Opening Keynote: How to Keep Rural Hospitals Independent and Viable Kevin Cook, Chief Executive Officer University of Mississippi Medical Center

Kevin Cook has served as CEO of University of Mississippi Medical Center Adult Hospitals and academic medical center since 2013. During his tenure, he has integrated physicians services, continued to grow one of the largest telemedicine services in the U.S., and developed many rural initiatives.

Cook will discuss strategies and tips for rural hospitals’ approaches to potential urban partners, and what rural hospitals can bring to the table through lessons learned.

Developing an Efficient Provider Credentialing and Enrollment Program is Key to Quicker Reimbursement Debbie Gorenz, President Joni Pompeo, Operations Director New Mexico Hospital Association

Debbie Gorenz has been with the New Mexico Hospital Association since 1983 and was tasked with developing its subsidiary, Hospital Services Corporation, in 1985. She has served as president of Hospital Services Corporation since its inception and has overseen the development of several programs and services, including credentials verifications and provider enrollment. She obtained her BBA and MBA from the University of New Mexico.

Joni Pompeo joined Hospital Services Corporation in 2018. She has an extensive health care background working in business development, service quality and strategic planning with health plans and hospital systems. She is a New Mexico native and obtained her BBA from the University of New Mexico.

Credentialing physicians and practitioners and then enrolling them with Medicare, Medicaid, and various contracted commercial payers can be time-consuming, complicated and costly for your facility. With the average hospital or provider group contracting with 15 or more health plans, most of which have specific processes and requirements, it’s not easy to get practitioners enrolled accurately and efficiently. Each additional day the process takes up is a day that a facility cannot bill. Groenz and Pompeo will discuss in-depth strategies to receiving quicker reimbursement.

Opioid Misuse Tool Michael Meit, Co-Director Walsh Center for Rural Health Analysis

Michael Meit serves as a senior fellow in NORC’s Public Health Research Department and as co-director of the NORC Walsh Center for Rural Health Analysis. He currently leads studies focused on rural and tribal health programs, health equity, opioid misuse, food insecurity, and the national public health agency accreditation program, among others. Recently, he led development of an Appalachian Regional Commission study, exploring Diseases of Despair in Appalachia, a companion Appalachian Overdose Mapping Tool, and the national expansion of that tool, the Opioid Misuse Community Assessment Tool. This is an interactive data visualization that integrates drug overdose mortality rates for counties in each of the 50 states with data on unemployment, poverty, and disability status, among others. The tool is designed to utilize data visualization in support of community health planning and response.

Michael will share this work and provide an in-depth look at the Opioid Misuse Community Assessment Tool.

Hurricane and Other Emergency Preparedness: What You Need to Know Rhett Partin, Senior Vice President, Clinical Services & Public Health Adrianne Feinberg, Director, Emergency Preparedness Georgia Hospital Association

One of the best ways to prepare for your next emergency is to become more familiar with the existing infrastructure to support your emergency response as well as to hear ďŹ rst-hand accounts of emergency response from your peers. In this session, a video will effectively illustrate the impact that Hurricane Michael had on rural hospitals. Following the video, GHA Emergency Preparedness program personnel will provide an overview of the statewide infrastructure designed to provide support to hospitals. Next, they will lead an informal discussion among CEOs directly impacted by Hurricane Michael.

Negativity Sucks: Leveraging Strengths and Assets to Improve Rural Health and Well-Being Michael Meit, Co-Director Walsh Center for Rural Health Analysis

Rural health research tends to focus on problems and deficits, often creating negative perceptions and narratives about rural communities. With funding from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the NORC Walsh Center for Rural Health Analysis conducted qualitative research that engaged over 400 national and regional stakeholders across 36 sectors to explore strengths and assets that can be leveraged to improve health and well-being in rural communities. Findings highlight that rural communities naturally collaborate across sectors to develop and implement programs and leverage assets such as social cohesion and creativity.

During this session, we will show how rural communities leverage assets to improve health and equity. We will also share asset-mapping techniques to promote a positive narrative around community health as well as resources to identify best practices for addressing community health issues in rural areas.

Randy Davis was named president and CEO of NorthCrest Health in October 2013. Prior to taking over as CEO, he held various roles on the senior leadership team at NorthCrest, including chief operating officer and chief information officer. NorthCrest Medical Center is consistently recognized as an “A” Hospital by e Leapfrog Group, and by e Joint Commission as a top performer on key quality measures concerning the treatment of heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia, and surgical care. NorthCrest has also been named an exemplar hospital by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement.

NorthCrest Medical Center’s participation in a real-time data network to deliver relevant alerts to providers has shown the ability to drive efficiency, improve provider relations through communication, improve patient satisfaction and connect the hospital beyond the local community. NorthCrest Medical Center is located in rural Spring eld, Tenn. about 45 minutes from Nashville and delivers care throughout northern middle Tennessee and southern Kentucky. Obtaining and distributing nearly real-time data has been imperative in understanding the needs of their patients and providers.

Chris Clark is president of the Georgia Chamber of Commerce. He is a Georgia native and graduate of Georgia Southern University and Georgia College and State University. Prior to joining the Chamber, Clark served as Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and as Deputy Commissioner for the Department of Economic Development. He is consistently named one of Georgia Trend Magazine’s 100 most influential Georgians and one of the Atlanta Business Chronicle’s most influential Atlantans.

Clark and the Georgia Chamber of Commerce have been very active in rural development initiatives throughout our state. With seemingly all of this focus on rural Georgia, Clark will share his perspective on the state of various initiatives and strategies (workforce, education, broadband and infrastructure).
