SZPUTNYIK HAJÓZÁSI TÁRSASÁG – MODERN SZÍNHÁZ- ÉS VISELKEDÉSKUTATÓ INTÉZET – LABOR SPUTNIK SHIPPING COMPANY – INSTITUTE AND LABORATORY OF MODERN THEATRE AND BEHAVIOURAL RESEARCH

MI A SZPUTNYIK?

WHAT IS SPUTNIK? The company did not want a stern-sounding, theatrical name, and chose one that is as controversial as its own existence instead. ’Sputnik’ symbolizes motion into the unknown, with the risk of failure and explosion, but also the opportunity to discover something new and wonderful. The term ’modern’ has become overused, and is somewhat hackneyed, so using it might be a gesture towards camp – still, it signals that our activities are untraditional. ’Behavioural research’ is what theatre is all about. Sputnik is, according to the Act about the Performing Arts, a Category VI., that is, an independent theatre. What does being categorised as independent mean? Structurally and economically it simply means that we are not operating inside a conventional theatre building that is financed by either a local government or the state, and we need to apply for funds not only for production costs, but our operational costs as well. Our continued operation therefore hinges upon the success of these grant applications and the funds awarded us. Because of this, and the fact that, our three years of operation and our independent status notwithstanding, we are working with a relatively large permanent cast, we need international joint productions to bolster the funds we are awarded at home.

Sputnik’s vision is to build and sustain a new theatre workshop environment based on experience gained in institutional, conventional theatrical routine. We seek to establish a form of extrainstitutional theatrical existence that facilitates reflective and high-standard workflow. We consider the nurturing of free creative processes, experimentation, and the research and revision of theatrical idioms just as important as the performance of classics and contemporary works alike. We wish to strike a balance between retaining our mobility and thinking inside the box. The main objective of our foreign strategy is to accentuate transnational communication and communion, and to promote shared tender tendering, joint productions and other forms of casual international co-operation.

A 2011/2012-es évad társulatának tagjai: Színészek: Czukor Balázs, Fábián Gábor, Hajduk Károly, Hay Anna, Jankovics Péter, Koblicska Lőte, Lajos András, Molnár Gusztáv, Szabó Zoltán, Székely Rozi, Tóth Simon Ferenc Stáb: Keresztes Gábor (hangtechnika-zene), Róbert Júlia (dramaturg), Ságodi Ildikó (nemzetközi kapcsolatok), Turai Tamás (dramaturg, honlapszerkesztő) Ügyvezető: Tóth Péter Társulatvezető-rendező: Bodó Viktor A 2011/2012-es évadban is állandó alkotótársak: Balázs Juli (jelmeztervező), Bányai Tamás (világítástervező), Klaus von Heydenaber (zeneszerző), Nagy Fruzsina (jelmeztervező), Pascal Raich (díszlettervező), Varga Imre (fotós) Veress Anna (fordító, dramaturg)

THE COMPANY Sputnik has come together as a company in January 2008. Led by director Viktor Bodó, it is a coalition of young actors who had just started their careers at the time as well as actors who had been carving out their careers for a couple of years. The first concern was developing a creative community ready for cross-pollinating creative interaction and long-term cooperation. It is no mean feat that the company has stabilised as a unit and our team can develop and grow year after year. The company’s line-up for the 2011/2012 season: Actors and actresses: Balázs Czukor, Gábor Fábián, Károly Hajduk, Anna Hay, Péter Jankovics, Lőte Koblicska, András Lajos, Gusztáv Molnár, Kata Pető, Zoltán Szabó, Rozi Székely, Zita Téby, Ferenc Tóth Simon Crew: Gábor Keresztes (sound operator-music), Júlia Róbert (dramaturge), Ildikó Ságodi (international relations consultant), Tamás Turai (dramaturgehomepage editor) Manager: Péter Tóth Company leader-director: Viktor Bodó We are happy to have a creative crew stay with us in the 2011/2012 season also: Juli Balázs (costume designer), Tamás Bányai (lighting designer), Móni Bujtás (graphic design), Klaus von Heydenaber (composer), Fruzsina Nagy (costume designer), Pascal Raich (set designer), Tamás Turai (dramaturge), Imre Varga (photographer), Anna Veress (translator, dramaturge)

A nyitás, a mobilitás és a rugalmasság jegyében diákok számára készülő, könnyen utaztatható előadással bővül kínálatunk, ahol a színházi előadás mellett drámapedagógiai foglalkozást is tartunk a színészek részvételével.

> OUR MODUS OPERANDI / CREATIVE VISION The company has kept the premieres from the previous seasons on the repertoire while staging several new productions of classic as well as contemporary plays and appears in various domestic and foreign performances, on grand stages and in studio theatres alike. Hoping to establish a tradition following last season’s successful guest direction, we will host young directors for a single production each season – we prize the opportunity to get to know new people and to find new creative partners. We take professional development very seriously and our in-house training programme – with artistic movement training, elocution classes, language courses, and orchestra practice for the performances – is going strong. As a gesture of mobility, flexibility, and openness, we have designed a performance that is easily staged in impromptu circumstances and can serve as a touring production in schools with high school students in mind – our actors conduct “theatre in education” sessions following the performance.

KÜLFÖLDI “ EGYÜTTMUKÖDÉS Társulatunk életében különösen fontos szerepet töltenek be a külföldi munkák, abban a különleges helyzetben vagyunk ugyanis, hogy fesztiválmeghívások mellett minden évben nemzetközi koprodukciókra is felkérést kapunk.

COLLABORATIONS ABROAD Obligations that take us beyond the border play a major role in the everyday workings of our company since we are in the very special position of not only getting invited to theatre festivals abroad but also offered the opportunity to take part in international co-productions every year. Over the years Sputnik has developed a bipolar modus operandi that is unique in Hungary: Each season we premiere just as many performances at home as in foreign theatres, and so our running costs are covered through domestic funding on the one hand, and through our co-production partners’ financial support on the other. International projects are significantly different from our usual domestic operation – we play to hundreds of people at a time in famous European theatres, a crew of forty-fifty is involved in staging the performance, and our actors play in a foreign language. We consider this two-pronged system essential to our mobility and diversity: When playing at home, every task to do with the performances has to be dealt with by members of the company, but we experience a completely different way of theatrical life abroad, the lessons from which we then apply to our domestic operation.

működést, létezést. És ezeket a tapasztalatokat aztán itthon is hasznosítani tudjuk. Koprodukciós partnerünk évek óta a Bühnen der Stadt Köln, ami kétszer is „Az Év Színháza”- díjat kapta Németországban, a Schauspielhaus Graz, aminek igazgatónője, Anna Badora 2011-ben kultúrmenedzseri tevékenységéért kapott országos elismerést, és a Staatstheater Mainz.

We have been, for several years now, involved with Bühnen der Stadt Köln, which has been awarded the prize for Theatre of the Year in Germany twice; Schauspielhaus Graz, whose director, Anna Badora received an Austrian national award in 2011 for her cultural management activities; and Staatstheater Mainz.

BEMUTATÓK A MEGALAKULÁS ÓTA / OUR WORK SINCE THE COMPANY’S INCEPTION

> HOLT LELKEK

műhelybemutató: 2008. március 10., bemutató: 2008. május 10. rendező: Bodó Viktor „Gyakran úgy tűnik, hogy jól összefogott improvizációt látunk, az sem kizárható, hogy a továbbiakban minden előadásban más-más helyzettel találkozunk majd, hiszen a megoldások sokfélesége a háttérben húzódó kimeríthetetlen ötlet-bázisról tesz tanúbizonyságot, amelyet mindvégig kifinomult humorral tálalnak.” Laborczi Dóra – kultura.hu

> SZENTIVÁNÉJI ÁLOM

bemutató: 2008. július 25. rendező: Bodó Viktor „Bodó Viktor Szentivánéji álom-adaptációjában valóban bármi megtörténhetett, a popzenés, tenyeres-talpas szexualitástól a diktatorikus, kiábrándító szerelemig.

DEAD SOULS in-house premiere: 10 March, 2008 premiere: 10 May, 2008 director: Viktor Bodó ”Viewers’ suspicions that they are in fact watching a well-structured improvisation seem confirmed several times during the show and it might well be that each performance will present a different situation. The inexhaustible supply of creative ideas that fuels the diverse bag of tricks put on stage with subtle humour would certainly allow it.” Dóra Laborczi – kultura.hu

A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM premiere: 25 July, 2008 director: Viktor Bodó ”Literally anything was possible in Viktor Bodó’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream-adaptation: everything from buxom, impish sexuality set to pop hits down to a dictatorially regimented, disappointed love affair. The whole artistic vision in this case was to throw the map away; the play itself and the new Nádasdy-translation are powerful enough in themselves to carry loads of rustic ornaments, and the text and the story do not totter under any amount of experimentation.” Sisso – kultura.hu

> BÉRHÁZTÖRTÉNETEK 0.1, 0.3

bemutató: 2008. november 29. rendező: Bodó Viktor „Nagyon tudatos színészvezetés, a színészek példátlanul összehangolt, egyéni és egyedi megoldásokat sem mellőző játéka, a különlegesen kreatív zenei betétek a hozzájuk kapcsolódó, hasonlóan izgalmas - bár egyszerű ötletekből összeálló - látványa sok rétegű, tömör matériát hoz létre, mégis megőrzi könnyedségét a rendező, és számtalan helyzetkomikummal, geggel oldja fel a sokszor tragikus tartalmakat.” Vida Virág - kultura.hu

> VÁGÁNYBENÉZŐ

bemutató: 2008. október 22. rendező: Göttinger Pál „Az előadás nagy fegyverténye, hogy megmutatja a mindennapok testet-lelket őrlő monotóniájának abszurditását, amelyen minduntalan áttör a kisember – teljesen értelmetlen – lázadása. Szekeres Szabolcs, Z’ArtKor

COUNCIL HOUSE STORIES 0.1, 0.3 premiere: 29 November, 2008 director: Viktor Bodó “The highly conscious direction of the actors; the profoundly tight ensemble that nevertheless features several individual highlights; the exceptionally creative use of music; and the accompanying simple but exciting production design ideas all add up to create a multi-layered and solid material that still retains a certain jauntiness thanks to the direction; the often tragic themes are set off by situational comedy and gags. Viktor Bodó has a knack for condensation, for finding the single essential moment of a schematic human-interest situation, and manages to sum up its quintessence in a gesture, snapshot, or sound effect.” Vida Virág - kultura.hu RAILROAD TRACK MIRROR premiere: 22 October, 2008 director: Pál Göttinger ”A remarkable achievement of the performance is that it presents the absurdity of the routine, mind-numbingly humdrum monotony of everyday life that is regularly shattered by Everyman’s completely pointless rebellion. The ensemble cast effort, the meticulously worked out entries and exits, the mythology of the sounds and noises the props make, and the elaborate music mark this out as a memorable performance.” Szabolcs Szekeres, Z’ArtKor

> REHAB – RENESZÁNSZ HABITUS

(Akku csoport – Szputnyik közös produkció) bemutató: 2009. február 20. rendező: Bodó Viktor „A kiállításszerű elrendezés szabad utat enged a nézőnek, a mozaikszerűen sorjázó jelenetek folyamatos mozgást, a figyelem változtatását igénylik.

Werner Krause (KleineZeitung)

RE-HAB – RENAISSANCE HABITUS (a joint production of the Akku group and Sputnik) premiere: 20 February 2009 director: Viktor Bodó ”The exposition-like stage design invites the audience’s full attention onto the stage and the kaleidoscopic series of scenes demand the constant shifts in focus. Sputnik’s latest performance could well be compared to a gigantic experiment: a piece of living installation art that substitutes a presentation of the chaos of the present for traditional theatrical narrative, not really characteristic of the company anyway, as it meanders around the themes of the show.” Éva Kelemen (kultura.hu)

WORKSHOP: Teatro Due, Parma (26 February – 3 March, 2009)

PETER HANDKE: THE HOUR WE KNEW NOTHING OF EACH OTHER (a joint production of Schauspielhaus Graz and Sputnik) premiere: 15 May, 2009 director: Viktor Bodó ”Viktor Bodó, the Nestroy Award recipient, takes Handke’s dialogue-free play and forges an exactly hundred-minute long, watertight, magical and simply amazing slice of life on stage with gripping suspense that does not let up for a single instant. Viktor Bodó’s Handke-production leaves only fulfillment and gaping jaws in its wake.” Werner Krause (Kleine Zeitung)

Dina Netz (AKT 7. Theaterzeitung. Köln)

CARLO GOLDONI: THE LITTLE SQUARE (a joint production of the Zsámbék Theatre Base and Sputnik) premiere: 21 July, 2009 director: Dániel Kovács ”Only the humour part comes through from this bitter humour formula; bitterness is either sweetened or atrophied. Even the blood on the stage is just as funny as the rusty old bicycle with the missing saddle as a symbol of wealth or the tumbledown caravan where the supposedly lavish double wedding is held. The audience is submerged in the milieu and the mannerisms and it is mostly Goldoni’s original motifs that pop up every now and again that startle us rather than the brutality, grime and moral degradation that they are suffused with.” László Zappe (Népszabadság)

ISTVÁN TASNÁDI: TRANSIT (a joint production of Schauspielhaus Köln and Sputnik) premiere: 1 October 2009 director: Viktor Bodó ”This is not some saturnine lament about the loss of illusions, but a side-splittingly amusing Variety of Destruction. The Sputnik Shipping Company takes care of all our sparkling and flashing pandemonium needs. As far as theatrical skills, pacing, and timing are concerned, the Hungarian actors are frighteningly flawless – without, however, this sense of perfection dulling their performances.” Dina Netz (AKT 7. Theaterzeitung.

A magas színvonalú játék válik tartalommá. Ritkán látni ilyen nehéz elemekből összecsiszolt könnyedséget, mozaikkockákból kirakott pontosságot, egyéni arcokból homogenizált közösséget. Fegyelem és elegancia ötvöződik.” Koltai Tamás (Élet és Irodalom) ARDEN: ÉLNEK, MINT A DISZNÓK > JOHN bemutató: 2010. április 10. rendező: Göttinger Pál „Arden igencsak érvényes ma is.

VINNAI-TURAI-RÓBERT-BODÓ: THE DICE MAN premiere: 15 January, 2010 director: Viktor Bodó ”Bodó and company have invested immense mental and physical energy (cf. training and practice) in the ‘material’, and fashioned and tailored it to fit them to a tee. The production standards are to blame if one gets content instead of a void. The quality of the acting becomes the content. Very rarely does one see such fluid ease made up of so difficult elements, such accurately laid down myriad mosaic pieces, such a homogeneous community out of so many individuals. It is all an exemplar of what discipline and elegance can do if they join forces.” Tamás Koltai (Élet és Irodalom)

JOHN ARDEN: LIVE LIKE PIGS premiere: 10 April, 2010 director: Pál Göttinger “Arden is still very much relevant today. ”Househouse-garden”, one of the characters refers to the depressing type-cast surroundings. The sittingtheatre production – Pál Göttinger’s direction as well as the ten players’ performances – is of a high standard. The actors sit facing us, they do not move too much, they address their dialogue not to each other but to us in the audience, and only signal unavoidable action with an effective gesture or two, or a piece of special effects.”

FRAGMENTS premiere: 1 September, 2010 directors: Viktor Bodó, Balázs Czukor, András Dömötör, István Kárpáti ”These Sputnik-people have a knack for quibbling, impertinence and iconoclasm, but above all else, for play, for plumbing the depth of reality and illusion, actuality and fantasy, superficiality and profoundness – and they go ahead and use irony, parody, or God forbid, the absurd to satisfy their curiosity. (...) They apparently take nothing but the acting profession seriously and all this – on a related note, the performance exudes tons of exemplary discipline and accuracy – makes the emptiness that the show is ‘about’ become something tangible, indeed, an aesthetic and philosophical message.” Tamás Koltai (Élet és Irodalom)

CLASS REUNION (short film) principal photography between 27 September and 3 October, 2010 BULGAKOV: THE MASTER AND MARGARITA (a joint production of the Sputnik Shipping Company and Schauspielhaus Graz) premiere: 12 December, 2010, Schauspielhaus Graz director: Viktor Bodó “Viktor Bodó, one of the few directors with the necessary knowledge and perspective to be able to distil even the most convoluted story down to its essential core, has gone and done the impossible: a complete and free-standing world, mired

> CSEHOV: CSERESZNYÉSKERT I. bemutató: 2011. február 12. rendező: Bodó Viktor

„Tesztelés folyik vajon? Ki tesztel kit? Bodó Viktor Csehovot? A társulatát? A közönség reagálását?

in chaos, insanity , and ill fortune shrieks in all its crude voices and sounds in his absolutely one-ofa-kind stage adaptation of the novel performed at the Graz Theatre.” Werner Krause, Kleine Zeitung

THE SNOW QUEEN (based on the Andersen-fairy tale) premiere: 18 December, 2010 director: Balázs Czukor ”The preliminary tale is all that is left of the original Andersen story: the devil’s (as opposed to the wicked troll’s) mirror breaking into a million tiny shards, and the names of the protagonists; Kay and Gerda. The lazily unfolding story is, however, only vaguely reminiscent of the fairy tale: instead of the teenage playmates, it speaks of a couple that grew up together to mellow their long-standing friendship into romance. They are large kids (or little adults) who do not yet know how to approach the other.” András Sztrókay – szinhaz.net

CHEKHOV: THE CHERRY ORCHARD premiere: 12 February 2011 director: Viktor Bodó We are staging Chekhov’s classic in an unconventional two-part format: the first two acts, which have been given an interesting spin, will be performed in February 2011 in the MU Theatre and the whole play will be performed in Trafó in the autumn with yet another interpretation. We would like to

Nem hosszú, naturális csendekkel tudja, hanem felszín alatti villanásokkal, robbanásokkal, belső látomásokkal, szürreális pillanatokkal, David Lynch-i horrorisztikus feszültségekkel.” Koltai Tamás (Élet és Irodalom)

> VINNAI ANDRÁS: A FÉRFI A 2-ES ASZTALNÁL

Diana Netz - Deutschlandfunk Kultur Heute

take our time developing the material and to present the central themes of the play, the loss of values and our attachment to them, in as complex and multilayered a form as possible. The fact of life that one clings to any little thing that promises a modicum of security must be talked about. Our basic instinct to fight for our supposed security to our last breath is also a given, as is our need that if it is after all taken away, it should be lost in the way, speed, and manner that we can accept. It is human to cling to even terrible memories, objects, and principles. ANDRÁS VINNAI: THE MAN AT TABLE NO. 2 (a joint production of the Sputnik Shipping Company and Schauspielhaus Köln) premiere: 29 April 2011, Schauspielhaus Köln director: Viktor Bodó An ordinary diner. Not in the centre of town, but not on the outskirts either. It might have gone out of business long ago or it might not even have opened yet. It’s Monday, it’s Tuesday, it’s Thursday, it’s early morning with just a few customers, it’s the rush hour, it’s the afternoon lull, it’s late at night. Time passes, speeds up, repeats itself, or goes haywire. Somebody grows old while someone else is waiting for his cup of tea to cool. Set meals change according to rota, one of the stairs is always creaking and a neon light over the ‘cursed table’ never stops flickering. There’s the coughing boss in the office, the guitar-wielding cook, the cashier lady who must be flirted with, and the new barman; there’s the food safety inspector and of course the clientele: the welcome as well as the unwelcome customers, the couples and the solitary passers-by. Their lives unfold in fragments and snapshots. Their stories come together, crash into or skirt around each other. The performance has little dialogue, lots of music, and casts a grotesque, surrealistic, sad, brutal, absurd and surprising look at everyday life.

22. (Winterthur), 2011. október 13. (Mainz) rendező: Bodó Viktor „Bodó „vágásai”, amelyekkel gyorsan színt változtat, a peronról a hálókocsiba, az étkezőkocsiból a poggyászkocsiba, a díszletfalak egyszerű föl-le húzásából állnak; a flash-backek, amelyekben Hercule Poirot, akit itt Pfeffernek hívnak, a gyilkosságot kívánja rekonstruálni, ugyanannak a jelenetnek a variációira és ismétléseire alapulnak (...)” Christoph Schütte (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung)

SOPHOCLES: ANTIGONE a production designed for classroom performance premiere: 20 April, 2011. director: Attila Gigor The first instalment of Sputnik’s Theatre in Education programme is a classroom performance for high school students directed by film director Attila Gigor. The main purpose of our conversation with the classes during and after the performance is to stress the importance of forming an individual opinion, of having original thoughts, and of not letting the welter of outside factors manipulate them. We strive to make the play and the message accessible to teenagers so the text has been rewritten, the choruses have been replaced with well-known hits, and the performance is accompanied by a drama interpretation session.

AGATHA CHRISTIE: DEATH ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS (A joint production of Sputnik Shipping Company, Staatstheater Mainz, and Theater Winterthur) premiere: 2 2 September, 2011 (Winterthur), 13 October, 2011 (Mainz) director: Viktor Bodó “Bodó, as a declaration of self-assertion and autonomy, builds solely on classic theatre techniques. His “cuts”, whisking us from setting to setting, from station platform to sleeping car, from dining car to baggage car in an instant, are carried out through a mere raising and lowering of backdrops and set walls; the flashbacks in which Hercule Poirot, here named Pfeffer, tries to reconstruct the murder, are variations and repetitions of the same scene; and last but not least all thirteen characters are individuals fleshed out with an eye for detail.” Christoph Schütte (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung)

ROSENCRANTZ ÉS GUILDENSTERN HALOTT bemutató: 2011. október 22. rendező: Gigor Attila „Gigor ugyanúgy ki-bejár az élők és holtak világában, mint ahogy a labirintusszerű térben mozognak hősei. Ahogy a cím is bejelenti, két főhősünk halott; a többi szereplő pedig nem más, mint egy színdarab idézetei, maszkot viselő bábok, akik Hamletté, Gertruddá stb. vedlenek át. Aki ebből a világból meg akar szökni - mert netán saját előre bejelentett halála elől, azaz szerepe elől menekül -, nyitogathatja ugyan az ajtókat, ugyanide fog visszatérni. A fikcióból ugyanis nincs kijárat.” Tompa Andrea (szinhaz.net)

TOM STOPPARD: ROSENCRANTZ & GUILDENSTERN ARE DEAD premiere: 22 October, 2011 director: Attila Gigor “Gigor is stepping in and out of the realms of the living and the dead just as his protagonists amble through the maze-like space. The two main characters are indeed dead and all the others are but quotations from a play – puppets masquerading as Hamlet, Gertrudis et al. as the need may be. Whoever wishes to escape this world –perhaps trying to opt out of his foretold death, his role in the play that is – can step through as many doors as he likes. He will inevitably arrive back where he started. One cannot escape fiction.” Andrea Tompa (szinhaz.net)
