1996: Foundation

1998: Debut with Half-Life

2003: Launch of Steam

August 24, 1996: Valve Corporation was founded by former Microsoft employees Gabe Newell and Mike Harrington in Kirkland, Washington.

November 19, 1998: Valve released their debut game, the first-person shooter Half-Life, which was a critical and commercial success.

September 12, 2003: Valve launched Steam, a digital distribution platform for video games.

2000: Counter-Strike Emerges

2004: Half-Life 2 and Source Engine

November 9, 2000: Originally a mod for “Half-Life,” “Counter-Strike” is officially released as a standalone game, becoming a cultural phenomenon.

November 16, 2004: Valve released Half-Life 2, which received critical acclaim and sold 12 million copies by 2011.

Gabe Newell

Co-Founder of Valve Corporation Gabe Newell, born November 3, 1962, is a gaming industry luminary and Valve Corporation’s co-founder.

Formerly at Microsoft, he co-established Valve in 1996.

Newell’s visionary leadership catapulted Valve to iconic status, delivering groundbreaking titles like “Half-Life,” “Counter-Strike,” and “Portal.” Beyond gaming, he’s instrumental in the success of Steam, the leading online gaming platform.

Mike Harrington

Co-Founder of Valve Corporation Mike Harrington, co-founder of Valve Corporation with Gabe Newell in 1996, played a vital role in shaping the company’s early culture.
