NEW TECHNOLOGY, NEW PROGRAMS… NEW ALUMNI In a presentation I made to the University System of Georgia Board of Regents last year I noted that changes in the technology and the way higher education is structured today is affecting the way colleges and universities relate to their graduates. When I was in college, back before the Dead Sea had died, I lived in a dorm, ate in the cafeteria, played intramural sports, participated in various student groups, and attended classes with the other students.

There were no cell phones, no X-boxes, no personal computers, or iPods, no on-line courses, and the only television sets were in the commons areas in the dorms. As a result, there was a strong sense of community; we as students did many things together: played cards, studied in groups, had meals with each other and were often joined by members of the faculty, and participated in ad hoc discussions about the great issues of life. As a result, by the time we graduated we had developed strong ties with our friends, the faculty, and the institution. That experience meant something and kept us tied to the college long after we graduated. And even now, we go back for homecoming to reconnect with old friends, see what has changed at the college, and relive those halcyon days as a student.

Contrast that experience with the experience of a particular young woman who graduated from Georgia Southwestern in December of 2011. She began her college career at Georgia Perimeter College (GPC) and enrolled in a three-year degree program that

was introduced two years earlier.

She completed her lower division courses at GPC in one and onehalf years. She immediately began taking Georgia Southwester n courses, all of which were on-line.

In three years she had completed a four-year degree in accounting.

When she came to GSW for the graduation ceremony it was the first time she had ever been on the campus. Unfortunately, it may also be the last time.

As strange as this may sound to those of us who went to school several decades ago, this is in many ways the college experience of the future. Increasingly, students will complete their degrees on-line and never set foot on a campus, unless they come to graduation to receive their diplomas. I am proud of the fact that Georgia Southwestern has a wide range of courses and programs on-line. We must if we are to remain competitive.

However, the question remains.

I f o n - l i n e p ro g r a m s a re t h e educational venue of tomorrow, what does that say about the alumni of tomorrow? If they only rarely if ever come to campus; if they develop few meaningful ties with other students; if they never really have the sense of community that breeds loyalty among graduates; why are they going to come back to campus for special events and just as importantly, why are they going to contribute to the GSW Foundation?

This is a challenge that many colleges and universities are facing: nurturing loyalty among the new breed of “on-line” alumni.

Georgia Southwestern’s Alumni

Association is working to find new ways of staying in touch with our graduates and giving them reason for staying connected, coming back, and giving. However, we still tend to think of our alumni as those who attended classes on campus and participated in a variety of activities outside the classroom. Somehow, we must devise a method of giving all of our graduates a sense of ownership in the institution and a responsibility for ensuring its continued success.

Again, the nature of the college experience has changed dramatically in the last forty years.

As a part of that change, the relationship between the institution and its graduates is being redefined.

Georgia Southwestern’s future depends in part on our finding ways to build and maintain ties with our “new alumni.” The question of how we do that remains largely unanswered.

GSW ALUMNI PRESIDENT LETTER GREETINGS FELLOW GSW ALUMNI AND FRIENDS, The Mission Statement of the Alumni Association at Georgia Southwestern State University is clear. A principal goal of the Association is to unite its members and encourage lifelong support of the University as it pursues its goal of academic excellence. I believe that GSW Alumni have both the responsibility and the means to help the University reach its goals.

GSW Alumni are located in all parts of the world. But regardless of where you might be, you can play an important role in keeping the Alumni Association strong. For that reason we want to do all we can to involve you with your Association and your alma mater.

The Alumni Association sponsors many great events which provide opportunities for getting together to share our common past and keep up with the changes at GSW. I encourage you to take advantage of these events as a means of maintaining your ties to the University, your classmates, and other alums.

As we move into the next phase of our evolution as an Association, I appeal to you to lend your financial support to help ensure the continued success of GSW. These contributions to the GSW Foundation are used to fund various efforts, one of which is to provide academic scholarships to eligible students, some of whom may not otherwise be able to afford college.

There are over 25,000 living Georgia Southwestern alumni. Unfortunately, a small percentage of those actively participate in making contributions to the University. As an alum you are already a part of GSW’s legacy.

What better time than now to give back and participate in its future.

I was a GSW student who benefited

from private scholarships. My path to a post-secondary education began as a high school graduate who had to postpone attending college and playing intercollegiate sports in order to stay at home and care for my mother who had become disabled. I took on the responsibility of supporting our household by working two jobs. During this time I had to seek legal counsel to help us settle my mother’s disability benefits claim. As a result of our needing the assistance of an attorney, a man by the name of Rudolph Patterson came into our lives.

Rudolph, as it turns out, was not only a managing partner at Westmoreland, Patterson, Moseley and Hinson Attorneys at Law in Macon but also the founding president of the Georgia Southwestern Alumni Association.

With his help, my mother was awarded her full social security benefits. At the same time, Rudolph encouraged me to enroll at GSW and continue in my pursuit of a college education.

I am but one example of how one can overcome adversity and attain a college education regardless of the financial challenges he or she might face. There are avenues that exist for providing assistance to those who are determined to reach their goals despite the odds. Our contributions as alumni help to make that possible. It is a small gesture when made individually.

I took Rudolph’s advice and enrolled at GSW. I discovered later, by chance, that Rudolph Patterson had quietly provided personal cash scholarships to me through the Alumni Association.

It was because he was aware of my situation, believed in my potential, and was willing to invest in that potential that I could afford a college degree. I graduated from GSW with honors (i. e., Magna Cum Laude) in 1997.

C o l l e c t i v e l y, h o w e v e r, t h e s e small gestures amount to many opportunities for individuals to see their dreams fulfilled.

Subsequently, as I began my career as an accountant (Doug is now a Partner at Mauldin and Jenkins,LLC) I was focused on achieving professional success. Like most recent college grads I was preoccupied with my job and gave little thought to how I might give back to my alma mater.

Not-just-for-golf club car — The Alumni Association purchased a new golf cart (in GSW blue) so they could show off the beautiful campus to returning alums. The Association is gracious enough to let other departments around campus use the cart when needed, as well.

LEADING THE WAY GSW GRADS MAKING A MARK ON TECHNICAL EDUCATION IN GEORGIA

Colleges and universities are shameless in touting their famous alums and alumni “leaders.” Georgia Southwestern is no different, in every opportunity sharing that a U.S. president attended and a former first lady and U.S. attorney general earned degrees here.

While incredibly famous, these individuals are by no means the only Southwestern grads who have made a name for themselves. Case in point, prior to May 2012, five schools within the Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG) had presidents who graduated from Georgia Southwestern: Sparky Reeves, Gail Thaxton, Michael Moye, Kathy Love, and Tina Anderson.

SPARKY REEVES (’71) The late Dr. William B. King, GSW president from 1963-1978, had a profound impact on South Georgia Technical College President Sparky Reeves.

“I was a student when Dr. King was president,” said Reeves. “And I was always impressed with how he walked the campus and met students and talked with them. As I moved into the education arena years later, I still remember the impact that had on me.”

Reeves’ tenure at South Georgia Tech began in 1973, a few years after he graduated from Georgia Southwestern, after working in sales. Starting as an instructor in accounting, business and business psychology, Reeves worked his way up in progressively responsible roles, first as an instructor supervisor in 1978, then as vice president of Economic Development Services in 1987. Reeves was named president in 2004 and serves as the school’s leader today. He makes every effort to emulate Dr. William B. King to this day.

Aeolian 2013 “The relationship that I developed with him at GSW, I incorporate here at South Georgia Tech,” said Reeves.

“I try to make a connection with students and talk with them to make sure I know what’s taking place on campus and how they perceive what’s happening here.

That’s an important aspect of why we are successful today. We never lose sight of our reason for being here.”

Success has not been a stranger to South Georgia Technical College with Reeves at the helm. From 2005 to 2011 South Georgia Tech had seven straight years of record enrollment, more than doubling the number of students enrolled in 2000. He attributes that success, in large part, to his outstanding faculty and staff. “We are making progress and we are sharing that progress through coordinated media efforts,” he added.

“If you don’t let people know what you are doing and who you are, they are never going to know,” he said. “As we review our strategies for the week,

every senior staff member talks about what’s taking place within their division. We call them ‘media moments.’ Everywhere there is a media moment or accomplishment, we make sure to share that with the community and within our organization.”

In terms of great “moments” during his life as a student at Georgia Southwestern, Reeves said that the most important would have to be “meeting an attractive college co-ed by the name of Allene Camp from LaGrange.” She has been Allene Reeves for the last 42 years.

“There were probably hundreds of great memories, but meeting Allene was the best,” he said. “What a great time to be in college – the late ‘60s. It was the best of times.

“The diversity that was in place during that time was just amazing; kids were from all over the region, the state, the southeast and the country,” he added. “We made our own fun…good clean fun. I could not have had a better experience.”

GAIL THAXTON (’72) You could say that Dr. Gail Thaxton is a “legacy” at GSW. “My mom and dad met at Georgia Southwestern,’ said Thaxton. Her parents were GSW students in the late ‘40s. “They met in the ‘campus store’ as students, and my brother and sister graduated from here. It’s been part of our family for a long time.”

“I was married while I was a student, so I never was involved in student life activities. I ate a lot of hamburgers at the student snack bar,” she joked remembering days at Southwestern. “I had the best instructors in statistics, in health science classes and psychology – really outstanding professors. They made things so interesting and so relevant. Sometimes I had the same instructor multiple times. I felt like part of a community.”

According to Thaxton, she has been in education her entire career but not always in the same category.

“I never really used my behavioral science degree.

I worked as a teacher in special education for a number of years but very soon realized that I loved the administration part of the work.”

Realizing additional degrees in administration would be necessary, Thaxton earned a master’s degree in education from the University of Georgia and specialist and doctorate degrees in education from Valdosta State University.

From 1986 to 1992, she worked for the Terrell County Board of Education, and from 1992 to 2000, she was an assistant superintendent for the Grady County school system. This is when she made a significant career move, one that would put her on track for technical college presidency.

at Albany Technical College; she was hired as president of Okefenokee Technical College (OTC) in 2005, and she was named North Georgia Technical College president in 2012. Thaxton’s modus operandi as a leader has kept her grounded.

“I never forget we are in the people business,” she said. “I know that in technical education we are selling jobs, but at the end of the day, it’s about people. That’s why I enjoyed Georgia Southwestern so much. It was

personal; the people made it as special as it was.”

She still keeps it personal. At OTC she developed a culture of philanthropy that hadn’t existed previously by organizing the school’s first donor recognition activities and becoming more engaged with the region.

Arguably the most impressive accomplishment for the school under her leadership was its CoC (Committee on Colleges) accreditation in 2009 – a three-year process.

MICHAEL MOYE (’75) “Things really began at Georgia Southwestern,” said Dr. Michael Moye, retired president of Central Georgia Technical College. “When I was in my senior year, one of my marketing professors told me about a marketing education job at Americus High School, for which I applied and was subsequently chosen.”

Moye credits this job – his first one out of college – for setting the table on his successful career in technical education. When he retired as president of Central Georgia Technical College in 2012, he was the most senior president within the Technical College System of Georgia. He served as president at three different schools – Moultrie Technical College, Lanier Technical College and Central Georgia Tech –within the system from 1994 to 2012. He started his career in the TCSG in 1985 as the vice president of instructional and student services at West Georgia Technical College in Carrolton.

After earning his Bachelor of Business Administration from Georgia Southwestern, Dr. Moye went on to acquire his master’s and doctorate degree from the University of Georgia. “Everything began at Southwestern,” he reiterated, paying particular respect to his time in the University’s Greek system as a member of the Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity.

“The Greek life during my time at Georgia Southwestern was a very positive influence on me from the aspect of social development,” he said.

“People think of fraternities and sororities as a place to go for parties. They don’t really look at the other benefits that a fraternity (or sorority) offers, like social and leadership development and the ability and opportunity to get involved with service projects. I met a lot of great people, too.” One of Moye’s fraternity brothers was Sparky Reeves, president at South Georgia Technical College.

As a leader, Moye operated on the “golden rule” philosophy. “That’s basically been my philosophy throughout my career,” he said. “Always keep students number one and treat people the way that I would want them to treat me. I provided every employee at Central Georgia Tech with a three-page document that outlined my operating philosophy. It included the things that I expected and the things that they could look for in me.”

While Moye was president at Lanier Tech (2002-2010), enrollment climbed by 66 percent, the college added three campuses, and they added a Motorsports Vehicle Technology program for NASCAR and Formula One Racing. It was named an outstanding training program in the nation 2007.

He served as president of Central Georgia Technical College from 2010 to 2012.

KATHY LOVE (’85) “I was in my mid-20s when I started my college education,” said Dr. Kathy Love, Savannah Technical College president. “I was a stay-at-home mom and lived in Americus.”

Love took a road not often traveled while attending Georgia Southwestern. She was enrolled in the newly developed computer science program in the early 80s.

“It took me more than four years, and I was involved in the first co-op that IBM in Boca Raton, Florida had with Georgia Southwestern. For six months, I loaded up the kids, took my oldest out of kindergarten and went south to Florida. I think maybe eight or nine of us were in that group, and I was the only non-traditional student.”

Moving her family, as Kathy did, for only months at the time was a difficult task, but she took it in stride.

“I loaded a U-Haul trailer and drove my kids to Florida,” she said. “I had a wonderful experience there.

What I did there allowed me to transition over to a job at South Georgia Tech where we developed the microcomputer specialist degree.”

Love continued her education in GSW’s MBA program while teaching at South Georgia Tech, and she was eventually promoted to vice president of Administrative Services.

“My ultimate goal was to be a technical college president,” she said. “And there is not a clear path to that position from the business office. In 1994, I had the opportunity to go to Middle Georgia Technical College in Warner Robins as the vice president of Instruction (now known as Academic Affairs).”

Just before taking the job at Middle Georgia Tech, Love finished her specialist degree in education from Columbus State University (1994). She worked at Middle Georgia Tech until 2001, when she took a job as vice president of Flint River Technical College in Thomaston (now Southern Crescent Technical College). Kathy was appointed to interim vice president after a short time there and was named permanent president in 2002.

“Thomaston Mills had just closed their doors when I arrived at Flint River Tech, and half of the people in the community lost their jobs from one day to the next,” Love said. “Fourteen hundred textile workers were unemployed, and the technical college system commissioner at that time and I tried to help put something in place to retrain those workers – to get the community back on its feet.”

Love was named president of Savannah Technical College in 2009 after serving Flint River Tech for seven years. She has accomplished her career goals by understanding leadership and how to support her staff.

“I have done a little bit of everything, which sometimes comes in handy,” she added. “In fact, we are all wearing more and more hats, especially over the last three years changing from quarters to semesters. My principal philosophy involves getting my people what they need and to help them when I can and not ask anyone to do anything I’m not willing to do myself. I think this builds a good team.”

TINA ANDERSON (’87) Dr. Tina Anderson is a first generation college graduate. A native of Ellaville, Georgia Southwestern was the logical choice for her, only 15 minutes south of the quiet Southwest Georgia town.

“I was the first person in my family to attend college,” she said. “I knew very early on the importance of higher education, and Georgia Southwestern was almost in my back yard.”

She credits her time in the classroom and the influence of professors for leaving an indelible mark on where she is today. “I remember the faculty, without a doubt,” she added. “Dr. Liz Wilson…she was tough, but I have never forgotten what she taught me. To this day, I can call her and ask for her advice. Dr. Jerry Rowland and Dr. John Bates were also great teachers.”

Dr. Anderson is giving advice of her own these days at Georgia Southwestern. She presently serves on the Business Advisory Council for GSW’s School of Business Administration. Made up of volunteers, this group’s mission is to guide, promote, advise and support the School of Business Administration in its efforts to serve its students, state, region, and nation.

Anderson began her career as president of Moultrie Technical College in August 2003 after serving as the vice president of Academic Affairs and vice president of Student Affairs at Middle Georgia Technical College in Warner Robins. Prior to that, she served in leadership positions at Middle Georgia College in Cochran and here at GSW in the Admissions Office. Having earned a BBA and MBA from Georgia Southwestern, Anderson attended Georgia Southern University for her doctorate in education. In 2004, she was named to Georgia Trend Magazine’s 40 Under 40 list for the “Best and Brightest Young Georgians.”

As a leader, Anderson never loses sight of the details and understands that treating employees with respect is paramount.

“People might forget what you say, but they will not forget how you made them feel about what you said.

A question I often ask myself is ‘What would I want people to say about working with me?’ Hopefully, their response would be ‘I’m really glad that I had the opportunity to work with Tina Anderson.’”

More and more people are saying that very thing these days, as Moultrie Tech’s faculty and staff have grown to 250 full and part-time employees on its four campuses. Anderson’s academic team is excelling. In particular, Moultrie Tech’s surgical technology program was recently named a “Top 5” in the nation. *During the production of this magazine, Anderson was named president of Wiregrass Georgia Technical College.

HURRICANE NEWS LEGENDARY COACH DIES, GSW ESTABLISHES JIMMY HIGHTOWER SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Hightower is also in the Georgia Southwestern Hall of Fame, and he was inducted to the inaugural class of the Americus-Sumter County High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2011.

To the people who knew him, Jimmy Hightower was not just a coach or a teacher; he was a mentor and a friend. Some of those friends are helping establish an athletic scholarship in his memory at Georgia Southwestern State University. Coach Hightower died March 30 after battling cancer.

Former members of the GSW and Americus High Football teams have initiated the fund and are encouraging others to join and support their efforts.

“In honor of Coach Hightower’s legacy of leadership, we have established the Coach Jimmy Hightower Athletics Endowment at Georgia Southwestern State University,” said former GSW quarterback Rick Davis. “Coach Hightower was more than a legendary coach; he influenced lives and made a difference to countless student athletes, colleagues and members of the communities where he and his family lived and served.”

“The GSW Foundation is honored to have a fund in memory of the well-respected Coach,” said

Hightower’s accomplishments in coaching are well known in Southwest Georgia. He won state championships in football, baseball, basketball and golf at Americus High. When he returned to Americus from LaGrange in the early ‘80s to coach football at GSW, he never had a losing season in the program’s five-year run. He was inducted into the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame in 1989 and the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2003.

“Coach Jimmy Hightower will forever remain one of the great pillars of Hurricane Athletics history,” said GSW Athletics Director Jaclyn Donovan. “What an incredible man to touch as many lives as he did, and how fortunate for us that Coach Hightower was part of our GSW family. The Coach Hightower Athletic Fund will serve to support our studentathletes as we push them toward high achievement not only in the classroom but also on the fields and courts. It is our desire to produce quality individuals who will succeed in life, and we think Coach Hightower would approve wholeheartedly.”

Glynn-Ma-this • noun: one who shows profound devotion to his cause.

Alumni board member given lifetime membership

Since the founding of Georgia Southwestern State University’s Alumni Association in 1971, few members of its Board of Directors have been as dedicated as Glynn Mathis. Having served on the Board for 10 years (2002-2012), Mathis was named a lifetime member at the February meeting.

“Glynn has the heart of a giant,” said Doug Moses, president of the GSW Alumni Association. “He is the essence of someone who really cares about community.”

During his 10 years as a board member, Mathis never missed a meeting, making the three and one half hour drive from his home in Marietta to Americus without fail. His dedication to GSW has not been in time only. A 1951 graduate of then Georgia Southwestern College – a two-year college at the time – Mathis has endowed a GSW scholarship that is given annually to a student athlete from the School of Education.

“Glynn is the epitome of what a great alumnus should be,” said Karen Holloway, GSW director of Alumni Affairs. “Over the years he has been one of the most dedicated supporters of GSW that I have ever had the pleasure to know and with whom to work.” Mathis’ alumni accolades are not only limited to lifetime membership of the Alumni Board. He was the 2002 recipient of the Leewynn J. Finklea Outstanding Alumni Award, the 2012 recipient of the Aeolian Award (GSW’s highest alumni honor), and a 2001 inductee into the GSW Athletics Hall of Fame.

“It has indeed been an honor and a pleasure to get to know Glynn, not only through our work together on the GSW Alumni Association Board of Directors, but personally,” said Kim Comer, Alumni Affairs coordinator, who has worked closely with Mathis over the last six years. Prior to his retirement in 1988, Mathis had a successful 33-year career in public education where he served as a teacher, coach and administrator, primarily in the Cobb County School System. In 1980, Mathis became the first principal at Tritt Elementary School. He served as principal at Tritt until his retirement. Mathis served in the U.S. Air Force from 1951 to 1955 and received several achievement awards for his service during the Korean War. Mathis’ impact on Northwest Atlanta was made known loud and clear in 1988 when he was given the Public Servant Award by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and the Cobb County Public Servant of the Year.

He is a charter member of the Marietta Golden Kiwanis Club and has served in all official roles. Mathis was given the 1991-92 Marietta Golden K Kiwanian of the Year Award. In 1999 Mathis was awarded a Hixon Award by the club – one of Kiwanis International’s highest honors.

“Glynn was instrumental in helping our club establish our Youth Services Program in several schools,” said Tim McDaniel, past president of Marietta Golden K. “He also did me the honor of serving as an advisor during my year as president of the club in 2006-2007.

His records of the club’s activities were meticulous.”

As a student at Georgia Southwestern, Mathis was president of the freshman and sophomore classes and he worked in the old Campus Store. He was elected “Mr. Georgia Southwestern College” in 1951 and played center field for the baseball team from 1950-51. He also was vice president and secretary/ treasurer of the Double T Semi-Pro Baseball League in Southeast Georgia – twice voted as league all-star for the Hazlehurst Cardinals.

In addition to his degree from GSW, Mathis holds a Bachelor of Science in education from Georgia Southern University, a Master of Education from Vanderbilt University’s Peabody School of Education and a specialist degree from the University of Georgia.

A native of Americus and a 1948 graduate of Americus High School, Mathis resides in Marietta.

CAMPUS NEWS ROWELL NAMED EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF GSW FOUNDATION Reda K. Rowell joined the Georgia Southwestern Foundation as its executive director in December 2012, succeeding Boyce E. “Stick” Miller.

Rowell comes to the Foundation after spending 16 years in progressively responsible roles at Clayton State University in Morrow, Ga. Having begun as budget manager of CSU Continuing Education, Rowell moved into the Development and Alumni Affairs Office in 2001.

“I am excited about moving to Americus and joining the GSW team,” said Rowell. “I’ve received such a warm welcome already.

My whole career has been about relationship building in one

form or another. I am a believer in the transformative power of education and have a strong sense of dedication and community service.”

Harris Fellow by the Rotary Club of Lake Spivey; and in 1995, she was named Pacesetter of the Year by the Clayton County Chamber of Commerce.

“We are pleased to have Reda join the Foundation and the GSW family,” said Foundation Chairman Jimmy Skipper. “She brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in working with the Board of Regents, university administrators and staff, foundation members, students, and people interested in supporting a university like Georgia Southwestern with their time, talents, and resources.

GSW is one of our community’s greatest success stories, and Reda will certainly help the Foundation, the University, and our community continue to build on that success.”

Rowell is an alumna of Clayton State where she earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in management and a Master of Arts in history. She and her husband, Kelly, have two adult children and one grandchild.

At CSU, Rowell led successful efforts to secure the University’s first $1 million gift and its first $1 million planned gift. Serving as de facto executive director of the CSU Foundation, she created and led adoption of the Foundation’s investment and spending policy and fund management policy.

Rowell also helped lead the creation and operation of the CSU Foundation’s LLC I and II, which culminated in the building of CSU’s first on-campus housing and student center and the purchase of an 854-bed housing complex.

Rowell was well-recognized in the Clayton County area as an extremely involved member of the community. In 2011, she was a finalist for Clayton County Business Woman of the Year; in 2007, she was named a Paul

Mrs. Carter is a GSW graduate from the class of 1946, and President Carter attended Georgia Southwestern before transferring to Georgia Tech and then on to the US Naval Academy.

The bronze statue was sculpted by acclaimed artists Don Haugen and Teena Stern, a husband and wife team out of Marietta. The base of the sculpture is made from keystone blue granite mined in Elberton, Georgia.

The new building within the complex or “Carter II,” as it will be called on campus, stands at roughly 35,000 square feet and is home to the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregiving (RCI) and the Georgia Southwestern

The Rosalynn Carter Health and Human Sciences Complex is adjacent to GSW’s Education Center and the Wheatley Administration Building. Phase I of the project houses state-ofthe-art classrooms and clinical space for the School of Nursing, the University Health Center and a wonderful display portraying Mrs. Carter’s lifetime commitment to caregiving and advocating for mental health awareness.

Allstate Construction lead the Rosalynn Carter Health and Human Sciences Complex project and architectural firm Andras, Allen and Starr designed it. Allstate Construction President Bill Weldon is also a Georgia Southwestern alumnus.

Did You Know Known as Third District Agricultural & Normal College at the time, Georgia Southwestern maintained a nine-hole golf course in the late 1920s and ‘30s where Hurricane Baseball Field is currently located. All students were eligible to participate, and free lessons were taught by Mr. L.R. Towson, professor of math and chemistry.

SEN. JASON CARTER, PRESIDENT JIMMY CARTER SHARE HISTORIC MOMENT AT SPRING COMMENCEMENT

“What a memorable moment it was for all of us,” Blanchard said.

“As I told the graduates, they were extremely fortunate. Unlike most of us, they will never forget who spoke at their commencement exercises.”

Most often the person being introduced, President Carter was pleased to introduce someone else, one of his own descendants.

“Today, I have the honor of introducing my own grandson,” President Carter said. “The Carter family has been in Sumter County since 1833, and the speaker today is the sixth generation in our family.”

Sen. Jason Carter was elected to Georgia Senate District 42 on May 11, 2010 during a special election and is an attorney at Bondurant, Mixson & Elmore, LLP. Prior to joining this firm, Carter served as a law clerk to the Honorable Frank Mays Hull of the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit.

Also reflecting on the Carter legacy at Georgia Southwestern, Sen. Carter reiterated how significant the institution is to his family and the state of Georgia.

“It is a great honor for me to be here today, and thank you for allowing me to share this special day with you,” he said. “I am particularly glad that I’m giving my very first commencement address here at Georgia Southwestern. As my grandfather mentioned, this school is incredibly important to me and my family.”

WORTHY NAMED PROFESSOR OF THE YEAR Dr. LaVerne Worthy, professor of psychology at Georgia Southwestern, earned the 2013 Professor of the Year Award voted on by the class of 2012. The award was presented to her at Spring Commencement May 4 in the Student Success Center.

Sponsored by the GSW National Alumni Association, the award covers the faculty member’s quality of classroom teaching and

performance, dedication to the profession and his or her impact on students through the teaching and learning process.

Spending most of her time in the classroom, Worthy makes room in her schedule to serve others, as well. While serving on the fundraising committee for Southwest Georgia CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate), Worthy helped raise nearly $1,000,000 in grant funds and private donations from 2001 to 2008. As a result, she was the 2010 GSW Featured Public Servant Award recipient.

Following the May 2 building dedication and statue unveiling at Georgia Southwestern State University’s (GSW) Rosalynn Carter Health and Human Sciences Complex, the Carters attended commencement on Saturday, May 4. GSW President Kendall Blanchard, Ph.D., served as master of ceremonies and introduced President Carter to 320 graduates.

A native of Parkwood, Alabama, Worthy joined the GSW faculty in August 1999. She earned a bachelor’s in psychology from GSW, and a master’s and Ph.D. in psychology from Auburn University.
