EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

1.

1.1. Introduction The German-Thai Chamber of Commerce (GTCC) in Bangkok is a member of the German Chambers of Commerce Worldwide Network (AHK), with 130 locations in over 90 countries. Since its establishment in Bangkok in 1962, the GTCC has maintained itself as a reliable intermediary between German and Thai businesses, thus contributing to the dynamism of the economic development in both countries.

In the course of 2016, GTCC put together almost 120 events and activities that encouraged further development and interaction of the German-Thai business community within Thailand and abroad. Thanks to the high level of dedication of the GTCC team, recognition of the Chamber in the business community was heightened enabling GTCC to constantly enjoyed opportunities to collaborate closely with various partners and counterparts, who added variety to the nature of GTCC services and activities.

1.2. Membership At the close of the fiscal year 2016, GTCC proudly maintained its position as the biggest bilateral European Chamber of Commerce in Thailand, with close to 600 active members, as a result of various tailored event platforms and insightful seminars during the year. GTCC activities brought in 72 new member companies to the German-Thai business community.

In order to facilitate members and establish a firm rapport in this business community, GTCC successfully introduced two new activities: the GTCC Young Professionals Programme and the GTCC e-UPDATE. The Young Professionals Programme provides a dynamic learning and networking platform for young professionals in the international business community in Thailand. The e-UPDATE, on the other hand, serve the business community with a summary of the latest information on GTCC events and updates on Thailand’s economic development, industr y sectors, investment, green technology, ASEAN growth and prospects, bilateral business relations as well as the major activities of GTCC members.

1.3. Consultancy services The Consultancy Services Department supports the entry of clients to the Thai, German and Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) markets through its various services that are flexible and tailor-made to suite specific needs.

Those services include market studies, market information, business research, business match-makings, technical workshops and technology conferences and the organisation of business delegations.

In order to suppor t the expor t activities of German SMEs, the German Federal Ministr y for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) as well as German Federal States offer various programmes. GTCC is actively involved in various programmes/initiatives (for example, the German Energy Solutions Initiative “energy solutions – made in Germany”).

The Consultancy Services Department plays a vital role in supporting German companies from various industries in gaining first-hand experience of the Thai market, thus paving the way for potential future business activities in Thailand as well as in the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC).

1.4. Trade fairs GTCC is the official representative of leading German trade fair companies with excellent reputations world-wide, including Messe Berlin GmbH, Deutsche Messe AG, Messe München GmbH, Nür nber gMesse GmbH and Spielwarenmesse eG. In order to ensure smooth and successful participation in German trade fairs, GTCC offers comprehensive services and provides a one-stop service for Thai companies. Moreover, GTCC acts as the link between Thailand and events in Asia that are organised by German trade fair companies. GTCC also organises comprehensive business delegation packages to trade fairs in Germany, including factory visits and B2B meetings. GTCC not only plays a vital role in German trade fair consultancy, it also enhances business opportunities in the European Union market.

1.5. German-Thai Dual Excellence Education German-Thai Dual Excellence Education (GTDEE) is the co-ordination office for higher vocational education based on German quality standards in the “Students Apprenticeship Programme”, and is operated by GTCC . The GTDEE Programme is a two-year vocational programme during which the students spend less than 50 per cent of the time at a vocational college and at least 50 per cent in a company.

The GTDEE Department acts as the centre, providing GTCC member companies and colleges with all types of required support throughout the programme.

GTDEE is part of the VETnet project (Vocational Education and Training Network) funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and supported by the Association of German Chambers of Industry and Commerce (DIHK). Similar vocational training projects are being implemented by the German Chambers of Commerce in Brazil, China, Greece, Italy, Latvia, Por tugal, the Russian Federation, Slovakia and Spain. GTDEE is further supported by the Ministry of Education of Thailand.

GTCC recorded yet another eventful year in 2016 with more than 120 events and activities, some of which resulted from engaging in partnerships with counterparts and leading international organisations. A selection of the highlights is listed below.

2.1. Special events 2.1.1. Asia-Pacific Co-ordination meeting The AHK Asia Pacific Co-ordination Meeting took place between 24 and 26 January. All AHK Executive Directors from the Asia-Pacific Region convened in Bangkok to strengthen their co-operation and prepare for the Asia-Pacific Conference 2016 in Hong Kong. On the night of 25 January, the AHK Directors were invited and welcomed by H. E. Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Thailand, Mr. Peter Prügel at his residence inside the German Embassy in Bangkok.

2.1.2. Meeting with the Prime Minister of Thailand The German-Thai Chamber of Commerce (GTCC), in co-operation with the German Embassy in Bangkok, organised a meeting with H.E. Prime Minister of Thailand, Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha on 27 May 2016, at Government House. During the meeting, the group of high-ranking representatives from the German-Thai business community had an opportunity to present their respective business sectors as well as express their concern and expectations vis-à-vis the Royal Thai Government.

2.1.3. Business meetings with Dr. Eckhard Franz A GTCC Business Luncheon “Thailand and Germany — Partners in Europe and Asia” with Dr. Eckhard Franz, DirectorGeneral, “External Economic Policy”, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, was organised on 1 June at the Anantara Siam Bangkok Hotel. The luncheon was attended by the German Ambassador to Thailand, Mr. Peter Prügel,

leaders. They also attended a bilateral meeting to discuss

Thailand’s trade policy with Ms. Chutima Bunyapraphasara,

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce, and

Ms. Sirinart Chaimun, Director-General of the Department

of Trade Negotiations, Ministry of Commerce. On 2 June

2016, they discussed topics of interest and key concerns at

a bilateral economic consultation meeting with Mr. Songphol

Sukchan, Director-General of the Department of European

Affairs, together with several government officials representing

Thailand’s Ministry of Commerce, Ministry of Education, and

Ministry of Science and Technology.

2.1.4. Joint Chambers BOI luncheon GTCC and joint foreign chambers co-organised a luncheon presentation on the new Board of Investment of Thailand (BOI) investment policy at Grand Hyatt Erawan Hotel on 1 March 2016. Ms. Duangjai Asawachintachit, Deputy Secretary-General of BOI gave a detailed presentation to more than 200 guests. She focused on the national Seven-Year Investment Promotion

Promotion Cr iter ia and Activities” for

overcoming the “middle income trap” and

achieving sustainable growth.

2.1.5. Exclusive business highlight myanmar event GTCC, in co-operation with the other bilateral German chambers in the ASEAN region, organised “Exclusive Business Highlight Myanmar” for a meeting with Dr. Monika Staerk, Delegate of German Industry and Commerce in Myanmar, on 26 July 2016 at Holiday Inn Bangkok Silom. The event was very well received and attended by more than 50 GTCC members and non-members.

2.1.6. Young Professionals networking evening GTCC successfully launched its “Young Professionals” programme on 31 August 2016, with a special speech by Mr. Vee Charununsiri, Head of GrabCar, Thailand, on “New business models in the digital world: How can startups compete?” More than 200 young businesspersons participated in the event at The Capitol by Water Library. The programme is aimed at providing a dynamic learning and networking platform for young professionals in the international business community in Thailand. 2.1.7. Thai-German Industry 4.0 Symposium This exclusive GTCC high-level event on the theme of “The future of smart manufacturing/technology solutions for Thailand” was held in Bangkok on 5 October 2016. German and Thai industry representatives as well as manufacturing companies/ experts exchanged viewpoints and presented their latest product and technology solutions. With the participation of more than 150 guests, the event featured globally-renowned and leading German companies/institutions: SIEMENS, Mercedes-Benz, Robert Bosch, SAP, KUKA, Trumpf Werkzeugmaschinen GmbH & Co. KG, Tüv Süd and Fraunhofer Institute, with the Keynote Address being delivered by Mr. Chen Namchaisiri, Chairman, The Federation of Thai Industries (F TI).

2.1.8. Joint Chamber luncheon with the Thai Prime Minister GTCC, in co-operation with the Joint Foreign Chambers of Commerce in Thailand (JFCCT), hosted a joint chamber luncheon on 25 November 2016 at the Shangri-La Hotel, Bangkok, during which Thailand’s Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha gave an address on “Open for business: The next chapter in Thailand’s competitiveness”.

2.2. Membership activities In 2016, GTCC identified valuable topics for discussion and hosted various breakfast talks, luncheons and seminars with leading partners that supported the interests of its members.

2.2.1. Ice Breaker Networking: Thailand Business Briefing GTCC’s featured networking event “The Ice Breaker” took place on 18 February at Chatrium Hotel Riverside Bangkok with the theme “Thailand Business Briefing”. At the networking event, an insightful presentation on “Thailand’s Economy 2016: Challenges and Oppor tunities” was shared by Ms. Piyakanit Yen-Ura, Senior Representative, Commerzbank AG, and followed with the results of GTCC Business Survey at the beginning of 2016 by Dr. Roland Wein, Executive Director of GTCC.

2.2.2. Human resources seminar: How do you measure candidates’ intelligence?

GTCC hosted a seminar entitled “How do you measure candidates’ intelligence?” on 26 April 2016, at the Holiday Inn Bangkok Silom. Attended by more than 30 human resources professionals, the event’s key speaker was Tom Sorensen, partner at Grant Thornton Services, who provided informative insights in HR practices.

2.2.3. “GTCC meets the German Ambassador” GTCC hosted its first “GTCC meets the German Ambassador” themed luncheon, with the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Thailand, H.E. Mr. Peter Prügel, as the speaker, on 13 September 2016 at the Anantara Siam Bangkok Hotel. Ambassador Prügel gave a speech on “Germany and the EU in South-East Asia: Our policy towards Thailand and ASEAN” to more than 60 participating GTCC members.

2.3. Consultancy services 2.3.1. Consulting Day “Cambodia”, in Bangkok at the GTCC office On 15 January 2016 GTCC, in co-operation with the European Chamber of Commerce in Cambodia (EuroCham), organised a briefing session and individual consulting appointments at the GTCC office on 15 January 2016 to provide information on business and investment oppor tunities in Cambodia.

Cambodia is recording high GDP growth rates with plenty of untapped potential for Thailand to expand business relations, while the ASEAN Economic Community is expected to boost regional trade between Cambodia and Thailand.

Participating entrepreneurs had the opportunity to discuss related matters with Ms. Ratana Phurik-Callebaut (Executive Director, European Chamber of Commerce in Cambodia) in order to learn first-hand how to do business in this emerging market as well as gain insights on industry-specific topics.

2.3.2. Asia-Pacific Briefing – German Energy Solutions Initiative On 21 and 22 January 2016, GTCC and DIHK organised intensive network internal briefing sessions on German energy solutions in Bangkok under the theme of “energy solutions – made in Germany”.

2.3.3. Innovation seminars on “Energy efficiency in buildings” GTCC organised a seminar series that focused on Green Energy Solutions for buildings at selected leading universities in Thailand from 1 to 5 February. The sessions served as a platform for sector-specific exchanges. A total of four seminars took place at The Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), The Joint Graduate School of Energy and Environment (JGSEE), Chulalongkorn University & Kasetsart University drawing an audience of more than 220 participants.

2.3.4. Business delegation visit to Cambodia 2016 GTCC, in co-operation with the European Chamber of Commerce in Cambodia (EuroCham), organised an exclusive business delegation visit to Cambodia (Phnom Penh) from 24 to 26 February. The GTCC Executive Director, Dr. Roland Wein welcomed a total of eight participants in the business trip that provided the participants with an up-to-date overview of the economy in Cambodia and various platforms to establish sustainable business opportunities. The trip was highlighted by a meeting with the Council for the Development of Cambodia. The meeting was hosted by H.E Mr. Sok Chenda Sophea, Minister attached to the Office of the Prime Minister and Secretary-General of the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC). The trip included several factory visits as well as a visit to Phnom Penh Special Economic Zone (PPSEZ).

2.3.5. Exclusive business and study trip to HANNOVER MESSE 2016 and automation industry sites GTCC organised an exclusive business and study trip to HANNOVER MESSE 2016 as well as visits to leading German automation industry sites from 24 April to 1 May 2016. The site visits, organised during 28 and 29 April, enabled more than 30 Thai delegates to gain useful first-hand insights and experiences of the operations of SIEMENS, KUKA, Wieland Electric GmbH and FESTO AG and Co. KG.

2.3.6. Business and study trip on “Energy efficiency in infrastructure sector/smart grids/electric vehicles” in Stuttgart and Munich GTCC in cooperation with bw-i/OAV organised a business and study trip to Germany (Frankfurt, Stuttgart and Munich) on “smart grid, electric vehicles and energy efficiency in the infrastructure sector” from 20 to 24 June 2016. More than 10 selected participants actively joined the delegation trip supported by the German Energy Solutions Initiative (BMWi).

The trip featured visits to Fraport AG, Fraunhofer IAO, Netze BW GmbH/ EnBW AG, ZVEI e.V., Stadtwerke Augsburg Verkehrs-GmbH, Forschungsstelle für Energiewirtschaft e. V. & INTERSOLAR Europe in Munich.

2.3.7. Exclusive business and study trip to Germany on the topic of “Industry 4.0 and Electric Vehicles” GTCC in cooperation with NSTDA organised a high-level business delegation from 11 to 18 October 2016 to the Motek international trade fair in Stuttgart as well as site visits to SIEMENS (“Digital Factory”), FANUC, Mercedes-Benz, Rober t Bosch, BMW and Tüv Süd, with a key focus on Industry 4.0 products and technology solutions and EVs.

2.3.8. Study trip to K 2016 and exclusive rubber and plastics industry site visits in Germany Organised from 16 to 23 October 2016 by GTCC, the delegation trip featured a three-day visit to the world’s premier fair for the plastics and rubber industry K 2016, as well as site visits to Evonik Industries AG, Covestro AG, Harburg-Freuden berger Maschinenbau GmbH and the Institute for Plastics Processing (IKV) at RWTH Aachen University.

2.4. Trade fairs 2.4.1. Messe Berlin: ITB Berlin ITB Berlin 2016 is by far the world’s largest meeting place of international tourism policy decision-makers and business leaders. From 9 to 13 March, some 10,000 exhibiting companies from 187 countries and regions met with 120,000 trade visitors (39 per cent were from abroad) in the 26 exhibition halls. The event, which marked the fiftieth anniversary of ITB Berlin, was stronger than ever as it attracted the largest number of trade visitors since it was launched in 1966.

Covering 1,712 m2 of exhibition space, 185 Thai exhibitors – including major tourism organisations and associations from Bangkok, Pattaya, Koh Samui, Krabi, Phang-Nga, Phuket and Prachuap Khiri Khan as well as the Tourism Authority of Thailand – also presented the “amazing tourism products of Thailand” for the forty-second time with the aim of enhancing the image of Thailand as a “Quality Leisure Destination through Thainess”.

2.4.2. Chillventa 2016 Following three exceptionally successful days with significant growth in the display area and visitor numbers, Chillventa 2016 closed its doors. The event again put its best foot forward. Trade visitors were up 5 per cent over 2014, at a total of 32,206).

As in previous years, exhibitor numbers remained high, with a total of 982 companies participating. The growth in display area was particularly impressive, having increased by 13 per cent compared with the previous event. On the day before the trade fair, the Chillventa Congress impressed the professional community of 260 delegates and presenters from 31 countries with its high-calibre programme and first-class speakers from all over the world.

With co-operation between Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP) and Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Industry Club of The Federation of Thai Industries, the Thailand Pavilion showcased outstanding products from 10 Thai companies and connected the RHVAC industry from Thailand with the global market.

The next Chillventa will be organised in 2018 from 16 to 18 of October.

2.4.3. Deutsche Messe: HANNOVER MESSE The world’s leading trade fair for industrial technology ran from 25 to 29 April 2016 in Hannover, Germany. HANNOVER MESSE 2016 featured five parallel shows – industrial automation; energy; digital factory; industrial supply; and research and technology. Major emphasis was placed on the topics of industry automation and IT, energy and environmental engineering, innovative subcontracting solutions, and research and development.

With its keynote theme of “Integrated industry – Discover solutions” and the United States of America as its official Partner Country, the 2016 event reverberated around the world. It attracted more than 190,000 visitors (up from 175,000 in 2014) who were intent on future-proofing their operations and investing in state-of-the-art technology. More than 50,000 of the visitors came from abroad – an increase of some 25 per cent over 2014.

The German-Thai Chamber of Commerce organised an exclusive business and study trip for 31 Thai delegates to HANNOVER MESSE 2016 and automation industry site visits during 28 and 29 April 2016 to SIEMENS, Wieland Electric GmbH, KUKA and FESTO. The objective was to create value for the participants by combining visits to HANNOVER MESSE and leading German industrial automation companies, in order for them to gain first-hand insights and experiences.

The BOI supports the Thailand Pavilion at HANNOVER MESSE. The next HANNOVER MESSE will be staged from 24 to 28 April 2017, with Poland featured as the official Partner Country.

2.4.4. Messe München GmbH: bauma Munich 2016 31st edition of the World’s Leading Trade Fair for Construction Machinery, Building Material Machines, Mining Machines, Construction Vehicles and Construction Equipment is top of the class. bauma Munich 2016 attracted around 580,000 visitors from 200 countries to Munich between April 11 and 17. That’s a rise of more than nine percent. After Germany, the top ten countries of origin among the visitors were Austria, Switzerland, Italy, France, the Netherlands, UK, Sweden, the Russian Federation, Poland and the Czech Republic. A total of 3,423 exhibitors —1,263 from Germany and 2,160 from abroad—from 58 countries presented their products, developments and innovations on a record 605,000 square meters of exhibition space. Exhibitors from outside Germany accounted for 63 percent of the total—higher than ever before.

In 2016, GTCC organized business delegation trip to Munich, Germany to visit bauma 2016, the world’s leading Trade Fair for Construction, Building Material and Mining Machines and Construction Vehicles and Equipment sets future trends during 10-15 April 2016 with total 43 participants. The business delegates also visited BAUER Maschinen GmbH, which designs and manufactures rotary drilling rigs, diaphragm wall equipment and all related tools.

The next bauma takes place from April 8 to 14, 2019 in Munich.

2.4.5. Spielwarenmesse Dialogue 2016 GTCC, in co-operation with Spielwarenmesse eG, organised the Spielwarenmesse Dialogue 2016 Press Conference at The Peninsula Hotel Bangkok to promote Spielwarenmesse 2017, the world’s largest and leading toy trade fair, which will take place from 1 to 6 February 2017 in Nuremberg Germany.

2.5. German-Thai Dual Excellence Education (GTDEE) 2.5.1. Memorandum of Understanding signing ceremony with AAPICO Hitech PCL GTCC, represented by Mr. Marius Mehner, Deputy Executive Director and Head of Consultancy Services, and Mr. Philipp Dreher, Project Director of the GTDEE Programme, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with AAPICO Hitech Public Company Limited, which was represented by Mr. Yeap Swee Chuan, President and CEO, and Ms. Lalana Kaswiboon, Training Assistant Section Manager, at the German-Thai Chamber of Commerce office on 27 January 2016.

2.5.2. Dual Vocational Education Exhibition

On 29-30 January 2016, GTDEE exhibited at the Dual Vocational Education Exhibition organised by the Office of Dual Vocational Education Commission (OVEC) at Impact Muang Thong Thani Convention Centre. Prime Minister Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha presided over the event. The GTDEE booth showcased collaboration with company partners Mitrphol, BMW (Thailand), Wangnoi Beverage and Amata B.Grimm Power 1 & 2. Mr. Phongsakdi Chakshuvej, President of German-Thai Chamber of Commerce, Gen. Surachet Chaiwong, Deputy Minister of Education, and Dr. Chaiyapruek Sereerak, Secretary-General of OVEC visited GTDEE booth and held discussions with the companies’ representatives and the apprentices.

2.5.3. Amata B.Grimm Power final examination and graduation GTDEE organised the final examination for the 2014 batch of apprentices of the Amata B.Grimm Power Apprenticeship Programme under the German standard at King Mongkut’s University of Technology North Bangkok (KMUTNB) on 29 March 2016. Eight electric power students from Chonburi Technical College took the examination adjudicated by seven examination board members from Chonburi Technical College, Amata B.Grimm Power, KMUTNB and GTCC. On 29 April 2016, GTCC Executive Director Dr. Roland Wein presented GTCC certificates to the students, five of whom passed both theoretical and practical examinations based on the German standard.

2.5.4. Graduation ceremony for Mercedes-Benz automotive mechatronics technicians As part of the GTDEE project, Mercedes-Benz (Thailand) organised a graduation ceremony for its apprentices in the Automotive Mechatronics Technician (AMT) programme on 6 July 2016.

Mr. Michael Grewe, President and CEO of Mercedes-Benz (Thailand), together with Dr. Roland Wein, GTCC Executive Director, congratulated the apprentices on their graduation. Mr. Grewe stressed the importance of access to education in which Mercedes had invested for the students as well as the company’s effor ts to ensure continuous improvement of education.

Dr. Wein pointed out that the success of dual vocational education can only be achieved with strong collaboration between the companies and colleges. The apprentices shared the impressions of their experiences during their training. They stressed that they were proud to be part of AMT and that they would continue to develop themselves in order to reach their career goals.

2.5.5. GTDEE follow-up conference: Looking to the future GTDEE successfully organised its first International Conference on Dual Vocational Education and Training (DVET) on 8 September 2016. In co-operation with VETnet, a joint project comprising several AHKs around the world, that is seeking to implement the dual vocational system in a number of countries, GTDEE welcomed the international delegations to the conference at the Crown Plaza Bangkok Lumpini Park. The conference summarised and clustered the achievements, expectations, challenges and goals of the different parties involved in the implementation of DVET in Thailand after three years of GTDEE operation. More than 160 participants, who included key representatives from the Government of Thailand, companies and educational institutions, joined the conference to exchange related experience gained during the past three years.

3.1. General tasks The general tasks that are the responsibility of the Executive Director’s office include: General management of the Chamber; Maintaining close co-ordination with the GTCC Board of Directors; Representing GTCC at functions and conferences, delivering speeches and making presentations; Engagement with DIHK and AHK Committees; Arranging and co-ordinating GTCC cluster meetings, membership affairs, media, trade delegations and visiting German companies, trade fair representation (together with the relevant managers); Finance/personnel; Liaising with government authorities in Germany and Thailand; Liaising with Business Associations/Chambers of Industry and Commerce in Germany and Thailand.

German-ASEAN Business Council (GABC) The German Chambers of Commerce and Industry in Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam established the German-ASEAN Chamber Network to provide a dialogue platform, strengthen regional co-operation and support regional trade and investment. The German-ASEAN Chamber Network has been developed into the German-ASEAN Business Council in order to better provide instruments to: • Exchange information between businesses and Chambers to improve the institutional representation and, ultimately,

institutional support from Chambers to businesses • Formulate joint positions on issues concerning ASEAN trade and investment in order to enable companies to adjust

their business rationale to current policy thinking of ASEAN key stakeholders as well as expected changes in ASEAN’s

trade and investment climate.

• Enable ASEAN policy-makers to identify bottlenecks of strategic importance for the implementation of the AEC

Blueprint, including economic policies influencing ASEAN’s trade and investment climate; The Executive Director presented the ASEAN market and its growth potential to German companies interested in expanding to ASEAN at the following events:

3.4. Steering Committee The Executive Director headed one GTDEE Steering Committee in 2016 as follows: • 9 June 2016 The GTDEE team reported to the Steering Committee regarding its VETnet Project 2.0, GTDEE occupational sectors, the new certification criteria from Germany (Product Category A-C), introduction of the School Assessment Programme under GTDEE (DVQD), introduction of the Meister programme for KMUTNB, and examination results in 2016. As for the committee election 2016, all committees agreed to use the majority of votes instead of the election of Chairman and Deputy.

The Executive Director represented GTDEE on various occasions with partners and external parties. He also took part in the GTDEE Follow-up Conference on Dual Vocational Education and Training (DVET) on 8 September 2016.

3.5. Cooperation, project activities and meetings In 2016, the Executive Director participated in more than 200 meetings with member companies and counterparts of various business communities to discuss joint initiatives and to exchange views.

3.6. Staff activities Team outing The Chamber organised a Team Outing for staff during 10 and 11 June 2016 at Hua Hin Marriott Resort & Spa, enabling staff members to socialise and strengthen their relationship outside of their working sphere. The outing included team-building activities as well as visits to leisure attractions.

GTCC Workshop on “High Performance Team Training” A “High Performance Team Training” workshop for GTCC staff was organised from 22 to 23 September 2016 at the Plaza Bangkok Maenam Riverside with Martin Thisted, Trainer from Key Learning A/S, Denmark.

During the workshop, management and all staff conducted brainstorming sessions and on the commitments for activities to enhance team performance. To work as a high-performance team together, GTCC Executive Director Dr. Roland Wein and staff set their common goal for the year 2017: 4C - Communication, Cooperation, Competence and Change.

GTCC staff Christmas dinner The Chamber hosted a staff party on 16 December 2016 at the Marriott Bangkok Sukhumvit. The event was organised to give special thanks to the GTCC staff for their productive and fruitful contributions to the work of the Chamber. In addition, some activities were arranged to strengthen staff relations and everyone went home with gifts from colleagues.

4.1. Membership As the biggest bilateral European Chamber of Commerce in Thailand, GTCC is well positioned to offer the highest levels of effectiveness and tailor-made services to its members.

A strong commitment to constantly increase its activities has been demonstrated. The introduction of the e-UPDATE during 2016 has proved to be another successful channel for helping to enhance knowledge of business updates as well as close connection between the Chamber and its members.

GTCC is facing the challenge to remain relevant for its members in the presence of growing online venues and social media. Making the Chamber increasingly visible and even closer to its members and the public has always been our goal. During 2016, the framework for electronic communications and membership activities was developed. The introduction of the e-UPDATE during 2016 has proved to be another successful channel for helping to enhance knowledge of business updates as well as close connection between the Chamber and its members. The launch of a new website in mid-2017, which will be highly proficient and available on hand-held devices, is anticipated. In addition, many other carefully planned activities will be unveiled in 2017.

The Chamber’s most important resource are its members – small and medium sized and globally successful companies in Thailand and Germany.

By the end of 2016 GTCC membership totalled 570, a decrease of 2 per cent compared with the end-of-year total of 580 in 2015. The Chamber’s gain of 72 new members comprised 51 ordinary members, 1 associate member in Thailand, 11 associate members in Germany and other countries, and 9 personal members. GTCC is carefully monitoring membership development and is working to identify and develop programmes to improve membership acquisition. New services and interesting activities have been consistently introduced to improve members experience and satisfaction. The GTCC YP was launched to enhance the prospect pool. The new members and new representative orientation programme is organized regularly to promote the member engagement.

4.2. 4.2.7. Annual events Following the passing of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej on 13 October, the Cabinet of Thailand asked the public not to hold any “entertainment activities” for at least one month, followed by a 100-day mourning period. GTCC therefore cancelled 2 annual events, Oktoberfest and the Christmas Party, which were planned to be held on 28 October and 15 December, respectively.

Ordinary General Meeting The GTCC held its Ordinary General Meeting 2016 on 17 March at the Shangri-la Hotel Bangkok. The chamber congratulated the new Board of Directors for 2016/2017, especially Mr. Phongsakdi Chakshuvej, Executive Vice-President of B.Grimm and Co., Ltd. and Dr. Florian Kirschner, Managing Director of Evonik (Thailand) Ltd., who were both re-elected as GTCC President and GTCC Vice-President, respectively.

GTCC also bid farewell to six outgoing directors: Mr. Pracha Chivapornthip, VIV Interchem Co., Ltd.; Mr. Marcus Magiar, Carl Zeiss (Thailand) Co., Ltd.; Mr. Andreas Richter, Blumental Richter & Sumet Co., Ltd.; Mr. Helmut Beste, Thaivivat Insurance Public Co., Ltd.; Mr. Keerin Chutumstid, Linde (Thailand) Co., Ltd.; and Mr. Michael Berger, InterGest (Thailand) Ltd. GTCC Gala Night 2016: A Night Out on Mainau GTCC hosted its annual Gala Night on 3 June with the theme of “A Night Out on Mainau” at the Shangri-La Hotel, Bangkok, during which more than 400 distinguished guests were welcomed from the German-Thai business community. This splendid event provided a unique opportunity for corporate executives to meet and socialise with business counterparts in a relaxed and convivial atmosphere. The fund of 143,000 baht was raised at the Gala Night for underprivileged children of Yaowawit School in Phang-nga province.

4.3. Communications and publications 4.3.1. UPDATE magazine In 2016, UPDATE magazine was improved in terms of layout design to make it more appealing to readers. All GTCC members are entitled to receive a copy of UPDATE on a complimentary basis. This quarterly magazine features major trends in various industries, especially in Thailand. It contains several sections: a special focus; Chamber activities; GTDEE Insight; Business Briefs; Members’ Corner; and Trade Fairs. The focus of the magazine during 2016 included the tourism industry, energy efficiency, Bangkok Megacity and Industry 4.0.

In addition to the members’ network, UPDATE is distributed to embassies, consulates and foreign chambers of commerce in Thailand, German Chambers of Commerce and Industry in Germany, Industry Clubs under the Federation of Thai Industries, selected universities in Thailand as well as at all GTCC events.

With a circulation of two thousand copies per issue among all GTCC contacts in Thailand and overseas, the magazine provides a valuable opportunity for interested companies to reach out to potential clients via available advertising options.

Also archived online, the magazine is accessible to a greater number of readers locally and internationally.

4.3.2. Handbook and Directory 2016 The GTCC Handbook and Directory is published once a year and distributed to all members on a complimentary basis. It provides information on the structure, responsibility and services of the Chamber. In addition, essential information regarding doing business in Thailand is included. Most importantly, the publication offers members’ profiles and contact details in order to facilitate business interaction among the members of the German and Thai business communities. Chamber members also have an opportunity to advertise their products and services next to their company profile or elsewhere in the publication, in order to enhance corporate brand and visibility. New format providing more insights into the company members e.g. their production sites, number of employees and branches in Thailand, were added to the Handbook and Directory.

4.3.3. e-UPDATE GTCC launched an email newsletter named “e-UPDATE” on 16 August 2016. This bi-weekly e-newsletter summarises the latest information on GTCC events and updates on Thailand’s economic development, industry sectors, investment, green technology, ASEAN growth and prospects, bilateral business relations as well as the major activities of GTCC members.

It is provided to more than 3,000 subscribers, mainly comprising executives of German and Thai companies operating in Thailand, trade/academic institutions, embassies, other foreign chambers of commerce in Thailand as well as counterparts in Germany.

4.3.4. GTCC Upcoming Events GTCC Upcoming Events, another electronic newsletter issued by the Chamber, is sent to members and friends of the Chamber every Wednesday. It informs readers of upcoming events that the Chamber is organising or in which it is involved.

4.3.5. ASEAN Newsletter Starting in August 2016, GTCC contributes current news and past activities relevant to the German and Thai business communities as well as the development of business and investment in ASEAN, to the German-ASEAN Business Council’s quarterly newsletter entitled ASEAN Newsletter.

5.1. Projects In 2016, the Consultancy Services Department organised a wide range of target-group specific projects, business delegations, events and technical workshops that were aimed at promoting bilateral trade relations between Thailand and Germany as well as trade with the entire ASEAN region. In addition, activities/projects under the framework of the German-ASEAN Business Council (GABL) were supported.

5.2.1. Address research and market information Throughout 2016, the Consultancy Services Department supported Thai and German companies in establishing business contacts by offering and delivering its popular address research service. Within the scope of this service, the department selected potential business partners in line with clients’ requirements and delivered verified, accountable and up-to-date contact details.

5.2.2. Business matching For a more advanced, in-depth and value-added partner search services, the Consultancy Services Department offers German and Thai clients its widely sought-after business matching service. The service includes organising individual target group meetings with potential business partners, government officials and associations, which are pre-selected in accordance with clients’ requirements. If initial interest is shown in co-operation with a client company, contact will be established and follow-up activities planned.

5.2.3. Technical workshops The Consultancy Services Department organises technical workshops for potential business customers in order to support the positioning of client companies in the target market. It also invites target group-specific participants and organises the relevant venues for the workshops as well as technical equipment. This service acts as an ideal platform for companies looking to expand their current customer base and foster long-term relationships with existing clients.

5.2.4. Translation, interpretation and certification services During 2016, GTCC again received a large number of translation orders. Cer tification of BIO cer tificates, BRC food certificates as well as certificates for hygiene standards, international food standards (IFS), registration, subsidiaries, global standards for food safety and quality management system (ISO) were prepared for various companies.

5.3. Other DEinternational activities Staff of the Consultancy Services Department actively supported and undertook the following activities: Meetings with numerous company representatives from various industry sectors for business advisory and consulting purposes regarding Thailand and Germany as strategic business locations and hubs; Supporting activities of the German-ASEAN Business Council (GABL); Fostering the relationship with partners in Cambodia and the Lao People’s Democratic Republic; Organising events hosted by the GTCC; Organising technical workshops, seminars and trade fairs.

Delegation trip – German organic supply chain in co-operation with the Thai Organic Trade Association (TOTA) On 8 February 2016 GTCC, in co-operation with the Thai Organic Trade Association (TOTA), successfully organised business and study site visits on the topic of “German organic supply chain” within the framework of the trade fair BIOFACH 2016, Nuremberg. The delegates visited “Biohof Joas, an organic model farm with a 60-kW biogas plant, “Weingut Rothe” an organic certified vineyard and winery, and “ebl-naturkost” a supermarket for organic products.

6.2.2. Exclusive business and study trip to HANNOVER MESSE 2016 and automation industry, Hannover, Germany GTCC organised an exclusive business and study trip to HANNOVER MESSE 2016 together with automation industry site visits during 28-29 April 2016. Thirty-one Thai delegates visited SIEMENS, Wieland Electric GmbH, KUKA and FESTO. The aim was to create value for the par ticipants to gain first-hand insights and experience by combining the visits to HANNOVER MESSE and leading German industrial automation companies.

6.2.3. Business delegation and factory visit to bauma 2016, Munich, Germany

GTCC organised a visit by a business delegation, from 10 to 15 April 2016, to Munich, Germany to visit bauma 2016, the world’s leading trade fair for construction, building materials, mining machinery, and construction vehicles and equipment that will set future trends. The delegation, which comprised 43 participants, also visited BAUER Maschinen GmbH, which designs and manufactures rotary drilling rigs, diaphragm wall equipment and all related tools.

6.2.4. Exclusive bauma China Business Delegation 2016, Shanghai, China GTCC successfully organised an exclusive visit by a 15-member delegation to bauma China 2016, the international trade fair for construction machinery, building material machines, mining machines and construction vehicles from 21 to 24 November 2016.

7.

7.2. GTDEE service portfolio GTDEE has established a set of services for all participating par tners to ensure sustainable implementation of Dual Vocational Education and Training (DVET) in several areas.

To ensure dual training on a permanently high level, companies, colleges and students interested in the GTDEE programme must go through several assessments to screen their competence status. Therefore, GTDEE has developed a selection procedure for companies, colleges and students.

A company or college that provides “dual training” must fulfill certain requirements regarding the suitability of the training premises. A quality analysis system (DVQD) developed by GTDEE and BUSEM (Bangkok University School of Entrepreneurship and Management) identifies gaps in several areas, i.e., internal management, infrastructure and methods of teaching. After the identification of the gaps, GTDEE consults on all issues in DVET by advising, on curricula or training plan development or by conducting different types of technical workshops and seminars. In order to enhance a collaborative exchange between the co-operating partners, GTDEE has developed a set of E-Services to exchange relevant information between teachers and trainers, or for using E-Learning software for relevant training issues in technical professions. The objective of the examinations provided by GTDEE is to ensure a comparable nationwide standard in theoretical and practical examinations that will be certified by the German-Thai Chamber of Commerce.

7.3. Activities planned for 2017 Since education is a continuous development process, GTDEE will continue to work on refining dual standards in Thailand, with the goal of sustainability in order to push Thailand towards becoming the hub in ASEAN as follow: 1. Start-up the dual vocational education in German system in level “A” in Automotive Mechatronics at Mercedes-Benz (Thailand) and BMW Thailand; 2. GTDEE Examination for 216 apprentices, batch 2015 from 10 company partners (certified by GTCC); 3. Interim examination in automotive mechatronics for Mercedes-Benz Apprenticeship Programme 2016 and BMW Service Apprentice Program 2016 UNDER “PAL” in Germany; 4. Trainer Workshop for GTDEE Examination; 5. Teacher Workshop for GTDEE Examination; 6. Development of Examiner Board for the Centralised Examination Workshop for GTDEE Examination; 7. School assessment, development and establishment of a quality management system for vocational schools; 8. Development of AdA International Programme (Ausbildung der Ausbilder) ; 9. Development of a guidebook on “Dual Training”; 10. Development of the vocational training committee and working groups; 11. Consulting on education and training, such as curricula and training plan development, examination and assessment, essentials of dual education etc.; 12. German educational trainings, workshops and assessment promotion to company partners such as train-the-trainer and quality assurance.
