Linda J. Gammon is currently the director of middle school bands at Rachel Carson Middle School in Fairfax County, VA. She is a native of Dover-Foxcroft, Maine and received her Bachelor of Science degree in music education from Clarion University of Pennsylvania and a Master of Arts degree in conducting from George Mason University.

Under Ms. Gammon’s direction, her middle school bands have earned consistent superior ratings, awards, and enjoy state, regional and national recognition including the 1993 and 2000 Mid-West International Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago. In 1997 Ms. Gammon and the Robinson Middle School Symphonic Band were awarded the prestigious John Philip Sousa Foundation Sudler Silver Cup Award, the highest honor bestowed on a middle school band program. Ms. Gammon currently serves as the VMEA Conference Coordinator and is a Past President of the Virginia Music Educators Association, the Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors Association, and the Fairfax County Band Directors Association.

During the school year, Ms. Gammon is active as an adjudicator, guest conductor, and clinician. She is a contributing author to the music curriculum “Band Expressions” published by Alfred and “Teaching Music through Performance in Band” published by GIA. She has been recognized twice by the School Band and Orchestra Magazine as one of the “Fifty Directors Who Make A Difference”, awarded numerous National Band Association “Citations of Excellence” and recognized by the Women Band Directors International as 2003 Scroll of Excellence recipient. In 2007 Ms. Gammon was awarded the Virginia Outstanding Music Educator of the Year Award.

Michael Sweeney is currently Director of Band Publications for Hal Leonard Corporation in Milwaukee, WI one of the largest publishers of printed music in the world. Michael is directly responsible for the development, production, recording and marketing of new publications for school bands. In addition, he contributes as a composer and arranger in all instrumental areas, and is particularly known for his writing at the younger levels for concert band and jazz.

Since joining the company in 1982, Hal Leonard has published over 500 of his compositions and arrangements. Mr. Sweeney is a 1977 graduate of Indiana University (Bloomington), where he earned a bachelor's degree in music education and studied composition with Bernard Heiden, John Eaton and Donald Erb. Prior to working for Hal Leonard he was a band director in Ohio and Indiana, working with successful concert, jazz and marching programs at all levels from elementary to high school. A winner of multiple ASCAP awards, his Ancient Voices (1994) and Imperium (1992) are featured in the acclaimed Teaching Music Through Performance series by GIA Publications. Other works such as Black Forest Overture (1996), The Forge of Vulcan (1997), Distant Thunder of the Sacred Forest (2003) and Celtic Air & Dance (2007) have become staples in the repertoire for middle school bands. He has received commissions ranging from middle school and high school bands to the Eastman Wind Ensemble and Canadian Brass. His works appear on numerous state contest lists and his music is regularly performed throughout the world. Michael is also in demand as a clinician and conductor for honor bands and festivals. Michael resides in the Milwaukee area where he enjoys fishing and playing the bodhrán.

William Owens is a native of Gary, Indiana. He is a seasoned music educator and very active as a composer, clinician and conductor throughout the United States and Canada. His compositional style for young ensembles display a practical, erudite approach which has firmly established him as a leader in the field. Since 1993, Mr. Owens has written over 150 commissioned and published works for concert band, string orchestra and small ensemble. His music has been performed at prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall and the Midwest Clinic, and appears on required music lists both nationally and abroad. Principal commissions include those from the the California Band Directors Association, the Florida Bandmasters Association, the Iowa Bandmasters Association, the South Plains College (TX) Department of Fine Arts and the Texas University Interscholastic League. His compositions "Courtlandt County Festival" and "Maesong" have been recorded and analyzed in educational text by the GIA series Teaching Music Through Performance In Band. William is a 1985 graduate of VanderCook College of Music in Chicago. He is a consistent winner of the ASCAPlus award, and a two-time winner of the Forrest L. Buchtel Citation for Excellence in Band Composition. Professional memberships include the American Society of Composers Authors and Publishers (ASCAP), theAmerican Composers Forum (ACF), the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA), and the Association of Texas Small School Bands (ATSSB). Mr. Owens teaches instrumental music in the Everman (TX) Independent School District. He serves as the Instrumental Editorial Assistant for the FJH Music Company and is the Conductor/Music Director of the Mansfield (TX) Wind Symphony. In his spare time, he enjoys sightseeing and reading, particularly motivational material and Presidential biography. He is an American muscle car enthusiast and a regular at car shows and auctions in north Texas.

William resides in Fort Worth, Texas with his wife and best friend, Georgia.

Lieutenant Colonel Don Schofield is the Commander and Conductor of The United States Air Force Academy Band in Colorado Springs Colorado. A native of Atlanta, Georgia, he earned a Bachelor of Music Education degree from the University of Georgia, a Master of Music degree from Louisiana State University and is a candidate for the Doctorate of Musical Arts degree from Boston University. Prior to his commissioning in the Air Force, Lt Col Schofield served as Director of Bands at Hardaway High School in Columbus, Georgia and Effingham County High School in Springfield, Georgia where he led a 275-member comprehensive band program to national and regional recognition. Lt Col Schofield has served as commander of the Band of the Air Force Reserve in Warner Robins, Georgia, the United States Air Force Band of Mid-America in Belleville, Illinois, the United States Air Force Band of Flight in Dayton, Ohio, and the tenth director of the United States Air Force Strings and Chamber Orchestra in Washington. D.C. In 2007, he was chosen to lead the United States Air Force Central Command Band, where he planned and led overseas performances for United States and coalition forces in Iraq, Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Africa, Kyrgyzstan, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, and Bahrain in direct support of combat operations IRAQI FREEDOM and ENDURING FREEDOM. Lt Col Schofield is the only member of the Department of Defense to be recognized for his musical leadership by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences as a two-time Top Four finalist for a prestigious Emmy Award. His 2011 performance of “Holiday Notes from Home” was broadcast to 177 countries worldwide, all United States embassies, all ships and submarines at sea and was televised across the nation to 60 million homes. Lt Col Schofield has conducted multiple performances at The Grand Ole Opry, the White House, the National Cathedral, Constitution Hall and has led international performances with artists such as Kid Rock, Little Big Town, Lee Ann Womack, Chris Daughtry, Gabrielle Iglesias, Carlos Mencia, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, Lonestar, Wynonna Judd, Naomi Judd, Robin Meade, Amy Grant, Clay Walker, Take 6, Diamond Rio, the Miracles, Lee Greenwood, Gary Morris, Brian McKnight and Gordon Goodwin. He has conducted ensembles ranging from professional symphonies to elementary school bands in 23 states and Puerto Rico and has received leadership awards from Air Mobility Command, Air Force Materiel Command, Air Force Reserve Command and the 11th Wing at Bolling Air Force base. Lt Col Schofield’s military decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal with one oak leaf cluster, the Air Force Commendation Medal with one oak leaf cluster, the Air Force Achievement Medal, the Expeditionary Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Air Force Outstanding Unit Ward and the Air Force Organizational Excellence Award.

Dr. James M. Bankhead became the Music Department Head at Utah State University July 1, 2011. He was previously Director, School of Music at Sam Houston State University, Huntsville, Texas. Dr. Bankhead received his Doctor of Musical Arts degree from The Catholic University of America, Washington, DC; the Master of Arts degree is from Central Michigan University; and, the Bachelor of Music degree from Utah State University. Before going to Sam Houston State in 2006, he was the Chair, Music Department at California State University, Chico 1994-2006.

In addition to his administrative leadership, he was director of bands, master’s degree advisor and conductor of the Opera Workshop orchestra. He was principal guest conductor of the Shasta Symphony Orchestra in Redding, CA, and he is a frequent guest conductor, clinician and music specialist at music events throughout the country.

Prior to his appointment at CSU, Chico, Dr. Bankhead was Executive Director of the Green Bay Symphony Orchestra and Producer at the Weidner Center for the Performing Arts. He produced shows, concerts and festivals involving artists ranging from Bill Cosby to the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Dr. Bankhead completed 22 years of military service in the Air Force retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. He served as Commander/Conductor of the United States Air Force Band in Washington 1985-1991 and Deputy Commander/Assistant Conductor of that organization from 1976-1985. Prior to that he was Chief of Bands and Music for the Air Force stationed at the Pentagon. He has conducted in all 50 states and 18 foreign countries.

Larry Gookin has been Director of Bands at Central Washington University since 1981. His fields of expertise include music education, wind literature, conducting, and low brass performance. He also has served as the Associate Chair and Coordinator of Graduate Studies.

Professor Gookin received the M.M. in Music Education from the University of Oregon School of Music in 1977 and the B.M in Music Education and Trombone Performance from the University of Montana in 1971. He taught band for 10 years in public schools in Montana and Oregon. Throughout his career, Gookin has received numerous honors and awards. He has appeared as clinician, adjudicator, and conductor in the United States, Canada, Japan, Southeast Asia, and Europe. He is former principal trombone of the Eugene and Yakima Symphony Orchestras, and is currently the Artistic Director and Conductor of the Seattle Wind Symphony. The Central Washington University Wind Ensemble has performed at the CBDNA National Conferences in Boulder and Seattle, the MENC in Minneapolis, the CBNDA Regional Conferences in Reno, the Western International Band Clinics in Seattle, and the State WMEA Conferences. Gookin is a performing artist for Yamaha Corporation.

A graduate of Wesleyan College and Northwestern University, Kathleen DeBerry Brungard has taught orchestra and strings, grades 1-12, in the public schools of Georgia, Arizona, Nevada, and Texas, and concert band, jazz band, and orchestra in California. Many of her elementary and secondary orchestras have performed for national, regional, and state music educator conventions.

Ms. DeBerry Brungard has been involved in curriculum development for the gifted and talented, and has written curriculum guides for strings at all levels of instruction. She has done extensive work with student teachers and served as a mentor teacher throughout her 31 years of public education.

Howard Hsu is the Music Director of the Valdosta (GA) Symphony Orchestra, the professional orchestra-in-residence at Valdosta State University comprised of faculty members, other professionals from a fivestate region, and students. Mr. Hsu also serves as Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Orchestra Studies at Valdosta State University.

He has performed with world-renowned artists such as violinists Robert McDuffie and Amy Schwartz Moretti, cellist Wendy Warner, pianists Alexander Ghindin and Alexander Schimpf, and the Empire Brass. In September 2013, he will conduct the U.S. premiere of Ned McGowan’s concerto for iPad and orchestra entitled Rotterdam Concerto 2, and has given the Georgia premieres of several Debussy/Matthews Preludes, Fernande Decruck’s Sonata for Saxophone and Orchestra, and Jonathan Bailey Holland’s Motor City Dance Mix. Through the Symphony’s Youth Concert Series, he has introduced live classical music to thousands of children in the area. Mr. Hsu has appeared as a guest conductor with the Hartford (CT) Symphony Orchestra, Macon (GA) Symphony, New Britain (CT) Symphony, and Bronx (NY) Arts Ensemble, with whom he conducted the world premiere of Eleanor Cory’s O’Keeffe’s Flora. Mr. Hsu was a Visiting Assistant Professor of Music at the University of Connecticut and Associate Conductor of the University of Connecticut Symphony Orchestra, and was Visiting Instructor of Music and Director of the Orchestra at Connecticut College. Mr. Hsu has worked closely with groups dedicated to training young musicians, including the Lake George (NY) Opera Festival, where he served as Associate Conductor and Music Director of the Apprentice opera scenes concerts. He has conducted the Georgia Music Educators Association District 12 High School Honor Symphony Orchestra, Massachusetts Music Educators Association Central District Senior High School Festival Orchestra, Governor’s Honors Program Orchestra (GA), Greater Waterbury (CT) Youth Symphony, and Greater Bridgeport (CT) Youth Orchestras.

Through the Hartford Symphony’s Mentoring Program he served as a Master Teaching Artist, and was a faculty member with The Harlem (NY) School of the Arts. Mr. Hsu received his D.M.A. from the University of Connecticut, his M.M. from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and his B.S. from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

Scott Laird is on the faculty of The North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics where he is Fine Arts Coordinator and Instructor of Music. He earned his B.S. in Music Education and his M.A. in Violin Performance from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He has been an active string educator, clinician, and conductor for over 25 years and his orchestras have been recognized for their superior and musically mature performances.

Laird is in demand as a guest conductor, has conducted many honors orchestras throughout the United States, and has presented at numerous regional and national conferences. In recent years, he has conducted the Maryland, South Carolina, Colorado, Florida, and Indiana All State Orchestras and at Interlochen Summer Arts Camp.

He earned his National Board Certification in 2004 and recertified in 2013. He has served as President of the NC Chapter of the American String Teachers Association and Chair of the NCMEA Orchestra Section. He has chaired ASTA’s National Committee on School Orchestras and Strings and was Co-Chair of ASTA’s 2013 National Solo Competition. He serves on the Board of Directors for KidZNotes, an El Sistema USA program in Durham, NC that provides classical music instruction to underprivileged children. Laird is an active performer on acoustic and electric violins and is known for his ability to lead and perform in both the classical and improvisatory arena. In addition, Laird serves as a sponsored artist and educational specialist for D’Addario Bowed Strings, Coda Bows, and NS Design Electric Violins.
