On Wednesday, December 7, 2016, Americus Police Officer Nicholas Smarr and Georgia Southwestern State University Public Safety Officer Jody Smith responded to a domestic violence call that tragically took their lives. The officers were best friends and had graduated from high school and the police academy together. Officer Smarr passed away on December 7, and Officer Smith passed away on December 8, 2016.

In the wake of this tragedy, GSW hosted a prayer vigil lead by GSW’s Sigma Chi Fraternity in honor and memory of fallen Americus Police Officer Nicholas Smarr and GSW Officer Jody Smith. GSW also hosted the funerals of Officers Smarr and Smith, which were attended by thousands of law enforcement officers from Georgia and across the United States.

On April 27, 2017 the University renamed the Public Safety building the “Nicholas Smarr and Jody Smith Memorial Building.”
