Extinction Rebellion invited people to Unite to Survive at ‘The Big One’ – a four day action from the 21st to the 24th April 2023 where groups and movements, including Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth and PCS Union, joined with XR at the Houses of Parliament and government departments throughout Westminster. Among the tens of thousands in London were members and friends of Calderdale Extinction Rebellion. The banner they unfurled at the People’s Picket in front of the Department for Levelling up, Housing & Communities had been created over weeks by a small team in Hebden Bridge, working at Northlight Studio, The Trades Club and their own homes.

With its production quietly coordinated by ‘Bee’, the banner calls for ‘Solidarity for Survival’, as she explains: ‘Solidarity with people in distress and poverty in this country - and also arriving at our shores whose welfare our government refuses to consider; solidarity with the poor countries least responsible for the climate crisis and most affected by it, for whom governments of rich countries such as ours have so far failed to cough up the climate mitigation funding promised in Paris at COP21; and solidarity with the other species with whom we share the world and without whose biome we shall be part of the 6th mass extinction.’
