Sandra Mathias, Ph.D., received her B.S. in Music Education from the State University of New York at Fredonia; Master of Arts (with Orff concentration) from Ball State University; Kodály Certificate from The Kodály Center of America; and Ph.D. in Music Education from The Ohio State University. Dr. Mathias is currently the Artistic Director of the Columbus Children’s Choir. She conducts the New World Singers, the premiere, touring ensemble of this organization. Under her direction, the choir has performed at national conferences of OAKE, AOSA, ACDA, and MENC. .he choir has also appeared at the Breckenridge Music Festival and the Grand Teton Music Festival. She has prepared the choir for appearances with the National Repertory Orchestra, the Chautauqua Symphony, and the Columbus Symphony Orchestra.

Dr. Mathias has been the guest conductor for choral festivals throughout the United States. She has served as a guest teacher of the Kodaly philosophy in the United States and Hungary. She has presented papers at conferences in the U.S., Hungary, Australia, England, and China. Dr. Mathias is a Past President of the Organization of American Kodály Educators. .She is currently serving as the R & S Chair of Children’s Choirs for the Ohio Choral Directors’ Association. Dr. Mathias is the recipient of the Kodály Intézetért, the Columbus Symphony Orchestra Community Music Educator of the Year, the Southside Settlement House Arts Freedom Award, and the Outstanding Educator Award from OAKE.

Debbie Looney, a Gainesville native, received a Bachelor of Arts in Piano and Vocal Performance and Music Education, Summa Cum Laude, from Brenau College. She holds a Masters Degree in Music Education from the University of Georgia. Mrs. Looney has experience at the elementary, middle and high school levels and was a private piano and voice teacher for 22 years. Her teaching experiences include the Dawson County School System from 1976-1978, Brenau Academy from 1965-1989, and Oakwood and Flowery Branch Elementary Schools from 1989-1993. She was Oakwood’s Teacher of the Year in 1992. Mrs. Looney was choral director at West Hall Middle School from 1993-2008, where her choruses consistently received Superior Ratings in both Performance and Sight Reading at Large Group Performance Evaluations. West Hall Middle School Choruses were twice selected to perform at the GMEA In-Service Conference in Savannah, in 1996 and 2000. Mrs. Looney is currently the choral director at Davis Middle School.

Mrs. Looney is in much demand as a clinician and adjudicator. She has directed and accompanied numerous Honor Choruses throughout the state and was the Director of the 2006 Sixth Grade Statewide Honor Chorus. Mrs. Looney is a GMEA Certified Adjudicator and a GMEA Mentor. She serves as Choral Chair for District Nine and is a member of the Music Educators National Conference, Georgia Music Educators Association and the American Choral Directors Association. Mrs. Looney resides in

Gainesville with her husband, Doug, a retired choral director. She has a daughter and son-inlaw, Heather and Patrick Lowery, and a little granddaughter, Elena, who live in South Carolina.

Alan Raines, frequent guest conductor and sought after clinician with choruses throughout the United States, is the Director of Choral Activities and Associate Professor of Music at Stetson University. A recipient of the M.M. and D.M.A. degrees in Choral Conducting at UCLA, Raines served as the Assistant Conductor of the Angeles Chorale while as a student of Donald Neuen. Prior appointments include Georgia State University and the University of La Verne. Raines’ choirs have performed throughout Europe and the United States with invitations to perform for the National Collegiate Choral Organization and regional conventions of the American Choral Directors Association, Music Educators National Conference and the Georgia Music Educators Association. Raines is a Co-Artistic Director of the Elysium Chamber Orchestra and Chorus in Atlanta, Georgia. His group and performances have been hailed by Pierre Ruhe and the Atlanta Journal Constitution as “being one of the finest in the region” and “Raines’ Mozart Requiem was the most memorable in many seasons.”

Raines’ professional engagements have taken him throughout most of the major cities in the United States, Canada and abroad with guest appearances at Moscow State University, the London Virtuosi in Wells, U.K. and Musica Angelica of Los Angeles. He is the first American invited to guest conduct the Chonan City Choir and Orchestra in Chonan City, South Korea. His schedule this year includes appearances in Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Ohio, Mississippi, Alabama and Oklahoma. As Director of Choral Activities, Raines conducts the 52 voice select Concert Choir and the 250 member Choral Union, teaches conducting and administrates the large and varied choral program at Stetson. Raines is a member of MENC, FVA, FMEA, Pi Kappa Lambda and ACDA. An active arranger, his publications of chansons and lieder are under the auspices of Alliance Music Publications, Inc. and Walton Music.

Dr. Hilary Apfelstadt is Professor of Choral Studies and Director of Choral Activities at the Ohio State University where she conducts the Chorale, the Women’s Glee Club, teaches conducting, and coordinates the graduate conducting program. Her choirs have performed at regional and national conventions of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) and at state and regional conferences of the National Association of Music Education (MENC). She has conducted many honor choirs and all-state choruses in the United States and has guest conducted in Cuba, England and Switzerland. She is nationally recognized for her work with women’s choirs and her knowledge of treble choral literature. A prolific author, she has published more than seventy articles on choral music in various refereed journals. She is a contributor to a forthcoming ACDA monograph: Women in Choral Music.

Currently the national President of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA), Dr. Apfelstadt was a member of the Robert Shaw Festival Singers for several years. A native of Canada, she holds a diploma in piano performance from the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, and earned degrees in choral music education from the University of Toronto, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In addition to her current position at the Ohio State University, she is Director of Music at Linworth United Methodist Church in Columbus.

Dr. Seelig holds four degrees, including Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of North Texas and the Diploma in Lieder and Oratorio from the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria. He is the Artistic Director Emeritus of the world-renowned Turtle Creek Chorale which he conducted for 20 years and has been on the adjunct music faculty at the Meadows School for the Arts at Southern Methodist University since 1996. His early training was as a singer, having made his European operatic debut at the Staatsoper in St. Gallen, Switzerland and his solo recital debut at Carnegie Hall in 1991.

He has 3 books on choral technique including the best-selling, The Perfect Blend, The Perfect Rehearsal, and The Perfect Choral Workbook. Dr. Seelig continues a busy guest conducting schedule with workshop appearances throughout the U.S., Canada and Europe. His 37 recordings with the Turtle Creek Chorale set new standards for male choral music, including the Billboard classical top 10. He is also featured on two PBS documentaries, including an Emmy award. Dr. Seelig is known for his enthusiasm and sense of humor. Grammy Magazine says, “Dr. Seelig takes eclecticism to new heights.�

Anton Armstrong, Tosdal Professor of Music at St. Olaf College, became the fourth conductor of the St. Olaf Choir in 1990 after ten years in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where he had served on the faculty of Calvin College and led the Grand Rapids Symphony Chorus and the St. Cecilia Youth Chorale. Dr. Armstrong is a graduate of St. Olaf College and earned advanced degrees at the University of Illinois and Michigan State University. In January 2006, Baylor University selected Anton Armstrong from a field of 118 distinguished nominees to receive the Robert Foster Cherry Award for Great Teaching. The award is designed to honor great teachers, to stimulate discussion in the academy about the value of teaching and to encourage departments and institutions to value their own great teachers.

Active nationally and internationally as a guest conductor and lecturer, Anton Armstrong has frequently conducted ensembles and appeared before regional, national, and international gatherings of the American Choral Directors Association, Music Educators National Conference, Choristers Guild, American Guild of Organists, Association of Lutheran Church Musicians, Organization of American Kodaly Educators, the Orff-Schulwerk Association and the International Federation of Choral Music. In recent years he has guest conducted such noted ensembles as the Utah Symphony and Symphony Chorus, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, the Westminster Choir and the American Boychoir. He has also collaborated in concert with Bobby McFerrin and Garrison Keillor.
