This Month: A

Lenten Worship Series, “Seven

Last Words”

As we move toward the sacred season of reflection and renewal, known as Lent, our church is preparing to embark on a powerful new worship series centered on the Seven Last Words the final sayings Jesus spoke from the cross.

These sayings are more than historical moments; they are windows into the heart of Christ, revealing his compassion, his mission, and his unwavering love for humanity.

Each week, we will explore one of these profound statements, allowing Scripture to guide us into deeper understanding and spiritual transformation. Through thoughtful preaching, intentional worship, and moments of quiet reflection, we’ll consider how these ancient words still speak to us in our modern lives. Themes such as forgiveness, promise, trust, and surrender will anchor our journey, as we draw closer to the meaning of the cross.

This series invites us not only to remember what Jesus endured but to recognize what His final words continue to offer us today: grace for our failures, comfort in our suffering, and the promise of new life. Whether you are new to faith or have walked this road for many years, these weeks will provide space to listen, learn, and be renewed.

I invite each of you to be a part of our worship experiences as we look forward to walking this sacred path together, preparing our hearts for the celebration of resurrection.

Executive Minister

“Planning Today for Tomorrow’s Ministry”

For many decades, Germantown UMC has been a place of worship, comfort, service, and community. People of this congregation have celebrated joys, supported one another through grief, and shaped faith and values. One meaningful way to ensure that the ministry of GUMC continues for future generations is by remembering the church in our will.

Including the church in our estate planning is not only a practical decision, but, also, a spiritual one. A bequest is one final act of stewardship, reflecting gratitude for the role GUMC has played in our lives and faith journey. It is a way to say, “What I have received, I now pass along.”

Many people assume that leaving a gift to the church is something only the wealthy can do. In actuality, bequests of all sizes make a difference. Large or small, each gift contributes to the ongoing ministry of worship, education, outreach, and care for those in need. Over time, these gifts collectively strengthen the church’s ability to serve faithfully and respond to God’s call.

Remembering GUMC in our will can also be done without affecting our current financial security or our ability to care for loved ones. A bequest comes into effect only after our lifetime and can be structured in many ways, such as a specific amount, a percentage of your estate, or what remains after providing for family and friends. With thoughtful planning, we can honor both our personal commitments and our spiritual values.

There is also a deeply personal dimension to legacy giving. A will is more than a legal document it is a reflection of what mattered most to us. By including the church in our will, we bear witness to the faith that guided our lives. We help ensure that future generations will have a place to worship, learn, serve, and encounter God, just as we did.

From a practical standpoint, having an up-to-date will is a gift in itself. It brings clarity, reduces uncertainty for loved ones, and ensures that our wishes are carried out. Including GUMC in our plans can be a natural extension of this careful preparation, aligning our resources with our enduring values.

Finally, remembering GUMC in our will is an expression of hope. It trusts that God’s work, through the church, will continue beyond our own lifetimes. It affirms that the ministries we cherish today…things like worship, pastoral care, outreach, and education will remain strong for those who come after us.

If you have not yet created or reviewed your will, consider prayerfully reflecting on the legacy you wish to leave. Remembering the church is a lasting way to give thanks for the past, support the present, and invest in the future of faith. For more conversation about how you might include GUMC in your estate planning, I’d be happy to discuss it with you.

Owings Life Enrichment Center

When we look around at our society, it seems more divided than ever. When we look deeper, we discover that some of this division could very well be coming from Sunday mornings across our country. Today’s churches all the different denominations seem to differ on what Jesus said about this or that issue. But we don’t have to contribute to the division. We are “Jesus Followers,” and we can go right to the source for our answers. So, I felt the best way for us to begin 2026 was with our own in-depth examination into “What Did Jesus Really Say.”

I was inspired to do this series after reading Adam Hamilton’s latest book, The Message of Jesus. Feel free to order a copy if you want to dig deeper. In it, Adam explains that theologian Gordon Fee once said, “You cannot know anything about Jesus, anything, if you miss the kingdom of God…”

In this series, we begin with the kingdom of God, continue to the Sermon on the Mount, then look at Jesus’ parables, who Jesus said He is, and, finally, we will study His final words.

The Prism Riot has incredible music lined up for us to celebrate Jesus...and dance to, if you feel like it!

Join us, this winter, just as you are (blue jeans and snow boots welcome) on Sundays, at 10:30am, in the OLEC. Come celebrate Jesus with us!

Hymnathon Returns February 7!

GUMC’s Music Ministry offers its second annual Hymnathon fundraiser on February 7, at 9 am. Proceeds from this fundraiser will support scholarships for Music and Worship Arts Week in Lake Junaluska, North Carolina, in June.

How does it work?

Participants will sing as many hymns as possible in a three-hour time span. There are multiple ways of providing financial support for our choristers:

• You may choose to support a singer by pledging an amount per the number of hymns sung by the chorister. (For example, if you support Todd Wilson at $1 per hymn, and he sings 200 hymns in that time span, you’d be supporting Todd with $200.)

• You may also support singers by making a fixed dollar amount pledge. We suggest the following fixed rates of support:

 John Wesley level of $500

 Charles Wesley level of $250

 Susannah Wesley level of $100

• You may underwrite the costs of a single youth or child attending. ($1,285 covers registration, room, and board for one child or youth.)

Saturday, February 7 9 am

To donate, click here or scan QR code

A fun part of the morning is that anyone can drop into the sanctuary during the event and join in the singing. You may halt the proceedings, for a fee, to sing your favorite hymn right then and there, regardless of where we are in the hymnal.

A fun, new wrinkle is to create a bidding opportunity to ban a hymn for a year. Imagine that you are tired of a particular hymn. I envision that the highest bidder will be able to request that one hymn be given a sabbatical for an entire year. Please write which hymn it is, so if someone loves that hymn, they may outbid you and retire their least favorite hymn, instead. I imagine someone trying to ban “Amazing Grace” for a year would create a bidding competition!

Our goal is to raise $10,000 in scholarships, which we met last year, thanks to your generosity. If we are really successful and raise more than $10,000, we will add those proceeds to the Dell Harriman Music Endowment Fund.

How can I sponsor a singer?

Tables will be in the narthex, beginning January 18, to sign up for Hymnathon support. You may also click on the link above or scan the QR code.

I look forward to another warm and generous level of support from the GUMC family, as we endeavor to equip our young people with worship and fellowship experiences that last a lifetime.

Ash Wednesday Evensong is quickly approaching. As the name of the service indicates, this will be an evening of sung hymns, prayers, anthems, and psalms. This service acts as a pivot from the season of Epiphany to the season of Lent. We will receive the imposition of ashes and commit to the coming season of spiritual preparation for Easter. Join the GUMC Chancel Choir as they lead us in Ash Wednesday Evensong, February 18, at 6:30 pm, in the sanctuary.

Each month we recognize a volunteer or volunteers who make an impact by selflessly sharing their time and talents for the betterment of our church and community.

If you’ve ever enjoyed a delicious barbecue meal at GUMC, chances are you’ve experienced one of Mark Schielke’s favorite ways to serve cooking with a purpose. For many years, Mark has used his food preparation skills as a hands-on way to serve our church and support missions near and far.

Mark has always been in food service, so this felt like a natural way for him to serve. Whether it’s grilling for the Emmaus annual spring BBQ (which has benefited numerous local and international missions over the past 25 years) or flipping delicious burgers at the fall Kickoff Cookout, Mark enjoys using his talents and resources to help others. He also appreciates being able to utilize the BBQ grills, generously donated by Jim Corkern and George Marinos, to feed others and raise money for missions.

Beyond the grill, Mark’s most significant volunteer role has been with the Kenya Mission. He has traveled to Kenya three times with mission teams. Mark says that witnessing the deep gratitude of the Kenyan people, even with so little, taught him a powerful lesson about being thankful for all that God has given us.

Over his 28 years as a member of GUMC, Mark has served in many other ways as well, including ushering, safety team, lay leader, various committees, and Mountain Top. He is also an active member of the Emmaus Sunday school class and the Sonrise Bible Study.

Looking ahead, Mark and the Emmaus class hope to see a younger Sunday school class or group interested in cooking for missions, so it can continue for generations to come. If you’re interested in learning more about this ministry or any area where Mark serves he would love to talk with you. You can contact Mark at 901-359-5922.

Thank you, Mark, for faithfully serving God and others with your hands, your heart, and your grilling skills!

At GUMC, the hymns, the choir, and all the additional musical talents add to the richness of the service. And, we are overwhelmed with the friendliness of the members and all the activities and areas of service.”

Linda and John Sanders

Germantown UMC welcomed Linda and John Sanders into membership on Sunday, January 11, at the traditional worship service. They joined by transferring their memberships from Palm City Presbyterian Church in Palm City, Florida. Their Welcome Friends are Bob and Sue Land.

When asked what about GUMC made them want to become a part of our church community, they replied: “We felt the church friendliness from our first visit with the greeters, ushers, and people seated around us. The Mission Statement includes being a “welcoming” community of faith, and that is exhibited in so many ways. We appreciate the pastors, the traditional and Prism services, the amazing Chancel Choir and the Riot Praise Band, and the many ministries, missions, and events that serve Christ and members of GUMC.”

“So deeply do we care for you that we are determined to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves, because you have become very dear to us.” ~ 1 Thessalonians 2:8

The Care Ministries Team continues to grow and expand. With 25 members now serving, we are continually seeking meaningful ways to support our congregation. During the 2024–25 year, we offered the following well-attended seminars: Coping with Life’s Challenges, Coping with the Death of a Loved One, Coping with Separation and/or Divorce, Hospice and Palliative Care, and Advance Care Planning and the Law

This coming year, we will offer additional seminars, and you will hear more about those soon. For now, we are pleased to introduce a new offering: Steady Ground: A Safe Place for Those Navigating Loss and Change.

Steady Ground is a facilitated support group for adults experiencing loss and major life transitions. This includes grief following the death of a loved one, as well as the loss of a marriage, changes in work or health, or the loss of a life you once knew. Grounded in compassion and faith, Steady Ground offers a safe and respectful space to share, listen, and reflect together. Come as you are and be supported along the way.

Steady Ground - When/Where:

Steady Ground will begin on Sunday, March 22, and will meet on the third Sunday of each month in the Mike Wilson Fellowship Hall going forward. The group will meet at 11:30 am, or immediately following the worship service.

Participants must register online and will have the option to purchase lunch. Since we are unable to accommodate all dietary restrictions, participants are welcome to bring their own lunch. Lunch will be from 11:30 am to 12 pm, and our time together will conclude at 1:15 pm.

Click here to register, or scan QR code below.

Please Note: If there are no registrations by the Wednesday prior to the meeting, Steady Ground will not be held that month. There will be no Steady Ground meeting in June.

Blessingsforthemonthof February!

In this, the second month of 2026, we remember Valentine’s Day. When we think of the day, we often associate it with couples who love one another in a romantic sense. However, I believe it’s more expansive than romantic love. I invite

you to think of the power of love as a transformative power, because of the source of all love God.

Valentine’s Day can be a day where we celebrate the relationships we have with our friends and family and to recognize that all love flows from God. When we focus on God’s love for us, we can embody God’s love to others with how we live and with our attitudes. We can more easily forgive the hurts that sometimes occur between friends and family. We can show kindness to the stranger. We can show compassion to others to the store clerks, the stranger on the street, or in the places we live. Acts of kindness, and the attitude behind our words, can be expressions of love.

Lamentations 3:22: “The faithful love of the Lord never ends! His mercies never cease!” Do you hear this? God’s love is never-ending and there’s nothing you can do, or not do, to be loved by God.

Romans 8:38-39: “And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—nothing can separate us from God’s love.”

Valentine’s Day can be a celebration of God’s love for you! If your loved ones have died, and you find yourself filled with the echoes of the love you once experienced in physical presence every day, I invite you to take comfort with all that you had and be open to all that can be, because God is continuing to love you now, today.

“We love because He first loved us.”

1 John 4:19

Valentine’s Day reminds us that love is given freely, received gratefully, and enjoyed abundantly.

HappyValentine’sDay!

Grace and Peace, Linda

Did you know scams are increasing daily! Of course you know this, but how do you protect yourself?

One scam that is popular today is “ghost tapping.” Ghost tapping occurs when someone with a special device gets very close to your credit card or phone and makes a payment without your permission. This can happen when you’re at the airport, in stores, or in any busy place filled with many people.

You can do the following to protect yourself:

• Pay attention to the charges each month on your card, even the small ones.

• Be aware if you’re in a store and someone is rushing you to tap quickly, or when a payment register doesn’t show the amount, or if you’re not offered a receipt.

• Use an RFID-blocking wallet or purse. It won’t allow unwanted taps.

• Always look at the screen before you pay and make sure the amount is correct.

• Turn on alerts from your bank, so you’ll know right away if a charge is made.

• Avoid tap-to-pay in crowded or unfamiliar places: insert or swipe your card instead.

If something seems wrong: CALL your BANK right away, and they can freeze your card and stop more charges. Also, report the scam to the Better Business Bureau Scam Tracker.

At-Home BALANCE EXCERCISES THAT HELP PREVENT FALLS

As we age, we often develop new health conditions, begin taking more medications, and lose muscle mass. The threat of an injury-inducing fall weighs heavily on the minds of many older adults and their caregivers, for good reason. Falls account for more than 95% of hip fractures, which can have a devasting and, often, permanent impact on a person’s physical and mental health.

Fortunately, practicing a few gentle at-home exercises, on a regular basis, can help enhance strength, balance, and coordination decreasing the risk of falling. Best of all, caregivers and older adults can perform these moves together to safeguard their mobility and help reduce accidents.

TIGHTROPE WALK

Just like a tightrope walker in a circus, this exercise involves holding your arms straight out from your sides, parallel to the floor. With your arms out, walk in a straight line, pausing for one or two seconds each time you lift your back leg off the ground. Take between 15 and 20 steps this way. While walking, keep your head straight and look at a fixed spot in front of you to help maintain your balance.

HEEL-TOE WALK

ROCK THE BOAT

For this exercise, begin by placing your feet hip-width apart. Make sure that each foot feels like it’s pressing into the ground with the same amount of force. This will ensure that your weight is evenly distributed across both legs. With your shoulders back and head level, slowly transfer your weight to one side, lifting the opposite foot off of the ground a few inches. Hold your leg up for as long as you can, but no longer than 30 seconds. Then, slowly transfer your weight back onto both feet and repeat the process on the opposite side. Aim to repeat this process five times on each side, initially, and working up to more repetitions as your balance and strength improve.

This exercise involves placing one foot directly in front of the other, so that the heel of your front foot and the toes of your back foot are touching with each step. Depending on your level of flexibility, you may not be able to get your heels and toes to completely touch, but that’s okay. Just try to get them as close as you can without any discomfort. Take between 15-20 steps this way. As with the tightrope walk, keeping your eyes on a point in front of you will help you remain stable.

FLAMINGO STAND

This one is fairly simple. While holding onto the back of a chair for stability, stand on one leg with the other leg extended out in front of you a few inches from the ground. Start off standing on one leg for 10 seconds and then repeat on the other leg. Aim to repeat this on each leg 5-10 times. It’s important to maintain good posture keep your shoulders back, your back straight, and your head up while doing these exercises.

Some of these exercises may not work for everybody, but, remember, in time they will improve your balance, thus reducing the risk of a serious fall.

For kids entering 2nd - 6th grades in Fall 2026

Children will meet each day to prepare for a performance for friends and family at the end of the week. They will perform “A Not so Terrible Parable,” a musical in which Jesus’ well-known parable comes to life as a fun, over-the-top whodunit. Ms. Cheryl McClurg is back, again, as director for this camp.

Children will be provided with scripts, props, and costumes. They will bring their own lunch each day.

Elementary Mission Camp

July 13-17 | 9:30 am-3 pm

For kids entering 5th and 6th grade

In this hands-on camp, we will explore three specific types of mission: inner-church mission, urban mission, and rural mission. Each child will have a chance to experience different types of work, hopefully creating an appetite for missional work. Some days we will make our lunches here at church, and other days we will explore some Memphis eateries. We will finish each day with some seriously fun games and fellowship.

Germantown United Methodist Preschool

We’re thrilled to announce that the second semester is off to a fantastic start at GUMP! Our current families have successfully completed the reenrollment process for the 2026/2027 school year, and we are now accepting applications from GUMC families, as well as members of our local community. If you, or someone you know, is interested in joining our preschool, please contact our office at 901-753-3109. As part of the enrollment process, parents and their child will attend a meet and greet, where families can explore what makes GUMP special and determine if we’re the right fit.

This month, our classes will begin an exciting unit called “Matters of the Heart.” GUMP teachers will be engaging students in discussions about community helpers and the important roles they play in keeping our community safe and healthy. Our dramatic play areas are transformed into interactive spaces, such as restaurants, doctors’ offices, and veterinary clinics creating hands-on learning experiences that spark imagination and curiosity. To enrich this unit, we will invite real community helpers into the classroom to share their expertise and inspire our students.

February is the perfect time to focus on our hearts and learn how to keep them healthy. Throughout this month, our students will explore fun and age-appropriate activities that teach the importance of heart health, including nutritious eating, staying active, and showing kindness to others. Our friends also will have fun Valentine’s Day parties and exchange valentine cards. Our two-year-old and younger classes will celebrate a special event called “Treats with Someone Sweet.” Parents will be invited into their child’s classroom to share a sweet treat together, which will prove to be a memorable experience for families. It is a great way for parents to connect with their little ones and enjoy quality time in the classroom setting.

This month in chapel, Ms. Becca will discuss God’s love for us and how we share that love with others. We love, because He loved us. 1 John 4:19
