children. Whether you use paper plates or scrap paper, anything can be used for these expressions. It’s wonderful to see the range of creative thoughts articulated with basic materials.
An American study asked 1500 students to think of as many uses for a paper clip. They followed these students through to their adult life and found that those who could identify more uses, demonstrated creative thought and divergent thinking. These were key skills identified in successful Business leaders and CEOs. Creative thinking should be harnessed and promoted in young learners but sadly, isn’t valued enough. Try crafting with your child and share your creations with us. Have a look in this week’s Al Sedra for some imaginative ideas.

INFANTS
Students in Reception are having great fun in learning! They have been making new friends whilst enjoying a range of activities that have helped them to learn new things.
This term, the students have been learning about Nursery Rhymes. Last week, they enjoyed learning the rhyme Five Speckled Frogs, where they added actions to help with remembering the words. Life cycle headbands and paper plate frogs were a great way to help with learning the life cycle of a frog. The students also experimented with green and white paint to create different shades of green.
In Phonics, the focus is blending with the sounds that are already known, using our tapping shoulder to help. Some students have started segmenting the sounds for writing, and are trying to use a pre-cursive handwriting style. Online phonics games have helped to reinforce learning.
In Maths, the students been creating simple patterns, using positional language and talking about common 2D shapes.
During online lessons, students are confidently interacting in Literacy, Maths and Phonics. Most students are beginning to show confidence in answering questions and are becoming enthusiastic when joining in with actions, songs and story retelling.

JUNIORS There have been lots of changes since we returned to school. We have been spending time discussing the work the A and B children have done. As it has been very busy, Year 4 thought it was time to extend a shout out to our group C children. You have been working tirelessly at home, without face-to-face interaction with your class teacher. Well done guys! You are displaying our four core values each and every day with all the hard work you are putting in at home. There have been many pieces of work that have been outstanding, especially the instructional videos you created for mummification during your IPC topic. There were so many! Here are a few examples of you all in action. Keep up all your hard work, and we can’t wait to have you back in class. From all the Year 4 teachers and TAs.

SECONDARY Design and Technology (D.T) is an inspiring, rigorous, and practical subject. Design and Technology encourages children to learn to think, and intervene, creatively to solve problems, both as individuals and as members of a team. At The Gulf English School this term, we are encouraging the children to use their creativity and imagination to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems, within a variety of contexts; considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. The children are also given opportunities to reflect upon and evaluate past and present design technology, its uses, and its effectiveness, and they are encouraged to become innovators and risk-takers. Through a variety of creative and practical activities, we teach the knowledge, understanding, and skills needed to engage in an iterative process of designing and making, and, in return, children will show their development and process through NEA (Non Exam Assessments). Currently, the children are engaging in a creative design process involving products based around the cinema, which is something they are excited to work on as it's one of their favorite pastimes.
