PRINCIPAL’S WELCOME
TED KOSICKI, PRINCIPAL
More about the student’s. More about celebrating. More about our wonderful events. This edition of the Fairlawn is a true representation of what makes GMAS different. Scrolling through the pages gives one an idea of the richness and variety of events that our students are able to participate in across the various sub schools. The front cover encapsulates happy and confident student’s in our beautiful region. The format of the Fairlawn has changed to reflect happenings within the school with more of a student focus. I trust you will enjoy looking through this edition and that it will give everyone a sense of pride in what is actually accomplished at GMAS in a relatively short period of time. In this issue we captured mostly outside of the academic environment.

FOUNDATION DAY
GMAS TURNS 18! It was a special fun filled day celebrating our beautiful school. The significant morning started with a whole school Eucharist, where we reflected back to 2003. A lovely morning tea was served for our Foundation Students and parents, who had been with GMAS from Kindy. It was great to see so many courageous performers at the GMAS Talent Search, their peers encouraging and cheering them on in the GMAS spirit. We are so proud of our history and community here at GMAS and look forward to our continuing journey. Friday 12 February 2021

Primary School This year I have the honor of leading our wonderful GMAS Primary School, with the support of Deputy Head of Primary, Sarah Snow, Administration Assistant, Mrs Karen Beynon, and our amazing Primary staff. As an educational leader, I couldn’t have asked for a better team of professional, committed educators to work with. As with any busy and vibrant environment, time just seems to fly by, and Term 1 at GMAS has been no exception. Students have engaged in a rich array of academic, cultural, artistic, creative and innovative programs. The many opportunities offered to our students at GMAS serve to inspire and challenge each individual to reach their unique potential. I look forward to continuing to be a part of their learning journey in the coming terms, supporting them along the way, and to share in their successes.

HEAD OF MIDDLE SCHOOL
LISA NESS HEAD OF MIDDLE SCHOOL
Middle School Well, here we are at the end of what I think has been the shortest term we have ever had! Losing week 1 to COVID lockdown and the last week of term being camp week, we were left with only 7 weeks of actual school. It is no wonder we often feel that life is in the fast lane and we feel time poor! I must admit it has been a bit of a shock to me after having enjoyed the last 6 months on long service leave. What are the secrets to having a great year? I believe the single most important factor for having a great year as well as being successful and happy is OUR attitude. The attitude we bring to every situation has a huge impact on how we see and react to everything we face. If we think of our attitude as we would a camera lens – attitude can affect what we focus on, can act as a filter and there for impact greatly on how we ‘see’ things that happen around us. We all have a choice when it comes to our attitude. We need to be aware of our attitude and make a choice on how much we will allow situations to impact our attitude. Once we accept this choice we can then decide whether or not to keep it or shape it into an attitude that brings more satisfaction, happiness and therefore allowing more success. “Learn to ignore what you can’t control and learn to control what you can.” Dr Peter Hanson Remember – we control our attitude, not the other way around! SAILING ENCOURAGING A LOVE FOR THE OUTDOORS As part of the 2021 Year 11 and 12 Outdoor Education Course, we are undertaking a sailing program. We visit the Yacht Club weekly to put our skippering and sail control skills into play before we head off to Shark Bay on The Sea Trek Camp in Term 2. We will sail up the coast, camping and exploring remote areas and National Parks. We have all completed our Recreational Skippers Ticket to assist us on our journey. As individuals, we are learning how to both skipper and control a sailboat, while also as a class learning how to work in teams and communicate so we can safely and successfully navigate our boats. Though this doesn’t come easily, in our theory classes we have been studying all the parts of a sailboat, understanding how they work as well as learning what to do in the case of an event such as capsizing. Sailing is a sport for anyone; it is fun, exciting, adventurous and liberating, giving you a different outlook on the ocean and the how you can explore it. by Tamsin Falconer

YEAR 12 BALL 2021 PULLING OUT ALL THE STOPS FOR A GREAT NIGHT The arrivals began at 5:30pm, with parents, grandparents and friends already lined up watching eagerly as our cars pulled up. The elaborate old and new cars made their way to Palmer Winery, where we exited with the assistance of Ms Fink and Mrs Snelson and strolled down the red carpet, stopping to get a picture by Mr Crossie. Finally we joined the rest of the cohort to watch our fellow peers do the same, after being met by Mr Treloar with a lavish mocktail. Soon after we made our way inside to the lake, deck and grassed area (which would soon transform into our dance floor). The GMAS group were to take the annual school ball photo by the lake. We then moved on to the introductions and thanks of the night from Year 12 Coordinator - Mr Deroost, Head Boy - Harry Bowden, Head Girl - Emily Hodder, SRC President - Josh Weed and finally grace by Head of Senior school - Mr Treloar. As soon as the sun set, the girls threw off their heels, and the boys their jackets, and we all hit the dance floor. The teachers were not afraid to join in with; Ms Burns, Ms Fink (even with a dislocated knee), Mrs Best, Mrs Forrest, Mrs Grosse, Mr Barraclough, Ms Verhaaf and Mrs Vogel all going hard, showing the kids how its done. Food was brought out regularly with fantastic service and our DJ (Paul Mac) really turning things up for the crowd. The dance floor was lit with glow sticks a plenty to add to the vibe. Ending the night at 10:30pm on the dot, the girls collected their shoes and partners and went out to find their rides home. The girls looked gorgeous and the guys looked “absolutely dapper.” Thanks to Palmer Winery for the fantastic food and service and the beautiful venue.

2021 STUDENT LEADERS At GMAS, leadership is viewed as a way of serving others in the community. Our student leaders require a high degree of individual responsibility in upholding the ideals and expectations of the school, while guiding and mentoring younger students. We are very pleased to introduce to you our Student Leaders for 2021. Congratulations to each of you and we look forward to seeing you grow into your leadership roles! Stay tuned for our next edition when we introduce the rest of our Middle and Junior School Leaders and find out what they have been up to.
SENIOR SCHOOL HEAD BOY
Harrison Bowden
Hello, my name is Harrison Bowden and I am the GMAS Head Boy for 2021. Part of my role is to represent students and their interests in the way the school is run, and help make positive changes where we can. I am part of the Service Portfolio this year and am excited to have the opportunity to help GMAS become more involved in the wider community. I want all students to know they are welcome to approach us with their ideas. I’m looking forward to working with our leadership group this year, and am grateful for the opportunity I’ve been given to build on the positive learning environment we have at GMAS.
SENIOR SCHOOL HEAD GIRL Hi, my name is Emily Hodder and I have been given the opportunity to be the Head girl at GMAS for 2021. I am also privileged to be a part of the Service Portfolio alongside Kira Wood and Harry Bowden. As a portfolio we hope to increase communications between schools regarding service, creating a platform that students in the community can be a part of to help share awareness of services applicable in our city. Service is a great way to contribute to the community, meet new people and increase your personal experience of the world. I look forward to not only improving service in our school and community but having an impact on all the other portfolios my peers have initiated.

JUNIOR SCHOOL HEAD BOY
Zane Lucev
Hi, my name is Zane Lucev and I have been lucky enough to be given the privilege of being the 2021 Junior School Head Boy. My strengths are simple – they are really all of my great friends! We are very fortunate this year to have an extraordinary Leadership and Year 6 group, that ALL have fantastic attitudes, and who will lead this school to many team and individual successes during the school year, as well as into the future. I am a strong believer that the schools four values can be measured in all our successes and failures in a balanced manner. Our successes can lead us to valuable attitudes and exciting challenges, and our failures are a scope for improvement, which will build resilience and perseverance. Both of these things are needed to become a better person or a better school. I hope to be a great example in relation to these values, a friend to all GMAS school companions, and the wider GMAS community. Our year is going to be a great one, with every day being worthwhile.
JUNIOR SCHOOL HEAD GIRL My name is Daley Kelly and I am the 2021 Junior school Head Girl. I am looking forward to helping the Junior School students and being part of the amazing leadership team this year. I really enjoy helping people and making our school the best it can be. I believe that our school offers us so many wonderful opportunities for us to strive for the best education along with all of the sports and co-curricular activities. I am very grateful to be a part of the GMAS community. I am always willing to listen to any of your ideas or answer any questions so please don’t be shy, come and say hello. Daley Kelly

Josh Weed
Hi, my name is Josh Weed, and I am very excited to be a part of the senior school leadership team representing the Sustainability Portfolio alongside the role of SRC president. In my role as SRC president I hope I can make some positive changes to our learning community by utilising the ideas that students wish to implement into the school environment. Alongside Macklin O’Reilly as part of the sustainability portfolio I also wish to reduce the overall impact our school has on the environment while also spreading awareness about this issue which will affect all of the students and staff at GMAS throughout their lives.
A warm hello, I am Taya Johnson, Flinders Captain for the leadership team of 2021. I am an enthusiastic Student Council Representative and am a member of the School Spirit and Wellness Portfolio alongside Molly Kiernan. Given this opportunity, I hope to raise awareness and bring a positive light to the GMAS community, both inside and outside our school walls. I aim to encourage students to recognise the powerful potential that they hold, in spreading kindness and fostering our school’s spirit. Taya Johnson Hello, my name is Molly Kiernan and I’m a part of the Student Representative Council and a member of the School Spirit and Wellness Portfolio along with Taya Johnson. This year my goal is to spread awareness on the importance of mental health and also spread kindness and positivity around our community. Overall, my aim, as a leader, is to be an approachable person student’s can come up to and talk to me if they’re struggling or having a hard time. I’m looking forward to an exciting year and an optimistic rest of 2021. Molly Kiernan Hi, my name is Macklin O’Reilly and I am the 2021 Bunker House Captain. I also join Joshua Weed as a part of the Sustainability Portfolio. My goals for this portfolio are to increase environmental awareness in the school community and promote a lifestyle which positively affects the physical world that we live in. I wish to inspire all members of the school to live a life that not only reduces damage to our earth but actually has a positive impact on the world we live in. Macklin O’Reilly
Isabella Rogers
Hello, my name is Isabella Rogers, and I am a part of the Student Representative Council for 2021. I am thrilled to be a part of this wonderful leadership team in creating opportunities and positive changes for our GMAS community and our future. This year I am member of the Arts Portfolio and I represent the year 10 cohort. I work alongside Mark Schaap to create as many opportunities as possible for the artists of our school to shine either on stage, in the exhibit or in the cinema. Art is a valued matter to me since it allows our students to self-express, expand their creativity and dwell into the world of beauty. I wish everyone a happy and safe 2021.
Hello, My name is Mark Schaap and I am a member of the 2021 Student Representative Council. I am also a member of the Arts Portfolio. Arts at GMAS has been a huge part of my personal development turning me into the confident person I am today. My goal for this year is to get as many people involved in the arts in some way and allow them to gain both the personal and social benefits that the accepting and loving arts community provides. Mark Schaap Hi, my name is Kira Wood and I am the Geographe House Captain for 2020. This year I endeavour, along with the leadership team, to bring about positive change to our school and create a pleasant and safe working environment for both staff and students. Together with Harry Bowden and Emily Hodder as a part of the Service Portfolio, we are looking forward to uniting GMAS and presenting more opportunities for service, in order to give back to our wider community. Rising Stars TANNER VOGEL NATIONAL BASKETBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 1 Tanner Vogel (Year 12) has had a very memorable month. At 6 foot 9 and still growing, basketball was his sport of choice. Tanner received some very exciting news recently, he was asked to be a contracted player in the NBL1 WEST League (National Basketball League Division 1) for the South West Slammers. An amazing opportunity, Tanner will play against some of the best players in the State at the top level and, for the first time, play at this level with his older brother Travis (ex GMAS student) in the same team. Tanner also played with the GMAS Senior Boys Team, that took out first place, in the South West ACC Basketball Championship Tournament, the Busselton Amateur Basketball Associations Men’s ‘A’Grade Division for the 2020 - 2021 season and the Bunbury Basketball Association Men’s A grade competition for the 2020 – 2021 season. Congratulations and Good Luck Tanner.

HIGHEST FUNDRAISING TEAM FOR 2021 On Saturday 27 March the Georgiana Molloy Anglican School Relay for Life Team attended this year’s Relay at the Busselton foreshore organised by GMAS teacher Jacinta Busher. 2021 was a shortened and modified event (due to COVID restrictions) but the team were feeling incredibly lucky and happy to be attending the event, given that last years was cancelled. The Team spent the day walking laps (representing the forward march of Cancer as well as Cancer Research) with the aweinspiring Drew West from Year 8 walking 74 laps for the team! The crew also sold pot plants, beach gear, homemade jams and chutneys, hand-knitted beanies, freshly baked muffins and anything else they could think of to add to the overall donations to the Cancer Council.

GMAS parent, Mrs Joanna Stephenson, won the ‘Miss Relay’ 2021 competition “strutting her stuff up on the stage and racing throughout Busselton rattling her donation tin” Jacinta said. Jacinta mentioned that the Yellow Submarine ‘Box Car’ was a great photo opportunity for the kids but alas the wheels fell off (literally) when it was raced. ”Valiantly operated by four students and Mrs Forrest (who knobble the Wood N Leg’s Team with a bump worthy of a GWS player) it had to be carried in second last” Jacinta laughed. The crew was exhausted but then totally thrilled when it was announced that GMAS was the highest Fundraising Team for 2021! Presented with a framed certificate up on stage Jacinta said “it was wonderful to know that we had contributed to the best of our abilities under somewhat trialling circumstances”. A huge thank you to all the team members who walked and helped on the day: Drew and Chase West (and Family), Sandie McCombie, Alex Franklin, Ava Marchant, Lacey Heys, Joanna Stephenson, Mrs Forrest, Mrs Ness, Erinlea Forrest, Miss Stefanou, Miss Fink, Miss Uchanski, ex staff member Mrs Mewett and ex-student Ashlynn Forrest. A particular mention must go to Lacey Heys and Ava Marchant both in Year 7 who individually raised between them $584.00. Amazing effort girls, just amazing! If you would like to join the team, please contact Jacinta Busher via: jbr@gmas.wa.edu.au. CHALLENGE IS EVERYWHERE The word “challenge” has a wide area of meaning, among these are “testing one’s ability, endurance, a challenging course, a challenging ELEANOR LEWIN CHAIR OF SCHOOL COUNCIL
game, stimulating, interesting and thought provoking, a challenging suggestion” the list goes on.

Chaplain’s Easter Message Food - As we know there are many ways to prepare the same meal. I could come to a table that is beautifully laid out with fancy table ware, with a large T-bone steak, mashed potatoes, parsley peas, a sculptured salad garnished with cheese, and a Pavlova piled high with strawberries and whipped cream. A second kind of the same meal could consist of one huge bowl of food served on a bare table with the steak, the peas, the mashed potatoes, the salad, and the Pavlova, all mixed together. The 2 meals are equally nourishing but not equally appetizing. The way we internalize or think and externalize or show our faith and beliefs can have just as much variation. Our Faith in God is also to be enjoyed and experienced. Easter also has different ways we can prepare for it. The Journey of Easter starts with Jesus’s triumphant entry into Jerusalem, the crowds gather and palm branches are waved to welcome the king. This is Palm Sunday. A few days later Jesus gathers with his friends for the Last Supper he is arrested, this is Maundy Thursday, the following day he is crucified, hung on a cross to die, this is Good Friday. Three days later the tomb where his body was laid is empty, He is Risen, this is Easter Sunday, and the day we get the chocolates. The season of Easter lasting 50 days not one is the journey from being hailed as king, to death, then to resurrection. Easter Sunday and the season of Easter is born as the season of new life and renewal. Some of the ways we live out our faith and relate with God are just as appealing or unappealing as the different ways a meal can be prepared but can be equally nourishing. The lessons we learn from Easter is that even though bad things happen in life if we hang in there long enough, we allow for good things to happen also.

In looking back on the history of our school Georgiana Molloy Anglican School (GMAS) we faced from the very beginning challenges to build this school. Fr Tom Wilmot (now Bp Tom retired) formed the first School Steering Committee in 1997 with the aim to build an Anglican School in this region. There were many challenges along the way, one by one they were overcome and here we are today in our 18th Year celebrating our “challenge”. During the week of our Foundation Day celebrations Ms Jo Burns said: “From small beginnings, we have come a long way and made some incredible milestones in regards to achievement in sporting, cultural and academic endeavours”. At the beginning of this year Mr Kosicki issued this challenge: Mr Kosicki quoted philosopher Will Durant: “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” Let’s start this year off right and make active learning our habit in every class in 2021. Our GMAS Junior girls tennis team were challenged in February when they competed against a number of other regional teams in the 2021 Sun Smart Schools Tennis Classic and were crowned the South West Herbert Edwards Cup Girls Champions. Mr Connor Martin, set two separate challenges for Early Childhood and Junior School students. To the Early Childhood students, the challenge was for them to carry their own bag at drop off and pick up times, rather than an adult doing it for them. This is to assist with building resilience and installing a sense of personal responsibility. To the Junior School students, the challenge for them was to be vigilant with litter around the school, and to model our school value of Respecting Our Environment to others by picking up any litter that they see laying around. Mr Martin has observed, both challenges have been taken up well. Mr Kosicki on congratulating all the competitors in our recent swimming carnivals said “I commend those swimmers who found some races and the distance to swim challenging. These swimmers did their very best in adverse circumstances and gained much valued House Points for their respective teams, they also faced up to their inner challenges – and won. Each swimmer was a winner on the day! Challenge is everywhere, each and every day at Georgiana Molloy Anglican School.
CONGRATULATIONS JUSTINE
We are so proud of Justine here at GMAS so we shone the spotlight in her direction to share and showcase her amazing passion for life and helping others. Justine tell us about your career? After graduating university, I worked for the Commonwealth Bank. One of my jobs in the Bank was to do promotional panels for job vacancies and helping young people find a position that suited their skills and gifts. My family ran a commercial laundry in Busselton for 15 years, it was during this time that our connections with GMAS began. Our children started at GMAS on the day the school opened in 2003. I began teaching Italian at GMAS in 2006. Ten years later I took on the role of Christian and Religious Studies Teacher, having begun to study a Graduate Diploma in Chaplaincy in 2014. It was at this point that I began to discern the call to ordained ministry. I was ordained a deacon in November 2019.
with the students is a huge privilege. One of the things that brings me great joy working in the secondary school is talking to kids about their passions and helping them find the right pathway. What is a typical day like for you? I wake early and prepare for my day in a very mindful and prayerful way. My school days are full, with teaching, organising things for chapel, meeting with students or staff. After school, I sometimes have meetings, otherwise I will prepare for the next day or do some study. My evenings are less eventful, cooking and sharing an evening meal with the family, and I tend to fall asleep quite early. The church has a custom of saying daily offices, and I say prayers at the end of the day, as well as at the beginning. What role do you play in your community? I have been a Board member of Saint Mary’s Community Care for 15 years, and very involved in a local children’s charity called BUZ, which runs social and emotional well-being programs in schools. I am also involved with the GMAS Sustainability Committee and our diocesan Sustainable Living Working Party. I am passionate about caring for God’s creation and simple living.
What are your fondest moments at GMAS? I love my interactions with the students and staff. I teach so many students there are very few that leave this school in Year 12 whom I have not taught. The pastoral nature of my job and being able to share the highs and lows of life
