Congratulations!

Graduation day has arrived! Congratulations on earning your degree from Georgia’s designated public liberal arts university – and one of the finest universities in the state of Georgia. You should be so proud of this outstanding accomplishment.

Your graduation from Georgia College & State University coincides with the 30th anniversary of GCSU’s designation by the Board of Regents as the state’s public liberal arts university. Accordingly, you join decades of GCSU graduates who have developed the skills, competencies and knowledge to thrive in a complex and technologically-driven society. We hope you find that the value of your education increases every year going forward.

Please be sure to stay connected to Georgia College and stay in touch with our Alumni Office. Thank you for being a part of our campus, our community and our extended family. I look forward to following your continuing success.

You will always be part of the Bobcat Nation, and today we celebrate you!

Sincerely,

A HISTORY OF

GEORGIA COLLEGE & STATE UNIVERSITY

For more than 135 years, Georgia College & State University (GCSU) has served as a beacon of academic excellence, transformation and opportunity. The university has evolved to meet the changing needs of Georgia and beyond—remaining true to its core mission of preparing students for lives of meaningful service, leadership and lifelong learning.

Chartered in 1889 as Georgia Normal and Industrial College (GN&IC), the university’s initial mission was to prepare young women for careers in teaching or in industrial fields such as bookkeeping, domestic economy, dressmaking, photography, decorative art, and “occupations which are consistent with feminine refinement and modesty.” At a time when women had limited access to higher education and professional opportunities, the college provided a vital route to independence and self-sufficiency. When classes began on September 30, 1891, 88 students representing 52 Georgia counties were enrolled.

While $35,000 was appropriated by the state to open the college in 1889, additional funds were later allocated to support its growth. Atkinson Hall was constructed in 1896, Terrell Hall in 1908, Parks Hall in 1911, and Ennis Hall in 1920—four historic buildings that still grace the front of GCSU’s campus.

In 1917, GN&IC was granted the authority to offer fouryear degrees, the first of which was awarded in 1921. That same decade saw the college expand its curriculum to include cultural enrichment and liberal arts offerings — an early step toward the broad, integrative liberal arts mission it embraces today.

Reflecting this broadened academic vision, the college changed its name in 1922 to Georgia State College for Women (GSCW). In 1932, the college became part of the newly formed University System of Georgia under the governance of a constitutional Board of Regents. This shift provided greater resources, oversight, and opportunities for expanded growth. By 1958, the institution had launched its first graduate program, the Master of Education, and conferred its first graduate degree in 1959.

A more comprehensive academic identity took shape in 1961 with another name change to The

Woman’s College of Georgia (WCG). In the years that followed, the college took additional steps toward becoming more inclusive. In 1964, Cellestine Hill became the first full-time Black student to enroll at WCG. Three years later, the college admitted men for the first time as full-time students. Reflecting this transformation, the institution adopted the name Georgia College at Milledgeville, later shortened to Georgia College.

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, academic offerings continued to grow. New programs in business administration, public administration, home economics, history, psychology, biology, and nursing reinforced the institution’s status as a robust center for undergraduate and graduate education.

In 1996, Georgia College was granted a new statewide mission by the Board of Regents to serve as Georgia’s designated public liberal arts university. With this distinction came its current name: Georgia College & State University. The mission emphasized high-quality and affordable education for Georgia’s best and brightest students. That same year, GCSU was invited to join the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges (COPLAC), affirming its growing national reputation.

Today, GCSU is one of the three most selective institutions in the University System of Georgia and serves more than 7,000 students—98% of whom are Georgia residents. The university offers 34 undergraduate majors and 31 graduate degree programs and, in Fall of 2025, was named the #5 best public university in the 12-state Regional South by U.S. News & World Report. GCSU has also been repeatedly named a College of Distinction, and its student-athletes lead the nation with the highest academic success rate among all NCAA Division II public schools.

The university’s nationally acclaimed GC Journeys program further enriches student learning by connecting classroom knowledge to real-world experience. Through

study abroad, internships, leadership opportunities, mentored research, and community-based engagement, students actively participate in their learning experiences at GCSU, developing the skills and insight necessary to thrive in an ever-changing world.

Though its name and programs have evolved over time, Georgia College & State University has remained steadfast in its purpose: to educate, to inspire, and to prepare students for meaningful lives and careers grounded in knowledge, inquiry, leadership, and service. As a university that values reason, respect, and responsibility, GCSU continues to honor its past while boldly shaping the future.

ACADEMIC TRADITIONS

ACADEMIC REGALIA

Patterned from medieval university customs, today’s academic regalia reflect the status, scholastic achievements, and study disciplines of its wearer. In the United States, the first uniform code for academic regalia was established in 1895. This set of rules governed the appearance of the three basic parts of the academic costume – cap, gown, and hood. This code is still in effect today.

The cap is generally the mortarboard or Oxford style, but a soft cap similar to a beret can be worn. The tassel may be any one of three different colors: black, gold, or the color representative of its wearer's major field of learning in which their degree was earned. The tassel may be worn on either side of the cap.

The gowns are black, may vary in materials and fullness, and are of three basic types. The bachelor’s gown is of relatively simple design but with a fairly elaborate yoke and long, pointed sleeves. The master’s gown is similar to that of the bachelor’s except for the sleeves that open at the wrist. The master’s gown also contains an extra square-ended swatch of cloth that hangs from the sleeve. The doctoral gown is more elaborate than the former two gowns, since this gown is adorned with velvet panels down the front and around the neck. The doctoral gown also has three velvet bars running across each sleeve. University presidents’ gowns are similar to the doctoral gown and have four velvet bars running across each sleeve. These bars, along with the paneling, may be different in color to indicate the major field of learning from which the degree was awarded. The gown itself may also be of various ornamental colors.

THE MEDALLION

The Presidential medallion was created especially for the investiture of Cathy Cox, the twelfth president of the university. The medallion is made of bronze and displays the official seal of Georgia College & State University. The seal features the symbols of a liberal arts education, including the beaker, the laurel leaf, an open book, and oil lamp. The Great Seal of the State of Georgia is emblazoned in the center of the medallion. The outer edge of the seal displays a band of green enamel and includes the names Georgia College & State University and the University System of Georgia. The medallion is worn on the chain of office, also fashioned from bronze, and bears the names and years of service for each of the university’s presidents.

THE HOOD

The hood is the most colorful and symbolic element of the academic attire. The higher the degree, the longer the length of the hood. Within the maze of colors on the hood, one must be able to distinguish the level of degree, the major field of learning in which the degree was awarded, and the institution from which the degree was conferred.

The width of the all-encompassing velvet edging denotes the level of the degree. The color of the velvet edging on the hood represents the wearer’s discipline, while the color of the inside lining represents the wearer’s alma mater.

For all academic purposes, including trimmings of doctoral gowns, edging of hoods and tassels of caps, the colors associated with the different disciplines are as follows:

THE MACE

With origins in the Middle Ages, the mace is an ornamental staff that symbolizes the authority of the university president. Georgia College & State University first used the mace at the inauguration of President Edwin Speir in the spring of 1982. The current mace features the university seal cast in bronze.

The mace bearer carries the mace before the president as the academic procession enters and retires from academic convocations. The mace bearer has the symbolic duty of protecting the university, its people, and its processes. Each college selects a member of its faculty to carry the mace at the commencement ceremony. The mace bearer is typically the recipient of a college teaching award or a senior faculty member in the college.

ACADEMIC STOLE

Georgia College & State University undergraduates participating in the ceremony are distinguished by the pendant stoles they are wearing with their gowns.

ACADEMIC HONORS

Georgia College & State University honors undergraduates who have high academic achievement with the designations of cum laude, magna cum laude, and summa cum laude. To obtain these designations, students must obtain the following institutional, Regents’ cumulative, and overall grade point averages:

∫ Cum laude 3.60 to 3.74

‡ Magna cum laude 3.75 to 3.89

§ Summa cum laude 3.90 to 4.00

Students who are expected to earn these honors are wearing blue pendant stoles and are recognized in the commencement program with the symbols listed above. Class valedictorians are also awarded a white satin stole. Final honors designations will be determined and posted on the student’s diploma and transcript following the receipt of final grades.

HONORS COLLEGE GRADUATES

Each year, a limited number of entering undergraduate students are admitted into the John E. Sallstrom Honors College through a selection process based on their high school academic record and extracurricular involvement. Transfer students may also be admitted to the Honors College based on exceptional academic achievement at a previous institution.

Students must maintain a 3.30 GPA at the university and complete 18 semester hours of honors course credit to be recognized as an Honors College graduate. Honors College graduates wear a blue and green honor cord and a medallion, and they are recognized in the program by the ∆ symbol.

PHI KAPPA PHI

Phi Kappa Phi is the nation’s oldest and most selective multidisciplinary collegiate honor society. The Georgia College & State University Chapter of The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi was chartered on May 23, 1973. Selection for membership is on the basis of scholarship. Members are elected from graduate students, undergraduate students, faculty, administration, and alumni. To be eligible for consideration for membership, graduate and professional students must rank in the top 10 percent of all graduate and professional students in their college. Undergraduate students from the senior class must rank scholastically in the top 10 percent of seniors in their college; undergraduate students from the junior class must rank scholastically in the top 7.5 percent of juniors in their college. Graduates and faculty members of Phi Kappa Phi wear a medallion that bears the badge of the society hanging on a blue ribbon and are recognized in the program by the ◊ symbol.

CORDS, STOLES, AND MEDALLIONS

As the state’s public liberal arts university, Georgia College & State University encourages learning through transformative experiences both inside and outside the classroom, in the local community and abroad. Many bachelor’s degree recipients will wear cords, stoles, or medallions with their academic regalia to indicate their participation in such experiences. These decorations honor students with superior academic achievement, signify affiliation with a particular academic discipline, recognize involvement and leadership in campus organizations, distinguish significant levels of community service, and celebrate inclusion and diversity. Unlike the graduate hood, more than one cord, stole, or medallion may be worn as part of the bachelor’s regalia.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESDIENT OF THE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION

Dear Graduates:

On behalf of the more than 60,000 Georgia College & State University alumni throughout Georgia and the nation, I extend my heartfelt congratulations and welcome you to our esteemed ranks. When you graduate, you automatically join the GCSU Alumni Association, and we are proud to commemorate your achievements. While this commencement ceremony signifies the conclusion of a significant chapter, it also heralds the beginning of an exciting journey with virtually limitless possibilities. As you embark on your professional and community endeavors, I encourage you to remain connected to your alma mater, ensuring that your legacy becomes intertwined with the rich history of this university.

STAY INFORMED: Effective relationships thrive on regular and consistent communication. Stay updated on events and activities by following the GCSU Alumni Association on social media. Additionally, look out for the Pergola Post email newsletter and the alumni magazine, Connection. Ensure your contact information is up to date at gcsu.edu/alumni, so you never miss any important stories, features, or announcements. Furthermore, Georgia College & State University values recognizing your successes and accomplishments. Share your career advancements, community contributions, personal milestones such as weddings, anniversaries, or new family additions by emailing alumni@gcsu.edu.

GET ENGAGED: The Alumni Association hosts various events throughout the year, both on campus and around the country. We invite you to participate in these opportunities to connect with fellow alumni. There are numerous ways to stay involved on campus, including student mentoring, guest lecturing, panel discussions, or serving on advisory boards. Off campus, you can attend fun family nights, mixers, and more. For more information on these exciting opportunities, see the Event Calendar at gcsu.edu/alumni.

GIVE BACK: The GCSU Foundation is committed to raising philanthropic donations to support the university, our students and GCSU’s mission to provide an expansive educational experience and prepare influential leaders for the future. Please consider contributing to the Foundations of Excellence Fund, which provides essential resources for special projects that enhance the student experience. We encourage you to show your appreciation and support for this remarkable university by donating $26.00, symbolizing your graduation year. Every contribution helps create a significant impact for GCSU students. Donations can be made online at give.gcsu.edu. Congratulations on your outstanding achievement, and best wishes for your future endeavors.

Sincerely,

Georgia College & State University Alumni Association
