We have come a long way from Tuesday 4 February 2003, when 128 students arrived at GMAS for the very first time. Today, GMAS is ‘home’ for over 1,200 students and 136 staff across four sub schools.

SHAVING THE WORLD FROM CANCER Three GMAS students, Skye O’Connor (Year 7), Samantha Cox (Year 9) and Poppy Treloar (Year 11) all underwent a hair transformation to support blood cancer research.

The girls raised $625.65 towards the Leukaemia Foundation.

GMAS Head Girl Hannah Bowden will be representing WA in the district final of the Lions Youth of the Year competition, after being named the WA winner in March.

Hannah will travel to Geelong to attend the National final held during the Lions Multiple District Convention on Monday 6 May. She will compete against five other state finalists from around Australia.

The Youth of the Year project is designed to give young people the opportunity to develop their leadership, networking and public speaking skills, ahead of their chosen higher education or career pathway.

Keen to pursue a career in politics and international relations after she graduates from GMAS, Hannah believes in seeking out and making the most of the many opportunities and experiences on offer, both at GMAS and in the wider community.

“Our education can be whatever you want to make it. It can take you halfway around the world, it can inspire you. Education is sport, service, music, arts, maths, science, politics. ASPIRING TO INSPIRE

On the backfoot of receiving the Zonta Club of Dunsborough’s Outstanding Woman of the Year Award 2018, Year 12 student Shae Cartledge-Giovinazzo has now been presented the special award of Young Woman in Public Affairs in 2019.

This award recognises young women who demonstrate superior leadership skills and a commitment to public service and civic causes.

Upon receiving this award at a regional level, Shae’s application has now moved to the state level of processing, meaning that all Zonta branches in WA enter their top application to continue the award process. Below, Shae shares with us what sparked her interest in a subject close to her heart.

“In 2015 I discovered Womankind Worldwide, a charity which advocates for women’s rights, raising money for women in countries which need it most. After researching the issues worldwide and the drastic punishments inflicted on women, and what other women did to assist, I decided to shave my hair to raise funds. Through the support of my school and online, I was able to raise over $800 for the charity, as well as educate my classmates about how fortunate we are to live in a country with even basic human rights. It was the start of a passion for supporting others that I still hold today.

Although I feel extremely fortunate to be a young woman in Australia, women who advocate for their own rights are being criticised for their beliefs in the public eye. This is causing young people to shy away from advocating for their rights, and ultimately become disinterested in the vital issues because they believe that nothing will ever change.

Resolution means bridging the gap between fear and progress, and involving all people in the solution to introduce true equality into our society. I strive to use art forms such as film and speaking to inspire young people, as well as continue the constant encouragement of women currently in progress. Most of all, I aim to help women support other women, because that is the most important step. I aspire to inspire other women.”

A FUTURE IN FOREIGN RELATIONS EMPOWER & INSPIRE

After an inspiring experience as an exchange student in Japan, Year

12

student Lochie Gibson developed a keen interest in political and foreign affairs, resulting in him being selected from over 800 students nation-wide to attend the 24th National Schools Constitutional Convention in Canberra, held in March of this year. The convention provided students with a unique forum for high level debate around Australia’s constitution, and the opportunity to participate in a mock referendum. ”I think building your knowledge of politics and foreign affairs helps you understand the position Australia is in, what is happening in

Mazey O’Reilly (Class of 2018) has been awarded a George Alexander Foundation scholarship to attend Murdoch University in 2019. Valued at $24,000 over three years, the scholarship helps manage the high cost of living in Perth which is a significant barrier to higher education for students from rural areas.

THE NATURAL RIGHTS OF PRIMARY SCHOOL

CHILDREN The ‘right to wild’ is one which is actively embraced at GMAS, particularly among the younger year levels, where the outdoor spaces have been lovingly designed to provide as many natural environments as possible.

Whether cloud watching, treasure hunting or tree climbing, barely a day passes where GMAS students can’t be seen out and about, exploring and experiencing the 15 hectares of open-plan land the school is situated on.

Primary School Welcome to the first edition of our newest publication!

I am blessed in my role, to visit all 25 classes making up our amazing Primary School on a daily basis, seeing our lucky students engaging with and participating in a rich array of academic, cultural, artistic, creative and innovative programs.

Students have hoop dived and built sandcastles at the Early Childhood Beach Carnival, while older students have challenged their personal bests and shone in the pool at the Junior School Swimming Carnival.

Beebots have been programmed to follow pathways and escape mazes, as well as ‘We Do’ Lego creations spinning, moving and performing tasks designed by their coders. Speaker’s Cup finalists upped the ante this year, delivering creative and entertaining speeches, with the annual trophy being awarded to Mitchell Binning who emulated Aussie wildlife hero, Steve Irwin.

The Year 3 Strings program, along with the Year 4 and 5 band programs have continued to thrive, and the Junior School Showstoppers choir performance at Foundation Day was extraordinary. Colourful art projects adorn the ELC art atelier, and the kitchen gardens are shaping up to produce bumper crops once again this year. Students are cooking up a storm using a variety of ingredients from the gardens, learning important life skills in the kitchen.

The many opportunities offered to our students this term continue to inspire and shape their futures. My proudest moments include watching them connect and interact with one another using confidence, kindness and respect. I am in awe of their many triumphs and look forward to seeing their continued progress in the coming terms.

SWIMMING CARNIVAL TEAM SPIRIT SOARS ON CARNIVAL DAY The Junior School Interhouse Swimming Carnival was a spectacular display of colour, team spirit and sportsmanship as our Years 3-6 students gave it all they had in each and every swimming event.

Flinders took out winning place with 731 points, followed closely by Bunker (672 points) and Hamelin (671 points). A huge thank you to the staff and parents who offered their support in ensuring a great day was had by all.

A NAME? Along the rambling banks of the Vasse River lies a Victorian Georgian house believed to be the oldest dwelling within the Busselton region.

Built in 1839, ‘Fairlawn’ was once home to Busselton’s first magistrate Captain John Molloy and his wife Georgiana Molloy, our school Patron.

It is this special colonial homestead which has inspired the naming of our new publication. The Fairlawn will be curated each term and will complement our existing communications by highlighting school events and achievements.

Welcome to the inaugural edition of ‘The Fairlawn’. This is an apt choice of title to acknowledge our Patron, Georgiana Molloy. Part of Georgiana’s education was to botanize, she must have had a natural aptitude for this, as later events were to show.

She did her best with her original colonial garden in Augusta, sowed the seeds from home, and those from the Cape of Good Hope. The Molloy family moved to the Vasse district where Georgiana continued her passion for botany.

Georgiana died in 1843 and was buried in a field at Fairlawn near Busselton; her grave was surrounded by Spikey Yucca Lillies that she had brought with her from Augusta. The Yucca Gloriosa she brought with her to the colony grow thickly still in the field where she was originally buried.

The Easter Bunny recently visited my own home but the Easter message will not stop there. Easter is the most important event in the Christian calendar so important in fact that we get not one but two public holidays.

If it is important enough for us to receive the holidays I believe that it is important for us to celebrate the real occasion.

The life of Jesus is eternal. His message lives on if we continue to live our lives with the intention of making this world a better place.

Jesus was killed because what he said made sense, people were listening and following in his example. He was a great threat to those in authority because he challenged laws that were unjust and were widening the gap between the ‘haves’ and the ‘have-nots’.

Jesus caused people to question the ways people acted towards each other and he spent time listening to the outcast. Not one to be influenced by popularity, he was concerned only with equality and justice.

We can all make a difference and we can all make this world a better place to live, it starts with us and it starts with random acts of kindness.

I encourage you to go to church this Easter season and beyond to listen to that still quiet voice within all of us that is crying out to be heard.

CODE CAMP GMAS’ CODING SUPERHEROES

GMAS hosted it’s first ever Code Camp during the summer holidays.

Over the course of two days, participants mastered the coding skills required to design and program their first computer game with a hero and a baddie. After two days, the children published their computer game to share with family and friends. Code Camp returned to GMAS on 23 and 24 April to teach students in years 2-6 to code, or to continue them on their coding journey. Thank you to Mrs Carolyn Herring for making it all possible.

SECONDARY SCHOOL SWIMMING CARNIVAL

On Wednesday 27 Febraury, students from Years 7-12 attended the Geographe Leisure Centre for the annual Secondary School interhouse swimming carnival. With temperatures soaring into the mid-30s, the atmosphere was electric as students cheered, sang and swam their way to the finish line in a wonderful display of camaraderie.

Thank you to the many parents and staff who volunteered in various roles throughout the carnival, in particular to the GMAS Swim Club and the P&FA.

MUSIC AT GMAS Learning music from a young age has been associated with a myriad of benefits for growing minds, including improved literacy, numeracy, social and behavioural skills.

Students from Pre-Primary to Year 9 are afforded the opportunity to learn and experience a wide range of musical styles through listening, performing, composition, theory and aural activities.

Students explore ideas and feeling by creating and making music. They investigate aspects of sound and use specific skills, techniques and processes to plan, present and respond to musical works.

Music becomes an elective subject at GMAS for students in Years 10-12, focusing on film, scoring and song writing techniques.

MUSIC MAYHEM FOR 2020 TOUR A huge thank you to the students, parents and staff for putting on a great show at the Music Mayhem Quiz Night.

B U S S E LT O N FRINGE FESTIVAL The Busselton Fringe Festival saw three GMAS drama classes performing at the WELD Theatre on Saturday 2 March in a special schools’ drama show. The Year 10 class performed ‘The Brick and the Rose’, the Year 11s performed ‘The Three Wise Men’s Younger Dumb Brothers’ and the Year 12s performed a scene from ‘A Tear from a Glass Eye’. All students showed their unbridled acting talent to a very receptive audience!
