MESSAGE

I am excited to share with you great news about Georgia Military College and the positive impact we are having across the state of Georgia, both in our College program and in our Preparatory School (grades 6-12). As you know, GMC is an open admissions institution — we accept anyone into our college with a high school diploma or a GED. Striving to keep tuition affordable, our focus is on student success, making education more accessible and keeping operating costs as low as possible. We are fully accredited through the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), and were reaffirmed for another ten years, in June 2017, without a single finding, recommendation, or observation; a rare, positive achievement. We offer 24 Associate Degree programs, as well as three Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS) degree programs in Business Management, Supervision and Management, and Supply Chain Management and Logistics. GMC developed these three BAS degree programs to provide a pathway for technical college graduates who have an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree to obtain their four-year degree. We are excited that our first two students from the Technical College System of Georgia received their four-year degrees this fall! We offer non-traditional alternatives to facilitate a diverse student body, which is an important objective in the continued execution of GMC’s mission. We are also proud to be one of only four Military Junior Colleges in the nation, with select graduates being commissioned as U.S. Army officers in a federally approved two-year early commissioning program. In addition to the successes of our College, our Preparatory School continues to excel in meeting the mission of “developing the intellect and elevating the character” of the students we serve. We are a public, independent school serving not only our home of Baldwin County, but also nine other surrounding counties. For over 90 continuous years our Prep School has been accredited by AdvancEd/SACS/CASI with our faculty and administration all holding valid certificates issued by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission.

10-YEAR REAFFIRMATION REVIEW OF GMC APPROVED BY ACCREDITING BODY Georgia Military College is proud to announce the reaffirmation and continuation of its accreditation. At its annual meeting in June 2017, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges’ (SACSCOC) Board of Trustees made their decision to approve GMC’s reaffirmation for accreditation without any follow-up recommendation for the next ten years. This review process occurs every ten years for institutions of higher education. The SACSCOC accreditation process is built around a rigorous peer-review process that assesses the quality of all aspects of the institution, from student learning and services to faculty, programs, governance, management, facilities, and finance. This rigorous process helps ensure the fiscal and educational integrity of an institution. Lieutenant General William B. Caldwell IV, President of Georgia Military College, stated, “I am incredibly proud of our faculty and staff. It is their daily commitment and dedication to the GMC mission that contributes to the quality and integrity of GMC’s programs and services, and ultimately to the success of our students.” In September of 2016, SACSCOC’s on-site committee spent four days with GMC. Their visiting committee reviewed GMC to determine its compliance with 97 standards. These over-archMark A. ing standards included: academics, student services, library support, engineering support, and financial requirements. During this four day on-site review, the committee members also visited 6 of the 13 GMC campuses (Milledgeville, Fayetteville,

Stone Mountain, Dublin, the Online Campus, and Valdosta). After visiting these campuses and reviewing the 97 standards, the SACSCOC’s visiting committee delivered their results and reported GMC was in full compliance. The spirit of teamwork and cooperation between departments and campuses is credited with the institution’s overall success. “During the two-year period prior to the on-site committee’s review, faculty, staff, and administrators increased their time and focus on this very important endeavor. I believe that this extra effort resulted in GMC being in full compliance with no further response required by the SACSCOC on-site committee—on average, such results only occur for about 20% of the institutions at this point in the review process,” said Dr. Mike Homes, GMC’s Chief Academic Officer and Dean of Faculty. Randy New, GMC’s Chair of the Board of Trustees, echoed this sentiment, “These results are based on the hard work and commitment put forth by the leadership, faculty, and staff at GMC.” SACSCOC is the regional accrediting body in eleven U.S. Southern states and in Latin America for those institutions of higher education that award associate, baccalaureate, master’s or doctoral degrees.

An alumnus of GMC generously had four of the school’s historic cannons refurbished and carriages built, returning them to their original configuration of the 1800s. The barrels of the cannons were cast in 1862 and 1864. Two of the cannons are mounted at the front entrance of the new Military Science Building and two on the west entrance of the Old Capitol Building. All four of GMC’s cannons are registered in The National Register of Surviving Civil War Artillery.

Our cadets will start here, and when they exit these doors for the last time —they’ll be prepared to go anywhere and fight life’s greatest battles and win countless victories. We are pleased to dedicate Georgia Military College’s newest facility, “Victory Hall.”

GMC CADET CREST 1963 -- Major Grady Daniel designed an official military insignia for the school, and submitted to the Army for Military Heraldry.

1964 -- The submitted art was changed so that it would not too closely appear to duplicate or resemble the design of other military schools or units. It was approved for use.

Today -- the cadet crest is used as a patch on the uniforms worn by GMC’s Corps of Cadet. The image also graces the terrazzo floor of the new MSD Building.

GMC’s rich heritage is symbolized on the unit crest and this current version was approved and adopted in 1964. The ivy leaves represent a school of higher learning and alludes to our students’ academic achievement. The words on the crest are Opera Cum Fidelitate which is Latin for “To Work (or Serve) with Fidelity.” Service to others is an indicator of good character. The wall running diagonally from the upper-left to the lower-right represents the ramparts of the gates to Georgia Military College. The star represents the fact that the Department of the Army has recognized Georgia Military College as a National Military Honor School. Finally, red and black symbolize the school colors.

USERY FOUNDATION PRESENTS $4 MILLION GIFT LARGEST GIFT IN HISTORY OF GMC

Future students attending GMC’s Prep School were presented with a gift in 2017 in memory of The Honorable W.J “Bill’ Usery, Jr. New students will have their financial burden eased as they purchase their initial uniforms, thanks to a generous fund honoring the memory of Secretary Usery. In March 2017, Georgia Military College announced the establishment of the Usery Legacy Fund during GMC Prep School’s Usery Celebration. Doug Henne, the Executive Director of the Usery Foundation, was in attendance and announced a gift of $4,000,000 to be paid over the next two years to establish the fund. This fund honors, commemorates, and celebrates the life of The Honorable W.J. “Bill” Usery, Jr., who was a distinguished GMC Prep School alumnus, and former United States Secretary of Labor. Usery Legacy Fund PURPOSE.

To preserve in perpetuity the memory of a very distinguished Georgia Military

College Preparatory School alumnus, and former United States Secretary of Labor, the Honorable W. J. Usery, Jr. The income produced by this FUND will be used exclusively to support the GMC Preparatory School. This FUND shall have four components to honor, commemorate, and celebrate the life of Secretary Usery. Income produced by this FUND will be distributed in W. J. (BILL) USERY, JR. (HS’40) 1923 – 2016

GMC PREP SCHOOL UNIFORMS All New Students ________________________ Every sixth grader, and as funds are grown, any other first time student, to include additional grades that may be added in the future, will receive a school voucher up to 100% of the initial preparatory school uniform purchase requirement. The total purchase of these uniforms to include accessories is the equivalent of approximately $600.00 for SY 2016-17 (baseline year). The proceeds of this endowment will significantly defray the costs of the initial school uniform requirement, thus eliminating a financial barrier, while honoring Secretary Usery’s own personal experience of having worn a patched uniform while a student at GMC Prep. In addition, along with the uniform voucher, each student will receive in writing a tribute with a short explanation as to why Secretary Usery wanted to assist every future GMC Prep student with the cost of their uniforms.

8th Grade _________________ All GMC Prep eighth grade students will receive the biography pamphlet of The Honorable W. J. Usery, Jr. The students will read this pamphlet and discuss it in class during their eighth grade year. Upon reading the story and having had a discussion in class, each cadet will then receive what will be the military uniform ribbon named the “Usery Ribbon” symbolizing the first part of the GMC slogan of “Duty – Honor – Country” and “Character Above All”.

SECRETARY USERY FOUNDATIONS OF AMERICAN DEMOCRACY BOOK COLLECTION 10th Grade _________________ All GMC Prep tenth grade students will receive four books representing the foundations of democracy in the United States: The Declaration of Independence, the Constitution of the United States, George Washington’s Rules of Civility, and Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address, to supplement their educational requirement of tenth grade U.S. History.

SECRETARY USERY ESSAY CONTEST 12th Grade _________________ All GMC Prep twelfth grade students will write an essay as part of the Honorable W. J. Usery, Jr. Legacy Fund essay contest at the beginning of the school year. The contest will recognize and award the first, second, and third place winners with monetary awards (initially $1,500; $1,000; and $500) intended to further defray the expense of attending GMC Prep, or as a scholarship to the college of their choice.The theme of the essay will be a reflection of “What GMC Prep Has Meant to Me” or “The Impact GMC Has Had on Me”, to model Secretary Usery’s lifetime reflection of what being a student at GMC Prep meant to him.

The Georgia Military College Foundation exists to ensure that students at GMC have every opportunity to thrive, succeed, and become contributing members of our communities. GMC is the place where the principles of Duty, Honor, Country and Character Above All become the foundation upon which our students build their lives. I am pleased to report that the Foundation has never been in a stronger position to support this vital mission. Soon we will embark on a capital campaign and we are well prepared for this important endeavor. Private gifts and prudent investment strategies have helped the Foundation to achieve unprecedented growth during the past decade. Because of you, the total assets of The GMC Foundation has more than tripled during the past 10 fiscal years, from $5 million in 2007 to $17.71 million in 2017, due in part to revenue and investor performance throughout the years. ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIPS AND FUNDS The Georgia Military College Foundation gratefully acknowledges the generosity of donors to the following funds that are either building toward endowment or fully endowed, with individual market values of $25,000 to more than $1.5 million each. An endowed fund represents a “perpetual gift.” Income from the invested fund is used to fulfill the intended purpose, and any income in excess of the award is returned to the principal to grow the fund. THE MISSION STATEMENT The mission of Georgia Military College (GMC) is to produce educated citizens and contributing members of society in an environment conducive to the development of the intellect and character of its students, regardless of location or method of delivery. Junior college students are offered a liberal arts-based, two-year undergraduate curriculum designed to support student attainment of an associateâ€™s degree and prepare students for transfer to four-year colleges and universities. Students with an associate of applied science degree are offered a curriculum designed to support student attainment of a Bachelor of Applied Science degree. For selected college students who enroll in the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC), and for preparatory school students in the Junior ROTC program, GMC includes a military training and education component.
