Carta del presidente Letter from the President EL CEA nació en 1969 de la mano de ganaderos emprendedores y visionarios que vieron la necesidad de compartir experiencias e intercambiar ideas, iniciando una verdadera transferencia de tecnología entre establecimientos ganaderos. El objetivo principal de la organización es el de transmitir habilidades, conocimientos, tecnología y métodos de producción entre las empresas ganaderas para asegurar que los avances científicos y tecnológicos sean accesibles a un mayor número de personas, que así puedan desarrollar y aplicarlos en la obtención de mayores rendimientos. Esa transferencia de tecnología que soñaron los fundadores ha ido creciendo y tomando forma a nivel nacional con la realización de charlas, cursos, congresos y salidas de campo nacionales e internacionales, buscando siempre capacitar a quienes trabajan en todos los niveles de la cadena laboral del sector. Aquel pequeño círculo que inició entre nueve amigos se ha extendido, y actualmente agrupa a 60 empresas que siempre están en busca de la excelencia en la producción. Los años han pasado y este sueño de los fundadores se sustenta hoy más y mejor en función de más datos y mayores conocimientos, que permiten dejar a un lado las corazonadas, los impulsos, los ensayos tentativos, y realizar acciones más certeras con la información disponible. Los tiempos que vivimos, por más duros que parezcan, no son más duros que los que vivieron los ganaderos en sus inicios. La necesidad de reinventarnos constantemente nos mantiene activos y nos da el impulso para superar los límites y fijar nuevas y más exigentes metas, que a su vez alcanzaremos utilizando tecnología, estrategias y herramientas que seguirán adaptándose, perfeccionándose, para hacer de la ganadería una empresa productora de alimentos cada vez más eficiente. Con este libro pretendemos rendir homenaje a los fundadores, a aquellos amigos que tuvieron la visión de reunirse con el objetivo de beneficiarse mutuamente y buscar la eficiencia en la producción, contando brevemente la historia y plasmando en el mismo un legado del trabajo continuo, noble y persistente del ganadero paraguayo.
The CEA was founded in 1969 by entrepreneurial and visionary farmers who saw the need to share experiences and exchange ideas, initiating a true transfer of technology between livestock establishments. The main objective of the organization is to transmit skills, knowledge, technology and production methods among livestock companies to ensure that scientific and technological advances are accessible to a greater number of people, who can thus develop and apply them in obtaining higher yields. This transfer of technology that the founders dreamed of has been growing and taking shape at the national level with the holding of talks, courses, congresses in addition to national and international field trips, always seeking to train those who work at all levels of the sector's labor chain. That small circle that started with nine friends has expanded, and currently groups 60 companies that are always in search of excellence in production. The years have passed and this dream of the founders is supported today more and better based on more data and greater knowledge, which allows to put aside hunches, impulses, tentative trials, and carry out more accurate actions with the information available. The times we live in, no matter how tough they may seem, are not harder than those that ranchers lived in the beginning. The need to constantly reinvent ourselves keeps us active and gives us the impetus to overcome limits and set new and more demanding goals, which in turn we will achieve using technology, strategies and tools that will continue to adapt, improve, to make livestock sector more and more efficient in food production With this book we intend to pay tribute to the founders, to those friends who had the vision of meeting with the aim of mutually benefiting and seeking efficiency in production, briefly telling the story and embodying in it a legacy of continuous, noble and persistent work of the Paraguayan cattle rancher.

A mediados del año 1969 (09/06/1969) un grupo de ganaderos, en su mayoría amigos entre sí, fundan el CEA con el propósito de capacitarse, mejorar la producción y tecnificar la ganadería nacional, que hasta ese momento se llevaba a cabo de forma rústica y natural.
By mid-1969 (06/09/1969) a group of ranchers, mostly friends among themselves, founded the CEA with the purpose of training, improving production and making the national livestock production more technical, which until that time was carried out in a rustic and natural way.

El Sr. Fernando Serrati Gautier, reconocido como el impulsor de la idea de formar el CEA, era una persona muy activa y emprendedora.

Invitó a las primeras nueve ganaderas y contó con el apoyo de amigos y allegados como el Padre Alonso de las Heras, sacerdote del Colegio San José; Royden Morris Gallagher, quien llegó al Paraguay en 1964 contratado por el gobierno para hacer estudios de factibilidad de créditos para el sector ganadero, trabajo fundamental en la formación del Fondo Ganadero; y Mike Mulholland, gerente del Banco de Londres, luego Lloyds Bank, uno de los primeros del sector privado en dar créditos a las empresas ganaderas.
He invited the first nine cattle ranchers and counted also with the support of friends and relatives such as Father Alonso de las Heras, priest of the San José School; Royden Morris Gallagher who arrived in Paraguay in 1964, hired by the government to carry out credit feasibility studies for the livestock sector, a fundamental work on the formation of the Livestock Fund, and Mike Mulholland, Manager of the Bank of London, later Lloyds Bank, one of the first in the private sector to give credit to livestock companies.

Asociados Rápidamente el CEA gana prestigio y varias personas manifiestan su interés en asociarse lo que lleva a que en el año 1975 se realicen los trámites correspondientes para obtener la personería jurídica y otras gestiones. Sedes La Primera sede del CEA fue la oficina de Ganadera Piripucú en la calle Colón 262, luego en el año 1982 se adquiere la propiedad de la calle Kennedy 424 casi 25 de mayo del Barrio Seminario donde se encontraban los socios y compartían, aparte de las charlas y actividades del CEA, un espacio de reunión de amigos donde eran frecuentes los asados y las partidas de truco entre socios y sus familias. En el año 2010 se adquiere una vivienda en un amplio terreno en Santísima Trinidad y en el lugar en 2014 se inician las obras de construcción de las actuales oficinas del CEA. Salidas de campo El foco principal de las actividades del CEA gira en torno a las salidas de campo, que son la expresión más genuina del espíritu que impulsa a los socios del CEA. Esta práctica sirvió para romper con el hermetismo característico del productor tradicional aislado en sus problemas. La misma tiene dos protagonistas, por una parte el socio visitado, que tiene la oportunidad obtener una evaluación objetiva y sin costo de su unidad de producción de otros productores conscientes de la problemática del sector, y por otro los socios visitantes, que buscan actualizarse e intercambiar nuevas herramientas y tecnologías con el propietario y entre sí. El CEA organiza asimismo visitas a otras unidades de producción que a su criterio podrían transmitir experiencias importantes. Congresos Consciente que solamente las salidas de campos y las visitas a otras unidades de producción limitan el acceso a la tecnología, el CEA organiza para sus consocios, charlas, cursos y congresos, con disertantes nacionales y extranjeros.

Asumiendo su rol protagónico en el sector agropecuario del país y con el espíritu de compartir experiencias y conocimientos tecnológicos, el CEA inicia en el año 1994 una nueva etapa con la realización del primer Con-

El CEA organiza cursos, talleres, charlas y seminarios con disertantes referentes y actualizados sobre puntos específicos relacionados al tema del año. Dichas actividades son en su mayoría para asociados exclusivamente y otras abiertas a todo público.

Desde hace 20 años, en forma anual, durante la principal Exposición y Feria Ganadera realizada por la Asociación Rural del Paraguay (ARP), el CEA organiza una conferencia abierta a todo público con disertantes referentes y actualizados sobre algún punto específico relacionado al tema del año.

History in the testimony of its protagonists Recreamos aquí parte de la historia del CEA desde lo anecdótico de cada vivencia personal, a través del testimonio en video de algunos de sus actuales protagonistas, y lo que significó y significa para sus asociados y establecimientos el pertenecer a la institución.

Here we recreate part of the CEA's history from the anecdotal point of each personal experience, through the video testimony of some of its current protagonists, and what it meant and means for its associates and their establishments to belong to the institution.

"El CEA fue creado allá en el año 1969. En el inicio, las primeras reuniones se hicieron en Ganadera Piripucú S.A., a la cual yo represento hoy. En ese entonces el presidente del CEA era mi padre. Lo que buscábamos era comenzar. La idea principal era unir a la gente ganadera de la zona, de Villa de San Pedro en ese entonces, y hacer experimentos juntos, buscando resultados, tanto en pasturas como en ganados."

La filosofía CREA era de visitarse, productores de una zona se visitaban entre sí; tenían un asesor técnico que les organizaba las reuniones y con eso se iba descubriendo las actividades que cada uno hacía bien, y también lo que se hacía mal como para no cometer el mismo error. Mi abuelo, el Sr. Luis Fernández, que también era una persona (como los fundadores) inquieta en la época, se une después. No estuve vinculado al CEA en los inicios, pero sí estaba ya trabajando en el ambiente ganadero en esa época, y siempre que podía asistía a las salidas, invitado por algún otro socio que era vecino. (...) Soy muy entusiasta y medio especializado en genética y en selección de ganado. En tres oportunidades recibimos (visitas) en establecimientos que yo administro, en los años en los que se hacía cría porque los temas del CEA son medio rotativos, hay años de cría, genética y selección de ganado; al año siguiente invernada y recría; al siguiente producción forrajera, etc. Son eventos que me han quedado muy registrados. Es ahí donde se pone realmente a prueba este sistema; vienen tus colegas, analizan de pie a cabeza tu gestión,
tu producción, y es increíble como el que viene de afuera, sin conocer el establecimiento te canta cuatro o cinco cosas que vos no estás viendo y estás ahí todo el santo día. Y los golpes de timón que uno da, en base a esas recomendaciones, que prueban que esto realmente funciona. Esa franqueza, esa apertura que se extiende entre los socios es la que realmente los ayuda a superarse"

Recuerdo por ejemplo que una de las grandes cosas fue incorporar el tema del destete como herramienta productiva en la cría... hoy en día es algo normal la venta de desmamantes. Antes ellos criaban ganado y el ternero quedaba al lado de la madre, una cantidad de inconvenientes por la metodología de trabajo. Y hubieron muchísimas ventajas. (...) La incorporación original fue (motivada por) el hambre de buscar conocimientos en experiencia de otros y poder compartir también la propia."

"Una de las actividades transversales en el tiempo son los congresos que el CEA realiza cada año, para los que realmente hace un esfuerzo por traer lo mejor del conocimiento a nivel mundial y ponerlo a disposición de los productores paraguayos y de sus asociados en primer lugar. (...) Creo que el CEA ha cumplido un papel muy importante en Paraguay, reemplazando a algún organismo del gobierno que se dedique a la investigación, que hasta hoy no tenemos. (...) Para nosotros es como una universidad para todos los niveles de la empresa; podemos enviar a los que trabajan en la parte administrativa, técnicos, veterinarios, hasta el nivel de capataces; hasta las cocineras y tractoristas encuentran un lugar para mejorar y adquirir conocimientos."

Mi deseo es que esta institución se fortalezca cada vez más.
