He holds a bachelor’s degree in music from James Madison University and a master’s degree from the University of Miami in Florida. His compositions have been performed worldwide at the state, national and international level. His active schedule of commissions and premieres has incorporated groups ranging from elementary schools to professional ensembles, including the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Miami Symphony Orchestra, University of Miami Wind Ensemble, Boston Brass, and the Dominion Brass Ensemble. In 2012, Mr. Balmages received the prestigious Albert Austin Harding Award from the American School Band Directors Association. He is also a 2010 winner of the Harvey G. Phillips Award for Compositional Excellence, presented by the International Tuba-Euphonium Association. As a conductor, Mr. Balmages enjoys engagements with numerous all-state and regional honor bands and orchestras along with university and professional groups. Notable guest conducting appearances have included the Midwest Clinic, Western International Band Clinic, National Association for Music Educators, American School Band Directors Association, CBDNA, the Kennedy Center, and Meyerhoff Symphony Hall. He has also served as an adjunct professor of instrumental conducting and Acting Symphonic Band Director at Towson University in Maryland. Currently, Mr. Balmages is the Director of Instrumental Publications for The FJH Music Company Inc. in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He resides in Baltimore with his wife Lisa and their two sons

Sean O’Loughlin Sean O’Loughlin is a fresh voice and a rising name in the music world. His music is characterized by vibrant rhythms, passionate melodies, and colorful scoring. Commissions from the Boston Pops Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra highlight and showcase his diverse musical abilities. As a conductor, he has led performances with the Boston Pops Orchestra, the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, the Minnesota Orchestra, the Vancouver Symphony, the Atlanta Symphony, the Baltimore Symphony, the Houston Symphony, the Victoria Symphony and the Seattle Symphony amongst others. He was the conductor and arranger for the critically acclaimed symphony tour with Sarah McLachlan. He was also the assistant conductor and arranger for a production of Sgt. Pepper Live in Las Vegas featuring the band Cheap Trick. Recent collaborations include such artists as Sarah McLachlan, Adele, Hall and Oates, Gloria Estefan, the Indigo Girls, Diana Krall, Itzhak Perlman, Natalie Merchant, Chris Isaak, Blue Man Group, Pink Martini, Brandi Carlile, The Decemberists, Martina McBride, Josh Ritter, Gloria Gaynor and others. The Los Angeles Times calls his orchestrations “...colorful” while adding “...even more dimension...” to the compositions.

Daily Variety heralds Sean’s writing as “most impressive ...” with a “wide range of coloring in the orchestra...” that “...adds heft and rolling energy.” Through his growing number of commissioned and published works, Sean is excited to continue contributing to the rich history of orchestral and wind band literature. His music is published by Carl Fischer and Hal Leonard.

As music director of the Wind Studies program and All State program, Mr. Kaufman oversaw and conducted the World Youth Wind Symphony, Interlochen Symphony Band, Intermediate Wind Symphony, Junior Band, and All State Band, Orchestra and Choir for 24 years. Michael Kaufman also served as Director of Bands at Grand Ledge High School from 1981 - 2008. Under Mr. Kaufman’s direction, the Grand Ledge Wind Symphony performed twice at the Midwest Clinic, twice at the College Band Directors National Association Midwestern Regional Convention, the National Band Association Biannual Convention, the Mid-Western Conference on Instrumental and Vocal Music four times, and the Western Michigan University Conference on Wind and Percussion Music three times. Mr. Kaufman received the Bachelor of Music Degree with honors from Michigan State University and the Master of Music Degree from the same institution. Active in professional music organizations, Mr. Kaufman has served in various offices of the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association and the National Band Association. Memberships include: the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association, the World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles, the National Band Association, the American School Band Director's Association, the College Band Directors National Association and the American Bandmasters Association.

Mr. Kaufman adjudicates various Music Festivals and is active as a guest clinician, conductor and adjudicator throughout the United States. Mr. Kaufman was elected MSBOA "Teacher of the Year," awarded the NBA Citation of Excellence twice, the ASBDA Stanbury Award, the Sudler Flag of Honor, the Michigan State University College of Education Crystal Apple award, and the MSU College of Music Marching Band Distinguished Alumni Award. He was elected to membership in the American Bandmasters Association in 1997. Several guest artists of international stature have appeared with the Grand Ledge Bands upon invitation from Mr. Kaufman. These include such distinguished composers, conductors, and performers as Karel Husa, Warren Benson, H. Owen Reed, David Maslanka, Leslie Bassett, Ross Lee Finney, Samuel Adler, Frank Ticheli, David Gillingham, Daniel McCarthy, H. Robert Reynolds, Frederick Fennell, Leonard Falcone, Dr. Harry Begian, Eugene Corporon, Claude T. Smith, Kenneth Bloomquist, John Whitwell, Ray Cramer, Frank Ell, Charles Vernon, Dr. Douglas Campbell, and many others.

He is a graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, where he received a Master of Music degree in French Horn Performance and studied with Boston Symphony principal hornist, Charles Kavalovski.

While at NEC, Mr. Rush studied conducting under Frank Battisti and Pascal Verrot.

He was a Concerto Competition winner and member of the Boston Philharmonic under Benjamin Zander. Mr. Rush received his Bachelor of Music degree from the University of South Carolina where he studied under Robert Pruzin and was the recipient of the Arthur Fraser Award for the Outstanding Graduating Senior in Music. In his fourteenth year as director of bands at Wando High School, Mr. Rush’s bands have received consistent Superior ratings in the areas of concert and marching band. The Wando Symphonic Band performed at the 2007 Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic and were the 2007 recipients of the Sudler Flag of Honor, administered by the John Philip Sousa Foundation. The Wando marching band was named a finalist at the Bands of America Grand National Championships in 2009 and 2011. Mr. Rush is active as a clinician and adjudicator throughout the United States. He has presented clinics at major conferences in twelve states, including the 2006 Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic, and has presented workshops at several universities and school districts. He is the author of two highly touted books, Habits of A Successful Band Director and The Evolution of A Successful Band Director for GIA Publications and has co-authored a new method book for band entitled Habits of A Successful Musician. He has been the recipient of the National Band Association’s Citation of Excellence on five occasions and was named Teacher of the Year in 2004. He is Nationally Board Certified by NBPTS. In 2010, Mr. Rush was elected into the prestigious American Bandmasters Association, and in 2011 was named to the Bandworld Legion of Honor administered by the John Philip Sousa Foundation. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the National Band Association and also serves as vice-president of the South Carolina Band Directors Association. Other professional affiliations include WASBE, Phi Beta Mu, and Phi Mu Alpha.

Anthony J. Maiello is Associate Director for Development, Professor of Music and University Professor. Professor Maiello conducts the GMU Repertory Orchestra and teaches Graduate and Undergraduate Conducting, Jazz Theory & Arranging and Advanced Sight-Singing. From 1996 to 2009, he conducted the GMU Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra. Under his direction, the ensembles at both Crane and George Mason University commissioned new works, made numerous recordings and appeared at national and international conferences. Professor Maiello also makes professional appearances both nationally and abroad conducting music festivals, adjudicating ensembles and presenting clinics, lectures and workshops throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, the Bahamas and Europe. He conducted musical activities for the Gold Medal Ceremonies at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York; served as Musical Director for Music Festivals International; was selected as President of International Association of Jazz Educators – New York State Chapter; and is a guest clinician for Yamaha Corporation and Warner Bros. Publications. In March of 2010, he was inducted into the Bands of America Hall of Fame at Music for All's Indianapolis headquarters. Professor Maiello’s professional recording credits include conducting the American Wind Symphony and additional studio ensembles for Alfred/Belwin Publications. Locally, Maiello has served as Associate Conductor of The McLean Orchestra, McLean, Virginia; been appointed an Honorary Conductor of The United States Navy Band, Washington, D.C.; and was a participant in the National Conducting Institute with Leonard Slatkin and the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C., to which he has provided his services as a cover conductor. Maiello received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Music Education from Ithaca College, Ithaca, New York in 1965 and 1967 respectively, and has extensive experience teaching in the public schools and at the university level. While at the Crane School of Music, Potsdam College of SUNY, Potsdam, New York, he served as a Professor of Music and Chairman of Performance, where he taught Advanced Instrumental Conducting, Applied Clarinet, Woodwind Techniques, Percussion Techniques and conducted the Crane Wind Ensemble. Throughout his career, Maiello has published musical compositions for string orchestra and is the author of “Conducting Nuances” (GIA Publications, Inc.); “Conducting: A Hands-On-Approach” (Warner Bros./Alfred Publications); and co-author of “The 21st Century Band Method” (Warner Bros./Alfred Publications). In 2007, Maiello was awarded the title of “University Professor” by the GMU Board of Visitors, the highest rank given to Mason faculty members. Maestro Maiello is the founder and Conductor/Artistic Director of the American Festival Pops Orchestra, a professional ensemble in the greater Washington, D.C. metropolitan area dedicated to promoting and performing American popular music.

He serves as administrative head of the university band program which currently enrolls over 800 students, serves as conductor of the University Wind Symphony, and is the director of the nationally famous “Fightin’ Texas Aggie Band.” Dr. Rhea holds degrees in music education and conducting from the University of Arkansas, Texas Tech University, and the University of Houston. Dr. Rhea has conducted the Texas A&M University Wind Symphony for conventions of the Texas Music Educators Association, the College Band Directors National Association, the Midwest International Band & Orchestra Clinic, Western International Band Clinic and the American Bandmasters Association.

Additional concerts have included Carnegie Hall, the Meyerson Symphony Center, and four European tours with performances in Ireland, England, Austria, Germany, and the Czech Republic. The TAMU Wind Symphony has released several internationally released recordings, all with Mark Records. Dr. Rhea maintains an internationally active schedule as conductor, clinician, and adjudicator. He has been extended invitations to membership in both the prestigious American Bandmasters Association and Phi Beta Mu. Dr. Rhea currently serves on the Boards of Directors of The American Bandmasters Association & The John Philip Sousa Foundation, and was formerly on the Board of Directors of the National Band Association. He additionally holds memberships in several related professional organizations.

Previously, Dr. Pope was an orchestra director for Maryville City Schools in Tennessee.

He also served as the Executive Director of the Tallahassee Youth Orchestras, and on the orchestral librarian staffs at the Aspen Summer Music Festival and Spoleto Music Festival USA. Dr. Pope received his bachelor's degree from The Florida State University, master's degree from the University of South Carolina, and Ph.D. in Music Education from The Florida State University.

Currently, Dr. Pope serves as a conductor and co-director at Florida State University’s String Orchestra Camp. As an active adjudicator and clinician, he has conducted honor orchestras and served as a guest artist for numerous middle and high school orchestra programs throughout the southeast. Dr. Pope has been a leader in the American String Teachers Association by serving as the President of the Florida State University ASTA chapter and on the Board of Directors in Tennessee. In 2009, Dr. Pope was the recipient of the Outstanding Young Music Educator award for the state of Tennessee.

ALL STATE NINTH AND TENTH GRADE ORCHESTRA Chelsea Tipton II, Conductor Evelyn Champion, Organizer Stacy Brown, Percussion Coordinator Poet and Peasant Overture……………………………….…….Franz von Suppé Greensleeves……………………………………………………………..Alfred Reed West Side Story………………………………………………..…..Bernstein (Mason) American conductor Chelsea Tipton II has won over audiences and critics alike with his vibrant musicality, accessibility, versatility, and extraordinary commitment to education. Tipton is now celebrating his fourth season as Music Director of The Symphony of Southeast Texas in Beaumont. As a sought-after guest conductor, Tipton has appeared with numerous major orchestras in the United States, including the Cleveland Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Houston Symphony Orchestra, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, Brooklyn Philharmonic, Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, Nashville Symphony Orchestra, Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and San Antonio Symphony Orchestra among others. During the summer of 2011, Tipton was part of an extensive European tour with pop artist Sting that took him to 15 countries and working with 19 different European orchestras. He prepared orchestras for the concerts and performed with Sting in concert in the Canary Islands, Granada and Cap Roig Spain. The 2012-13 season sees Tipton working with the Dohnanyi Orchestra Budafok (Budapest), Hilton Head Symphony, Lexington Philharmonic, New Haven Symphony, North Carolina Symphony and will be conducting Georgia All State Orchestra in Savannah. Tipton has conducted in Carnegie Hall conducting the Sphinx Competition Showcase gala concert that was the culmination of a ten city tour with the orchestra.Other highlights include a last minute replacement for Robert Spano to conduct an all-Gershwin season finale with the Brooklyn Philharmonic. The New York Times applauded Tipton for “[leading]sweeping and vibrant performances of “Rhapsody” and “An American in Paris.” Tipton earned a Master of Music degree in orchestral conducting from Northern Illinois University and a Bachelor of Music in Clarinet Performance from the Eastman School of Music, with additional studies at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, the Conductors Retreat at Medomak and the Pierre Monteux School for Conductors in Hancock, Maine.

Romeo and Juliet Fantasy-Overture…………………..Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky A uniquely versatile “musician’s musician,” John Whitney has distinguished himself in both classical and jazz arenas through his conducting, performance, composition, arranging, and teaching. The founding director of the Southern Tier Symphony, a fast-growing, regional orchestra based in Olean, New York, Whitney has led orchestras on three continents, including those in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia and Venezuela. In the U.S., he has served as guest conductor of the Dayton Philharmonic and Ohio Valley Symphony, Erie Philharmonic and Glens Falls Symphony in New York, and the New World, Westmoreland, Imperial and Brevard Symphonies in Florida. In addition, Whitney has conducted the Orlando Opera and served as music director for Ballet Orlando. Whitney has performed with and/or conducted for a host of platinum artists, including Luciano Pavarotti, Clark Terry, Frank Foster, Tony Bennett, Ray Charles, Dave Samuels, Buddy DeFranco, Henry Mancini, Cab Calloway, Liberace, Doc Severinson, Phil Woods and The Irish Tenors. As a violinist, he has performed at Walt Disney World and with symphonies of Syracuse, Utica, Elmira and Brevard. Internationally respected for his skills as a pedagogue, Whitney has taught conducting in Europe, presented workshops as a faculty member for American Symphony Orchestra League, and served as mentor to promising young American conductors. During his twenty-year career at University of Central Florida (UCF), Whitney served as director of both orchestral studies and the UCF Jazz Lab band, which he led in invited performances at Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland and North Sea Jazz Festival in Holland.

Recipient of acclaim for both his musicianship and his teaching, Whitney was selected sole American winner of the International Competition for Conductors in Czechoslovakia. UCF recognized Whitney for his excellence in teaching and leadership and named him premier faculty member in research and creative activities, a university-wide award. In addition, he has been invited to serve each summer since 2003 on faculty of the String Institute presented by the New York American String Teachers Association. In the past four years, Whitney’s orchestral arrangements have been performed at the Carnegie Hall “Link-UP!” youth concerts Alfred Publications, formerly Warner Brothers, and Theodore Presser Company have published more than forty of Whitney’s compositions and arrangements, and his “The Junk Food Blues” for string quartet was recorded by the Kronos Quartet. Whitney’s own discography includes jazz recordings by The John Whitney Trio. A native of Glens Falls, NY, Whitney earned music degrees from Ithaca College and New England Conservatory. In addition to his service at UCF, Whitney taught 22 years in New York public schools, including those in Long Beach, Olean, Ithaca and Camillus (West Genesee Central Schools), and served as director of strings for Buffalo Academy for Visual and Performing Arts.
