I take pride in sharing the many successes of the Germanna community over the past year. Despite the enormous obstacles the pandemic set before us, we remain unwavering in our commitment to teaching and learning. With your support, we not only persevered but excelled in service to our students and our communities, when they needed us most.

After 16 months of operating remotely, we were so delighted to finally re-open our doors on July 12. While we are overjoyed to see everyone’s bright and smiling faces in person again, we plan to continue offering all of the successful online and remote services we developed during the pandemic. Every innovation that our faculty and staff created to keep our online doors open to all is only possible because of your dedication to our efforts. And that’s extraordinary. You are extraordinary.

Our shared commitment to excellence is proven in our continued ability to attract, retain, and graduate our students.

We are one of the few institutions, nationally, to see an increase in enrollment throughout the pandemic. Now that we’re online and on campus, we really are everywhere our students need us to be.

Our unique College Everywhere program provides students the opportunity to complete a two-year degree in just one year — completely online. I’m proud to share that College Everywhere offers the most Quality Matters certified courses — the industry standard in online learning — in the Virginia Community College System and is third internationally among all community colleges. Our College Everywhere students graduate at a 40% higher rate than traditional students. Starting this fall, we expanded our program offerings to include an accounting certificate and degrees

in business management and liberal arts.

The impact of the pandemic continues to affect our local economies. As a result, more and more of our students are coming to us with fewer resources. With your valued support, we use all available assets to provide our students with what they need to stay on the path to their own successful futures.

We remain steadfast in our commitment to equity and inclusion and we have taken great strides in implementing our bold Truth & Reconciliation Strategic Plan. Perhaps, our greatest stride is the establishment of the Office of Equity Advancement. This new office will ensure that we are a college that is rightfully open and welcoming to all.

Our designation as a Military Friendly School is special to me because my husband and two of my three children have served in the military. There is no greater honor than to serve those who would sacrifice so much in duty to our country.

As I think about the future of Germanna, we have more innovations ahead as we keep students and the communities we serve imperative in our minds and hearts. All of us at Germanna are so grateful for your generous support. Without you, none of our success is possible. With you, we break down barriers so that we might focus on success for ALL students.

TRUTH & RECONCILIATION STRATEGIC PLAN IN ACTION

Our new Office of Equity Advancement upholds Germanna’s responsibility to create, maintain, and nurture an academic and social environment that respects the diversity of people and ideas. Under the leadership of long-time educator Veronica Curry, the office collaborates with faculty and staff to advocate for student success and advance equity across the College. Ms. Curry serves as the primary liaison and key contact guiding the implementation of our Truth & Reconciliation Strategic Plan.

Our strategic plan implementation is well underway. Additional professional development and training have rolled out to all faculty and staff. In addition, the College is now providing mentorship opportunities to all students. We welcome Keyanna Hawkins, Coordinator of Equity Advancement, who serves as ombudsman, mediating equity issues for all students, faculty, and staff.

COLLEGE EVERYWHERE

NURSING STUDENTS MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Launched in fall 2020, our College Everywhere accelerated online degree programs quickly became popular with students. In just one year, we’ve seen a 76% growth in enrollment for our fast five-week courses. We celebrated our first group of College Everywhere graduates this past August.

As the pandemic impacted our local healthcare facilities, Dr. Patti Lisk, Dean of the Germanna’s Health Technologies Division and the largest Nursing Program in Virginia’s community colleges, spearheaded a unique collaboration with Mary Washington Healthcare. The partnership provided Germanna students the ability to complete their clinical requirements while providing additional support to the hospital during a critical time for our communities.

CARING IS THE FIRST STEP TO STUDENT SUCCESS

FROM ORANGE TO OXFORD

For students like Elysha Ellis, college can seem out of reach. Personal barriers such as financial need, lack of transportation, as well as food and housing insecurity can keep too many students from completing their degrees. Our Germanna Cares program offers our students the resources to tackle those needs. Your support helped Germanna Cares distribute over $90,000 of aid last year to 2,065 students who were negatively impacted during the pandemic. Germanna Cares works because you care.

We ease the transition to the demands of college life, allowing all students to strengthen their skills in a low-pressure environment close to home. Bryant Little found math and science challenging while attending Orange County High School and he credits Germanna with making him a better student. After graduating from Germanna, Mr. Little earned his Baccalaureate from George Mason University and is on his way to completing his Master’s Degree from England’s Oxford University.

CAMPUS SAFETY

TECHNOLOGY SUPPORT

Germanna’s Police Department plays a critical role in the success of our students.

Maintaining safety and security on campus and virtually is our number one priority.

Chief Craig Branch has led the department for 10 years and has over 25 years of law enforcement experience. He and his security team were among the first to be labeled as “essential personnel” at the start of the pandemic. Chief Branch takes pride in the professionalism displayed by his officers during a time of extreme adversity.

Daniel Buhrman, Manager of Technical Support Services, and his IT department had one of the biggest roles while Germanna operated remotely. They were charged with ensuring students, faculty, and staff had the necessary equipment and connectivity to learn and teach in a virtual environment.

Among their many accomplishments, Mr. Buhrman’s team created and maintained internet hotspots in our campus parking lots and made hundreds of laptops available to students in need.

Our community partnerships are essential to the success of our students in and out of the classroom.

Pantry pick-up days

FOOD PANTRY PICK-UP DAYS With the generous support of the Fredericksburg Food Bank, The Jenkins Donelson Foundation, and Mary Ball Woman’s Club, we were able to hold a series of pantry pick-up days to distribute food and hygiene items to our students and their families. In all, 500 students were each provided 30 pounds of goods that helped support 1,800 people during the pandemic.

These services continue today.

JACKIE ROBINSON SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS Through our partnership with the Fredericksburg Nationals, the second annual Jackie Robinson Scholarships were awarded to Barry Barker, Luke Dufiho, Lauren Mostowy, Calvin Richard, and Carmen Vivalva. Each winner received a $1,042 scholarship to Germanna courtesy of the Silber family and Fredericksburg Nationals. Held on June 19 in recognition of the Juneteenth holiday, scholarship winners were honored during a ceremony at the stadium.

GLADYS P. TODD ACADEMY The Gladys P. Todd Academy provides underserved students from the City of Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania County the opportunity to earn an associate degree and a high school diploma at the same time.

This year, 100% of Academy graduates were accepted at four-year schools. Academy graduate Noor Sharif received a full-ride scholarship to the University of Virginia.

GERMANNA SCHOLARSHIPS $805,968 worth of scholarships were provided to 976 students to help them achieve their educational goals. The Germanna Guarantee program proactively awards funds to break down the small barriers that make a big impact on keeping our students on a path to completion. Aid such as the Follett Scholarship have helped students like Grant Davis cover the cost of textbooks while attending Germanna.

As the College operated remotely, your continued support resulted in over one million dollars raised to support our students.

50TH ANNIVERSARY GALA FEBRUARY 27 Our first-ever virtual gala was held on February 27, 2021. The festive event brought us together online to celebrate the College’s 50th anniversary. Altogether, we raised an astounding $464,595 to support our students.

GERMANNA GIVE DAY OCTOBER 5 Our first Germanna Give Day was held on October 5, 2020. This virtual day of giving raised an amazing $557,265 which directly supports critical programs including the Gladys P. Todd Academy, Germanna Cares, and Germanna Guarantee. A huge thank you to all who participated during that special day.

mother, who supported him and his brother working shifts as an emergency room nurse in West Middlesex, Pennsylvania, as a single mom when Aric was seven.

“Mighty Margaret,” Wagner and his brother came to call their mom. “I hate to say we were poor,” he says. “My brother and I always ate.”

She never stopped taking care of them — and never stopped drilling the idea into them that college was the path to a better life.

Wagner went to Penn State and met a girl, fell in love and got married to Carol Ann Talley. They settled in her home of Spotsylvania County.

“We want to have the biggest impact, and Germanna does that.”

Aric Wagner’s 25-year-old son Christian graduated from Randolph Macon after attending Germanna. Germanna made a difference for Christian, as it does for so many local youth with disabilities, by helping him build the confidence to succeed at a four-year school.

His 22-year-old son Colin, a baseball player at Milligan University in Tennessee, took Germanna classes online while recuperating from surgery in Kent, Washington.

His 21-year-old son Seth is a junior at West Virginia University.

But it wasn’t Wagner’s sons who ignited his passion for supporting higher education — and Germanna in particular. It was his 22

Wagner heard Bruce Davis, the head of the Germanna Educational Foundation, talk about Germanna’s food pantries and the shocking number of students who suffer from food insecurity.

He also realized that a good number of Germanna students are single parents, like his own, trying to take care of their children and find a path to a better life at the same time.

“My wife and I don’t give just to make ourselves feel good,” he says. “We ask questions. We want to have the biggest impact, and Germanna does that.”

PAMELA BRIDGEWATER U.S. AMBASSADOR TO JAMAICA, GHANA, AND BENIN (RETIRED) presidency: “I always loved the news. I remember that the JFK presidency piqued my interest. I started following international affairs during his press conferences on the Cuban missile crisis.”

She earned two degrees in Political Science, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts from Virginia State University, and with a Master of Arts from the University of Cincinnati. She taught at Morgan State, Bowie State, and Voorhees College before entering the U.S. Foreign Service in 1980.

Ambassador Bridgewater’s overseas tours included Belgium, the Bahamas, and Jamaica. She served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs and was the first African American woman to serve as principal officer in Durban, South Africa. She was the longest-serving U.S. diplomat in South Africa at the end of apartheid.

At the height of the civil war in Liberia, she was named Special Coordinator for Peace in Liberia.

Under Presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama she served as U.S. Ambassador to Benin, Ghana, and Jamaica.

Retired U.S. Ambassador Pamela Bridgewater’s grandfather, Rev. Dr. B.H. Hester, pastor of the Shiloh Baptist Church (Old Site) from 1922-1961, was a social activist and Black newspaper editor.

Her father, Joe Bridgewater, was an American R&B trumpeter who played the Cotton Club and recorded with Ray Charles.

Her mother, Mary E. “Miss IB” Bridgewater, became a nurse’s aide at Mary Washington Hospital, working in the OBGYN department.

She later became the first Black teller at what was then the National Bank of Fredericksburg.

Ambassador Bridgewater says the house where she grew up on Amelia Street had always been “a home of activism and social responsibility,” but she didn’t give public affairs any thought as a career. “I didn’t know any of these things my grandfather had done,” she says. Her interest in political science developed during John F. Kennedy’s

She points to the Germanna Cares program’s aid in dealing with food insecurity and the Germanna Guarantee program’s efforts to help students with unexpected expenses that might cause them to drop out of college.

“One of the most compelling things to me about being on the Foundation Board is hearing the stories of the students,” Piontek says. “COVID-19 has changed a lot of people’s lives. A lot of people have lost their jobs and these programs help them.”

Angel Piontek believes that when Germanna’s students prosper, so does our area.

“I believe that education is part of building a better community,” says Piontek, a member of the Germanna Educational Foundation Board of Directors who serves as vice president of marketing for Coldwell Banker Elite in Fredericksburg.

“Residents empowered by education can set goals and have a better life and a better future,” whether that education involves a degree or a workforce training certification, she says.

Piontek says that her company supports many good causes, but “Germanna specifically is near and dear to my heart because it also helps people on an individual basis. It feels like you’re helping each person make a better 24

– Angel Piontek Piontek is a bit of a techie and early adopter who quickly realized that smart homes would be popular with homeowners of all ages.

In March, she launched Vonne & Co. The studio creates premium paper goods for real estate agents, brokers, and mortgage officers to enhance their personal brands.

Germanna is a wonderful institution providing a top-quality, affordable education, to students in our region. The Real Estate Foundation has a portfolio of holdings that benefit the College and our students.

A very important part of Germanna is the Gladys P. Todd Academy. This is a program where Spotsylvania and City of Fredericksburg High School students in the 11th and 12th grades may earn their high school diplomas and at the same time earn two years of college credit.

Students are provided with tuition, fees, books, tutoring, mentoring, and laptop computers at no cost. This is a fantastic program to give deserving students a hand to enter the college or university of their choice.
