Dr. Jann L. Joseph has been the president of Georgia Gwinnett College (GGC) since 2019. Under her guidance, GGC has expanded its academic offerings, including new degrees such as the Bachelor of Science in health science and five nexus degrees for the entertainment industry. Joseph secured state support for major campus projects, including the Convocation Center that opened in late 2024. She also introduced men’s and women’s basketball to the GGC Athletics program.

During the pandemic, Joseph implemented strategic measures to support students and maintain the college’s financial stability. She also led the development of GGC’s strategic plans for 2023-2025 and 2025-2030. The second will capture the 25th anniversary vision for the college.

Actively engaged in educational leadership at various levels, Joseph chairs the University System of Georgia Council on General Education and supports the Executive Leadership Institute. She serves on several boards, including the Atlanta Regional Council for Higher Education, Gwinnett County Chamber of Commerce, Rowen Foundation and The Water Tower at Gwinnett. She is also an ardent supporter of Georgia Women in Higher Education.

Nationally, she chairs the American Council on Education Women’s Network Executive Council and is a member of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities Professional Development Committee. She is also a board member for the American Association of State Colleges and Universities and Higher Education Resource Services.

Joseph’s background includes bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of the West Indies, a doctorate from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and extensive experience in teaching, research and administration at several universities. She resides in Lawrenceville, Georgia, and draws inspiration from her three adult sons and their families.

Dr. Jann L. Joseph President, Georgia Gwinnett College

Dr. Deep J. Shah

Vice Chair-Elect, USG Board of Regents

Deep J. Shah, M.D., MSc, is the incoming vice chair of the University System of Georgia Board of Regents and an active member of the northeast Atlanta community. Dr. Shah is a practicing primary care physician and owner/operator at Gwinnett Clinic. An authority on health care delivery and health finance, Dr. Shah has published perspectives in the New England Journal of Medicine and the Journal of the American Medical Association. Dr. Shah has been named a Top Doctor by both Georgia Trend and Castle Connolly for the last several years.

In addition to Dr. Shah’s work at the clinic, he advocates for patients and physicians at the state and federal levels. He has won multiple leadership awards, including an Alpha Omega Alpha Fellowship. In 2021, Shah was appointed by Gov. Brian P. Kemp to serve on the board of Augusta University Health System (now Wellstar MCG Health). In 2022, he was named a director of Touchmark National Bank, an FDIC-insured minority deposit institution in Alpharetta. He now chairs the Loan Committee, focused on small businesses and entrepreneurs in the metro area.

A native Georgian, Dr. Shah graduated with highest honors from the University of Georgia as a Foundation Fellow. He won Truman and Rhodes scholarships to study at Oxford University, where he earned a master’s degree in social policy. Dr. Shah earned his medical degree from Harvard University and trained in internal medicine at Emory University. He and his wife are raising their three sons in Johns Creek, surrounded and supported by a large extended family.

SYMBOLISM AND TRADITIONS

Higher education is rich in symbolism and traditions, sometimes involving history that is hundreds of years old. Schools establish their own designs and meanings for aspects of this symbolism, creating imagery unique to each institution.

THE GGC SEAL

The GGC seal includes elements representative of the local and state communities, as well as the college’s four pillars of scholarship, leadership, service and creativity. It is used only for official academic or presidential communications and materials. The GGC logo fulfills all other identification needs.

THE GGC MACE

Derived from ancient weapons, maces were adapted for academic ceremonies and parliamentary occasions during the Middle Ages. GGC’s mace features a combination of materials symbolizing facets of the college and affiliated groups such as students, faculty, staff and the broader community. It is topped by a GGC green torch representing the light of education and its promise of a brighter future.

ACADEMIC DRESS

The traditions of academic dress or regalia date back to the 12th century when universities emerged from religious orders. Fabrics, patterns, colors, trimmings, robe length, hoods, tassels and other features are based on the wearer’s discipline, degree and granting institution. For formal academic events, GGC’s faculty appear in a wide variety of colorful regalia while college officials wear regalia specific to GGC.
