FUTURE GENERATIONS Here at GMAS, we see merit in creating a school culture that instils a sense of social and environmental responsibility within our students.

Working on the premise that knowledge translates into conscious action, sustainability issues are widely explored as part of the K-12 curriculum.

Students as young as four are introduced to the concepts of climate change, waste management and gardening through a combination of educational activities and real-life practices, including composting food scraps, recycling and minimising lunch box waste.

We also create time and space for our young students to explore and connect with the land through nature play and investigations.

Sustainable practices are reflected in the school grounds and buildings, including the installation of solar panels on the Science and Technology block and Early Learning Centre, an organic vegetable garden and an aquaponics facility.

Produce from the garden is sent to the CafÊ and turned into delicious, healthy meals, and everyone is encouraged to review their use of plastics by participating in Waste Free Wednesdays – an initiative which is picking up momentum across the school.

Students and staff also have the opportunity to join the sustainability committee, who have been tasked with educating the school community to protect and value the environment.

The committee has already delivered several successful initiatives in previous years, including the annual Treasure Not Trash initiative, tree planting, sustainability talks and workshops for making boomerang bags and beeswax wraps.

These small actions may seem like a grassroots effort to address an overwhelming global issue, but we firmly believe that by encouraging students to make conscious choices to care for their world now, they will develop lifelong habits and convictions that will contribute to a sustainable future for generations to follow.

A few weeks ago, we left a whiteboard in front of the Library with the question ‘where do you see the world in 25 years?’ We left this in the hope that we would discover how students at GMAS view their own future.

If you haven’t already done so, I encourage you to ask yourself, where do you see the world in 25 years? If you are disappointed with what you imagine, you are lucky enough to have the ability to shape how it really turns out.

Sitting next to you at GMAS are future marine biologists, politicians, world leaders, tradies, Olympic athletes and everything in between. If each of us can begin working on making the future a better place by taking advantage of the opportunities we are being presented with now, who knows what we will achieve in 25 years.

Some of you may be thinking, ‘but I imagine a future in which sustainability, love and equality are championed’, and to those people I say make it happen. In the words of Gandhi, be the change you wish to see in the world.

Primary School I was recently asked what makes GMAS special. Is it our academic program? Is it our sports prowess? Are we leaders in the arts? Or is it because our students are respectful? My response… it is a combination of all these things.

GMAS provides a balance of opportunities allowing our students to discover what makes them shine. And shine they have!

Students rejoiced in service by supporting our Mother’s Day stall and breakfast, and celebrating National Walk to School Day. Students exhibited sportsmanship during the Cross Country Carnival and Winter Games Day. Our P&FA organised a successful Beach Book Fair and Rainbow Disco, which were supported by our entire school community.

Our littlest learners have studied transport and explored the wonder and joy of fairy tales.

Term 2 has included obligatory evaluations in the form of NAPLAN and Semester 2 reports. The progress I have witnessed cannot simply be measured in these forms. I have seen such determination, perseverance, hope and purpose in all areas of our students’ learning., so shine on!

READY, SET, GLOW! Students from Kindy to Year 6 bopped ‘til they dropped at the P&FA Primary School Disco on Friday 14 June. This year’s rainbow theme saw the MAC transformed into a spectacular display of vibrant colours. Together with the sea of glow sticks bouncing around in the smoky haze, it really was the perfect backdrop for our little groovers to dance the night away!

PRIMARY SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY GOING THE DISTANCE ON CARNIVAL DAY

The team spirit was soaring as students from Pre-Primary to Year 2 gathered together to compete in the 2019 Primary School Cross Country Carnival. Our Pre-Primary cohort gave it their all for their first ever carnival and for the most part, had huge smiles on their faces crossing the finish line.

It was heartwarming to see some of our older students running alongside younger competitors, encouraging them to push through their final laps.

A CELEBRATION OF STRINGS On Friday 31 May, the Junior String players presented a solo string recital in the MAC. Soloists from Pre-Primary to Year 6 peformed on stage on violins, violas and cellos. It was a wonderful celebration of strings and showcased the hard work and progress that these young musicians are making with their music. The concert finished with a rousing performance by the Junior Orchestra playing Aeolian Rock and Broadway or Bust Blues. Friends and family enjoyed the concert, and everyone shared afternoon tea at the conclusion.

MORNING TEA RAISES FUNDS FOR CANCER Halfway through Term 2, our Year 9 students hosted the GMAS Biggest Morning Tea to help raise awareness and funds for the Cancer Council.

BARBAGALLO RACEWAY VISITING THE HOME OF MOTORSPORT Eleven Pedal Prix students recently attended the V8 Supercar race at Barbagello Wanneroo Raceway in Perth on Friday 3 May. The students watched some of the qualifying heats for the Supercars as well as some support category races. Students also had a tour of the pit area with the competing teams and spoke to the drivers involved. Autograph sessions were a particular highlight and Father Earle even managed to get one of the all-time great drivers to sign a shirt to add to the GMAS Hall of Fame.

SHARK BAY SEA TREK

At the end of term, the Year 11 Outdoor Education students ventured north to Shark Bay to participate in a week long sailing and camping adventure.

After a cold first night at Galena Bridge, the students continued on to Denham where they spent five days sailing and five nights camping on remote beaches. The students were required to prepare food and cook dinners on trangias, whist ensuring they abided by the ‘leave no trace’ principles.

The sailing conditions provided students an ideal opportunity to demonstrate their sailing skills, whilst participating as a team, taking leadership roles, and navigating the open waters of Shark Bay. Surrounded by pristine waters and natural red cliffs, this was a great experience for students and staff. Thank you to Mr Greg Wood and Ms Georgia Gregory for their time, leadership and great cooking on the camp.

A STICKY SUBJECT SECONDARY SCHOOL

Year 12 student Andrew Symonds has been leading the charge on a very special science project involving some rather unusual critters.

Widely recognised around school as ‘the guy with the stick insects’, Andrew one day hopes to pursue a career involving the interaction between humans and animals. Below, Andrew shares more about his interest in these strange creatures.

“I do not love stick insects. I am fascinated by all living things. In a schooling environment we are limited to what we can ethically study and so stick insects, being low maintenance, seemed appropriate. Many schools around Australia house stick insects and I requested that we get some in.

I was recently invited down to the Early Learning Centre to show the Kindy and Pre-Primary students some of the stuff they can look forward to in upper school. I was honoured to do so and took it as an opportunity to stand in the shoes of the late Steve Irwin, Malcom Douglas and the living legend Harry Butler,

instilling a lifelong interest and grounding the idea that animals aren’t just annoying pests walking around aimlessly waiting to inconvenience us at the first chance they get.

So what exactly are stick insects? GMAS, much to the surprise of our Principal, is home to seven spiny leaf insects or Extatosoma Titarium. We have two males, four females and a nymph (baby).

Still growing, they will reach a length of up to 20cm long. Despite their threatening look and uncanny resemblance to a scorpion/ praying mantis hybrid, they are strictly vegetarian and only eat eucalyptus leaves.

Native to Queensland, they require a tropical habitat. To protect them from our temperate weather, they are housed in a purpose built terrarium. They will live for two to three years and once they reach sexual maturity they will lay one to five eggs every day for the rest of their lives. They are able to reproduce asexually, making the males almost completely useless apart from the genetic variation they provide.”

The stick insects in GMAS are currently being used in an investigation on their ability to camouflage. The report is still in its early stages and will be entered into a national competition.

Another successful Secondary School Cross Country Carnival done and dusted! The cool weather didn’t dampen the team spirit on carnival day. We had some great races and impressive times this year. A huge congratulations to all those who participated and tried their best during training in sports lessons and on race day. Thank you to those who assisted with logistics and timekeeping.

SECONDARY SCHOOL ATHLETICS CARNIVAL The weather turned it on for carnival day and the track and field areas were dry and well prepared. House colours were dominant throughout the day and participation was excellent for most year groups. Flinders were declared the winning house at the end of the day, with Bunker coming in a close second place. An entertaining caterpillar/piggy back race was held at the end in celebration of the Year 12 students completing their last GMAS carnival. Well done to all involved.

Poppy and Yasmin Fowler, Keeley Foster, Stella Copeta, Taya Johnson, Maddison Rice and Ella Young competed in the 2019 Gymnastics WA Interschool Carnival held from 26-28 June at the State Gymnastics Centre in Perth. Our amazing gymnasts were awarded 1st place in the Teams Award. Ella Young also won 1st place in the All Around Award for her floor vault and beam combined scores.

MADDIE FENWICK

During the April school holidays, Maddie competed in the WA Gold Performance team at the U15 Australian Hockey Championships in New South Wales.

WA Gold progressed to the gold medal match against Victoria and finished the tournament with a silver medal.

Maddie was awarded Player of the Match against both NSW and SA. She was also awarded Fairest and Best against QLD and NT. Maddie scored six goals, finishing as the third top goal scorer for the U15 girls.

TOM GOLDSMITH

Tom Goldsmith (Year 8) recently competed in the Green Bushes Pink Fun Run, in aid of breast cancer research. During this event he broke records for both the Junior 15km Bike Ride and the 5km Run. An amazing achievement for an incredible cause.

CHLOE AYLING

Chloe Ayling (Year 11) has been accepted into the 2019 UN Youth Middle East Experience. She is only one of two students to be selected from Western Australia. Chloe will travel through the Middle East to meet with political leaders and human rights activists and gain a first hand understanding of the peace works taking place.

HANNAH BOWDEN

Year 12 Head Girl Hannah Bowden has been named the Lions Australia Youth of the Year for 2019. Hannah travelled to Geelong to represent WA at the national finals in May. She competed against five other finalists, only to take out the national title. In recognition of Hannah’s achievement, Lions Australia generously gifted the school $1,000 to go towards improving the leadership capabilities of students.

Well done to the following GMAS students selected (after three trials) to represent the Leeuwin Naturaliste Junior Soccer Association at Western QBE Country Week Soccer in Perth during the October school holidays: Emily, Lincoln and Justin Hodder, Lacey Heys, Nash White (pictured), Sarah Percy, Cooper Jones, Matthew Weed, Leonado Marques, Aston Keough, Lenny Hemblen, Jamie Liston, Matthew Hunt, Lucas Harper, James Doney and Toby Hunter.

Emily, Lacey, Aston, Leonardo, Justin, Lucas, Nash and Jamie have also been selected into the Goldfields State team competing in the Singa Cup or Phuket Cup later this year. Well done on your amazing achievement!

Congratulations to Pollyanna Deroost in Year 3 who competed in the Perth Dance Challenge in May. She made it through to the Championships at BREC to perform her solo ‘Walk the Dinosaur’. Pollyanna studies ballet, hip hop, tumbling, jazz, tap and acrobatics.

MUSIC IN MAY

The annual Music in May Concert was held on the evening of Thursday 16 May in the GMAS MAC. We were once again treated to a wonderful night of musical entertainment with an array of talented performances. Some new ensembles also took to the stage for the first time, such as the Flute Choir and Celtic Strings.

Another successful instalment of a favourite event for many.

This term has seen the Bunbury Performing Arts Eisteddfod come and go. This is a great opportunity for our budding artists as they get to perform at the Bunbury Regional Entertainment Centre and receive feedback from nationally respected adjudicators.

GMAS participated with its music ensembles as well as many individual solo student and dance entries.

We would also like to acknowledge the hard work and great teaching by our dedicated team of instrumental music tutors here at GMAS.

SENIOR MUSIC DAY TOUR

TAKING MUSIC ON THE ROAD A large group of Secondary School music students embarked on a day tour in May to perform at Dunsborough’s Cornerstone Christian College and Our Lady of the Cape Primary School. These visits featured entertaining items from ensembles including the Senior Jazz Band, Senior Choir, Senior Orchestra, the Celtic Strings and our Year 9 Rock Band Sonatay.

A brief lunch time visit to the town’s Lions Park gave the opportunity to play in a more relaxed setting.

All performances were masterfully hosted by Shae Cartledge-Giovinazzo and Sarah Aldridge and the performing experience was greatly enhanced by the high energy of the audiences.

WA YOUTH JAZZ ORCHESTRA MUSIC & THE ARTS

VISITING MUSICIANS SHOWCASE WAYJO presented a Jazz for Juniors concert for our Primary School students as part of their South West tour in May. They showcased their band instruments, explaining how they work before performing several pieces for us. They then picked students from the audience to have a go.

It was particularly impressive to hear the WAYJO soloists. Not only did they show such mastery and confidence with their music, but they were having so much fun playing jazz music. This has been a great opportunity for us to learn from these committed and skilled performers.

It is wonderful to know that our Year 4 Band program is preparing our students to possibly join the Jazz Orchestra one day. All it takes is practice, practice and more practice!

ASC PIANO COMPETITION

On Wednesday 19 June the seventh ASC Piano Competition was held at Peter Moyes Anglican Community School in Perth. A record number of 180 competitors from 10 of the 14 ASC Schools came together to compete in six categories.

Out of five categories GMAS were awarded as follows: Faith category: 1st place Tahnee Wilson (Eloise Martin was a commendable top 3 in her heat) Respect category: 1st place Christian and Sydney Blair Justice category: 2nd place Sydney Blair Integrity category: 2nd place Christian Blair The Overall Excellence Award: 3rd place Christian and Sydney Blair.

THERE WILL BE DRAMA! On Thursday 23 May, the first drama concert night for the year was held in the MAC. People who attended had nothing but praise for the budding thespians.

Overall, you could say the theme was quite dark as Year 11 and 12 ATAR students performed excerpts from The Shifting Heart, dealing with racism in Australia during the 50s. Year 12 students performed Abandon All Hope - a series of devised dramas from the very confronting play Parramatta Girls. On the funnier side, there were an abundance of pregnant roles being acted throughout the night with Year 10 students performing The Waiting Womb and Year 11 students having a heaviliy pregnant character in their play. The Year 9s performed Greek Chorus excerpts while Year 7 and 8 students performed some very slick mime acts. Well done to all those involved in making the night a success.

CONFIRMATION BAPTISM 2019

PENTECOST SUNDAY CELEBRATIONS The GMAS community joined with the parish of St Mary’s on the day of Pentecost. We celebrated with nine confirmations, six baptisms and four receptions into communicant membership. Five GMAS staff, two parents and seven students were included.

This was the 13th Confirmation Baptism service in the history of GMAS, and the first occasion for Bishop Ian Coutts to preach, celebrate and officiate. A special thanks to Mr Philip Watts and the GMAS music scholars for providing the uplifting worship music we all enjoyed.

JOY AT GMAS

I’ve noticed of late how people are outraged.

Outraged at a whole manner of things from decisions in sport, the price of power, road rules, traffic, and sometimes even religious commentary.

People are outraged and offended more than ever in my opinion. All this outrage reminds me of the great painting called The Last Supper by wellknown artist Leonardo da Vinci.

Have you ever googled this painting and seen the images that pop up on your screen? You can find versions for The Simpsons, Star Wars, Marvel, Lego... pretty much anything! Some even portray a supper table overflowing with well-known fast foods.

It’s an outrage and I’m sure many are offended by the desecration and sacrilege to religion and art.

But if you think about it, that painting is as much as anything about someone’s dying wish. It is about Jesus and its significance and impact is greatly enhanced.

Amongst The Simpsons and Marvel superheroes, you also see groups of friends in contemporary settings re-enacting the same picture. The point is Jesus wanted to be with his closest friends at an important time of his life and share a meal with them. Just like we still do today.

Aren’t we fortunate to have art to make us think, to inspire outrage and to teach us lessons. Pax.

Our Head Girl, Hannah Bowden was named the Lions Australia Youth of the Year for 2019, competing against five other finalists to take out the national title.

The Year 3 Strings Graduation Ceremony was held in the MAC towards the end of term and it was a ‘joy’ to behold the young students playing their various instruments with such dedication.

Pentecost Sunday on 19 June was a ‘joyous’ occasion at St Mary’s Family Centre. Several students together with one teacher and the parents of one of our students were Baptised followed by their Confirmation.

Four teachers were then received and welcomed into the communion of the Anglican Church. The ceremonies were conducted by Bishop Ian Coutts, Bishop of Bunbury.

Upon presentation of the ceremonial candle to each candidate Bishop Ian reminded them all of the words “Shine as a light in the world to the glory of God the Father”. Truly this was a day of great ‘joy’.

On Wednesday 19 June a small group of our piano students travelled to Perth to take part in the ASC Piano Competition. 180 students from 10 ASC schools took part and of the 22 finalists, our students were awarded several prizes in their categories. As they received their awards, the look of ‘joy’ on their faces was a sight to behold. It is indeed a ‘joy’ to be part of the GMAS Family.
